EDITOR S L E T T E R Our obsession with darker themes has been evolving drastically; from ritualistic ceremonies, to ghosts and witches, we are constantly exploring dark, supernatural themes, as well as the darkness within the human soul. This issue is dedicated to another dark and haunting theme: Circus Freaks. Although the word “freak” has inherently carried a negative connotation over the years, we wish to get past the shock value and also show its underlying, playful elements. For our 14th edition, we have deconstructed and recreated characters inspired by classic, queer circus personas, horror films and comic book villains. Our circus freak characters are effortlessly dark, bizarre and mysterious, while at the same time portray the theme of malformation with distinctive charisma and playfulness. This month’s design section offers an exclusive preview of the “COLOUR MY MYOPIA” event, showcasing the hand woven IMANDECO chairs. Our art section is dedicated to the digital illustrations of the talented, local artist George V. Antoniou. A R I S T O S

MALFORM AT I O N Every circus troupe has its Ringmaster, the opening act of the show. The Ringmaster is a mysterious character with hidden talents. He is primarily responsible for introducing the circus cast to the audience, as well as interacting with the audience throughout the entire duration of the show. Given the pivotal nature of the Ringmasterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role, we attempt to portray this character with an imposing, voluminous and deformed silhouette, incorporated with unconventional fabric combinations. Infused with fetishistic elements and a playful attitude, our Ringmaster comes to life, ready to open the show.

A B E R R A T I O N The classic horror film Hellraiser (1987), particularly the filmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main antagonist, Pinhead, served as the prime inspiration behind our male editorial. We were inspired by the perfectly graphic and intricate grid tattoo on his head covered in needles, to create a similarly sharp and defined design on the face. The clean, geometrical lines emit a composed feel to the calm exterior, thus heightening its contrast to the inner emotional turbulence of the character. The main trend presented in this editorial is the unconventional pairing of sportswear and tailoring: high socks and sneakers from Raf Simons and Rick Owensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; collaborations with Adidas, paired with oversized tailored pieces and short shorts.

The Puppet Master is a very mysterious and theatrical circus character. Apart from its literal connotation of a puppeteer that manipulates inanimate objects in order to tell a story, the Puppet Master can also have a metaphorical interpretation which is much more sinister and malevolent. In that case, the manipulative nature of the puppeteer transgresses into a vicious and destructive power - the ability to control people. Our Puppet Master character is fundamentally constructed around the latter trait and is surrounded by a trophy collection of mannequin body parts that convey her dark and mischievous essence. Using various fabric textures and materials, from neoprene, rubber to silk and mesh, we created layered looks that highlight the multi-dimensional quality of the character. George V. Antoniou is a digital illustrator based in Larnaca, Cyprus. His work is editorially inspired with striking attention to detail and expressionistic paint strokes that construct a distinct aesthetic identity. Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s digital illustrations portray dark and powerful themes, explored and conceptualised through visual metaphors inspired by contemporary fashion and pop culture references. We are confident that we will see more of him in the future and are looking forward to his upcoming portrait exhibition, featuring some of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most influential and inspiring personalities.
