Shit worth announcing

Breaking news  Sunday brought the sad news that Whitney Houston passed away. As we go to print the details of her death have been put on security hold, but a statement said that no foul play had been suspected.

Announcements Woo-hoo

One of the very best (and certainly most recognisable) rockabilly Japanese bands around today, The 5.6.7.8s have announced two shows in New Zealand coming up this April. The band has been around for some 25 years and it’s not their first visit to the country. We can only hope it won’t be their last either. The trio that made that Kill Bill scene so much cooler play at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Friday 27 April and at Bodega in Wellington on Saturday 28 April. Tickets are on sale now from Under The Radar

 Adele has swept the 2012 Grammy Awards with six wins.  British band Elbow have announced a second show following their first gig selling out. Auckland’s Powerstation will host the band again on Thu 29 Mar.

27/04

 American alt-country gal Eilen Jewell has announced a show in Wellington at Bodega on Fri 16 Mar and at Auckland’s Powerstation on Sat 17 Mar.

Living Legends

When the press release came through for The Sonics we had to do a little double take. How amazing will this show be? The guys are garage rock originators. When rhythm and blues was finding its way in the ‘60s these guys took a different approach and pioneered the sound of distortion we love today. After four decades of hiatus, the band got back together and now they’re playing one very special show at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Wednesday 18 April.

 ‘90s r&b trio Bell Biv Devoe have announced an all ages show at the Auckland Town Hall on Mon 28 May.  The Black Dahlia Murder have announced a solo show in Wellington at Bodega on Thu 08 Mar.

18/04

23/02 Memory lane

Florida rockers A Day To Remember have announced a one-off show as they make the jump from Soundwave. The five-piece will play with an impressive line-up consisting of Antagonist A.D, Snakes Of Iron and ‘Til Death Do Us Party on Thursday 23 February at Auckland’s Logan Campbell Centre for an all ages and licensed gig. Tickets are on sale now from Ticketmaster and Under The Radar.

Fly High

Auckland bar Flight Lounge is starting the everpopular Wednesday night party back up this month. Wednesday 29 February (a special day already) will see the first Flight Lounge Wednesday for the year kick off with Computers Want Me Dead, General Lee, Sam Hill, Wade Marriner and Staple all on show. Kick off at 10pm and it’s free. Your midweek moanings are sorted.

Ball This Way

Much to the delight of many folks around the country (in secret or not) Lady Gaga has announced she will be bringing her “Electro-Metal Pop-Opera” to New Zealand for a one off show later this year. Auckland’s Vector Arena will host The Born This Way Ball Starring Lady Gaga on Thursday 07 June as the pop star takes the tour around the globe. Tickets will be available from livenation.com.au on Friday 17 February, and it’s a fair bet to wager that this one will sell out.

The duo will play five show around the country as they hit Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, Wanganui and Hamilton with a rotating line-up of Psych Tigers, The River Jones, Valdera, Hollywoodfun Downstairs and more.

The experimentalists will play at Wellington’s Bodega on Tuesday 27 March and at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Wednesday 28 March. Tickets are available now from Under The Radar.

Hey, it looks like a good festival with Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, The Gaslight Anthem, Cage the Elephant, Fucked Up, Hot Snakes, Gary Clark Jr., Lucero, Roky Erickson, The Black Angels, The Sword, A Place to Bury Strangers and Liturgy joining the aforementioned names, but it’s not really “metal only”, is it. The Auckland art scene will come alive this week with the launch of the city’s newest arts festival. The New Performance Festival runs from Friday 17 February through to Saturday 25 February and is bringing in talent from around the globe. German documentary theatre mavericks Rimini Protokoll, join fellow award winning artists 2b theatre company, Fleur Elise Noble and auteurs Frank Van De Ven and Peter Snow at The Edge over the next week and a half. Here’s a brief rundown of what to expect from the festival: Rimini Protokoll’s exploration of outsourcing work to low-cost countries Call Cutta In A Box arrives on the tail end of a three year awardwinning world tour. A complete overhaul of what audiences expect from performance, Call Cutta In A Box works with real people in real situations. This highly anticipated season marks the company’s first time in New Zealand. The season is presented in association with the Goethe-Institut with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office. Canadian collective 2b theatre company bring their celebrated work Invisible Atom. The one man show dabbles in scenarios such as economics, confidence crisis, ethics and physics.

An affecting story of personal tragedy from some of Canada’s most innovative and thought provoking theatre practitioners. One of the darlings of the new performance scene Fleur Elise Noble’s 2 Dimensional Life of Her makes intricate sketches come to life with projections, performance art and puppetry. As Noble loses control of her creations suddenly absolutely anything becomes possible. Frank van de Ven and Peter Snow bring their famed The Death of Agency as part of their Thought/Action series. Described as a performance research investigation, The Death of Agency demonstrates the duo’s aesthetic at work.

Film news The international trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man hit the web last week much to our delight. After speculation from fanboys and fangirls alike, the trailer seemed to deliver on the anticipation fans have been marinating themselves in. After the God-awful piece of so-called “cinema” that was Spider-Man 3, the reboot delivers a darker tone with the comical side of Spidey that we know and love. It’s a given that the two most hyped superhero films of the year are The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, but it looks like the underdog could very well be The Amazing Spider-Man. George Lucas has confirmed it – Han Solo did not shoot first. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director said “The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.” There you go. Cult film Wet Hot American Summer has a sequel on the way according to Michael Showalter. The actor told Watch What Happens Live “Absolutely yes. One hundred percent yes. The whole gang. Everyone’s back. We’re doing it.” We’ll wait until we get an official announcement from Universal, but it’s good gossip.

Sports dramas are so moving. There’s the hero’s journey, the young up-and-comer, the alcoholic coach whose wife left him and it’s quite often based on a true story. This one follows major league baseball’s poorest club, the Oakland Athletics. Enter Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Here’s your date night checklist. Rom-com? Tick. French? Tick. Chocolate factory? Tick. Two shy people that will overcome their hyper-emotionalism because of love? Probably tick. Thursday night romcom French movies are made for date nights. So use that yawn and stretch that arm. Guaranteed success.

Jason Statham is the greatest thing to hit action movies since some genius realised that SouthAmerican girls always get kidnapped and held ransom because of some illegal dealings that her dad did with some drug gang. And Clive Owen has a moustache. Throw in some Robert De Niro and watch shit blow up.

When George Clooney makes a movie about George Clooney running for president, people will talk about his ego. What’s the best way to counter that potential smack-talk? Throw in some Ryan Gosling as a young hot-shot trying to make his mark in the political scene, and watch the ladies swoon.

Labretta Suede and the Motel Six kick off their tour after coming back from their stint in America. The blues-trash gang of misfits look the part and sound it too. Who would’ve thought that just an hour’s drive southeast of Auckland, you can find yourself a world away from the city in a shimmering coastal paradise? Splore festival is pretty much just that. Held every two years at Tapapakanga Regional Park, it’s the perfect escape into a world of music, art, and performance. This family-friendly festival has all the elements of escapism. Some lucky bastards can even arrive by boat, and there are ‘glamping’ options (glamourous camping) to spoil yourself even more. This year’s theme, ‘The Island of Hooha’, is all about letting loose. The park “Magically transforms into the quasi-mystical cartoon-ironical, Island of Hooha. Expect rampaging wild beasties, nymphs and troupes of adventurers,” they tell us. As always, you’re encouraged to dress up. Face and body artists from Fab Art will be on hand to help you look your best. Later in the afternoon, you can have yourself decorated in stunning body paint, as well as feathers, jewels and even prosthetics. Fab Art advise you to order prosthetics prior to Splore. That’s some pretty full-on costumery right there. For those who are even more hyped about dressing up, you can arrange to have a costume consultation before you arrive (contact details can be found under the Island of Hooha photo album on the Splore festival Facebook page). The music on offer at Splore reflects the brightest moods of an outdoor summer party, with a definite carnival feel. The line-up boasts mostly – but not at all limited to – reggae, soul, hip hop, dance and world music acts. This year you can witness the impressive presence of Erykah Badu, have a nostalgic ‘90s moment with Soul II Soul, groove to some sweet reggae sounds with Gappy Ranks, and dance like a lunatic to Disasteradio. Then there’s Melbourne’s Barons of Tang with their brand of ‘gypsy deathcore’, the hilarious Cuban Brothers, and local boys @ Peace – there really is something for everyone. But Splore is the kind of festival where you go for the overall experience, and the beautifully relaxed vibe. If you only know two or three of the bands it doesn’t really matter. You arrive ready to have a good time, and once you’re there it’s pretty hard not to fall in love with the place.

This year Splore will be using new use scanable wristbands instead of top-up cards or those annoying drinks coupons, which you can use to buy anything on-site. These RFID (radio frequency identification) security wristbands have been tested for durability and are safe to take swimming. They could prove to be a real timesaver as you can load them up with credit using cash or eftpos, and get refunds at any time during the festival or online for a limited time after the event. One of the things Splore does really well is showcase a wide range of visual arts. In the past there have been brightly decorated trees and installations that blend harmoniously with the natural environment. The art trail looks beautiful by day as well as by night, and this year there’s a new Splorebot for you to make friends with while you’re chilling on the beanbags or hammocks up on the hill. Splore is very much a green festival. With thousands of people coming to live on the site for three days, the organisers ask people to think about ways to reduce their waste. Green incentives include a bonus for carpooling – if you bring four or more people in your vehicle you get free parking for the weekend. Otherwise it’s just $10. The festival is also family friendly, with family camping areas and a rumpus room with some great activities for the kids. These include flag, mask and costume making, guided adventures and night time fluorescent Play-Doh sculpting. Let’s put it this way, with Splore, you never have to wonder if it’ll be as good as last year. This little gem just gets better and more gorgeous every time.

WRITTEN BY DEDEE W

FRI 17- SUN 19 FEB TAPAPAKANGA REGIONAL PARK, ORERE 1-NIGHT.CO.NZ

Painfully stereotypical question, but what prompted the use of a pseudonym? I moved to LA from Detroit to make rap music. Originally I thought Mayer Hawthorne would be a side project. I thought we would sell 1000 copies on vinyl, and then I would go back to being a hip-hop DJ and producer. Nobody, including the label, thought that it would get this big. You just never know what’s going to connect with people! Do you have any interesting anecdotes concerning you and The County that you can share? The County is the best band in the world, and it just so happens that I grew up with a lot of them in Michigan. They roll almost everywhere with me so we’re all like brothers from another mother. I remember we were on tour in Ireland and I got crazy sick with bird flu or some shit and I lost my voice. We sold a lot of tickets for the show and I really didn’t want to cancel! So we came up with a totally different set just for that night, and they all helped me sing my parts. The crowd was great and everyone had a good time. That’s love right there, man. Tell me about Haircut. I’ve been known as Haircut most of my life. A lot of my close friends, even my parents still call me that. The name came from when I was a toddler and my folks took me to get my first haircut. I had the wildest temper tantrum! And the only way they could shut me up was they bought me some vinyl records (45s) to keep me occupied. I’ve been DJing and collecting records ever since. I hear you haven’t received any vocal training. What prompted your choice to get into singing? Singing is still a really new thing for me. I’ve only been singing for about three years now. I only sang on the original demo songs because I thought nobody would ever hear it! I was imitating dudes like Eddie Holman and Harry Ray – I didn’t think those songs would ever get released to the public. I’m still learning a lot about singing every day. I’ve got a long way to go. What bands/artists do you consider influential, and what do you generally use for musical inspiration? I get most of my inspiration from beautiful women. But I like bands that are doing something different. I like a lot of strange music. I recently recorded a cover of a song by this totally obscure band from Pasadena called Shorty’s Portion. The lead singer/piano player was born with a hole in his heart; he was like four feet tall and died in his early 20s after recording this one incredible album. Stuff like that intrigues me. But I also love Prince, Michael Jackson and Steely Dan, so it’s all over the place I guess. What was collaborating with Snoop Dogg like? Snoop and I share a love of sweet soul music. He’s always bumping The Dramatics, The Stylistics, Willie Hutch... all that good shit. He’s always singing along and he’s got such a great, unique voice – so when he asked me how he could get on my album I said “you gotta do THAT!” It was dope because I think I captured Snoop in a way that no one has heard him before. He just has so much fun with everything, and fun is number one! How was the crowd in New Zealand when you performed at Splore last year? Splore was rad. It was totally different and unique from every other festival I’ve done. And at first I was like “wtf is this shit?” but then we got on stage and it all made sense. I got so into it at one point that I broke my watch and it flew off my wrist across the stage! Expecting anything this time around? Kiwis know how to party… They don’t give a fuck! We’ve got a really special new show planned for y’all so I know it’s gonna be even better than last time. WRITTEN BY Jay Lizzle

We recently had a chat with ladykiller extraordinaire Mayer Hawthorne. Here’s how the quick-fire Q&A went.

Jumping the ditch briefly before headlining the five-date Soundwave Tour across Australia, System Of A Down are set to play a one off show at the Trust Stadium Arena in Auckland with their Soundwave friends The Dillinger Escape Plan. New Zealand audiences have always loved System Of A Down and this passionate support and bond has only strengthened if anything during the recent hiatus years, as vocalist Serj Tankian holds NZ residency and regularly lives here. In 2009 Tankian played his solo album Imperfect Harmonies with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in Auckland’s Town Hall, but it’s been six years since the band collectively hit our shores. Fans are expecting to see the band’s classics like Grammy recognised ‘B.Y.O.B.’ and ‘Lonely Day’ but are hoping for some new material as the long hiatus has left fans wanting more. Currently in LA putting the finishing touches to his next solo rock record Tankian says, “New Zealand feels like home to me, and while my work takes me many places I always love returning. I’m super excited to be back home in Auckland again, this time with System.” WED 22 FEB TRUSTS STADIUM ARENA, AUCKLAND

The man himself is heading our way. Roger Waters is set to perform Pink Floyd’s The Wall in its entirety at Vector Arena in Auckland this week – including the anthemic ‘Another Brick In The Wall’, rock classic ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘Mother’, ‘Hey You’ and ‘In the Flesh’. This will be four nights of pure genius. The Wall, written and produced by Waters, was first performed live by Pink Floyd in 1980. Originally released in November 1979, The Wall was America’s top-selling album of 1980 and is still in the US Top 5 bestselling albums of all time. The underlying story of the album is of “… this youngish man who is frightened and in consequence, hides himself away, walls himself in because of his fear of other people and relationships.” When asked why he had decided to revive The Wall he explained, “I did a tour that finished a couple of years ago where I did the whole of Dark Side of the Moon in one half of the show and it went very well. I had been somewhat reluctant to take that whole kind of classical piece and to re-do it, but it really worked well… so having finished that one, when I’d recovered a bit, I thought maybe I had one more in me.” The show is said to have all of the same elements of the original live show except on a larger scale due to technology growth. The original Mother, Wife and Teacher puppets created by Gerald Scarfe have been redesigned, reanimated and reformatted with new technology to fit the new scale of the production. album reviews The Doors LA Woman 40th Anniversary Edition lllll

40 years on and it’d be hard to find many people over 30 who haven’t heard this classic album, and there’s no doubt about the countless artists and musicians the Lizard King has influenced. On this re-release the curators have stayed true to the two speaker ‘stereo’ effect which common in the day. Classics like ‘Don’t You Love Her Madly’ and title track ‘LA Woman’ still sound brilliant this way, and Robby Krieger’s guitar is still one laser-guided missile of a performance. Morrison’s obscure and twisted lyrics are still a haunting listen, seductive yet disturbing, touching you in all the wrong places. Ray Manzarek’s swirling organ can still conjure

Halestorm

There Is

lllll

lllll

Where do I begin? There was a time where I believed Amy Lee (Evanescence) had the best female voice in rock. Front woman Lzzy from Halestorm, however, has proven that she deserves a hit at that title for her efforts on Halestorm’s self-titled album. Lzzy pulls off the scream in ‘Innocence’ just as well as she pulls off singing at her natural register and the beautifully aching ballad ‘I’m Not an Angel’. ‘I Get Off’ is the first single on the album, it starts out with Lzzy’s captivatingly sexy dark vocals, and leads to a chorus that explodes with a catchy riff, vocal melody and lyrics. Track five ‘Familiar Taste of Poison’ is very Evanescence-esque, but Lzzy’s vocal delivery remains distinctly Halestorm, while the strings in this track give it a deep atmospheric feel.

Bathe in a sea of symphonic bliss. McCleery’s latest album under esteemed label Ninja Tunes orchestrates a soulfully exquisite masterpiece where god is certainly found in the details. A divine fusion of jazz and electronica, here resonates production perfection. Melancholy vocals induce a sensation of warmth and tranquillity, delivering an album not for Friday night, but better reserved for Sunday morning. Persistent drums layer electronic synth, distilling a cocktail of progressive rhythm and soul. Standouts such as ‘Tomorrow’ provides an introduction of instrumental violins that quietly builds upon itself. ‘A Wonderful Life’ flashes you an unexpected smile, delighting you with evocative vocal acrobatics. ‘The Gymnopedist’ is hauntingly dramatic, its use of cello and operatic voice showing a sophistication that has unearthed a unique style when it looks like originality is hard to believe anymore.

up serpents and LSD inspired reptilian freaks. Their return to blues/rock roots, fuelled by Morrison’s killer hot baritone on numbers like ‘The Changeling’ and ‘Been Down So Long’ will always frame up as garage-style classics. Even the sprawling set piece ‘Riders on the Storm’ is a ‘60s masterpiece chained and bound with exacting grooves and precision solos. No one is likely to listen to this reissue without referencing the point at which it was made, and the legacy it left behind. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

Chillout Sessions XIV ll

This over-bloated double is the latest in an exhaustingly overwhelming catalogue of compilations from the Ministry of Sound. It’s a patchy cobbling of international and indie numbers with huge lean towards the Aussie pop charts. Compulsory inclusions are Canadian crooner Feist (‘How Come you never Go There’), current tourist Aloe Blacc (‘I Need a Dollar’) and recently departed Gil Scott-Heron with Jamie XX (‘I’ll Take Care Of U’). All good and nice – but so what? A nice discovery, for me at least, was Beach House’s ‘Norway’, a nifty little number with its cool and thrifty beats. There are five remixes included, although Bibio’s take on Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ stands as an abhorrent conversion of a soulful ballad into god-awful musical wallpaper for a third rate wine bar. Architecture in Helsinki, though, drop the gears on Cut Copy’s ‘Need You Now’, converting it to beautiful washes of colour and aural pleasure. Disc two is supposed represent electro-lounge, though only Blood Orange and !!! show anything worthwhile, despite the more familiar DJ mix-flow. Low on the killer, high on the filler. District 9 really has a lot to answer for. It raised the bar for genre movies in a way very few other movies have. The aesthetics and subject matter of Chronicle beg comparisons with Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 masterpiece, and they don’t benefit the new film greatly. That said, this is a nifty,

watchable piece of wishfulfillment entertainment with more than a couple of standout moments. The question you inevitably ask in every found footage movie is, “Why are they still filming?” This film doesn’t offer a particularly satisfying answer but it does provide a unique

“No one’s going to come see it because it’s about gay sex,” opines aspiring artist and film-maker Glen in Weekend. Perhaps he’s director Andrew Haigh’s mouthpiece. Is Weekend about gay sex? To saddle it with that label is misleading. as the film offers much more than the one night stand it first appears to be. Amazing performances from leads Tom Cullen (Russell) and Chris New (Glen) give this budding romance an air of authenticity. The protective disguise of indifference barely conceals the surging interest and raw emotion brewing between this pair of opposites getting to know each other over 48 hours: Russell, who is introspective and not entirely comfortable with his sexuality, and Glen, the say-it-how-it-is

motivations. Plus the film optimistically throws up a lot of questions for a sequel (if there is one) to answer. If I sound like I’m nit-picking, it’s only because I really wanted this to be amazing. As it stands, I’ll have to settle for pretty good.

solution to the problem of these sorts of films always being shot in the first person. It also features some of the coolest ‘humans flying’ action ever put on screen, and builds to an action climax that recalls Superman II. The notion of three teenage boys using the power of telekinesis to have fun is irresistible, and this film gets a lot more mileage out of the idea than the 1982 Scott Baio classic Zapped!, but the ultimate feeling is of a resulting story that doesn’t quite live up to its initial promise. The behaviour of the characters is never surprising, and is generally attributed to simplistic

angry artist. At times their connection is so intimate it’s uncomfortable. But the obscene sex banter is overshadowed by conversations of profound sadness and in that respect Weekend becomes a subtly political film. Haigh never clobbers viewers over the head with the idea; he just points a camera on it. While Russell rides the tube, he’s inadvertently subjected to a crass discussion of what makes someone gay; he’s used to the bigots who shout profanities through his window. Ebbing and flowing between literal highs and lows, Weekend is a film that feels like real life – sometimes dull, sometimes funny, and bittersweet. WRITTEN BY REBECCA BARRY HILL, Flicks.co.nz

Without South Africa the cinematic world would have missed out on District 9, Clint Eastwood’s Rugby World Cup movie Invictus, Charlize Theron and the bad guys from Lethal Weapon II. The country’s now the setting for espionage actioner Safe House, but it adds little to this paint-by-numbers exercise other than providing a location for a familiar blend of double-crossing and shaky-cam violence. Paying a clear debt to both the Bourne films and Tony Scott’s filmography, Safe House never makes a clear choice about which way it wants to go and ends up being an unfulfilling blend of gritty realism and over-the-top kinetic editing. It constantly tries to maintain a pace that never gives its competent cast a chance

to breathe and it never makes the most of a supporting cast that includes Vera Farmiga and Brendan Gleeson. Their interchangeable intelligence roles compete with the film’s villains for the least important characters award, pushed off the screen by Washington and Reynolds who, to their credit, share some good moments together. It’s also to the film’s credit that they’re not pushed into the typical odd couple role that two guys on the run from assassins would normally require, not rookie/experienced or goodie/ baddie but something a little more complex. If only Safe House had more of this instead of thinking its convoluted plot and overfamiliarity was something new and exciting. WRITTEN BY STEVE NEWALL, Flicks.co.nz

with killer elite hitting cinemas this week, we take a look at what ’s good about action films. and jason statham.

Let’s get some things straight about action films. First of all, they’re meant to be exciting and packed full of fast-paced fun. Secondly, nobody cares if the gun that the main hero is firing would “have more recoil/run out of bullets/would overheat” in real life. And lastly, they should be fun. Enter Jason Statham. Jason Statham has to be one of the greatest action stars to come along since Charles Bronson. I’m not saying the two are similar – I’m saying the two have their own ways of starring in these explosive films. Statham is a self-made action star who has everything we want in over-the-top explosisms: he’s big, he’s buff, he’s rough, he’s got the voice, he can fight, and he’s a bit of a looker. But this isn’t what keeps people interested in the long run. Actors have to make smart choices in their Hollywood careers, which is something Statham has done well. We’ll start off with the Guy Ritchie films. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels put Ritchie on the map. Statham wasn’t necessarily the most hardcore of hardcore in this, but he got to show his gutter-gangster chops. The same goes for Snatch – Statham’s character Turkish had all the makings of a bad ass yet we never really saw him throw a punch. He was the crook you love to love. Not too long after his time with Ritchie, Statham made the move to Hollywood. I’m looking at The Transporter and Crank franchises specifically. Let’s face facts – it’s not hip to be into action films. We all like festival darlings and indie coming-of-age flicks. But in a film like Crank 2 we can acknowledge the over the top stupidity of the plot and just enjoy the ride. Would a guy fall out of a plane and live? Sure! Why not? Then would horribly racist portrayals of Chinese gangsters try to steal this guy’s heart and dick? Of course they would! So it makes sense that this guy would attach a car battery to his nipples so that he can juice himself up because now he’s running off electricity. And the indie-filmers need not worry about the film being too mainstream, because there’s a minutes-long reference to the amazing cult superhero mockumentary Big Man Japan in there as well.

Now I’m getting carried away with my love for this film. But the fact remains that action films cop a lot of flack for being too in your face. Not that Killer Elite is a balls out blow up extraordinaire, mind you – it’s more of an action-thriller in the vein of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. It’s got suspense, drama and shooting. It’s got Robert De Niro, Clive Owen and Jason Statham. It’s not going to be the kind of less-than-mediocre bullshit you saw with The A-Team, and it’s not going to be the next Die Hard or Bourne film. As with many film adaptations (Killer Elite is based on the 1991 novel The Feather Men) comparisons will be made. That’s understandable. But the common statement after seeing any adaptation is to say that the original source material was better. In reality, people should replace that word “better” with “different”. It’s a completely different medium of entertainment. We all know that books allow you to create the imagery in your head, but you’re going to a movie to see a new take on this story, aren’t you? So gauge the films merits on the film alone – not on what happened when the film was a book or a comic. But back to the film itself. Critical reception has varied. Some are for the flick, and some have slammed it. Many praise director Gary McKendry’s debut. With a running time of just under two hours you can expect a relatively familiar spy/mercenary style format – the protagonists did something a while ago that comes back to bite them in the arse. A couple of them will have moustaches. There will be a pretty girl who one of them falls for. Killer Elite isn’t the groundbreaking piece of cinema that will revolutionise the action genre, but it’s got a hell of a cast who know how to do this type of film. And if it does end up disappointing you, don’t let that put you off Crank 2.
