Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords fame has received an Oscar nomination for his original song ‘Man or Muppet’ that featured in The Muppets, for which he was the music supervisor. He goes up against Sergio Mendes for ‘Real in Rio’ from Rio. This does beg one to question why there are only two nominees up for the Best Original Song Oscar, but that’s all to do with boring statistics and voting and rating systems. Disney created a Joy Division inspired t-shirt combining the iconic mouse logo with the cover art from Unknown Pleasures. The shirt sold out in a couple of days, but hot damn if it doesn’t look cool. Record label Matador made a short 16-second video advertisement to promote the new album from Perfume Genius Put Your Back N 2 It, but the video was not able to be uploaded to YouTube due to the fact it was “promoting mature sexual themes” and “not family safe”. The video shows Perfume Genius’ Mike Hadreas giving gay pornstar Arpad Miklos a loving cuddle. The two had previously worked together in the video for ‘The Hood’ which came under a bit of fire for the homosexual themes, but Hadreas told Pitchfork, “...If Rick in Pittsburgh

If you were around in the mid ‘90s you may remember a little band called Garbage with such hits as ‘Stupid Girl’ and ‘I’m Only Happy When It Rains’. Giants VS Patriots
It might be in another country and it might not be the biggest sport in the land of the long white cloud, but the Superbowl XLVI Indianapolis goes down Monday New
Zealand time and it’ll be a big one no matter where in the world you are. The New England Patriots take on the New York Giants in that game that looks like rugby with more protection, and you’re advised to get your Yank on and get plenty of hotdogs with a shitload of mustard and ketchup, some Cheetos, some Doritos, some nachos, some popcorn, some Budweiser and some football jerseys and everything else stereotypically American. As well as plenty of bars around whatever town you happen to be in, the 46th Superbowl will be screening on ESPN from 8am on Monday 06 February with four hours of build up and ceremony, with kick off at midday. If that’s a little early for all that beer and junk food, catch the replay at 6pm.
Production Values They might not be as extravagant as the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards, but the Producers Guild of America Awards tend to be a very influential set of award ceremonies. More often than not, the titular winner of the Theatrical Motion Pictures award will win the Oscar for that year. And while these awards celebrate the producers as opposed to perhaps the actors, directors or finished product itself, what they represent is still worthy of note. So without naming the producers’ names that you probably won’t have heard of anyway, we’ll tell you what title took the win in each category: The Artist took the Theatrical Motion
Pictures award; The Adventures of Tintin took the Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures award; Downton Abbey took the Long-Form Television award; Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest took the Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures award; Modern Family took the Episodic Television in Comedy award; Boardwalk Empire took the Episodic Television in Drama award; and The Colbert Report took the Live Entertainment & Talk Television award. Most noteworthy of these is, of course, the Theatrical Motion Pictures award winner – in this case, The Artist. This film also took the Cannes Palme d’Or, further forecasting the likelihood of an Oscar win. Watch this space.

The wayward sons of New Zealand rock play their final show of their summer tour down at Wellington’s San Fran Bath House this Thursday. This will be your last chance to catch Cambridge’s finest before the award-winning Dolf, Phil, Ben and Christian release their upcoming (and as of yet untitled) fifth album.
The Audio Foundation’s AltMusic 2012 season kicks off with USA-based Emeralds guitarist Mark McGuire – the 25-year-old who boasts 30 albums under his belt. The best description we’ve heard of his music has to be that it “has a pastoral quality both meditative and mind-zapping – amazing to listen to while stoned”.

The writer of Milk has teamed up with everyone’s favourite angry-old-man-director Clint Eastwood to tell the story of the face of American law enforcement. J. Edgar boasts a stellar cast with Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, Ed Westwick, Dame Judi Dench and more.

We highlighted this film last week with much anticipation. If you were a teenager who discovered you had superpowers, wouldn’t you do stupid shit and film all of it? Of course you would. But then you’d turn evil, because puberty is AWFUL.
The director of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and the writer of Death at a Funeral team up for this Aussie-Brit comedy that will be awkward and hard to watch, but in a good way like watching Ricky Gervais do anything.

From the writer of Super City comes this comedy concerning criminal camaraderie. Amateur crim Willy gets busted shoplifting, resulting in his descent into a whirlpool of lies and deceit on the run from the 5-0. When Willy runs into fellow-in-stolen-arms Louis, the two could very well become criminal masterminds. Or fail completely.

You think that just because men slick their hair back, shave daily and wear a tailored suit or women read Vogue, are totally “in season” and can walk in stilettos... you think that makes them fancy? Wrong. Fancy is the opera. The Chinese opera. The NZSO doing a Chinese New Year Concert opera. That shit is fancy.
Can we just take one minute to have a collective laugh at Lloyd’s album names and song titles? Street Love and King of Hearts are great names for albums. A little arrogant, but they couldn’t get any more r’n’b than that. ‘How We Do It (Around My Way)’ and ‘Dedication to My Ex (Miss That)’? ADORABLE.

It’s weird to actually get into a festival about lanterns. What’s so great about them? The fact remains that every time you see those creatively crafted contraptions with a flickering light inside, you get all lovey-dovey and hold hands with the person you’re on a date with (or your friend who gets creeped out).

Gin’s in fine form after a day of drinking ginger tea and taking interviews from her Sydney home base. I’m last on the list but there’s no jaded lady on the end of this phone. “I like to fucking talk. Tell me something interesting,” she banters. Actually, I want her to tell ME something interesting. We chat about the Big Day Out gig just gone. “Yeah, that was kind of weird,” she says in reference to the crowd. “It was really the Small Day Out. It was weird, ‘cause I’ve been going since I was fucking 15, and usually everyone’s jostling around texting cause you can’t find each other.” I ask how it feels to be on the stage of your youth; on the other side as it were. “Yeah, still a blast. Though I was more interested in performing than reflecting on the experience!” Speaking of performing, Gin’s planning to get on the road following the Aussie release of Gravel and Wine before heading off to the States. “US crowds are so keen,” she enthuses. “They come at the beginning of the night and want to see the support act; they’re keen for new music. Touring in America, everything’s well set up there, it’s all organised.” It was during her last sojourn to the States that Gin pulled together material to record Gravel and Wine. Many of the elements that fed her music came from experiences like attending a full-on Gospel church service led by the Rev Al Green, and an unexpected ‘date’ with a small town gentleman. “I was in this tiny town of Clarksdale in the Deep South, Mississippi,” she recalls. “You know, it had one old shop. I bought this guitar and this guy, he must have been the only person in the town, he was furious I’d bought it. He wanted it for himself. I told him I’d buy him lunch as a consolation. He invited me to go see some cornfields and a BBQ. We drove out in his old car and got to a bar. He pulled out his pistol and thumped it on the fucking bar and says, ‘What do you think of that?’ He was asking me out on a date! Whoa!”
Turns out it’s tales like that and encounters with other Southern folk which played a huge part in the colour of this album. “These old guys say, ‘You from Nu Zeeland, You don’t know the blues. Yo Rich! Yo gotta be poor.’ I was just there to learn, you know.” It seems, though, that Gin took it all in her stride. “I got down to it and started writing, working my nails down writing with every joker, including a guy called Charlie who plays for a guy called Bob, to get it all out,” she says. “Writing is cathartic. In my songs I’m slashing my lovers, digging the graves and burying them, drinking my self to death and then I’m done!” – a tradition she started way back when she won the International Song Writing contest in 2004 with a song about her late father (‘Hallelujah’). I’d noticed most of her material was about dark and torrid love, yet as a person she was so upbeat and chirpy. Was there a happy song in there? “I dunno, but your suggestion of more ukulele numbers with a Hawaiian feel is a possibility.” No such luck on the new album though, a genuine product of her road trip. When she finally swerved into beachside Santa Monica to record with Butch Walker and Jake Sinclair, there were 11 ‘tip top’ songs ready, “That have the love of a cowboy, bathed in a little lonesome blues… and the swagger of a woman past midnight.” It’s those songs that will feature on the upcoming Classic Hits Winery Tour, a 13-date event she’ll share with The Mutton Birds and Avalanche City. “I grew up a big The Mutton Birds fan so I’m excited to play with them. And Dave (Baxter, Avalanche City) is so hot right now. It’s a great line-up. We’re on the road for a month in summer, with a wine bar at every stop. Can’t wait!” WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

As demonstrators gather in their thousands in Syria, and the Arab Spring Tide sweeps a sea-change of power across the Middle East, John Butler’s words sound eerily prophetic. “Take back your feet, take back your hands. Take back your words, take back your lands,” Butler sings on ‘Revolution’, the hit single from 2010’s April Uprising. “I guess in one way or another revolution – people standing up for their own sovereignty and getting their own justice – has always been a big part of how I see the world,” says the talented frontman. “People taking back their futures and their own realities and not letting other people decide it for them.” Butler wasn’t singing then about the liberation of the Arab world –the song was written in 2009, a year before protesters filled the streets of Tunisia – but instead about his own history. “My great-great-grandfather was part of an uprising called the April Uprising in 1875, to emancipate his people from the oppression of the Ottoman Empire,” Butler says with audible pride. But that was only the start of April’s significance for him. 100 years later, on April 1 1975, John Butler was born. In April 2009 he broke up the last trio, bringing in bassist Byron Luiters and drummer Nicky Bomba; and in April 2010 their new album was released. “So April Uprising became this metaphor for change and spiritual revolution, musical revolution, personal revolution,” Butler says. As influential as his past was on the album – “it definitely changed who I was,” he reflects – it served more as a positive affirmation than a total rebirth. “When you discover your roots it makes your tree a lot stronger,” he says. That reinforcement would provide a foundation for the record, which builds on Butler’s trademark potpourri of blues, rock and roots. Those influences still abound, but Butler’s new affinity for songwriting delivers a refined sound not heard in earlier work. “The biggest, most conscious change was just trimming all the fat off everything,” he says. “I just wanted to see if I could write good songs that held water by themselves.”
Grand instrumental arrangements stretched to 10 and 20 minutes on previous releases, but April Uprising is an exercise in poetic restraint. “As much as I’m very much into elongated musical movements, this time around I wasn’t fully inspired to do that,” comments Butler. “It’s saying a lot more with fewer words, in a less naïve and obvious way.” So while the ingredients are vintage John Butler, the approach was distinctly new. New too was the level of involvement by his band-mates, whose fingerprints are more visible than on any album before. “I don’t care if it’s Byron’s idea, or John’s idea, or Nicky’s idea, or my wife’s idea. Whatever sounds good is all that matters. “That’s one thing that has become more and more important as I continue being a musician and a performer and a recording artist: I’m not really in charge, the song is in charge,” says Butler. “It’s always a good thing to remember – serve the song, don’t let the song serve you.” October 2011 sees the three-piece coming off a three and a half month tour of Europe, Brazil and North America, and Butler says their road act is better than it has ever been. “We’ve really hit our stride and it’s consistently a lot of fun.” Their shows are a delight to behold, as between them they burn through a veritable orchestra of stringed instruments – featuring banjos, 12 strings and lap steel guitars, and double basses. The excitement on stage is palpable, and it shows in their faces as they swap grins on extended percussive jams. “It’s about being in the moment and trying to let whatever is coming through come through as purely as possible. I never know what that is; all I know is that when I’m present and in that moment the good stuff comes. That’s not something that you can just make happen,” Butler says. New Zealand audiences got a taste of that magic at the Big Day Out last year, and Butler says he’s excited to return in February for the More FM Summer Vineyard Tour. “I’m excited because I get to spent more than a week in Aotearoa,” he tells me. “New Zealand’s a beautiful country, and it’s so rare to able to actually play outdoors, in New Zealand, at that time of year.”

Death Cab For Cutie bassist Nick Harmer talked to Kevin Kartun about coming to our shores for for the first time to play at the New Zealand International Arts Festival, and what the band can expect from Kiwi fans.
“Over the years everybody’s been really nice to us which is great. I feel like we’ve got a good rapport with our fans and we haven’t had anyone get weird. I think we’re pretty lucky in that regard. But it’s always nice to meet people after the show and say hi. We try our best to shake hands and say hello.” So says Death Cab For Cutie’s Nick Harmer, the bassist of a band that has around 15 years of label hopping and indie royalty under its belt. Fandom would, of course, come in waves for the Seattle band. After being signed to the likes of Sub-Pop, Atlantic, Warner and more, their latest release Codes And Keys has brought the often loved band back from the forgotten corners of many musical minds. Seven studio releases over 14 years may not be perceived as a significant number of endeavours, but Death Cab may very well be known more for their live performances than their back catalogue. A perfect example can be seen in their live video of ‘You Are A Tourist’ which was the first ever scripted, single-take music video production to be broadcast live as it was filmed. Part marketing strategy and part art for art’s sake, the video was a hit with Death Cab fans new and old alike. Critics’ opinions of the video were fell on both sides of the fence, but a resounding appreciation for the concept and execution was heard throughout the blogosphere. When it comes to New Zealand, Harmer’s understanding of the country is as common as most foreigners who have never visited. “Are the Flight of the Conchords guys national treasures? I hear their faces are going on money,” he jokes. The one-off show at the New Zealand International Arts Festival on
Wednesday 01 February will be the first time that the band has played in New Zealand in their 15-odd years of touring. “I’m really excited,” says Harmer, “we’ve had lots of friends that have gone over and it’s actually shameful that we’ve been to Australia so many times but this is only our first time [in NZ].” Harmer says that he and the rest of the Death Cab crew are hoping to get some time in travelling around the country, but with as for any major international act, their time here will be stretched thin. “From Australia we’re going to New Zealand and from there we’re going to do some Southeast Asia shows. I hope long enough that we can see some of the country and explore a little bit.” I go back to the idea of the wide array of fans of the band. Having been one of the originators of the indie-pop sound that made waves in the early 21st century and growing into an international act that has the capability, budget and a much-needed audience to pull off something like the live-stream of ‘You Are A Tourist’, sided by the fact that they just look like good dudes, I’m convinced that Death Cab are the approachable boys of alt-rock kingdom. So what’s the best way to get an autograph, shake a hand or see some babies get kissed? “I would say just come down to the venue early. Whenever we get to a new place and we’re not really sure where to go we definitely like to explore, but we always just hang around near the venue.” And has that friendliness ever got them in trouble? Has, for example, a fan ever sent the band a Polaroid of one of the members’ lips? “What, like when we’re sleeping?” Harmer laughs, “No. Nothing crazy like that. Nothing too insane.” See them live: Death Cab For Cutie (US) performing at the New Zealand International Arts Festival Wed 29 Feb Town Hall, Wellington

GAMING Gaming vs. Movies & Music Why is gaming taking all our moneys?
As a musician, gamer and avid filmgoer, the similarities and differences of the markets have had me thinking a lot recently that the movie and music industries could probably learn a lot from the gaming world right now. I had no idea when I started investigating this just how colossal the gaming industry has become. Some of the figures I’ve found are mindboggling, and I’ve come to realise that my iPhone and Mac calculators can’t even cope with the numbers being generated. For example in November last year, the multi-platform release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 saw it set a new five-day entertainment record, grossing $775 million globally. Before I get too carried away with stats though, it’s no secret that the music and movie industries have been struggling to find new models to deal with the advent of the digital age, and as such digital consumerism. CD sales have been in decline for years, and are fast becoming an archaic luxury item such as vinyl. Box office sales have likewise been falling. The question is – why? The cost of going to the cinema is now ludicrous more often than not, and although 3D (when used effectively) is worth the trip, simply adding it on after the movie is shot and charging $20 to see it makes me feel like Peter Griffin after a prostate exam. On the other hand, there are films that you enjoy more when seeing them at the cinema. A movie like Drive, for example, is well worth the cinematic experience, immersing yourself in the whole surroundsound and large screen experience; seeing and participating in the film according to the director’s wishes. Price isn’t the be all and end all on the audio side of things, but Napster made music essentially worthless for a while by the ease of downloading for free. This, I would venture though, was a direct backlash to the unaffordable prices (especially for kids) of buying music. Movies are having their own Napster moment, with torrenting or .rar file-sharing sites (and you know you’ve used them, you dirty little downloader you). A separate issue is the ridiculous nature of staggered global film releases. The same
has to be said for TV shows, where at least with the advent of the Soho channel we’ll only be two weeks behind the US for Game of Thrones in April. Is two weeks a long time to wait? If you’re a diehard fan, then the answer is a resounding “fuck yes”, especially when the films and shows are available on a raft of websites – Kim Dotcom anyone? Now look at gaming. A game has a worldwide release date, and stores do the midnight opening thing to make sure that fans can get hold of what they want, exactly when they want it, before everyone else. They also add value to their products by providing an online community and free downloadable content (DLC), which enhances the games if you purchase them legitimately. Not only does this make you want to buy the proper game, but also the DLCs can cost around $15, which ends up netting the developers even more cash for something that back in the day they probably would’ve just had in the game anyway.
Price is not a factor given you deliver what the consumer wants, which can be seen with games like Wii Sports Resort having an RRP of around $130. So what does this mean according to numbers that bigwig suits understand? Apologies for my rudimentary math, but I’m just using these figures to make a point, not for historical accuracy. Adele’s album 21 topped the charts for 2011 selling 15.3 million units globally, which at an average of $19/unit comes to over $290 million. Comparatively in the movie world Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 raked in almost $467 million. Call of Duty: MW3 on Xbox 360 and PS3 alone raked in more than $2.7 billion (units sold globally multiplied by RRP of $119). Top 10 gross figures in
each industry combined of 2011 were (approximately); Music – $870 million; Movies – $3 billion and gaming way out ahead on $8 billion (yes, $8 billion). You also have to factor in, though, that people have initially bought the hardware to play these games on. Nintendo have sold 94.7 million Wii consoles to date, leading Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo 3DS on 64.2 million, 61 million and 15.3 million respectively (according to vgchartz.com). It really is just an astronomical growth industry with no signs of slowing. It is interesting to think that so much of people’s entertainment budget is being invested into gaming, which leads me to ask just why that is. It’s never been cool to be a gamer, but so many of us are now – thanks to our iPhone and Smartphone apps, and an aging console gaming population. Music at least has light at the end of the tunnel in terms of earning revenue for artists. There is the argument that getting someone’s music for free may lead you to buy more of their work in the future, or attend their live shows. However I’m sure most artists would like to see a return on the time, effort and expense that goes into recording and producing their music. Bjork has shown the way forward by adding value through apps. Biophillia was released as an iPad app with each song having its own app contained within it, with bonus content and interactive features. Digital sales now account for a third of the market globally and the advent of cloud servers and subscription-based services could really tip the scales back to legal purchasing of music. Why? Because it’s cheap, easy, and with added value it makes sense to do so. With movies… who knows? Are they going to learn the lessons of Christmases past or plough on believing they can stop the rot that they’re really just pouring water onto rather than drying? What happens when all of our televisions are 3D? Is it finally getting cool to be a gamer? I bet it feels good to be a game developer right now… WRITTEN BY JON SNOW

album reviews First Aid Kit The Lion’s Roar llll
Forget being Bjorn again! This, the second effort from Swedish Söderberg sisters, is a huge improvement on their debut The Big Black and Blue. Produced by Mike Mogis, who also performs on several tracks, it has a slightly darker feel, due in part to contributions from Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and The Felice Brothers. And there’s a definite confidence and maturity in the assured indie-country sound, which draws influence and sustenance from the likes of Laura Marling and Mumford & Sons. The title track has that moody, infectious folk-hook common to the work of Unthank Sisters, while ‘Emmylou’ shows an uncanny mimicry of their idol. Harris

would definitely approve of the journey-like train-clacking percussion and pessimistic optimism in the lyrics. Closer ‘King of the World’ is a satisfying clap-along hoedown, courtesy of Oberst, and some very clever horns and fiddle-dee-dees. But despite the new directions, minor in the in the whole, Klara and Johanna’s singing is still distinctive, clear, and utterly beautiful, especially in their modulated bell-like harmonies. If you aren’t used to British vocalists, you may need the first couple of tracks to adjust on The Big Pink’s Future This. The chorus of ‘Stay Gold’, the album’s first track, is the first hook into the carefully orchestrated sound that has depth, colour and texture. But admittedly, there are times where The Big Pink recklessly walks the line between crowded and perfectly timed. The genre-fusing, electro-rock string combination on Track ‘77’ and the drums of ‘Hit The Ground (Superman)’ are emotionally affecting both lyrically and musically. It’s the consciousness of knowing that rock can be boring that gives this band one of its most beautiful traits – the willingness to push the envelope with a sound that risks being mundane. Future This avoids a collision with banality by incorporating cellos and violins, great lyrics, infectious vocal hooks and choruses that allow the vocals to soar above the music to show off Milo’s ability.
Never known for their subtlety, Biohazard make belligerent groove metal with a heart of furious punk rock like it was going out of fashion. The ‘90s Brooklyn hardcore pioneers sound is reinvigorated by the return to their original line-up for this, their ninth album. Singer Evan Seinfeld still barks like a junkyard dog, and his lyrics are as blunt and artless as they have ever been. The placid intro to ‘Killing Me’ is startling in its softness, but it does not last very long and is usurped by the forced rap metal of ‘Countdown Doom’. Reborn in Defiance is a throwback to the early to mid ‘90s when bands like Anthrax, Helmet, and Butthole Surfers ruled MTV. The reunion of this band, however, was shortlived; Seinfeld has already left to once again turn his attention to the adult film industry.
It’s tough to make the call and say that REM are money-grabbing with this record – a double album that spans their career history, picking and choosing a healthy dose of the obscure and the wildly popular. With any band’s implosion or split comes a desperate attempt by their label to milk the last of the cash cow, and any cynic could approach Part Lies with that mindset, but the liner notes tell a different story; band members past and present, including an occasional non-committal paragraph from Michael Stipe, recall spikier tracks like the Letterman-only ‘So. Central Rain’ with the same breath of vitality as mega-hit ‘Losing My Religion’. Rather than squeeze every last dollar from the break up, Part Lies is intended as a stopend to their career, something that stands a testament and true

David Fincher’s made some strange career choices (Benjamin Button anyone?), but adapting Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Scandinavian door-stopper might well be the weirdest. For one thing it’s already been done, pretty well, in 2009. For another, the first half of the story – a rather lame murder mystery enlivened by a
fascinating central character in troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander (Mara) – is 90% exposition meets 10% sexual assault. Fincher’s also retained the book’s Swedish setting and names, so it’s not even a sop to the subtitle-averse. So what can we expect from this spruced-up Swenglish version, besides more product placement? For the first hour,

It’s rare for a director to strike the right chord with every film, but Alexander Payne has seemingly managed it. Moving on from his success with Sideways, Election and About Schmidt, The Descendants will leave you with the same admiration for the guy: he knows how to write about middle-aged men in a slump. George Clooney is his new fall guy, Matt King, and the actor expertly shucks off his cocksure swagger to play a hands-off dad confronting loss, responsibility and history in an extraordinarily nuanced performance. And as much as Matt’s character sees his island ‘paradise’ as a myth, the stunning backdrop of Hawaii makes for a much more eyepleasing setting than most.
crackles, and Fincher has a real talent for making people looking through files seem fascinating (see Zodiac). Although the excitement subsides after a terrific early climax, it’s an effective, if unfathomable, entry in the Fincher canon. If you’ve seen the original, knock a star off the rating. If you haven’t seen either, watch this one.

disappointingly little. As before, nobody seems willing to snip Larsson’s narrative string, so we trudge through a series of wearying introductions to interchangeable old men (Plummer, Berkoff, Skarsgard), each of whom has a long-buried secret. No scene lasts longer than 30 seconds except those depicting Salander getting abused, which feel endless. It is, to put it lightly, a difficult watch. Although Craig is a commanding presence as crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist, it’s not until he and Salander join forces that film emerges from its predecessor’s shadow. When it does, it’s riveting – the leads’ strange chemistry (think little girl lost meets handsome dad)
The complexity of Matt’s predicament is handled with wit, grace and often disgrace, each of the family forced to work together and, at times, suppress their true desires in lieu of the greater good. Even the supposedly superficial characters – Alex’s stoner friend Sid and the sunny wife of Matt’s wife’s lover – emerge as threedimensional humans trying to forge the best path through life’s rough patches. Payne says he hates sentimentality and other than a few drawn-out tearjerker moments towards the end The Descendants’ crude-talking kids subvert any mushiness. But for the most part this is a moving tale. Written by Rebecca Barry Hill, Flicks.co.nz
I am not a fan of the previous films by screenwriter Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) or director Jason Reitman (Up In The Air), and their last collaboration together (Juno) was hardly the Second Coming. So I went into Young Adult without a huge amount of excitement. Turns out though, this is one of the best contemporary dramas to come along in years. Charlize Theron is at her absolute best, playing a shallow and charmless writer who returns to her tiny hometown to awkwardly woo a former flame (Patrick Wilson). Theron is a wonder in this film, and her lack of an Oscar nomination for this is nothing less than criminal. She manages to embrace her character’s awfulness while delivering a raw,
multi-dimensional performance that demands audience empathy. Alternative comedy superstar Patton Oswalt (Big Fan) is great as the schlub she ends up befriending and plenty of talent fill out the supporting roles. This film reminded me somewhat of the underrated dramedy In Her Shoes, another film that shows just how satisfying a well-realised character arc can be. Young Adult doesn’t proffer easy resolutions to the issues it throws up, but there’s something for everyone to relate to here. The only distracting element was the surfeit of fast food product placement, but I guess we should get used to that. Written by Dominic Corry, Flicks.co.nz
