Greenville College empowers students for lives of character and service through a transforming Christ-centered education in the liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies.
ENLARGING OUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE Championship generosity powers our plan When people ask me what Greenville College is doing as an institution, my response is always the same. I tell them we are implementing our strategic plan to extend our heritage and expand our reach. For more than a year, we have looked to this Board-approved “roadmap” for direction. If you recall the days of paper roadmaps, imagine one that is worn from use, soft from folding and refolding and sun-faded from its ready place on the dashboard. That’s what our strategic plan looks like as we press well into this second year of our journey toward university status. We have carried it with us into conversations about our academic priorities and pored over it before identifying pursuits that fit our capabilities and resources. We have referred to it collectively in conference rooms and privately in our own creative spaces – devising programs, planning budgets, forging partnerships, and searching for talent. Maps are the means to an end, and our strategic plan is no different. By it,
we pursue our mission of empowering students for lives of character and service through a transformative Christ-centered education. By it, we keep our eyes fixed on our influence as Christ-followers in a world that needs Christ. By it, we lay a foundation to expand our reach and draw more students into GC’s fold: • students like our Mosaic Diversity Scholars, whose different cultural perspectives enrich our own; • students moved to carry their faith into professions like nursing, engineering and agribusiness; • students who value the prospect of integrating study with service for a semester in Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic; and • students from places like China and Japan who make Holtwick International Hall their “home away from home.” Lately when I tell about GC’s work, I also share the good news that we will soon be debt free – a distinction few colleges or universities can claim. This remarkable accomplishment will likely take place
before we celebrate our new identity as Greenville University in September 2017. Giving to GC is all about changing lives, and this report celebrates our generous donors. They power our work and give our plan “feet.” They power our students’ work and give them confidence. These financial champions and life-changers also benefit from our strategic plan. As one of our staff recently observed, “A dollar given to Greenville College goes further than a dollar given any place else.” We prayed over the creation of our strategic plan and continue to seek God’s favor over the expanded reach it inspires. Thank you for engaging with us on this journey. Thank you, as ever, for giving. Blessings,
Dr. Ivan Filby President

HANDS-ON LEARNING SHINES AT BRINER SCHOOL LAUNCH l to r: Michaela Henrichs, Grace Backhaus
Real life projects with significant consequences put students on a learning fast track. “They rise to the occasion,” says Suzanne Davis, dean of the Briner School of Business (BSB). Students rose to the occasion in a big way last November with the School’s official launch. They managed every detail, from distributing parking passes and compiling welcome packets to escorting dignitaries and ensuring security. The two days of events included a ribboncutting ceremony (preparations, pictured above) and several seminars on faith in the workplace. Charged with logistics, Emily Kaiser ’17 immersed herself in securing rooms and vehicles, distributing schedules and ensuring that the right people were in the right places at the right times. Emily values the wealth of hands-on experiences she has realized at GC. “Executing strategies and actually practicing how to work with a business team in a professional manner allows us to truly grow.”

Some say Christian media isn’t relevant in today’s world. Kirsten Norsworthy ’17, content editor of The Vista, has reason to believe otherwise. The Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) named the student magazine a finalist for its 2015 Pacemaker Award, the preeminent award for college journalism. The accolade is one of a dozen honors from trade associations bestowed on The Vista since the yearbook assumed a magazine format several years ago. The Vista’s success flows from the marriage of three media forms – writing, photography and graphic design. “I think it’s really cool how people from different majors with different talents and skills come together to present one piece,” Kirsten says. GC will formalize interdisciplinary media practices this fall with the launch of its Center for Visual Culture and Media Studies. In this virtual learning space, students majoring in art, communication, English and/or digital media will learn basic competencies in all of the disciplines. The marriage of media prepares students for future jobs and keeps GC publications relevant at the same time. In Kirsten’s words, these publications allow the wider world “to glimpse the heart of Greenville College.”

ENLARGING OUR CIRCLE WITH DIVERSITY Mosaic Diversity Scholars
Life is full of new beginnings for Jalisa Casey, who started the year as part of GC’s new Mosaic Scholars program. The Mosaic Diversity Scholarship provides financial incentive to students who perform well academically, engage in their communities and whose racial or ethnic backgrounds bring Jalisa Casey diversity to GC. So far this year, Jalisa and 15 other Mosaic Diversity Scholars have attended national student diversity conferences, mentored school children in surrounding communities and stayed plugged in with GC’s student-led, chartered organization, the Mosaic Diversity Group. The opportunities have opened Jalisa’s eyes to diversity both locally and globally and bolstered her confidence. After induction of the Scholars into the program last November, President Ivan Filby observed, “With the nation’s changing demographic, this program is vital for the good of Greenville College. These students will help us to think differently.” GC hopes to double its number of Mosaic Scholars this fall.
Alumni and friends of GC advocate for the success of determined scholars like Jalisa with gifts to The Fund for Educational Excellence.

Young alumni are those who have graduated from GC in the last ten years.
(l to r) Liz Johnson and David Weyers. In the distance, the catwalk from Hogue Hall bridges the pond.
The Ayers Field Station, home to GC’s White Environmental Education Center, has entered an exciting new phase with the reconstruction of its pond. Previously, algae thrived off the high nutrients of the onetime hog farm. Alumni and friends of the College helped fund its reconstruction. Last September, students Liz Johnson, David Weyers and Charlie Herrick released bluegill, minnows, red ear sunfish and catfish into its waters. Next year, students will add predator bass to complete the ecosystem. The White Center will see new life as well with GC’s introduction of a degree program in environmental engineering. The track is one of three new engineering options available to students beginning fall 2016. Engineering physics and engineering management round out the trio of new offerings that each lead to a bachelor of science. “We’ve tried to identify areas of engineering that are high growth in terms of jobs, but under-represented in terms of available programs,” explains President Ivan Filby.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING
Combined, Liz, David and Charlie receive the GC Scholarship, McAllaster Honors Scholarship, Science Departmental Scholarship, Legacy Award, and President’s Scholarship.

Gianna Paden
Liberal arts or vocational training? Sophomore Gianna Paden is glad she doesn’t have to choose. Gianna wants the relational and critical thinking benefits of a communityoriented, residential campus, but also dreams of taking those skills into the nursing field. Through GC’s Nursing Partnerships Program, she will attend GC for most of her education and then enter a fast-track degree program at one of GC’s partner nursing schools. Already her experiences as resident chaplain to international students are preparing her for the relational challenges of nursing. “It’s helping me learn how to interact with different types of people who hold different worldviews,” she says. Such broad understanding will benefit Gianna as she pursues her dream of serving as a nurse overseas.
THANK YOU FOR GIVING
The Fund for Educational Excellence helps to power financial awards like the McAllaster Honors Scholarship that Gianna receives.

ACCREDITATION TO EXPAND REACH OF SOCIAL WORK GRADS Josie Muniania
When social work major Josie Muniania ’16 graduates in May, she will leave with a wealth of hands-on work experience and broad skills gleaned from her summer internship at a mental health facility in her home town. Josie revised treatment plans, assisted with an anger management group, helped plan a consumer advisory panel, participated in clinical supervision and more. Good news from GC’s Department of Social Work promises to expand opportunities for students like Josie. The department is currently pursuing accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Accreditation will enhance students’ internship experiences as undergraduates and accelerate their completion of master’s programs. It will also ease the process they eventually follow to secure licensure. If the rigorous accreditation process continues to go well, the program may secure CSWE accreditation in fall 2017. Students currently enrolled, however, will benefit from the process as early as this spring.
Gifts from alumni and friends of the College add to Josie’s confidence. She receives the Schlosser Memorial Scholarship and the GC Scholarship, Recognition and Legacy Awards

Research equipment doesn’t come cheap. Consider the powerful multiphoton microscope developed for biological and medical research. A $500K price tag puts it out of reach for many colleges that aspire to equip student researchers with state-ofthe-art instruments. Physics Department Chair Hyung Choi, however, knows that not all research frontiers require deep pockets. He and colleague Dongxue Zhao, assistant professor of engineering and physics, plan to build an affordable version of the pricey microscope. It is not the first doit-yourself project for Choi. He and a team of students have already put together GC’s quantum information lab from the ground up. They built interfaces, salvaged parts from old equipment and chose simple electronic components over more expensive parts. “One can build ‘no-frills’ equipment without sacrificing scientific quality,” explains Choi. Students engaged in the project learned the science behind the equipment. Among them was Shuto Osawa ’16, who later secured an internship with Dr. Anton Zeilinger’s group at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. Zeilinger is known for pioneering work with quantum teleportation. Upon Shuto’s return to Greenville, he lent his expertise to improving GC’s quantum information lab.

GREAT JOBS, GREAT PROJECT Malvin Hubbard (at right)
Kami Suess ’17 and Aaron Phillips ’17 may not have sported superhero masks and capes when they visited Los Angeles last fall, but “dynamic” still describes the duo’s work as part of Greenville College’s Great Jobs Projects. Great Jobs is a collection of student-produced videos that capture personal stories and insights about the pursuit of meaningful work. Bob Fry of Transformation.org Promoting Good Work™ invited students from GC’s Briner School of Business to conduct half a dozen interviews with successful professionals in the L.A. area. Students like Suess and Phillips have since conducted dozens more. Edited down to three minutes, the videos offer tidbits of wisdom and memorable stories – perfect portions for busy college students about to embark on careers. Interviewer Malvin Hubbard ’16 sums up the exchange like this: “We basically say, ‘You once were me. What did you do to get to where you are today?’” From there, the stories flow.
Combined, Kami, Aaron and Malvin receive the Dean’s Scholarship, President’s Scholarship, Recognition Merit Award and the Walters and Cooley Endowed Scholarships. As part of the Great Jobs team, they thank GC’s greater community of alumni and friends for empowering their work through giving.

AGRIBUSINESS ADVISORY COUNCIL AGRIBUSINESS A “GOOD FIT” EXPANSION FOR GC Alexa Campbell
It’s good that Alexa Campbell ’15 thinks “doing” is the best teacher. Lately, when she checks off one item on her “to do” list, a new one takes its place. Most recently, the industrious graduate assistant for the Briner School of Business learned volumes from helping to develop the curriculum for GC’s new bachelor of science program in agribusiness. A fan of hands-on learning, Alexa sees great potential for students pursuing agribusiness at GC. The College’s close proximity to a host of global agribusinesses including Monsanto, Purina Mills, Bunge North America, Archer Daniels Midland and Rabo AgriFinance means a wealth of nearby internship opportunities for students. Initial conversations with area agribusiness leaders confirmed the value of GC’s emphasis on handson learning and character development. “Even Jesus didn’t just tell the twelve disciples stories about how to be good Christians and how to spread the word,” Alexa reflects. “He showed them and let them practice it before he left them.” On a personal note, Alexa sees her experience growing up on a farm as an asset. “It helps me to understand who I am talking to about the major and what it can do for students.” As an undergraduate, Alexa received GC’s Legacy Award, the GC Scholarship, Transfer Merit Scholarship, Marching Band Scholarship and the Cooley Endowed Scholarship. Today, as one of GC’s financial champions, she too empowers the College’s work.
