Breaking news Incubus has announced two New Zealand shows next year. This will be the bands fourth time touring as they celebrate the release of their new album If Not Now, When?. Auckland and Wellington audiences will be treated to shows in January and February. Tiny Ruins has had to cancel her upcoming tour. The singer, real name Hollie Fullbrook, was involved in a motorcycle accident in Zanzibar. While the accident wasn’t lifethreatening, Hollie will be taking the next couple of months to recuperate. Ladi6 has announced a regional tour over the New Year. December and January will see the singer play with Trinity Roots in Lower Hutt and New Plymouth, The Black Seeds in Mangawhai and Kora in Waihi and Mt. Maunganui. Last week saw the release of recording software Pro Tools 10. Over 50 new features have been added to the upgraded software such as Avid channel strip, mixed file formats up to 32-bit, connections to SoundCloud, iTunes and other digital distribution avenues, an extended disk cache and plenty more.

Mix up some Latin dancing with cabaret and burlesque, throw in some jazz and fuse it with funk, while collecting musicians from back-up bands of the likes of Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Peter Frampton, Heart, AC/DC, Tina Turner and more. Combine all these ingredients and stir briskly to get Vortex Tribe — a fusion band with members Deborah Yates, Jon Mulvey, Jerry Marotta, and Prairie Prince on the bill. The lesser-known band will be heading to New Zealand for six shows in November.

Celebrating the joint album between herself and Mara TK Jr Band of Brothers Vol. 1, the songstress will be joined by her band and supported by Grand Rapids and The Nok for a show at Auckland’s Sale St on Thursday 17 November and at Bodega in Wellington on Friday 18 November.

Mel Parsons has announced that due to unforeseen circumstances, the last three shows of her nationwide tour have been cancelled. The shows in Coromandel, Gisborne and Napier originally slated for the beginning of November have now been pulled, however the songstress still has four shows this week. Last week the band hit the number one spot on the New Zealand album chart with their debut, and have announced a second Auckland show at the Powerstation following their album release tour with support from Supervillains. The original show on Friday 11 November has sold out, so one last show on Saturday 12 November has been added before the band heads overseas for their Australian tour.

The Stone Roses have announced they will embark on a world tour next year, celebrating their reformation and release of new material with the original line-up of Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni. No word yet on where the band will be playing apart from two shows in their hometown of Heaton Park in Manchester, but Brown said at a press conference last week, “This is a live resurrection and you’re invited, so you’d better be there.” Morrissey has grounds to go sue NME according to reports from The Guardian. Back in 2007, the former frontman for The Smiths was quoted in an interview as saying, “The gates of England are flooded. The country’s been thrown away... I don’t have anything against people from other countries, [but] the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears.” Morrissey threatened legal action soon after said article went to print, and subsequently donated £28,000 to the charity Love Music, Hate Racism. The singer said that his reputation had been tarnished ever since the interview. Several months ago, Pitchfork reported that there was looming legal trouble on the horizon for Kanye West and Jay-Z due to hiccups regarding the sampling of soul singer Syl Johnson’s ‘Different Strokes’ on the Yeezy and Jay-Z track ‘The Joy’. Now Billboard is reporting that Johnson filed a lawsuit against the rappers for sampling his
song and releasing it on Watch the Throne. This isn’t Johnson’s first time talking about copyright issues – he’s previously taken the likes of Michael Jackson and Cypress Hill to court over alleged sampling without permission and has had varying results in terms of settlement.

Courtney Love has pulled out of Soundwave. A week after the official line-up was announced, the Hole singer kicked up a fuss after she found out her band would be opening for Limp Bizkit. Soundwave organiser AJ Maddah said that he would “wait to talk to her dipshit agent” before confirming that the ‘90s band had officially dropped out of the line-up, but eventually said that the only excuse offered by Love’s management was that Hole did not want to share the stage/open for Fred Durst’s crew. Maddah understandably said that he was “really mad” but added that Soundwave management was relieved that they “got the moody old cow off the bill”. Love responded to all of this as many musicians do these days by taking to twitter to vent her frustration in a public forum, saying that she would love to play the festival but questioned “what bloody flight of crazed fancy made you think we’d open for limp dude?”.
Announcement Spectacular Late last week saw huge announcements of bands heading to our shores next year. So in chronological order: UK punk rockers The Damned will play one show in Auckland on Wednesday 25 January at the Powerstation; Californian alt/funk heads Incubus will be playing at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Tuesday 31 January and Wellington’s TSB Bank Arena on Wednesday 01 February; following their cancelled show earlier this year, The Sisters Of Mercy have announced a rescheduled show for Wednesday 22 February at Auckland’s Powerstation; raucous new garage sensations Black Lips play at Auckland’s Powerstation for one show only on Tuesday 28 February; and finally ex-psych-rocker and current Okerville River collaborator Roky Erickson will play one show at Auckland’s Powerstation on Wednesday 07 March. Looks like the beginning of the year will be a busy one for the iconic Eden Terrace venue in Auckland.
Shit Worth Knowing
I’m Super, Thanks for asking What the hell is going on with all of these “superheroes”? Ever since Mark Millar’s comic book Kick-Ass came out followed by the film adaptation, real-life people have been asking themselves why people don’t go out dressed up in costume and fight for truth and justice the attention-seeking way. One of the most infamous “supes” is Detroit masked-man Phoenix Jones. You may have seen the street-level beat-worker on YouTube spraying pepper spray into the eyes of those he deems as having done unjust actions. But life isn’t a comic book and when you attack people on the street there are legal repercussions. So what do superheroes do? What would the likes of Batman, Spider-Man or Wolverine do when faced with legal action? They sure as hell wouldn’t call for a sanctioning body to represent the men behind the masks. And that’s the difference between real life and comic books. The website reallifesuperheroes.org is throwing around the idea of a representing body/council for the growing movement of crime-fighters. Hey, if you want to do some good for the community – go for it. Help out. If you see someone in trouble, call the cops. Do what you can to help in day-to-day life. But don’t go martyring yourself after pepper spraying someone. You’re looking for a fight, and that’s just a dick move.

The Smashing Pumpkins are getting some nostalgic reissues. Gish (1991) and Siamese Dream (1993) are the iconic band’s first two albums, and EMI is launching an extensive re-release campaign in December across multi formats. The CD, deluxe, vinyl and digital editions are all of course remastered. EMI announced that they will also be issuing a collection of B-sides from 1991-2000, saying “The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation.” In even further Smashing news, early next year the band will be releasing Oceania after their American and European tour. Described as “an album within an album”, Oceania is a part of the band’s in-progress 44-song work Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, and will feature 13 new songs.

Film News An actress who has not been named is suing film website IMDB for revealing her age and real name. The subsidiary of Amazon.com is suffering legal action on the basis that the actress’ information was acquired by unlawful means and has subsequently been damaging to “Jane Doe’s” career in the youth-orientated town of tinsel. A Zombieland sequel has been in the works since the film won over audiences and received the critical acclaim it deserved. Now, however, it’s looking like the sequel has developed into a television series. This was the original idea behind the project before it was turned into a feature, so we could be looking at a new zombie series for 2012-2013. You may remember the DVD release of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth earlier this year. The film won over critics and was criticised at the same time for its dark and taboo tones. Now Lanthimos is returning with Alps, which has been picked up for distribution in America. There’s no word of the film reaching our shores yet, but we’re hoping the unique filmmaking style of Lanthimos impresses audiences enough for Alps to at least make it over for next year’s NZ Film Fest. Occupy Wall Street has two notable film directors thinking. One (unsurprisingly) is Michael Moore, who is inspired to make another documentary. The other, much more out of left field, is Chris Nolan who is considering shooting the occupation as part of The Dark Knight Rises.

There’s a credit crunch on and everyone is tightening their purse strings. So much so that money becomes irrelevant and people start trading goods and services for time. As in, you’re born, and you get time, then you work, and you get time, but you spend, and you lose time. It’s a weird concept, but kind of interesting.
It’s a bummer being a teenager. Especially when you’re a British teenager on a television show, because things always seem so hard. You’re always awkward with girls and your friends are idiots. Until you get your movie deal and you’re basically in an elongated episode, yet the storyline is still really funny.

Florence + The Machine helmer Florence Welch has had enormous success with her debut record, and as she prepares to release her follow-up Ceremonials, Groove Guide tries to uncover just how she got here.
JUST OVER TWO years ago, enigmatic hit-making and soul-breaking magazine NME spun a story about Florence Welch. She was pinned as a waif, a delinquent, and a wayward soul, decked head-to-toe in flowery, flouncy dresses, bangles and all the rest. Her verbatim addressed everything but the music for which she was fast becoming noted for, focussing instead on skipping college, wearing leopard-print platforms, inhaling, and falling out of trees on Hampstead Heath. A story on scuzzy, London-based, Velvet Underground-adoring duo The Big Pink a few months later detailed a house party in Shoreditch – Ms Welch herself running up and down stairs to change LPs whilst members of Klaxons looked on. It seems that Welch, in her own way, was always a fixture. Fast forward to late 2010 and Flo is mid-way through her tour to support her debut album Lungs. She needn’t have though, because as she jet-setted across Europe on the strength of ‘Dog Days’, battle plans were being drawn for her invasion Stateside. Within months she’d performed at the VMAs and the Grammys, on Saturday Night Live and The Colbert Report. Time magazine ranked her as a very important person. Lungs charted in the Top Ten in a lot of countries. Joan Rivers mocked her on Fashion Police. It seems a far cry from the early successes of the frantic ‘Kiss With A Fist’ and the haunting ‘Girl With One Eye’, both tracks existing and thriving on the strength of Welch’s voice which, thanks to raw and unadulterated production, shone through. Lungs expanded on that heavily percussive format, indie go-to guy Paul Epworth unlocking any proverbial door he could find. His production turned already soulful songs into skyscraping anthems. Let’s not forget, though, artists the world over struggle for decades to get half of Welch’s success with double the talent, and now that entirely indistinct voice has become a vehicle for lumpy big-wigs to make some serious cash. She proclaims that her upcoming record Ceremonials is “a group of songs that paint a unified picture of where I am in my life right now”. Strange thing is: she’s never done that before.
If ‘Girl With One Eye’ was an accurate representation of her life up to that point (“I took a knife and cut out her eye/ I took it home and watched it wither and die”) then surely we should all be increasingly worried by the means by which she’s achieved her fame to date. Read any interview with Welch in support of Ceremonials and you’ll get the same spool of misrepresentation. Any journalist worth their salt can pick up on the endless buzzwordcoaching she’s been given over the last few years, and it doesn’t take much investigating to find quotes riddled with pauses as she desperately tries to explain her own view on a topic that isn’t her perceived and enforced faux-eccentricity. Her biography proclaims her to be an art college “dropout” – as if somehow that’s something to aspire to. Of course, with any major success comes that enormous portion of budding hacks dying to make their big break, and so Welch becomes merely another tool for their supposed trade. Various publications discuss her ADHD, insomnia, anorexia and dysmetria in depth whilst identifying her musical career to date with two slivers of transcript intended to shoehorn some context in to the mix: this is Florence Welch, she makes music occasionally, but she’s mental most of the time. Regardless of any internal struggle (which Epworth seems to smother in reverb, irrespective of the sentiment), Florence Welch still walks the red carpet with the rest of them; she still parties with Anna Wintour, she still gets followed by the hounding British tabloids and not the credible music press, and she still stands to make an enormous pile of cash should the ensuing PR campaign for Ceremonials pay off. Politics aside, leading single ‘What The Water Gave Me’ is a monster tune – it rises, crests, and falls before exploding outwards, and there certainly will be more to come. So simply remember this: if you can ignore that plastic fascination and flashing photography in favour of her impressive canon of work, then you can truly appreciate Florence and her marvellous machine.

Fly My Pretties are back, adopting Hayley King – AKA Flox – as the go-to girl for the visual accompaniment that has become such an integral part of recent tours...
FLY MY PRETTIES have become something of a New Zealand institution. Formed in 2004, debuting with the brilliant Live At Bats and fermented over another seven years, the revolving collective of musicians has morphed and transformed over the duration of each tour, providing the heady sense of theatre and spectacle that is lacking from many other regular touring bands and collectives. This year’s line-up calls upon the core cast, most of who were present through the previous three tours, including L.A. Mitchell, Anna Coddington and Age Pryor, whilst expanding to accommodate the wealth of new music emanating from these shores. Alongside members of The Nudge, Cairo Knife Fight, Kora and even Flip Grater herself, visual artist Hayley King – under the guise of Flox – has joined the ranks as one of the few non-musical contributors. But that doesn’t mean her gifts to the service will be any less integral to the overall presentation of the show. King’s illustrations seem like a perfect fit for something as organic as Fly My Pretties, her works often incorporating native birds and bustling natural surrounds, from sparser prints to expansive and intricate murals splashed on to the walls of public buildings. As a former collaborator with the excellent street art co-op Cut Collective, King is used to the intense pressure that regular deadlines bring. “For me, I’ve been doing this for so long now, so I feel I am a confident artist in my own right,” she says. “But it’s daunting in regard to working with some really amazing musicians which I’ve never done before, and going on tour with them, which is crazy, crazy stuff. I’ve been on tour with Cut Collective – we used to do group shows together which is a bit like being in a band because we were always fighting and all the rest, but it’s a different kind of creative field altogether.”
King was first approached by ringmasters Barnaby Weir and Mikee Tucker. “They both came in to my studio one day and basically pinned me down,” she laughs, “and said they wanted me to be a part of it all.” She was set to work attacking the enormous scope that a show of Fly My Pretties’ calibre demands. “I have to illustrate all 15 tracks which each need to work as a poster, so when you walk in to the gig there’ll be an exhibition of 15 posters, one for every track, available in limited edition prints,” says King. “Also, it has to translate certain elements, somehow from that poster or vice versa, into something that can be brought to life or somehow animated, so a lot of the imagery is going to be used in the backdrop behind the musicians on stage in various forms, that’s the new part for me. I’m not doing any of the animation, but I have to think of the images in that way and how they can be interesting for people to look at and how they can evolve, I guess, and basically how they can be brought to life.” Although working in and around a medium she’s unfamiliar with, Flox isn’t daunted by the responsibility that comes with marrying visual accompaniment to musical expression. “I definitely feel responsible,” she says. “I have to come up with something that works as a 2D illustration and also as some sort of 3D working element, and the artist has to be happy with it as well and it has to reflect who they are and what the song is about, to a certain degree, so there’s lots of boxes to tick if you like.” As usual, the tour will be filmed in all the major centers of the tour to be released as a live DVD, displaying all of King’s talents in highdefinition glory. There should be no doubt that she will approach her duties in Fly My Pretties with anything less than the aplomb we should expect from a world-class artist.

Youth in Revolt Midnight Youth are unashamed in announcing what they are: a band. A rock’n’rolling band with real instruments. They have been relatively quiet on the home front since enjoying the success of their debut. That’s largely due to their youthful song quota, but now with another 10 to add to the set list, Jeremy Redmore says the band is eyeing up a pub tour of New Zealand. Those 10 new songs are what we’re interested in so here goes…
IT’S BEEN FIVE years since Midnight Youth began to lay the foundations for their freshman effort The Brave Don’t Run, and those five years have made the difference. Redmore says their first was introverted, but World Comes Calling is a different story. “It’s an extroverted album,” he muses. “We aren’t singing about ourselves. It’s things we’ve seen.” This new outward view offers listeners a moodier, more observational Midnight Youth with attitude. “It’s a definition of where we’re at. A snapshot of us right now.” Redmore says the band even toyed with the idea of self-titling the record. But they didn’t. It was a struggle to name World Comes Calling, so they lifted the name straight off of what is now the title track. “It’s a little bit of magic,” Redmore says on their choice of moniker. “It affects you. I don’t quite know how.” He’s right though; the name has that niggle that makes you sit up and listen. Growing up gives you grown up aspirations. Midnight Youth want to be a live band, and even go so far as to say they see themselves suiting the live festival circuit. Redmore has a vision of them as a nighttime rock set at Glastonbury. The majority of the songs on World Comes Calling are written for live performance, and even the song descriptions encapsulate this desire. The band recently spent a year living and touring together in Sydney, which allowed for them to try and throw away songs; their songwriting
technique has been to test live. Living together also allowed for them grow tighter. “We’re like a family. It’s a cool vibe,” says Redmore. “We’d go out every weekend.” He says that it was a handy situational thing because when he gets song ideas, Simon’s right there with him. “It’s like a gang feel. It’s a unique thing.” Redmore expects touring details to be out soon, and stayed tightlipped when asked if there are any festival dates looming with the summer festivals drawing closer. “Summer is up in the air,” was all he would let on. However, he did mention that he’d like for the band to play somewhere like Rhythm & Vines and Big Day Out. “We feel we’ve done the band justice,” says Redmore. “We’re doing what the people we look up to do.” Watch this space, because although those sights are set on stages halfway across the world, Midnight Youth know where their fan base is. “We want to give New Zealand our best shot,” says Redmore.

GAMING Xbox Showcase Event
Last week I was lucky enough to head down to the flash Wynyard Quarter to enter a big bubble that I happened to rightly assume was the HP Winter Garden. Luckily for me it was a hands-on event that didn’t land me with a slap, courtesy of Xbox. The gaming giants were previewing their latest and greatest, and here’s a quick summary. If you loved the first Halo then you’ll have a blast re-living it with Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary, which is the exact same game but in HD. It also has a nifty feature where you can switch the graphics back to non-HD which essentially makes you feel like you’ve taken your glasses off or had one too many pints before playing. I’ve loved the Xbox Kinect for having mates around and playing games that you could class under funnier than interesting. It’s a piece of social hardware that gets you and your mates into what would otherwise be a stupid game, but the competitiveness of the Kinect makes the mundane become playable. The game that caught my attention more than most was Kinect Star Wars. Everyone has wanted to wield a light saber whilst throwing your enemies through a glass window using the force, and now you can. Jump over your enemies, slash them with your light saber, force blast them backwards or pull them towards you all without leaving the spot. Now this is fun. It’s great to see that companies are starting to figure out interesting ways to use the Kinect. Gears of War 3 is another addition to the game that for me stands out more than most
for its forward thinking of the original version to really make the most of co-op mode. Good to know that this carries on with solo, split screen or four-way (via Xbox Live) modes are available. Once again, the graphics are great and gameplay seems to be as enjoyable as it always has been. Unfortunately I didn’t get a long time on this one, but what I played I enjoyed and I’m sure it’ll be as a big a seller as its predecessors. I loved experiencing Forza with three screens, seat, pedals and paddles for gears. However if you’re like me and you’re not Donald Trump, then the game itself is also available on Kinect and 360. The Kinect version I wasn’t sold on, as you have to hold your arms up like you’re driving, but without anything to hold onto, your arms get heavy surprisingly quickly. The game itself is great though – more tracks, more cars and overall it has the same realistic gameplay that most love. All in all a good staple of games for Christmas from Xbox as well as stuff in the pipeline. There were other games on show, but these were the stand outs for me.

album reviews Noel Gallagher Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds llll
In hearing Noel Gallagher’s solo debut I was relieved, but more importantly, impressed. For this guy that’s saying something: in the past decade there have only been sporadic flashes of the former brilliance he exuded in the nineties. And while Noel may not possess that raw Manc fever that Liam’s voice had, it’s evident that he’s relished in the solo vocal opportunity – High Flying Birds is 10 laid back, content tracks that play to his classic songwriter strengths. On ‘If I Had a Gun’, the balladry is at a 10-year high – his best since ‘Stop Crying Your Eyes Out’. ‘AKA... What a Life’

is invigorating in that it actually has a groove you can dance to. ‘The Good Rebel’ shines as a La’s tribute – in fact the only dragging points are when his Kinks/ Smiths infatuation becomes too overbearing. Not Oasis without the voice: this is a second shot at greatness. WRITTEN BY JAKE EBDALE

Sinsin is Geordie McCullum’s (Motocade’s guitarist) latest project. It’s a step into the postpunk lo-fi production values of shoegaze, though given its contemporary existence, it’s nugaze. Layers is a five track debut EP writhing in the former and with dabblings of industrial and psychedelic. The title track starts things off instrumentally, mixing pot tapping and machine noises together to create climbing rhythmic intensity. It is also the acoustic height of the EP, but that’s in no way a downfall. The EP masters atmosphere; an aura of tension creeps throughout all five tracks. The middle three tracks have lyrics, playing more with psychedelia. The vocals are mournful and ‘Blinded By Your Eyes’ is particularly haunting. However, there is nothing catchy and nothing happy which makes Layers really exciting. Sinsin could have easily slipped into London twenty years ago and looked the real deal. A fascinating new addition to the Kiwi alter register.
Cream of the blogging crop, this pair were. Now they’re the cream of the major independent label crop. Evan Abeele (he makes most of the music) and Denise Nouvion (she makes the nice lady-noises) released The Years way back in 2010 when it was trés cool to pump out an EP’s worth of acid-washed, hazy electronica before disappearing back into telemarketing. Well, these cats must have something particularly special about them if they managed to sign to Sub Pop, right? Oh yeah, good tunes. Alongside the dense artwork and smoky textures are five gentle odes to... well, something. It all just sounds really nice. ‘Lately’ takes a pretty big slice from Jon Brion’s Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind soundtrack, whilst opener ‘Sleep Patterns’ is marked with the sort of haunting and emotive precedent that is sadly lacking from most flash-in-the-pan blog favourites. If The Years has been remastered for Sub Pop then it is very subtle indeed, but then again, it’s a record to get lost in.
Another set of inspired choices from the only ukulele orchestra that matters. For I Love You… leader Age Pryor and co. have drawn together seven songs that show the diversity of their influences, while adding their own Wellingtonian uke spin – and once the set has zipped past your ears, you definitely find yourself wanting more. The constant wink/nudge of the WUO prevails here: whether it’s the playful AC ditty ‘Afternoon Delight’ (I still can’t get Ron Burgundy out of my head when hearing this) or the lovelorn Steve Jessup singing drunkenly about ‘Raylene’, it’s the sense of summer playfulness that shines through the most. That the two best covers here are by The Smiths and Cyndi Lauper also shows the WUO have a particular knack for resurrecting semi-forgotten ‘80s classics.
J.Cole’s much hyped debut on Jay-Z’s RocNation imprint shows an awkward transition from lyrical mixtape MC to commercial pop-rapper. Cole World lacks the raw energy of his digital releases, instead focusing on bland r’n’b tracks with tween star Trey Songz, and tepid dubstep with a tired Hova. But it’s not all bad. Jermaine sprinkles a few genius lines on each track, which are worth listening to despite sub-par choruses. ‘Dollar And A Dream III’, ‘Lights Please’ and ‘Sideline Story’ are rapped with enough conviction to satisfy hungry fans. The North Carolina native also touches on some interesting subjects, speaking from the viewpoint of a pregnant woman during ‘Lost Ones’ and about daddy issues on ‘Breakdown’. Cole World isn’t another example of major labels crushing young talent to conform, but you can still pick up traces of their poison touch.

on screen Midnight In Paris FILM lll
Like his main character Gil, it’s clear Woody Allen loves Paris and would have liked to have lived there during the 1920s. This is his ode to the city’s cobbled streets, the river and garden landscapes that inspired Monet, filmed through the lovestruck lens of cinematographer Darius Khondji. Paris is probably the strongest character here.

and amused. Some of the dialogue feels contrived, too – the characters coming out with lines as though they were written purely to identify their flaws, particularly the onedimensional Inez. Somehow though, Gil – and in turn Allen – emerges as charming, neurotic and witty. Despite its flaws, Midnight in Paris will leave a smile on your face, and a yearning to visit the Paris of yesteryear.

The Three Musketeers
This latest take on Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers desperately, and very expensively, wants to be fun. All the elements are there for it to be a jaunty romp of an adventure. But while the filmmakers clearly hoped that ritzy bombast would substitute for excitement, the film is charmless, obvious and predictable. Much of the film’s lack of charm is do with main character D’Artagnan, played here by Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson). He starts as he means to go on – arrogant, annoying and smug. The movie’s saving grace is the easy camaraderie Ray Stevenson, Matthew Macfadyen and Luke Evans bring to the titular heroes. With a humorous

As for at least half of the others, well, Allen didn’t exactly write them. Without the likes of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso, Cole Porter, Gertrude Stein, (Kathy Bates) and Salvador Dali (Adrien Brody) appearing as part of writer Gil’s imagination (or not), the story would have been lightweight indeed. Instead it
has a quality that teeters between magical and ridiculous as Gil time travels between his shallow fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) to his surreal romance with Picasso’s mistress Adriana (Marion Cotillard). Don’t count on Gil (a perfectly befuddled Owen Wilson) to hold many illuminating conversations with his idols; the point of this whimsical Allen confection is to muse on the nature of the grass always being greener. But with little conflict in Gil’s fantasy world (everyone appears to him as idealised versions of themselves), Midnight in Paris floats along like the dream sequence it is, leaving the viewer feeling simultaneously cheated
and likeable rapport, all three flesh out the individual identity of their respective musketeer while still adhering to the fabled group dynamic of the characters. They’re so good that you can’t help but think that a movie all about them would really be a winner. Here, they’re relegated to D’Artagnan’s support crew and the movie suffers for it. The acting is appropriately hammy for this type of picture, and the newly added steampunk elements are pretty cool. But despite almighty levels of trying, The Three Musketeers just isn’t as much fun as it thinks it is or anywhere near as much fun as it wants to be. WRITTEN BY KARL PUSCHMANN, Flicks.co.nz
If Hollywood had stuck closer to Bass’s novel, this would have been a Shirley Valentine-sequel tale starring Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman. Instead we have a polo scene inspired by the former’s Pretty Woman, and the Aussie star is solely on producing duties for this The Princess Diaries meets The Lizzie Maguire Movie slice of tween wish fulfillment. Sure, the characters may all be over 18, but the near squeaky clean and chaste mix of Euro hunks, serious bling and shoe porn is clearly aimed at those yet to fully embrace high school. Following in the footsteps of fellow Disney alumni Lohan, Duff and Cyrus, Gomez, in her first adult role, has a certain sweet onscreen charm but
seems destined to play 18 for the next decade. Writer-director Bezucha seems less concerned about plot and more about hiding the fact most of the film was shot in Hungary, showcasing costumes, and hammering home life lessons – Gomez’s character quotes Gandhi twice, even though the movie seems to be saying to the kids that it’s okay to impersonate someone for your own personal gain. More than a little predictable, this so-so effort is also hampered by one of the oddest scores in recent history that sounds like it’s been lifted from The Love Boat. Michael Giacchino clearly lost his way on this one. WRITTEN BY JAMES CROOT, Flicks.co.nz

ON SCREEN SoHo Sets The Bar CHANNEL PREVIEW
We couldn’t be more excited to see the launch of Sky’s new channel SoHo this Monday. The programming takes the best of HBO, AMC and independents to bring together some of the best Emmy-award winning shows of the past ten years. So let’s sneak a peek at all of the shows screening on the launch day, and let the excitement speak for itself. The channel starts broadcasting its programmes from 3pm on Monday 31 October. We kick off with the very first episode of the very first season of the iconic gangster television series The Sopranos. One of the greatest crime shows ever, The Sopranos set the bar for the likes of Boardwalk Empire and The Wire. At 4pm we get a behindthe-scenes of Game Of Thrones – but more on that later. Six Feet Under kicks off from the beginning at 4:30pm. The multi-award winning dark comedy series comes from the mind of Alan Ball whose name you may recognise as the writer of American Beauty and creator of True Blood. It’s not easy to intertwine death and comedy, but Six Feet Under manages to maintain its place near the top of the list for grim American dramas in that vein. Entourage screens at 6pm. Following the final season
wrapping up in the US, Kiwi audiences are treated to the entire series starting from the first episode. The show, often referred to as Sex and the City for guys, shows a bunch of buds who have made it in Hollywood and start enjoying the ride. The complete series’ unique mix of comedy first with drama second will be missed, but here’s your chance to see it in full. In saying that, the minds behind Entourage have a new show which coincidentally enough follows the SoHo premiere. Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg’s How to Make It in America draws many comparisons to their former creation. Swap Hollywood for New York, acting for fashion and twinkletown elite for designers and you’re on the right track. The goodness keeps on coming with True Blood screening at 7pm. See where the cult phenomenon all began with yet another series that starts from the beginning. Vampires have never been as bad to the bone as they are in this underdog awardwinning series. Finally, 8:30pm brings one of the biggest draw cards of them all. The New Zealand premiere of Game Of Thrones screens with episodes one and two creating what is basically a feature-length Monday night presentation. The insanely popular series based on George R.R. Martin’s book
series A Song of Ice & Fire has thrown audiences’ expectations of what primetime viewing can be. Who knew they were so enthralled by a fantasy world? The cast, the production, the writing, the direction – Game Of Thrones has it all and could go on to be the greatest fantasy show ever produced. The highest grade of quality programming continues
after Monday with shows such as Boardwalk Empire, Treme, The Wire, The Hour, The Killing, Dexter, In Treatment, Weeds, Mad Men and more as well as documentaries and films all lined up to blow the competition away. It’s taken a while, but New Zealand could very well have found the best television channel to date.
