Shit worth announcing

Breaking news  Unknown Mortal Orchestra have announced two shows in December at Wellington’s San Fran Bath House on Fri 16 Oct and Auckland’s Kings Arms on Sat 17 Dec.  Jazz-tress Madeleine Peyroux will play one show next year at the Auckland Town Hall on Tue 06 Mar.  Unsurprisingly, Australia’s Soundwave Festival has a whopping amount of talent heading their way in February/March. Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Limp Bizkit, Hole, System of The Down, Mastodon, Machine Head, Dillinger Escape Plan and Sisters of Mercy are included in the multitude of bands announced.  Ex-Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh was found dead in a Chicago Hotel on Sun 09 Oct (NZ time). Welsh hasn’t been with the band since 2001, but performed on various tracks and was the bassist for The Green Album.  Drab Doo-Riffs, Mothers of Darkness and DJ Tina Turntables have been added to the 95bFM Zombie Prom on Sat 29 Oct.

Our pick

Face the facts: Deerhoof rules. The band that Pitchfork called “the best in the world” is coming back to our shores next year for one show in Auckland and one in Wellington. It’s not their first time playing in New Zealand, and anyone who’s been to a ‘hoof show before can attest that they’re not to be missed out on. January is shaping up to be just what Doctor Summer ordered already. Tickets through Under The Radar, Real Groovy and Cheese On Toast.

All Bizness

If there are two bands that have had critics fawning over them this year, it’s The Weeknd and tUnE-yArDs. No word (yet?) on a Weeknd spectacular coming our way, but CAPS ON/caps off artist Merrill Garbus AKA tUnE-yArDs will play at Auckland’s Kings Arms on Thursday 12 January. Everyone from Adrock (The Beastie Boys) to Thao & Mirah have worked with the new-pop sensation and we’re yet to see her put a foot out of place.

Baths Cancels

Due to health reasons, Baths has had to cancel his one-off upcoming show in Wellington. Citing illness, Will Wiesenfeld said, “So sad about this. I was looking forward to these shows SO much; I’ve never been to Japan or New Zealand... I had to cancel because of some serious stomach issues... I am making my best efforts to recover as fast (and as safely) as possible, and I will see all of you as soon as I can.” Refunds can be obtained from point of purchase.

Ex Fur-Patrol/current Adult Julia Deans will be playing two shows next month. The songstress will hit the Masonic Tavern in Devonport on Saturday 05 November before heading down to The Garden Club in Wellington the following week. Deans was recently nominated in the VNZMAs for Best Female Solo Artist and Best Pop Album for Modern Fables, so here’s your chance to see what all the fuss is about. Tickets from Under The Radar.

Shapeshifter have announced a summer tour upon their return to New Zealand. Currently the drum’n’bass whizzes have been hitting the European summer hotspots and festivals following their signing to dance label Hospital Records. Over the New Years break the band will be gigging in Matakana, Riwaka, Mt Maunganui and Waihi Beach. Keep an ear out for ‘Monarch’, their newest single, set to drop in the coming weeks.

A Capital Idea

Last weekend saw a new record store open up in Wellington. Joining the likes of Slow Boat Records and Rough Peel Music is Evil Genius – a store that has made the move up from Christchurch. Evil Genius opened their Canterbury doors in February just before the quake, and have subsequently decided to make the move to the capital. But it’s bringing some of Southland with it – you can sample the Lyttleton Coffee Company’s goodies in-store. Check out the non-corporate record store at 462 Adelaide Road, Berhampore.

07/12 Get On Up

How great is this – Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears have announced a one-off show in Auckland. The blues revivalists hail from Austin and have a very distinct sound. It’s not blues in a Son House kind of way, but a mix of ‘70s funk with ‘50s pop that has you jivin’ and croonin’ with plenty of skank and swaggery. It’s rock‘n’soul at its best from a band that’s only been on the scene for a couple of years.

09/03 Bringing it back

The first (annual?) RetroFest will be held in March 2012 at Mystery Creek Events Centre just out of Hamilton. From Friday 09 to Sunday 11 March, a celebration of the ‘50s through to the ‘80s will be bringing all things retro to the North Island. 10cc, Hello Sailor, the Village People, Leo Sayer and Gerry and the Pacemakers will all be at next year’s festival. Are you too old to go camping on-site during the festival?

Last week saw the blogosphere go crazy after the news that The Simpsons is facing cancellation. Long story short without going into the complicated finances, it looks like the show is over. Not yet, but it sounds like next year could be the final season. Producer Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Kanye West, of Montreal) will be sitting at the desk for Best Coast’s new album. Recording for the follow up to 2010’s Crazy For You starts in the coming weeks. Bon Iver are about to be more famous than ever. Justin Vernon and crew are gearing up to star in a new ad campaign for Bushmills Irish Whiskey. Also on the roster for the shoot are Theophilus London and Elijah Wood, among others. Singer P!nk will be will be starring alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo and Tim Robbins in the upcoming Thanks For Sharing flick, directed by Stuart Blumberg. It’s not her first foray into acting, but it will be the first time she plays a sex addict named Dede. Jessie J scooped up big at the Mobo awards last week, taking away best song, best British act, best newcomer and best album. Now turn to the person on your left and ask them who Jessie J is. British based gambling agency/bookies Ladbrokes are reporting that Bob Dylan’s chances of winning a Nobel Prize for literature are 5:1. That’s gone up from 100:1 and is the best odds out of anyone nominated. It’s not Dylan’s first rodeo – the icon has been nominated six times before. Following the Pajama Club performance a couple of weeks ago, The Phoenix Foundation will be heading back to the UK this month to perform on Later With Jools Holland. It’ll be a little hard for us to see it here, but do the band proud and check them out online after their set on Tuesday 25 October. Everything’s coming up Gotye. The singer has been under close watch by plenty of distributors around the globe, and word is team Gotye is close to inking a deal. John Watson (Gotye’s manager) told A&R Worldwide, “We’re inches away from closing three licensing deals, which together, would cover the world excluding Japan.” Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch died last week after a long battle with cancer at the age of 67. While the guitarist wasn’t the biggest hit himself, he was praised by the likes of Neil Young, Jimmy Page, Donovan, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Marr, Beth Orton and Devendra Banhart, and plenty more. Wait for a tribute/ re-release album to follow the death of this infamous folk hero. Facebook is moving into the social media/ music scene progressively aggressively. The networking giant presented a series of music partnerships earlier this month with Spotify, SoundCloud, Mixcloud, Deezer, MOG, Rdio, Rhapsody and Vevo on the streaming side and Ticketmaster, StubHub and Eventbrite on the ticketing side. What does it all mean? Facebook owns more now than ever. Everyone loves lists, right? Especially us. So do the folks at Always Sometimes Anytime,

and truth be told, they’re probably better at them than us. We saw an insightful look at top five bromances according to their panel of experts. Yes, bromance is still a term. Head over to alwayssometimesanytime.com and see whether you agree. Rihanna needs to cover herself up. The singer was filming the music video for ‘We Found Love’ on Irish Farmer Alan Graham’s farm when he interrupted the shoot and said that she needed to quit getting her kit off. Where was this dude when Miley Cyrus and Scarlett Johansson were starkers? But the Barbados singer is too much of a rebel. An apparent tell-all interview with Vogue UK saw the popstar drop not her clothes, but the c-bomb a fair few times. Despite all this, we like the mouth she’s got, even if she shouldn’t kiss her mother with it. Rod Stewart says that Rod Stewart’s book about Rod Stewart will address Rod Stewart’s womanising ways. Really? The geriatric, who’s been married three times and banged out eight kids, likes the ladies? He uses his wealth, power and fame to get chicks? What, is he a sex addict too? Queue shock followed by horror. Kylie Minogue is set to receive an honorary degree from Anglia Ruskin University in acknowledgement of her work for raising breast cancer awareness. The Aussie icon was diagnosed with the big C back in 2005, but after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy treatment was given the all-clear the following year. Queen took away the Icon award at the BMI Awards last week in recognition of the bands airplay success in the States. Drummer Roger Taylor said, “Though we were kind of married to America for a long time we never really were very much in terms of awards. We’re not bursting with Grammys, so it’s nice to have that tribute from our peers.” Whatever happened to System Of A Down? It’s been years since their last release right? Right. Well SOAD drummer John Dolmayan said that another album will happen, but not for at least another year. So the good comes with the bad there. What’s with the holdup? It’s simple – lead singer Serj Tankian is living in New Zealand and has his own thing going on. Good with the bad.

Geekasm: The first official trailer for The Avengers should hit the web Tuesday 11 October, just after we go to print. The release isn’t set until early May next year, but just the tiniest tidbits (raw footage, images, interviews, storyboards, etc) of information have been released day by day – although we’ve been avoiding most of the spoilers. And on that subject of geekology, how’s this for a dream team – Iron Man director Jon Favreau, Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci, Robot Chicken co-creator Seth Green and Superman Returns co-writer Michael Dougherty are all teaming up for a sci-fi drama on ABC. The team will write the project titled Ex-Comm, which is described as a cross between the paranormal suspense of The X-Files and the political intrigue of The West Wing. The Coen brothers look to be turning their heads to television. The project is called HarveKarbo, and will be an hour-long singlecamera comedy for Fox that Joel and Ethan will be working on with Brian Grazer and Phil Johnston. Spanish romantic dreamhunk / villain extraordinaire Javier Bardem is set to voice a villain the Despicable Me 2. Thursday 13

WEDNESDAY 12 Def Leppard & Heart

Tabloid

Vector Arena

General Release

6.30pm, $70-130, ticketmaster.co.nz

Def Leppard is everything great about big ‘80s rock. The hair, the clothes, the sound, the onearmed percussion – everything. And with Heart backing up as support, this gig takes you down to camp-nostalgia town. It’s nearly sold out, so if you haven’t got a ticket yet and you picked up this copy before Thursday, there’s still time.

If looks could kill, right? Tabloid was a huge hit at this year’s Film Festival for good reason. The tale of a former Miss Wyoming who was accused of kidnapping a young Morman missionary and forcing him into having his way (or her way?) with her is one that, unsurprisingly, entertains in the most shocking way.

NZ Improv Festival

Three Musketeers

Bats Theatre

General Release

$13-17, book@bats.co.nz or (04)8024175

Period films are never going to go away. Especially ones with great big sets and costumes that always get nominated for an Academy Award (one of the ones you don’t really care about). It’s no surprise that Orlando Bloom is in this action/romance blockbuster with swords – think of it as Pirates of the Caribbean in an alternate universe. With Frenchmen.

Sometimes when you’re at a comedy show all you want to do is shout at the comedians. Most of the time that’s because you’re a dick and you like interrupting people are trying to entertain you. But at improv showcases you actually can shout out your ideas and they listen instead of everyone booing you.

Dudley Benson hasn’t done much for a while, but this week he plays at the Nelson Arts Festival. Two tenors, a baritone and a beatboxer are part of his support act The Dawn Chorus, who play with Benson this Wednesday and Thursday.

Auckland’s Shotgun Alley kick off their album release tour this week, and the band start big with their show at Auckland’s Vector Arena before heading to Rotorua on Thursday, Tauranga on Friday and Napier on Saturday.

9pm, $5 from 1-night. co.nz, $10 on door

The search for the country’s best partyrocker DJ is in the San Fran Bath House tonight. NDA, DDog, DJ Spell, SJ Shan, Mikki Dee, Kev Fresh, Titts Magee and Buck-A-Pop just have a good time.

8.30pm, $26-42, everyman.co.nz

It’s as over as quick as it began. The team-up of Mike Fabulous and Lawrence Arabia has impressed critics and fans alike for good reason. This Thursday the duo hit the Nelson Arts Festival with their touring band. It will be fabulous/marvellous.

Friday 14 York St Studios Band Experiments

Disasteradio

Flow

The Archive

9pm, $10 on door

It’s the York St Studios Band Experiment 2011 Grand Final this weekend, and it’s kind of a big deal. Previous winners have gone on to be somewhat of the go-to musos in the Waikato scene. This year’s winner gets recording time, a music video, a distribution deal, a photoshoot and O-Week gigs.

Electric Salon IV

Bachelorette

The Lucha Lounge

San Fran Bath House

9pm, $10 on door

So basically, this is going to be the most fun thing to do in Newmarket tonight. Lashes, Vostok Lake, Horatio Crane and Smoked Salmon Is Better Than Sex play music. Miss Phloss and Dolly Destory make burlesque. Kama sutra acrobatics makes you intrigued. And Tim Batt and Anthony Watson make funnies. Electric Salon, simply put, owns.

Sometimes all you want to do is dance like you just don’t give a shit. Not in a way like you’re chewing your lips off but also hiding that gum that you bought at 1:00am from the all-night dairy, trying to be inconspicuous. No, sometimes you just want to dance to Disasteradio and do aerobics.

9pm, $22, undertheradar.co.nz

It’s hard to look for information about Bachelorette on the internet without coming across some bullshit American reality television show. Actually it’s easy; you just refine your search. But still. That show sucked. This one won’t though, because our Bachelorette isn’t a prissy little girl-next-door judgemental bitch. She’s actually really cool.

When DJs get all meta and self-referential with injokes, they have silly names like Marc “Where’s the beers? “ Moore, Seth “Pump up the jam” Josephs, Tommy “In the mix” Bates, Connor “Nothing but hits” Nestor and Steven “You can’t just play hits” Dunstan. But they’re fun, so you’d assume that the gig would be too.

Black Dice only had one show last week before calling it on the whole New Zealand tour thing. But Eric Copeland is basically Black Dice anyway. The noise aficionado is banging out four quick stops this week thanks to the Audio Foundation, and arrives in Christchurch this Friday after his solo shows in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.

gig OF THE WEEK 9pm, $10, undertheradar.co.nz

Nocturnal Collections is presenting ‘The Best Tour This Country Has Seen Since Kiwi Fire’ with god bows to math, High Society and Lost Rockets. This trio of semiunderground, semi-popular and all-round goodness are hitting the road for the first time as a threesome, and will show Wellington a good time.

Tommy Ill and his crew are touring. His crew is probably more of an entourage. They probably tell each other that one of them is Turtle, and then laugh at the one who is obviously Turtle. It’s a given that Tommy would be Vincent. This little mini tour is celebrating the release of his new single ‘Birdbath’.

There was a time when everyone was into Minuit. Then some people stopped taking party pills and they said that they stopped liking Minuit. Except plenty of people still liked them, which is why Minuit are still going strong. So don’t blame it on the party pills. It was you who erred. You and your party pills.

A mobile sex shop. Sex on the go. Well, sex toys on the go. Or maybe it is a brothel on the go; we won’t spoil it for you. But all in all, yeah – this play is about rolling probable cause. Some lucky ladies win the lottery and open up the deals for heels on wheels, Sex Drive.

10pm, $15-20, iticket.co.nz

Man, Basementfest.2011 just keeps banging out good little shindigs day after day. This weekend is no different with the Regrooved Block Party. Slynk, Audited Beats, Kolab, Fretless, King Kapisi, Randomplay, Funk Ferret, Adam O, Coolhand Luke, Karn Hall and more all take to the stage (is it a stage when it’s a block party?) for this big night.

There has only ever been one man expelled from the All Blacks. We’re not sure if that’s a small or large amount of expelled persons. What happened was Keith Murdoch scored a winning try in the ‘70s against Wales and then punched a security guard after the match. Then he disappeared into the Aussie outback. This guy was always going to be a legend..

Pouring it on Def Leppard’s Joe elliot tells it like it is to Jan MaRee

I’m speaking to Joe Elliot from his hotel in Ireland. It’s just gone 10pm there and though he has a huge line up of interviews ahead of him, he tells me I am number two for the night, so he is “still fresh”. Immediately, I feel that this is a man I’d love to have a yarn with over a few beers. But the operator insists that we have ten minutes together, so I figure I best make each one of them count. Thirty-one years together, most of which have been spent on the road, Def Leppard is by Elliot’s admission a touring band. This current tour, which includes a stop to our fair shores, started back in June. The highlight for him is getting back to places (like New Zealand) that the band seldom get to visit. “The last time we were down your way we played with Cheap Trick and it [Vector Arena] was full to the rafters,” recalls Elliot. “Moments like that, they keep you wanting to come back. It’s like throwing logs on the fire, we are the fire and the audience keep throwing those logs on and we burn stronger.” Burn indeed; Kerrang magazine’s recognition of Def Leppard’s live show as one of the 100 greatest gigs of all time begs the question: what is Elliot’s? “There is no one gig,” he says. “Various in thirty years stand out. There are treasured moments.” He reels off a number of highs: Live Aid 2005, which saw the band play to an audience of one million; the band’s hometown, Sheffield, in 1993 to a crowd in excess of 50,000; and their first US show in San Diego, 1983. His tone changes slightly as he then recalls, “San Sebastian, Spain. Eight hundred people throwing coins at us – I was hit in the face. I nearly lost my sight. Clearly not fans of ours. So you know, there’ve been good and bad gigs that will stay with me always.” The band’s newest offering Mirrorball is essentially a live compilation album, plus three new tracks and a bonus DVD. When asked what New Zealand fans can expect at the upcoming show, Elliot is adamant, Def Leppard will always play the hits. “In the ‘80s we played in Ireland with The Waterboys, and I remember Mike Scott telling me they weren’t going to play ‘The Whole of the

Moon’, and to me that is just cutting your nose off to spite your face,” he explains. “You gotta play your hits man, even though they are like naughty children in the rehearsal room, once you get on stage they become like an extension of yourself and vice versa, and there’s nothing wrong with that.” Onwards, as the precious minutes tick by, I ask what the future sound of rock is. To Joe, in this disposable era, rock music’s future is uncertain. He errs on the side of caution. “I can’t answer that question, by the time your piece goes to print, what I have said will no longer be relevant.” So what, then, is he listening to? “You won’t believe me,” he laughs, “but Glen Campbell’s Ghost on Canvas. It is a magnificent piece of work. It really is great.” The operator comes on the line to tell us we have one minute remaining, so I ask my final question: What is your advice to aspiring rockers? “Follow your heart, not your head. Do what you can, don’t wait for the right time, just get it out there, man.” And with that we say goodbye. In ten minutes I feel like I know more about Joe Elliot than some of my closest friends. If this is only a small indication of what it will be like to share a concert with him, then I can only hope that as you read this, your ticket is in your other hand.

Single No LonGer? It ’s the last sOLO ride for Bachelorette

Mixed deep beneath the whirring percussion, bleeps, bloops and other mechanical musicality is the soul of one Annabel Alpers. It’s a soul that’s grown and swelled since the release of The End Of Things six years ago. Back then, she threw aside the conventions of former bands grounded in traditional means (Hawaii Five-O, amongst others) and delved straight in to a workshop to create a singing, laptop-toting alterego for herself – and Bachelorette was born. Since then, she’s released her debut full-length Isolation Loops, where her talent for creating a human heart from the remnants of machines was properly solidified, but it was the 2009 release of My Electric Family that set in stone her ability to fashion brilliantly unconventional and entirely leftfield pop songs. Her aesthetic and sound is grounded firmly in the technological. Futuristic themes and space-age synthesizers makes for terribly kitschy listening in the hands of the unskilled, but thankfully Alpers injects her own brand of sparseness and solitude that might otherwise fall prey to camp posturing. From a shack on the Canterbury shore to the heights of Brooklyn, Alpers has worked in some bizarre locales in her time, but it’s what comes from plains of her imagination that forms her kooky charm. “I think it just takes me a while to find the right environment where I can focus on recording,” says Alpers. “I get too easily distracted if I’m in the wrong place. I don’t know that the surroundings influence the music a whole lot, other than being more or less conducive to writing and recording... [the] process always changes for each album, but not in a way that I’m conscious of at the start. “The last record was a much more solitary recording experience than the previous one. I got pretty sick of doing everything on my own though, so I’m wanting to change tack musically and be more collaborative from now on.” The notoriety has brought on tours with the likes of tribal-pop goons Animal Collective, charmed crooners Beach House, and gaunt alt-stars Deerhunter. It’s become Alpers’ bread and butter over the years.

“Definitely touring is the best form of promotion for music,” she comments. “I know that most labels wouldn’t be interested in signing a band that didn’t tour. And now that hardly anyone buys music anymore, playing live is one of the only ways to make a living as a musician... I really love touring as a support act because I get to play in amazing theatres that I wouldn’t have a hope of playing in as a headliner, and every time you play your music gets introduced to a new audience.” Alpers has just recently completed a tour of the West Coast of the United States with slowcore pioneers Low, and now returns to New Zealand shores to complete what will be her final tour as Bachelorette. But she isn’t leaving with an empty bag. Her self-titled record, released in May of this year, has gone on to achieve critical success, with leading single ‘Blanket’ being nominated for a coveted Silver Scroll award, and strange as it may sound, My Electric Family cuts ‘Her Rotating Head’ and the desolate ‘Long Time Gone’ were both featured on uber-soppy American show Grey’s Anatomy. So as Bachelorette is put to sleep, the motors wind down and the power cuts to flashing lights, with an impressive canon of work to be engraved on a headstone, we should be sure that Annabel Alpers will soon be stepping out in a new outfit and with a new creation in tow.

RUGBY SHIT

RUGBY GUIDE Wed 12 Queens Wharf

Live at The Cloud - Comedy at The Cloud: 8:30pm: Free

The Nation’s Clubrooms (AKL)

Safety First

Queens Wharf

So there’s been a bit of talk about getting to and from Eden Park lately. Since the very beginning of the Rugby World Cup, really. GaDgets Up In The iClouds

Apple’s iCloud launches this week on Thursday. Another addition to the iFamily, the automatically syncing iCloud wirelessly stores all of your content (music, photos, apps, contacts, calendars, documents, etc) and keeps it all up to date across all of your iMedia. There’s also the iTunes Match,

which scans your music library and matches them to other songs. This is meant to help find higher quality versions of the songs (among a million other iHelpful things), but it seems a bit more of a gimmick than anything truly useful. All in all it looks like the iCloud is the newest and best in syncing technology, which, if you live your iLife needing everything iRelated, will be a helpful software program. But otherwise it could just be a case of something that only real techies are after, not something that will truly help your day-today living otherwise.

1955-2011

Romance. It’s not just about relationships with the missus or the fella. It’s about finding a piece of beauty where you wouldn’t otherwise. On Thursday 05 October around 1pm our time, the news hit the twittersphere that Steve Jobs had died. It was mentioned first on the GG twitter feed by 95bFM, who were the first of the people we follow to get to it out. We found out that the man who has literally changed the face of social interaction had passed away. And we found it out via an avenue that wouldn’t be successful without said man and his futurist vision. Who knows what will be Jobs’ claim to fame once all’s said and done. Getting Apple out of its slump? His work with Pixar? The iPod? The iPhone? The iPad? The iMac? There’s simply too much ingenuity that this man had a part in to be able to put him and his legacy in a box. But we do know that without him and his team’s ideas, technology and social media wouldn’t be what they are today. We wouldn’t be in contact without being in contact. We

wouldn’t be able to see our friends and families in other countries around the world. We wouldn’t be able to do all of this from the palm of our hand or in the comfort of our lap. Steve Jobs did not create all of the software or technology that we posses today, but his mind and influence played more than simply a part in it. His ideas and his vision was the trigger that made people think “Why not?” Without Steve Jobs, odds are the populace wouldn’t utilise digital software and social media the way they do now. People wouldn’t always be logged on. People wouldn’t know what they know while still on the go. Consumption in its digital sense would be somewhere else, and there’s no way of knowing where. Thursday saw Steve Jobs’ legacy being spelled out post by post, tweet by tweet, status by status. It wasn’t ironic. It wasn’t meta. It wasn’t simple coincidence and it’s not complicated overanalysing. It was romance. Finding a piece of beauty where you wouldn’t otherwise.

Go On A Siri Cruise

The new iPhone, version 4S to be precise, has a dandy new piece of software that is as much of the future as self-lacing shoes are. There’s a better camera, faster processor, better screen... everything that usually gets upgraded for every new version of anything. But what’s really grabbed our attention is a little internal gizmo called Siri. We all know that voiceactivation control is around. You can tell your iPhone who to call, and it will. But Siri is something else. You can tell her to read out your texts while you’re driving

and tell her what to text back. You can tell her to rearrange your meeting with that bigwig to 2pm instead of 1pm, only for her to tell you that you’ve already got another meeting booked at that time. You can tell her to remind you when you get home that you need to cook dinner for the Jamesons who are coming around at 7:30 and that Mrs Jameson has recently become a vegetarian so no meat dishes. Then you can ask her what vegetarian restaurants are around in case you want to go out with the Jamesons instead of having a home cooked meal. Or maybe Siri can find you a good vegetarian dish. No doubt there will be bugs and Siri won’t be perfected just yet. But at the heart of it, this is the next step of device technology – telling the device everything that you want it to do. What comes after that? Voice manipulation instead of recognition?

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

llll

Having discarded the throatsinging and beat-boxing of Medulla and 2007’s Volta, which sounded like playtime at the Frigidaire factory, this time we get the results of sipping too much sake whilst noodling on the iPad. Beginning with the oriental, fragile chiming of a custom-built gameleste (‘Moon’) Bjork builds up her cache of arid twinklings, peppering them with her own brand of lyrical mythology. She surprises with computer generated pipe organs, multi-track harmonies, delicate tinkles (‘Virus’) and harp (‘Solstice’). The processional ‘Cosmogony’

At this point in Pearl Jam’s astonishing career, it’s clear they’re doing it for the fans more than ever. To mark their 20 year anniversary, they’ve released a comprehensive documentary named PJ20, with its double disc soundtrack presenting a live account of their diverse, gritty history. It opens with five songs from 1991’s Ten – ‘Release’ is all the more impressive given Vedder’s 2006 performance. ‘Blood’ from Vs. is violent, ugly and urgent whilst the one, two Vitalogy punch of ‘Last Exit’ and ‘Not For You’ reminds you why Pearl Jam were so incredibly essential to rock music in 1995. The second disc compiles playful demos and instrumentals, and concludes with poignant versions of ‘Betterman’ and ‘Rearviewmirror’ that will leave you reminiscent and teary. The included booklet with dates and summaries of each song is an added bonus. A great retrospective for the true Pearl Jam admirer. Hail Hail.

When San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips played Auckland’s Whammy Bar last year they celebrated the occasion with a romp through Snapper’s underground NZ classic ‘Buddy’. It’s a good reference point – along with more recent psychedelic stalwarts The Black Angels – and if you like your tunes to find a groove and stay locked in there indefinitely, then these guys are for you. There’s no messing around with anything as trivial as verses, choruses, or bridges (apart from the Golden Gate on the cover); it’s more about driving rhythms and buried vocals. Occasionally it devolves into a bit of a dirge, as on the monotonous ‘Rising’, and some of the bass playing makes Kim Deal look like an adventurous show off by comparison, but generally the insistent beats and occasional guitar flourishes from Ripley Johnson (recently moonlighting as one half of Moon Duo) mix it all up just enough to keep the listener drone-rocking along.

The one-of-a-kind Alice Cooper returns with his staggering 26th album, a sequel of sorts to his 1975 classic Welcome To My Nightmare. Alice does little to stretch beyond his ghoulish rock hero persona because when he does the results are a mixed bag. ‘What Baby Wants’ leans heavily on trashy pop schmaltz and features (of all people) Ke$ha on vocals. A song like ‘Last Man On Earth’ reminds us of Cooper’s roots in vaudeville performance art. When Alice does what Alice does best he is hard to beat. ‘I’ll Bite Your Face Off’ does just that and ‘Ghouls Gone Wild’ is the sort of sleazy go-go rock that inspired the Rob Zombies of the world in the ‘80s. If nothing else, Welcome 2 My Nightmare is an excuse to get Cooper out on the road and for that we should all be deeply grateful.

They’ve come many a mile since the alt-indie of New and Tu-Plang, or the very clever…Art. But sadly, they seem to have strayed into the musical parody music of Weird Al and Ween. One can’t help but think these guys are way too old for this kind of school boy golly-gee, in the form of stumbling and clumsy lyrical low brow toilet humour. Regurgitator succeed when in the new wave mode (‘Punk Mum’, ‘Be Still My Noisy Mind’). Alas, they tank with the Nu-Punk (‘No Show’, ‘Uncontactable’) and tragic-glam rock (‘Into The Night’ and ‘Outer Space’). ‘All Fake Everything’ begins pathetically with a satirical Elton/Lennon rip off before suddenly breaking out into contrived hip hop, but it can’t touch the Conchords’ ‘Hiphopopotomous vs. Rhymenocerous’ as a decent piss take of the genre. Worse, ‘One Day’ is a band trying to parody themselves, but mere casting shadows of former greatness. An album of undercooked potential from former innovators of edgy indie rock. uses pitch-shifting brass to meld science to nature. Yet for an album made by silicone and plastic, it sounds beautifully warm and convincingly human. When the beats finally break through on ‘Mutual Core’, they’re augmented by cathedral organs and soaring vocals, leaving you in welcome breathlessness. Again, Bjork proves utterly remarkable and unique.

Battlefield 3

EA have teamed up with DICE to release the latest installment in the Battlefield franchise. Executive Producer Patrick Bach is adamant, however, that instead of being just an iteration of previous games, this will be a “big step forward”. The premise is that it’s 2014, and you’re a crack US Marine unit and take control of Sergeant Henry Blackburn. Throughout the game you’ll be able to take control of multitudes of vehicles, gradually introduced so as to not overwhelm you. Bach says that they’ve paced the game as a tutorial, “so when you

go into the multiplayer you don’t feel scared.” Traditionally online multiplayer has been the strength of the franchise, and I’m sure that this latest edition won’t disappoint. B3 is using their new an in-house developed engine Frostbite 2, which basically means advanced graphical effects, destructible terrain, dynamic audio effects and lifelike character animations. DICE make use of EA’s ANT technology to blend in game animations from one to another at any time without glitches (such as FIFA12). If the trailers are anything to go by, it all adds to up to a beautiful looking game. Battlefield 3 hits stores on Thursday 27 October, and if you want to view some of the trailers and get a feel for what’s on offer, then head to www. battlefield.com.

AustrAliA’s most infAmous crime story

Of The Same Creed Assassin’s Creed Revelations

This is the next installment in one of the most successful next-generation franchise games. ACR sees us return to take control of master assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, as we follow in the footsteps of his mentor Altair to Constantinople during the rise of the Ottoman Empire. The enemies once more are the Templars, although Altair is said to have hidden an ancient artifact that is a powerful weapon that could end the war between the assassins and the Templars forever. Alongside this, the game also follows on Desmond’s story from Brotherhood as he attempts to reintegrate his splintered subconscious. Ubisoft are certainly doing all that they can to tease us with

trailers. A new addition is the hookblade, which can be used for combo attacks, zip lining across the city and aiding your climbing ability. This is touted as speeding up navigation of the maps by 30%. Ezio also has developed a new penchant for bomb making, and is now able to craft up to 300 different types of bomb to assist in his quests. It appears therefore that the single player function is going to build on what we already know and love. The biggest change apparently will be online. The multi-player function offers something different from your run-in-with-guns-blazing Call of Duty experience. Wanted mode returns but has been added to with Deathmatch and Artifact Assault (capture the flag). Players can level up and stealth is paramount. I for one cannot wait to get hands on with this game, and if you get in early on PS3, they’re throwing in the original game for free.

I’m a big fan of Anna Faris. From the Scary Movies to Yogi Bear and The House Bunny she’s enlivened even the most moribund of comedies. She’s Katherine Heigl with a personality, Kate Hudson with better comic timing, a taller, less southern Reese Witherspoon and Matthew McConaughey in a dress. But even Faris, saddled with a script that makes her character both ditzy and cynical, can’t save this lame duck Bridesmaids-meets-Ghosts-ofGirlfriends-Past hybrid.

The CGI depicting the wide variety of nicely-designed robots is more or less flawless, and the film sparks to life whenever they’re on screen. The character development and emotional conflict, however, is stock-standard. Jackman is competent but kind of sterile in the lead role, bringing little personality to the film. If Steven Spielberg’s name didn’t pop up in the opening credits of Real Steel as executive producer, it wouldn’t be too hard to discern his involvement. The entertainment titan’s trademark absenteefather themes are at the core of the film and watching them play out yet again can be exhausting. But this movie is aimed at kids (more so than I had anticipated) and it’s hard to imagine them not having a grand ol’ time, especially during the plentiful scenes of bonding between Hugh Jackman’s character’s

grooveguide.co.nz

A mix of Sleepless in Seattleesque statistics-based comedy with the magazine-inspired antics of How to Lose a Man in Ten Days, What’s Your Number is overlong and unoriginal. All the modern ‘raunchy’ romcom boxes are ticked – kids swearing, google searching, weird handcrafts, uncool music appreciation (here it’s Lionel Ritchie) and oldies excelling at social media, while the obligatory flashbacks come in the form of trawling through Ally’s bed-friend back catalogue. The soundtrack is cloying, the leading men are a comic book action star and a clip show host rather than, you know, funny people, and the horribly choppy editing strains continuity and the audience’s interest to breaking point. Polynesia finally gets its moment in the sun with this family drama set in an isolated Samoan village. The Orator provides a cinematic window into contemporary life on the island as well as an overview of more traditional aspects of Samoan culture. The film is a co-production with New Zealand, and some of our most highly respected technicians make strong contributions. Cinematographer Leon Narbey and sound designer Tim Prebble combine to create a setting rich with lush,

an appeal for the film’s target audience. A story thread which sees him hip-hop dancing with Atom before every fight pushes the film in a peculiar song-anddance direction, but it’s an undeniably unique sight. Aside from this, Real Steel is probably a little too generic (and long) to win over a grown up audience rendered blasé about movie robots by the Transformers movies, but kids should respond well to its finely calibrated wish-fulfilment story. WRITTEN BY DOMINIC CORRY, flicks.co.nz

natural colour and atmospheric touches on the soundtrack. The result is an authentic world with a mythical quality that seems in tune with the palpable emotional content of the story. This is a movie that’s more concerned with the importance of the characters’ intimate moments than it is with a fast moving plot. Populating the cast is a predominantly untrained collection of locals. Their low key performances fit the mood and universal themes of the film, while a few moments of well-executed comic relief are on hand when things need livening up. Rookie writer/ director Tusi Tamasese juggles these technical elements well but it’s the obvious empathy for his characters that is the most pleasing hallmark of his feature length debut. The Orator won’t be for everyone, as it unfolds at a pace some may find catatonically slow and lacks any eye-catching flash. However, it’s an undoubtedly sincere statement about a unique corner of the world. WRITTEN BY ANDREAS HEINEMANN, flicks.co.nz

Shit Worth Watching

ON SCREEN Four Goodness Sake TV

Thank God for Tina Fey. She’s a comedy icon and one whose sole presence has made it easier (it seems) for men to accept that, believe it or not, women can actually be funny. There’s so much right about 30 Rock. So it’s good to see that 8pm Monday sees the return of the series to FOUR. Season five premieres with Liz Lemon getting her love on with tentative new boyfriend, dreamboat and sky-hunk Carol, played by Matt Damon. If you remember the end of season four you’ll know that everyone’s

favourite hick was fired from the NBC offices. So yes, we get to see what has become of the possibly immortal Kenneth (Jack McBrayer). Season five really shows growth and development in terms of the series – something that was explored a bit more in the fourth season but is expanded a bit more here. It’s a common thing to say about any latest episodes, but it seems like the writers and actors nailed the show with season five. But the comedy news gets even better with FOUR’s

returning programming. Parks & Recreation makes its return at 9pm on Monday. With one of the greatest newcomer comedian casts around when it comes to primetime viewing (Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Rashida Jones, Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Adam Scott, etc), there was no way that this show was ever going to be a flop. With these shows following slotting in on a Monday alongside How I Met Your Mother, Monday has become a standout for FOUR’s comedy delivering. Rules Of Engagement wasn’t anything special, but anything with Patrick Warburton (AKA one of the world’s greatest voice artists) in it is worth a watch. But if good comedy doesn’t make you laugh because you’re some kind of dim-witted idiot, you can always watch something hilarious in another

way like Sabrina Goes To Rome on Saturday at 6:30pm on FOUR. And yes, it’s Melissa Joan Heart. You know it. FOUR takes away the gold for comedy this week. FOUR’s Monday is the new TV2’s Wednesday.
