EDITOR S L E T T E R

Our magazineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer edition was inspired by medieval imagery and fashion, with Joan of Arc as the main inspirational muse. Another theme we felt particularly drawn to while creating this issue was the use of bandage wrapped around the head, in a similar fashion to the medieval barbette and headband. The barbette and headband became a vital part of our editorial stories, and we attempted to recreate their visual impact using modern day materials. We focused on introducing important summer trends such as total white, transparencies, sportswear as well as a preview of the Fall/Winter 2015 trends. The design section features the transformative furniture from Arco, with focus on the Pivot desk, while the art section is dedicated to Episode 7: Another space, a contemporary art exhibition by eight Berlin artists, curated by the Insitu team.

For our male editorial, we wanted to reconstruct and experiment with the visual concept of the bandages wrapped around the head, however using unconventional materials. We chose colourful elastic bands which pressed against the skin and transformed the shape of the face, deforming it in an abstract way and creating a different effect. We focused on sportswear silhouettes, matching suits and patterns as our focal point for this seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer trends. Cyprus-born menswear designer Othonas Charalambous, utilises a traditional Cypriot hand-weaving technique called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fythkiotikaâ&#x20AC;? in his designs, with folk-inspired embroidery patterns made from natural fibres such as cotton and silk. Through his first full-scale collection, Othonas successfully attempts to bridge the gap between contemporary menswear and traditional Cypriot folk art, while paying homage to his roots and introducing this rich heritage to the rest of the world.

Our female editorial features armour-like, androgynous silhouettes, and an aura of female empowerment, all elements inspired by the compelling persona of Joan of Arc. We took inspiration from the Medieval Periodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s barbette, which was a very popular headdress accessory up until the 14th Century. The barbette was a band of fabric material worn under the chin and pinned around the head, usually worn together with a fillet, a band of cloth wrapped horizontally around the head and over the barbette. We created our version of a modern-day barbette and headband using clear plastic bands, which, together with the holographic effect of the make up, create a contrast to the romantic lace, embroidery and feminine shapes of Natalie Constantinidouâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fall/Winter 2014 collection. Our editorial story is fused with contrasting elements of futuristic modernism and romanticism, in an attempt to represent some of the clashing trends in this seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fashion.

Apart from the notion of female empowerment surrounding the character of Joan of Arc, there is also a sense of innocence and fragility in regards to her identity. The young peasant girl who claimed she had divine guidance that turned her into an unlikely warrior overnight, is possibly one of the most controversial characters of the Middle Ages. Divinely inspired or merely insane? Our editorial story attempts to portray this perplexing French heroine, stripped off her armour and male soldier attire. The unique pieces from Efieriâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Blanc collection, are transformed to resemble the white linen medieval undergarments worn underneath the armour, symbolising the delicate and vulnerable nature of a young child hiding behind the semblance of a strong warrior. Efieriâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s total white collection features strong silhouettes paired with futuristic shapes and soft transparency plays, perfectly representing this seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest summer trends.

The highly original and very successful Pivot wall cabinet designed by the young Israeli designer Shay Alkalay in 2008 introduced a completely new type of drawer. By reducing the height of the Pivot wall cabinet and combining it with an (integrated) top it was possible to create an extremely practical and very distinctive desk. The Pivot Desk is an elegant addition to any home, but does not look out of place in the lobby of a hotel.

Another Space has invited the Berlin-based art space insitu to curate an exhibtion in Copenhagen as part of the festival Artist Run. As the curators have never experienced the exhibition space at first-hand the name, floor plan, images and their imagination of the space became the starting point for working on the show. Eight artists were then invited to contribute with work that in some way or other touches upon the idea of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;another spaceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, both in terms of location and concept.

BRAM BRAAM Bram Braam transforms existing architectural elements of given spaces and interrogates the process of perception of the architecture itself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From 250 000 cm3 to 23 768 cm3â&#x20AC;? displays a larger volume forced to fit into a tinier one. As the title suggests, Braam transforms volume of space by squeezing the shards of a large glass cube in the confines of a traditional museum vitrine.

M A H O N Y “Das älteste Stück Ding”, by the collective Mahony, presents the reconstruction of “the oldest piece you ever touched”, exhibited in the National Maritime Greenwich, England. Inspired by this bizarre object and the fact that mankind is possessed with defining the oldest/newest or greatest/tiniest objects, Mahony made a replica out of clay and shoe polish using a blurry picture taken secretly at the museum as reference.

In “Lost Horizon 1”, Pia Greschner rigs the postcard beach cliché into an ominous space. Although the video presents a paradise-like landscape with palm trees on an idyllic beach beneath bright blue sky, the spatial feeling is disrupted by the violent sound of helicopters. Although we never see the helicopters, the expectation of a possible terror or upcoming drama distorts the peaceful feeling. *SCREENSHOT FROM ATCUALL VIDEO PROJECTION

L U C A V A N E L L O For “Untitled”, Luca Vanello took the topic “another space” quite literally. He sanded the wall of a fourbedroom in the Danish asylum Center Sandholm, transformed the dust into colour pigment and reversed it to liquid paint again. By painting a portion of a wall from the exhibition space with this paint, Vanello adds a new layer of history to the space itself. “Untitled” displays a part of a space that’s publicly inaccessible: restricted by entrance permits, bureaucratic rules and defined by limbo life situations. The work is realized with the support of Ismael Deboub.

ULRICH VOGL In his piece, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Studioâ&#x20AC;?, Ulrich Vogl twists a lens showing a photograph of his art studio. In doing so, he turns the art studio itself into the theme of a small artwork, thus illustrating the idea of the artist studio as a space where thoughts and ideas circulate. By cutting out the windows in the image, the lens generates the poetic illusion of a real illuminated space.

Above all, Wolf von Kries is a collector. Random objects, anecdotes and the like have been accumulated during travels, unplanned meetings, and other social interactions. His contribution to the exhibition, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lichenâ&#x20AC;?, is a symbiotic association between a fungus and algae with a potential lifespan of over 4000 years that lives as an intrinsic cosmos: without territory, independent from soil and almost entirely from sun. It survives even Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most extreme environments.

S I N T A W E R N E R Sinta Werner presents poetic collages dealing with the perception of architecture. In her series “Milos”, Werner creates new spaces from photographs of Milesian landscapes. She changes two-dimensional photographs into three-dimensional images and constructs subtle illusions and visionary spaces worth getting lost in. In “Space Collages” Werner’s interest in a staged reality appears, the boundaries between real space and backdrop blur.

MARKUS ZIMM E R M A N N Markus Zimmermann brings with him his own universe, where hand-made furniture, small-scale models, and material surplus are integrated into an expansive sculptural environment. Almost thought as a parasitical sculpture, the modules of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Backpack-Archivesâ&#x20AC;? stage their autonomy. Produced especially for the show, the piece is made to be adapted to any room and to be installed by any person upon individual preference.

Insitu is a non-profit space for contemporary art in Berlin, founded in April 2013 by the curators Marie Graftieaux, Nora Mayr and Gilles Neiens and was enlarged 2014 by the participation of the curator Lauren Reid. The two-room souterrain is located at Kurfürstenstrasse 21-22, in the middle of the new gallery district of Berlin-Schöneberg. The name insitu refers to the curatorial team’s understanding of curatorial practice as being necessarily « in situ » in terms of cultural, social and geographical spaces. The exhibitions will be complemented by talks, performances, lectures and video screenings.

For its inaugural year insitu has planned an exhibition cycle of 8 episodes dealing with fundamental questions surrounding the production of art: from the blank wall of the studio, to the jungle of the art market. The team is looking for possible answers to their questions by inviting emerging artists from their countries of origin, as well as international artists based in BerlinMarie Graftieaux (* 1981) has many years experience in gallery management and also the cofounder of NuN, an exhibition space located in a private ground floor apartment in Berlin Neukölln. Nora Mayr (* 1982) has been realizing different curatorial projects since 2008 and coordinated the International Studio Program at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien for three years. Together with Gilles Neiens (* 1985), who started his career in the art world in various galleries, they curated the group exhibition »Kann es Liebe sein?« on the topic of love in contemporary art, shown in Berlin, Luxembourg City and Vienna in 2012. With previous commercial gallery experience in Sydney, Australia, Lauren Reid (* 1983) is an independent curator and Coordinator at Node Center for Curatorial Studies.

Another Space is a project space for art and architecture, initiated by curator Marte Danielsen JĂ¸lbo and architect Nicola Louise Markhus. As a combined gallery, project space and shared office, Another Space will be a meeting place for spatial exploration, collaboration and discussion. We wish to instigate immersions and critical approaches to the crossdisciplinary field and its potentials, through presenting and discussing current tendencies within art, architecture and society. As a non-profit working and exhibition space, we wish to enable experiment, research and reflections on artistic and architectural practices in a wider philosophical, theoretical, historical and social perspective. Our curatorial approach is further based on concerns for spatiality, materiality, sensation, imagination and craftsmanship.
