Everything has been set in stone for this year’s Art in the Dark. The weekend festival of art, performance and everything in between is all go for Friday 11 and Saturday 12 November at Western Park in Ponsonby. We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at what’s involved this year at the weekend-long night show, and it’s well worth your time.

WOMAD Line-Up Announced Next year sees the 30th anniversary of the World of Music and Dance festival, more commonly known as WOMAD. Over the years the event has brought many diverse acts to our shores, and next year is no different. Artistic director Drew James was of course very excited to be a part of the 30th incarnation, saying, “Once again we have managed to secure a brilliant line-up for WOMAD New Zealand with a particularly strong African contingent... with another 15 countries represented, alongside a strong New Zealand flavour, WOMAD New Zealand 2012 will bring new sounds and experiences from all over the world.” Adam Page, Amiria Grenell and band, Anda Union, Batucada Sound Machine, Bombay Royale, Chapelier Fou, Diego Guerrero y El Solar de Artistas, Dobet Gnahore, Groundation, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Le Trio Joubran, Lo’ Jo, Mad Professor, Mahala Rai Banda, Mama Kin, Master Drummers of Burundi, Minuit vs. Gamelan Taniwha Jaya, Narasirato Pan Pipers, Pascals, Paul Ubana Jones, Sharon Shannon Big Band, Shivkumar Sharma, Sivouplait, Staff Benda Bilili, Te Matarae i Orehu, The Black Seeds, The Yoots, The Nukes, Pajama Club and more have all been announced to play.
It’s been months in the works and is probably the biggest album release of the week. The collaboration between Lou Reed and Metallica was one that not many ever thought about, let alone asked for. But when two of the biggest acts in the last forty years come together, it’s at least worth checking out, right? There are many ways to talk about Lulu, but in any descriptive case you’re looking at the words “concept album”. The instrumentals of Metallica in this collaboration cover their range of styles over a 30 year career. Accompany that with Lou Reed’s spoken word inspired by German expressionist writer Frank Wedekind (telling the story of a young abused dancer’s life and relationships) makes for some strange and interesting lyrics. But that’s why Metallica is on board. To take such abstract lyrics to a different level. Don’t go into the album looking for anything familiar, but look for the familiarity and maybe you’ll find it (in the role of a dewdrock “YEORGH” here and there). Any Lou Reed and/or Metallica fan will appreciate this collaboration, even if the populace finds it aggressive.

Film News Any Indiana Jones fans out there want some closure? Well then open up your eyeholes and earballs for this one. While talking to Empire about the possibility of a fifth installment, Steven Spielberg fronted up about number four, saying “George is in charge of breaking the stories. He’s done it on all four movies. Whether I like the stories or not... I didn’t want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in – even if I don’t believe in it – I’m going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it.” So Spielberg is a good friend but still didn’t admit fully that Indy IV was abysmal. No real surprise, but that’s as much closure as you’ll ever get. Eddie Murphy told Rolling Stone that a fourth Beverly Hills Cop won’t happen, but he’s trying to get a television series in the works instead. That’s kind of meh news, but what’s really nice to hear is that he’s done with crappy family-friendly sequels. He says he wants to focus on more “edgy” flicks (following Hong Kong Phooey), otherwise he’s content to “play my guitar all day”. After two episodes of The Walking Dead’s second season, AMC has committed to producing a third season. Peter Jackson has said that after The Hobbit, he will direct the second Tintin film following the first incarnation of the franchise. Mark Hamill is most famous for his career defining (and ruining?) role as Luke Skywalker. His second most popular role would have undoubtedly been as the voice actor for most appearances of The Joker in any given Batman cartoon or game. That’s over now as well, as Hamill has hung up the purple suit. In saying that, he recently said he would return given the opportunity to voice the character if Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke was produced.

Ah, Gosling. This year has seen America’s next top dreamhunk grow in popularity thanks to some good films (Blue Valentine), some great memes (Hey Girl) and some interesting web clips (stopping a street fight literally singlehandedly). Gosling’s latest hit Drive was the big winner at Cannes this year and deserves your attention.
Apparently William Shakespeare was a hack. He couldn’t write and some other guy gave him some scripts to work with. And Shakespeare went along with it because he was a fame-grabber. One of the accidentally funniest films ever to grace the screen has two viewings around the country this week. Tommy Wiseau’s infamous flick The Room has to be one of the most cringeworthy pieces of crap ever. Luckily, both of these venues sell beers. Probably. Don’t get drunk, we don’t condone that. You can’t prove anything.

Auckland’s Kings Arms sees New Nun Night with Popstrangers, Grayson Gilmour, T54, Surf Friends and Badd Energy, while down in Christchurch, F In Math and Alphabethead play at the Dux De Lux with support from Psych Tigers. It’s all looking pretty great for an opening night.

The biggest band the country has managed to export plays one show for the original audiences this week. The Naked and Famous did some big things at some big festivals while on their whirlwind worldwide tour, and no doubt they’ve picked up some performance antics and tricks. As high school drama teachers would say, “stage presence”.
The Festival for the Future kicks off this Friday and aims to bring together young creatives, entrepreneurs and inspiring young Kiwis and get them using their talents in a way that betters their communities and mankind instead of using their powers for evil. The symposium runs through to Sunday at the NZ Film Archive & NZ Film School.

Markets are a great way to spend a Saturday. Especially niche markets, because there’s less chance of running into your aunt while you’re really hung over (and still kind of buzzed) and with some random stranger who you clearly slept with last night. That kind of scenario is fine at a place like The Mighty Mighty Market.

Kicking off this Tuesday down in Tauranga, the comedian will go on to perform in Taupo, Wellington, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Hamilton, Christchurch, Auckland, Hastings, Gisborne, Nelson, Blenheim, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill throughout the rest of the month.

Stardome Observatory
The Laughing Samoans bring their Greatest Hits showcase to Auckland’s North Shore this weekend. Taking the most popular skits that the comedy duo of Eteuati Ete and Tofiga Fepulea’i have performed since they started nearly a decade ago, The Greatest Hits has been a room-filler internationally and probably will be again.
When stardomes and/or planetariums have a Pink Floyd laser light show, it usually means one thing. Fun. Completely sober fun. Not narcotics-induced fun. Because we all know that nobody gets high and goes to listen to Pink Floyd and watch a laser light show. That scenario has never been referenced in movies and television shows.
Gin Wigmore
Our favourite tattooed blonde popstress with that love-it-or-hate-it voice finishes off her tour this weekend down in Tauranga. not now, forever IT’S MID-AFTERNOON CALIFORNIAN time when I put in a call to Jose Pasillas, percussionist and founding member of the multi-platinum selling alt/funk rockers Incubus. They’ve just returned from a full on two months around States and are repacking for another 30 days in Europe before heading Down Under. The band, formed in 1991 and hitting out with tracks like ‘Drive’, ‘Pardon Me’, ‘Wish You Were Here’, ‘Are You In?’, and ‘Dig’ are planning gigs in New Zealand this coming summer in support of their latest studio effort If Not Now, When?. The album, released in July and featuring the single ‘Promises, Promises’, is their first collective effort in nearly five years, though lead singer Brandon Boyd made a solo album whilst studying and the others turned their efforts to family and social duties. According to Boyd, the album’s title stems from his constant reassessment of life and he references his addiction to the news and the constant bombardment of “important, catastrophic and beautiful events” constantly hitting the headlines. The title also refers to a quote from Hillel, the rabbi of the Mishnah, who declared, “If I am not for myself, who will be? And when I am for myself, what am ‘I’? And if not now, when?” “That third question,” notes Pasillas, “is like an admonition not to postpone any duties – to take responsibility for yourself and others.” Pressing further he adds, “It’s an appropriate name (for the album). We’ve been in the mood for taking risk, making a leap and taking chances… so this album is a little darker and slower than the others. But there’s plenty of variety, different styles and eclectic elements.” It’s that eclecticism that’s contributed to the energy and variety of the band’s live shows. “We like to mix it up,” says Pasillas. “We also try not to duplicate what we do in the studio on stage too closely, add a little improvisation here and there.”
The USA leg of their current tour kicked off with a sell-out show at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the location of their 2004 Live DVD. “Definitely one of the more fun shows,” says Pasillas when asked if it was one of their most memorable. “Great audience vibe. We love the natural outdoor setting, it’s a beautiful location. [Although] the best place to date was The Gorge [a 20,000 seat outdoor venue, located above the Columbia River in George, Washington]. It has an amazing canyon backdrop. We love playing out in the natural surroundings, out of the cities.” Speaking of locations, Incubus will play Auckland and Wellington in Jan/Feb next year, their fourth tour here. Pasillas reminds me that they’re great surfing fans and hope to find a little time for “a couple of curls”. They’ve also jumped off the Sky Tower twice. But pressed for details of the most insane extracurricular activity they’ve undertaken on this tour, he illustrates a stint last week in Vegas flying small fibrolite acrobatic planes. “Three of us went up and we flew over the desert with an instructor,” he says, “but then we took control and started shooting at each other. It’s like laser tag with micros. When you hit someone there’s fake smoke billowing out of the tail or wings. “It’s full on dog fights, with barrel rolls and other maneuvers. Some people would get like sick, woozy. It was pretty cool, though.”

Flying Nun turns 30 Roger Shepherd was a Christchurch record shop manager who happened to be so passionate about the local alternative music scene that he decided to start his own small label to give up and coming bands a means to get themselves heard. Shepherd had been to see the Enemy a few years earlier – fronted by Chris Knox – and recalls, “it was the first time I’d ever been to Dunedin, and I drove down in my Morris 1100, which was not a car built to do that sort of trip... it was a whole group of us, we drove to Dunedin because we’d heard how bloody amazing this band was, and we saw them in the Beneficiaries Hall and The Clean supported them... they were the real deal!” The Enemy were not to last much longer – morphing into Toy Love and then disbanding after an unhappy foray across the ditch – but The Clean, together with Chris Knox and Doug Hood (an Enemy/Toy Love roadie) were to become an integral and essential part of Shepherd’s early efforts. “The thing with the Clean was... the fact they were so creative and dynamic... they were really primitive, really rough, but very interesting.” Shepherd remembers clearly the excitement of the times. The Clean embarked on a North Island tour, and determined to record them, he did something purely on impulse: “I thought I’d come up to Auckland, I’d do this really extravagant thing, buy an airline ticket, come up and see them, because... they were that good.” He successfully persuaded the band to cut a single for his new label. “When they came back down they recorded ‘Tally Ho’ at Arnie’s [Arnold van Bussell, Nightshift studios] for fifty dollars, and I discovered that when you pay fifty dollars for something it means they use the tape again a couple of weeks later for something else!” Against all predictions, ‘Tally Ho’ spent seven weeks in the charts, and the new label was up and running. The Clean ventured north again in September of 1981 and this time Knox and Hood were lying in wait with a recently acquired TEAC four-track. In an old hall in Bond St, one of New Zealand’s classic recordings was made: The Clean’s Boodle, Boodle, Boodle EP, which all up cost $750 to make, and as if to decry its humble beginnings spent the next six months in the charts. “The Clean changed the original idea behind the whole label,” Shepherd recalls. “Everything before that was selling records, trying to sell three hundred records just to make enough to keep recording, and then we had this situation on our hands where we could barely keep up
with the sales. Things were happening on quite a commercial level.” From there the label became home to some of the most influential and idiosyncratic bands this country has ever seen, all with one thing in common: the desire to create and record original music with uncompromising artistic values – subject, of course, to the everfluctuating vagaries of Flying Nun finances. The lo-fi approach to recording worked superbly well for the raw, early music – in Shepherd’s words, “it really suited where the bands were at”. What some of us would regard as landmark recordings – The Dunedin Double EP, The Clean’s Great Sounds Great EP, Louis Likes his Daily Dip by the Tall Dwarfs, The Chill’s Rolling Moon EP, and Beatin Hearts by the Bilders – were all recorded on the TEAC four-track in people’s houses rather than in a professional studio. After all this time, the results still speak for themselves. Following in their wake came a procession of many of New Zealand’s best and most original bands in any generation: The Skeptics, High Dependency Unit, The Able Tasmans, The Bats, Bird Nest Roys, The 3Ds, The Verlaines, JPSE, Straightjacket Fits, Headless Chickens, Bailter Space and many many more. Roger Shepherd sold a shareholding in the company to Mushroom Records in the mid ‘90s, and then in 1999 handed over completely when he went to live in England. Upon his return, he was asked to work on compiling a back catalogue for Flying Nun, and in doing so discovered music he’d near forgotten about. The task was lengthy, but reacquainting himself with the material got him thinking. “The process was good, it reacquainted me with all sorts of things actually – good memories, a lot of people, faces, just really reconnecting with the label and the whole musical history, really,” he says. “Then I just started running into the people that were in those bands, and I guess reconnecting with old friends… and then I started thinking about trying to buy it back. “Really I underestimated the amount of work that needed to go into it to sort the whole thing out. But it was the right thing to do and it’s gotta be done… it’s gotta be done.” But he’s realistic about the demands of a new generation: “It can’t just be a reissue thing. An important part will always be that, but the thing that drives it forward is signing new artists, making new recordings and finding the best way of selling those.”

no love lost “IT SEEMS THEY’RE on the cusp of bigger things — perhaps one of NZ’s best kept musical secrets within the rock genre.” That’s what Groove Guide had to say when Decortica first came through the press and they’re sure to remind you of it. Two years of relentless self-promotion has certainly changed their best-kept secret status. The prog-rock band were recently hunted down by EMI who signed their second album Love Hotel, and are about to embark on a tour of Japan. Matthew Bosher originally started Decortica with his brother. “It was really forged out of the guitar and percussive-oriented rock that was pretty prevalent in the ‘90s and so on,” he says. “That’s when I learnt to play guitar actually, and also started writing songs in that vein, and I’ve always enjoyed the dynamics of a three-piece. This year has seen a lot of development for the Decortica enterprise, if you like, and we’re now signed to Mushroom Music Publishing and EMI.” The band is fascinated by Japan, a source of inspiration for their recent album. Bosher says, “Love Hotel is a concept based against the backdrop of Tokyo or Japanese urban nightlife. Love hotels themselves are pay-by-the-half-hour fantastical dens where people can have sexual encounters in weird and wonderful ways.” The band was intrigued by the interesting social function of the love hotel. “It became a really interesting theatre stage on which to place some interesting characters and to write a rock album about,” says Bosher. “And now to be touring and playing those songs in Japan – it’s exciting. A thematic homecoming perhaps?” Asked further about the theatrical aspects, Bosher said Decortica are fairly transparent. “People get a good insight into the thoughts and feelings of the band and around touring and recording,” he says. “We created a blog around the time that we recorded Love Hotel so people
could get an insight into what it all meant. That said, the lyrics themself, like the music, are fairly dense but entirely observational. There’s no sort of didactic message whatsoever – it’s just a sense of theatre really, a narrative, lots of interesting characters coming and going – very much just a collage of the weird and wonderful activities in that setting. We try and show people what we’re all about, but at the same time people can take what they will.” Decortica are a sonically edgy act with a dark atmosphere about them. Bassist Antoinette Lee says, “I don’t think we set out to be dark and heavy, we go about writing music that we like to play and that we ourselves would like to listen to. Each time we start writing more tracks or when we start working on the next album, it’ll be more about exploring new tones and textures and seeing what else we can do with what we know.” Drummer Tory Staples adds, “It’s about challenging ourselves as well. Just watching Matt work – he’ll come up with a riff, then he’ll rethink what he’s just played and then strip it back and put it back together. So it’s a challenge, sort of stepping up, every time.” Bosher says the most important thing for Decortica is to be interesting. “I think that’s our goal more than anything,” he says. “So whether that takes us down a darker route or whether it will be more uplifting, it’s neither here nor there. That’s the guiding.” Decortica’s explorative structures make them an accessible band for anyone who lends their own ears to rock. Their album is out now so be sure to get in on NZ’s best kept prog-rock secret before Japan snaps it all up.

GAMING
PLAYSTATION SHOWCASE a look at upcoming goodies for sony’s ps3 Attending the Playstation event last week was also a good excuse to get to see the Puma Social Club before it was dismantled. I’m glad (and not surprised) to say that both did not disappoint. The highly anticipated Unchartered 3 fronted the showcase. I managed to get a fair bit of time on the PS3 version, equipped with my fancy 3D glasses. The new technology of this device assists the game in achieving some stunning visuals (but more on that later). With or without the glasses, there’s little doubt that this game will continue the fine tradition of the Unchartered franchise and be a star for Sony. Many other games were on offer, as well as music from Che Fu, King Kapisi and Annah Mac, beers from Burger Fuel and copious other drinks. But there were two showstoppers for me at the event that look sure to lead the way in personal gaming. Firstly, arise the PS Vita taking the crown from the PSP. With front and rear touchpads, a high-res OLED screen, SIXAXIS motion sensor technology, dual analog sticks and front and rear cameras which can incorporate augmented reality gaming, this neat little package has set the bar. It scores bonus points for coming in your choice of Wifi or 3G/Wifi models, for being lighter than an iPhone and for having a bigger screen. Mega bonus point for the simple idea of being able to remotely save
your game. Without a doubt it will be a small matter of time until smartphone technology is bundled in with it as well. The other out-there experience was the HMZ-T1 Personal 3D viewer. This is a headset that reminded me of the virtual reality ones of old, but rolling with the high demands of modern day gamers (such as having your own adjustable straps and headphones built in). When it hits the market, it will be able to offer 3D home cinema experiences as well as 3D games. While I tried out a 3D game on offer and ended up grinning like a little kid, that same little kid was bummed that no one else could see that I just came first. But the pros of this device certainly round it off so that virtual reality is greater than my childlike ego. Another cool demo was the dual-view 3D. This gives you the possibility of playing a game on the same TV and seeing different images without having to do split screen. I’d only heard about this technology before, and now having experienced it it’s safe to say that it has the potential to redefine how we play against each other on the same screen. These new interactive products aren’t on the shelves yet, but they’re definitely things we’ll be talking more about when they hit stores in February. album reviews Lou Reed & Metallica Lulu
ALBUM OF THE WEEK
llll
Lou Reed and Metallica collaborating isn’t something you’d expect, ever. Lulu is the musical love child of Metallica and Reed’s performance of Velvet Underground tracks back at the 25th anniversary of the Rock ‘n’ Roll hall of fame in 2009. Reed took a walk on the wild side and I really want to like it. There is a lot that goes in the album’s favour; to start with, Reed’s song writing is always elaborate and poetic. It’s layered with aggressive spoken word vocals intertwined with Metallica’s filthy sound, making for interesting listening.

New Zealand’s Miss duet and nudie-airplane-ads of 2009 Gin Wigmore returns with second album Gravel & Wine. Written in the States, this album is an exploration of vice, naughtiness and difference pretty awesome really. It’s an upbeat fusion of blues and motown. ‘Kill Of The Night’ gets the bass thumping, with particularly frightful lyrics about man hunting and blood-tasting. Catchy hooks and stompy beats characterise most of this album; fun drips from it everywhere. Wigmore shows a softer, more emotional side in motowny piano-led ballad ‘If Only’ and violin tearjerker ‘Saturday Smile’. That husky voice is as strong as ever and you just know a hatchback full of girls is going to drive past in the near future with ‘Dirty Love’ breaking the speakers while they “sing” like her. ‘Sweet Hell’ reeks of Edward Sharpe’s ‘Home’. It’s a genuinely likeable album — can’t really argue with that.
Hard-working Auckland noisemongers Rule of Thieves freshly released EP Silhouette has been highly anticipated. The first thing that hits you is the sheer presence of their sonic assault. Multi-layered guitars howl and scratch an erratic rhythm as singer Rory Hart does some howling of his own. Over the course of this four-track EP, chunky menacing riffs are stacked haphazardly on top of each other threatening to spill over. First song ‘Champagne’ hits hard like Deftones at their heavy best while ‘Dead Awake’ taps into a more ethereal vein. ‘Paper Envy’ stands on the precipice of full-blown screamo before retreating back into serenity. The album is heavy but carefree like so many great hard rock acts of the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Rule Of Thieves have come a long way from their humble bedroom beginnings, and Silhouette is likely only a taste of grander things to come.
I’ve always liked Jane’s Addiction. Their artsy take on punk rock was fresh once and they were cool. This album is Jane’s Addiction through and through. Your ears prick up in the first ten seconds of ‘Underground’ with an “okay, cool, I’ve heard this before,” reaction. That’s the rap sheet right there really — they still sound the same. A lot of established bands get a bit of flak from their more protective fans for change and I’d be surprised if that crowd draws rapiers here. The only new thing is the addition of TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek, which on reflection occasionally shows through in a stronger rhythm. The Great Escape slips nicely into the back catalogue, much nicer than Farrell and Navarro’s shenanigans in the last few years do at any rate. A fantastic metaphysics-bending floaty trip to space out to after a rough night at the cloudy mind circus.

There’s tons of press already out on this, yet few seem to have made the connection on the title: this is clearly Adam’s “phoenix rising”. The obsessive-compulsive composer quit The Cardinals, and indeed all music in 2009 due to complications with Ménière’s disease (a disorder of the inner ear affecting hearing and balance). But with encouragement from his new wife Mandy Moore, he’s begun a steady recovery. Previously, his best work focused on the post-break-up blues, but here Adams seems more content to play with the inner workings of a living relationship, as evident on the tender ode to loyalty ‘Come Back Home’ (ft. Moore and Norah Jones on BV), and the soulful ‘Kindness’. ‘Chains Of Love’ inspects the ties that keep couples connected through the rough patches. This album proves that love is suiting Adams well; it’s the kind of focused masterpiece that we all hold out for, unplugged treasures to play over and over, forever. Amen. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

The testosterone overload is regulated by first person female song characters, most notably in the opener ‘Brandenburg Gate’. At times, though, Reed overburdens himself by trying to carry his voice along with the riot that is Metallica. It’s a quirky and dark amble into Reed’s always shocking mindmystery, and it just so happens Metallica came along for the ride.

British TV comedies have a disappointing pedigree when stretched to big-screen length. Harry Enfield’s Kevin & Perry Go Large was 90 minutes too large, Rik Mayall’s much-loved Bottom became flabby beyond belief, and Ali G Indahouse really should have stayed there. Sitcoms rely on simple, claustrophobic situations,

advancing years are a highlight, and kudos to Theo Barklem-Biggs for nearly stealing the show as a brain-fried club casualty. Though it was hardly subtle to begin with, there was something alluringly intimate about the TV show that evaporates in the Malia sun. As a standalone six-pack flick The Inbetweeners movie is fine, but as the epilogue to one of the best British sitcoms ever it is, perhaps inevitably, a letdown.

Paranormal Activity 3
Found-footage horrors tend to elicit groans from me, the allure to producers seemingly only due to low costs and misplaced ideas about their ‘coolness’. With Paranormal Activity 3, though, this stylistic conceit is a given, although shifting the setting to the ‘80s and replacing shitty digital cameras with VHS seemed at first to be an unnecessary stretch. Then again, this is a prequel and it actually ends up being a relief that we don’t have to spend another 90 minutes with the same small cast of actors. Not that there’s a hell of a lot of tinkering with the formula, with the bulk of the film taking place in a house with scary shit happening to a few key people.

so when writers dream up outlandish, fish-out-of-water plots to fill time they’re more far-fetched and less funny. TVtrained directors, meanwhile, often try so hard to be ‘cinematic’ that they burst the bubble of believability. Based on tales of schoolyard mortification and sexual misadventure in suburban
London, The Inbetweeners makes all of these mistakes and more in its expanded format, but scrapes by on past glories. A bubble-burstingly expensive helicopter/crane shot quickly introduces the gang – uptight Will (Bird), lovelorn Simon (Thomas), braggart Jay (Buckley) and dimwit Neil (Harrison) – before they’re whipped off to Malia, Crete, for some fish-out-of-water lads’ shenanigans. Mostly this involves them incompetently romancing a group of inexplicably beguiled girls, slapdash plotting and endless shots of extras dancing, although there are enough cringe-making knob gags to hold the attention. Neil’s sexual encounters with a lady of
This time the directors of Catfish are calling the shots and do a great job of replicating the spatial awareness and repetition of its predecessors. These are critical elements of all three films infusing an anxiety level that primes the audience for some pretty simple scares and heightens their impact. Catfish showed that these guys can assemble a story from a bunch of ordinary-looking footage and here they do just that. Getting the simple things right each year is working for this franchise, rather than becoming ever more elaborate. Unless you count bolting a camera to an oscillating fan base so it can pan left and right. Nice one, MacGyver. WRITTEN BY STEVE NEWALL, Flicks.co.nz
Neither a complete clanger nor a lost classic, Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire-next-door flick is the latest inexplicable entry on Hollywood’s recycling list. Set in a Las Vegas housing estate of such crushing uniformity it could use a little vamping up, Craig Gillespie’s snazzy 3D update begins with local kids going missing from school. Charlie (Yelchin), his girlfriend, Amy (Poots), and nerdy tag-along Ed (Mintz-Plasse) suspect it’s something to do with Charlie’s neighbour, Jerry (Farrell). “That’s a terrible name for a vampire,” says Charlie sagely, but can he stop Mr Creepy from shagging his mum (Collette) – or worse? First and foremost among Fright Night 2011’s assets are its talented players, most of
them foriegners pretending to be American. Yelchin (Russian) has an engaging outsider charm, Poots (English) has balls to spare and when Mintz-Plasse takes a (literal) early bath the film really misses him. Farrell (Irish), meanwhile, enjoys himself as a preening sex-pest gibbering on about how “ripe” Amy is. It’s not a scary performance, but you definitely wouldn’t want him dating your sister. Although the murky visuals stop the 3D scenes zinging off the screen, there’s a whizzy car chase and some wellchoreographed kills – enough to complement the performances and put this among the more entertaining reworkings of recent years. Finding The Cowl Batman: Year One review The geek-con that is Armageddon brings out the pale-faces and other unfair stereotypes that we give to the subculture of comic readers, gamers, cosplayers and other nerdy, geeky con-goers. The convention has its ups and downs every year. One of the ups of this year’s had to have been the premiere screening of Batman: Year One. The story is lifted pretty much directly from Frank Miller’s comic of the same name. Even the layman may recognise Miller’s name on the creator credits of Sin City or 300 as well as his directorial debut with The Spirit. While some of those are hit and miss, the writer knows comics as a medium much better than anything else he’s dabbled in. He wasn’t the director of the animated adaptation of Batman: Year One, but his story is still there and has been lifted extremely well. The premise of Year One is simple. Bruce Wayne has finished his years of training under Shaolin Monks and gurus and whatnot, and has returned to his home city of Gotham wondering what to do next. He doesn’t yet know he will take up the mantle of the bat, and he’s struggling to find his place in this dark world with all of the physical and mental talents he now possesses. It’s a fantastic insight to see him discover how he finds the cowl and instils fear in the hearts of criminals. Seeing
him get into fights before he dons the mask and cape is fun (especially when a very young prostitute stabs him). It’s also interesting to see another voice actor take up the role, as the infamous Kevin Conroy is absent in this flick. But Year One is almost more of Jim Gordon’s story. A hero cop who has been transferred to Gotham, Lieutenant Jim Gordon has a baby on the way and can’t believe his luck when he’s stuck in the corrupt, criminal city. Voiced by none other than Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jim shines as the hero and protagonist much more so than the titular character. His is the struggle we follow. His fights are the ones we root for. His failures are the ones we forgive. With a running time of around 60 minutes, the storytelling has neither been squashed nor squandered. It’s a mixed tale with a collective of short stories that make up everything that you would want to see in Batman’s first year discovering who he is. There’s no super-powered element – it’s just a crime story. An original crime story that doubles as an origin story. Frank Miller’s comic was a hit, and it’s great to see that the animated version has delivered so well. Best of all you don’t need to be familiar with the characters to enjoy the story, which is the make of any good film. Written by Summer Thernomme
