This year marks Raggamuffin’s move from Rotorua to Auckland. NZ’s favourite reggae dads UB40 are back for the first time since 2008, including singer Ali Campbell and Astro. Ice Cube and Cypress Hill will headline the hip hop stage, with a smattering of great local acts featured throughout the day. Skank on, jah live, rude.

Aqualung! The Jethro Tull show is back in the fold, with vocalist/flautist Ian Anderson and company playing a generous set of greatest hits. With albums like Thick as a Brick and Heavy Horses, the 70s rock stalwarts are also set to debut some recent material from Anderson’s latest album Homo Erraticus. Tickets are selling fast.

Ripped jeans, yo-yos, chain-wallets, cassettes, Lemonheads. The altrockers return to Auckland and Wellington for some intimate shows that will remind you how fortunate we were to be alive for the 90s alternative revolution. Stepping in for Airbourne on Shihad’s upcoming tour, the mighty Datsuns are set to be busy lads this summer, also playing separate gigs in support of their latest (amazing) record, Deep Sleep. Expect tight pants, beers and meaty screams. Playing in five cities across the country, so go get your dose of revivalist garage rawk, Mfer.

Hearing The War on Drugs for the first time recently, I’ve clearly been missing out – luckily, there are still tickets to their second show at Auckland’s Powerstation, the first selling out in days. With meticulous songcraft that walks a fine line between torture and grandeur, their debut Kiwi performances will be an overdose of awesome.

With bassist Paul Martin already being a local rock legend, Devilskin have deservedly hit the Kiwi big time, scaling the top of our charts with pummeling debut record We Rise. A ferocious live act infused with metal and operatic beauty, they also have a rabid fanbase that would bite your face off in a moshpit.

FVEY was one of 2014’s best rock records, which means seeing Shihad on this tour is a must. Airbourne have recently pulled out due to personal circumstance, but friends of Toogood The Datsuns have gracefully stepped in. I can already smell the bourbon sweats. This hard rocking troupe plays nationwide over the New Year’s period.

‘Roar’ was everywhere when it came out in 2013 – it was #1 here for 11 weeks. Fair call: it’s a mighty fine pop tune. Yep, Perry knows how to sing ‘em, and occasionally, she even writes her own. Playing Vector for two nights, Perry lays the pop schlock on thick and flaunts her best assets.

Run the Jewels 2 is 2014’s fashionably late cool kid-album, with Killer Mike and El-P outdoing themselves on every track. Killer has recently said his piece on Ferguson and the death of Michael Brown, so expect to see an equally intense show at Studio. Also, with Joey Bada$$ about to release one of 2015’s big records, shit’s looking hectic.

That rhyming name/hit combo, that hair, that blasé video – Milky Chance are one of this year’s reluctant crossover pop successes. Curiously billed as folkrock, they’re more at the forefront of the “whatever wave”, which favours sparse riffs over electronic beats. “I’ve never danced like this before,” you say. Just wait until that song kicks in.

A paradise tucked away up north surrounded by majestic peaks, Marsden Cove Marina is boasting its own unique summer festival. Headlining the gig is ‘80s rock band The Narcs, as well as Sharon O’Neill, Swamp Thing, Mother Motor and truckloads more. There’s public transport to and from the show as well. Summer vibes are comin’.

I never sleep, ‘cause sleep is the cousin of death. I also never sleep on Nas tickets when a second Auckland show has been announced, because that first one sold out pretty quick. Illmatic is one of the seminal debuts in rap history, and he performs the whole thing along with other Nasty hits. Unmissable.

I have a soft spot for Prince-aping riffs smothered in pop sheen, which comes in abundance at a 1975 show. The girls love ‘em – maybe because they have a song called ‘Girls’. They also have a song called ‘Chocolate’, and who could hate that? That’s right, no one. Get ready for Britain’s next big band.

Bodega is the quintessential music lover’s bar. Having hosted a stellar list of international acts on its rather intimate stage, the venue gets it right every time. I’ve heard a bit about Crafters & Co – not just that they do great coffee and food as a café, or tasty beers and wines by night – but particularly that they do off-licence liquor sales, which means you can take home some unique alcoholic delicacies and chug ‘em when you feel. A truly welcoming vibe.

I love walking into a bar that doesn’t actually feel like a bar, more like… home. This is the feeling at Goods & Service, the latest public watering hole that is flaunting some seriously good craft beer, not to mention vintage films via projector and a lucky stuffed possum on a wall.

AUCKLAND

If you think you’ve clocked the expensive beast that is Ponsonby dining, then make sure you’ve stopped in to Orphans Kitchen first. This is a quaint, eclectic restaurant that will soon be on every Nike flaunter’s wish list. Venison, buffalo curd, watermelon and karengo all make appearances on the menu. This ain’t no broth, son.

CHRISTCHURCH

Quit monging over your gross plastic squares and witness the real deal – the Canterbury Cheesemongers. With wholesale, mail orders and in-house baked breads available, cover your bases and ignite your cheese passion.

CONCH KITCHEN & BAR 155 PONSONBY RD AUCKLAND

Change is the only constant in life and change is what the iconic Conch has gone through of late thanks to the mastermind of owner, builder and architect Brent Hollands. The well-known Ponsonby landmark has been popular with anyone who knows anything about good music and great coffee. Now when you walk through the front door you will find a colourful section of bar stools and tables; walk a little further down and you enter what is one of the coolest new bars and eateries in Auckland. A great selection of tap beers and wines priced ever so fairly along with some tasty food insure you will want to keep coming back time after time.

RABBITHOLE CAFÉ 203 JERVOIS RD AUCKLAND

Feeling bored with your ho-hum B&E breakfast? Ever fancied a café experience that deviates from the norm, but have no idea where to turn? If you’re passing through Herne Bay, Rabbithole Café offers the fantastic, the divine and a hint of the unexpected. Let’s bury a bit deeper and go back to the beginning… across from Bayfield Primary School in Herne Bay, Rabbithole has been tempting the taste buds of city fringe dwellers for over three years. Featuring an eclectic menu that will meet all desires without breaking the bank, there is something for everyone here. Get involved in one of their Famous Free Range Chicken Ribbon sandwiches, banana bread or magic mushrooms. Use your imagination with that one. Rabbithole offer gluten-free options as well as a selection of organic food that is built on alternative nutrient rich ingredients – not to mention some of Auckland’s best coffee. Caffeine and superfood... a perfect mix. Starting with its name, what’s really cool about Rabbithole Cafe is its Alice in Wonderland theme, our table numbers handed to us as playing cards (we got the Queen of diamonds). The rear courtyard is situated perfectly for all day sun and provides a private, relaxing area for all. We were amazed at how friendly and attentive everyone at Rabbithole was. Food is delivered promptly and prepared beautifully, and the décor and outdoor areas are intriguing points of difference. Staffed by an awesome crew, Vinny, Kerry and Dominique will ensure your time here is one to remember. Owner Ms. Fleur Reynolds, who was overseas with her partner when we visited, wanted to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. So again, if you’re in Herne Bay, give in to temptation and head down to Rabbithole Café.
