Relationship status? Single. Favourite drink? CC and dry/cider in the sun. Whiskey with a chaser indoors. Any vices? I like to give people gentle frights. My favourite is when you go to a mate’s house and stand outside a window till they notice you. But the last time I did that she called the cops. Fair enough. I had the wrong house.

A talent contest hits Manukau next week. Generation Next will arrive at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre with auditions on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 October, with the final concert on Thursday 20 October. The grand finale will feature the top five finalists performing alongside New Zealand’s current chart topping performers including Savage, David Dallas, Aaradhna and more. It’s more Idol than Singstar. Korn have gone dubstep. Don’t believe us? Look for their new track ‘Get Up’ from their upcoming album The Path Of Totality. And then drop your jaw at the fact that Korn bassist Fieldy said “Jonathan loved it”. The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 2012 induction nominees have been announced and include Beastie Boys, The Cure, Donovan, Guns N’ Roses, Heart, Joan Jett And The Blackhearts, Red Hot Chili Peppers and plenty more. Beastie Boys? Go figure. Our guess is with GN’R, RHCP or Joan Jett – simply going by the fact that the Rock Hall is a total boys club. Adele has made New Zealand music history as she holds on to her top spot on the RIANZ Top 40 Album Chart this week. 21 has officially claimed the title of the country’s longest running number one album at 24 weeks, surpassing previous title holder Shania Twain and simultaneously clocking up 90,000 albums sold in New Zealand (six times platinum). Big Day Out

First gig played? When and where? Snatch Bar in Ponsonby, July 2010. I’m an actor by trade. Been in the game 10 years and I have never been as nervous before a show than I was on that night. Thank God for brown trousers. First gig in attendance? My mate Phil’s, who was more nervous than I was. First album? Pretty sure it was Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony. Favourite current album? David Dallas’ The Rose Tint. A lot of the songs are about being an artist and dreaming big, and the struggles of staying focused and on track and being responsible for your own success. As an actor and comedian, I can relate to that. When I grow up I wanna be? Rich! So I can feed my dog and get rid of my student loan! Stuff being famous. Unless that fame leads to more riches, which in NZ doesn’t really happen. First job? Kitchenhand at a rural coffee shop in Pleasant Point, South Canterbury. I was ten and I was paid $10 an hour. Epic swag. Guilty pleasures? Goody gum drop ice cream and spooning. Nothing quite like a good spoon. and cover this year’s festival for both R&V’s Behind the Vines and TVNZ U, get to attend and cover other shows like the upcoming R&V Soundcheck in Auckland and international festivals in both Australia and Europe and also learn the ropes of TV presenting and get to host their very own weekly segment on U live. The contenders are Govind Sandhu from Sydney, Conor Beggs, Gil Amir and Selena La Fleur from Auckland, Magdalena Schoeman from Christchurch and Tim Couch from Dunedin. The Show Me Shorts full programme will be announced this week as it heads around the country from November. A little taste of the films you can see for “a good time, not a long time” are; animated road-movie Nullarbor by Alistair Lockhart, out-of-work children’s TV mascot working as a waiter (which sounds great as a comedy or drama) Blue by Stephen Kang, Sam Holst’s story about a seventeen year old meat worker Meathead and meta-foley-artist-within-a-film tale Cold Turkey by Gavin Keaven.

Making Tracks NZ On Air has released the latest results from the third round of the MakingTracks new music funding scheme in which 14 artists receive a $10,000 grant to record a song and make a video, and a further 17 artists get $6,000 for a video only. The $10K grants go to Awa, Bang Bang Eche, Dane Rumble, Delaney Davidson, Die! Die! Die!, Gemma Copas, Goodshirt, Jon Lemmon, Jupiter Project, Like A Storm, NO, Sharpie Crows, T54 and Tiki Taane. The $6K grants for video only have been awarded to Collapsing Cities, F In Math, Family Cactus, Gin Wigmore, Illegal Banditz, K.One, Lips, Parallel Dance Ensemble, Pieter T, Princess Chelsea, Ria Hall, Shotgun Alley, The Checks, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Urbantramper, Victoria Girling-Butcher and Wilberforces.

More like “Indie Day Out” as people have been saying. Wow, what a total zinger. In no particular order, the first announcement for the Big Day Out 2012 includes Best Coast, Foster the People, Cage the Elephant, Gin Wigmore, Girl Talk, David Dallas, Odd Future, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Battles, Cut Off Your Hands, Mariachi El Bronx, Ghost Wave, Beastwars, MayaVanya, The Living End, My Chemical Romance, Kanye West, Soundgarden, Kasabian and Röyksopp. Tony Hawk is also coming along for the ride. As per, there’s plenty of bitching and moaning about the iconic festival about how people don’t know the bands, there’s too many New Zealand artists, no big names (there’s plenty), etc etc. So here’s a little comforter – it’s only the first announcement. It’s the 20th anniversary of the BDO, they’ll be putting on a hell of a show. Yeah, it’s fun to bitch, but it’s a mother of a good festival and odds are you’ll end up going anyway. If you don’t know the bands, listen to them and get excited.

The album is available for pre-order now and will follow R.E.M.’s final single release ‘We All Go Back To Where We Belong’ which hits airwaves later this month. Tyler Ramsey has released his solo effort Valley Wind on Fat Possum, and told Apes on Tape that his other (and more well-known) project Band of Horses will be recording their fourth full-length after their very extensive touring, saying “it’s full on for the next record”. The band was meant to tour with and open for Kings of Leon before the kerfuffle that led to the family band pulling their dates. Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, AKA She & Him, will be releasing a new album later this month. A Very She & Him Christmas (which you would think should have a December release) comes with She & Him wrapping paper or knit hat and mittens if you preorder the album from Merge Records.

Drake’s sophomore album Take Care will be released later this month. The singer told Rolling Stone, “I hate singles. With this album, I want to tell a whole story. I don’t want people to just hear a piece and judge the album on that,” and reportedly wanted to work with the likes of the Weeknd, Jamie XX and Florence and the Machine on the album. Helmer of the webisodes Kevin Tancharoen is attached to direct, along with MK:R writer Oren Uziel. Wes Craven says that a fifth instalment of the Scream franchise isn’t off the cards. Talking of Scream 4, Craven said, “The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.” A new teaser is online for the second season of Game of Thrones. Noise music isn’t for everyone. Your grandfather probably wouldn’t be into it. Although he’d respect the composition more than you, which would make him smarter than you, and in turn make him cooler than you since smart is sexy. So we’ll see your cool sexy grandfather at the one-off Black Dice show.

Arts, crafts, performances, music, film and a crazy big amount of other awesome stuff hits K Rd, Upper Queen St, Cross St, Pitt St, Poynton Tce and Beresford Square this Thursday. Despite only running for three hours, this social market packs a hell of a good evening into one of the better ways to spend a Thursday.

General Release

Chris Cornell looks like a deviant. He looks like he should have had a sex tape leak from that time he banged Pamela Anderson. Did he get it on with her? Surely. All those big time rock’n’roll bands from the ‘90s are all Eskimo cousins with one another from when musicians actually made money.

Adapting board games into movies is the new thing Hollywood is doing. But despite what you may have heard, Real Steel is not the adaptation of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. It’s just Hugh Jackman running around with robots he’s using to fight other robots where the robots knock each other’s robo-blocks off.

Wellington Waterfront

General Release

Any time in movies when people are in New York City and it’s winter and they’re on a date or just pondering life/love/relationships, they always head down to that ice skating rink in front of the Rockefeller building. Basically that’s what people in Wellington can do except on the waterfront. How cool is that?

Just what the people ordered – little blue things running around. The Smurfs are back. Where did they go? They died a dignified death. But they’re back now with the help of Katy Perry and Neil Patrick Harris. Your kids will love this film, but you’ll just realise that Gargamel is actually really evil and cannibalistic.

He’s been touring like crazy around the world, but he’s back and well educated in all matters performance. It’s Disasteradio! It’s the world premiere and opening night of The Truth Game in Dunedin this Friday at the Fortune Theatre. Newspapers are a funny business in the digital age, which this drama portrays in all the theatrical beauty you’d expect.

Annabel Alpers is signing off as Bachelorette, but hasn’t said it’s the last of her days as a singer. More early 20th century goodness in the theatre – the classic nautical tale with songs that you don’t know but somehow know, Anything Goes. Gangsters, debutantes, snooty mothers, nightclub singers that lay on pianos, saucy screwballs and other characters that would only fit the 1930s make up this Broadway classic.

Hey Joe It all began on the day Jimi Hendrix died. A young Joseph Satriani ran up to his football coach during a training session and immediately announced he was quitting to become a guitarist. Was it the universe’s way of replacing one genius with another? Joe says he can only guess. “In my 14-year-old brain, I felt I was losing something that I couldn’t live without. That wasting my time playing sports was something I had to stop, and I had to learn how to play music so I could replace what I was going to be missing. It was a very emotional moment.” The fretboard wizard soon discovered he was blessed with a natural skill; he was playing in a band and at high school events within eight months of first picking up a guitar. “I had a talent for being able to get through a song. I could start it and never stop, even if I played certain parts wrong. What I felt with guitar was that I was moving forward. I felt like there was room for me to grow.” Fast forward 40 years and Joe, or `Satch’ as he’s known to his fans, is one of the most successful and respected guitarists of this era. His passionate style of playing has earned him significant praise, while other virtuoso guitarists are often criticised for technical wankery or speed over style. “Jimi Hendrix was very dedicated to each and every song. He played differently on each song, he was quite remarkable that way. “I thought you know, this is where I come from, these are the players that I admire, so I make sure that I play uniquely on each song rather than just self-promote.” Satch has sold millions of records, given guitar lessons to Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Larry Lamond from Primus, and revitalised the instrumental concert experience with his G3 festivals. But despite the lengthy list of achievements, he’s not the coke-sniffing rock star one might expect – in fact, he sounds pretty humble. “You can’t believe any of that stuff. For me, the reality is I get up in the morning and I wonder if I’m going to be able to play as good as yesterday.”

Ask any guitar groupie who the six-string king is, and Joe Satriani will probably be the first name that comes out of their mouth. The 55-year-old virtuoso has spent decades training and working with the best guitarists in the world.

Satriani’s latest project is Chickenfoot, a collaboration between Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith, and former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. The poultry-inspired name was simply a temporary title for the group while they thought of something better, but thanks to the fans it stuck. Joe disputes their status as a supergroup, and argues they’re just a group of friends who enjoying playing together. “We just sounded so good together that I think it shocked all four of us because we weren’t planning on it being a band, we were just planning on having a little celebrity jam at the end of Sam’s show. It just really popped out of nowhere and it was a very random event. It really surprised me.” Chickenfoot’s chemistry was obvious on their self-titled first album, a mixture of hard rock and blues. The project was a surprise success, reaching gold status in Canada and America. Despite recording on dozens of projects, and even providing backing vocals on Crowded House’s first album, Satch seems legitimately excited for the September release of Chickenfoot III. “Although we spent less time making it, the time we did spend was much more focused. “We all came into this second record wanting to pull certain things out of each other. Sammy was saying he wanted me to get wilder and sort of loosen up. I was telling him I wanted to write songs for him where he would sing in different registers.” It seems there’s only one success that has completely eluded Satriani: he’s been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards without a single win, second only to R&B singer Brian McKnight’s 16. The closest he’s come is suing Coldplay for their Grammy Song Of the Year ‘Viva la Vida’, which he claimed used original portions of his 2004 track `If I Could Fly.’ “I think that the nominations-and-not-winning has contributed greatly to my success,” laughs Satriani. “I think if I win, it will be the end of my career. I secretly hope that somebody else wins, so that I can keep moving forward with all this good fortune that I’ve had.”

Q&A: Mel Parsons Local treasure Mel Parsons is currently on a coast-to-coast nationwide tour hitting 20 stops. Mixed and mastered by many experienced local and international hands, her sophomore offering Red Grey Blue has just hit the stores. So what’s the deal with Red Grey Blue? Well, they were lyrics from the first track of the eponymous album. I just liked the sound of it. I guess it’s just got to do with the endless cycle of emotions in life. One minute things are great, and then everything sucks the next – and life makes its way back up again. Yeah, cycles. My palette knowledge is shit. What happens when you mix those colours? Funny how you said that. Mix them all and you get brown. Not a poo brown, but a genuine, earthy brown. It’s kind of a beautiful culmination of colours, and they each have their own emotions that go with them. So yeah, mix passion, ennui and sorrow, and you get this amalgam of experiences – which I find works well with the album. What’s changed since Over My Shoulder? That’s a good question! I don’t know, really. Life, I suppose? There’s no stopping that train. It just trucks around, and different stuff happens (bad and good), whether you like it or not. And I guess that’s all inspiration for songwriting? Yeah, of course. I mean, I write songs about the things that happen around me and in my life, and the music’s a reflection of the whole process. That’s my life, an open book. There are a few things here and there that catch my attention and seem like they’d be worth making music about. But I guess I owe a lot to other music and musicians I listen to for inspiration. Live shows are totally what get me going. They’re amazing – oh god, I spend half the time running off to the bathroom to scribble out ideas for my own songs. Live gigs are a fantastic reminder of the fact that I love music, and have to make my own. You just get so caught up in it.

Tell me about these ‘pin-drop’ performances that the Internet keeps raving about. It’s a little hard to describe them, seeing as someone else came up with the term anyway. But I’ll try. I suppose part of it has to do with the fact that quite a lot of my lyrical matter is very intimate, and people can connect with it. I’ll get a room of listeners that stop what they’re doing just to give my music a listen – and there’s nothing more humbling than that. And I tour solo a lot, which makes the whole affair a little bit quieter I guess. Care to share your upcoming plans? Well there’s heaps of stuff to do with the album. I’ve got release gigs to sort out, and then I’ll be touring all around the country. The shows kick off on September 24th at Mt Olympus ski field in Canterbury, and I’ll be making my way around from there. I think I’ve got the dates and venues littered about online. Any life lessons to share from the road? I’d probably say don’t go on the road! Hazards abound, you might get run over! Haha. For me, I absolutely love the travelling. You meet all sorts of fantastic people, and see all sorts of wonderful sights. Sometimes I’d like to just stop and stand still though, I’ll admit that. I don’t think I’m quite at the stage where I can pass on life lessons quite just yet. But I’m getting there.

Q&A: The younger lovers Brontez Purnell has a little band in California named The Younger Lovers, who play some of the catchiest revivalist-garage around. You might recognise him as Junx from Gravy Train – the electronic-pop group that threw Seth Bogart (AKA Hunx) into the scene. The Younger Lovers’ latest album Rock Flawless is being released through Bachelor records. Their latest video for ‘We Are The Younger Lovers/Keeps On Falling Down’ has been online for several weeks. We managed to catch up with Brontez through the magical power of the internet – we left in the CAPS and exclamation marks!! for your reading pleasure. Where abouts are you based? Oakland, CA BABY!!!!!! Got a day job? I work at a pot club in the Castro. I first found out about you guys after watching Vice’s New Garage Explosion doco. Do you think you guys have a fair bit of a fan base? Our fan base is mostly GIRLS, some hot fags, and strangely HELLA bros that like girls and fags. When Gravy Train wound up, Seth went on to do Hunx with a bit of help from Nobunny. How did The Younger Lovers come about after that dissolution of Gravy Train? I started recording The Younger Lovers in 2006. I finished Newest Romantic in 2007 and it came out in 2008 while I was still playing with Gravy Train – about a year before we officially broke up. Hunx and his Punx followed.

The new video is rad. What other dances aside from “Squash The Bug” and “The Sick Twist” can we expect? THE CARWASH (IT’S D I R T Y). Where can all of us back here in New Zealand listen to your tracks? Newest Romantic is on Retard Disco. Rock Flawless is on Bachelor but not available for download, so ask a friend with Euros to buy it for you. Stay tuned though, we got a hand full of 7 inches coming up... Who are you listening to at the moment? The Raincoats, Martha and the Vandellas’ Shoe Leather Expressway, Deee-Lite’s Dewdrops in the Garden, Dirty Cupcakes (our sister band) and other stuff. Do you know much about the NZ music scene? I only know the Coolies. Do they still rock out????? What does the future hold for The Younger Lovers? Hopefully people actually knowing who the fuck we are.

INTERVIEW BY KEVIN KARTUN

Who’s in the band with you? Do you write and record all of it and Adal is the live performer, or are you both the brains behind this operation? I wrote and recorded all of Newest Romantic, and like 99 percent of Rock Flawless (Mateo played bass on a song, Matthew Melton played some guitar, and this guy who plays congos for my dance company, Tagi Maalik, played on some songs). I always start with the drums first ‘cause it’s my favourite instrument right now. Adal joined about a month ago. Mateo has been my main squeeze for two years. Him and Adal were in a teenage band in LA called Das Mega Cool. I’m about to do two new 7 inches – one I record with the boys and one by myself. I’m such an erratic egomaniacal asshole that I don’t want to damage anyone by having them try to record with me! It could be brutal! Tell us about the new album – is it good plain old garage fun or are you trying to get a bit more emotion and whatnot behind the music? IT’S ALL THAT! Newest Romantic was all about teenage love blues – it’s very wide eyed. Rock Flawless is a bit more bitter and intense and if you can imagine more of a dance party. It’s hard to find any digital releases of any of your stuff. What’s that about? Well Newest Romantic I think is on iTunes. Bachelor put out a limited 300 copy vinyl-only run of Rock Flawless. I’m hoping someone will put it out in America so it’ll go to iTunes or something, or people could just order it on the internet. Everything has to be so instant now. Burger Records is gonna put out a tape of it soon I hope. I remember being a Kill Rock Stars mail-order rat and waiting three or four weeks for one record! The times they are a-changing... I’m doing a new record on Southpaw next year. I begin recording next month. What do you do when copies are all gone? Maybe someone will reissue it and do the download thing *fingers crossed*. You know what’s fucked up? I don’t even have a copy of Rock Flawless right now!

A poem from Brontez “Morning Train” (written during a free writing exercise)

Morning Train rolls in Beep! Beep! Over the loudspeaker The conductor speaks “You sir! Who thought it was funny to play at the Edge! I’ve done this job for years and you would’ve been TOAST!” “Toast” - he says (This reminds me that I forgot to eat)

album reviews Wilco The Whole Love

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

lllll

Guitars weren’t made to do what Wilco make them do, but nobody told Nils Cline that; the multi-instrumentalist continues to sharply offset Jeff Tweedy’s exquisite songwriting with dissonant sonic inflections. Having combined all of their best elements, the band was quite right to title their seventh album eponymously, but following up that career high (in a career of highs) on The Whole Love is a somewhat unenviable task. They stumbled on Sky Blue Sky after A Ghost Is Born, but here the outrageous inventiveness of album opener ‘The Art of Almost’

Late Night Tales: MGMT

llll

lll

llll

Heavy, daft, brutal, trippy, eccentric: these are all words that can be used to describe The Hunter by Mastodon. This, their fifth album, continues their fine tradition of making cutting edge metal with an ear for experimentation and melody. If you just want to bang your head then ‘Curl Of The Burl’ or ‘All The Heavy Lifting’ will fulfil your needs. They can also sing a sweet tune when they want, as evidenced on the heart-wrenching title track. How can you not want to listen to a song called ‘The Octopus Has No Friends’? The production is top notch; you can hear every muttered lyric and every punishing drum beat. If you like dense guitar play and a gutbusting degree of rocking out then you need look no further.

It’s been a long eight years for Blink 182 fans; hiatus, Angels & Airwaves, Meet The Barkers. But they’re back, and fuck are they going to be heard. In Blink fashion Neighborhoods is made to be played loud enough to piss the neighbours off. It’s the best of the Blink 182 you’ve been sulking to since you were a teenager. The kerb-stomping rhythm of Barker and Hoppus fused with DeLonge’s melodic axe is tight. The neck-crampingly fast twominute punk ditty and da-da-da chorus is in short supply here. Neighborhoods is more ‘Adams Song’ depth Blink 182. It’s lyrically dark, easily their most cynical and deepest excursion. If you’re after more Cheshire Cat you’re out of luck, and there ain’t no mother fucking. ‘Up All Night’ being the current single-bash just isn’t doing Neighborhoods justice; the back half of the album is where it’s at.

Richard Fearless’ splendidly dark, menacing albums including Scorpio Rising all spent plenty of time on the alternate airwaves during the 1990s. But after the largely tune-free drone of Satan’s Circus, Fearless found himself banished from the coolness pool to dwell in creative shame for seven years. In the meantime, outfits like Uncle and Burial were taking dark electronica on extraordinary journeys, the likes of which were simply unbookable by Fearless’ travel agency. Finally, there’s Translove Energies. Opener ‘Silver Time Machine’ winds in with a singular drone reminiscent of Swans, before building to a dark Bauhaus pop/rock grunge. ‘Black Hole’ reveals its petticoats in a late night techno-groove, with slight nods to York and Goldfrapp. But it’s the sultry, dark erector-set construction of ‘Your Loft My Acid’ and the tough, transcendent, sexy Bloody Valentine grunge of ‘Savage Love’ that finally prove this to be a plausible return.

MGMT’s addition to the exclusive Late Night Tales club resonates passion. MGMT have mix-taped other’s poetry, smoothly spreading their dreamy touch. It contains an array of cult names including The Velvet Underground, The Chills and a cover of Baushaus’ ‘All We Ever Wanted’ before ending in fervour with an aphotic spoken word piece by Paul Morley. It’s as if Marquis de Sade picked each harmonious layer himself, a mix of flawless atmosphere. There’s something special about literary, intelligent music. That’s a description normally thrown at jazz, but it’s apt for this collection of Late Night Tales. The obscure smoothness deserves every part of the album title. Play it for that special someone; it’s a five star album to make love to. Close your eyes babe.

is quick to dispel any concerns. Fairground keyboards give ‘I Might’ a welcome lift and the insertion of whistling where lyrics might be halfway through ‘Dawned On Me’ is a brilliant touch. Finger picked acoustic guitar abounds through multiple unexpected breakdowns on ‘One Sunday Morning’, while ‘Born Alone’ captures Tweedy’s sometimes tortured worldview perfectly. It’s all brilliant stuff and should be typically amazing live.

Batman: Arkham City So much excitement from our resident gamers

AustrAliA’s most infAmous crime story If you haven’t played Batman: Arkham Asylum, you should go rent it now before the new game comes out. It’s definitely the most enjoyable comic book hero game adaptation I’ve played, and like the latest movie, it’s suitably dark. This next step in the Batman saga has already got online reviewers asking whether it could be the game of the year. The premise for Arkham City is that Quincy Sharp has turned Gotham into a cordoned-off prison colony with psychologist Hugo Strange as its warden. As in any horror film, when the blondie who’s being chased runs up the stairs instead of out of the house, what could possibly go wrong? The line-up of baddies is mouthwatering. We’ll come up against the Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Mr Freeze, Two-face, a cockneyinspired Penguin, The Riddler and even Calendar Man. Did I mention you can also play as Catwoman or Robin? Our caped crusader has new offensive abilities in handto-hand combat sections, being able to counter multiple enemies and increased interplay of gadgets with normal maneuvers. Defensively

we can catch and throw back projectiles and use the environment to our advantage. Detective mode returns, as well as being able to traverse the whole of Gotham, falling in style with your cape and grappling hook a la Spiderman. Refreshingly, the entire city is open for exploration from the beginning of the game and is an ‘open world’ five times larger than the area of Arkham Asylum. It’s your choice whether you want to follow the storyline, do a multitude of side missions, take on random thugs or just soar around the city. There are also 400 Riddler trophies to be found as well as the Riddler death trap. All in all you get Batman than ever before. As well as this, we’re treated to a five-part mini-series to bridge the story gap between Asylum and City featuring original music from Panic! At the disco, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Boxer Rebellion and more. The hype surrounding this game online is incredible, and those lucky enough to have had hands-on time at E3 cannot talk highly enough about it. Arkham City hits stores on Tuesday 18 October and I, for one, can’t wait.

Honestly, Jon’s covered most of why this game will rule, but I had to throw in my two cents. Anyone who has played Arkham Asylum knows how fun that game was. Being a game involving one of the most popular and important pop-culture icons of the past 70 years means you already have a fair bit of hype to live up to, and the game did that brilliantly. Hence the overwhelming hype on the blogosphere. The number of Arkham City gameplay teasers available for viewing online could easily pass an entire afternoon. The biggest problem with the first installment was the limitations of the world. Once

you finished the game, you finished the game. Yes, you could do it again on the hard level or play some miniversions involving specific mini-missions, but compared to the proper storyline these had nothing. The fact that this new world is so much bigger means that you won’t be able to finish the game in one great big 48 hour blat. Being able to play as Robin and Catwoman means you have a whole new way to approach the game. And just look at all those costumes, ranging from The Animated Series to Frank Miller’s TDKR. Two weeks and counting.

Whether you perceive it to be an animated classic or an overrated Disney-fied reboot of Hamlet, chances are you’ve made up your mind about The Lion King. John Singleton’s directorial career has veered decidedly towards the mainstream since his work in the ‘90s, something you’d think would make him the perfect helmer for a Taylor Lautner vehicle (and “from the director of Boyz n the Hood” isn’t gonna mean much to T-Lau fans anyway). As with 2 Fast 2 Furious, he proves adept at shooting an action sequence but again struggles to inject the faint glimmer of tension or emotion that could poke

climactic finale. When it does kick in, however, it manages to compliment the artistry without shovelling it into your corneas. The effect is just not as frequent as I would’ve liked, nor is it as salient. Some may find it more practical to wait for the film’s Bluray release rather than be pushed to pay the 3D price, but that doesn’t hinder the fact that The Lion King 3D is still a staggering spectacle.

gorgeous art direction. As with Beauty and the Beast, the tenderness given to the restoration is on a Mother Teresa level. The soundtrack still resonates with the same vibrancy it did 17 years ago, though Timon and Pumbaa’s fartcensoring introductory number may leave corn in your teeth. I hate to repeat a common complaint with 3D conversions, but you probably won’t process the extra dimension for the majority of the film: it only adds to a select number of establishing shots and to the

through Abduction’s double whammy of rote script and wooden performances. Not that there’s anything wrong with doing a Bourne-lite for teenagers, especially one that taps into middle class parental issues by implying your folks might not be who you think they are. By-the-numbers direction and writing, though, require charisma to carry a film and Abduction is abundant proof that Lautner just isn’t the guy for this. The dude is so wooden it’s like watching Pinocchio with abs, his stock moves being shirt removal, sullen and impotent emo glowering, and jaw clenching that is so intense and frequent you begin to worry his carved face might just explode into splinters. He can do the action stuff okay but, since this is a teens’ film, there’s not enough of it. WRITTEN BY STEVE NEWALL

The Round Up, or La rafle in French, first sounded to me like it might be a film about the poison used to kill weeds. This isn’t an entirely incorrect metaphor, considering the film is about the Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup in 1942, where the French police aimed to round up 20,000 Jews to deport to Germany for Hitler’s insane agenda. The police only managed to wrangle just over 10,000 – the remainder having been successfully hidden by Parisians.

What happened to those people who were rounded up is the subject of this film, through the lens of a Jewish doctor, a French nurse and the Jewish families of one tenement. I usually steer clear of films about the holocaust. I’m ashamed to admit I feel like I’ve heard it all. For me and perhaps for others too, I’ve become desensitised to the holocaust; it has become a cliché. Hitler and his many accomplices, all their gruesome actions, have become rehashed scenarios, just words in books and exhibits at museums. The Round Up crashes through this apathy, however, by showing the simple, honest cost of the French government’s decision to choose politics over people. The Round Up isn’t gratuitous, but it is unflinching. Passionately acted, this is liberal France’s chance to highlight the extreme mistake their acting government made in delivering the people they had granted asylum to their own deaths. Damn, Cansei de Ser Sexy are cool. All of these hepcats are absolute foxes. They dress like the coolest, op-shopiest fashion icons they are. They all look great – so a video is always going to do them justice. Especially one where they all look amazing and are watching people do that kind of dancing that can work in a bar, at a club or on the street. There’s a little bit of an instructional element to these dances, which only makes it better. Great job CSS.

This is how you make a great video on the cheap. A few locations, a little bit of spend on costumes that aren’t too in your face, a couple of visual effects, roll with the current video trend (pastel-coloured fixed shots) and take a new approach on it (not being fixed all the damn time). Then get people who really know what they’re doing in the editing suite and stylise the shit out of it, throwing paparazzi style blurs and distorting your focal point. That is how you make a great video on the cheap.

No surprises here – Bjork manages to crank out another good video. This whole Cosmogony/moon app thing that team Bjork has going on at the moment is prevalent in the video, so go ahead and tick the “theme” box. But compared to her many, many video hits, this one won’t be up there with the many Jonze and Gondry pieces of art that we’ve seen come out of the Iceland queen’s stable. Thing is, you just know she doesn’t give a shit if you like it or not.

Wooden Shjips tend to be a mixed bag of boring mixed with entertaining. The video for ‘Lazy Bones’ is no different. Consider this one a great mix of visual art and meme-like zeitgeist images all stirred up with a very hallucinogenic-inspiring sceen-saver. It’s good and it’s cut together well, but after a while it gets boring. If Danny Perez videos are your bag, you’ll dig this. If that kind of layered green-screenery-imagery makes you nauseous, then a) stop being a baby, and b) don’t watch this.

“Oh shit, we’ve got to make a video for the new EP. Can’t we just get stoned and play Monopoly or some shit instead? Wait, why don’t we do both? Yeah! Yeah, and then some dude can come in and interrupt us. Only... only he’s being chased by cops. So they come in, and we get all scared and do some more drugs, but then we open that treasure chest in our living room that was there all along and a mermaid comes out and shoots the cops and we go swimming. Sweet.”

Alt-girls looking sexy. Normal fixed shots of a band playing their instruments. Kaleidoscope effects. All of this has been done before. Fuck the word count, there’s no more to be said.

What a shame – such a great band and such a great song deliver such a boring video. There seems to be no limit to what tUnE-yArDs can deliver on when it comes to amazingly chopped pop, but they really let themselves down with this piece of crap. It’s just a road video. Buddies hanging out, quick self portraits all edited together with a little bit of interpretive dance on the streets and shots of what you see when you’re on a train. Total letdown.

What the hell? Did these guys not want their video to be seen? There’s more darkness here than a North European’s dungeon. The amount of fade-ins and fade-outs are ridiculous. There’s more time being spent on transitions here than there is actual content. Sure, try and throw in a little bit of Bowie-esque effects in editing, but maybe more than a couple of seconds, right? Oh, and of course you have a faceless woman caressing her hair as it blows in the wind. Of course you do.
