Two of our weirdest, bestest, colourfulest bands team up to play the Kings Arms. Yumi Zouma make effortless, nostalgic pop, and have been favourited by the influential Pitchfork. Doprah are revelling in the wake of last year’s excellent debut album and are busy being snubbed by corporate award ceremonies. Go see them before they get huge.

With some pretty out thurr gig posters around town, Carnivorous Plant Society bill themselves as “Mexican fantasy music”. Experience the smells and the sounds at their Wine Cellar gig. Finn Scholes and the crew want to blow your mind and pay for the taxi fare home – and they have a song called ‘Bob Dylan’. Sold.

Not one to be missed.

Killjoy, the recently reissued-on-vinyl masterpiece, is still the meatiest album ever – not just from NZ – but EVER. That opening ‘You Again’ riff; the frenzy of ‘Bitter’, the stuttering grind of ‘Silvercup’ – it’s a bloody classic. The Shihad boys are playing this sucker live at the Powerstation, which they haven’t done since 2009. Get uuup!!!

Queen at the Table is Anika Moa’s excellent new album, and the follow-up to her mummy-core excursion, Songs for Bubbas. With a TV show in the works, Moa is set to be everywhere – and for her Powerstation show, she won’t be on stage, but on the floor! Neeks – a class act all the way.

On the back of walloping third opus Citizen, Trinity Roots will finally have a chance to showcase new material. The title track, an 11-minute journey through dub and jazz, will be a monster. Warren Maxwell, Rio Hemopo and Ben Wood have put in some hard mahi to put on this tour – get your ticket ASAP.

Including Wilson Dixon, Tim Batt, Guy Montgomery, the ridiculous Guy Williams, and The Cavaliers, better save those sit ups until the day after, champ.

Where do you buy a mannequin? Is there a full warehouse of woman and man parts? Where are the mannequin assembly jobs out there, people? Anyway, this is a clever showcase of different mannequins in all their shapes and sizes, presumably rescued from Hallensteins, now glamming it up like free-range hens. An interesting, strange exhibition.

This year, Binns brings another character alongside Ian in the bumbling radio DJ Ivan Brackenbury. Making the most of a worrying three-way split-personality, Tom Binns will surely be a highlight of 2015’s festival.

Handel was one of the greatest Baroque composers. The CSO’S principal Harpist Helen Webby will perform his spirited concerto ‘The Water Music Suite’, amongst others. Bringing the world to Auckland, the Writers Festival celebrates some of the globe’s best writers and thinkers. And with over 16,000 attendees over 100 public events, this year will showcase the best of contemporary, non-fiction, poetry and journalism; all sharing amazing stories and experiences. Celebrating curiosity and adventure, this will be a feast for the mind.

The NZSO performs three astonishing works of the 20th century repertoire. Imagine being engulfed by the forces of nature with Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from his masterpiece opera, Peter Grimes. Ending on Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, this is a monumental two-hour classical extravaganza. Also stars violin renegade Anthony Marwood playing Britten’s Violin Concerto.

Noel Fielding, a man known for playing a seedy merman with a mangina, the Moon, and a naan bread, is finally heading to our shores for two shows. With a mix of stand-up, live animation, music and an appearance by brother Mike Fielding (Naboo), this will be a flat-out party. Fancy dress is highly encouraged.

Enlightenment by Shea Stevenson tells the story of the mysterious disappearance of a backpacker, Adam, and how his family cling on to hope whilst coming to terms with loss. Closing in on themes of grief and liberal sensibility, this is contemporary theatre at its most mesmerising. Intelligent and edge-of-your-seat thrilling, Stevenson has created a powerful piece.

7.30PM, $20-30, CIRCA.CO.NZ

A brilliant bespectacled Irish git, Ed Byrne is celebrating his midlife crisis in a new show, Roaring Forties. Whilst Byrne isn’t quite into the robe and slippers phase yet, he is definitely more cynical, with his rants and frustrations now baring that air of curmudgeon. Still excellent, this is tasty, aged, ripened Ed at its finest.

I know about being sucked into dark corners of the net – reddit - but Second Afterlife takes it to the extreme. When Dan gives up the internet, he is transported into the dangerous web underworld – deleted profiles, broken memes– and must fight his way out of it. A dark comedy, Second Afterlife is ass-kicking fun.

PENNY DREADFUL (S2)

CINEMA RELEASE

SOHO, 8.30PM

This intimate look into the life of late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain is compassionate, smart and unflinching in it’s depiction of a man so naturally inclined to brilliance, yet so ruthlessly at odds with the world around him. Nine years in the making, this is more archaeological dig than rock-doc, with director Brett Morgan and executive producer Frances Bean Cobain (Kurt’s daughter) extracting a wealth of previously unseen home video recordings, demo-tapes, art works and photography to bring together what is a documentary of exceptional vitality. Talking heads are kept to a minimum and we are instead given an incredibly intimate look into the private life of Cobain and those closest to him. From early home videos to remarkably candid at-home footage of Cobain and wife Courtney Love, this is enthralling documentary. The film does occasionally veer into stock ‘grunge-doco-montage’ territory and at over two hours it is too long, but all in all this is a captivating music documentary that should be seen by fans and non-fans alike.

Set in 19th century Victorian London, Penny Dreadful is a stylish, gory, slightly sexy marvel of a psych-thriller. In a series that weaves together classic horror stories, ghouls are fought, blood is spilled, and worried women hurry down cobblestone alleys. A gripping new addiction, Penny Dreadful’s second season is a must watch for horror fans.

TYRANNOSAURUS BURGER 450 QUEEN ST AUCKLAND

Tucked up on an elevated plaza on the corner of Queen St and Turner St in Central Auckland is TyrannoSaurus Burger, a hidden gem that serves food of exceptional proportions. Owned and operated by Dae Kwon In, (who is pretty much a one-man band), Tyranno’s burgers are all handmade and served between artisanal buns brushed with butter and garlic. It’s not just about burgers, however. This ex-pat Korean serves up a wicked selection of Korean favourites – his spicy ramen soup with cheese has got to be tasted to be believed, there are Buffalo wings - Vietnamese, Kiwi, Korean and Californian style, and sandwiches – the pulled pork is something of a local legend. His breakfasts have to rate as being among the “best bang for your buck” in the central city. The Tyranno Breakfast will cost you $12 and comes with two eggs, crispy bacon, two pork sausages, a hash brown, a side of artisanal bread, mushrooms and tomatoes. The $9 eggs benedict comprises of two soft poached eggs on a toasted English muffin with wilted spinach, hollandaise sauce and your choice of either bacon or salmon. The $8 chilli scrambled eggs are served with chilli peppers, capers, onion, pear and Parmesan on a slice of toasted ciabatta. On top of all this are endless variations and options to suit every taste. Dae Kwon set out for Australia five years ago in search of opportunity. He settled in Sydney and popped over to NZ to take a look. He liked what he found – “Kind people, no racism, peaceful environment and beautiful countryside” – and stayed. After cooking his way around the nation (he learned his trade from his mother who runs a small eatery in the city of Jeon-Ju South Korea), he settled in Auckland and opened TyrannoSaurus. He loves Tui beer, tennis, pool and rugby – “a big powerful manly sport” – and sometimes dreams about living in Queenstown.

Best Hot Chips

I wasn’t much of a chip eater until I married a woman who was absolutely lives and dies for them. She took up coffee-drinking so she could spend more time with me, so I thought I had better reciprocate and develop a taste for deep fried potato slices. Sadly, now I can’t live without them just like she can’t live without her multiple daily coffees. It’s hard to get a bad chip, but it does happen. Getting an outstanding chip, that’s a whole other story. In our quest for a decent chip we have hunted high and low and made great sacrifices for the greater good and here are our recommendations. The Queen Vic Chippie Cambridge is on State Highway One just as you come into the centre of the town. It’s next to the Z-Station and across the road from the BP and KFC. It’s a traditional fish and chippie that makes most of what it fries from scratch. Real onion rings, freshly battered fish, burgers served in sourdough buns, fresh potato fritters and mushy peas, but it’s the chips that stand out for us. Every chip is perfectly cooked. Lightly browned and crispy, these babies can’t wait for home. We usually rush to the car, add extra salt and lots of Tabasco and eat ourselves silly. $5 gets you a generous portion for two but we can usually chomp our way through twice that much with a few potato fritters and onion rings to boot. Al’s Deli is a Canadian joint on City Road just off Upper Queen Street in Auckland Central. Bagels are their big thing but they also do that French Canadian speciality, poutine, fries covered in gravy and cheese curd. The vegetarian thing precludes me from the gravy, but the chips themselves are magnificent. Cut from unpeeled spuds, the result is a strange an alluring juxtaposition of soft and crispy textures that is utterly beguiling. I can often be found here, head bowed low over a smouldering bowl of deep fried pleasure, hand and mouth working in perfect harmony. Auckland’s Ponsonby Central is a collection of eateries that includes Jimmy The Fish, a fish and chippie that specialises in hand-cut agria chips. Agria potatoes are a Dutch innovation, a yellow fleshed floury spud that is perfect for frying and roasting. Jimmy’s chunky fries are crispy, crispy and crispy with a delightfully soft centre. He throws on oodles of salt and the result is near perfection. The lemon wedges on the side are a nice addition that enlivens the experience. ANDREW JOHNSTONE

A DECENT RIDE IRVINE WELSH

COCA-COLA LIFE

Irvine Welsh has possibly written his funniest, filthiest book yet in A Decent Ride. Following the life of messed up gonzo-porn star, misogynist hustler and taxi driver, ‘Juice’ Terry Lawson, Ride will have you navigating through oodles of dark, twisted plots and predicaments. With a bunch of less-thandesirable supporting characters, including Wee Jonty MacKay, a man with the genitals and brain of a donkey, we find Juice in a slightpickle: someone has robbed him of his sexual prowess and he must go on, with only the game of golf to guide him. I am so sold on this already.

COCA-COLA

BOOK

WORLDWIDE

What is Coke Life? It’s not a new Pitbull single – it’s the new brand of Coke hitting our shores, the one you see with the green label. The stats speak for themselves – 35% less sugar and a 35% kilojoule-reduced formula compared to normal Coca Cola. Instead, it included stevia – a natural sweetener that is easier on the teeth – and will appeal to young adults who realise they can’t be woofin’ down spoonfuls of that sweet sweet white stuff every day. A conscious move towards the booming health market, this is a useful option for them Coke lovers on the go.

Upfront, in depth and in tune, The Wireless is here to give you more. Whether its insightful stories that uncover basic Kiwi truths or entertainment in the digital age, this is a refreshing take on current new stories and opinion. Add this to your favourites bar and escape the agendas – The Wireless has got the answer.

A book about youth, protest and loss, Some Here Among Us focuses on the political and social ramifications of war in the late 1960s, which then translates forty years later into a post-9/11 world. Following Race, Candy, Chadwick and elusive mate Morgan Tawhai through the four decades, this is an enthralling, passionate novel for our times.
