Mackinac Island

L

ong before the movie “Somewhere in Time” was released in 1980, Mackinac Island was known as a romantic honeymoon destination. It’s a great choice if your wedding takes place from May through October. Horse-drawn carriage rides, strolling through little shops together, bicycling or hiking around the island, exploring its natural wonders, lazing in the park at the foot of the fort, sharing sunrises and sunsets — it all provides the ideal environment to concentrate on each other. The Island offers a wide variety of places to stay, from modern, full-service resorts to the old-world charm of boutique hotels and charming B&B accommodations. You can relive the gracious elegance of days gone by at the majestic Grand Hotel. Even as you approach the car-less island aboard the ferryboat, it seems to dominate from its hilltop location. Imagine watching sunsets together from the west end of the famous 660-foot porch that overlooks the Straits

of Mackinac and the iconic bridge beyond. Or enjoy the views across the sweeping lawn down to the pool made famous by 1940s-era movie star, Esther Williams. In operation since 1887, it’s listed as one of America’s Historic Hotels and is renowned for its four-star service. Breakfast and multi-course dress-up dinners are included in the cost of their no-two-alike famous designer-created guestrooms and elegantly appointed suites that are named after America’s first ladies. Wander the grounds and pose for pictures in the Tea Garden with its beautiful water fountain and lavish gardens; share a sundae at Sadie’s Ice Cream Shop that features Michigan-made Hudsonville ice cream. Enjoy a round of golf at the adjacent course with a casual lunch at The Jockey Club restaurant, or pamper yourselves at the onsite full-service Aveda salon. Their concierge will help coordinate everything you need to create an unforgettable honeymoon.

The Inn at Bay Harbor

Back on the mainland

I

n the Petoskey area, honeymooners have a choice of three Boyne resorts, all within a 27-mile radius. Ski buffs planning a winter honeymoon will find everything they seek at Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs (which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary), or Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls — where they recently opened a first-of-its-kind-inthe-state half-million-dollar waterslide at their Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark. However, since it opened in 1998, The Inn at Bay Harbor — A Renaissance Golf Resort — has proven to be the most popular year-round honeymoon resort. Owned and managed by Boyne Resorts, The Inn at Bay Harbor became a member

of the Renaissance Hotels & Resorts family in 2003. Its many accolades include TripAdvisor’s Certificates of Excellence; Golf Digest’s “Best In State” recognition, GOLF Magazine’s Silver Medal Award for Overall Excellence and is named a “Top Resort” and “Top Spa” by Condé Nast Traveler readers. Overlooking the striking crystal-blue waters of Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay, its lakeside location evokes the romance and ambiance of the state’s great turn-of-the-century Northern Michigan inns. It offers the lifestyle of yesterday, yet the luxury of today. Honeymooners can enjoy a stroll along the shoreline in search of the area’s famous Petoskey stones, and

return to a lakeside bonfire complete with s’mores. Of course, there are always drinks poolside at the Cabana Bar, lounging around in hammocks or their iconic Adirondack chairs, being pampered in The Spa, dining waterside, golfing at the world renowned, award-winning Bay Harbor Golf Club, riding bicycles through the Village or shopping in nearby boutiques. Guests can choose from 134 rooms, including 84 one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites with a variety of spacious floor plans. Since many of them include private balconies, fireplaces, and kitchens, be sure to let them know it’s your honeymoon when making your reservations and they will help you find your ideal accommodations. nother delightful honeymoon destination can be found in the Lake Michigan resort town of Ludington, with its expansive state park, multiple beaches, beautiful marinas, boutique gift shops, photographers’ gallery, Center for the Arts events, waterfront restaurants, gastropubs, breweries and bars that will appeal to everyone. The mansion, built in 1905 by lumber baron Warren Cartier, was one of the most progressive of its kind in the day and still impresses guests with its classic opulence and original architectural details. Each room features a different type of wood in its original state, and the two owners since Cartier have been able to locate and reinstall much of the mansion’s original décor, from chandeliers and rugs to many furniture pieces. “But this is not your grandmother’s house,” noted Sue Ann Schnitker who has owned and operated the property with her husband Gary for the last eight years. “The mansion is all the things that B&Bs typically are not,” Schnitker pointed out. Each of the five guest rooms has its own bathroom, terrycloth robes, TV and DVD player (along with a shared library of over 300 DVDs). It’s a great opportunity for honeymooners to bring along a DVD of their wedding ceremony to relive that special moment together. Guest services are offered in a “mini kitchen” area that includes a microwave, refrigerator, icemaker, French-press coffee, and tea, available 24-7. “A lot of our honeymooners stay in the King’s Suite, and if they want, I take breakfast up to them,” Schnitker said. “We love helping honeymooners make their dreams come true.” The King’s Suite includes a spacious bedroom with a kingsize, four-poster bed and a separate sitting room with a fireplace. There are flatscreen TVs in both rooms. Off the sitting room, a large balcony overlooks Ludington Avenue and you can enjoy sunsets year round from there. The suite’s bathroom features its original sink, soaking tub, foot tub and an eye-popping 108-year-old ribcage shower, all in perfect operational order. “It’s an amazing shower with a rain showerhead and energizing water that spouts out all over, up and down the ribs. It’s pretty special,” Schnitker explained. They have also added a modern Jacuzzi tub to the room. Guests have the run of the house, which includes dining, living and music rooms, a library and den, along with beautifully appointed gardens.
