Clear As Glass

 Hollie Smith will be playing two shows in November with support from Grand Rapids, The Nok and more. Thu 17 Nov sees the gang play in Auckland followed by a show in Wellington on Fri 18 Nov.  Luckless and Bond Street Bridge will be touring throughout November through to December. The two bands will play Auckland through to Picton in the upcoming 12-stop tour.

Where to start with Zach Condon? He brings new meaning to melody. He’s made world music his own. He is one of the only people around who can successfully use a brass section without being ripped to shit for it. Some people hate him for being too similar to Bright Eyes, and some people love him for taking the next step. Whether you agree with calls like this or not, it’s hard to deny that Beirut prove themselves time and time again. The band will be playing two shows in Auckland and Wellington in January.

Wellington’s Glass Vaults have announced the release of a new EP later this month following up their effort last year, Glass. Into Clear will be released through JUKBOXR later this month, and the band is celebrating with two shows this weekend. Auckland hosts the band at St Kevin’s Arcade on Friday with Seth Frightening and Dear Times Waste holding the support reigns, followed by the increasingly popular Space Monster in Wanganui on Saturday with help from Seth Frightening once more and Castlecliff Lights.

Multi-platinum pop sensation Jason Derulo will be coming to New Zealand this week for a meet and greet and in-store signing at JB-Hi Fi’s Queen Street store in Auckland. The star will be launching his latest album Future History, so if you’re a fan and want a sweet Jason Derulo autograph on your copy, here’s your chance. The 22-year-old reached number three on the NZ singles chart as he follows up his self-titled debut. The singer will be at the store from midday this Friday.

Unknown Home For Christmas

Critics around the world have been praising everything we’ve heard so far from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The boys are heading home from their current residence in Portland, Oregon where they fit right in with the noise-pop scene. The trio will play two shows in mid-December; one at Wellington’s San Fran Bath House and the second at Auckland’s Kings Arms. It’s not every day you get to see them, so get your tickets now before they sell out (which we’re guessing they will).

Sisters Of Mercy have also signed up, covering for their bail earlier this year. Soundwave moves around Australia from late February to early March in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The final acts for the month-long celebration of Flying Nun’s 30th anniversary have been locked in. Shayne Carter will be taking his Last Train To Brockville show down to Christchurch and Dunedin with support from Ghost Club; The Subliminals reform to head on the road with The Clean; Fetus Productions and X Features join the party for one special show joined by The Verlaines, Solid Gold Hell and The Puddle; Flying Nun’s latest signing Badd Energy will play the New Nun Night in Auckland and Wellington alongside Popstrangers, Grayson Gilmour, T54 and Surf Friends; and finally a series of Flying Nun tribute nights presented by A Low Hum have been added to the month of celebrations including performances from The Phoenix Foundation, She’s So Rad, Delaney Davidson, Golden Axe, Idiot Prayer, O’Lovely, The Eversons and many more.

07/03 The Chosen Flock

And speaking of Soundwave, the first of the flow-over from the festival has started already. Metal icons Lamb of God will be heading to New Zealand for one show in Auckland in March next year. It’s not the band’s first time to the country in their 15 years of long-serving entertainment, but those who’ve seen them before know they’re a sight not to be missed. Auckland’s Studio plays host with support from The Black Dahlia Murder and Unearth.

Occupying the streets is happening in a lot of places, and in New York, the Occupy Wall Street protest has seen several big musical acts who have rallied behind the folks on the street. Curated by Oliver Driver, the basic idea is “New Zealand Film and Television is taking the world by storm, we are selling formats, exporting television shows and producing some of the largest and most successful films in the world. However are we doing enough? Is Hollywood exploiting us? Can we hold our own on the world stage?” The discussion will be free to and attend. It’s official – Radiohead will be returning to the studio to do some recording this year. In our weekly Thom Yorke news, the singer told Rolling Stone, “We can get things together quite rapidly at the moment... It would be fun to have them ready when we go to play next year. I don’t know how we would release them. It would be nice to make it all part of the flow and just enjoy it – not think about it too much.” TVNZ 7’s Back Benches is heading up to Auckland for one show next month. Hosted by Wallace Chapman and Damian Christie, the free live pub politics show will look at the Auckland Central candidates at the Britomart Country Club on Wednesday 02 November and starts at 9pm. Film news A new Bret Easton Ellis film is in the works. The author, whose most famous novel-to-film adaptation would have to be American Psycho, has said that director Roger Avary will be at the helm. Avary has worked with Ellis previously on The Rules Of Attraction and Glitterati, and the duo’s next collaboration will be Glamorama. World War Z has been in production thanks to (and starring) Brad Pitt. The film has had a couple of hiccups along the way; usual stuff like going over budget, running behind schedule, etc. However, the latest kerfuffle was a real life SWAT team interrupting the shoot due to the realistic appearance of prop firearms. Zombies versus SWAT? That’s basically the plot of the book being adapted anyway. Stupidly, the cameras weren’t left rolling. An American Reunion trailer is online. Yeah, THAT American franchise still isn’t done. Have a look for it online and try not to be surprised when you still see Jason Biggs jerking off after all these years. The title for the fifth instalment of Die Hard has been announced – A Good Day to Die Hard. Bruce Willis’ latest dying dilemma will involve Russians and the character’s son getting in a kind of trouble that isn’t actually what it seems. The film starts shooting in January next year and will be released in February 2013. Ah McClane, you’ve done it again.

ColdPLAY TRACK BY TRACK Coldplay frontman chris martin talks us through the band’s newest album mylo xyloto

‘Mylo Xyloto’ (pronounced My-low Zy-lotoe): It means whatever you want it to mean. [To me] it means a freedom of expression and you can think up new words if you want to. There are still things that you can invent and words beginning with X are few and far between, so we thought we might try and add one. ‘Hurts like Heaven’: That’s the opening track, really. That’s kind of our call to arms. I think it’s sort of like, um... calisthenics, musically for us. It warms you up. ‘Paradise’: If we ever won the X Factor that’s the song we might sing. We never will, of course, but that’s what we would do it. I think if truth be told, we’re not really handsome enough to go on it. ‘Charlie Brown’: The only song we ever wrote in a doll’s house. I was staying in a place with a Wendy House and I turned it into a studio ‘cause my daughter didn’t like it. And I came back from a Bruce Springsteen show in Los Angeles and I was like “okay — let’s see if anything came out of that day.” ‘Us Against The World’: The whole thing is supposed to be a kind of story so they all fit together and that is the two characters from the previous two songs when they meet each other. It’s about meeting someone you love and feeling powerful... when you meet someone and suddenly everything feels alright again.

‘Princess of China’ (ft. Rihanna): I actually sort of wrote it for Rihanna and then I liked it too much. And then it became clear it was a sort of back and forth between a couple. It took about a year to pluck up the courage but eventually I asked her and she was not unwilling. I played it for her on piano in Los Angeles. That was quite nerve-wracking, I’ve gotta to say. And she said, “Oh okay... Yeah!” ‘Up In Flames’: We wrote that about four weeks ago and then we recorded it in five countries in seven days. That was fun. That was when we knew we could finish the record because Will - who’s the hardest to please of the band - when he heard that he said, “Okay, we can finish now,” because I think he liked the space on it. ‘A Hopeful Transmission/Don’t Let It Break Your Heart’: Well I think we wanted to do an album with a happy ending this time, and I think we’ve actually done it. For whatever reason it is, it’s happened... this song was very late in the day and it’s nice ‘cos you just hit everything as hard as possible, which for a band like Coldplay is a very pleasurable thing. ‘Up With The Birds’: That was when we were sort of thinking about a story that seemed like the end of a movie type thing.

‘M.M.I.X.’: It doesn’t stand for 2009. It came from [long-serving guitar tech] ‘Mat McGinn is awesome’ so I don’t know why the fuck it got called that! It has nothing to do with anything like that; it stands for nothing, it’s just a collection of letters. ‘Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall’: This runs with the central theme of the record, about trying to turn bad things into good things somehow. We as a band have been through some funny incidents in terms of people being aggressive towards us or whatever. A lot of the record is fuelled by a kind of fire which comes from turning that negativity into positivity. And I think everyone in their life has something like that. ‘Major Minus’: That’s like a Bond villain of a song. A bad cousin of the album. It’s the nasty one.

Further Info COLDPLAY- MYLO XYLOTO OUT MON 24 OCT

‘UFO’: That was the first song written for the album actually, and the chord sequence in it pops up a few times. And that’s a kind of ‘prayer times’ kind of song. There’s a lot of feeling lost on the album but also being found as well and that’s very much a bit of both.

WIN: COLDPLAY- MYLO XYLOTO 5 X COPIES

A Love Note to The Dark Knight WE’VE BEEN COMING down with a bad case of Batman Fever at the office. First of all, there’s no disputing the awesomeness that Arkham City is putting out. But it’s a little more than that for us, and me in particular. Despite not having superpowers, Batman is one of the go-to characters in “who would win between...” scenarios. He’s got the best villains. He’s arguably had the best comic-book-to-movie adaptation ever. He’s everything a superhero should be, and fans love him. But it’s not just the fans that do. Batman, along with Star Wars and Harry Potter, are probably the most acceptable franchises of geekdom. You’re more willing to read a Batman comic because of the accessibility. You’re familiar with the characters thanks to all of the movies, whether you’re looking at the classic Keatons, the camp Clooneys, the abysmal Kilmers or the outshined Bales. Because of the heavy Batman saturation in day-to-day living, he’s a character that you know without even realising it. You might surprise yourself at this very moment by listing off a number of supporting heroes and villains in the Dark Knight’s universe. The Dark Knight flipped audience expectations of what a comic book movie can be. Now the blogosphere has leaked images, videos and hearsay of the third installment The Dark Knight Rises. And how could you not? With the creative talent of Christopher Nolan, Tom Hardy, Joseph GordonLevitt and Marion Cottilard behind it, it’s hard not to get excited. A character like Batman opens up the everyman to new worlds. His popularity, relatability and accessibility affords people the willingness to look at comics. They get excited about what could very well be the biggest game of the year. They wear the belt buckles. They buy the classic t-shirts. They look at Adam West in a whole new light. He’s more than a cultural icon – he’s a cultural influence. So here’s a salute to The Dark Knight, and everything that comes with him. WRITTEN BY kevin kartun

I’ve tried about five different ways to start this review, but none of them are anywhere near as good as the opening of this game. From the get go you’re required to render your foes unconscious as only Batman can. Combat is elegantly simple and hugely satisfying knowing you can walk into a room and kick the shit out of 20 dudes without breaking a sweat. The artwork and graphics of the game are simply stunning. Arkham City is a sprawling cesspit of low life scum and challenges for Batman to navigate. Luckily he’s pretty darn good at it thanks to the wonder that is his cape and Batclaw. Honestly, I’ve enjoyed this game so much that I actually would prefer to stop writing this review now so I can go back and keep playing. All of Gotham’s thugs and criminal super minds have been moved to a sector of the city. It’s our job as Batman to clear this mess up and discover what the Joker, Penquin, Mr. Freeze and the rest are up to. Detective mode lets us analyze situations, pick up on clues and read the heart rate of our adversaries to know just how much we’ve managed to scare them. Scare them too much and they’ll start walking in pairs and get extremely twitchy trigger fingers. This game is massive in every sense of the word. It’s an open world from the start and the possibilities to be distracted are endless. Follow the story, play as Catwoman, tackle random crime, take on Riddler challenges or enjoy the many extra features. Think Assassin’s Creed free-running meets strategy of Metal Gear Solid with the fighting of UFC and you may get close to realizing how awesome this game is. Five top game sites gave this a 10/10 and it would be hard for me not to as well. WRITTEN BY JON SNOW

RUGBY SHIT

SUNDAY 23 RUGBY GUIDE Eden Park Well, no shit. If you’ve got at least one ticket, you’re a bloody millionaire or some lucky bastard who’s won a competition. The game is going to be huge and the excitement will be heard throughout the city, nay, the country. The entire competition has come down to this game alone, and it’s undoubtedly the best place to watch it. Although, not everyone has a ticket, let alone a bunch of mates who have them as well. START TIME: 6pm

Nation’s Clubrooms

Your Place

That’s right. The casino. The Nation’s Clubrooms in particular, since the whole bar has been made for the World Cup anyway. It’s not like you’ll be getting bored there, but if for some reason you feel you have to leave the bar (because some guy was looking at you sideways and he’s way bigger than you or that skank that screwed your ex is there looking like the tart she is) then there’s always the multitude of other bars in SkyCity that you can check out. Or, if you’re feeling lucky, you could even head to the casino itself.

Duh. Whatever channel you want to watch it on, you can. You don’t even need Sky! It helps if you don’t like ads, but screw it, ads are fine. They enable you to take a tinkle (unless you’ve been practising your keegles – totally helps). The pros for watching the game at home are obvious. The drinks are cheap; you’re comfortable; you haven’t forked out your hard-earned money on a taxi, bus or ticket. You can get creative and make seats out of stuff MacGyver would be proud of. You can invite plenty of folks round if you want that crowd environment. But then you’d have to do the clean up. So, if cleaning up isn’t your bag, then it would make sense to go out somewhere. There’s so many pubs and bars to choose from, and they all want your cash.

START TIME: 6pm

START TIME: When you wake up.

Odlins Plaza, Wellington

Hood St, Hamilton

Hagley Park, Christchurch

Odlins plaza next to the Wharewaka on Wellington’s Waterfront finishes up as the official Fanzone for the capital. It might not be as packed as the quarter finals weekend, but the excitement will still be plentiful.

The Fanzone in Hamilton will be open from 7pm right through to midnight. Make sure you plan a way of getting there ahead of time as the street closes from 4pm through to 4am.

Entertainment from Anika Moa and The Thomas Oliver Band join the fun on finals night at Hagley Park. Just across from the Fanzone will be the Presenting Canterbury festival with family friendly fun throughout the day.

START TIME: 7pm

START TIME: 7pm

START TIME: 7pm

The White House

The Cloud

Yeah, didn’t think we’d be throwing that in, did you? It’s not just home to those ladies that you’re sure are actually into you. Auckland’s local house of white has more than horizontal-to-vertical action on a pole. They’re actually playing the game as well. And there’s worse half time entertainment to be had, right?

This place was made for the World Cup. It’s had its ups and its downs. It’s in the heart of the city and the job has been done well to keep the attraction entertaining enough to make you want to go back. The Cloud is party central, and no party tonight will be more central than this. There’s plenty of other entertainment on pre- and post-final including Gin Wigmore, Avalanche City, Cut Off Your Hands, The Checks and Kids of 88. Best of all, it’s free.

START TIME: 7:30pm

START TIME: 3pm

don’t miss the excitement this weekend!

X Marks The App TECH There’s a bit of a comic theme going on this week, so what better time to report on the new Marvel comic app for Android. Powered by comiXology (which is free to download as a standalone app), the software opens up Android users to the digital library of what Marvel has to offer. The question is, is it worth it? Having a comic app on a smartphone is almost moot. Personally I’ll stick to the real thing over digital comics any day, but the digital revolution in the comics industry has started to happen so you may as well roll with it. Really, you’re looking at an app for your tablet. The images are bigger and clearer, which is what you really want. But the prices for the comics are a problem. They’re cheap enough, but (and we may treading on illegal territory here) the fact remains that you can easily find downloadable comics online. The fans will still buy the physical trades, hardcovers and single issues after downloading (legally or not) because simply, they can’t be beat and you want them for your collection. The prices on the Marvel app store range from free to over US$10, and that’s almost too much to justify not having the real thing. Mostly, the highlight of the app is the idea that you can get previews and freebies from the store, which is meant to get you excited enough to buy the real thing. Digital is the way of the future, but nothing beats the simplicity of turning a page.

The Guitar of the future TECH If you have an iPad 2, then you might be in the know about the GhostGuitar app that turns your tablet into an electric guitar. Pretty sweet if you don’t know how to play instruments but you need some bus money – just turn up the volume and go with some Blink 182 jam which is basically only four chords for any given song anyway. Yes, the chords on the GhostGuitar app are all pre-programmed, of course. But there’s a new piece of hardware on the horizon. Hardware, not another app. Starr Labs are in mid-production of the iTar. Looking at the image, it’s pretty self-explanatory what that is. The company is famous for its fretboard technology which has been used in

instruments by the likes of the Chemical Brothers, Lou Reed and several film and television studios. The iTar is the first product that Starr Labs is developing for the public, although resources are limited. A Kickstarter project is underway to get the iTar in full swing – have a look for it online.

album reviews Feist Metals llll

It’s been four years since Canadian songstress Leslie Feist shot to prominence on the back of an iPod Nano ad featuring the single ‘1,2,3,4’. Parent album The Reminder was brilliant, and she’s since collaborated with the likes of Ben Gibbard (on the Nationalcurated Dark Was The Night compilation) and Wilco. Metals is a far more languid affair than its predecessor, skirting a fine line between contemplation and melancholy – check the guitar/ piano/organ combo in ‘Graveyard’ playing off the refrain “Bring them all back to life”. ‘Bittersweet Melodies’ (the title says it all)

James Blake

features hollow percussion, as does ‘Undiscovered First’, which swells with impressive horns and unexpectedly loud guitar. ‘Anti-Pioneer’ nicks some strings off Sea Change-era Beck (another prior collaborator) who’d already lifted them from Serge Gainsborough. It’s generally a slow-burn affair, but some tracks here – the delicately ravaged ‘Comfort Me’ and the more immediate ‘A Commotion’ – rank among her best work to date. WRITTEN BY CHRIS POLE

Professional indie heartthrob and supposed dubstep innovator James Blake has left his drum machine at home. Enough Thunder marks the point at which Blake forgot what he came here for, and gives out to pressure from those who bay for his blood regularly. A gentle cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Case Of You’ could have marked out a base from which an aural assault could spring and solidify his position in either Camp Dubstep or Camp Singer/ songwriter. Instead, what follows merely meanders and wanders loosely towards a reputable performance. Everything else is here: the vocal deformities (both natural and processed), the haunting background swells, and piano-driven ballads, however there’s no sign of a propulsive beat until the spastic whirrs and clicks of closer ‘We Might Feel Unsound’. Although it could easily be read as a sit-down rebellion against the notoriety his more beat-based material has gained, it still provides no excuse for a slightly disappointing bunch of slow songs.

Delaney Davidson is a rambling bluesman who hails from New Zealand but has toured all across the world. Bad Luck Man is full of wonky blues with a side order of gloomy country. There’s a hint of Nick Cave or Elvis Costello in Davidson’s voice making him sound distinct but also familiar. Woozy Wurlitzers dance with the spare guitar chords on ‘Time Has Gone’ but fortunately things aren’t always so grim; Davidson still gets his knees up a bit when called upon. The clattering percussion on the unhinged ‘I’ve Got The Devil Inside Me’ is one of the few signposts that this is actually a modern album. This is the sort of record that miserable Sunday afternoons and whiskey were made for. Bad Luck Man is a quaint little album from a man who clearly has his mind in another time period altogether.

Listening to their debut album, it’s not hard to see why Shotgun Alley has opened for ZZ Top and Alice Cooper (among others), making them one of our country’s most sought after curtain raisers and a respected band in their own right. Their brand of slick, swaggering rock music harkens back to the golden age of The Sunset Strip when bands like Motley Crue ruled the land. The high-octane guitar riff of ‘Want This’ screams Def Leppard and ‘I Came Here To Love Her’ owes a debt to The Cars. In ‘Give It All Up For Rock’ Shotgun Alley shows off the sort of self-gratifying tune that every hearty rock band wishes they had written. Shotgun Alley is a sharply produced album by young rockers for young rockers. If you miss the glory days of the ‘80s then this album is definitely for you.

WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

Listening to Portland natives Blitzen Trapper’s alt-country/ folk is gonna send you right back to 1972 on lyrical, gossamer wings. Better pack your paisley and flairs, man! With Mumford, Pernices and the Foxes all bringing back folk rock it was no surprise that these dudes have become darlings of the ragged glory-music bibles like Rolling Stone. And it probably helps they sound a lot like the ‘Dead, Dylan, Skyhooks and CSN&Y, too. American Goldwing is BT’s sixth outing, counting EP and singles releases, and they still drive their rig slap-bang in the middle of the dusty highway. ‘Love The Way You Walk Away’ is a nice gentle rocker, while ‘My Home Town’ and ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ are pure Mr Zimmerman, without the references to handheld percussion and windy solutions. For variety, ‘Street Fighting Sun’ leans a tad towards Led Zeppelin with heavy wah-wah peddle clamour and some dirty blues harps. But on the whole, it’s all pleasant, faded denim rock.

creation? The filmmaker veers from scientific-based fact to existential theorising. From a prehistory nut flaunting fur clothes and a handmade flute, to a pack of albino alligators, Herzog connects the dots in intriguing ways. Whilst the conjecture and speculation about the back story of these paintings is fascinating, it’s the window to the world of our distant ancestors that provides weight. Much like the mysteries of existence itself – abstract, bizarre, and fascinating – these forgotten dreams are incredible.

Footloose

The original Footloose was a fun film, not a great film. It became a classic by the sum of its parts: the cheesy music, the dancing, the story – and Kevin Bacon. Craig Brewer’s new version suffers from the same melodrama and silliness as its predecessor – wait until you see how Ren gets to the famous warehouse dance scene – but you can forgive its flaws because it still has those ingredients intact. And while there’s no Bacon, Kenny Wormald as Ren McCormick (complete with James Dean hair) makes for a dashing rebel with a cause, injecting just the right combination of pained kid and who-cares attitude into the role to turn him into, perhaps, the next big pin-up. He even manages to make line dancing look cool. Brewer sticks almost

Picture a chalky cliff face looming over a river in the south of France. Halfway up, past slipshod rocks and scraggly bracken, is a sealed vault. Once in a blue moon, scientists and officials will enter this steel door for a short time to chart the mysteries within. We no longer have to imagine what they have encountered, thanks to

filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) and the express permission of the French government. In three dimensions, Herzog has given us our only chance at seeing the oldest paintings in existence, first discovered in 1994 but dating back over 30,000 years. Granted, the 3D effect is not entirely convincing, but it’s the only way to come close to experiencing the dimensions and atmosphere of these caves for ourselves. Herzog’s film is not a dry exhibition of prehistoric art, but instead sets the mind in motion – who painted these works, why, and – most importantly – how do we interpret them tens of thousands of years after their

religiously to the original story, the contemporary references occasionally jarring against its old-fashioned themes. Ren now dances with his iPod, the black kids krump in the carpark and the grown-ups worry about the recession. And that’s about where the updating ends. The script, the costumes, the music and the cars are virtually the same; only the tone has had a makeover, cranking up the pace to the slick tempo of next generation dance flicks such as Step Up. If the remake’s goal was to turn a classic into an easily digested teen flick, they’ve succeeded. Time will tell if it’s still a classic, but if they can make linedancing look good then Footloose still has a pulse. WRITTEN BY REBECCA BARRY, Flicks.co.nz

While Errol Morris’s documentary subject may be the rather ‘devoted’ Joyce McKinney, Tabloid is really about the power of the British media to take a story and its main protagonists and run with them. As two former rival hacks reminisce during the film, The Daily Express championed McKinney’s crusade (even to the point of having her pose in a nun’s habit) while The Daily Mirror set out to discredit her and their rival by digging up as much dirt as they could (with some of the photos more suitable for The Sun’s Page 3 than anywhere else). Yes, if the recent News of the World saga has only just made you aware of the rivalry amongst Britain’s smaller-sized

newspapers, then this will certainly enlighten you of the lengths the ‘red tops’ (so known because of their masthead colour) go to outsell their competitors. Mixing archival footage and new interviews with many of the key players (who virtually all have different accounts of how it all went down) and backed by an urgent and insistent score, Tabloid is this year’s Man on Wire, a twisty-turny crowdpleasing documentary about a barely believable real-life event that many of us never knew about, and others have completely forgotten. ON SCREEN The week in preview tv highlights

Debbie’s Done It All Prime rocks: blondie Monday sees a good feature on PRIME ROCKS, with this week’s in-depth look at the iconic American rock band Blondie. Debbie Harry and crew have an interesting story. The singer is more than just a pretty girl on a t-shirt who makes cameos in films and television shows. The band spent the ‘70s making a name for themselves as one of the biggest pop acts on the planet. But, as bands do, they fell victim to splits and solo

careers. The band reunited and found themselves back in the charts some 20 years later. The New York punk scene took the iconic band to heart, along with the mainstream in festivals and arenas. PRIME ROCKS: Blondie will feature footage from the BBC archive as well as interviews with Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. PRIME ROCKS: Blondie Monday 24 October, 9:30pm, PRIME

It’s the season finale of How I Met Your Mother this Monday on FOUR at 7:30pm. The end the sixth season sees Ted (Josh Radnor) feeling like he’s in a great place relationship-wise (which is what all guys worry about deep down) but bumping into his ex, Zoey (Jennifer Morrison). Also winding up the season is Doctor Who over on PRIME at 8:3spm on Thursday. The Doctor must make his final journey to the uncertain shores of Lake Silencio in Utah. As all good season finales do, the universesaving decision involves the doctor’s death. Movie wise, highlights of the week would have to go to Jaws: The Revenge on Sunday at 8:30pm and From Hell on Tuesday at 8:30pm. There’s no point in trying to break down the former – big bad ass shark likes to eat people, people don’t

like to be eaten. From Hell gets a little more serious. Based on Alan Moore’s comic, we see a sinister take on Jack the Ripper starring Johnny Depp and Heather Graham. Considering the story is sinister enough, it all gets pretty dark and pretty horror/thriller-ey. Catch both of these on FOUR next week. Over on TV2 you’re looking at some lighter entertainment, with Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End airing on Saturday at 7:30pm. Big Disney budgets and huge family-friendly action spectacles ensue. The end of the weekend sees the Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly comedy Step Brothers air on Sunday at 8:30pm. It’s far from their best work, but the comedy is still there along with an excellent rendition of the famous ‘Por Ti Volare’.
