A Message from the Director
Parks provide a place for active recreation, allowing local residents the chance to play activities like basketball, softball or tennis in neighborhoods where backyards and schoolyards are not readily available. Young parents rely on our parks, Community Center and the Fieldhouse to give their children a safe place to play and socialize. Many Greenwood residents have looked to Freedom Springs to find refreshing escape and learn the important life skill of swimming. Dog owners have found designated dog parks an important place to give their dogs freedom and to create a community of their own.
Recently parks departments throughout the nation have been in the spotlight due to high demand for outdoor and leisure activities. This increased consumer behavior has highlighted the impact of recreational amenities and programs for a community. A well-funded parks and recreation service can advance community health and well-being, better prepare communities for the impacts of a changing social climate and help ensure equitable access to the wide-ranging benefits of recreation.
Greenwood Parks and Recreation provides opportunities to take private extension to the municipal level, working together to support each other’s efforts to serve the needs of city residents. A partnership demonstrates that we can build, renovate, maintain, and program parks more effectively versus acting alone. Partnerships allow fees to stay low, therefore, not exacerbating social inequity.

Greenwood Community Center
Having undergone a multi-million dollar renovation in 2016, the Greenwood Community Center has been completely re-imagined. Highlights of the facility include: Expanded and modern adult workout area featuring the latest cardio and weightlifting equipment, as well as spacious environments for adult fitness classes; a two-story space devoted entirely to children of all ages, offering STEAM-focused play features that are fun, creative and challenging, and including a unique Luckey Climber - a three-dimensional climbing structure designed for kids, and only one of four in the State; meeting and gathering spaces which are available for rent; and a gymnasium featuring two full-length basketball courts with nine regulation-size goals, and four lined pickleball courts.

Greenwood Sports Park
The Greenwood Sports Park will be a state-of-the-art baseball/softball facility inclusive of eight fully-lit diamonds, all with artificial turf infields and natural grass outfields. The park will also feature an inclusive playground, the city’s second splash pad, a multi-use playing field with cricket pitch, and a multi-use trail system throughout. Greenwood Parks & Recreation will be able to grow and enhance youth and adult programs extensively as a result of the new fields, and local and regional tournament directors will be able to host weekend events at the park. The economic impact of these programs and events will be a valuable opportunity for Greenwood businesses as they will bring thousands of visitors to the park each year.

Greenwood Fieldhouse
These Sponsorships run through the Greenwood Parks Foundation
The Greenwood Fieldhouse is a multi-sports facility inclusive of turf fields, hardwood courts, elevated walking track, golf simulators and more. The facility is for citizens of all ages and hosts various youth and adult programming and fitness classes as well as day pass usage. Its location, off of a main thoroughfare of the City of Greenwood, serves as the cornerstone of a future mixed use development. With state of the art offerings, high caliber athletes can use the facility. It also can host a large volume of foot traffic related to amenity users and spectators from both Greenwood residents and surrounding communities.

Pickleball in Greenwood
Pickleball is sweeping the nation, and Greenwood Parks & Recreation is thrilled to host multiple events celebrating this exciting sport! Our courts, both indoor and outdoor, are filled year-round with players, and our two-day tournaments feature competitive men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles matches, drawing over 250 participants each time. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, we also host a special night annually at the Craig Park pickleball complex, where pickleball enthusiasts can enjoy recreational matches alongside a pint from Oaken Barrel Brewing Company under the stars.

Halloween Monster Mash & Halloween Parade
Every Halloween, Greenwood trick-or-treaters wear their costumes for a spooktacular celebration. Monster Mash highlights include trick-or-treating, bounce houses, music, food, and much more. Then the Halloween Parade is a community fall favorite! All parade units are required to be decorated in a Halloween or Fall theme, have entertainment value, and are encouraged to include music. Parade participants are also encouraged to dress in costume and distribute items or candy to the crowd along the parade route.

Every year, we transform part of one of our parks into a temporary mud pit. We till up the land, then the Greenwood Fire Department comes and adds the water, to create the perfect atmosphere for kids to play in the mud! This event draws approximately 1,000 people annually for a messy afternoon, followed by clean up provided by the Greenwood Fire Department fire hoses.

Did you know we have a Parks Foundation? Art on the Trail
Public art plays an important role in Greenwood. Since 2004 we have hosted various artists’ sculptures from all over the country. These sculptures are acquired on two-year loans through a juried art panel, and artists are paid a stipend to install their pieces on the popular multi-use, Polk Hill Trail.
