“Mephistopheles is not your name,” Sting once sung in the Police. Paul Simon, on the other hand, is a difficult little devil that would often torment Art Garfunkel. So finally on stage together, these two very egocentric geniuses will offer a night of quality nostalgia. I can’t wait for mash-up, ‘Message in a Bubble’ with tantric accompaniment.

Since ‘Let Her Go’ broke the charts, acoustic man-folk has rode its horse and cart to the land of pop superstardom. Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger, has six albums of stories from the road, and will be sharing many with fans at the end of the month. You may see him busking – chuck him a fiver.

From the director of Moneyball comes a true story based on Mark Schultz, an Olympic Wrestling champ played by Channing Tatum. In an explosive tour-de-force, Steve Carrell plays his wrestling coach – and life coach – in a relationship that ends up breeding some truly tragic consequences. Forget Carrell in Evan Almighty – this is some disturbing stuff.

The always stellar Reese Witherspoon is back in this rugged self-searcher from the director of Dallas Buyers Club. Witherspoon plays Cheryl Strayed, who decides to take on a mammoth solo hike of, well, 1800kms across America. This role has gained her some heat for the Oscars – so be sure to walk into this one.

Playing someone with Alzheimer’s is always a complex, harrowing task, but Julianne Moore (Hunger Games) manages to touch the role with some humanity and poise. With three grown children and a husband, Moore plays the titular role of Alice, who slowly comes to terms with the crippling disease – and how it affects her family life.

Computer Chess flaunts a retro mockumentary style – it’s made to look like it was shot on some shitty home-camera in the 1980s. With a running theme of man vs. machine that aims to speak about our obsession with technology, the comedy is based around an intense chess tournament with a bunch of strange computer programmers.

BB King has lived the blues as much as he’s played it. The musical odyssey of King is monumental; he’s met (and outplayed) every blues great in town. In a tribute to the city of Memphis, Richard Pearce documents the King and how he came to sit on the throne, with some familiar faces featuring.

Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, Young Frankenstein – if you don’t know these films you need to do some serious research. Brooks is a living legend with over 60 years of showbiz experience, one of only 14 EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). Delving into his rarely aired personal life, Make a Noise is something for the books.

Gia Coppola helms this film based on James Franco’s book Palo Alto: Stories. Centred around Californian teen Teddy and frustrated April, events happen throughout the film that force both to appreciate the fragility of life. Expressing a pure teenage lust and emotion, Palo Alto stars Franco and Emma Roberts in an much celebrated turn.

Before Mel Gibson became, you know, Mel Gibson, he was a rather likable leading man– never more so than in Braveheart, an epic based on Scotland’s 13th century battle for independence. Gibson plays William Wallace, whose family is lost in the fight for freedom. Reaching true transcendence towards the end, Braveheart lingers as a gritty classic.

An action-packed evening on TV2 stars the meatiest, most indecipherable cast ever to grace the Rotten Tomatoes bottom half – the Expendables 2. Nonetheless, this is an absolute cash cow and a coupe for old Sly Stallone. Never taking itself too seriously, this is a blockbuster film full of action, one-liners and throbbing veins on necks.

As a lad, I was told that I needed to watch Goodbye Pork Pie - a sort of rite of passage for young Kiwis. My god, has it aged well. A true-blue Kiwi film with too many homegrown references to catch first time round, Mune , Murphy and the yellow Mini (Pork Pie) always entertain.

Shakespeare invented the words “monumental”, “amazement” and “zany”. So I’ll pay homage to the master and describe this as a zany, monumental night full of amazement. The two plays being performed, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Measure for Measure, both prove how totally swag Willy really was. (He also invented “swagger”.)

WELLINGTON

As a bicultural artist depicting Aotearoa life in a unique way, Robert Ellis is collected in a retrospective of paintings at the Auckland Art Gallery. Engaging with customers with healthy Mexican food, every burrito or bowl purchased equals a meal donated to Stop Hunger Now, which distributes much-needed food in the developing world. It doesn’t stop there – the food is amazing, with bold nachos and quesadillas made by passionate chefs. The initiative is Plate 4 Plate – make sure you do your bit and head to Zambrero; deservedly, this is now a global franchise that should only get bigger with every passing minute.

Swimming pool? Tank. Beach? Tank. Sit down? Tank. You get the reference – but honestly, Tank is fitting for all occasions. With multiple locations around the nation, there is a variety of yummy, healthy and affordable options for the health-nut on the go. Their juices and smoothies are the bomb – particularly the Tank C – and them wraps are a near carb-less taste explosion. You can opt for that extra shot of vitamins at the counter, and their menu clearly lists what drink you’ll need for certain occasions (example: Liver lover on a Sunday morning). WHO RUN THE WORLD? GIRLS. When the 2015 Laneway festival line-up was released late last year there was an audible intake of breath from the collective of regular gig-goers. And as the anticipation has built over the intervening months the biggest worry is who will be playing when – because with so many stellar acts there’s bound to be clashes! And how will we choose? But while we hold our breath waiting for the schedule to be released, there’s no doubt that this year’s line-up features some of the industry’s leading ladies. BANKS

ANGEL OLSEN

The 26-year-old British singer-producer (Tahliah Debrett Barnett) broke through in 2013 with a pair of EPs that were so sleepy and diaphanous they seemed like apparitions, then slammed us with her debut LP last year – without a doubt one of the hottest albums of 2014. With deconstructed fragments of UK grime and garage, not to mention a distinctive R’n’B flavour, Twigs combines elegiac vocals and trunk-thumping beats as she sings of sexuality and separation. Taking risks that few artists are willing to, she dishes out a sumptuous sense of texture and an interesting take on the traditional female roles of seductress and wronged woman. With a sound that’s made up of a delicious jumble of splinters and shards, of stuttering drum machines cutting against arrhythmic glitches and a voice that flits between auto-tuned artifice and raw carnality, you can guarantee Twigs will be a must-see for most at Laneway.

Over the course of five albums, many guest spots and a 2012 collaboration with David Byrne, St. Vincent (Annie Clark) has been focusing her vision and sharpening her music’s edges; if not for Google it’d be easy to forget the days when she wore butterfly wings with Sufjan Stevens and flowing robes with the Polyphonic Spree. Heading back to Auckland for Laneway 2015, there’s no one quite like St. Vincent, with her twisted pop melodies, complex arrangements and cryptic lyrics that see-saw between happiness and madness. And while her eponymous fifth studio album was a huge achievement – full of sumptuous electronics, spectral synthesised choruses, bold, poised and precise – it’s the live arena that she really excels. St. Vincent’s no stranger to touring, so Laneway lads and lasses can expect a tight and eccentric live show, full of neurotic white funk and experimental party rock, as well as jittering choreography and surreal spoken-word interludes.

Since her breakout London EP was released in 2013, BANKS (Jillian Banks) has been on tour with The Weeknd, earned a BBC Sound of 2014 nomination, played Coachella, as well as performing a string of sold-out shows around the globe. While some critics initially pegged her as an easy-to-dismiss major-labelbet, hedged on a pretty face and easily digestible vocal hooks, she’s proved to be much more than that. With a beguiling, diaristic voice and a taste for gloomy, synth-centric productions her 2014 debut LP Goddess was full of heartfelt lyrics and sleek electronic R’n’B sound, all purred over beats from a conveyor belt of hot young producers. Slow-burning, fidgety and attractively troubled, the 14-track album is a colourful array of studio-produced shadings that swirl around her voice. With humming hardware and emotions that swell like storm clouds, you can bet she’ll be bringing the weather to Auckland for her debut Laneway performance.

Angel Olsen’s voice is enchanting, with songs that are powered by a strange, anarchic electricity, always flickering on the edge of blowing out. And by the laws of the unique worlds she creates on her records, thinking is not a passive stance but an active way of being… with unruly emotion a true virtue. Quietly releasing Burn Your Fire For No Witness last year, the album spoke of heartbreak, but with plenty of pleasing anachronism, hard-won resignation and some stern vulnerability. With vocals that can be delicate and ghostly, her songs seem to find a beatific peace in solitude, holding your gaze and never whining or crumbling. And beyond her gorgeous guitar – whether sawdust punk, reverb-laden slow dance or near-silent reverie, Olsen crosses many genres, from sparse, haunting folk to rollicking indie rock. The former backup singer for Bonnie Prince Billy has been known to silence entire rooms, and will be the perfect summer treat for festival-goers this summer.

OFF THE RADAR FESTIVAL 2015

BACK AND BACKED UP BY THE PEOPLE

OFF THE RADAR festival is back for a second edition, and just like last time it’s at the same pristine site just 90 minutes north of Auckland, taking place over Waitangi Weekend. When a black container arrived in the port of Auckland last summer packed with sound systems, electronics and the machinery that would go on to create a fire-breathing lake monster, word got around quickly that there was something going on. Since that first weekend back in 2014 we’ve embraced this crazy German idea, especially when finding out that OFF THE RADAR festival is returning for its second year of festivities on our shores, and the crew behind it have no plans of giving in to the demands of this huge project. The 40-foot container has arrived on site, having completed its journey from Hamburg to Auckland with a trip up the Panama Canal in between. This time they have even more hands to unload it with the support of new crews and renegade collaborators from Germany, Switzerland and New Zealand who have jumped at the chance to be a part of the second installment. This input will be visible during the event when you’re three meters in the air inside the cabin of a 50-foot Dutch sailor or lounging beneath the enormous hull of what was

another great ship. “Last year was all about the Swiss installation artists and their secret lab, about marking the space with the eclectic musical programme and seeing if this mad idea would turn into something that New Zealanders could appreciate” says Golden Thunder – a giant bearded man who looks like he wants to crush you when all he really wants to do is hug you. “Next year is about combining forces with more New Zealand crews, taking the line-up to an even higher level and recreating the site for a more interactive and visual weekend.” It all began at the OFF THE RADAR crew’s mother project Hafenklang club in port side Hamburg, jammed between the morning fish markets, and it is the Hafenklang story that gives such credibility to OFF THE RADAR. Squatted 20 years ago by this group of community-minded people, they spent years fighting the local government to get it on a permanent basis as a nonprofit music venue. Since their fight saw the light in 2000 they have shown Hamburg and the rest of Germany thousands of nights of indie music and dance that Hamburg’s other shinierlooking venues have never had the guts to do.

the idea of breaking even has a nice ring. Instead, they are here to do something cool in a place they love with all of the skills, contacts and gear they have garnered in the last 20 years, while collaborating with different crews from around New Zealand and beyond. End Of The Line events, whose electronic stage is now a permanent fixture on the site, are in the midst of preparations, as are newcomers such as The Janky Mermaid Bass Research Centre and The Greatest Show on Earth. Like last year, the musical line-up will comprise of Indie, hip hop and electronics as well as folk, blues, swing and punk across a series of stages. The line-up is now being leaked out, and the people are finding out hints of what’s in store. Like how graffiti artists from New Zealand and Germany are teaming up to bomb the site into an urban street scene and how visual artists will bring the site alive with installations and custom-created video mapping to light up the night. So yes, this love affair between a group of Germans and a growing number of New Zealanders is blooming again, and it’s only getting stronger. RATKING

BURSTING ON TO the scene with rabble-rousing gusto and a reputation for energetic live shows, Ratking are set to make their debut NZ appearance at Laneway 2015. Essentially a hip hop group – while incorporating elements of early Detroit techno, Cali punk rock, even some London stoner folk – they’re young MCs Wiki (Patrick Morales) and Hak (Hakeem Lewis), as well as producer Sporting Life (Eric Adiele). Ratking are hell-bent on revitalising the reckless spirit of classic New York rap: from the title of their debut long player, So It Goes (2014) – a Kurt Vonnegut reference that doubles as commentary on whether hip hop is dead – to the album’s focus on New York as a muse. It’s impossible to misinterpret Ratking’s stance on the constant conversations running through hip hop culture. Ren Kirk talked to Wiki and Sporting Life about their rich panoramas and wonderfully dystopic musings ahead of Laneway. REN KIRK: Growing up, were there any defining music moments that you still hold on to? Sporting Life: What made me interested was listening to music and how you can just let your imagination go… it’s like, “where are the words of this rap gonna go”? And how music is used in films. Wiki: Yeah, I know I was always interested in music and urban art, and listening to music… and like what Eric was saying. Once you hear music that makes you feel, that impacts you so much… that sort of music just always

makes me wanna do it too. RK: In 2011 you started Ratking, and I just have to ask… where did you get inspiration for the name? W: Umm, well Eric comes from being good with letters and the ones that form the word Ratking are nice – and he’s a cartoon, an American villain. The name also looks good when you write it on paper, and it’s like how we’ve experienced a balance of highs and low while living in New York: as rats and kings; rats that are kings; kings that are rats. RK: You first released an EP in 2012 and then last year’s debut LP So It Goes. What was it like working on a full length record? W: It was dope! And a lot of work... we were working on songs a year before. It’s always dope to get in the studio, and with certain expectations after the EP if felt like it was a good challenge. RK: Sporting Life you produced the album right, and it was engineered by Young Guru – pretty solid New York lineage there. SL: Yeah, and it was lots of fun, kinda building on everything we had and lots of experimenting. Young Guru, he gave it some layers that it didn’t have before, which was really important. RK: The collabs on the album, how did they come about? Especially King Krule, you guys have some history there don’t you? SL: They all happened in diff ways, like Salomon (Faye) is a friend who was

RK: Based in New York and with quite a lot of disparate musical influences, it’s like you guys are from everywhere and nowhere. It shouldn’t really work, but somehow it does. Why? How? SL: Umm, I dunno to be honest. I think we have lots of influences, but also when we play things live, at the end of a certain period in time the influences just mesh in a really good way. And playing more over time it all moulds together. We like using the template of our live show and not just going straight in to the studio with new music. RK: Now that you’ve been around for a few years, what do you think of the music industry? W: We’re not trying to be part of it and we’re not not trying. You do want connections with people though, that are smart and intelligent… you have business to do and shit. But there’s definitely some pretentious shit too. RK: You guys are coming to NZ for Laneway soon, have any of you been before, or heard much about NZ? W: Na, not even to visit so we don’t know anything. Oh, but there was that guy who did that dance, what was it… RK: The haka? W: Yeah the haka, that’s what it was. It was dope, like really cool! RK: What are you most looking forward to about the festival? SL: Performing live, it’s always fun. RK: What do you love about live performance that you can’t get in the studio? W: I mean they’re never gonna be the same, cause there’s always shit that happens and you just couldn’t have recorded it. But in the studio you can get to make it perfect. Both are dope and you gotta be good at both. REN KIRK

Belle & Sebastian Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance Album out now

the main songwriter), is a collaborative effort that maintains the band’s trademark melodic style and searching lyrics but posses a sharper commercial edge that grooves along to great effect. The music is tight, lyrical and effortlessly catchy and speaks of a band that at 20 years of age is still sparkling with new ideas and inspiration.

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN

“We are very happy with the result,” confirms Richard, “and are now faced with the challenge of adapting the studio experience for the live stage.” At this stage the conversation turns to Laneway and Scottish independence.

MY LAST ASSIGNMENT for 2014 was to interview iconic Scottish soft rockers Belle and Sebastian about their new album Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance and their upcoming performance at Laneway 2015, incidentally their first ever NZ performance. Belle and Sebastian formed in 1996 as part of a project for the music course the guys were all taking at Stow College, Glasgow. The resulting album, Tigermilk, was so successful that the band decided to take the concept full-time which Richard explains, “has worked out especially well considering that prior to recording we were mostly strangers to each other and have since all become close friends, staying the course for some 20 years now.” Richard himself, a fourth-generation drummer, had initially rebelled against his families long tradition by setting his sights on a career as a professional snooker player. It didn’t go as planned and he found himself at a loose end and “kind of drifted into the music course.” Centred on the plaintive pop melodies and droll lyrics of songwriter Stuart Murdoch, the band have released eight albums, the last two going top 10 in Britain and last one, Belle and Sebastian Write About Love, peaking at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.

straight away back in 1996 and we have had a loyal following there ever since which is surprising as we have not really paid the attention to that market that we might have.” The new album, number nine and the band’s first in four years, is called Girls in Peacetime want to Dance and is something of a departure for the guys who follow in a tradition of a long line of Scottish acts devoted to a softer kind of pop/rock sound -- Aztec Camera, Orange Juice and The Blue Nile to name but a few. It was recorded, produced and mixed by noted hip-hop producer Ben. H. Allen whose credits include Gnarls Barkley, ‘Crazy’, Boyzone, Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera and a host of others, including noted alternative acts The Whigs and Animal Collective. The band found themselves at Maze Studios in Atlanta Georgia not quite knowing what to expect. “It was,” explained Richard, “a great experience. Ben worked really fast taking bits from here and there, sampling and splicing and quickly put it all together.” “It was an educational experience for us. We were taken out of our comfort zone and as a result learned new ways of approaching our music as well as adding a whole host of new studio skills to our repertoire.”

“The band all voted for Scottish independence,” confirms Richard, “and were deeply disappointed with the no vote. I think the fear-mongers from Westminster undid any chance we had for an independent Scotland, that and all the promises made for a better deal if we stayed with the union. Since the promises were not written down and set in stone, the politicians in London seem to be backtracking and the result has seen a turnaround in attitudes. If we were to have the vote again tomorrow, I think the result would be quite different.” As for Laneway, the audience can expect to hear songs from the new album as well as an extensive exploration of the band’s back catalogue. “It will be a full show with lots of material for the audience to sink their teeth into.” I end the interview by suggesting that Belle and Sebastian, (named after a French children’s book about a boy and his relationship with a wild dog that was later adapted for TV and became very popular with a particular generation of Scottish children), sounds a little like a mash-up of Morrissey and Gerry Rafferty with a dose of Burt Bacharach thrown in for good measure. “I love Gerry Rafferty,” responds Richard, laughing.
