It’s not the easiest way to spell a name, but at least it’s not just a symbol. $noregazZzm has announced a mini-tour with Fauxhound, kicking off this week at Auckland’s Whammy Bar on Thursday 15 March. The team-up will head down to Christchurch to play at the Darkroom@Archive on Friday 17 March with Waots, then carry on to Dunedin for two shows – one at XII Below as part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival and another next week at Chicks Hotel.
Love & Taite
This year’s finalists for the Taite Music Prize were announced last week, and unsurprisingly we’re looking at some top shelf talent up for the cash prize of $10,000. The finalists are folkman Andrew Keoghan for Arctic Tales Divide, metallers Beastwars for their self titled album, hip-hop golden boy David Dallas for The Rose Tint, the fresh new faces of She’s So Rad for In Circles, golden oldies The Bats for Free All Monsters, the sensational songstress Tiny Ruins for Some Were Meant For The Sea and of course noisepop newcomers Unknown Mortal Orchestra for their self-titled album. The winner will be announced on Friday 20 April.

16/03 Gay Old Times
Despite not technically living in the same country, let alone the same hemisphere, kind-of-Auckland-based duo Gaytime have announced a tour as they celebrate the release of their debut album In Our Prime. The garage band is everything we love about dirty, classic, loud, distorted rock. Gaytime kick off this week at Auckland’s Lucha Lounge on Friday, and will be playing a spot at the Heart Attack Alley fundraiser on Saturday. Next week will see them head to Wellington and Wanganui before making their way to Australia for two shows. The news gets better with the fact that just as heavy, just as dirty, just as impressive Auckland garage four-piece The Raw Nerves will be playing support at all of their shows, and blues favourites Drab Doo Riffs will also be making a few pit stops along the road as well.

PLAYING In Brief... FAVourites Cyan Corwine DIALOGUE WITH A MANNEQUIN
Favourite drink? Could there possibly be a more refreshingly fantastic drink than soda water with a substantial squeeze of lemon? I think not. Favourite restaurant/café? As a coffee addict I must pay homage to the café where we purchase our coffee beans… Good One on Douglas St. Tucked away café, delightful vibe, and Coffee Supreme beans roasted to perfection. Favourite takeaway? My pallet is not well versed in the takeaway scene, as my husband is good at keeping our kitchen in use. However when away food is being taken, Ruk Thai and Otto Woo are at the top of the list. Favourite colour? I like them all. Favourite childhood memory? Apologies in advance to my baby brother (Emory)! When he was around three years of age he toddled teary eyed and dripping from the tub to the kitchen with my cousin (who was one year younger than he) trailing curiously behind… He howled with desperation and disappointment quivering on every word… “Why does Ryan (our cousin) have a “ding-dong” and all I got’s a plain old penis!?” Favourite meal? My Mama’s Lebanese grape leaves and my Pop’s pasta man-dishes. Favourite cause? The Earth Charter Initiative and Victory of Violence. Favourite word? Pumpernickel (incidentally, not the hugest fan of its taste). Favourite album? Because they are my buddies and this is a rocking good album I must say The Third Wheel Band’s album On Willow Street. Favourite body part on you? My slightly crooked teeth, which aid my crooked smile. Favourite body part on someone else? My husband’s nose. Is that weird? I love it! Favourite venue? The Basement, of course. SEE HER LIVE: DIALOGUE WITH A MANNEQUIN WED 21- SAT 31 MAR THE BASEMENT ITICKET.CO.NZ

New Zealand DJs P-Money and Dan Aux will be releasing their first collaborative single ‘Kinda Lovin’’ through French label Kitsune. The worldwide release will have six tracks, including the original track along with remixes. Tiki Taane’s cover of the infamous ‘Over The Rainbow’ is available for download through iTunes. As part of Mercury Energy’s Good Energy campaign, all sales of the song will be going towards the Starship Foundation charity. Adam McGrath from blues-oes The Eastern has been announced as the support act for both Steve Earl shows – at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Wednesday 11 April, and Wellington’s Bodega on Thursday 12 April. The Heart Attack Alley fundraiser (to help send the band to Europe to tour and record) is being held at Auckland’s Whammy Bar this Saturday, and it’s looking better and better with the inclusion of Gaytime and The Raw Nerves to the roster, joining Evil Twins as the support acts. After reaching a double platinum debut single and a gold album locally, Avalanche City has announced that the EP Love Love Love will be launched in the US. The band
has signed with Roadrunner for the North American release. Here’s a fun weekend fact: Apple announced that more than 25 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store. The 25 billionth app (Where’s My Water? Free) was downloaded by Chunli Fu of Qingdao, China. As the winner of the App Store Countdown to 25 Billion Apps, Chunli Fu has been given a USD$10,000 iTunes gift card. So not only did Chunli Fu download a free app, but also $10,000 iTunes moneys? Some people get all the internet luck.
Best of Britomart It’s been in the works for years and recently we’ve seen all the cogs coming together in harmony. Auckland’s party quadrant Britomart is always a hotspot for drinking and whatnot, and this weekend we’ll be seeing the closest thing to a festival we can in the downtown centre (barring the first Laneway back in 2010, of course). This Saturday 17 March, the Britomart Country Club (31 Galway Street) will be hosting the Jameson Global Party – a shindig which is promising ten hours of live music from some of Auckland’s best DJs (MayaVanya, Arash, Sam Hill, Daniel Farley, Huffey Street Sound System, Connor Nestor and Thane Kirby) and features headliners Zowie and Clap Clap Riot. We’re sure you’ll be looking for pubs in which to crawl on St Patrick’s Day, and this one could be a place to set up shop. What’s also got us excited down at Britomart is Mexico (23 Britomart Place). It’s not a stretch to say that the authentic Mexican restaurant is one of the best new venues to grab a meal in the central city. In terms of legit Mexican food, you only ever tend to hear about “that one in Kingsland” or “that one in Ellerslie that’s never really open”. So when a venue opens up that has more inspiration from Frida Kahlo, Mexican wrestlers and the Day of the Dead than any given Robert Rodriguez film, you know you’re in for an authentic time. The crazy selection of spiced beers, specialist cocateles and top shelf tequila only seals the deal.

JAMESON GLOBAL PARTY FEATURING ZOWIE AND CLAP CLAP RIOT SAT 17 MAR THE BRITOMART COUNTRY CLUB, AUCKLAND 2 X DOUBLE PASSES
Film news Chronicle helmer Josh Trank has said that he is in negotiations to direct a Venom film for the big screen. This would mean a solo spin-off for the infamous Spider-Man villain, and one that we’d be pretty damn excited to see. Let’s face it, Topher Grace (who played the symbiote’s host Eddie Brock in the abysmal Spider-Man 3) will always be Eric from That ‘70s Show and doesn’t hold his own all that well as a movie monster. A bunch of sequel news has come out over the last couple of weeks, so we’ll round it up quickly: there’s already a Project X 2 in the works; the brains behind Cloverfield are keen to get started on a second film; a third Journey film is being crafted and is fast-tracked for a 2014 release; Matthew Vaughn has been signed to do another X-Men: First Class flick; Transformers 4 has started auditions; Bill and Ted 3 has a script but has not yet been given the green light; despite not being released yet, a sequel is in the works for 21 Jump Street; Angelina Jolie rejected the script for Salt 2; Ice Cube is working on the fourth Friday installment; Iron Man 3 has started set work. Here’s one for true film geeks: Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer Wally Pfister (who won an Oscar for Inception and ASC Awards for Inception, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins) has signed up to direct his first feature. It’s untitled and there’s next to no info about the film. But we’re guessing it will look pretty.

9PM, $30, DASHTICKETS.CO.NZ
When you think of a comedy lab, you might think of people in great big white coats with science sticks pointing at equations on a whiteboard while using beakers with coloured liquid to make the best comedy in all the land. This isn’t that. It’s more of a testing ground for jokes, or a preview screening.
If there’s one thing that’s always sexy, it’s burlesque. And if there’s one thing that’s always cool, it’s dressing up like zombies. And if there’s one thing on in Dunedin this Thursday that combines those two things, it’s Sammy’s Zomburlesque party. How is there any chance this won’t get you excited?

The dirty boys make their triumphant return to New Zealand. Last time they were here for Laneway back in 2010, Warren Ellis, and crew blew the metaphorical lid off the metaphorical can of metaphorical awesomesauce. If that’s too confusing, just wait until you see them live. It will all make sense.
7.30PM, SOLD OUT
The Cranberries had some anthems during the ‘90s. ‘Zombie’ being one of the biggest. Just think about that song. It’s hard to get out of your head. It’s like a power ballad of ‘The Song That Doesn’t End’.
It’s good to see that fans are fully behind the Breakers. And Justin Lin is doing wonders for the sport just by being good at it. So catch Linsanity by proxy and see the SKYCITY Breakers VS the Gold Coast Blaze.

My Goodness, My Guinness
Ponsonby Market Day
House parties or pubs
Ponsonby Road
Well, duh. When it comes to the international Irish way of thinking and drinking, a couple of things pop into your mind. Green clothes, orange wigs, whiskey and Guinness. Just try name another Irish beer. The brand was introduced in 1759, and has matured with age. Usually wine does that, but Guinness is classier than wine because it’s not made from rotten grapes (which is gross, let’s face it). This year, collectively with millions of people from around the globe, Kiwis are being encouraged by Ireland’s iconic beer to attempt setting a world record certified by Guinness World Records (yeah, this beer is EVERYWHERE) marking St Patrick’s Day as officially the ‘The Friendliest Day of the Year’. Head to the Guinness NZ’s Facebook page and say that you’ll be friendly on the day, then maybe you’ll be a part of world history.
Not everything on Saturday has to be about pubs and fake beards. There are kids to think about and families to entertain. If that sounds like your kind of ball and chain, head to Ponsonby to see the Ponsonby Market Day in action. The streets light up with music and entertainment, the shops open their doors wider than Julia Roberts’ smile, and there’s a crazy amount of cafes and restaurants to show down at.
Riccarton House and Bush
Becks Southern Alehouse
16 Kahu Rd, Riccarton
155 Colombo Steet, Somerfield
The Riccarton House and Bush is aiming to make a weekend of fun and friendliness in this all ages shindig. Irish dancing, folk music, the Guinness Public House, Irish stew, porridge, live music, buskers and plenty more will be on show at this family-friendly fiesta.
The Garden City’s classic Alehouse is having a wee celebration called the Sign of the Firebird. Not everything about St Paddy’s music needs to be all Cranberries and Pogues – the Becks Southern Alehouse will be holding a classic rock day if you feel like a break from the Irish reels and jigs.
Hurstmere Hooley
Biddy Mulligans
Molly Malones
Hurstmere Road, Takapuna
742 Victoria Street
Cnr Taranaki Street & Courtenay Place
As well as iconic Hurstmere Road pub Florrie McGreals holding an Irish Mardi Gras on Thursday, a warm-up on Friday and of course the main event on Saturday, three bars will be working together to make a fully licensed green zone for St Paddy’s. Florrie McGreals, The Elephant Wrestler and the Belgian Beer Cafe will be serving up everything green and orange to get you in the St Paddy’s spirit. It’s basically an Irish block party.
When it comes to Irish bars in Hamilton, Biddy Mulligans would have to take the whiskey-flavoured cake. Resting on Victoria Street and a stone’s throw away from the Waikato River, the pub will be one of the go-to venues in Hamilton this Saturday.
A classic Irish bar if ever there was one, Wellington’s Molly Malones has been around for over 100 years. In that time they’ve picked up a thing or two about a thing or two, and if anyone knows how to pull off some St Paddy’s shenanigans, it’s these guys.
The Claddagh
St Patricks Day Festival
Shananigans Irish Fest
372-376 Broadway, Newmarket
Multiple Venues
Golflands, 248 State Highway 2, Hastings
The Claddagh will be celebrating St Patrick’s Day by featuring entertainment from Celtic to local bands throughout the day and well into the evening’s celebrations. The specialist selection of Irish beer and whiskey will go down a treat with the live bands for in the celebratory St Paddy’s tent, where an appropriate amount of red-headed mischief will no doubt go down.
St Patrick’s Day Mass, Hugh Green Group St Patrick’s Parade on Queen Street, an Irish Music and Dance Display at the Viaduct Harbour and the Skytower going green. There’s plenty lined up for the St Patrick’s Festival. Check out stpatrick.co.nz.
This one stuck out like a diamond in the rough. What do you get when you take the classic St Paddy’s approach of music and Irish themed food and drink but throw in games for the kids to enjoy, mini-golf and tennis? You get up to Shananigans that the whole family can enjoy.

Practice What You Teach The Teacha himself, KRS-One, will be bringing more than just a few familiar sounding tracks to New Zealand this April.
What comes to mind when you think of music in the ‘90s? Were you buying your first Ace of Base cassette? Were you relishing in the brand new Pearl Jam record? Were you bopping along to the most marketable of marketable boy bands? Everyone knows nostalgia in one way or another, and nostalgia knows no bounds. But with any luck, the true conscience of ‘90s hip-hop surpasses such an escapist way of thinking. Yeah, that’s pretentious as hell. But when you’re trying to explain why New Zealand is so damn fortunate to have the O’est of OGs coming our way, you’ve got to give a little leeway for different ways of thinking. And that is exactly what KRS-One is all about. Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone. That’s the message of Lawrence Krisna Parker. A visionary in his own right. A Teacha if ever there was one. The early ‘90s music market was flooded with the suits we love to hate sending replica after replica of what would end up defining the lack of love and spirit in music. Enter hip-hop. The message we couldn’t truly understand this far away from America, but it got us listening nonetheless. No more racism. Get rid of poverty. Be fair. They’re simple words of wisdom, and words that KRS-One pushed heavily. Many of his ideas stemmed from experience. It was the Stop the Violence movement in 1989 when the rapper wanted to push the vision of, in his own words, restoring the original principles back into hip-hop. When a fan was shot and killed following a show joint show between Boogie Down Productions (KRS-One’s original group) and Public Enemy, Parker decided that it was time to do something about the pointless violence in the hip-hop community. This rode on the wake of a shooting which resulted in the death of Scott La Rock, who had worked with KRSOne during the early days of Boogie Down Productions. As well as the movement using their influence to vocalise their vision of peace as they worked with civil rights organisation the National Urban League, a single was released which featured some of the biggest names in the East Coast hip-hop scene. ‘Self-Destruction’ featured KRS-One, D-Nice, Ms. Melodie, Delite, Daddy-O, Wise, Frukwan, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Just-Ice, Heavy D and Public Enemy, and the song preached for the end of pointless violence between minorities. That message is nothing new, but it’s still a message that needs delivering. KRS-One took it upon himself to use his influence to try and

create a better world in any way he could. When he saw a tipping point in his world he decided to, at the very least, attempt to do something about it instead of waiting until it was too late. But being one of the original voices of conscious hip-hop (or what hip-hop used to be when it didn’t need the precursor) doesn’t mean you’re going to have buddies left, right and centre. Being the vocal man he is, Parker found himself embedded in controversy in 2004 when he made comments about the 9/11 attacks on the US. He was (unfairly) quoted as saying “we cheered when it happened” when he was present during a discussion held by The New Yorker (a quote that was used slanderously). But the rapper wouldn’t let himself be held down, and went on the record with allhiphop.com to issue a statement: “I was asked about why hip-hop has not engaged the current situation more… my response was ‘because it does not affect us, or at least we don’t perceive that it affects us, 9/11 happened to them’. I went on to say that ‘I am speaking for the culture now; I am not speaking my personal opinion’. I continued to say; ‘9/11 affected them down the block; the rich, the powerful those that are oppressing us as a culture... We cheered when 9/11 happened in New York and say that proudly here. Because when we were down at the trade center we were getting hit over the head by cops, told that we can’t come in this building, hustled down to the train station because of the way we dressed and talked, and so on, we were racially profiled. So, when the planes hit the building we were like, ‘mmmm, justice.’ And just as I began to say ‘now of course a lot of our friends and family were lost there as well’ I was interrupted...” So what’s the point of all of this? It’s relevant. KRS-One is known as The Teacha for a reason. In his 25ish years as a figurehead in the hip-hop scene, starting schools and initiatives, and generally trying to do his part to make what little part of the world he can a better place, the rapper is one of the quiet voices of a loud demographic. He works behind the scenes, and it’s a rare opportunity to see him in front and up close. A Piece Of Real Estate
when it comes to iconic new zealand festivals, it’s hard to discount the one celebrated around the globe.
Real Estate’s Matthew Mondanile reflects on the band’s tour and their new album release Days.
Immerse yourself in the music and culture of places you’ve never been before. World of Music and Dance (WOMAD) is renowned as the international festival created by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Brooman in 1982. Since then, 21 countries have hosted the festival and entertained millions of festival-goers. This year WOMAD returns to New Plymouth for its eighth year, with a spectacular line-up that you won’t want to miss. Past attendees have described WOMAD is the most well-organised festival they’ve been to. This is a good sign for discerning festival veterans. With six stages there’s plenty to explore, and you can walk between the different areas of the park with ease. All age groups are catered for, with a Kidzone as well as mini seating grandstands for seniors. The music is of course the main drawcard, and this year’s line-up is one you won’t want to miss. With acts such as BaabaMaal, Staff Benda Bilili, Mad Professor, Batucada Sound Machine, Adam Page, Bombay Royale, and Minuit vs. Gamelan Taniwha Jaya plus many more, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see something you’ve been hanging out for, or discover something new. Much like the diverse range of music, arts and dance during WOMAD, food is presented as a universal language that everybody can enjoy. You can even sit and watch artists give cooking demonstrations of some of their favourite dishes. This year Jax Hamilton, finalist in this year’s MasterChef New Zealand television show, is to host the Nova Energy Taste the World cuisine marquee. The More Than Music section on the WOMAD website reveals more of the extras that make this festival special. The Artists in Conversation programme on the Pinetum Stage offers the chance to learn more about the background of artists as they share their history and musical journeys. Performers will chat informally with their host about their lives, their music, and more. WOMAD has so much more to offer with outdoor film and music workshops, and the chance to unwind in the Village of Wellness. It’s the perfect way to fully learn and enjoy a whole world of experiences without even leaving New Zealand, and we can’t wait to get amongst it. Real Estate have been creating quite the splash in the pool of indie music recently. The psychedelic-poppunk band are hosted and boasted by Domino records, a move that they feel has helped them stay creatively focussed. “Domino records are cool,” muses Mondanile. “They really let you get on with your own thing.” Perhaps it’s the support from Domino that has led to the slicker, smoother sound heard on the band’s sophomore album. “We recorded in a studio; we didn’t do that on our last album. The sound is a lot cleaner and more pleasant sounding.” The group dynamics are smooth – no surprise given that most of the band are childhood mates. The music is sculpted by all members: Martin Courtney (vocals and guitar), Alex Bleeker (bass), Matthew Mondanile (guitar), Jackson Pollis (drums) and Jonah Mauer (keys and guitar). When heading into the studio the group writes and plans the tracks out methodically, although the guitar solos are shredded up improvised style. “We’re a pretty tight band now, we’ve done a lot of live shows.” This current tour has been a long one, going since October (with a few small breaks in between). “It’s my favourite thing when a show
goes well. That’s the best thing about being on tour,” Mondanile says. “The worst though is the lack of sleep… and crappy food.” Mondanile is a pretty hard-working guy. With his own record label in the mix, he is always looking to discover good talent. Kiwi music has flown onto his radar before – he adores ‘80s group Beat Rhythm Fashion and Flying Nun Records. “It’s clean and Kiwi, yet with a post punk feel.” Being flat out touring all over the globe means a lot of focus is on performing well. However, Real Estate are all ready beginning to think and write new material for the future. September will give the boys a break, and will give Mondanile some time to think about his other music project, Ducktails. They boys will soon hit NZ shores, and are excited to have gig support from Sherpa and Cool Rainbows in Auckland, The Golden Awesome and Sleepy Age in Wellington, and with The Shifting Sands in Dunedin. The Saint Comes Marching When you look at the steps Annie Clark AKA St Vincent took before embarking on her solo career, there’s little wonder why fans and critics adore her.
Every few years there emerges a conscious, cerebral and genuinely unique artist. You may have already seen St. Vincent’s video for ‘Cheerleader’, a recent release from her latest album Strange Mercy, in which she’s depicted by director Hiro Murai as a Godzilla-sized realist statue. In fact the video pays homage to Australian artist Ron Mueck, who actually exhibited his giant sized hyper-real sculptures of a new born, a pregnant mother and other characters in the Christchurch Art Gallery last year. It’s even more poignant that the exhibition closed only days before the devastating earthquake in February because, although Clark’s video depicts the sculpture of herself coming to life in front of astonished patrons but crumbling to pieces, like falling masonry as it tries, unsuccessfully to leave the gallery. Clark’s own career has its own gargantuan moments. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she started out on guitar at 12 years, and as a teenager, worked as the tour manager for her uncle’s band, Christian Jazz outfit Tuck & Patti. Later she attended Berklee College of Music, and while there released her first EP Ratsliveonnoevilstar. Shortly after leaving Berklee, Clark returned home to Texas where she joined Tim DeLaughter’s megaupload The Polyphonic Spree, just before their first European tour. In 2004 she officially left the Spree and then joined Sufjan Stevens’ touring band in 2006, and bringing with her a tour EP Paris Is Burning (three tracks, including a cover of Jackson Browne’s ‘These Days’). Two years ago, Clark got serious, recording her debut Marry Me under the moniker St. Vincent, which won the hearts of critics and musos alike. Compared to Kate Bush and Bowie’s more experimental efforts, the album’s precocious arrangements and elegant lyrics steadily grew crowds who were astonished by her musical capabilities and magnetic stage presence.
Actor quickly followed - a beguiling, sophisticated album that built on the ambition of her debut with angular pop, grandiose songwriting and even more masterful, confident arrangements. Clark had found an idiosyncratic writing process with a total immersion into her favorite cinema including Badlands, Pierrot le Fou, The Wizard of Oz and Stardust Memories. Consequently each song was a sort of secret film score revealing its storyline in hushed, with cunning couplets and stanza. This time last year, Clark tweeted that she’d begun on her new work, Strange Mercy, which opens with a nod to French new wave great Éric Rohmer’s 1972 Vaseline lens lust-fest Chloe in the Afternoon. Clark donned stilettos to take the story to darker places. Chloe carries a “black lacquered horse-hair whip,” and is presumably paid to inflict it on the white-collar exhibitionists who seek a sadistic teatime fix. Sometimes it’s hard to know if the song by the same name is sung from under the boot or with the heel firmly planted on tender nether regions. “Physically, I’m a very demure-looking person,” Clark was quoted by Pitchfork.com, “but I certainly have as much aggression or anger as the next person.” The aforementioned ‘Cheerleader’ twists with the lines, “I’ve played dumb when I knew better / tried too hard just to be clever,” like a serial killer with a revolver. No direct correlation with the faux-Mueck imagery of the video, but a fine telling of Clark’s trademark balance between fragility and violent outbursts of colour and noise. Written by Tim Gruar

album reviews Nathan Haines The Poet ’s Embrace llll
It’s immediately obvious from the opening of Haines’ eighth release that this live analogue jazz recording is worlds away from the loops and samples of previous efforts. This time there’s no hiding. Whilst the distinctive reeds (a newly selected classic 1964 Selmer Mark VI tenor sax) are still upfront they never dominate the show. In turn Thomas Botting (bass) and Alain Koetsier (skins) give Haines the “fire” he needs to ignite through these numbers – especially on ‘Ancestral Dance’ which dials up the spirit and soul of Coltrane and Mingus. There’s a tender moment on the lovely theme ‘Offering’, featuring Kevin Field’s magical piano which stretches out with incandescent

When you condense the f-yeah-let’s-party vibe of a band built for live music into a solid object, there’s a danger that you’ll end up a few elements short of an atom. Not in this case. This record would be down Steven ‘Lady Face’ Tyler’s alley. He wouldn’t miss a thing. No matter how hard he tried to fight the botox and close his eyes. It kicks off with a painfully honest love song, ‘If you break my heart, I’ll break your face’, and slips straight into the pleading, ‘Do you think I’m ugly’. These two tracks set the tone for the rest of the record. Noisy, the right kind of loose, funny and under pinned with a wry maturity. This over-arching attitude is present in spades in ‘I’m only 28 but I’ve got lots of problems’, a track with almost makes you feel that maturity is going to get more awkward than it already is. If this record was edible, it would be the hybrid of a double bacon cheeseburger and a tofu salad. It’s trashy and makes you feel a little greasy, but that’s the smart choice, because it’s really good for your insides.
Ah, Rufus. Why won’t he just stay pigeonholed? Throughout an admirable yet frustrating career his assorted passions for opera, musical theatre, Judy Garland and disco have led him down many paths, yet he always takes it back to the crossroads. Let’s consult the file: child of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and dear departed Kate McGarrigle, an openly gay performer, outspoken social activist yet with his own closet of serious addictions. Ahah! The title track of this, his seventh work, couldn’t sum him up better: the older, wiser sage broodingly advises the young queen spreading his wings as he takes to the troll-bars for the first time. The line between sincerity and irony is so blurred the listener can’t help blushing when the point comes through. Help from Sean Lennon, Wilco’s Nels Cline and younger sister Martha adds diversity, and Mark Ronson’s slick production, especially on the careening ‘Montauk’, sets Wainwright up as the campest, yet coolest of hep-crooners.
The name says it all really: quirky, unexpected and unquestionably cute. Heavenly vocals tempered with Celtic tone, glam synths and even a bit of baroque influence playfully and deliberately adorn this album. Imagine The Cranberries meeting Florence + The Machine at a Gary Glitter concert. Then they all cut loose. Houghton uses wordplay like a sharpened sword, slicing and compartmentalising tracks into prisms that change tempo and key abruptly, providing an original and stimulating listening experience. Each track shines with its own individual brilliance. ‘Dodecahedron’ rises on blocks of percussion and orchestral arrangement so boldly that it’s certain to be dubbed a classic; ‘Lilliput’ exhibits Hooves Of Destiny’s characteristic running drum, peppered with well executed strings that shine on Houghton’s unusual ethereal voice and technical ability. In all, the album sets well for a sunny daytime listen.

on screen JOHN CARTER FILM llll
The first of the American blockbusters to hit this year sets a high standard for the (predominantly superherofocused) event movies to follow. Despite the ambivalent, surprisingly hype-free build up to the movie, it proves a winning mixture of grand adventure and otherworldly awesomeness, all presented within an
impressively epic scope. Although it’s based on a legendary novel that Hollywood has been attempting to adapt for seventy years, John Carter feels fresher than most contemporary blockbusters. The lack of multimedia familiarity with the characters and story benefits the film to no end. The inspiration for successes like

In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, Hollywood specialised in thrillers about well-to-do people whose lives crumble all around them by their own doing. I loved these movies. Hollywood hasn’t made a decent one in years but thankfully the Europeans are stepping up to fill the gap. Following on from French films like Tell No One and The Big Picture, the Norwegian Headhunters tells a gripping story of one man’s life falling apart as he sinks further and further into desperation. I loved it. Many of the elements are familiar, but the setting, the actors and the director’s confident style set them apart. At first glance, Roger Brown (Askel Hennie) doesn’t exactly look like your typical male film
a tangible throughline that proves all too rare in films of this size. The film skews a little young at times, but never so much as to put me off. If you can allow yourself to be carried along by this fantastical story, the rewards are rich.

Star Wars and Avatar is not difficult to discern within John Carter, and it lent the film a classic quality I greatly appreciated. The design of the film is awesome – from the giant albino apes, glittering cities and flying machines to the more or less flawless green-skinned, twelvefoot-tall Tharks – everything pops nicely on a visual level. All too often, films of this scope feel like all their edges have been ground down in the name of reaching the broadest possible audience. I got a sense while watching John Carter that the vision of director Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) was being delivered without compromise. There is
protagonist. He’s small and wiry with bulging eyes. But he delivers an intense performance that pulled me along violently. He undergoes an unglamorous mid-film transformation and it’s difficult to picture a major film star being willing to suffer such indignities on screen. Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau cuts a nice line in inscrutability as a former mercenary whom Hennie teams up with. His performance bodes well for his future film career. Although he’s been publishing books since 1997, Jo Nesbo is one of many Scandanavian thriller writers being tagged as “the next Stieg Larsson”. If Headhunters is anything to go by, I welcome further adaptations of his work. WRITTEN BY DOMINIC CORRY, FLICKS.CO.NZ
I’ll admit to a having a flicker of doubt about what a Monroe film starring a serious actress would turn out like (potentially excruciatingly overwrought, emotionally). A great performance from Michelle Williams was never in doubt though, and by narrowing the focus on Monroe to the glimpse seen by naïve film newbie Colin Clark on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl, this adaptation of his diaries allows us to be briefly drawn into Monroe’s orbit and hurled out of it again. By avoiding following a typical biopic formula, My Week with Marilyn ends up with a great excuse to put this icon back on the big screen where she belongs, and Williams makes the most of her opportunity to
play this so much-larger-thanlife personality. With the exception of the suitably wide-eyed Eddie Redmayne as Clark though, Williams is somewhat let down by the film around her. As the most captivating aspect of the picture, it’s no surprise she stands out amongst its other creative elements but sadly the film’s overall tone is as much TV movie as true cinematic experience, lacking the directorial vision or sense of style to elevate this beyond being a sweet piece of lightweight entertainment. In the end, the film doesn’t make as much of its time on the big screen as its subject did, but it’s worth a watch just for Williams and the charming tale it tells.
