Shit worth announcing
Breaking news Friday 20 January saw the last Big Day Out arrive at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, and festival organisers along with St John Ambulance and Auckland Central Police reported a relatively trouble free day. St John Ambulance stated that staff treated 348 people for the usual and expected festival-related dramas with three being taken to hospital but none being listed as serious. The police reported that there were no arrests of the near 20,000 punters at the event. Good to see everyone was on their best behaviour for the final festival. Legendary rhythm and blues icon Etta James passed away last week at the ripe age of 73. Activist group Auckland Action Against Poverty has announced an upcoming benefit show at The Kings Arms for $10. The Sat 04 Feb show includes Heart Attack Alley, Shitripper, Lubin Rains, Tina Turntables and Moppy on the line-up.

System Of A Down have announced one New Zealand show as they ride the wake of Australia’s Soundwave Festival. The metallers are no strangers to the country and it might not be the first time you’ll see Serj Tankian walking around, but that doesn’t mean it’s nothing to get excited about. Adding to the fun, heavy thrash heads The Dillinger Escape Plan will also be playing at this one-off Auckland show at The Trusts Stadium on Wednesday 22 February.

Nikau Rhythm’s fifth birthday for the annual Anniversary Weekend Rave at the Coromandel’s Coroglen Tavern goes down this Saturday 28 January. It’s been a good four years since the likes of Concord Dawn, State of Mind, Bulletproof and Incognito with MC Rugged Tekniques have all played together, so there’s a bit of partying and catching up to be done. Tickets are available from Real Groovy, Funktion Whitianga, iTicket and the Coroglen itself for $48.
27/01 1, 2, 3, Break
Following the SKYCITY Breakers game against the Sydney Kings this Friday, the Kiwi ballers will be throwing down some post-match action at SKYCITY’s sports bar The Nation’s Clubrooms. Hosted by Radio Sport’s D’Arcy Waldegrave, fans (or haters) can mix and mingle (or abuse and subsequently get kicked out) at the bar with the Breakers themselves. If you really feel like you’re on form, the SKYCITY Cheer Team will also be there for you to either bitch about or flirt at and think about doing kisses with.
10/02 soho good
Remember when Sky channel SoHo threw itself in front of our eyeballs, entertaining us with some of the best shows available? Then remember how you had to start paying for it after a while? Yeah, that was a bummer. But last week Sky announced that for one weekend SoHo will be available for free to anyone with the digital platform. The Open Weekend, as it’s called, kicks off at 1.15pm on Friday 10 February through to midnight on Monday 13 February.
26/02 Rockin’ Vines
Ascension Wine Estate seems to be packing in the gigs lately. Ex-Little River Band singer Glenn Shorrock, Sharon O’Neill, Shona Laing, Debbie Harwood and Annie Crummer will all be performing at the vineyard’s latest announced day of fun in the sun Rock The Vines. The collective of musicians will play at the Matakana venue on Sunday 26 February.

Island Delight The Red Bull Music Academy is bringing the party to Waiheke Island as The Do-Over makes its debut down under. Since the Los Angeles launch of the party back in 2005, The Do-Over arrives in New Zealand for the first time this Saturday 28 January at The Bay. While the line-up is kept secret until the day of the party itself, we can say that some of the original Do-Over crew from the US are making the trip to the island in Auckland. DJs Chris Haycock and Jamie Strong kick off the festivities with sangria in the afternoon at what DJ Jazzy Jeff (who doesn’t get quoted anywhere near enough) has called “the best party on the planet”. Organisers have stated that there has been a line-up correction – previously announced act Aloe Blacc will not be appearing at The Do-Over due to scheduling conflicts.

Up top, Down Load No doubt most readers will have heard of the Mega Conspiracy bust that happened last week, AKA the arrest of the bigwigs behind file-sharing website Mega Upload. Being the digitally savvy users that you are, you’ll have an opinion on what went down. It’s either big news or small news to you, depending on whether you use megaupload. com for your own purposes, most of which is illegal to do – a point that has certainly become moot now that the site has been taken down. What you may not have heard is what happened as a response. The self-proclaimed hacktivist “fighters of internet freedom” group known as Anonymous took to websites
such as universalmusic.com, justive.gov, mpaa.org, riaa.org and more shut those sites down. All in all this will not be the last time you hear about the file-sharing argument (it wasn’t all that long ago that the infamous “Skynet” debacle hit New Zealand). What this does mean is that we could be looking at a new business model being developed for subscription services in terms of file-sharing, although the manner in which this potential new service has come about may be overkill. Follow the progress of the Stop Online Piracy Act as it unfolds in America – there’s a very good chance it will end up affecting New Zealanders sooner rather than later.
For The Love Of Hell A new label has opened up shop in Auckland. Hell Is Now Love is a boutique sister label to Muzai Records, set up by Martin Phillips and Muzai’s Benji Jackson. Phillips says of the new label, “Specialising in spreading the word about great, largely overlooked local bands, HINL is dedicated to music that doesn’t get played on crap radio stations or musicless television, music that means something, music that deserves to be heard not because of a promotional budget but because of the dedication and passion of great musicians.” Lost Rockets, Mason Clinic, Proton Beast and Black Science from Auckland, Hollywoodfun Downstairs, Captain Sergeant Major and The Postures from Wellington, Make More from Brisbane and Will Gresson from Berlin are the artists on the roster so far. All Hell is Now Love releases are available through the label’s bandcamp store (hellisnowlove.bandcamp. com ) for free download or from online sites Bandcamp and Trade Me as well as Musiquarium and Marbecks in Auckland, Lucky in Hunterville and Evil Genius in Wellington.

Whether you think George Clooney is a total dreamboat or nothing but a smug smile machine is up to you, but he does bang out some good flicks. While this story of a husband/father whose life gets twistturned upside down seems overdone, it’s won itself the awards to get some interest from us.

The dawn following the dusk of superhero movies may be here
A lot of filmgoers question whether the superhero movie genre has passed its use-by date. They say that they’re sick of them, and that they don’t see the point in all of these prequel/sequel reboots such as the Spider-Man franchise, the X-Men Origins series or the fact that there are already people lined up to work on the next installment of non-canonical Batman movies. Well, here’s a film that will probably both infuriate and placate those people at the same time. Chronicle is the directorial debut of Josh Trank. Trank originally developed the story, and it was subsequently rewritten by Max Landis. Odds are you won’t have heard of either of these men, since they’ve both spent their industry lives waiting for their big break – enter Chronicle, the superhero origin story with a difference. Sound familiar? It should. Comparisons have been made between District 9 and Chronicle already. The premise of found-footage mixed with a unique take on a classic (and some might say overused) format, using relatively unknown actors that results in making critics refer to the film as one that ushers in a new era for whatever genre it happens to be. As a comic and superhero fanboy, the trailer for Chronicle got me hyped. I’m a sucker for coming-of-age movies (a genre this film could somewhat fall into) and the idea that “if it was to happen, this is how it would happen”. If you and your buddies discovered you had super powers, wouldn’t you go round pranking people and filming it? Using your telekinesis to spook people? Of course you would. We’ve all heard the classic, “With great power comes great responsibility” line, but an even more notorious quote is the age old, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. And if you were a teenager with all those damn hormones and all that self-loathing looking for a place in the world, only to find

|
grooveguide.co.nz
that you’ve become even more of an outcast now... wouldn’t the power start going to your head? What happens when you’re a typical teenager making typical rash adolescent decisions, except those rash decisions involve superpowers? The film has clearly impressed the suits in Hollywood, as Trank is topping the list of directors to helm the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Yes, another reboot. But with the way that superhero movies are heading (darker, more relatable, original storytelling and all-round less camp) we could be seeing the dawn of new superhero movies as opposed to the end of them altogether. Chronicle is less Blair Witch/Paranormal Activity and more... well, that’s the rub, isn’t it? It isn’t the very first of its kind, but it is one that could send more low-budget indie flicks into the sci-fi territory without ending up in B-grade movie hell. As with any director, their first film is rarely their best work. But a film like Chronicle usually receives praise for its idea as opposed to its execution. By no means am I saying that it’s a heaping pile of shit, but look at any directorial debut and you’ll find that it’s common to walk away thinking the director didn’t quite know what they were doing. While that’s not the case here, you’ll still find yourself contemplating the longevity of Chronicle. It might not have the staying power, but the first ride is always the most exciting, isn’t it? Written by Kevin Kartun CHRONICLE DIRECTED BY Josh Trank STARRING Michael B. Jordan, Michael Kelly and Alex Russell

the former frontman of one of the worlds biggest reggae groups talks life after ub40
“What are you like?” I think, as Ali Campbell (former front man from Reggae Supergroup UB40) calls me up. Having learnt he’s just returned from the road I expected jaded, tired mumblings on the end of the blower. Turns out the man’s in fine voice, despite having just touched down from a whirlwind tour of the Caribbean with his new band. Campbell will also be flying through the antipodes as part of a down under excursion which includes Rotorua’s Raggamuffin festival on 27 28 January. “Yeah, it’s a great life touring,” he confirms enthusiastically, “though I won’t get time to see much of New Zealand. This is about my third time down there and I love it!” Campbell is the one and only original voice from massive ‘80s hits like ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Kingston Town’ and ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’. UB40 sold over 70 million records worldwide, toured across the globe, notched up four number one worldwide singles and over 40 Top UK singles, released 24 studio albums and received an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. Campbell’s voice has provided the soundtrack to a whole generation and beyond. “It’s surprising how many people still have the vinyl, they bring it along to concerts for signing at such,” he remarks. “I still think reggae sounds best on the old turntable, too.” In October 2007, Campbell released solo album Running Free, featuring guest artists such as soul great Smokey Robinson, Mick Hucknall and super dub team Sly and Robbie. The album went top 10 in the UK charts, attaining gold status. That led to his departure from UB40 in January of 2008 after 28 years with the band which was put down to ‘management

and business disputes’ which Campbell now philosophically dismisses as “old news, not worth the lines on this page.” A happy result was keyboardist Mickey Virtue also leaving UB40 to form part of Cambell’s new tour band and contributing to his third solo album Flying High in 2009, which once again hit the highs with a top 15 in the UK charts. Campbell has always had a soft spot for covers, and in October 2010 he put out solo effort number four – Great British Songs. He tells me that recruiting Sly and Robbie again was a bit of a challenge. “They were very wary of a dub version of ‘Hard Day’s Night’ – they couldn’t see it working. But it did. I think I got one over them there!” He laughs. I finish on the old chestnut – what is he planning to get up to on this New Zealand visit? “No bungy jumping or surfing,” he laughs. “I’m too white! I might get another tattoo. I have a few Maori tats and tribal stuff. That’d be fun if I get time?” All business enquiries apply to this publication. Nah, just kidding. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

Ahead of their visit to Auckland, Anthony Gonzalez, founder and lead songwriter for M83, spEAks to Groove Guide about confidence, vision, and childhood influences. There was once a point when albums were everything. It’s a shame that neither I nor the majority of the readers of this esteemed magazine were even alive during that halcyon time when the only realistic way to sit and enjoy music was to slide a vinyl record from its often excellently-prepared sleeve, lay it on a turntable, lower the needle, and descend into a crackly kind of heaven. Anthony Gonzalez was born into an age of rapid expansion, in which the tools used to make and listen to music were multiplying and advancing. There’s no getting away from this in the songs that he writes – pulled determinately in one direction by modernism and futuristic tones, whilst simultaneously falling comfortably into the cushy lushness of his beloved decade: the ‘80s. He’s always been informed by his surroundings while still pertaining to the extroversion and melancholia of pop music; its colour, its vibrancy, and the visual element that he ties wholeheartedly in to his own, oftentimes surreal, sleeves and videos. “I grew up in the ‘90s, and going to record stores, y’know…” he muses. “The first thing that you see is the cover of the record. The music and the visual [element] go together. It’s very important.” M83’s career trajectory sits somewhere astride the two warring factions of modernity and nostalgia, maintaining a steady rise over the past 10 years before the explosion that was Saturdays = Youth, the point at which Gonzalez’ childhood and teenage inspirations came bursting, almost entirely unfettered, in to the mainstream. It required a mammoth effort to support it, one that saw Gonzalez grace stages with the like of the now-faltering Kings Of Leon, and the recently-reformed Depeche Mode, all of which pointed relentlessly at Gonazalez’ shortcomings as a live performer; he could inject as much bravado and pomp as he liked into his recorded music, but to have it induce a full and punishing impact, then it needed a euphoric set of performances to follow. Part of his courage and confidence comes from a realisation that he needed to up his game. “I said to myself, ‘Okay, Anthony; you just turned 30. It’s time for you to be less shy in front of a microphone…’” he recalls. “When you see all those frontmen on stage who are very confident in front of a large

audience it gives you confidence to try the same thing, and that’s what I wanted to do with this album… I’ve been in the industry for ten years as a recording artist, so I’m definitely more confident.” His latest work, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, unashamedly harks back to an age of double albums – formerly the only way possible to allow both the public and fans to engage with an extensive release. Critics wielding doubting pens have tried to stand at the receiving end of a tidal wave of praise, dealing blows to an album that should be lauded for its scope and attempts to escape from a regimented schedule of recording 9-13 tracks, releasing them, and touring them until another set of songs is written or a major drug habit is created, claiming that although Gonzalez tries and succeeds in terms of sheer vision, he lacks the depth required to make Hurry Up… a truly great album. A few went as far as to say the album was a simple rehash of failed cuts from previous records. Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is a challenge, and there is no getting around it. From the placid troughs of slower, more ambient tracks, to the skyscraping heights of ‘Midnight City’, ‘This Bright Flash’ and ‘Claudia Lewis’, it could almost read like a film score á la Vangelis’ work for Blade Runner, or Cliff Martinez’ brooding synths conjured up to accompany the noir-ish film Drive. Johnny Jewel (beloved producer behind the nigh-on incestuous Italians Do It Better label) has recently added to this recent cinematic theme with his Symmetry project. In a few weeks, Gonzalez will bring his small troupe of musicians to Auckland’s shores to play St. Jerome’s Laneway. Expect equal parts surging, wide-eyed euphoria laid alongside slower, gentler ambient outings. Indeed, his live shows read much like records: expansive, challenging, and in no way lacking in effort. GAMING Forza 4 Game Review
I’ve decided over the next couple of weeks to take a quick look back at some of the games released toward the end of 2011 that perhaps lost out due to the hype surrounding release such as COD and BF3. Forza has been one my favourite racing games for years. The reason for this really is that I’m not a total petrol head, but enjoy a good race. Forza’s great in this regard, giving you lots of various difficulty settings to enjoy the game at your level of ability/ interest. Personally I’m in favour of having the racing line on in braking zones, automatic gears but steering and braking assists off. For those hardcore enough however, you can turn all of this off and even introduce a clutch if you really want to test your skills. For those familiar to the Forza series, the rewind function is also back which I love, as there’s nothing more frustrating than winning for a whole race to muck up the last corner and come third. Yes, I know this may be unrealistic, but I for one am happy with the mulligan philosophy and getting a free drop. The game is visually stunning and Turn 10, the game’s developers, have really focused on making sure there’s no
compromise on frame rates. As such, there aren’t extreme changing weather conditions to negotiate during a race, but you can race certain tracks at different times of the day. The audio has also had a revamp and is fully adjustable for you to focus on how much your tyres are skidding, to how much you’re pushing your gear ratio/engine. The audio characteristics also change when you upgrade your exhaust/pistons/etc. Customisation of the cars is always fun, although I don’t get much chance to admire my handiwork as I race from the in-car view (which, I should add, offers fantastic attention to detail). I’d love to have three screens set up as well as the purpose-designed Forza 4 steering wheel and pedals and let rip my inner Lewis Hamilton. For me racing games can get a bit repetitive, but at least Forza mixes it up with various challenges. Take on knocking down pins on the Top Gear track to racing an opponent on roads navigating around unsuspecting Sunday drivers. It’s a real challenge to Gran Turismo’s crown, and I have to say with this installment I prefer Forza 4. Written by Jon Snow

album reviews Batucada Sound Machine Don’ t Keep Silent llll
BSM came together at SuperCityLand’s Galatos Bar early in the century, and have been kickin’ it ever since. They’ve pretty much been travelling the world and playing a funky blend of Latin, drummer based grooves with ties to the hip shakin’ Rio style party music. This is their second studio effort – mixed by Bob ‘Bassy’ Brockman, it’s a full agenda of sweaty rhythmic soul and stompin’ Brazilian beats. The pick of the tunes would be ‘My Heart He Say’ with a mix of high-energy samba and Santana-styled guitar licks. That said, these guys bounce all over the globe, musically, stealing

from virtually every Spanishspeaking dance trend, even including a little ska (‘Un Poquito’) and a few rhymes (‘Traigo Mi Sonido’) in the mix. It’s a bit of a cliché claiming their live act can top a recorded performance, but if you’re around when they tour this summer or attend WOMAD in March you’ll have a chance to validate that for yourself. It’s pretty hard to recommend a three-track EP from some guy who no one has ever heard of. But bear with me. Perfect Hair Forever is pure bedroom rock. The Aucklandbased one-man band sings stupid songs about 1960s teenage love that you’re surprised you actually like. The lo-fi tracks sound like they’ve been recorded to tape in a gritty Texas bedroom by a lovelorn little 16-year-old girl who doesn’t know how to make the heartbreak stop. On Girls In Love, PHF’s influences are much the same as his previous mini-EPs. The likes of Paul Peterson, Buddy Holly and Coen brothers soundtracks shine through the raspy layers of adolescent lyrics. ‘My Teen Idol’ is straight out of a John Waters film, ‘Miss Georgina Rizk’ screams nothing but cowboys crossing the desert and finisher ‘Me & You’ deserves to be played at your high school prom when the king and queen have been crowned. Do cowboys sway? Because they would to this.
The Broken Needles are a rock’n’roll band from North Queensland, Australia. They don’t suffer fools, are easily annoyed, and don’t have a sense of humour. They are also influenced heavily by The Black Keys, The Stones, Steve Earle, Nick Cave and The White Stripes, though that may never be admitted in public. Terra Nullius is the Townsville-based quartet’s long-awaited debut that they describe as “A muscle car ride from a desolate, empty landscape to the southern capital cities of Australia, filtered through lead-singer Mick Galloway’s decadent and depraved mind.” But scrape away the obese pontifications and you’ll discover there a few gems amongst the rough and frayed, with more than a nod to Neil Young (‘I am not the Resurrection’, ’Abattoir Song’). Ultimately it’s a mixed bag. With good editing it’d make a worthy EP.
In the vain attempt of recapturing the magic of Rancid and The Clash come The Tearaways from Melbourne. They blast out no-frills punk rock on their latest LP with sprinklings of ska and country present as well, making this bunch just a tad more interesting than your average chancers. The band doesn’t pretend to be original, but what they lack in a unique sound they kind of make up for in passion and some catchy tunes. They do best on their most frenzied tracks such as the Exploitedesque hardcore ‘Silent World’. However, they should really loose the squirm-inducing rockabilly overtones clinging to this record like a bad tribute to Strummer and his Mescaleros. This group is doomed to be merely a tight tribute act to the aforementioned bands, but maybe they don’t even care? If you like straight up punk and tried and tested formulas, you’ll probably get a kick outta this.
You’ve heard of him, but can’t name any of his songs. He was playing down the road one night, but you didn’t go. Lindon Puffin occupies a strange space in NZ music, existing on the underground circuit while writing songs aimed squarely at the mainstream. Hope Holiday confirms his knack for a straight-up tune, and though it’s a respectable offering of rootsy pop songcraft, there’s little on here that seems like it will be the one to break through to the masses. Joined by an able crew of musicians operating as The Transgressions, Puffin’s latest album lacks the hooks to be truly memorable in the way that, say, Liam Finn manages. The subtle electro touches can’t disguise a lack of variety, and though Hope Holiday features a fantastic graphic package (including the stunning back cover shot of Puffin silhouetted against a vast cityscape), the songs inside don’t quite reach the same heights.

on screen Hugo FILM llll
When he’s not making quality films, Martin Scorsese has spent an admirable amount of time restoring them. His latest effort, a 1930s-set fantasy taking a Philip Pullman-ish approach to cinema history, combines both passions with aplomb. In a pop-up book Paris beautifully rendered in shimmering CG, Hugo (Asa
Butterfield) is a lonely orphan who lives in the walls of a train station, keeping the clocks wound while concealing his presence from the gammylegged inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen). We first meet our hero speeding through the Potteresque platforms in order to steal parts from an embittered toymaker (Ben Kingsley) and

film
When Tinker Tailor sweeps this year’s award nominations as it surely will – this is a film that screams quality – the one it most deserves will be missing: Best Supporting Mote. Adapted from John Le Carré’s Cold War spy novel, Tomas Alfredson’s follow-up to Let The Right One In is thick with dust, must and ash, its ageing agents suffocating in waves of grey as they try to root out the Russian mole “muddying the waters” at M16. Is there any point? As Gary Oldman’s creased George Smiley puts it: “There’s as little worth on your side as there is on mine.” With its austere atmosphere, glacial pace and longwinded plot, it’s not a film for everyone. The most exciting setpiece takes place in a library, and no one
that includes a show-stopping clockwork nightmare and Cohen’s ashamed admission: “I was injured in the war – it will never heal…” Hugo is aimed at Scorseses-in-the-making rather than the mass market. It’s not an adventure, but a loving tribute to all the broken things, and those who would fix them.

repair the mysterious automaton his inventor father (Jude Law) left him. But could there be a connection between the two? Well, yes… but it’s not Hugo’s underwhelming plight that Scorsese’s concerned with. Instead, he takes the opportunity to celebrate the pioneers of his beloved medium, revisiting long-forgotten films (1902’s A Trip To The Moon) in glorious 3D and remembering long-forsaken film-makers (Georges Méliès, the Lumière Brothers) along the way. At one point Hugo dangles precariously from a clock face like silent comedian Harold Lloyd (and Doc Brown!) before him, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is kids’ stuff. Besides a seam of darkness
cracks out the Bourne moves. But there’s plenty for connoisseurs to savour, and all the time in the world to do so with the running time shorter than the Cold War itself. Oldman leads one of the best British casts ever assembled in this film which has a terrible sadness that seeps deep into your bones. This isn’t Dr No or In Like Flint, it’s the prolonged and messy end of an era. Each chance of renewal (a mother suckling her baby, a bird swooping from the fireplace) gets violently snuffed out. And those dusty swirls aren’t just stylised visuals, they’re the ghosts of wasted lives. Seems some spies never did come in from the cold. Written by Matt Glasby, Flicks.co.nz
You don’t have to be a horse person to enjoy this gentle documentary but it would probably help. Buck Brannaman’s life story seems ready made for the movies, so it’s little surprise he was partial inspiration for Robert Redford’s character in The Horse Whisperer. Buck doesn’t actually whisper at the horses he tames in the workshops he hosts all over America; it’s more of an unspoken offering of understanding. But it gets results. The film uses Buck’s story to make universally relevant points about the power of empathy and compassion. When we learn of Buck’s abusive upbringing, TV footage of his youthful self doing rope tricks takes on tragic proportions.
Whilst this remains reasonably captivating for its first hour, it kinda runs out of steam after that, suggesting there wasn’t quite enough to justify a full-length movie. Watching Buck run his workshops is entertaining, only up to a point, but his story remains a heartfelt exploration of a gentle soul and a relevant reminder to be nice to the animals.
