THANK YOU FOR GIVING | greenville.edu
THANKFUL FOR A YEAR OF INSPIRED LEARNING . . . AND FOR YOU With a heart full of gratitude for the Lord’s provision and for you, our faithful Financial Champions, I’ve entered the final stretch of leading GC’s transition to Greenville University. The date of GC’s official name change—June 1, 2017—approximates the halfway mark on a five-year journey that began in 2014 when trustees approved the strategic plan that has since guided our work. As a Financial Champion, you have helped turn that blueprint into reality. Your vision for Christcentered learning has empowered and encouraged our professors and students; your generosity has instilled confidence. This, our last annual report as Greenville College, radiates your influence in keeping Christ at the center of science, sports, digital arts, ministry, community building, service to others and more. When you read how our women’s basketball team contributed to a historic year for the College, keep in mind that the financial relief you provided to eight of those players last year helped fuel their performance. When you read about a recent graduate expanding GC’s influence by duplicating the College’s MOSAIC Diversity Group at a nearby high school, keep in mind that the scholarships you helped to fund enabled him to embrace and extend GC’s heritage by telling others about GC. When you read about our new engineering program, or our acquisition of lab instruments valued at $300,000, or the gracious gift we received to promote studies in Christian unity, or the boost donors gave to pastoral preparation by initiating the Donald N. Bastian Chair of Pastoral Theology and Christian Ministry, keep in mind that these developments all flowed from the generosity of our Financial Champions. Thank you for empowering our students with Christ-centered learning. Thank you for giving.

A YEAR OF FIRSTS
DREAMING, DESIGNING, DEVELOPING, DELIVERING Engineering Comes to Campus
The Lady Panthers opened the basketball season with a road win at Spalding that contributed to a landmark year. Here’s a snapshot of historic Panther moments from 2015-16: • First time in GC’s history that three teams qualified for NCAA tournaments in the same academic year. Congratulations go out to Lady Panthers in volleyball, basketball and softball. • First regular season conference championship in men’s tennis. • First time in 20 years GC men’s basketball claimed a regular season conference title. The Panthers unveiled a new strategy and led the NCAA Division III in scoring, averaging 113 points per game. • GC finished with an overall record of 16-11 in its first year of men’s volleyball. The Panthers ranked highest among all “first year” teams in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League.
• McPherson funded installation of the engineering lab and its furnishings; • Reeves, adjunct professor of electronics, anchored the program with his expertise; • Siefken, professor emeritus of physics and engineering, supplied wise counsel and unconditional support; and • Estevez, GC’s provost and COO, together with President Ivan Filby, saw beyond skepticism and scarce resources to fully back the initiative.
• New golf coach Dany Baker laid the groundwork for GC’s first ever women’s golf team and revival of the men’s golf team. Competition begins this spring.
Program director Professor Hyung Choi includes Assistant Professor of Engineering and Physics Dongxue Zhao to the list of indispensible collaborators and thanks them all. Launched last fall, the program serves 26 students.
• The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honored GC Athletic Director Doug Faulkner ’86 with the 2016 Lee McKinney Distinguished Service Award.
Choi firmly believes engineering agrees with GC’s mission and vision. The creative hands-on nature of the work has spiritual value that echoes God’s creativity. “God dreamed, He designed, He developed and He delivered,” explains Choi. “God is not a theoretician; He worked hard with His hands in creating this world.”
GC Vision: We focus on the development of the whole person

Choi has observed that biblical history unfolds in Genesis against the backdrop of nature in the Garden of Eden and ends in Revelation with the constructed City of God. As God’s children, he says, we are called to steward our environment, but also to develop, create and co-create with our Maker.
MAR THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME
GC RECOGNIZED AS TOP IN STATE FOR ONLINE PROGRAMS Accredited Schools Online named Greenville College number one in Illinois for delivering online programs. Criteria included number of programs offered, services in place for online students and the availability of financial aid. For graduate student Mark Owens, however, the integration of faith he experienced in his classes topped all other benefits. “I have grown both professionally and personally from what I have learned about business and faith,” said Owens. “I am encouraged because there are so many others in the program that are impacted by this faith-based education.” Owens is on track to receive his MBA in May 2017 for a program completed entirely online. Mark’s degree will be among the last to bear the name Greenville College. GC will assume identity as Greenville University on June 1.
Early in March, President Ivan Filby shared in chapel that learning encompasses more than acquiring a degree and a job; it also invites the “imprint of the Holy Spirit on our lives so that we can go out and shape the world, bending it back into the image of Christ.” Days later, renowned theologian Justo L. González delivered the chapel message. Provost Edwin Estevez ’94 introduced González by describing his profound influence as a world-shaper. “Dr. González is to Christian theological scholarship as oxygen is to the brain and protein is to our bones,” said Estevez. Listening that day were members of GC’s MOSAIC Diversity Group, students engaged in increasing the awareness and celebration of diversity. In just two months, MOSAIC’s president, Paris Grimmett ’16, would graduate with a degree in criminal justice and take these lessons of worldshaping with him. By year’s end, he initiated a MOSAIC chapter in a nearby high school. GC’s MOSAIC Diversity Scholarship, a renewable $15,000 award, recognizes the integration of faith, learning and service. In 2015, 15 MOSAIC scholars enriched GC’s college community. In 2016, the number rose to 21. As the program grows, so will the reach of the world-shapers it produces.
LIVE AND LEARN Each year, students engage in learning and service outside of the classroom. In 2016 students served in the Dominican Republic, Panama, Mexico, Spain, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti and Malawi. “These students have seen God’s hand leading them,” says Faith Marie Nava, director of World Outreach and Missions. For a list of donors to World Outreach and Missions visit greenville.edu/alumni.

JUN GOING FOR THE ASSIST ALL SUMMER LONG For members of GC’s worship team Pursuit, the start of summer camp season signaled a time to roll up their sleeves and help camp directors deliver winning summer programs. The musicians willingly help wherever help is needed, but they are particularly effective at drawing others into authentic worship.
The collaboration reflects the shared goal of the Free Methodist denomination and Greenville College to serve globally in Christ’s name. “This is a distinctively Free Methodist worship team,” explains Pursuit’s tour manager Marc Anderson, “an international worship team.”
This summer, Pursuit will lead worship at FMYC 2017, a youth conference sponsored by the Free Methodist Church, June 2630 in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The worship promises to reprise last summer’s lively collaboration at a youth conference in Chile between worship teams from the Greenville Free Methodist Church and Iglesia Centro Familiar de Adoración, a church in Lota, Chile.
Pursuit hopes to equip attendees to lead lives of worship. “This isn’t about music, although that’s our platform,” says Anderson. “Our goal is to develop relationships that allow people to connect to the Lord more easily.” For information about scheduling Pursuit for an event, contact Marc Anderson at 618-664-6507 or marc.anderson@greenville.edu. Worship leader Nathan Kriebel ‘16 received donor-funded scholarships throughout his studies at GC. Thank you for giving.
NEW NAME, SAME GAME A beautiful June day marked the Greenville College Athletic Department’s 22nd annual golf scramble and its debut under a new name: the Jack D. Trager Memorial Panther Pride Golf Scramble. The fundraiser netted over $18,000 for GC athletics and honored the beloved coach and athletic director at the same time. More than 350 students enrolled at Greenville College this year participate in athletics. The athletic budget is tied to tuition dollars. In recent years, coaches have had to find alternative funding for their programs. On behalf of the student athletes and coaches who benefit from the scramble, thank you sponsors, donors and golfers.

JUL BE OUR GUEST
Personal Connection Drives Enrollment The end of July marked the conclusion of a recruiting season fraught with unprecedented challenges for Dean of Admissions Karl Hatton and deans just like him throughout Illinois.
On “preview” days that the College dedicates to hosting high school students and their families, President Ivan Filby and Provost Edwin Estevez make it a priority to engage with the campus guests.
The prospect of state financial aid for college-bound high school students faded as state legislators wrangled over budget issues. Increasingly, students from Illinois high schools—GC’s primary source for incoming freshmen—chose out-of-state colleges and universities.
The students have lunch with professors who share their academic interests, while their parents eat with the parents of current students. This conversational format invites a level of personal engagement that presentations and programs rarely achieve.
Now, well into a new recruiting season and equipped with a solid plan for moving forward, Hatton feels encouraged. He credits his hardworking team for generating
a significant increase in the number of applications compared to last year. “We are connecting with high school students who want to be at Greenville College,” he says. Hatton also credits doing what GC has always done best: connecting with prospective students on a personal level.
“We inadvertently hit a homerun when we were just trying to bunt,” says Hatton.
“LOOK AFTER THE ORPHANS AND WIDOWS . . .” Ministry to God’s Littlest Angels
Malnourished, abandoned and orphaned—the smallest and neediest persons cannot even ask for help. Senior Janika Grimlund’s internship with God’s Littlest Angels in Petionville, Haiti, gave her experience administering compassionate care to little ones and also spending time with adoptive families. Janika was one of 15 students to serve in ministry internships last summer. The interns’ work included ministries to children and youth, college students, the elderly, church congregations and campers.
GC Vision: We welcome the presence of the risen Christ to fill us, equip us and send us.

AUG EQUIPPED TO SAY “I CAN”
Introducing GC’s Center for Visual Culture and Media Studies
FUTURE TEACHERS TO BENEFIT FROM CERTIFICATION
Does your project call for a press release? Emma Canady ’17 can do that. How about a script or social media hook? She can do that too. Does your website or marketing effort need a boost? Emma’s your girl. Last summer, Emma put these skills to work while freelancing for the charity foundation Happenstance in Irvine, California. Thanks to her studies in communication at GC, she arrived on the scene prepared and confident. Emma will graduate this spring, a beneficiary of GC’s new Center for Visual Culture and Media Studies (CVCMS). Launched last August, the CVCMS is an interdisciplinary study space that fosters collaboration between four departments—English, communication, digital media and art. It prepares students for the demands of communication in a world where visual concepts carry as much weight as written ideas and where effectiveness often depends on digital expertise and computer programming. The CVCMS reaches across department aisles to equip students with broad competencies for work in the spaces between disciplines. In fall 2017, students like Emma will hone these skills in the Kaufmann Building on campus, home to the CVCMS. They will work in a computer lab and in studios for creating podcasts, video games and digital media productions. The Center’s director, Associate Professor Jake Amundson ’01, acknowledges that change and fresh perspectives form an integral part of the Center’s mission. “We hope the CVCMS opens up career opportunities in areas that we’re just now becoming aware of,” he says—opportunities that will allow students like Emma to respond with a confident, “I can.” Pictured, Emma Canady received financial relief from GC Financial Champions who stepped in when state legislators failed to deliver promised funds. Thank you for giving.

In August, Greenville College announced that its teacher education program will now include certification in character education through Character Plus, a national organization that works to develop positive character traits in youth. Thanks to a generous donor, the School of Education has integrated the 25-hour training into its existing program. Other recent developments that benefit future teachers include: GC in Springfield – Students living in and near Springfield, Illinois, can now complete GC’s teacher education program by attending classes close to home at Lincoln Land Community College. Lincoln Land is the fifth institution to partner with GC in preparing teachers. GC in Chicago – Students can now complete their required semester of student teaching in Chicago public schools. This expanded urban option addresses the passion many GC students hold for social justice and service. Expanded study options off campus – College graduates with a bachelor of science can now complete a master’s program and work toward an elementary teacher’s license at one of GC’s partner campuses. This redesign of GC’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program meets new state requirements. GC represented on state panel – On December 7, the Illinois State Board of Education announced that Mark Lamb, dean of GC’s School of Education, would serve on a state panel charged with implementing a new data collection program for use in accrediting teacher preparation programs.

COLLEGE TO EXPAND STUDIES IN CHRISTIAN UNITY Third Largest Gift in GC History Funds Expansion In September, Greenville College announced its receipt of generous funding from the Full Salvation Union to promote studies of Christian unity. The College will use a portion of the gift, $1.3 million, to establish and provide support for The James F. and Leona N. Andrews Endowed Chair for Christian Unity (John 17:21); it will use the balance of the gift, $61,750, to begin immediate programming. In November, the college community welcomed members of the Andrews family to campus to celebrate the collaboration. Jerry Hood ’82, chairman of GC’s Board of Trustees, thanked the family “for providing the resources to ensure there will always be a voice on this campus for those who want to find unity through Christ.”
“This allows us to deepen and expand what we’re trying to do here already,” said Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Theology Ben Wayman ’02, Andrews Fellow for the 2016-17 school year. “Often we’re trying to make bricks without straw; and this gives us the straw.” Wayman announced that plans were underway for the First Annual Andrews Lecture in Christian Unity to take place February 15, 2017, on campus. New Testament scholar and professor Michael J. Gorman will speak.
The prayer walk across campus at the start of fall semester 2016 engaged students, faculty, emeriti faculty, staff and members of the community. THE RECORD | 2016 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

OCT INTRODUCING THE BASTIAN SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY, PHILOSOPHY, AND MINISTRY A dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony early in October formally marked the transition of GC’s Department of Philosophy and Theology into the Donald N. and Kathleen G. Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry. With the launch of the School came the launch of fundraising efforts to endow the newly created Donald N. Bastian Chair of Pastoral Theology and Christian Ministry. Bastian ’53 is bishop emeritus of the Free Methodist Church of North America as well as the Free Methodist Church in Canada President Ivan Filby called the school and chair exciting and important developments for the college. “One of our key strategic goals is to build on our strong foundation with both the Free Methodist denomination and the Christian church at large,” he said. “The Bastian school and chair will certainly help us to do this.”
DUANE E. HOOD HALL DEDICATED On October 22, Greenville College renamed and dedicated the former West Oak residence hall as Duane E. Hood Hall. The naming came as a complete surprise to honoree Duane Hood ’56. Duane served on the College’s Board of Trustees for 13 years. His experience and knowledge in both education and business proved valuable to the Board, and his likable nature and enthusiasm invited collaboration. In tribute, colleagues recalled Duane’s positivity, generous spirit, faith, humor and wisdom. Duane’s three children and one grandson also attended Greenville College.

DEC FEDERAL AGENCY DONATES LAB INSTRUMENTS TO GC SCIENCES The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Chicago lab has donated scientific instruments valued at $300,000 to Greenville College for use in its science labs. The four instruments are top-ofthe-line and fully functional according to Professor of Chemistry Darrell Iler ’77, director of STEM programs at GC.
experience possible, Iler said that keeping the department’s suite of instruments up to date is always challenging. “We are very well equipped for a small school, but in the last two or three years we’ve been more concerned because of aging equipment,” he explained. “This donation helps considerably.”
GC’s chemistry program prioritizes extensive hands-on experience with advanced instrumentation for all students, beginning in freshman year courses. Though small class sizes make this
The instruments include two chromatographs and two spectrometers. This spring, Iler will teach a course in instrumental analysis where students have the opportunity to use all four.
STUDENTS EXCEED EXPECTATIONS PUTTING EXPERIENCE FIRST Students went above and beyond when they wrapped up their work last semester for the inaugural session of Experience First. The semesterlong learning experience paired students with businesses to tackle “high-stakes” challenges in the marketplace. Students presented their work to the college community December 6. Suzanne (Allison ’00) Davis, dean of the Briner School of Business, called it “the best day of my professional career.” Here is a summary of the projects that engaged about 20 students: Invent something – Innovative International, LLC challenged students to find a new use for the “pop up” technology of collapsible laundry hampers. Students collected more than 250 ideas before settling on a device that corrals electrical cords. Innovative International’s engineers developed specs and a prototype. Representatives will pitch the product to Walmart this April. Increase sales – Rural King, America’s Farm and Home Store, asked students to identify ways to increase the sales of its inhouse brand of dog food. Students visited Rural King stores, scrutinized its website and consulted a lab that analyzed the product’s ingredients. Rural King immediately implemented two of the students’ recommendations and plans to implement the others. Educate consumers – Enertech Global, LLC asked students to find a way to educate young homeowners about geothermal heating and cooling systems. Students designed an infographic for various uses in social media and on the Enertech website. Entertech will use the info-graphic as planned and also consider an animated version of the design for the future. 12

Create a marketing video – Simply Amish asked students to create videos that the furniture manufacturer would use to train its sales associates and educate consumers. Students conducted preliminary research and established a story line that relates Amish culture and craftsmanship to topquality home furnishings appropriate for a mainstream market. Next semester, a second Experience First group will move forward on producing the videos.
Increase retail traffic – Eckert’s Family Farms, the nation’s largest family-operated you-pick orchard, charged students with drawing consumers to its country store and restaurant during the slower winter months. The students’ thorough research informed Eckert’s decision to install an ice skating rink in close proximity to its store and restaurant. Skating on the synthetic ice commenced in January 2017.
2016: A BANNER YEAR FOR YOU, OUR FINANCIAL CHAMPIONS
Pictured (left to right), alumnus Don Jones ’52, President Ivan Filby and Vice President for Development Linda (Groesbeck ’73) Myette share a few words at the dedication of the newly acquired building that houses GC’s fundraising team. Jones presented the property to the College in honor of his wife, alumna Esther (Knapp ‘54) Jones. Each year, GC’s fundraising team connects Greenville College to thousands of alumni and donor friends worldwide.
A year in review would be incomplete without celebrating the expressed generosity of you, our Financial Champions. In Fiscal Year 2016, you empowered and inspired our college community over and over again. When you learned that the State of Illinois had withheld promised funding from about one-third of our students, you rallied! To date, you have delivered more than $70,000 in financial relief to students. But that’s not all. For the first time in 13 years, you pushed GC over the $1M mark in annual gifts to the Fund for Educational Excellence. You instilled confidence in students and professors. You inspired others to give as well. It gets even better. The funds you delivered overall totaled nearly $2.4M. While these include estate gifts and gifts from corporations and foundations, most come from individual donors in hand-stamped envelopes, often with handwritten notes like this one: “Every day I thank God for Greenville College. I was a marginal student, but the gift of time from my professors and administrators helped more than I can express. My degree opened doors to interesting jobs. I have been blessed, and Greenville College was the portal.” I, on behalf of our entire college community, applaud you, Greenville College Financial Champions!
