Heavy blues quartet Endless Boogie have announced two shows for next week. The New Yorkers might sound all Saturday Night Fever, but they’re a little more of an early-hours-of-Sunday-morning-drunksweaty-make-out fest. Meaning they’re as dirty as you want a blues band to be. Endless Boogie will play at Static in Hamilton on Tuesday 13 March and at Auckland’s Lucha Lounge on Thursday 15 March, with support from X-Ray Fiends. Tickets are on sale now from Under The Radar.

10/04 Special Guests

The Specials have announced their return to New Zealand, following their stint here last year as they celebrated their 30th anniversary. The ska mainstays will play one show in Auckland at (slightly surprisingly) Queens Wharf’s Shed 10 on Tuesday 10 April. Tickets for the show go on sale Wednesday 07 March and are available through Ticket Master.

Film news The newest trailer for The Avengers hit the web last week, and it’s everything we’ve been hoping for. Let’s address the clever teasing marketing campaign as adequately hype-building, leading up to this trailer showing the overwhelming amounts of action and one-liners coming together in harmony for the biggest comic-book movie ever made. There may be some hyperbole in there, but screw it. Bring on Wednesday 25 April. Adam Sandler has broken records with his new flick Jack & Jill. The actor has been nominated for 11 Razzie awards – the highest amount of nominations for the not-so-coveted award ever. The title was previously held by Eddie Murphy with five nods. Here’s the lesson – don’t play more than one role in a “comedy”. No one cares what you would look like if you were a fatter version of someone else in your family. Sir Peter Jackson’s video diary of behind-thescenes production of The Hobbit is floating around online, and many film websites have been noting how beautiful the landscape of New Zealand is. Awww. SoHo has announced a special preview screening of season two of Game Of Thrones for subscribers to the Sky channel. The first episode will be available to stream on iSKY from Tuesday 03 April before the channel premiere on Monday 16 April.

Roky Erickson

John Carter

Powerstation

General Release 8PM, $65, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

If you’re a Flying Nun fan from way back then the name Roky Erickson may be a familiar name. He’s been called many things – an unsung hero of rock’n’roll, the Godfather of psych, an influence to The White Stripes, Sonic Youth, Wooden Shjips, Robert Plant... the man has notoriety in an unfamiliar way. He’s pretty good, too.

Imagine if a young Spartacus was actually in the American civil war but then got kidnapped to fight as a gladiator on Mars instead of in ancient... wherever. It’s Spartacus in space! How awesome does that sound? If your answer doesn’t involve chanting “Spartacus in space!” over and over, you’re a fool.

Home Brew

My Week With Marilyn

San Fran Bath House

Selected Cinemas 9PM, $25, 1-NIGHT.CO.NZ

Tom, Haz, Lui and the Brew crew head back to Wellington with support from H.B.K., Marek , The Hip Drop and Dam-G. The boys will be mixing up something a little different this time by adding in a full eight-piece band to the performance, as they get ready for their upcoming double-album release.

Here you go, every guy who has a thing for art-school girls – the woman of your dreams, Michelle Williams, sexing it up as Marilyn Monroe. Throw in some classy Kenneth Branagh to balance out the lead’s fantastic performance as a prissy, goofy sex icon and bam – you’ve got yourself a hell of a good film.

International acts Kryptic Minds, Spectrasoul, Icicle and Ulterior Motive join locals Blackplanet for a night of bass and debauchery – Croatian style. What does that mean? It means that Croatians know how to party at their Outlook Festival, and some clever dick organisers wanted you to experience that fun.

Ryan Adams makes his way up to Auckland following his solo show in Dunedin. Joined by Drive-By Truckers’ Jason Isbell, there’s a good chance this will be one of those shows you shed a little happiness tear at.

Like many of the shows at this year’s New Zealand International Arts Festival, here’s an international act that you’ll rarely get another chance to see. Who knew that two little Swedish girls could do Americana so well?

Dux Live

Friday 09

After a crazy amount of gigs and touring around the country, Seattle native Shenandoah Davis finishes up her tour in the big city at Auckland’s home of intimate folk gigs, The Wine Cellar. Extremely talented local lads Timothy Blackman and Panther and the Zoo join this night of romantic swooning. It’s all very, very cute.

When the likes of Mountaineater and An Emerald City team up, you’re guaranteed two things: to see some really, really good shows and to wonder why you don’t see these bands every time they play.

The opening night of Pasifika takes place at the Western Springs Lakeside Park. If that’s not going to be family friendly fun for everyone, then you may as well throw out all your teddy bears because you’re an absolute Grinch.

To be honest this gig just had to go in because it’s one of the best puns used as the name of a show ever. Obviously it’s about the art of pole dancing. Not the art of stripping. There is, believe it or not, a difference.

We’re not sure if this gig has a name, but someone mentioned that The Drab Doo-Riffs, The Bloody Souls and Bomb$trappers were playing and then somebody else said “life’s a drab with those Doo-Riffs” and now here it is, in print.

8PM, $25, DOOR SALES ONLY

Dunedin six-piece TLA celebrate their EP at Refuel with support from Hunting Bears and Scattered Brains of the Lovely Union. Side note: the poster for this gig is some Frenchlooking butler/waiter/garçon either holding or making love to a baguette.

Another case of a good gig that just happens to not have a name. The Mysterians, X-Ray Fiends, The Cavemen and Wild play an all-ages gig at Auckland’s best little gallery/ showroom, the Snake Pit on High Street.

Night Rides Rainbow’s End 5PM, $18-35, RAINBOWSEND.CO.NZ

12PM, FREE

The 95bFM Summer Series has moved to a new location, spreading its proverbial wings and landing in Wynyard Quarter at the continually popular Silo Park. This year’s line-up includes The Checks, Die! Die! Die!, Street Chant, The Golden Awesome, Princess Chelsea and Wilberforces.

Every Saturday in March Rainbow’s End is holding night rides, and they’re exactly what they sound like. Some bands are even playing, except you probably don’t have the best chance of hearing them over all of the screams when you’re on a roller coaster. Kinda sounds like the beginning of a horror movie.

There’s plenty on at the New Zealand International Arts Festival’s Writers and Readers week all around Wellington, featuring Tim Flannery, Germaine Greer, Selina Hastings, Jo Nesbo, Kate Grenville, Patrick Evans, Kim Scott, Alan Hollingshurst and many more. See festival.co.nz for more info.

KORA, Zowie, Annah Mac, State Of Mind, PMoney, DJ Sir-vere, PNC, Dan Aux, Beat Mafia, Daniel Farley, Justin Sane, Knights Of The Dub Table and plenty more local and international acts come together with carnivalstyle entertainment for this huge party in the streets. It’s going to be a big one.

Shakespeare in the park and Shakespeare under the stars. One of the writer’s lighter-hearted tales, this is basically the Friends of Shakespeare tales. So before you go see it, make sure you go to a coffee house and give advice to your pals but say some one-liners as well. Could you BE any more into Shakespeare?

SUNDAY 11

7.30PM, $35-60, TICKETEK.CO.NZ

3PM, FREE

The Royal NZ Ballet’s performance of New Young Classic (NYC) tells three short stories from the Big Apple. You might not be into ballet, but that probably means you’ve never seen it. All silliness aside, it’s pretty as hell to watch.

Kicking off in the afternoon, the Underground Festival will host a bunch of Kiwi creative types: rock star portraits, mixed media art, new rock’n’roll hair salon, roller derby and plenty more including hot rod rides and a bouncy castle.

Tuesday 13 The Big Get Together

Otago Museum

The Kings Arms 11AM, FREE

Sundays are made for family fun. It’s even better when it’s free fun. So here’s a goody – the Otago Museum reserve is hosting The Big Get Together, featuring an inflatable obstacle course (sounds amazing), bouncy castles (never a letdown), horsey hoppers (whatever they are) and plenty more for you and the kids.

Rudely Interrupted

Vegan film Fest

The Kings Arms

Elmwood Normal School

Despite being born with a range of disabilities, this history making Australian five-piece were the first rock band in history band to perform at the New York United Nations. A rare opportunity to see them live.

6PM, $15-20, DOOR SALES ONLY

We’re not totally sure what’s at a Vegan Film Festival, but there’s going to be vegan ice-cream. Presumably, if there’s popcorn, it won’t be buttered. Some of the films are about veganism. Some are just films. Should be good.

5PM, $10, DOOR SALES ONLY

The first of two Ariel Pink shows kick off on Tuesday in Auckland. How amazing is that poster? We know that Henrietta Harris always manages to kill with her poster artworks, but this one should get an award. An Alien Role It ’s fair to say that Willem Dafoe is more commonly known for his intensely villainous, devious roles. So why play a hero in the new sci-fi epic John Carter?

To hear Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, Shadow of a Vampire) tell it, there was no way he wasn’t going to work on John Carter with Academy Award-winning writer/director Andrew Stanton. “I was very lucky because the project was quite far along in its casting when I came around,” Dafoe explains. “I was in Los Angeles, where I rarely am because I don’t live there. I knew Andrew was meeting with people for John Carter and since I had worked with him before and was aware of the project, I said that I’d like to have a meeting with him. We met and he told me what he was doing and showed me some of the art. When I read the script, I got excited. I said, ‘Listen, you want me to play a Thark, I’ll play a Thark. I would love that. I would love the physical challenges.’ “My character, Tars Tarkas, is the head of a warrior tribe called the Tharks,” he explains. “They are very tall, green-skinned Martians with four arms and tusks. There’s a feeling that their culture is in decline; they were once a great society and now they’ve been reduced to being a nomadic, warlike society, moving from place to place to survive. There’s a feeling of sadness and lost empire to them and it very much informs who Tars Tarkas is. The Thark culture is brutal, primitive and warrior-like, but it hasn’t always been. Tars remembers a more refined, civilised past. He secretly yearns for those days and for a more humane society. He knows there’s got to be a better way than how they’re surviving now.” The challenge for Dafoe and the other actors playing Tharks was to convey the depth and feeling of their performances while adapting to the technological and physical realities of this particular project. Dafoe and his fellows Tharks spent their time on set dressed in gray jumpsuits covered in black dots and on stilts. They also wore helmets with cameras mounted on them; the cameras were pointed at their faces at all times to capture their expressions. “This film had lots of challenges, not only

10

|

grooveguide.co.nz

because of the stilts, but some of the gestural language and the fact that we had to learn a Martian language for part of it,” Dafoe says. “I trust Andrew a lot. I know him from working on Finding Nemo and I know that he’s quite rigorous and detailed. He was very insistent that he wanted scenes played out for the human characters, and also to always have the scenes fully realised. So, I’m in all of the scenes with Taylor Kitsch, who plays John Carter,” he says. “It’s not just motion capture on green screens. And it makes a big difference. It’s a big difference for the actors because everything is informed by the set; it’s not disjointed. It gives a kind of integrity for the animators to work with as everything holds together as a piece. I think that’s very important. I’m not sure that’s ever been done to this degree.” Dafoe is also a huge fan of the story that Burroughs created back in 1912 and believes that it has stood the test of time extremely well. “This is a very well imagined world that Edgar Rice Burroughs has created,” he says. “It’s got all the attraction of that imagination plus pure fantasy. The story he tells really is very evocative, the characters are so well drawn and it puts forth some questions about society and how we conduct ourselves. It asks what our ambitions are and what we’re willing to sacrifice. It’s rich material. “I can imagine that the film will work for a very broad audience. It works on lots of different levels because it’s complex, it’s dense and it’s very detailed. One of the biggest pleasures in doing this project is to work with someone like Andrew Stanton who works on this scale, on a story that has popular appeal but doesn’t pander. John Carter was created from a very personal place.” John Carter IN CINEMAS: THU 08 MAR

Ripe for the Picking What happens after one of the biggest names of ‘90s music takes a hiatus from their hiatus? With their children all grown up, The Cranberries know it ’s time for a tour, and clearly, so does the world. There was a stage a few years back when Dolores O’Riordan’s voice was all over the airwaves. During the mid ‘90s The Cranberries put out huge hits like ‘Linger’, ‘Dreams’ and ‘Zombie’ and racked up over 30 million units, four Top 20 Billboard albums and a total of eight hit singles. Add to that several appearances for the Pope, Rolling Stone covers and, performances on Letterman and Leno. Like other acts of their ilk the band faded out for a while to concentrate on raising families and enjoy the fruits of all that work; but the creative bug is hard to get out of your system, and after a few years the band escaped nappies and daycare runs to return to the studio. The result was Roses, their sixth studio album and the first since Wake Up And Smell The Coffee in 2001. “I always had the attitude that there would be another album,” notes guitarist Noel Hogan. “We just agreed we needed to get away from it for a while. But now it’s great to be back.” Originally founded in 1989 as The Cranberry Saw Us, Noel, Mike and Fergal first met Dolores O’Riordan in May 1990 when she auditioned to replace the original vocalist. After signing to Island Records the single ‘Linger’ was adopted by MTV USA, who thrashed it on the hour until it became a worldwide hit. A fairytale start to an unforgettable decade. After that there was ‘94’s No Need To Argue which spawned the melancholic ‘Zombie’ and ‘Ode To My Family’ and was followed closely by the third album Faithful Departed, made with Aerosmith producer Bruce Fairburn. By September 2003 the band was shot. There was a desperate need to return to their families. With four members recently married, the pressures to return home and raise their young families was growing greater. Delores speaks fondly of her time as a full time mother, her kids being seven, 11 and 14 now. At a recent children’s party (which all four members attended), they realised there are now more than a dozen little Cranberries.

During the hiatus Dolores released two solo albums, and Noel wrote and produced Mono Band in ‘05 and later, Arkitekt. Fergal played in several acts in the local Limerick scene while Mike ran a local eating house in Limerick city. Fast forward to 2009 where Mike joined his brother Noel to perform some Cranberries songs at a college event in Dublin to honour Dolores. “The minute we started playing it felt like we’d never stopped,” comments Dolores. “There’s something about playing with the Cranberries, it’s like putting on the pair of perfect shoes. It just fits.” The small acoustic event helped ease the partnership back together again and within the year the Cranberries were testing the waters with some low-key shows. The following year saw them back up to speed again with a world tour. Some of the material on the new album was on the agenda before their break, such as ‘Astral Projection’ and ‘Raining In My Heart’. Then there’s some from the sound checks (‘Serendipity’, ’Conduct Yourself’) and the first single ‘Tomorrow’ which has a distinctive “carpe diem” feel to it. There’s no rise and no fall to the story of The Cranberries. While some may argue that the band reached their peak in the mix of grunge-fuelled folk back in the ‘90s, there’s a reason that there is a world tour going on. There’s a reason that they’re playing at Auckland’s Trusts Stadium. Once one of the most formidable names of the MTV generation, there’s nothing to say that the sound of The Cranberries has turned rotten. For all we know, the sound may very well be riper than ever. Get Ready For A Rude Awakening Every so often, you come across a band that truly blows you out of the water. Be it their catchy hooks, earnest lyrics or general rock-star swagger, some bands have just done ir right. Having toured around the world, released a Cannes awardwinning music video and garnered hugely positive feedback for their debut album Tragedy of the Commons, Rudely Interrupted are soaring past milestone after milestone. As one of Australia’s most celebrated acts, Rudely Interrupted made history as the first rock band to perform at New York’s United Nations. Four out of five of the members share a range of physical and intellectual disabilities (autism, blindness, deafness, Asperger’s and Down’s syndrome), but more importantly – a passionate love for music. Despite being born with slightly wonky genetics, lead singer Rory Burnside’s pitchperfect vocal melodies and captivating lyrics give nothing away on a listen. Using his weaknesses as new found strengths, ‘Close My Eyes (Open My Heart)’ is a powerfully engaging single – made that much more poetic by the fact that he was born without

eyes of his own. Put together by music therapist Rohan Brooks, the members of the band have found an inspiring creative outlet for selfexpression in their infectious indie-pop anthems. Sounding somewhere between The Strokes and Arcade Fire, Tragedy of the Commons shows the masterful craft of the band on the whole, eliminating the pity card and eliminating assumptions of being a disabled band. Their musical merits stand staunchly on their own, and the snowballing support and following speaks for itself. “Two months prior to us performing at the UN, Bono was addressing the same auditorium and he only half-filled the room, whereas we packed it out, so we think we can champion him a little in the UN department. Ha!” says Rohan. The Mutes are a newly formed local act, and also have various intellectual challenges. Clearly, nothing’s stopping these two bands from putting on a great rock show. If you’re ready for an act like none other, this is one for the ages. See the person, not the disability – and have one hell of a great night out while you’re at it! Dirty Minds If you were lucky enough to catch outrageous instrumental trio Dirty Three at 2010’s Laneway festival, then listen up – they’re back with a vengeance and looking to slay all comers at Auckland’s Powerstation on Wednesday 14 March. Founded over 20 years ago by Melbournites Warren Ellis (vocals/violin), Mick Turner (guitars) and drummer Jim White, Dirty Three carry on their dramatic soundscapes like an overpowered hot rod at a drunken pep rally. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is pre-dinner music for the cocktail set; they make songs that ebb, flow and crescendo into an absolute cacophony of squally feedback and white noise. And that’s just on wax – live, they’re even more arresting. Like a skinny, bearded Elvis on speed, Ellis rips up the stage with dervish leaps and hot-fire antics – Rolling Stone have described his violin playing look as “a lascivious, illicit act”.

Ellis earned his stripes playing with Nick Cave’s The Bad Seeds, while and Turner and White have collaborated with Cat Power, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and PJ Harvey. Well-known at the UK alternative festival All Tomorrow’s Parties and its sister festival in New York, Dirty Three have been lately reprising their classic 1998 album Ocean Songs to high acclaim. Ever evolving, their last in-door effort Cinder saw the band break out with two songs featuring vocalists Cat Power and Sally Timms (The Mekons). Dirty Three are heading down to the Super City with a huge repertoire, guaranteed to please. “We gladly play the hits and the ones that got away,” notes Ellis. “On a good day there’s nothing quite like us on the stage – and you can quote me on that!”

GAMING Wipeout 2048 PS VITA GAME REVIEW

What happens when you put together gravity-defying hover cars, futuristic racetracks and a vast array of weaponry to blow your rivals to smithereens? You get one hell of a ridiculously fun game. Wipeout’s been working with a perfect formula for years, and they’ve learned better than to fuck with that. Pulling a reverse Marty McFly, this iteration of the series heads forwards to their past in the year 2048. Bridging the gap between the ultra-modernised metropolises of games past and our current architectural point

in time, the racetracks push the boundaries of tech but still bear some level of alluring familiarity. And c’mon, who doesn’t want to rip through the streets of neo-Tokyo at mind-blowingly breakneck speeds? Much like the previous games in the Wipeout canon, it’s all about blasting through at whirlwind speeds, pulling off crazy air-brake turns and gunning the shit out of your competition. Speed boost pads are distributed liberally around each course, and power-ups now come in green

and yellow (splitting them into defensive and offensive items, respectively). This comes in handy, as a shield or autopilot ends up being a lot more valuable than a salvo of rockets when you’re in the lead. The strongest point does have to be how sharp and striking the visual aspect of the game is. Both the ships and the environment are impressively futuristic and crisp – it’s kinda like that Speed Racer movie kicked up to the next level. The variety of options, ranging from gameplay to vehicles is also rather impressive. There’s a comprehensive singleplayer option with XP gained for races, unlocking other vehicles as you progress through the campaign. In regards to multiplayer, the cross-platform capabilities enable you to go head-to-head against Wipeout HD players on the PS3. As strong as this game is, it

still isn’t without its weaknesses. A couple of tracks have their own design flaws, like the fork in Subway that has a tendency to hit players with a dead wall (rather than split the routes into a shorter but more difficult detour and regularly straight alternative). The flashy visual offering has some blemishes, as Wipeout players regularly accustomed to the 60fps frame rate may find the 30fps rate in this game to be significantly less smooth. All in all, if you’re a fan of the genre, this is not a title to miss. Flaws aside, there’s something really cool about turning your reflexive console-turning habits into a genuine steering function. While the loading times may be a bit of a bother, the stunning visuals, engaging soundtrack and challenging gameplay are more than worth the wait. Wipeout 2048 is out now and available at all major gaming stockists.

album reviews Pink Floyd The Wall (Immersion Edition) llll

Fans of Pink Floyd are (no apologies for the pun) divided by The Wall, but this edition reveals a version both unpolished and perfected. The Wall is an immersing experience in itself, yet the live recording leaves one constantly being pulled back by the ejaculatory applause of the audience. Don’t get me wrong; the sound production is immaculate, but it’s difficult to imagine you’re there with all the pyrotechnics and massive puppetry when you’re reminded so often that you’re not. A fascinating inclusion, and certainly something I dwelt on,

I read somewhere that the bulk of the tracks on this nifty lil’ EP were discards from Lee’s 2010 Mission Bell sessions. Yet they stand up pretty well as individual tracks all by their lonesome. Lee may have the dirtiest, most bad-ass reputation in the Blue Note stable but you wouldn’t know it from these tender, soulful cuts. ‘Simple Things’ and ‘There I Go Again’ are apparent derivatives from Hall & Oates, although they feel more like early Fleetwood Mac. Then there’s the upbeat hokey tempo of ‘Say Goodbye’, almost travelling into Ben Harper territory. The delicious slide guitar on ‘May I Remind You’ is the perfect frame to Lee’s masterful balladry, as is the understated gospel choir on ‘Mama Sail to Me’, which is less “Sunday preaching” than it is a deep spine-tingle of satisfaction. This is heartwarming music, for sure.

Confident about his ability to take over the world, homeslice DertySesh stands staunch on his new rap release. Auckland hip-hop label Move The Crowd are going from strength to strength, and have recently adopted this young Kiwi talent. Upon listening to Apology Accepted (an interesting album name after the media controversy over his previous album Sic Love), I was a little confused. Why does he sound American? Is the bad-boy image (from killing to selling P) real? But questions aside, let’s absorb his musical message. Derty is the name and dirty is his game, the bass being heavy and burgeoning with angst. Lyrics seem to follow in this form; angry and despondent, yet delving occasionally into personal reflections and heartfelt musings. DertySesh is creating quite a buzz amongst NZ hip-hop communities; it’ll be interesting to see where and how he will evolve.

Every year the prestigious WOMAD world music festival releases a compilation CD to whet the appetites of punters, fans, and the festival-curious alike. Local acts, such as The Black Seeds and Neil Finn’s Pyjama Club, rub shoulders with international attractions. Just like every other edition, the fine people behind WOMAD 2012 have put together a formidable selection covering many different cultures, styles, and genres. Music from France to Australia to The Ivory Coast and everything in between is represented. Reggae, rock, folk; this album covers a lot of ground as more traditional styles mesh with their contemporary counterparts. Given the diverse nature of this compilation some tracks fit together brilliantly, like a strange international tapestry. You may not be familiar with many of the acts but you’ll find yourself going along for this ride. A masterful reflection of the festival’s multiculturalism, with a serious amount of fun inside.

Sweet Sour is an album that hides a couple of surprises. The first being that it’s nothing like you’d expect, especially since the cover gives the impression of a heavy metal album (and the band name doesn’t help either). The title track opens with drums and a riff you would expect to explode, which it doesn’t do until it reaches the closing chorus. This album is only heavy when it needs to be and this is one of its strengths, as it’s much more beautiful than predictable. The duets are perfect throughout the album, shown exquisitely on tracks such as ‘Bruises.’ Another surprise is the way ‘You’re Not Pretty But You Got It Goin’ On’ explodes out of track seven; the most colossal song on the album, it exposes the band’s darker and heavier side. Overall, Sweet Sour encapsulates you with musical beauty that would stop a charging bull.

were the demo tracks. Here you can see the band nurturing these tracks from infancy through to the hulking behemoths they became. It’s a raw and humbling experience, proving (as if it had to be proven) that The Wall remains thoroughly unconquerable in terms of its depth, breadth and height.

Despite it being more than a decade since 9/11, this is the first Hollywood film (bar Adam Sandler’s little-seen Reign Over Me and The Dixie Chicks’ Shut Up and Sing documentary) to deal with the emotional fallout from that fateful day. And with a skilled line-up that includes Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader) barking the

orders, veteran screenwriter Eric Roth and a star-studded cast that includes Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and an excellent Max Von Sydow this should have been a compelling and emotional drama that was awards ceremony bait. Yet apart from some late love from a more famous Oscar, it’s been largely ignored. It’s

film

This action thriller is a remake of a 2008 Icelandic movie (Reykjavik-Rotterdam) and bizarrely, is directed by the star of the original film. Baltasar Kormákur, the director in question, does a respectable job of maintaining the tension throughout Contraband, which proves to be moderately entertaining. Wahlberg’s character Chris could easily be Mickey Ward from The Fighter five years down the track and shows just how much the actor is suited to playing blue-collar characters. Like many a cinematic protagonist, Chris is a good man forced into a difficult situation but Wahlberg convinced me that his problems were tangible. Despite the various pulpy

not an unmitigated disaster by any means but a glacial pace and characters that are hard to, as the Americans say “root for”, leave you feeling underwhelmed rather than emotionally overcome. Having said that, Roth and Daldry do a good job with the fractured narrative, slowly revealing the personal horror of what Oskar heard and saw that day, while Alexandre Desplat’s (The King’s Speech) score adds emotional heft that’s at least a bit more subtle than the ending which lays the schmaltz on with a trowel. Like its young protagonist, Incredibly Close is a

elements, the film strives for a sense of realism and this is backed up by the fine collection of left-of-centre young Hollywood actors in supporting roles – Ben Foster; Lukas Haas and Gionvanni Ribisi (Avatar). Kate Beckinsale, however, is terribly miscast as Wahlberg’s wife. We’re at a point in modern cinema where centering a film around smuggling feels almost quaint but this one manages to cram in a furious armoured car heist; a Speed 2: Cruise Controlesque ship collision and even more shipping container-based action than the climax of The A-Team movie. I did keep waiting for them to go to Smuggler’s Cove, though. No such luck. WRITTEN BY DOMINIC CORRY, FLICKS.CO.NZ

The first Underworld film merged edgy fantasy action with the dramatic dullness of a Spanish soap opera, while the second was overstuffed with those same drab story elements. The third installment, Rise of the Lycans, provided a somewhat shallow back story. With Awakening, they hand the filmmaker’s whip over to Swedish directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, who seem to care less about expanding the Underworld universe and more about seeing vampires and werewolves mess each other up. Kate Beckinsale also returns in her skin-tight leather outfit that relinquishes practicality for sex appeal. Within the first minute, we’re given a Saw-esque overview of the previous films. After that,

story elements are kept to a minimum, eclipsed by the action sequences which vary from junk-food brutality to hilarious absurdity. The visual effects aren’t going to win any awards but they admirably cater towards the violence, making decent use of the 3D. While the score is bland, the relentless sound design is phenomenal, making you duck at every fired bullet and shiver at every Lycan’s growl. Running under 90 minutes long, Underworld: Awakening has the mentality of a straight-tovideo sequel, the body of an ADD child and the pulsing veins of a meth addict. It’s the cinematic equivalent to a mudslide: quick ‘n’ dirty forgettable fun. WRITTEN BY LIAM MAGUREN, FLICKS.CO.NZ
