The three nights of performances kick off in Thursday 23 February.

Pennsylvania metallers August Burns Red have announced two shows in April and they’re bringing along Arizona’s explosive Blessthefall with them. And since the good promoters over at Chicks That Scream, Blue Murder and Destroy All Lines know how much the kids love the metal these days, under 18s will be able to attend the shows with their parent or legal guardian (but you’ll need ID, so no Ferris Bueller-ing, not that you’re old enough to get that reference). The bands will play at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Saturday 14 April and Wellington’s San Fran Bath House on Sunday 15 April. Tickets on sale Friday 10 February from Real Groovy, Slow Boat and Under The Radar.

Cartoon Network’s BEN 10 LIVE: Time Machine brings Ben 10 characters together for five shows around the coutnry kicking off on Saturday 14 April.

14/02 Heart Star

Make some really romantically boring pun about stars for your valentine this week at Auckland’s Stardome Observatory and Planetarium. “Take an up close look at Venus, named for the god of love. Visit Mars, the Moon and hear stories and poems that pay tribute to the most romantic celestial objects.” If that doesn’t get your motor running, then you’re dead inside. Four shows will go down on Tuesday 14 February, with tickets available from stardome.org.nz. Space is cool and stars are romantic. Done deal.

Applications are now open for the Red Bull Music Academy 2012. The team at the RBMA have said that this year will see the Academy land in New York. Anyone interested in pitching their skills to see if they’ve got what it takes can download an application form from redbullmusicacademy.com and must send it in before Monday 02 April. Concord Dawn is heading on tour to India this week as they spend four dates playing the Bass Camp Festival. David Dallas isn’t done with The Rose Tint yet – he heads to Australia this week to tour the award winning album. Writer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show Richard O’Brien will be holding his 70th birthday concert It’s Party Time at Hamilton’s Founders Theatre on Saturday 17 March with all proceeds going towards Starship Children’s Hospital. Television host and Soul Train creator Don Cornelius was found dead in his California home last week at age 75, supposedly due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The producer worked with blooming artists in the ‘70s and aided in offering exposure to the likes of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson and many more.

The Observer is reporting that Kanye West is looking to shoot a short film in the Middle East, stating sources say, “Mr. West sent members of his team to meet with film companies and government officials based out of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha, Qatar to explore the idea of a production. A number of local municipal officials and film companies are said to be engaged in what was characterised as a heated bidding war for the contracts involved in bringing Mr. West’s vision to life.” St. Vincent will appear on the Valentine’s Day special of Gossip Girl. How many people out there think that this is a mash-up made in heaven?

Sundance Film Festival The 2012 Sundance Film Festival came to a close last month, meaning the plethora of awards were handed out to crown this year’s kings and queens of indie film. The whole list of winners gets a little long, so we’ll just roll with our top three favourites from the list of winners. Safety Not Guaranteed, directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting award: “A trio of magazine employees investigate a classified ad seeking a partner for time travel. One employee develops feelings for the paranoid but compelling loner and seeks to discover what he’s really up to.” The Surrogate, directed by Ben Lewin and starring John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy won the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic award as well as the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting: “Mark O’Brien, a 36-year-old poet and journalist in an iron lung, decides he no longer wishes to be a virgin. With the help of his therapist and the guidance of his priest, he contacts a professional sex surrogate to take him on a journey to manhood.” Beasts of the Southern Wild, directed by Benh Zeitlin and starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry took the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic award and the Excellence in Cinematography Award: U.S. Dramatic as well as a producer’s award: “Waters gonna rise up, wild animals gonna rerun from the grave, and everything south of the levee is goin’ under, in this tale of a six year old named Hushpuppy, who lives with her daddy at the edge of the world.”

Who Wants The Watchmen? You don’t have to be a comics buff to know about a little comic called Watchmen. With the film adaptation released some years ago and creator Alan Moore popping up from time to time voicing his opinion on the comics industry, the film translations and anything to do with the V masks in the Occupy movement, there’s always something going on with the iconic comic. And now, decades after the original, a bunch of new Watchmen have been announced to see the light of day. This one could get fanboys up in arms – last week publisher DC announced that BEFORE WATCHMEN will feature seven miniseries, stating, “As highly anticipated as they are controversial, the seven inter-connected prequel mini-series will build on the foundation of the original WATCHMEN, the bestselling graphic novel of all time.” The company is making an effort to placate the nerd hate with industry stars Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, Hellblazer), Lee Bermejo (Joker), J. Michael Straczynski (Thor, Spider-Man), Len Wein (Swamp Thing, Wolverine) and many more. The seven BEFORE WATCHMEN titles are RORSCHACH (4 issues) with writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo; MINUTEMEN (6 issues) with writer and artist Darwyn Cooke; COMEDIAN (6 issues) with writer Brian Azzarello and artist J.G. Playing two sports professionally isn’t enough for a certain 26-year-old with a shoulder that’s rougher than a brick shit house. Sonny Bill Williams takes on New Orleans-born-cum-Auckland-bound Clarence Tillman III on Wednesday for the New Zealand heavyweight boxing title.

The biggest little dance festival runs right through to Saturday this week in the mix of contemporary, hip hop, dance theatre, belly dancing, multimedia, burlesque and everything else that’s short, sweet and swingin’, as long as the performance is under 10 minutes. See what happens each night this week.

The multi-award winning silent film is one of the front runners in the race to win the big Academy Award this year. Who would have known that a black and white romcom set in the 1920s was what the critics have been after all these years? Clearly French director Michel Hazanavicius did.

On the comedy side of things you’ve got Out Of Bounds Sounds, Battle Of Wits, Part Time Prostitute The Secret Life Of A Wellington Hooker, The No Nonsense Parenting Show and Sexy Old Bags, dance performances from V.O.I.D, Wellington Freelance Dancers, Ab-Surd, Insideout Dance Company, Wellington Circus Trust and Salted Singlet Productions, musical performances from Lorenzo Bühne, Orpheus Choir Of Wellington, T’ruthful Productions, Transit Of Venus, Nervous Doll Dancing, Industrial Burlesque Collective, Sven Olsen’s Brutal Canadian Love Saga, Ready! Steady! Studio!, The Hummingbirds Collective, Adam Page and Mig Money Industries and a crazy amount of theatre productions and visual arts.

There was that period in the 1980s where everybody loved bands from Europe. Enter the extremely attractive duo of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle AKA Roxette, along with their familiarbut-maybe-you-can’t-place-them type songs such as ‘It Must Have Been Love’ and ‘Listen To Your Heart’.

The Exponents, Sharon O’Neill, Annie Crummer, Debbie Harwood, Kim Willoughby, Margaret Urlich, Mental As Anything, Dragon and Shona Laing. That sound pretty damn close to your 1981, right? The only way it couldn’t is if you weren’t around then. Get your nostalgia on with this ‘80s pop line-up.

While there’s definitely plenty of action going down this weekend in Wellington with the countless Fringe performances, you might want to take a breather and watch some fireworks. It’s kind of romantic. Make it an early Valentine’s Day present.

This season promises as much offensive humour and... well, that’s basically all it is, right? Good old fashioned inappropriate humour.

Who are you doing kisses with? Anyone? Or are you going to go to New World with your bananas pointing a certain way or whatever it is that little sub-culture of swingers do? Maybe you’re going to a restaurant? Maybe you’re going to a sextaurant? Maybe you’re buying him body chocolate?

advertorial

Dear diary;

a Valentine’s Day journal entry

Today I went to Peaches and Cream. It’s a sex store. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but then I realised it’s time to be a grown up and not laugh all the time when people bring up sex and sex toys. I feel very mature. I wasn’t sure what to get for Sally. My friend Andy said that maybe I should get her some fluffy handcuffs to spice things up in the boudoir as a joke, but I thought he was really on to something so I went along to the Peaches and Cream store in Newmarket. I didn’t realise how much stuff there actually was available. Turns out there were fluffy handcuffs, but they also had lingerie, toys for me, toys for her, costumes, sexy books (not just that standard magazine style porn), board games and just a crazy amount of way more stuff.

It was surprisingly nice in there. You know how in movies, sex stores always seem seedy? Well, that wasn’t the case here. The people were really friendly. It was a huge relief for my first time. In an adult store, that is. They used words like “adult fun” and “love life” which made it way easier to talk about. I ended up getting the heart shaped edible massage candles. I figure that’s a nice way to softball the idea of bedroom erotica. I got some gift vouchers as well though. I figure after Valentine’s Day, Sally will be keen.

Shit worth listening to

album reviews The Little Willies For the Good Times llll

It’s been six years between albums for this NYC country folk collective, but the hankering for twangy Americana still remains. Norah Jones (piano/vox), Richard Julian (vox), Jim Campilongo (guitar), Lee Alexander (bass) and Dan Rieser (drums) are not really a super group per se, but it’s clear each member has their own solid musical identity outside of the group and they combine to produce some very slick performances on this well thought out covers record. There’s a good sampling of the legends here including a breathless and pleading version of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’, courtesy of Jones, plus Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson and a neat lil’ instrumental from Campilongo. Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) will not be put in a pigeon hole. Yes, he’s black. He may also be a comedian and a self-professed nerd. But it turns out this guy can also rap. We’re not talking Hummers, hoes, and hustle rap; we’re talking eloquent, intelligent, insightful rap. Ruminating on cultural ostracism, racial stereotyping and the front of fame and hip-hop, Gambino takes a proverbial piss in their cornflakes. Lyrics are powerful and refreshingly honest, giving voice to a body of misfits that don’t adhere to particular cultural and social codes of conduct. Gospel sensibilities structure the production style, with electronica and r’n’b bringing it together with undying rhythmic solidarity (no surprise with the likes of ?uestlove on drums). The delicate arrangement and thoughtful air on ‘L.E.S’ counterbalances the dirty bassy sound on ‘You See Me’. Take heed listeners, you will be left wanting more.

A breezy, intimate tribute to the sounds of his childhood, Kisses on the Bottom sees Paul McCartney in nostalgic bliss with a wink in his eye. The former Beatle has crafted an adventurous thread of classic American songs that are sewn together by his timeless croon, with help from Diana Krall’s band to recreate the swing of the ‘20s and ‘30s. Though this may signal his age, Macca wanted to attempt a similar collection with The Beatles all those years ago (something that both Starr and Lennon eventually did themselves in the ‘70s). ‘The Glory of Love’, one of the most timeless American songs, has been given a faithful, jazzy rendition, while the wedding staple ‘Always’ creates a quiet warmth. Also included are two originals, ‘My Valentine’ and ‘Only Our Hearts’, which respectively feature Eric Clapton and Mr. Stevie Wonder on their instruments of prowess. A tender, relaxing Sunday afternoon soundtrack.

lamenting approach to Loretta Lynn’s ‘Fist City’ fails to channel the fury of the original, and has a more mournful tone when it really needs a more twisted and sinister edge. However, the title track’s an endearing rendition of the Kristofferson original, and a good reminder of the gentle Southern charm that that walks tall in many of these songs. In fact, were they not Yankees, this is a group who could even win over the Tennessee sweethearts at the Grand Old Oprey. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

Lost Rockets

Lost Rockets EP lll

Lost Rockets are an Auckland three-piece dedicated to that awesome wall of noise so uniquely projected across the room in Auckland gigs – the kind of noise that slaps you into a trance and leaves you dribbling beer onto your shoe. At first listen their selftitled EP feels like it’s missing something; the driving push doesn’t quite bloom like it does when these songs are played live, and I was left feeling like there was a lack of dynamic in the sound. What redeems a potentially muffled effort is that these songs sound seriously great when played loud. Very loud. To the exclusion of all other sound. Only then can one hear the scorching surge of a song like ‘Son of a Star’. Then you’ll be a convert too. All in all this is a tidy little EP, and please remember: Lost Rockets are not to be listened to quietly. WRITTEN BY JACK GABRIEL

their chemistry so magnetic that their connection and conversations don’t feel scripted. It’s always clear what each of them is feeling, even if it’s not said. Doremus has managed to balance the magic of love with the cruel, blunt forces of the real world. You’ll feel this one like crazy.

Julia’s Eyes

Spain makes some of the best horror movies in the world right now (RECs 1 & 2, The Orphanage) because its film-makers aren’t afraid of lavishing technical finesse on genre flicks. So it is with Julia’s Eyes, a Guillermo Del Toro production with gorgeous, inky-blue cinematography and The Orphanage’s phenomenal Bélen Rueda in the title role. For the first hour director Guillem Morales nudges greatness. The film shows Julia encountering all manner of creepy suspects (the squinty next-door neighbour with a hunchback, the janitor whose name means ‘twilight’) in all manner of darkened corners. There’s a terrific subterranean chase lit only by mobile phone and camera flash, and a great scene in a changing room full of

typical story structure, and instead attempts to portray the most visceral elements of a fragile love affair: the heady rush of excitement, the heartbreak of long distance, and the underlying suspicion many of us come to know when we realise love doesn’t always

conquer all. That may frustrate those expecting a plot with more meat on its bones, as the focus barely wavers from the interior lives of its central couple. But this is an ordinary story told in an extraordinarily beautiful way. It’s no wonder this won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Managing to keep melodrama at a distance, it’s nonetheless impossible not to get swept up in the relationship. None of this would be possible without rising stars Felicity Jones (Cemetery Junction) and Anton Yelchin fully committing to their roles. Their performances are so natural,

witchy blind women, although the way the film equates sightlessness with spookiness veers close to offensive. Come the halfway mark, however, it seems Morales can’t decide between Hitchcockian suspense and outright horror, and the film gives into its heroine’s hysteria. For reasons best known to the scriptwriter, Rueda finds herself alone, blind and helpless in a house she suspects has claimed two lives already. It’s the set-up of a forgettable slasher, rather than something this sophisticated, and though it pays off with some suitably creepy moments, the film never quite manages to claw its credibility back, ending up less than the sum of its excellent parts. WRITTEN BY MATT GLASBY, Flicks.co.nz

Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover has been rightly acclaimed, but as compelling as his performance may be he isn’t able to save this unsatisfying film. Clint Eastwood’s direction lacks focus and pacing which makes J. Edgar’s two-hour-plus running time feel even longer than it is. The quasi-conservative 81-year-old Eastwood proves one half of an exceptionally odd couple directing from a script by Milk’s Dustin Lance Black, which delves into key rumours that swirled around Hoover. The outcome is a film that hints at Hoover’s cross-dressing without acknowledging it directly, and portrays his unusually close relationship with his male assistant as a chaste love affair. But as with Eastwood’s depiction of

Hoover’s many illegalities, this seems to walk a too-cautious line about its subject while still trying to titillate. The biopic doesn’t seem to know exactly what it wants to say about Hoover. Complex? Sure. But exactly how and why aren’t adequately fleshed out, and Black’s script doesn’t do Eastwood’s staid directorial style any favours in flashing back and forth between narratives unfolding in tandem time periods. To make matters worse, DiCaprio may convince under old man makeup, but Armie Hammer and Naomi Watts look distractingly awful. J. Edgar isn’t going to win any awards for its makeup and outside of DiCaprio is unlikely to earn any plaudits. WRITTEN BY STEVE NEWALL, Flicks.co.nz

GAMING Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure GAME REVIEW

“Frozen in our world, alive in theirs” is the catch-phrase used by Activision for Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure, which I think is fitting – what child hasn’t imagined their favourite toy character coming to life? This cool concept comes with a very nifty piece of tech that’s been applied and is a first for the gaming industry. Skylanders is the first cross platform multi-player game. Within your starter kit for RRP$119 you get a Portal of Power, three Skylander Figures (Spyro, Gill Grunt and Trigger Happy), a Skylander Elemental poster, three trading cards, three web codes and a sticker sheet. The portal of Power is a platform on which the characters are placed. Each character represents your gaming avatar and literally comes to life in the game as you place it on the portal. Further to this, your character becomes your save unit. All of your achievements and upgrades are saved to the individual character rather than the hard drive. This means that if you have a PS3 and your mate has a 360 or Wii, you can take your characters around to their house, plonk them on their portal and away you go. The downside of having all this data stored on the characters is the very real threat of losing them, less you lose all your hard work. There’s a rumour of silver limited edition characters that become valuable in their own right. Although the main storyline of the game can be completed

with the three characters supplied in the starter kit, there are challenges in the game that require specific character’s abilities in order to complete them. During the game there are some not-too-subtle selling techniques to let you know that you need a different character. A triple pack of new characters will cost you around $39.99 so it’s not too bad – although there are 29 others to collect. The gameplay is no doubt aimed at around the younger market and is relatively similar to the Lego franchise we’ve seen over the years. Run around killing enemies, earning gold and special hats such as a saucepan to increase your abilities. The tech adds that something else to keep you interested, and the fact that it’s multi-player is a bonus. It becomes second nature to reach down and change over your characters on the portal when needed and is an integral part of the game. It does tug at you to buy more characters to complete the quests, so not only is it a great tech concept but also a unique marketing one. This is definitely targeted for children and also parents to play it with their kids. The storyline is written by the peeps behind Toy Story, the music is by Hans Zimmer (Inception/Gladiator/ The Dark Knight) and one of the characters is voiced by Patrick Warbuton (Joe from Family Guy/ Rules of Engagement).
