Shit worth announcing

Breaking news The New Zealand International Arts Festival is the gift that keeps on giving. Death Cab For Cutie has just been announced to play at the inaugural festival, much to the delight of just about anyone who likes music.

Announcements Bridges and Broken Hearts

Bond Street Bridge just can’t seem to sit still. It wasn’t enough that they toured around the country in the big cities, the small regionals and everything in between, so they’ve announced another 10date tour with buddies in arms The Broken Heart Breakers who have just returned from playing shows in Europe for a year.

The Ben Gibbard fronted quartet has been one of the most influential alt and indie rock groups since the band’s conception back in 1997. Death Cab are also playing shows in Australia, but those have sold out quicker than bottled water in the Sahara. The one-off New Zealand show will be held at the Wellington Town Hall on Wednesday 29 February, following the two Bon Iver shows (also part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival). Tickets are available from Thursday 22 December through Ticketek and range in price from $38 plus booking fee and upwards for those slightly better seats. And on that note, we’ll be back in the new year with more good news to get you in your groove. Groove Guide is New Zealand’s leading weekly music and entertainment publication. 10,000 free copies are available every week at music stores, cafes, fast food outlets, nightclubs, bars, restaurants, cinemas and retail stores throughout New Zealand. The bands will play throughout January to early February in Nelson, Wairau Valley, Christchurch, Oamaru, Dunedin, Greymouth, Wellington, Paekakariki and Auckland. Special guests joining the bands along the way include Delaney Davidson, John White, Matt Langley, Rosy Tin Teacaddy and Luckless.

Our pick

Put the Men in Feminine

Brooklyn art/performance collective Men have announced one very rare performance at Auckland’s 4:20 in February.

In House Party

A new creative initiative has unofficially launched with some big things coming up in the future. In House Auckland will be opening up at Number 4 Gallery on Cross Street, just of Auckland’s K Road. Working in conjunction with First Thursdays and the New Zealand Fashion Festival, the official In house launch party kicks off on Thursday 01 March and will feature local and international artists, designers and musicians.

While the group might not sound too familiar, you’ll be more aware of the artists-cum-band than you realise. Fronted by JD Samson (Le Tigre, The Herms), the collective includes Michael O’Neill (Hirsute), Johanna Fateman (Le Tigre) and concept artist Emily Roysdon among others. Proud Mary and Strange News are bringing Men in February, but that’s not the only good news.

The full line-up of exhibitors and performers will be announced in mid-January, but in the mean time keep your eyeholes and earballs out for the In House Auckland Launch Party, Pop Up Shop & Exhibition: Space is the Place at Number 4 Gallery. Look for In House Creative Projects on Facebook for more info. The curators will be actively looking for artists, volunteers and exhibitors in January.

Spring Break will be supporting the Brooklyn-based art-house at the oneoff show. Spring Break being the duo of Ryan McPhun (The Ruby Suns) and James Dansey (The Sneaks). New Zealand born but Sydney-based DJ and artist Fanny Burney will also be featuring on the night.

Fools in April

Get your androgyny on for this very rare performance. Tickets are on sale now from Under The Radar.

April will see the welcome return of post-psych outs Wooden Shjips. Auckland’s Kings Arms and Wellington’s Bodega will host the try-and-define-them progressive/psych/fusion rockers who have been steadily building their fanbase with limited physical releases all leading up to their latest album West. The quartet will play in Auckland on Sunday 01 April and in the capital on Monday 02 April. Tickets for both shows are available now through Cheese On Toast, Under The Radar or from Real Groovy.

Making the world dance

One of the latest pop sensations has announced her first ever New Zealand show. Jessie J will be performing one show at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Tuesday 28 February. The self-described Disney-chic singer has made gained some serious popularity over the past year, and after beginning her career as a songwriter for the likes of Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus, that credit is well due. Her debut single ‘Do It Like a Dude’ was released in late 2010 and garnered her international fame and saw her land several top ten spots on charts around the world. Despite only having one album, Jessie J has of course been likened to the new wave of female pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj et al. Clearly the singer isn’t content with just one career, as she is also a coach and mentor on television show The Voice UK. This will be the first time for Kiwi fans to see her locally. Tickets go on sale Friday 23 December through Ticketmaster.

A Return from the Grave

Irish chart-toppers The Cranberries have announced one New Zealand show next year. The band with the banshee beat raised children of the ‘90s and have sold over 30 million records worldwide. They also sing that song ‘Zombie’ which is about as infectious as the undead themselves.

After a six-year hiatus, the four-piece reunited last year and toured the world while working on new music. Next year will see the release of The Cranberries’ sixth album Roses, and to celebrate they’ll be hitting the spots they’ve missed so very much after their break. Auckland will be treated to one show on Thursday 15 March at The Trusts Stadium. Tickets are on sale now through Ticket Direct.

Shit Worth Knowing

20 Years of Comedy

It’ll be a Blue Monday

Some thirty years on and they’re still going strong. Out of the ashes of Joy Division rose the Phoenix that is New Order, a band that has been called one of the most important and iconic bands in history, one of the most critically acclaimed, influential, and aesthetically noted artists of our time and winners of NME’s Godlike Genius award. Now the band has announced one show in New Zealand for February next year. The touring five-piece will play at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Monday 27 February in an all-ages (but still licensed) event with the line-up of Bernard Sumner on vocals

The 2012 NZ International Comedy Festival has been announced. Next year will see the 20th anniversary of the country’s biggest LOL factory, formerly known as the Laugh! Festival. While acts haven’t yet been announced, we do know that the festival will be taking place from Friday 27 April to Sunday 20 May in Auckland and Wellington. Tickets to the Auckland Comedy Gala and Wellington’s First Laughs will go on sale Thursday 01 March, with general tickets available from Thursday 08 March. and guitar, Stephen Morris on drums, Gillian Gilbert and Phil Cunningham on dual keyboard and guitar responsibilities and Tom Chapman on bass. Odds are this will be the last opportunity for most Kiwis to see New Order. Tickets are on sale now from Ticketmaster and Real Groovy.

Harder said than done A new festival has been announced to take place in mid-January just north of Auckland. What’s been auspiciously touted as the latest good times festival in the calibre of camp A Low Hum, Chronophonium is the latest endeavour to bring bands together for “a super special time and place for the freest of spirits to thrive”. The three day festival kicks off on Friday 13 January and runs through to Sunday 15 January. A farm has been hired up in Pataua North, just shy of a beach settlement near Whangarei and roughly twoand-a-half hours out of Auckland. Organisers say “We’re starting with plenty of grass, some trees and a nearby golden beach and adding a diverse range of up & comers in the local music scene, artists, a food and craft market, a special blend of metaphorical herbs and spices and a sprinkling of sun”. So far the line-up includes Argyle Raver, Beach Pigs, Chewie Lewis, Deer Park, Fleet Truck, Forest Spirits, Headspins, Lion Eyes, Meese, Monoceros, Rackets and Poor You, Poor Me. The festival opens up for camping from 4:30pm on the Friday at Besson Farm, 1652 Pataua North Road. Chronophonium is a restricted event to those 18 and over. Tickets are available now through Under The Radar.

Cassette Requiems Auckland venue Cassette Nine has hooked up with Big Day Out organisers to initiate the Cassette Live Art Installation at next year’s BDO. If you’re the artistic type (much to your parents’ dismay) then this should be right up your alley. Most any piece of work can be submitted as long as they are inspired by the iconic festival’s 20th anniversary. Whether this is an act that has played over the past 20 years, that special song you fell in love with at the green stage or even that time you took too much acid and tried to climb the loop de loop to get a better look at Bjork, the Cassette crew wants to see it all. Hit up Cassette on Facebook or email art@cassettenine.com with a bit of bio about yourself, some

examples of your work and a rough sketch of your vision of the installation you would want to be a part of the big day.

A Long Time Coming Arguably the world’s first supergroup, Crosby, Stills and Nash has often been called the voice of a generation. Except that generation is now old and need ear-amplifiers or whatever they’re called. But they still know how to party. Good thing too, as David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash have announced one New Zealand show next year. Following all the yoof summer-and-then-some shows through to March, the wrinklier generation can get down at Auckland’s Trusts Stadium on Saturday 24 March. Maybe the stabs at the geriatrics are a bit unfair. Sorry to the Marthas, Evelyns and

Garths out there. You go back to watching Downton Abbey. But take five minutes out of your schedule to pick up some tickets from Ticket Direct.

SUNDAY 25 DECEMBER Christmas & Other Holidays

gig OF THE WEEK

Probably Your Aunt’s House

Everywhere So yeah, it’s Christmas time and other holidays as well. There’s not much on in the way of gigs, but what does it matter – you’re stuffing your face with chicken and ham and potato salad and buns and sausages and that real nice salad that your cousin makes from that recipe she got from that naturopath years ago. It’s been a big year for you. You were telling yourself you were going to be on the up and

up this year, and it didn’t quite work out that way but you still had fun. There were ups and downs. There was a bit of love and a bit of loss. That’s what growing up is, kids. So get the family stuff done today, try to act interested in what your younger cousins are doing and don’t be the drunk one at the family Christmas thing. Don’t drive drunk either. Play it safe today of all days. Because from this week on, the real parties begin.

It makes sense that Elijah Wood is a penguin. Doesn’t it? It totally does. Kids just go crazy over Happy Feet. Like, The Shining crazy. You might as well, but you also might hold some animosity towards Robin Williams. That’s fine. Do the little ones a solid and take them to see this and you’ll be their favourite.

Exodus 2012

gig OF THE WEEK

Anywhere

Te Tumu Kaituna 14 Reserve, Tauranga

12pm, $70-130, eventfinder.co.nz

Reggae By Nature is putting on this year’s Exodus 2012 festival at the Te Tumu Kaituna 14 Reserve in Papamoa. The likes of Katchafire, House Of Shem, 1814, Ardijah, Sons Of Zion, 3 Houses Down, Foundation, Tomorrow People, NRG Rising, Vintage, Chad Cahmbers and DJ Hemz with Te Hamua Nikora are on the line-up.

Maybe you don’t want to go and see music at a bar or a festival. Hey, that’s totally fine. Maybe you just want to hang out with all your friends or go wherever that guy/gal you’re crushing on is, so you can try and get a sneaky pash on the countdown. Or maybe you’ve already got that special someone to lock lips with. Maybe you’re just going to go to your local bar and see what’s going on there. Hey, saves you money, right? Or maybe you’re only 12 and you’re not allowed to go party. That’s understandable. Maybe you’re broke after buying Christmas presents. Maybe you have to work in the morning. Whatever. Sometimes winging it works. So don’t forget that there are some amazing shows right through to February. Who says New Year’s has to be the biggest night?

House of Shem Mangawhai Tavern

8pm, $40, eventfinder.co.nz

There’s a House of Shem video online that was made on someone who works at Groove Guide’s birthday. This came up because the nameless person writing this didn’t have enough coffee and didn’t know what to write about House of Shem other than they’re a reggae band, so we looked at a video on YouTube. True story.

The Feelers

Beyond The Black

Papamoa Tavern

Trentham racecourse, lower hutt 2pm, $69, eventfinder.co.nz

10am, $50-150, 1-night.co.nz

The Feelers have sold over 250,000 albums. There are something like 4 million people in the country. Which means that roughly one in sixteen people in the country have bought a Feelers album. That’s not counting international sales. So out of 16 people, maybe one of them will be at the Pap’ Tav’ on New Year’s. Maths!

Head Like a Hole, Shotgun Alley, In Dread Response, Sinate, Devilskin, Decortica, Indicator Dogs, Subtract, Whole Lotta Led, Tainted, Sonic Altar, Depths, Advocates, Bulletbelt, Of Blackest Oceans and Draco Aerius fill up the night of New Year’s metal at Wellington’s Bodega. Is this where all the headbangers will be hiding from all the reggae-heads?

The Phoenix Foundation

Highlife

Foxglove

Matakana Country Park 4pm, $85-105, iticket.co.nz

8pm, $50, dashtickets.co.nz

So if dub, reggae, roots, dance, trance, house, drum’n’bass or some wider variation of that isn’t your thing, then why not just take a chill pill and go see The Phoenix Foundation and The Nudge? No, it’s not the giant party that you thought you would have, but it’s good music and teenagers won’t be throwing up on you. That might be a bit of a generalisation, but I’m old and jealous of kids being able to party for longer than me.

The Britomart Country Club

8pm, $20, Door Sales Only

I have a photo of Sam Harvey from Computers Want Me Dead holding a chainsaw to my neck. The chainsaw isn’t on, we were just goofing around. But that chainsaw just happened to show up at my house one day and Sam really took a liking to it. Whoever lost a chainsaw back in 2009 – maybe it was yours.

Sherlock Holmes 2

Selected Cinemas

General Release

Gus Van Sant is back at it again. He’s had some huge winners with Milk, Good Will Hunting and Elephant, and some flops like the God-awful Psycho remake starring Vince Vaughn. With his latest telling the tale of a terminally ill girl falling in love featuring ghost Japanese kamikaze pilots, how will Restless turn out?

Guy Ritchie seems to have dropped the multiplotline stylisation that found him his fame. While the first Sherlock Holmes was nothing but a blockbuster, most people will give Robert Downey Jr. the time of day on any given occasion. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows stars RDJ, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace and Stephen Fry.

Dolphins are just the monkeys of the sea. Why? Because monkeys are fucking awesome and dolphins are pretty damn cool as well. Remember Ecco the Dolphin? That little guy was great. Let’s hope that a movie based on a true story about a dolphin that lost its tail starring Morgan Freeman is just as great.

Can you imagine Willem Dafoe in any role where you’re meant to think he’s a good guy? He looks like a lizard. It’s a pretty sure bet that he can catch flies with his tongue, which is good since he’s a mercenary stuck in the Tasmanian outback in this flick. Damn good actor though.

Artificial Intelligence pop over from London to headline the night of Liquid Recreation at Coherent, with NZ’s golden girl of drum’n’bass Emma G on support alongside MC Tali, Lobo and Solkai. If you feel like a quiet peek next door you’ll find The Scratch Perverts controlling Ink on their trip from the UK.

It’s been a while since ska has been the sound of the moment, but for all those ska-heads that just can’t let go, some good news is in store for you with Bad Manners. We’re not sure if there is such a thing as shock-ska, but if there is – these guys are the godfathers of it.

Selected Cinemas

Black Barn Vineyard, Havelock North

6pm, $68, ticketmaster.co.nz

Every time we see that The Room is playing, we’re going to put it in this list. Anyone who’s seen it will know why. It is simply one of the worst films ever made. And it’s brilliant. Tommy Wiseau’s accidental flop-cum-meme plays at the Rialto in Dunedin and The Paramount Theatre in the capital.

New Zealand’s biggest septet Fat Freddy’s Drop takes to Havelock North’s Black Barn Vineyard with The Nudge on support, following the New Year’s gigging both of the bands will have been doing. Just in case you didn’t get all of that skanking out of your system over summer, head here for round two.

Shit worth doing

THURSDAY 12 JANUARY

FRIDAY 13 JANUARY

War Horse

Fleet Foxes

Selected Cinemas

Dunedin Town Hall

gig OF THE WEEK 7.30pm, $75, ticketek.co.nz

One of Stephen Spielberg’s less talked about recent endeavours, War Horse has a fresh face in newcomer Jeremy Irvine who wants to rescue his horse from the battlefields of the First World War. We all know Spielberg does war drama damn well, so there’s potential for this one to be very good.

Last time Fleet Foxes played in New Zealand back in 2009, tears flooded the carpets of Auckland’s Bruce Mason Theatre and Wellington’s San Fran Bath House. We can only assume that a couple of years later the band will still pull on the old heartstrings and get the manliest of men weeping some sweet folk-tears.

The Darkest Hour

Chronophonium

Selected Cinemas

Besson Farm, Patua

4.30pm, $37, undertheradar.co.nz

An alien invasion flick with a difference, The Darkest Hour sees a bunch of good-lookin’ American kids in Russia when aliens attack. And by good-lookin’, we mean Olivia Thirby, Emile Hirsch and Rachael Taylor. Them’s some good-lookin’ yanks in alien-occupied Russia running from lasers and whatnot.

Meese, Rackets, Lion Eyes, Headspins, Deer Park, Beach Pigs, Monoceros, Fleet Truck, Chewie Lewis, Argyle Raver, Forest Spirits and Poor You Poor Me all feature over the two days of the very first Chonophonium. How can you possibly top a cheap two-day music festival in the grass and by a beach?

Tune-yards

The Palace of Burlesque

The Kings Arms

University of Canterbury 8pm, $30, undertheradar.co.nz

8pm, $25-39, theloons.co.nz

Hot damn, finally Merrill makes her merry way here. The one-off show that nobody was expecting to be announced got announced, and we threw a miniparty in the office. This year has been tUnE-yArDs year as she has managed to put out some of the catchiest experimental pop songs we’ve ever heard. Bring this show the hell on.

The Loons Circus Theatre Company’s upcoming burlesque show Hanussen – The Palace of Burlesque runs from Wed 04 Jan through to Sat 14 Jan. Keep in mind that this type of show isn’t for everyone, but those that like their punch to be spiked and use words like kinky, saucy and naughty may enjoy the ride.

SATURDAY 14 JANUARY Fuse Circus

Beirut

Village Green, Paihia

Town Hall 8pm, $55, undertheradar.co.nz

2pm or 8pm, $5-10, Door sales

Who could have possibly guessed that the demand to see Beirut was so high? The Wellington show originally sold out in a matter of days, followed swiftly by the Powerstation show in Auckland also filling seats fast. Now that the Wellington venue has changed there are a few more tickets up for grabs, but get in quick.

The last day of the Fuse Circus Campground Chaos wraps up two weeks of twirling rings and rope spinning and juggling and mimes and puppetry and bears in carts and all that usual circus jazz. Just because it’s in a campground doesn’t make it any less of a circus. It makes it a little scarier though.

The last day of the Heineken Open goes down in Auckland as we’re treated to two of the top 10 players in the world face off against each other. That’s actually really premature as this is being written in mid-December, so maybe it’s unknown facing each other. Who knows. But tennis is cool.

“I have many wives – musically that is,” quips Tommy Lee. He’s kicking back on his tour bus, parked on the outskirts of Detroit, Michigan; taking a few calls and mixing some beats in his makeshift studio set up in the back. For a man with a police record, alimony demands and a cliché history of rock debauchery, he’s coming over pretty laid back and professional. Currently on tour with electro-genius Deadmau5, Lee is enjoying playing to an intensely critical club crowd with his musical partner Aero. “It’s a kind of pilot/co-pilot working relationship,” he says. “Aero lays down the beats and I do the visuals, some drums and some native instrumentations [referring to guitar, drum and piano licks].” General Admission may not be familiar with this side of the notorious drummer of ‘80s legends Mötley Crüe, but Lee claims he’s always been a closet dance music fan. “Y’know, every drum solo I’ve played live has some loops or beats, and I’ve used samples for as long as I can remember.” DJing is a far cry from the roller coaster drum solos of his act with the Crüe, but his love of invention still comes through. “Studios are way different now, too,” he muses. “Originally I’d be in there, like 24 hours to get one rhythm track down. Thousands of hours and dollars! Thing is, with a laptop I can record anywhere now. You know, I just completed a track all the way through, while sitting on a commercial flight across the States. And another on a charter. Insane!” Back in ‘99, Lee cobbled together rap-rock-metal act Methods of Mahem (MOM) with a host of an unusual suspects: Beastie Boys’ Mix

Master Mike, Fred Durst, Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan (The Crystal Method), Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, Li’L Kim and even George Clinton. “At that time I was bored,” he reflects. “I heard stuff in the clubs and was inspired to switch musical gears, create, freak out. I left [Mötley Crüe] for a bit to explore, you know? I’m always hungry for good music. That’s why I agreed to do stuff like [reality show] Rock Star Supernova. Mainstream TV was so dull, music was dull. Shit like American Idol. I’ve always had this mix-it-up philosophy: Keep it movin!” That was the agenda behind MOM; to shatter the preconceived ideas notions of what popular music. Eventually AERO took a spot on the MOM tour and instantly formed a bond with Lee. Both have been collaborating on a menu of dirty, annihilating beats and searing hot riffs since. DJ AERO (aka Chester Deitz) sharpened his incisors on the early ‘90s LA rave scene spinning hip-hop discs, inspired by DJ Jazzy Jeff, Barry Weaver, Doc Martin, and eventually joined West Coast crew The Heavyweights, a collective featuring DJs for Snoop Dog, Everlast, KORN and Dilate Peoples. This New Year’s Eve Lee and AERO will headline the new Earthtonz Music Festival near Gibbston Valley Winery in Queenstown, along with Crystal Method, DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), The Freestylers, Heatbox and Minuit. Lee is pumped about the location. I Googled it – it looks frigging amazing. You better be ready to party - bring your hi-heel Nikes!

If 2011 has been one musician’s breakaway year, it’s safe to say Merrill Garbus, AKA tUnE-yArDs can take that award home. This year saw the release of her sophomore effort w h o k i l l which stole the hearts of critics and opened up a fresh new fanbase for the New England native. And no one has been more surprised about that reception more than the artist herself. “I’ve been really stunned by the response to the album,” says Merrill. “During the recording process I really had to keep my head down and focus on finishing the album. Anytime I thought about what people were expecting, or what might happen with the music after I finished it, I would get farther and farther away from feeling good about the work.” One of her most popular songs ‘Gangsta’ has been a top ten hit on radio stations, blogs and audience playlists around the globe. It’s by far the best representation of Merrill’s meticulous production, but also gave her a lesson in mixing 101. “When I first started mixing the album myself, I was using software that I didn’t understand... In fact, that was the most time-consuming thing.”

Did it ever become a chore? “Albums just take a long time, and at a certain point you wish you never had to listen to a song ever again. I programmed some of the drum patters on ‘Gangsta’ and that took a long time... But that’s not a chore, that’s the nitty gritty of the work which makes me want to get up in the morning.” As well as being one of the new underdog darlings of the critic’s-choice scene, Merrill has been an active voice in the wider Occupy movements. “It’s one of the first times I can remember in my lifetime that people are taking this kind of initiative to change the systems around them. The ‘80’s and ‘90’s in the US were pretty complacent times in this country, specifically for middle-class white folks, which was the world I grew up in.” But her time in New Zealand will be less political and more experiential. While she promises to learn more about the country before she arrives, Merrill says she’s excited to learn about Maori culture. Other than that, she knows we’re “an island way, way down there”. I say that the best way to learn more would be to get some Kiwi friends. She seems on board. “Yep, 2012 is the year of new friends, didn’t you hear?” So if you want to jump and play in the tune-yard, just use Merrill’s own advice and give her the ultimate friendship pick-up line: “You’re a badass.”

WRITTEN BY JIMMY HOWLETT SEE HER LIVE: TUNE-YARDS THU 12 JAN KINGS ARMS, AUCKLAND

Decked head-to-toe in black, pleats and frills aplenty, heavy eye shadow and plump red lipstick, thick bangs hang down over matching Silvertone guitars: the result is a unified troupe of cooler-thanthou young ladies, who really do look like they should be in a band. “Aesthetics have never been more important than the music I write and we play, but they have always been part of the deal,” says head honcho Dee Dee, otherwise known as Kristen Gundred. “My whole life I grew up idolising artists and bands who captivated [audiences] with their look and attitude as well as their music… more Ramones than Ronettes in terms of that.” Apt, then, that she should mention two geometrical and musical polar opposites, but the comparison sticks because it’s near impossible to even take a passing glance at all four Dum Dum Girls onstage and not think of a glorious age when Phil Spector’s groups ruled the charts with his confrontational and wildly successful formula: cute girls in tight dresses singing euphoric songs amidst a backdrop of sheer sonic indulgence. Formed in California nearly four years ago whilst Gundred was drumming for Grand Ole Party, Dum Dum Girls’ career has been marked by steady rises and expected progressions through the industry – albeit on Gundred’s own terms.

“I work at a pretty steady trajectory so it seems appropriate… I’m not looking to be a one-hit wonder or a trend that explodes and then dies. I want to make a life of this. Better to build a foundation and go from there.” Cue a deal with Sub Pop, surely a haven for genre-defying pop music. And it seems Dum Dum Girls have found a home they feel comfortable in, especially if Only In Dreams is anything to go by. Their second full-length hails Gundred’s sheer unabashed and uncontrollable talent as a songwriter; it simply spews forth soaring pop hit after soaring pop hit, each and every one coated in a shimmery, relentless, indeed Ramones-y sense of energy. But after three EPs and two albums’ worth of a trusted, tested formula, somebody must’ve told Gundred to stop for two seconds and rest, because ‘Coming Down’ – found somewhere close to the end of the album - is the musical accompaniment to a long, slow descent in to long-needed sleep, and by far her most accomplished track to date. On whether she’s looking forward to Dum Dum Girls reaching New Zealand shores, Gundred his optimistic. “Of course,” she says, “aside from the excitement that always accompanies playing a new city, I have such a romanticised, foreign, tropical idea of this region.” Needless to say, we’re looking forward to them landing just as much.

The year

When it gets to the end of the year, all you can ever think about is one thing – how damn quick it went. You were sure that there were some great memories, but for the life of you, you just can’t remember them. Is that irony? Or is irony SO 2010? These are the people and the memories that have made 2011 what it is in pop culture. The albums you’ve loved and the names you’ve heard. The lifespan of entertainment is short-lived and fickle, but notables have shaped the past year the way they have wanted. Our panel of contributors lay out their standout memories from 2011, and take joy in what they can before the world explodes in 2012. Thanks to Alexander Hallag (AH), Chris Pole (CP), James A. Robins (JAR), Jan Maree (JM), Justin Fowler (JF), Sam Wieck (SW) and Kevin Kartun (KK).

Album of the year This one’s going to have to go to Bon Iver for his self-titled album. The singer has managed to find his sound straight from the get go, and this year’s release has seen him up for several Grammy awards. No other artist has truly broken the mould and come forward with an album that seems to break all barriers and hit home with everyone who gives it a listen. But what else was worth your time this year? AH: Fabulous/Arabia’s Unlimited Buffet, Beastwars’ self-titled, Chris Connelly’s Artificial Madness, Kate Bush’s 50 Words for Snow. JAR: It’s a tough run between Bombay Bicycle Club’s A Different Kind Of Fix and The Horrors’ Skying. JF: Boy & Bear’s debut Moonfire, Mine Is Yours courtesy of Cold War, and Sinsin’s EP Layers earned its stay at my flats number one spot for a few weeks running. JM: The Adults, Tom Morello, Andrew Fagan, Ladi6. SW: Shannon and the Clams’ Sleep Talk keeps growing on me. KK: Thee Oh Sees’ Castlemania kills on every listen. Also King Lollipop’s debut blows my mind.

Film of the year If there’s been one film that has got everyone talking, it’s Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive. Someone could tell you the entire movie shot by shot and your mind would still have been blown. Let’s just hope that the team behind it didn’t take themselves too seriously, as it’s hard to imagine a funnier scene than getting your pash on in an elevator then stomping a man to death. AH: Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. CP: It’s been a wee bit lean this year, but Crazy Stupid Love was very clever. I’m looking forward to The Rum Diary, and am very pleased that Harry Potter is finally over. JAR: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the revamped Wuthering Heights (replete with heavensent Kaya Scodelario) look like scorchers. JM: Billy T: Te Movie and Jane Eyre. SW: Tyrannosaur. I’m assuming Dark Horse is going to be great, but I haven’t seen it yet. KK: Blue Valentine and True Grit.

Breakaway NZ artist If we’re talking locally, Beastwars have made metal more than it has ever been in this country. But by breakaway we mean someone who has truly broken through the barriers. Being in the bottom corner of the world is a big enough barrier as it is, but that didn’t stop one man from taking his music to the world. David Dallas gets the keys to the car that will drive him into the sunset as we await eagerly for the next chapter in his story. Sorry, Naked and Famous, you got last year. AH: Beastwars. CP: Delaney Davidson is getting some deserved attention, Panther and the Zoo self-released a great album, and Street Chant are going from strength to strength. JAR: Can we just hand every award of this kind to Flying Nun? JF: Even though she ditched us I guess that goes to Kimbra with a sweet break-up song, an Aria and all. KK: Diana Rozz. Just because they released their EP ages ago is no excuse for forgetting them.

Breakaway international artisT Someone who wasn’t big, then was everywhere. That’s what we’re looking for here. A new music darling who has won over critics and fans alike, while still retaining some sensibility of being “underground”. If you haven’t heard of Ty Segall, then just you wait until 2012. Garage rock’s new man of the moment is simply killing. AH: Kate Bush or Chris Connelly. JAR: Drake definitely solidified his position, but sadly Florence will probably do better. JF: We Are Augustines are deservedly doing really well for themselves. KK: This has been tUnE-yArDs’ year and her year only. Although knees have gone weak for Bon Iver.

in review

Hunk of the year

Best TV Show

Best gig

It truly is the golden age of television. Producers and networks are taking risks that are paying off. Comedies are funnier, dramas are tenser and period shows are in full swing. But who would have thought that dragons would take the world by storm? Game of Thrones has taken the world by storm, and we just can’t wait for the second season. Still, there have been other shows you just couldn’t miss, haven’t there? AH: Mad Men. CP: Definitely Treme. JAR: Boardwalk Empire. No competition. JF: Hillary Barry is the standout TV show of the year. JM: Community. So funny. So. Very. Funny. SW: The Colbert Report by virtue of consistency. KK: The Venture Bros. Thanks for addressing the bureaucracy we always wondered about in the superhero/superscience racket, guys. It’s the smartest cartoon out there.

We’ll have to give this one to a month-long celebration. Nunvember reminded us why we love the Flying Nun label oh-so much, and brought us days upon days of gigs all around the country. Congratulations Nunners, you’ve earned every grey hair these 30 years have given you. AH: Rhian Sheehan at The Mercury Theatre or FMP 4. CP: Makeshift venues have been bizarre in Christchurch this year, so catching Lawrence Arabia in a library and Liam Finn in a tent started to seem more normal than weird, but I’ve got to give props to The Subliminals and The Clean. JAR: The National. Powerstation. In tears before they even played a note. JF: Lovefoxxx spat on me at BDO and I loved every moment. SW: Disasteradio at The Kings Arms. KK: I’m saying this preemptively, but I know it’s going to be Guitar Wolf.

One guess. You get ONE guess. AH: Michael Fassbender. CP: My mate Ingrid looooves Ryan Gosling now he’s got a six pack… JAR: Ryan Gosling. OMFG. JF: Weedy superhero Andrew Garfield. Respect. JM: Go Girls’ Jay Ryan. Yum! SW: Gosling. KK: The only people who don’t say Gosling are doing it out of spite. Gosling. Gosling. Gosling.

Hunkette of the year Most times when you see a celebrity taking a naked photo of herself, she’s in a toilet stall lifting up her shirt, but not even fuzzy camera-phone software could turn this girl into a tart. on screen Puss in boots FILM lll

A Shrek spin-off film was inevitable but, after the last couple of lacklustre outings, its potential quality was up for debate. Luckily, Puss in Boots is more of the flick many envisioned after seeing Shrek 2 than the unfunny mess of Shrek the Third. As an origin story, the film does the bare minimum

gag that had me straining facial muscles. In typical DreamWorks fashion, they’ve spliced in a couple of dance numbers that will either cause your face to smile or briefly implode. New entrant Humpty Alexander Dumpty is voiced by a surprisingly subdued Zach Galifianakis, while of what’s expected (even Banderas and Hayek give the odd acknowledging the dullness of wink-wink nudge-nudge at older the tired ‘flashback sequence’). audience members clued up on the However, its blend of various duo’s history (the filmmakers were fairy tales, nursery rhymes two scenes away from animating a and pop-culture references machine gun guitar case). (predominantly Lolcats), Visually, the film’s an remains as organic as it did in absolute splendour, showcasing the first two Shrek films. DreamWorks’ bold attention to Plenty of jokes hit well, with one particularly genius ongoing detail and a masterful knowledge

him even more sympathetic, they don’t really gel with the rest of the film’s tone and come across as gratuitous. Meanwhile, the scenes taking place in the ‘present’ day have been given a little too much of the Hollywood treatment, and with the melodrama cranked up as high as it is, it’s hard to believe this was a true story. Pertinent social commentary is sprinkled throughout, and, although it would’ve been nice to see that expressed in more subtle fashion, The First Grader works as a tearjerker with occasional moments of genuine levity and emotional gravity.

STARRING NAOMIE HARRIS, TONY KGOROGE AND SAM FEUER

The true story of an elderly Mau Mau freedom fighter getting a free primary school education in Kenya is a unique piece of source material. While there are times when the film lives up to that promise, it also comes with contrived weaknesses that stop the film reaching its potential. You cannot level that accusation at the cast. The two central characters, the titular student Maruge and his plucky teacher Jane, turn in well-rounded, fleshed-out performances that are the piece’s highlight. Given the script they were working from, it can’t have been easy. The story is told partly with flashbacks to Maruge’s past, namely scenes of torture that he endured. Whilst these do make

for the 3D medium that no one else can seem to grasp. You may not leave the theatre remembering much of the plot but you’ll definitely recall trying to stroke that fur you thought was in front of you.

Following in the same vein as the earlier Hallmark holiday rom-com Valentine’s Day, this is a joyless, overstuffed confection that seems designed more to maximise product placement (right down to Warner Bros’ next blockbuster) and showcase New York’s sights and sounds than to entertain. Bizarrely sober given its ‘big night’ setting, the film’s lengthy running time means most audience members will require a stiff drink to recover afterwards. They’re more likely to go into a coma, however, from the excess saccharine on display as director Marshall coats everything in a sickly sweet sheen. Whilst Heigl and Parker look

right at home in this fluff, the sight of former Oscar winners Berry and Swank bravely trying to add gravitas and glamour to proceedings just looks unnatural, while De Niro’s career, let alone his character, feels like it’s on its last legs. No doubt New Year’s Eve will be a box office hit that will pave the way for Memorial Day – The Musical, but for me it’s the cinematic equivalent of the worst of the women’s magazines: all style and no substance. GAMING Tekken Hybrid Game Review

I am the best out of all of my friends at Tekken. It’s a great feeling. Well, at Tekken 6, anyway. If my friends are reading this and they disagree – let’s not forget that fucking slaying I gave you all last time we played. Tekken holds a soft spot for me. It was the first Playstation game I played. I’ve grown up with the characters. Even though Tekken 5 broke my PS2, all was forgiven upon playing Tekken 6. I fell back in love with the characters that returned. I picked up my new best player in Alisa, an adorable little android who I redesigned into a greaserhippie . My Italian friends fell in love with Ganryu and his customised salmon hat. So when we heard that Tekken Hybrid was coming out, there was a collective faint among us. But, as you get older, you learn not to put things on a pedestal. So I’ll be as honest as I can in reviewing this new game. OH MY GOD IT’S TOTALLY AMAZING. That is, if you’re already a fan. It’s a trip down memory lane. Remember Tekken Tag and how you could do Tekken Bowling? Well, it’s back. Hell, you can even play the old Tekken Tag in HD.

PBP529_GG_97x141_aw.indd 3

There’s also movies! Yeah, total movies that you can totally watch. And not the shitty liveaction movies – actual Namco mini-movies. It also comes with a tasty little demo for Tekken Tag Tournament 2. So all of these things and more come together to prove the games’ namesake of Hybrid. Unfortunately, the sad fact is that this is a game for those already in love with the game. If you’ve never played before (you fool), I’d have to suggest that you get your hands on Tekken 6 and then get involved in Hybrid. It hurts me to say it, but far be it from me to tell you that this game is a must-have where in reality it’s a shout-out to the fanboys. If you’re like me and you agree that Tekken is the best fighting game out there (chill out Street Fighter crew – there’s less strategy and more brute force in that franchise) then you’ll already have this latest Tekken instalment on your wish list. It’s nothing short of Tekken 6.5 with added bonuses. But the real release will come next year. This is simply something to hold us Tek-heads over until then. Written by Adam East

One of the go-to shows of the season, we caught up with Six60’s lead singer Matiu Walters to find out how to make a gold-certified album and what you can expect to see when they get up on your stage. Walters says Six60 formed just short of five years ago while studying at Otago and the band’s name comes from their second year address on Castle Street. They created a makeshift studio and released an EP in 2008 — the show starts there. They started a Facebook page and it went viral. Walters describes their 2011 success of having a gold-certified album and getting on the tour circuit as cool. “It doesn’t seem like anything different. We’ve had a few milestones, like playing Homegrown. There’s a vibe that we’re a lot busier.” Walters describes the band as “A bunch of different guys with different upbringings and influences.” You’d think that would make songwriting difficult, but for Six60 it makes the process a lot easier. Their sound isn’t pigeonholed; it’s a lot like an iPod Shuffle. “How people listen to music is how we write,” Walters explains. “When I sit down and listen to music I don’t just exclusively listen to rock.” The lads are teaming up with rising Dubstep sensations Mount Eden, who they’ve had a bit to do with in the past for a

tour around the festival tracks. It’s a party atmosphere Walters says fans should “expect energy, expect a show, expect a good time. We love playing shows.” Catching the music bug during an intimate show at the St James to James Brown and adding Stevie Wonder’s control of the audience and AC/DC’s ownership of the big stage to his favourite live experiences, you get the feeling Walters is a man all about the show and putting on a good one at that. Adding a couple of new songs to their summer set list, Walters is looking forward to the festivals. “Possibly getting to meet some big names. At Rhythm & Vines we get to share the same stage as Grandmaster Flash and Pendulum.” Mangawhai is also looking pretty important. “It’s the opening show so that will set the standard.” It’s also a bit of a ‘home’ show for Walters, who has a lot of family in that neck of the woods. The other side of New Year’s is looking to be just as big for Six60, as they’re currently setting sights on a world tour. “We want to play as many countries and as many bars as possible!”

Greg Saunier is the drummer in a band that has often been referred to as one of the greatest bands of all time. Deerhoof has been around for roughly 15 years, depending on what incarnation of the band you’re thinking of. Greg is the drummer’s drummer. When it came time to interview him, I asked a friend of mine (a die-hard Deerhoof fan since way back) if he had any genius questions he’s been dying to know. Said friend told me “It would just be drum nerd questions”. But in Greg’s words, “There is no such thing as a drum nerd. If you play the drums you are automatically cool. Aren’t I right, drummers?” Back in the mid 2000s, director Justin Theroux asked Deerhoof if the band would work with him on his film Dedication. “Justin was a fan and approached us and we hit it off immediately... I really savoured the challenge of marrying sound to image but I’m not sure I’d want to get that tangled up in that corporate spaghetti again. All those adversarial relationships and grumpy nineto-five-ers.” But it’s not their film work that they’re famous for. Fifteen years and 11 albums gets you noticed, but it also means there’s time to reflect and reconsider the songs you’ve already made. Greg says that he doesn’t sit around listening to his own records, as he has “heard them

too many times while I was making them”. Yet the beauty of performing live gives bands the chance to rework their songs in any way they see fit. “My favourite stuff to play live is from the new album [Deerhoof vs. Evil]. But all our live versions are pretty different from the record versions, we’re like a Deerhoof cover band.” As anyone who’s been to a Deerhoof show can tell you, the band does not take themselves seriously. Look at any live footage or see some press shots – you won’t be seeing four people standing plainly next to a wall. I ask who Greg would like to work with outside of the Deerhoof realm. “I can do a really good Keith Richards imitation and a good Charlie Watts imitation so if the Rolling Stones are ever one engine down I am their man.” Fun. It’s the best (if not the simplest) way to describe anything Deerhoof happens to be involved with. When the likes of The Flaming Lips, Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, Sleigh Bells and many more cite them as influences, you know that they’re a band who know how to make an impression. And while they may be used to playing the likes of All Tomorrows Parties, Highline, Coachella et al, they still somehow manage to find the time to make it down under. “NZ is no Epcot centre but don’t sell yourself short. We love it there.”
