Rumour Has It

It’s not an announcement as much as an acknowledgement of a rumour you may have heard. While there haven’t been any 100% confirmations from promoters or venues, word is travelling that Radiohead will be playing in New Zealand this November. What started off as a tweet from Connan Mockasin (“I won’t be coming home for camp but will be with Radiohead later in the year” - since removed) was later supported when 95bFM host Charlotte Ryan said that she heard through the grapevine that it was happening. Fingers crossed.

Real Estate have added one more date to their New Zealand tour. Originally the multi-piece were slated for just two North Island shows, but Mystery Girl have announced that a Dunedin show has been added to the bill. Following Real Estate’s Auckland show at The Kings Arms on Thursday 15 March and the San Fran Bath House gig in Wellington on Friday 16 March, the band will play one South Island show at Refuel in Dunedin on Saturday 17 March.

Knights Of The Dub Table will be playing six shows nationwide next month as they celebrate the release of their debut album Way of the DUB. Starting in their hometown of Hamilton on Friday 03 February, the Knights will play at Flow before heading to Auckland’s 4:20, The Royal in Palmerston North, Medusa in Wellington and The Pheasant Plucker in Rotorua before finishing up in Gisborne at the Poverty Bay Club.
24/01 Stairway to the Heavens
Auckland’s Stardome knows what people want, and that’s progressive music mixed with light shows in a place where everything is all cosmic and junk. Surround sound and psychedelia come together for Led Zeppelin and Space Park’s roller coaster ride, where you can “take a crazy ride through a theme park with-out leaving your seat”. The adult-only evenings will be held at the Stardome Observatory & Planetarium on Tuesday 24 January and Tuesday 28 February.
Tom Rodwell and Storehouse play nine shows over the next few weeks. Last week the bluesmen kicked off their tour in Auckland celebrating the release of their single ‘Adam in the Garden’ from their album Live Humble, and this week they play in Mapua, Golden Bay, Nelson, Wairau Valley and St Arnaud.

Melbourne duo DEAD have announced six New Zealand shows in February including their performance at Camp A Low Hum. The two-piece have a touch of Lightning Bolt in them, which is always a bonus when it comes to live shows. Kicking off on Wednesday 08 February at Wanganui’s Arc Theatre, DEAD will follow on to play in Palmerston North before heading to Camp, then to Wellington and Hamilton before finishing up in Auckland.

In Brief... Online music streaming site Grooveshark is being sued by four major record label companies. Universal Music, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI have all filed suits against Grooveshark’s parent company Escape Media Group, saying that no royalty payments have been made. Grooveshark is one of the few streaming services that’s cost-free for anyone to listen to, but the future of the service looks bleak. Without getting into the legalities which half of us don’t really understand anyway, it’s probably best to queue up your final playlist and start looking elsewhere online for similar services. American jazztress Madaleine Peyroux has cancelled her one New Zealand show in Auckland in March. Refunds can be made from point of purchase. Local big-beaters Kerretta will be playing at Wellington’s Mighty Mighty on Saturday 21 January and Auckland’s Kings Arms on Saturday 28 January, before heading to Europe to play a 23 date tour across the continent. The Coachella line-up has been announced and it’s as impressive as ever, but it’s nice that we can take solace in the fact that the likes of M83, The Horrors, Bon Iver, Noel Gallagher, SBTRKT, Kasabian, Black Lips, The Vaccines, Florence + The Machine, Real Estate and more of the festival’s headliners are all playing in New Zealand in the near future as well. The seventh annual Titirangi Festival of Music has been announced to take place from Thursday 29 March through to Sunday 01 April. The festival is comprised of various music and arts performances spread around Titirangi. Tickets go on sale in February and the programme is yet to be finalised, so we’ll stay in the loop about this yearly celebration. Seafood is great, but seafood with entertainment is better. Over Auckland’s Anniversary Weekend the Auckland Seafood Festival will be reeling you in with live music from Avalanche City, The Fourmyula, Hello Sailor, Blues Toulouse, Jonny Love, Uncle Monkey and Anna Hawkins. And of course there’ll be more food than you can shake a fish at. Due to popular demand, the New Plymouth show of the More FM Summer Vineyard Tour
has moved from the Brookland Lawn to the iconic TSB Bowl of Brooklands. Aloe Blacc & The Grand Scheme, John Butler Trio, Tiki Taane, Annabel Fay and Sweet Mix Kids will all be performing. Auckland’s Grey Lynn record store Beat Merchants has announced that the shop will be closing its doors at the end of January. They’re looking for a new outlet, but in the interim (however long that may be) the store will be running online over at discogs.com/ user/beatmerchants. Organisers for Camp A Low Hum have released a 90-minute cassette tape featuring 26 of the 70 artists performing at the annual alt-fest retreat. The tape (which comes with a digital download code, of course) is available from alowhum.com/shop/a-low-hum-merch/ for $10. On a side note, tickets for Camp are almost sold out so get in quick, lest you end up all alone when all of your friends are away in tents and watching 70 bands over three days. The fifth annual Anniversary Weekend Show at the Coromandel’s Coroglen Tavern will be held on Saturday 28 January. Concord Dawn, State Of Mind, Bulletproof, Incognito and MC Rugged Tekniques will all be making their way to the Coromandel for this sell-out event.

Get On The Busk The Stronger Christchurch World Buskers Festival kicks off on this week on Thursday 19 January and runs through to Sunday 29 January. If you’re in Christchurch over these dates you’ll probably have lined up your must-sees already. If you’re thinking about making tracks to the Garden City for the Buskers Festival, you’re on the right train of thought. Head to worldbuskersfestival. com for more info.
Film news A trailer is online for the LCD Soundsystem doco Shut Up and Play the Hits. The half documentary/ half live-footage film follows man behind the music James Murphy as he plays his final gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden. And hot damn, if it doesn’t send shivers down your spine. An amazing trailer for what will assumedly be an amazing film from and amazing artist. The film has also been picked in the official selection for the Sundance 2012 Film Festival. Officially, there’s no word on a Bridesmaids 2, which is a bummer for any fans of the stunning cast. But Bridesmaids actors Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm and Chris O’Dowd will be joining our favourite Party Down-er Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt in the indie rom-com Friends With Kids. This is Westfeldt’s directorial debut as she moves up from her scriptwriting stints on films like Kissing Jessica Stein. The trailer for Friends With Kids is out now, and with such a fan-favourite cast, we find it hard to believe it will be anything other than one of those better new age rom-coms. The American Society of Cinematographers has announced the nominees for 2011’s Best Cinematography. Guillaume Schiffman is up for The Artist, Jeff Cronenweth for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Robert Richardson for Hugo, Hoyte van Hoytema for the remake of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and (unsurprisingly) Emmanuel Lubezki for The Tree of Life.

Thursday 19 Regurgitator & Disasteradio
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
San Fran Bath House
General Release
8pm, $18, undertheradar.co.nz
Sometimes when you’re at your friend’s house you have a YouTube party. That’s when you play too many songs and eventually it becomes people waiting for their turn to play funny videos. Regurgitator tends to pop up in the nostalgia version of YouTube parties alongside OPM’s ‘Heaven is a Half-pipe’.
Whenever you play charades, Journey to the Centre of the Earth is always a good film to do. Now that there’s a sequel, it’s got even more words so you can add some spice into your game. Will The Rock be better than Brendan Fraser as the lead? That kind of question keeps you up at night.

Do you love them? Do you hate them? Do you think they’re a bunch of homophobic, sexist brats? Or do you tell people they’re “just lyrics”? Do you have a thing for Tyler? Do you think Frank Ocean is like a morbid Kanye? Odd Future play this Thursday, like it or lump it.
Popstrangers play with Poor You Poor Me, Cool Cult and Tied On Teeth at Auckland’s favourite new altvenue in the middle of the city. The K Road crew can head to High Street this Wednesday as some of 2011’s fan-favourite bands come together to beat out those midweek blues.

7pm, $57.30, the-edge.co.nz
NPR contributor and all-around smart funny guy David Sedaris will entertain Auckland audiences this Wednesday and Thursday at the Auckland Town Hall. Despite being a writer by nature, Sedaris is a performer who is often more referred to as a “humourist” than a “comedian”. All in all, he’s well worth your time.
This remake of the 1979 BBC miniseries and adaptation of the classic spy novel has had critics fawning. The Cold War espionage tale features Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong and many more Brit-faves.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Ghost Wave and She’s So Rad all hit Auckland’s Kings Arms Tavern for the big night before the big day. How mad were you that you missed UMO last time they played? Super mad? Then here’s your second chance.

Wrestling is cool. I met this guy over New Year’s on holiday from England and he kept wanting to wrestle me. He kept trying to get my arm in some kind of arm hold, expect he couldn’t do it. He tells me he’ll get me in an arm hold one day. Bring it, Juddy.
With music from Ladi6, Sola Rosa, Greg Johnson, The Babysitters Circus, comedy from Jarred Fell and Jamie Bowen, pretty dancing from the Royal NZ Ballet, tricks and catching and whatnot from The Fuse Circus of Wellington, magic shows, big inflatable slides and junk that look like they should be on a Japanese game show, horses (OMG CUTE), a Toyworld tent (OMG NOSTALGIA), storytelling (OMG DITCH THE KIDS AND HAVE A GLASS OF WINE AND SOME SWEET NIBBLES) and plenty more all-ages fun, the Bloom Family Festival has something for everyone, but especially those with kids. The family-friendly festivities kick off on Friday and run through to Sunday.
The Boy With Tape On His Face Hagley Park North 7.30pm, $10-15, WBF booking booth from 11am on the day
Who knew that when you mix mime with clown, it ends up being hilarious instead of an eight-year-old’s worst nightmare? The Boy With Tape On His Face has taken his act around the world – recently you may have seen him on that big royal shebang on Christmas on the telly. He’s damn good. So go see him.

Horses and racing and gambling and drinking and flirting and hats and dresses and blue shirts and white shirts and stripey shirts and jockeys and sunglasses and dancing and falling over and partying right into the night. Fun.
Sandwiches will be celebrating Wellington Anniversary Weekend in style, and Saturday sees DJ Yoda take to the stage. Tossing up whether or not to make a joke about this gig in Yoda speak. Hmmm. Maybe not.

Wau Wau Sisters
Western Springs Stadium
Hagley Park North 1pm, FREE
7pm, $2 donation, Door sales only
Aural Trash, Mike E, Big Bry, Andy Juice, Tania M, MC Energy, Fatcat Radio, Pakage, Subverse and Spec all play on this day in the sun. If it’s raining, then you can laugh at the fact this is called a “solar” series, and make jokes about solar powered gigs. Gigawatts. There’s your punchline.
Well, well, well. The Wau Wau Sisters. If you don’t know them, then maybe you’ve got safe search on your Google. This overly-talented duo mix cabaret, circus, comedy and more, and they’re hosting the Comedy Club during the Buskers Festival. Leave the kids at home for this one.
The Back-Up Dancers 6pm, FREE
The Back-Up Dancers are two gals that you could maybe describe as Kath and Kim mixed with Amy Winehouse. Maybe a bit of Topp Twins should get thrown in there for good measure. The duo bring their Don’t Cha Wish tour to the Buskers Festival in the hope of finding true love. Or something.

It’s been around for longer than some of the people who will be going. Now in its 20th year, the Big Day Out proves time and time again that it is one of the best-run festivals our country has to offer. You know where the beer tent is, you know where the toilets are, the bands play on time... it runs like clockwork, and it’s finely tuned to the nth degree. In no particular order, this Friday the line-up includes Soundgarden, Kasabian, My Chemical Romance, The Living End, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Nero, Cavalera Conspiracy, Parkway Drive, Girl Talk, Royksopp, Battles, Bassnectar, Kimbra, Regurgitator, The Vaccines, Mariachi el Bronx, Cage the Elephant, Foster The People, Best Coast, Das Racist, Cut Off Your Hands, Gin Wigmore, P-Money, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, David Dallas, Beastwars, Ghostwave, MayaVanya, I Am Giant, Midnight Youth, Cairo Knife Fight, The Adults, Junica, Mt. It’s Auckland’s favourite new festival. It started off well (unless you were solely a Daniel Johnston fan) in Auckland’s downtown sector back in 2010. Last year there were some hiccups in Aotea Square when it got late, but at least they got the licensed section sorted. This year on Auckland’s Anniversary Weekend, Laneway/Laneways heads down to Auckland’s new favourite hangout, Silo Park. Feist, The Horrors, Gotye, Laura Marling, Pajama Club, SBTRKT (Live), Shayne P Carter, Washed Out, Twin Shadow, Anna Calvi, M83, Cults, Girls, EMA, Yuck, Toro Y Moi, Glasser, Opossom, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Austra, Transistors and Sherpa are all on the bill in this alt/indie fest. Some folks have been saying it’s their new favourite festival and some have been slaying it dwelling on the past.
When and Where: Monday 30 Jan, Silo Park, Wynyard Quarter, Beaumont Street, Auckland. Tickets: From auckland.landwayfestival.com.au for $127. Transport Options: 15 minute walk from Britomart transport centre to the venue. Best bet is to get the bus or train into town. Area info: Strictly R18. Food and drink: Hungairan Langos Bread, Mexican, Nice Blocks, Atomic Coffee, Gormet Pies from Piggies Pies, Fresh Integrative Therapy Fish and Vege tacos, Bluebells Cupcakes ,Fritz weiners gormet sausages. Licensed – alcohol will be available.

Returning to our shores for the Big Day Out in January 2012 is Pittsburgh native Gregg Gillis, know by his subjective moniker Girl Talk. When asked about the name, he always replies differently, “Essentially because I really don’t know. I like the idea that it can be whatever you want.” Gillis began making music while studying at Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pittsburgh. After various collaborations, he started the Girl Talk solo project and has continued making music name ever since. Originally he’d planned to study biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. “My focus was on tissue engineering. And I did work as an engineer for a bit, but the music project was starting to eat into my work time. It really took off when I began touring and I had to make a decision.” Music, obviously, won the day. Gillis specialises in mashup-style remixes, using hundreds of unauthorised samples from different songs to create new songs on his laptop. Live, it’s the ultimate cut-and-paste on the fly. “Often I have prescriptions of the song, like the way a band rehearses, but with the freedom to change the song as the mood takes. Changes are subtle like the way a guitarist varies the solo or a drummer changes the beat a bit, but the overall architecture of the song remains the same. There’s a famous article by The New York Times Magazine which calls his music “a lawsuit waiting to happen”. “That’s just big media creating controversy where there is none,” says Gillis. “Most of the time there’s no reaction, except interest from bands keen to see how I use them on my stuff. Besides,” he adds, “I mostly make my albums free downloads so it’s really no different to playing live. I don’t profit in the conventional sense from sampling.” Asking about the future, Gillis notes that he’d rather work on individual songs rather than full-length albums with the songs tied together. “My fifth LP All Day is a free download through the Illegal Art website. I want it to be more of a taste of the live thing because you can’t really see what I’m about from just the aural aspect alone.”

I Wanted To Make A Good Chemistry Joke, But The Best Ones Argon Perhaps my adolescence owes My Chemical Romance a lot more than I give them credit for. I do still have this fond memory from all those years ago of being sent to my room for misbehaving – I can’t quite remember how – but that’s irrelevant. What mattered was me slamming the door, picking up the first CD I could find and decimating the eardrums of everyone within a 10-mile radius. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was how I first discovered the cathartic comfort of musics – screaming along at the top of my lungs to ‘I’m Not Okay’. This little anecdote is far from a one-off: My Chemical Romance were hailed by many as the voice for an unsettled generation. Granted, it was nothing at all like Johnny Rotten’s disgust for the monarchy or Miles Davis’ slap to bebop’s overindulgent face in the form of cool jazz, but the kids of the ‘90s had no real war; no real struggle. What we had was MTV and a penchant for black clothing and swooping fringes. I’m sure you remember the era of the emo kid. Gerard Way and his mighty band of eyeliner-coated comrades were just what these ‘misunderstood youths’ needed, churning out teenage anthem after anthem for us to shriek along to. But the angst died off, and most of us grew up. The current generation of teens has the likes of Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez gripping their leashes, and boy bands (which we thought we finally managed to eradicate?) are making their way back in the form of One Direction and that godawful Heart2Heart. So where does this leave MCR? “We’re always ready to evolve. Even if there are those who go ‘fuck you!’ because of it, we’re still willing to make that fresh change to something new,” remarks rhythm guitarist Frank Iero. “It’s just rock. Rock for people with no intentions, no sections in the music store or category. Genres are for people who don’t actually listen. Music’s like architecture: you don’t have to know all the meticulous intricacies just to appreciate the grand design. Rock and roll has to be experienced, and I’m cool with that.”

Wellington After the plethora of great games we had towards the end of 2011, it seems that like a well-used call girl, for the next couple of weeks we’re in a bit of a dry patch. So what I thought I’d do was give a bit of a run down on what we can expect and look forward to in 2012. There are numerous sequels to critically acclaimed games such as FIFA and Call of Duty, as well as a spattering of new titles. This year will also see the launch of two new platforms in the shape of the Playstation Vita and the Wii U. On the game front, one of the most anticipated titles of the year is on its way. Although there’s no official release date, we know that Grand Theft Auto V will be hitting stores sometime in the latter half of the year. While the GTA series was certainly a style of gameplay that other games aspired and subsequently adhered to, there’s no doubt that the original open-world life of debauchery and sin will have plenty of surprises for us. I’m not saying this will be the game of the year, but it’s most definitely one to keep your eye out for. What’s also exciting is the RPG adaptation of everyone’s favourite fantasy drama Game of Thrones which will released on Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Whether this game will actually be worth your while or just a finely tuned marketing exercise to capitalise on the television phenomenon is up in the air, but we know that the game was written under the supervision of the franchise creator George RR Martin and that the player can play as one
of two roles as either a part of the Night’s Watch or a priest out to redeem his name. While the fanboy in me is excited to see this, videogame adaptations of film and television rarely rest on their own laurels, so we’ll reserve judgement of this release for now. Other titles worthy of note are Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning; Ninja Gaiden 3; Ghost Recon Future Soldier; Far Cry 3; Syndicate; Mass Effect 3; Max Payne 3; Prototype 2; CounterStrike: Global Offensive; Diablo III; Fable: The Journey; Halo 4 and South Park: The Game. South Park? Yes, South Park. But more on why that makes the wish list at a later date. As for the consoles, if you’ve played Wii then you know what it’s all about. This year the Wii U changes the gameplay slightly by adding an additional handheld motion-sensitive touchscreen console. The Vita is Sony’s upgrade from the PSP and to describe it, I’ll borrow a phrase from our content editor in that basically it’s ‘kick-ass’. Dual analog sticks, OLED touch screen and a touch pad on the back along with Bluetooth, Wifi and 3G all on a tight little dish that’s lighter than your iPhone – what’s not to love? Last year is a hard one to top in terms of content and sales in the gaming world, so let’s hope 2012 can deliver. Fus Ro Dah, everybody. Written by Jon Snow

album reviews The Roots Undun lllll
This is no hip hop album. This is a hip hop opera. A tale of the corner (told in reverse narrative) as a place where poverty, crime and death run rife. Epitomised in lost youth Redford Stephens, this story deconstructs his demise from end to beginning, uncovering the moments that led to his undoing. Accompanied with a mini series of fantastically shot music videos, which stand on the cusp of avantgarde, this experiential album pushes the evolution of hip hop and music in multimedia today. The music spans many genres, including several classical-style movements that involve cello,

So Frenchy So Chic is the ultraclassy unofficial soundtrack to the 2012 Alliance Française French Film Festival that tours Australasia every year. While French music of all kinds often barely registers on our radar down under, these compilations provide a great way to catch up, and this particular collection is a stunner. Gone are the tedious café guitars, accordions and Gitane ballads, but still in are the sexy, breathless vocals from Claire Denamur and Zaza Fournier, funky pop-soul sista love from Ornette and a good dose of that gypsy carnival rock that we know and love, courtesy of Mansfield Tya. There’s also some refreshingly familiar English alt-pop from Parisian outfit The Shoes, who sound like an elated version of Elbow and a Catatonia style femme fatalist. All in all, this is the strongest and most diverse offering from the annual double album release. C’est vraiment magnifique, non?
Here’s a funny anecdote: originally entitled Troublemaker, this release was renamed TY.O after Cruz wished to express his annoyance at people constantly pronouncing his name wrong. Self-indulgent as the title may be, Taio is nonetheless being pedantic for a set of reasons. If people are going to be talking about him (which let’s face it, they will) he wants them getting his name right. And he wants them to keep talking, because he’s clearly planning on staying around. While not necessarily amazing on a lyrical, sonic or technical level, TY.O revisits the same formula that granted such success with his unbearably catchy hit ‘Dynamite.’ On the roster for this release are huge names like David Guetta, Flo Rida and Pitbull - cementing Taio as one of the big players in the overarching pop/dance/ r’n’b megalith. Expect to be moving your feet to tracks like ‘Hangover’ and ‘Little Bad Girl’ in clubs everywhere soon.
Cobra Skulls have been plugging away at their indistinctive yet fun brand of punk for a few years now. This latest effort sees no departure from what has become the band’s signature. Gruff vocals and catchy pop choruses can both be heard repeatedly across Agitations. Despite this lack of endeavour to expand their sound ( and one that’s so common across countless similar bands) this album is enjoyable, as long as you’re into no-nonsense, dirty punk‘n’roll with pop sensibilities (think Descendents, Against Me!). The topics raised on the album are also noteworthy, all being related to the year of protest that has just passed in both the Middle East and the Western world. They don’t come off as poetic as others might, but neither do they sound preachy or too cheesy. Obviously the disgruntlement is coming from the heart. Not a classic album, but no way near terrible either, with many strong shout-along tunes.
Jack, That Cat Was Clean, put out by UK label Charly, presents us with six tracks of Charly cuts that span the plethorra of soul sound indicative of the label. The album’s name hails from a track by Dr. Horse — a deliciously saucy number which doubles easily as a style guide for soul. This album showcases some of the true mastery of producer/ musician Allan Toussiant, such as jazz number ‘Fat Cat’ by The Stokes and ‘Lovely Woman’ by Eldridge Holmes. Lee Dorsey and Allen Toussaint’s ‘Sneaking Sally Through The Alley’ delivers a hot shot of cool funk to the system. The good old bad girls from Queens The Shangri-Las dowse the album with their sound of ‘66 with ‘Love you more than Yesterday’. Barry Mann’s ‘We Gotta Get Outta This Place’ finally gets the limelight, stepping out from The Animals’ shadow. This powerfully heartbreaking original is certainly a standout.

viola, piano, and violin. ‘Sleep’ will envelop you with its soft tone and lyrical cohesiveness, creating a disturbing quality of expectation. Dope bass and that oh-so-delicious percussion blanket the entire album in a crescendo of drama, hope and disparity.

on screen THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: SECRET OF THE UNICORN FILM llll
Steven Spielberg has two films out this summer, but for my money this is the one to see. Merging plot elements from three of Herge’s books (The Secret of the Unicorn, Red Rackham’s Treasure and The Crab with the Golden Claws), the resulting adventure is never short on detail, and packed to the hilt with incident and mystery.
Technically the film is top shelf, with beautiful noir-ish lighting overseen by Spielberg’s regular cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski. The 3D aspects are not overplayed, instead creating a rich depth to near-photoreal images. John Williams’ helterskelter, Euro-flavoured score accompanies the busy and inventive visual storytelling

Dolphin Tale is an old-fashioned pledge for your heartstrings that feels like something Disney might have put out in the ‘80s. Slick, nicely paced and wellacted, it’s an earnest, sweet film that relies on the extraordinary true story of Winter, the rescued dolphin, and little on manipulative Hollywood tricks. Which is why it’s weird it’s in 3D. Other than a few dreamy underwater shots, and a brief chase scene with a wayward pelican, the extra dimension does extremely little to elevate the experience. Why bother when the story is as heartwarming as this? Are kids really that fickle? It’s rare to find a film based on a true story – much less one as emotive as this – that doesn’t stoop to sentimentality.
North African town being a highlight) but on the whole the film is a very faithful adaptation of Herge’s material, with plenty of affectionate details, in-jokes and references for the fans. Younger audiences, in particular, will be easily won over.

(Spielberg’s first venture into animation fits him like a glove). Tintin himself verges on being a slightly vanilla hero, although Jamie Bell does his best to infuse him with a sprightly and persistent energy. Mo-cap veteran Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) plays the frequently sozzled Captain Haddock (purists may question the Scottish accent) as a child-like and befuddled grump. But it’s Tintin’s canny canine companion, Snowy, who steals the show. The action is very over-the-top at times (an amazing and seamless chase sequence in a flash-flooded
Yet Dolphin Tale has plenty to say about friendship, love, loss, disappointment, compassion, positivity, tenacity, triumph over adversity, and even prosthetics technology, without shoving it down your throat. In fact, it could just be the perfect family flick to come out in time for summer. You’d be hard pressed to find a kid who wouldn’t want to swap places with Winter’s best friend, Sawyer, played by the very capable Nathan Gamble. Harry Connick Jr, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman also rise to the occasion; even if much of their input you’ll be able to spot coming from the other side of the marine centre. Even with those silly glasses on. Written by Rebecca Barry Hill, Flicks.co.nz
Some familiar cinematic conventions are delivered via a highly exotic context in this violent and sexuallycharged crime thriller from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Filled with classic movie swagger, young ne’er-do-well Riva (Patsha Bay) finds himself back in his hometown of Kinshasa (the largest city in the Congo), with a pocketful of cash and a truckload of petrol. Which, in fuel-starved Kinshasa, makes him somewhat of a target. But Riva just wants to have fun and he recruits his old buddy J.M. for a night on the town, which takes a turn for the perilous when Riva takes a shine to the local gangster’s moll (the stunning Manie Malone).
Making matters worse is Riva’s old Angolan gangster boss Cesar (Hoji Fortuna), who has come to the Congo to track down his former employee. The alien environment makes Viva Riva! a fascinating watch, as some clichés are embraced while others are turned on their head. Bay is an empathetic lead but he is blown off the screen by the angular Fortuna, who seems to carry himself with a permanent lean as the ruthless Cesar. The initial grimness of daily life in the Congo is quickly offset by the vibrancy of the characters and the beauty of the locations – but don’t go in expecting anything too slick.
