Australia’s Hunters & Collectors became renowned the world over back in the ‘80s for their electrifying, sweat-soaked sound. The band’s legacy includes ten studio albums (such as 1986’s Human Frailty and 1989’s Ghost Nation) and almost 2000 live shows. After a brief reunion in 2009, the band has been persuaded to perform one very special headline show at Auckland’s Powerstation.
Music-comedy powerhouse Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra take their instant party on the road to celebrate their long-anticipated new album, Be Mine Tonight, a winning collection of beloved Kiwi tunes made even more singalong-able thanks to the band’s uniquely irresistible ukulele style. The show features sublime musicality, hilarious audience participation and Shortland Street star Amanda Billing.
Two of the emerald isle’s finest singersongwriters, Mick Flannery and John Spillane, hit the road together this November. The pair has previously teamed up for a series of concerts in Cork and Dublin and now take their acclaimed show to antipodean shores. Flannery’s latest album By the Rule recently shot to # 1 on the Irish charts and was followed by a sell-out tour of Ireland and the UK.

THE WELLINGTON INTERNATIONAL UKULELE ORCHESTRA ‘Wake Up’. “He recorded it in a hotel bathroom for us, when he was on tour, jammed into a tiny space.”
FESTIVAL FAVES THE Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra are about to embark on a national tour in support of their new album Be Mine Tonight. Taking a breather after their recent excursion to China and Japan, founding musician Age Pryor found a few moments to chat over the blower from his digs in Auckland. Auckland? Really? Not Wellington? “Ah, yes. I relocated up here about six years ago to teach music at Unitec parttime.” But he’s still a Welly at heart, he assures me. A few years ago Pryor led a number of projects including the Woolshed Sessions, recorded on Jane Campion’s Nelson farm and two solo albums. These days his main focus is the “Ukes” (as he calls them), with whom he plays and co-manages with fellow musician Gemma Gracewood. “It’s incredible,” he remarks, “that the band is still together. As such it’s scattered to the four winds these days. Some are back in Wellington. I’m in Auckland. Gemma’s in New York and there’s another in Singapore.” Truly international locals! The band’s reputation has built up over the years based on a live show of madcap hilarity and spontaneous audience participation. But behind the hijinks is a finely-tuned musical group

who have have truly cemented their place in New Zealand’s entertainment scene. Their unique sound – a choir set to magnificent ukulele riffs and licks – is now in hot demand worldwide and they’ve long been the darlings of festivals and special events with tickets for their shows snapped up almost before they go on sale. The last time I talked to Pryor must have been over nine years ago, when the Ukes first started playing bars and gigs. Right from the start the aim of the band was to be interactive. Pryor relays tales of playing in cafes and sending people off happy having sung and boogied away to the Ukes’ interpretations of well-known songs reinterpreted for the ukulele. “The sign of a good song is that it can be played on a uke. Like a school choir doing Beatles’ songs because they’re so easy to arrange. Ukes have become the ‘new recorder’ – simple, interactive and easy to get into.” Uke music is everywhere – from the immensely popular Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain to the avant-punk of Amanda Palmer and the skilled quirkiness of James Hill, a favourite at the last International Festival of the Arts. Hill also features on the new album, and did a brilliant little solo on Aaradhna’s
Other guests on this all-Kiwi repertoire include Amanda Billing. “Amanda’s got a great voice, she does choir work too. She’s been in shows like Cabaret. She’ll be touring with us. We got her to do vocals on ‘E Ipo’ (an old Prince Tui Teka number).” Although in hot demand by the likes of Fat Freddy’s Drop and Neil Finn, vocalist Lisa Tomlins also found a moment to work on the project, with an old Aotearoa track ‘Long Ago’. That one also includes Hawaiian uke specialist Pi’ikea Clark. Pryor tells me that Pi’ikea is schooled in traditional Hawaiian music, “from the ones who were the keeper of the knowledge. He is a really fine player and we really learned a lot from his traditional playing.” Recently the Ukes toured Asia, opening them up to a whole new audience. “We found China very challenging, especially the language. I don’t speak Mandarin. They don’t speak English and even relying on gestures was hard because they do theirs different to us. But we learned a lot. Chinese audiences are very polite,” Pryor says. “Japan was different as we mainly did festivals and community events. And English is not a problem. Also the Japanese are less inhibited once they understand what you are doing. They know about New Zealand. So that helped.” So, how will Kiwi audiences react in the coming month when the Ukes arrive in their local halls and theatres? One thing you can rely on – plenty of fun and hilarity. “Be prepared to sing your lungs out – From Lorde to Schubert, you’ll know all the songs!” TIM GRUAR

MINUIT’S FINAL FLING
Minuit has never generated enough income to be a full-time operation for all three members, and while Ryan has a side-line as a DJ, Ruth has worked a variety of jobs to support herself and Paul so he could concentrate on managing Minuit. Jobs on Ruth’s CV include receptionist in a brothel, a social worker for Child, Youth and Family and a set builder on various Peter Jackson films. It was while working on King Kong that she discovered she was carrying a cancerous tumour that required immediate surgery. Though successful, it left her unable to have children. She writes about the cancer in her 2011 book, I Felt Like a Fight, Alright? – “You stupid, stupid thing. If you kill me, you die too.”
AFTER 15 YEARS, pioneering NZ electronica band Minuit is calling it day and saying goodbye to their fans with a final tour. “It is not a split, it’s a retirement,” explained vocalist/lyricist Ruth Carr on the phone from Wellington, the town she now calls home. Minuit grew out of a three-piece rock band formed in Nelson 15 years ago with Ruth on drums, Paul Dodge on Guitar, Ryan Beehre on bass and “another guy” on vocals. Ruth loved being a drummer, “sitting up the back”, a position which suited her perfectly. When Ryan turned up to practice one day with a drum machine, Ruth thought she was gone. Instead, the vocalist was sacked and Ruth found herself out front, a place she has never felt entirely at home. This discomfort partially informs the decision to retire. Being out front has never been easy for Ruth and with other priorities taking precedent, the time seemed right to bring the band to an end and get back to what it means to be Ruth Carr. The band leaves behind leaves a legacy that includes five albums, a series of groundbreaking videos and a song, ‘Aotearoa’, which is well on its way to

becoming a local classic. The idea for ‘Aotearoa’ came to Ruth one morning while she was driving across the Southern Alps. As she stared across the vistas, she was struck with thoughts about what being a New Zealander meant to her, and before she knew it, she was singing the refrain, “You and me, we are NZ.” The band took an unusual approach to the video by asking fans to submit photos of “their NZ”. It turned into a monster and from an avalanche of submitted images, 1000 shots were chosen to be edited into a narrative. TVNZ used the song for their 2009 Waitangi Day coverage theme. Inventive visual accompaniment to the music has long been a feature of the Minuit brand. Their first video was made by friend Alyx Duncan. The largely inexperienced filmmaker delivered an otherworldly cinematographic narrative of enormous maturity. Duncan went on to create another one of the band’s iconic videos, ‘Fuji’, and the band have proven to be dab hands at the craft as well. Dedicated to the art of “do it yourself”, this close-knit trio has proven to be an endlessly adaptable creative team.
Going to work on the band’s second album, The Guards Themselves, Ruth thought she had recovered from the psychological shock that the cancer wrought and set about writing lyrics that weren’t about cancer. “When I listened to them later, I realised every song was about the cancer, proving once again that you can run from these things but never hide.” The band’s final album, 2012’s Last Night You Saw This Band, is a fitting epitaph for 15 years of dedication and hard work. Daring, inventive and mature, this is the kind of album bands aim for but often never quite achieve, an interlocking series of crafted tunes, each feeding into the other in mutually complementary ways. It is a maze of delights, with each progressive song offering new surprises in sound and thought. For a last offering, it seldom gets better than this. As for the future, there may be more music, “or not”, as the case may be. For now Ruth is content to be loving mother, (she and Paul are proud parents of an adopted son), and to otherwise concentrate on the art of being a good world citizen. Records label-mate Tim Guy and spent three months as the stand-in violinist for Berlin-based NZ psychedelic ensemble An Emerald City supporting such international heavyweights as Black Mountain and Black Angels. In mid-2011 Sam released his second Bond Street Bridge album Spring Summer Awesome Winter, on Monkey Records in partnership with An Emerald City’s Banished From The Universe label.
Remembering Sam Prebble IT’S A COMMON story in the music industry; that to get to a level of success means you leave a trail of carnage behind you. But Sam Prebble was different. Everyone who worked with him had a lasting respect for him, many becoming friends. This quality combined with a solid work ethic made Sam one of the most sought-after musicians in Auckland. He was touring and planning future projects right up until his sudden passing on Thursday 23 October. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he played with a myriad of bands including The Broken Heartbreakers, The Dylan Storey Band, Reb Fountain’s Bandits, Great North and The Nina McSweeney Band, as well as appearing as a guest with artists as diverse as An Emerald City, Matt Langley, and Tim Guy. He recently began touring a new project called Mermaid and Mariner with partner Emily Carter, as well as The Bitter Years with Carter, Alison Millar and long-time collaborator Brendan Turner. In the last few years he also cofounded the Wine Cellar Strings. But for many fans his finest project was Bond Street Bridge. Sam described this solo work as “psychedelic electrified folk

music”. Rich vocal harmonies, jangling guitars and wailing fiddles combined to tell stories of love, mistakes, and the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Sam quickly became a fixture of the Auckland music scene after moving from Wellington in 2006. Bond Street Bridge began in 2008 as a solo project, evolving into a dynamic collective including some of the most exciting musicians in the Auckland underground. In 2008 Bond Street Bridge released critically lauded debut The Mapmaker’s Art. The album and the live show have impressed audiences, promoters, and critics alike, with Phil Reed describing The Mapmaker’s Art as “one of the finest collections of homegrown music to cross this desk in a while” in Real Groove magazine. Graham Reid of elsewhere.co.nz included it in his best of 2008 list, and North And South reviewer Simon Sweetman described Spring Summer Awesome Winter as “one of my favourites of this year.” In 2010, Bond Street Bridge escaped the New Zealand winter and spent three months touring extensively through Europe and the UK. Along the way he played several shows with Monkey
In 2012 Prebble expanded the Bond Street line-up, recruiting musicians from Auckland’s thriving underground alt-folk scene. Ivy Rossiter (Luckless, Lindon Puffin) joined the band on vocals and percussion, Dylan Storey on lead guitar and Brendan Turner on upright bass. This allowed Bond Street Bridge to move beyond the solo show based on live loops and tape echoes and produce an even more layered and subtle sound featuring rich vocal harmonies, jangling guitars, strings and percussion. The eclectic and powerful live set had Bond Street Bridge invited to open for a wide range of international artists, including The Books, The Willard Grant Conspiracy, Mt Eerie and Don McGlashan. The summer of 2013 saw Bond Street Bridge touring New Zealand with the award-winning show The Explorer’s Club: Antarctica, a multimedia set including spoken-word storytelling and all-original songs dealing with the trials and tribulations of early Antarctic explorers Scott and Shackleton, described by the Dominion Post as “a perfect evening of music.” The show played to sold-out houses at the Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin Fringe Festivals, and was awarded Best Music in the 2013 NZ Fringe Festival Awards. On Sunday 23 November, friends will gather at The Wine Cellar in Auckland to honour and remember Sam and to help raise funds for his family. There will be music from The Eastern, Great North, Bernie Griffen, Steve Abel, The Bads, Reb Fountain, Dylan Storey, Brendan Turner, Hopetoun Brown, Dave Khan, Callum Gentleman, Tom Cunliffe, Scott J Mason, Rodney Fisher and many more. Entry by koha from 5.30pm.
