end journey of the

but an adventure has just begun for “The Heartsworth” family

Above: Infiniti Custom Homes owners Rich and Stacey Rendon with their children, Nathan, 8, and Lindsey, 10.

Over the course of this past year, Grand Rapids Magazine has taken its readers on a Design Home adventure. We followed along as Stacey and Rich Rendon, owners of Infiniti Custom Homes, built the fabulous 7,500-square-foot home known as “The Heartsworth” in Ada’s gated Skyevale community. We enjoyed a vicarious view as they took on the monumental task of transforming the blueprint-and-schematic-sketched dreams into a brick-and-mortar reality with many spectacular amenities. By J. Stapleton Burch | Photography by Michael Buck

Exterior The home is immediately impressive upon approach. Its meticulous landscaping was entrusted to Wade Vugteveen, co-owner of DeHamer Brothers Garden Center. He selected the plants, flowers, trees and other landscaping elements that best highlight the home’s unique features and distinctive design. “Wade always goes above and beyond my expectations,” Stacey noted. “It’s so important to have the right people on your team, and when we work with DeHamer Brothers, I know the landscaping is going to look fabulous.” The island features a weeping white pine, with a Sherwood flame Japanese maple by the garage. The corner hosts a contorted columnar white pine, while dawn redwoods grow by the road. Even before initial site preparation gets underway, the Rendons put a lot of thought into how a home will be placed on its lot in order to take advantage of the site’s natural attributes. This home is perfectly situated to make the most of its two-acre wooded lot overlooking a nature preserve. It offers expansive views, yet provides privacy where needed.

p

Partnering with them for this fantastic journey was the award-winning architectural firm, Visbeen Architects, who designed the majestic home. Wayne Visbeen and his staff are renowned for incredible designs with an architectural punch. The Rendons are equally known for their attention to detail throughout Rich’s meticulous build process. It is often Stacey’s additional finishing design

touches — typically focused on practical functionality — that puts a house over the top from a homeowner’s point of view. They draw from a cadre of top-notch professionals to ensure every little detail of the home is value-added and that it measures up to their high quality standards. David Israels and the new Klingman’s were also aboard for our adventure. We were excited to have this venerable furni-

ture store with its quality products, fantastic interior design staff and longtime Grand Rapids legacy involved in the project. They added the final decorative dimensions that transformed the house into a home — just in time for our ultimate reveal at the charity gala held in late August to benefit Bethany Christian Services. Founded in 1944, our benefiting char-

ity partner, Bethany Christian Services, is among the area’s most respected adoption services organizations. Their mission is to find a loving family for every child, with services that extend from adoption, foster care and pregnancy counseling to family preservation and strengthening. On an annual basis they provide free and confidential counseling and other supportive services to more than 60,000 chil-

dren and their families. We extend our sincere appreciation to area businesses that contributed silent auction items for the gala, which helped to raise additional funds for this compassionate cause. The event was a joyous conclusion to our Design Home 2013 project. Throughout the Design Home process, we not only shared the distinctive design elements of this exquisite home,

but also introduced the various talented team members the Rendons brought on board and entrusted to help breathe life into “The Heartsworth. As a result, this traditional family home is filled with surprises and lots of exciting little twists that inevitably will keep its new homeowner family happy for years to come. Welcome to Design Home 2013.

Stacey took the artful X-style design that Visbeen Architects incorporated in the window treatments and repeated it throughout the home. It’s a unifying theme that is subtly reflected in windows, cabinetry, woodwork and even the home furnishings and accessories from Klingman’s. Metal roofing accents from Eikenhout Roofing add style along with durability.

Overhead, the steeply pitched roof and multiple gables play an important role in the profile of the home. According to Greg Sheridan of Eikenhout Roofing, Stacey chose the GAF Camelot II lifetime designer shingle in a charcoal tone for a premium look. “It has an upgraded architectural style that is suitable for such a luxury home,” he noted. The rooftop also features durable metal accents that add an extra touch of panache.

Known for their attention to quality details, the Rendons turned to Overhead Door Company of Grand Rapids for the home’s garage doors. Locally owned distributors of nationally renowned products, they offer one-stop convenience for sales, installation and service of a full line of garage doors and openers. “The Heartsworth” features coachman-style doors by Clopay. Although they give the appearance of painted wood carriage doors, they are actually low-maintenance steel with a PVC overlay that offers the value of insulation against the elements without the upkeep required by typical wood doors. Their lighter weight ensures many years of trouble-free service.

Lantern-style coach lights from The Lighting Corner in Grandville illuminate the garage and home’s entryways. They supplied the wide variety of hard-wired lighting used throughout the home as well.

Find them at your Living Kitchen dealer. Experience the entire line of Sub-Zero refrigeration & wine storage and Wolf cooking products in full-scale kitchen settings. Plan, compare, brainstorm, & create a dream kitchen that gets every ingredient just right.

The home’s stylish exterior is defined with graceful architectural elements mixed with subtle industrial touches that add intrigue. The exterior boasts fire-resistant and pest-proof paintable fiber cement-board siding made by James Hardie Building Products from Fox Brothers Company. It is complemented by a stonework façade from Belden Brick & Supply Co. that lends a sense of durable timelessness. Stacey worked Heather James at Belden to select the exterior colors and the perfect stone to correspond with the welcoming hues of the interior.

Interior | Exterior | Repaints | New Construction

A harmonious flow from the home’s exterior to interior was established by using the same natural stone used on the façade for some interior applications as well. The stonework (veneer) is a mixture of Sherwood and Willington stone by Rolling Rock. Thinly sliced from genuine stone to expose its rich color variation, the earthy tones of browns, grays, rust and charcoal are flecked with touches of mica, which add sparkle in the sunlight. It was installed by mason contractor Aaron Baeder of Ophoff Masonry, who was also responsible for all of the masonry work on the home’s exterior. He veneered the same product to the stone-surround of the outdoor kitchen suite and the fireplace surround. Inside it shows up again in the entertainment and bar areas of the home’s lower walkout level. Spectacular outdoor living spaces are another hallmark of the homes built by Infiniti Custom Homes. The same attention to detail that is found throughout this home is also evident in its outdoor family oasis. The expansive stamped concrete patio includes a fully functioning kitchen suite with a built-in barbeque housing a Wolf grill and outdoor-grade Sub Zero refrigerator from Gerrit’s Appliance. It is complete with a freestanding Napoleon linear gas-fed patio-flame fireplace from Builders Fireplace. The addition of glass media adds extra sparkle to the flames.

Audio Video Interiors is proud to have been selected as the Audio Video Contractor for the 2013 Design Home.

The same stonework veneer from the front of the home was also used to wrap the outdoor kitchen suite. (Stone from Belden Brick & Supply Co.; applied by Ophoff Masrony.) Its custom concrete cooktop was created by Hard Topix Concrete to match the top of the fireplace surround, whose asymmetrical flare offers just enough space for drink glasses. They also created a matching tabletop nestled in the corner that keeps utilities out of sight. Interior Designer Lauren Greiner from Klingman’s Design Studio added finishing touches of inviting comfort to the patio with a selection of coordinating furnishings. This outdoor haven overlooks the undisturbed nature preserve and pond at the back of the property, and was made immediately beautiful with plush grass sod installed by landscapers, DeHamer Brothers Garden Center.

The striking Howard Miller floor clock in the corner was donated by Klingman’s owner, David Israels, for the silent auction held at the Design Home fundraising gala that benefited Bethany Christian Services.

Foyer/Living Room The “WOW” factor starts at the front entryway with its graceful arch flanked by distinctive cornice columns framing the multi-paned entry door. The Rendon’s quest for superb workmanship led them to select Phillip Elenbaas Fine Millwork to supply the exterior and interior doors and doorways, along with the distinctive crown molding, beams and trimwork used throughout the house. Carrying on a generations-long legacy of fine millwork, owner Ben Elenbaas specializes in creating a wide variety of highly detailed custom wood components — including what was used on the staircases — that not only complete a home’s interior, but also add a definitive designer aesthetic. Infiniti Custom Homes called upon a trusted master trim carpenter, Kevin, to expertly install all of the custom trimwork. He was also responsible for a variety of other custom woodwork projects throughout the home. Stacey also worked closely with Sales and Design Consultant, Jessica Fitnich of GrandRapids-based Woodways Custom to create amazing one-of-a-kind cabinetry and shelving in the home. According to Stacey, Infiniti’s construction supervisor, Jay, was highly instrumental in bringing all of the home’s distinctive custom elements and definitive characteristics to fruition. It’s that kind of thoughtful focus on long-term quality that distinguishes a home built by Infiniti Custom Homes. The Rendons chose Grand Rapids-based EPS Security — the national award-winning leader in security and life safety services — to protect The Heartsworth. Beyond safeguarding against burglary and intrusion, EPS Security offers a wide gamut of home services. Homeowners can take advantage of the EPS Total Connect solution to monitor and control a wide variety of home operation and environmental conditions through a cellular or Internet signal, from smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide detection to furnace and sump pump failure, video surveillance, remote access control and more, all monitored locally from their UL-listed/FM-approved, Five Diamond-certified Central Station, supported by a large cadre of around-the-clock operations staff and security professionals.

Lauren Greiner, Interior Designer with Klingman’s Design Studio, selected a transitional style of furnishings for this family home. “It’s a mix of old and new, without the commitment of contemporary or traditional looks,” she described. “It’s a style that is easy to picture yourself living with. It’s clean and simple, yet so beautiful.” Every item she selected works together with the beautiful color palette expertly applied both inside and out by All Condition Painting. Her selections create the perfect combination of function and fashion that is as comfortable as it is chic. Imposing beams from Phillip Elenbaas Fine Millwork support the grand sweeping ceiling height of this sunny great room that opens up balcony-style to the upper level.

This inviting Canadian-made Napoleon Fireplace (LHD 62 model) from Builders Fireplace Co. in Lowell is one of the biggest linear units. The fireplaces throughout the home encourage friendly gatherings while offering that special ambiance that can only be found fireside. Hard Topix Concrete created this custom treatment known as “Fairview Taupe” colored concrete vertical surround for this dramatic linear floating fireplace. “The two-inch hearth in ‘White Sand’ has an eight-inch drop down face,” noted Hard Topix representative Drew Bleeker. “On top we created custom veining in the same color as its vertical surround.” The fireplace itself is gas-fed. Its direct-vent construction keeps the heat indoors, and its flexibility allows year-round use by illuminating various colored crushed-glass media with lights instead of flame. “Other media can be used as well, from driftwood to cannonballs,” explained Peter Klaver with Builders Fireplace. “It’s like fire art.”

Just off the kitchen, the hearth room offers another comfortable fireside gathering space with a more traditional Napoleon direct-vent gas-log fireplace. Here, Hard Topix created a standard hearth with a stone edge and a stamped slate-textured top. The same stone used on the home’s exterior (from Belden Brick & Supply) cozies things up from floor to ceiling and creates a natural vibe paired with the richly stained flanking custom shelving and cabinetry designed by Woodways Custom. Rich, dark “Sienna” colored hardwood floors from Rockford Flooring was used throughout the main level and the stairway landings. Made by Bella Cera, it features five-inch-wide planks of solid maple, hand-scraped to enhance the grain of the wood and create a very distinct look. “Maple is a very hard wood that easily meets the demands of today’s modern family,” explained Brian Tobey, sales consultant with Rockford Flooring.

Kitchen A fantastic kitchen that is as warm and welcoming as it is functional is another hallmark of Infiniti Custom Homes. Beautiful custom-designed kitchen cabinetry from Woodways Custom makes a homey-yetgourmet statement in this spacious kitchen. While the overall style is traditional, the well-balanced design includes lots of modern touches. Elements like X-style mullion glass doors and fully integrated panelized appliances keep the kitchen in stride with current trends, while the inset construction of the cabinets provide a timeless feel. Richards Kitchen & Bath Showroom provided provided high quality Kohler fixtures and faucets, which were used throughout the home. The apron sink in the kitchen sports a traditional bridge faucet and reflects that unifying X-style design.

Cool, clear, water ... courtesy of Wahlfield Drilling Company who drilled the well for this property.

Other key furniture elements from Woodways Custom take this kitchen over the top. They include an integrated display hutch for dish storage, valance toe kicks, and large-scale decorative legs incorporated into the design of the oversized island that not only provides plenty of workspace, but also serves as a magnetic gathering spot for casual family meals and entertaining friends. Note the X-pattern reflected again in its seating from Klingman’s. Overhead, a special treatment given to the treyed ceiling helps define the space, along with the chandelier-style lights from The Lighting Corner. Stacey worked with them for all of the hard-wired lighting fixtures throughout the home.

A fold-away pot-filler faucet extends from the wall above the range, adding convenience for the household chef. Top-of-the-line appliances from Gerrit’s Appliance complete the kitchen, including a built-in style, 42-inch wide, side-by-side Sub Zero refrigerator with a panel front. It sits flush and blends in with the cabinetry. The same custom cabinet treatment was given to the Swedish-made Asko dishwasher. The kitchen also boasts professional-grade Wolf cooking appliances. The range sports extra burners, and the Wolf microwave is a unique below-the-counter built-in that springs open like a drawer with the push of a button.

Decorative hardware, such as these eye-catching cabinet handles and designer-style doorknobs sourced through the third-generation-run Grand Rapids business, Modern Hardware, adds extra ĂŠlan in the kitchen as well as other spaces of the home.

ALWAYS CONNECTED ACCESS YOUR SYSTEM FROM YOUR CELL PHONE EPS Total Connect is a versatile technology allowing control of your EPS security system in the palm of your hand. The kitchen’s creamy, warm-glazed silk cabinetry really brightens up the space, and the ceiling treatment with its V-groove accents, which are also incorporated into the design of the cabinetry, lends a casual element. The look really comes together with the unique granite chosen for the countertop and island surfaces from Top of the World Granite, sourced through distributor Pascucci Marble & Granite. It has a marble-like appearance with veins of chocolate and flecks of gold, and makes the perfect companion for the apron sink with its single, extra-large bowl sourced through Richards Kitchen & Bath Showroom in Grand Rapids.

Stacey worked with All Condition Painting and selected classy, neutral colors for the majority of the home, which sets the scene for the striking furniture and defining home accessories from Klingman’s.

Dining Room The kitchen flows into the spacious and sunny dining room with its inimitable ceiling treatment and glass French doors that lead conveniently to the outdoor kitchen. The overhead chandelier-style lights match the kitchen lights above the island, promoting a nice flow and style.

The extra wide hallway between the kitchen and garage features shoulder-height wainscoting and overhead drum lights from The Lighting Corner. Specialized custom cabinetry from Woodways Custom offers plenty of storage space and creates a stylized look in the family communication and drop center. The spacious mudroom features lockers from Woodways Custom that are supported by a boot-changing bench with storage drawers below.

More custom cabinetry and shelving keeps things organized in the sunlit laundry room. It is complete with side-by-side large-capacity front-loading washer and dryer from Gerrit’s Appliance. Woodways Custom cabinetry lends stylish support in the powder room, with Kohler sink, fixtures, faucet and commode from Richards Kitchen & Bath. Pendant lights above the sink are from The Lighting Corner. The stenciled walls add an attractive design element.

Stacey’s artistic X details add that custom-made designer touch to this very special home. Flooded with natural daylight, the sizeable gathering area at the top of the stairs provides a family oasis with a fun overlook to the lower level. The nice lines and great shapes of Klingman’s transitional furnishings emanate a welcoming vibe in this space.

To accommodate the wishes of the new homeowners’ daughter, the home’s neutral color palette was put aside for this bedroom. The overhead chandelier and matching bedroom furnishings complement its feminine flair.

The upper level features a children’s wing with three large bedroom suites, each with their own private bathroom equipped with top-of-the-line Kohler fixtures and granite countertops. Lighting solutions throughout the home reflect a specific style in each room. ORG West Michigan, who specializes in custom closet organization systems, configured each of the closets to specifically accommodate the individual user. “Boys and girls have different clothing storage needs,” explained company representative, Beth Tyler. “Boys need more shelves than rod space and girls need extra rod space and more drawers.”

The game table from Klingman’s presents an ideal gathering spot for family game night.

The Rendons always like to add fun, family-oriented design details to the homes they build, such as this really cool “secret passageway” on the bedroom level that leads to the spacious kids’ retreat/bonus room/media room over the garage. Kids and adults alike will love this space that houses an in-home media room and family theater. Audio Video Interiors (AVI Group) wired the home to support all of the integrated audio and video needs of today’s modern family. Their expertise and services prove a home can have an abundance of technology without it overwhelming architectural details or compromising interior design. The sound insulating carpet from Rockford Flooring cleans up easily with water.

Master Suite A fantastic master suite is always a priority in any Infiniti Custom Homes project. The master in The Heartsworth is no exception. To create a sense of private retreat, it is elevated three steps from the home’s main level and includes a casual sitting room and a tranquil outdoor deck with pictorial views.

The soft, welcoming hues painted by All Condition Painting create a calming vibe throughout this magnificent master suite. The luxuriously soft DuPont Smart Strand carpet from Rockford Flooring provides insular warmth and low-level resonance as well as durability, comfort and a sophisticated style with its cut pile. A built-in bookcase is conveniently integrated near the sitting area, which is flooded with natural light.

The dreamy walk-in closet was organized by ORG West Michigan. With showrooms in Grand Rapids and Holland, their custom-designed closet organization systems are typically delivered with white-glove service, with each piece of clothing measured and personal needs defined to allow for exact specifications. Here their ORG Home System in “Driftwood” finish blends perfectly with the bathroom colors and Woodways Custom cabinetry. It provides different rod heights for his-and-her hung clothing, along with shoe compartments, shelves, and undergarment and lingerie drawers. They maximize space down to the inch and the system can be easily retrofitted as needs change over the years.

The tiled walk-in shower with its spectacular trim is balanced by a magnificent stand-alone tub, with fantastic Kohler fixtures from the ever-reliable Richards Kitchen & Bath Showroom. With a futuristic flair, they extend from the mirror sink-side, provide gentle overhead rain in the shower, and arise from the floor at the bath. Stacey’s unifying design element shows up again in the faucets’ X-shaped handles.

With the aesthetics and sensibilities of a pampering spa, the master bath is an oasis by itself. Its chrome, soft gray and white color palette exudes vacation vibes. The bright, barreled ceiling overhead lends an open, airy feeling, while the tile floors gleam with glass accents. Gray-toned cabinetry — custom designed for the room by Woodways Custom — is topped with “Fantasy Brown” quartzite counters, fabricated and installed by Top of the World Granite. This stunning premier stone was sourced through Pascucci Marble and Granite, a 40-year premium materials distributor whose three facilities include a Grand Rapids location. Imported from India, it resembles granite, but it’s a denser and harder stone, perfect for a bathroom application. Fashionable cabinet handles from Modern Hardware ramps up the style. Stacey’s stylish design tweaks add sensible utilitarian details. She incorporated a dedicated vanity space adjacent to the furniture-quality storage hutch from Woodways Custom that keeps a woman’s beauty products handy but out of sight. The pair of chandeliers from The Lighting Corner adds a touch of glamour, while the fixtures above-thesink add a classy glow to the task at hand.

It has been our pleasure to bring light to the Design Home 2013.

Lower Level The lower level of this home features some phenomenal surprises that will give family members and guests plenty of reason to linger. A low-maintenance tile floor that mimics the look of wood helps to define the well appointed bar area. The bar is complete with a full-sized stainless steel side-by-side refrigerator/freezer from Gerrit’s Appliance and an accommodating apron sink from Richards Kitchen & Bath. The backsplash features the same natural brick that flanks the fireplace. The abundance of custom-built features from Woodways Custom includes cupboards, cabinetry, a pantry, and the beautiful bar topped with a magnificent oversized granite bar top from Top of the World Granite by distributor Pascucci Marble & Granite. Three pendant lights from The Lighting Corner hang over the bar, which is also lit by recessed lights in the ceiling and shelving. The pub-style theme is carried out in masculine decorative knobs and hardware from Modern Hardware.

Filled with luxurious wood accents, the sunken entertainment area is sizeable yet cozy. It exudes a masculine vibe. Hard Topix Concrete created a six-inch hearth and wrapped the direct-vent gas log fireplace from Builders Fireplace with a three-sided surround in “French Gray.” In turn, Infiniti’s master trim carpenter framed it with dark stained custom wood panels, complete with columns and mantle for a handsome result. The fireplace is flanked with floor-to-ceiling light-colored natural brick from Belden Brick & Supply Co., which makes a gorgeous contrast for its floating shelves. The subdued shelf lighting from The Lighting Corner adds to the room’s pub-like ambiance, as does the leather sofa, metal-accented wood table and high-top table and chairs from Klingman’s. At the bar, the backs of the barstools echo this home’s signature “X” theme. (This is one case where guests will clamor to let X mark their spot.) Neutral berber carpeting from Rockford Flooring completes the picture. The Rendons always include foam insulation under the basement-level floors of the homes they build to provide a thermal barrier and an extra level of insulation, so even when the snow is swirling outside, this room will remain cozy and warm.

616-897-0848 The self-contained guest suite provides plenty of privacy for overnight guests. Special features of the lower level guest bathroom include the stone-textured backsplash that is actually a newto-the-market woven-look tile, juxtaposed against the David Benjamin design concrete sink, custom designed by Hard Topix owner, David B. Eerdmans. It was ground a little deeper where the water hits the basin, exposing the stones to give it a natural, timeworn appearance.

One of the many fun surprises on the way to this home’s lower level is the in-home gymnasium. Special attention was given to added height-dimension requirements to accommodate its in-home half-court basketball court, which can be observed through glass from the downstairs landing. It’s also big enough to accommodate additional exercise equipment. However, this home has other spaces to house workout equipment and even sports a Zen-like yoga room, so go ahead and tip-off freely.

At Bethany Christian Services, we are so grateful for partnership opportunities like this one. We would be unable to serve children in need without the help and contributions of others. Thanks to the support of Grand Rapids Magazine and the Design Home Gala, more children will know the love of a family. Special thanks to the individuals who purchased the Scenes of Hope photographs at the event. We trust that these images of actual children and families served will be an ongoing reminder that, together, we can truly make a difference through kindness and generosity to others.
