Shit worth announcing
Breaking news Tickets to see Charlie Murphy (of Eddie’s brother and Chappelle’s Show fame) are on sale now. News of the show has been slow, but the comedian will play one night in Auckland on Mon 23 Apr at the Town Hall.
Announcements Scheduled For Take Off
It’s hardly surprising that tickets to Flight of the Conchords are being swept up, and due to that popular demand, some extra shows have been added. Two more shows in Auckland have been announced at Vector Arena, the first being on Friday 29 June and the second on Sunday 01 July. Tickets are available now through Ticket Master, but keep in mind the anti-scalping measure set in place – purchasers are only allowed to buy two tickets per person. It might be worth mentioning that as we go to print the tickets are going quick, so get in there fast. A Christchurch show has also been added to the tour on Tuesday 26 June at the CBS Canterbury Arena, with all proceeds from the ticket sales going to charity, and a third Wellington show has been announced at the Michael Fowler Centre on Thursday 21 June. The news keeps getting better with the announcement that Arj Barker (Dave from the Flight of the Conchords HBO show) will be joining Bret and Jemaine on the tour.
Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman has hinted at New Zealand shows later this year, but nothing’s set in stone. He does intend to bring the band over at some stage, but whether this would be for shows or something else… time will tell. Following the most recent funding decisions from the March NZ on Air round, expect to see new music videos from Annah Mac, Bailter Space, Beastwars, Clap Clap Riot, Collapsing Cities, Cool Rainbows, Delaney Davidson, Die! Die! Die!, Doug Jerebine, Kids Of 88, King Cannons, Lips, The Checks, The Datsuns, Transistors, Zowie and many more.

Six60 will be playing four shows over three days at Auckland’s Powerstation. Originally the band announced they would play one show on Friday 13 April and one on Saturday 14 April, both with support from Iva Lankum. Now that both have sold out, two more shows have been announced on Sunday 15 April. The first show will have doors open at 4pm and will be the band’s first under 18 show in Auckland. The second Sunday show will be 18 and over only, with doors opening at 8pm. Tickets are available now from Six60.co.nz or Ticket Master.

Art In The Dark 2012
The 2012 artist registrations for Auckland’s brightest nightlight Art In The Dark are now open. Last year saw the free illuminated and interactive event at Western Park in Ponsonby draw in over 30,000 visitors over two nights to check out the 33 installations and performances. Now in its third year, organisers are challenging applicants to make things bigger and better for the audience and the environment, ranging from light and sound installations, interactive and spatial projects, video works, artworks, performances, kinetic sculptures and everything and anything else potential artists can think up. Those interested can check out artinthedark.co.nz/2012-artistregistration to examine the brief and read up about everything you’ll need to know to get involved.

A new Auckland theatre company has popped up and is putting on a premiere at the Basement later this month. SCRATCH New Writing are presenting British scripter Keziah Warner and director Benjamin Henson’s Everything She Ever Said To Me, running from Tuesday 17 April through to Saturday 21 April. The first full-length production from the theatre company, and the two Brits helming the show have both worked at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before bringing their chops to New Zealand. Everything She Ever Said To Me is one of those comingof-age tales we love to love, with that beautiful mix of disastrously depressing with hints of half-hope and mystery. Warner’s previous works have been met with rave reviews, so hopes should be high for this one. Tickets are available through iTicket.

Shit Worth Knowing
In Brief...
The upcoming joint show between Bel Biv Devie and Ginuwine on Monday 28 May at Auckland’s Town Hall has been cancelled due to “…the unexpected reunion of New Edition for a North American tour”. Tickets can be refunded from the point of purchase. Here’s a nice plate of musical beef – Cleveland rapper Machine Gun Kelly has been getting into Twitter spats with Kiwis The Naked And Famous. The New Zealand band took to their social innernets and said “This guy… – This ‘artist’ has never once thanked, acknowledged or even asked our permission to use ‘Young Blood’”, in to the rapper apparently stealing/sampling the song to use on his “hommage” [sic] paying song ‘Half Naked and Almost Famous’. It looks like Machine Gun Kelly either did end up having permission or TNAF didn’t want to get into a spat at all, as the above statement from team Naked And Famous was removed from their sites. Following that, team MGK has been tweeting a plethora of baiting messages including (but not limited to) “@TNAF yall deleted your tweet? someone mustve showed u the paperwork of yall APPROVING that sample. Now apologize for ur bitchassness” and “I have documents of The Naked and Famous giving us permission to SAMPLE their song, hence my version: Half Naked and Almost
Famous.” Fame is an omelette, and eggs need to be broke. Jack White’s Third Man Records, celebrating the label’s third anniversary, is releasing an album intended to spin at three revolutions per minutes. WTF? A release was issued to kind of explain and kind of keep the mysticism about the record: “The world’s first 3 RPM record is a study in contradictions… it’s cut at the slowest speed yet it plays faster than anything you’ve ever heard… It’s easy to play but impossible to hear. You put your finger on it to slow it down, but this is not easy… and we estimate it would take 333 days of 33 hours training per day for your finger, hand, and arm muscles to spin at a continuous speed of 3RPM”.
Azealia Banks will be releasing her much anticipated EP 1991 on Tuesday 17 April, which will feature new tracks ‘1991’ and ‘Grand Prix’. The rapper also announced that she has been working on a Lana Del Rey remix as well as a collab with Kanye West. Her track ‘Fuck Up The Fun’, which she worked on with Diplo, is floating around online, and is worth a good hour-on-repeat of your time. Resident king of garage Ty Segall is working on another collaborative LP. Following his splits and collabs with the likes of Thee Oh Sees, Mikal Cronin, The Perverts and plenty more, Ty’s latest effort will be with visual artist Tim Presley AKA White Fence, and is called Hair. The ‘I Am Not A Game’ single is available online for download.

Have you ever tried Marmite? In New Zealand we’re about to run out of it. Oh yes, as far as I remember my parents had it in the fridge but I hated it. Still – it has a lot of vitamin B (thank you Wikipedia) which means that people in New Zealand should take care not to waste it and really just put it on toast. Seriously!

Do hamburgers come from Hamburg? When I was in Tokyo everyone thought so... I don’t know where hamburgers come from, but some other very famous food comes from Hamburg like labskaus, and Astra beer. You never heard of it? Too bad... What book are you reading at the moment? I just finished Payback by Mike Nicol, which was a good read. Earlier this year I read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, which was great and made me laugh a lot. Where do you like to make music? In my studio, ‘cause there’s all the stuff I need there. Favourite drink? Scotch, the cheaper the better.
What influences your music? Everything.
Favourite restaurant/café? Chocolate Fish Cafe in Wellington. I only ever get the bacon and black pudding sandwich, it’s the best.
Where were you when you made the video to ‘Lost My Shadow’? Key west, Florida. Before WMC last year us three (Solomun, Hosh and me) had a couple of days off which we enjoyed a lot.
Favourite takeaway? Te Aro Fish Supply is the best fish and chip shop ever. Favourite colour? Grayish blue maybe. Cobalt. Favourite childhood memory? My whole family singing in the car, but making up weird new lyrics for old songs. Favourite party food? Anything miniature always tastes better. Tiny little pies or tiny sandwiches are awesome. Favourite vice? I’m going to lie and say pizza. Pizza is pretty good though. You should try it. Favourite song? Sam Cooke’s ‘You Send Me’.
What kind of tools do you normally use to make your tracks? I’m producing with Cubase but apart from that I use a lot of different stuff - good hardware (like API 2500 comp), all kinds of software (GRM tools, reaktor and some freeware plugins), microphones and different “real” instruments, percussion, etc...

If you were’nt a producer today, where do you think you would be? I never really thought about that – I made my career decision very early. I probably would be a chef – making music and cooking are very similar to each other. Both are about ingredients and timing...
Favourite meal? Black pudding. Does that count as a meal? Maybe some poached eggs too.
STIMMING
Favourite label to put on your relationship? Competitive spooning competition.

Favourite ‘90s TV show? The Fresh Prince of BelAir, or maybe The Cosby show. Favourite word? Someone told me that everyone’s favourite word is, secretly their own name. So if you use a persons name lots when talking to them they will like you more. I can’t remember anyones’ names... Favourite type of groupie? One with a kind heart and a firm grasp on reality. Bonus points if they have cool shoes or a dorky sidekick.
KEVIN THE MUSICIAL
Favourite body part on you? Elbows. Favourite body part on someone else? Heads. I love people’s heads. They are the best. All my friends have great heads.
STEVE WRIGLEY & CYAN CORWINE INKEVIN THE MUSICIAL SAT 28 APR- SAT 05 MAY 1 X DOUBLE PASS

FRIDAY 06 Dictaphone Blues
Waiheke Jazz Festival
Dux Live
Multiple Venues 8pm, $10, undertheradar.co.nz
iticket.co.nz
Auckland’s Dictaphone Blues take their brand new album on the road this week, kicking off with the first show in Christchurch. Beneath The Crystal Palace is pretty slick and something of a cameo extravaganza. There’s little doubt that the live shows from Edward Castelow, Rob Collins and Myles Allpress will be just as slick. Sllllllick.
The Jazz Festival over on Waiheke Island is always a bit of a big deal. People catch the boat over, drink wine, listen to saxophones and think to themselves, “I’d love to live here.” But living your life according to the ferry timetable is a drag and no one comes to visit you in winter.

Lucha Lounge 8pm, $50, ticketmaster.co.nz
Shihad. The country’s biggest rock band? Maybe. The country’s most famous rock band? Maybe, maybe. My stepdad saw them live at some music awards back in the late ‘90s and said “they should be called shit head” because they were so loud. But he only likes Willie Nelson and Hank Williams, so what does he know.
When a band of loud and unpredictable dudes have played with the likes of The Black Lips and King Brothers, you know what to expect. A shit load of shouting, moshing, a good chance of half-nekkedness and probably a punch here and there. And you wouldn’t want it any other way.

Warbirds Over Wanaka
General Release
Wanaka Airport 10am, $10-$395, warbirdsoverwanaka.co.nz
How many times can one guy constantly fuck his life up in embarrassing teenage ways and still get the girl? The pie-fucker and his crew are back, and it’s a guarantee that they’ve got dick jokes and fart gags aplenty. Who would’ve guessed that Seann William Scott would be the successful actor?
Every time you go to an air show, you subconsciously want to see a crash. That bloodthirsty inhumane side of you wants to see planes collide in the air – admit it. It’s mean, but it’s true. The thing is, it never happens. Which is good, because people would die. And yet it’s family fun for everybody!

The Nathan Club
THE STUDIO 5pm, $20
9pm, $60-$70, lunatix.co.nz
Thank Thor’s mighty hammer that we’re all old enough now to not make egg puns about Easter. None of this “Eggstravaganza” business. It’s so old. Just call things a “party” or a “bash” – it’s fine. Tim Phin, Dick Johnson, Nick D, Thane Kirby, Sweet Mix Kids, MayaVanya and more hold the fort.
They’ve called this the Easter Weekender Zombie Apocalypse for some reason. Not sure what zombies have to do with it. Are the kids using the words “zombie” and “cannibalism” as adjectives now? Anyway, this gig has too many bass and dubstep acts to name. It’s big. It’s face-eatingly big.

“The new V8 SuperTourers are the fastest V8s to ever compete in a domestic series in New Zealand. And with 575 horsepower, hand-built 7L engines and a 100kg weight advantage compared to their Aussie Supercar cousins, they will be stunningly quick wherever they race.” Impressive as hell.

Borderline Festival Whammy & Wine Cellar
The lass with the voice. That’s how my sexist grandfather describes Hollie Smith. I call him on his misogynist shit, but then I’m the one who gets told off? Not cool, my family. My earliest memory of Waihi was getting the nicest hokey-pokey and chocolate ice cream at one of the shops, then going skating at the skate park. Also I got covered in jellyfish once. No doubt there are a bunch of people out there who have no idea who this kid is. But there are also people who do know. Whether he’s a mix of One Direction and Justin Bieber, who’s to say? All that matters is every kid under 15 will cry if they don’t see Reece Mastin.
There’s no fucking with Henry Rollins. What would happen if you did? The guy is super clever and super buff. He’s like the ultimate nightmare of that girl you’re trying to date’s dad. He’s no doubt a really nice guy in real life. But when you’re scarier looking than Rick Santorum’s soul… well, it’s intimidating.

Remember P.O.D.? The nu-metal/rap/ reggae/Christian outfit who were more respectable than Limp Bizkit? They’re playing with and NZ Christian hip-hop rockers Rapture Ruckus in Wellington before heading up to Auckland on Wednesday 11 April.
Three-time Grammy Award-winner and all round down-home country gal Lucinda Williams makes her welcome return to New Zealand. When a singer gets props from the likes of Bob Dylan and M. Ward, you know she’s a veritable talent sandwich.

Is it cool to really, really want to see this show? Last time I went to a musical it was with my nana and my best friend. We went to see Menopause: The Musical. I learned so much. I can only imagine that the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons will be just as… insightful.

This is a pretty great idea for a show. When footage of a 6pm news anchor misbehaving goes viral, both her network and the competition have less than 24 hours to package the story. As well as that, the performance is interactive, using smartphone technology and live filming.

The World Cinema Showcase in the capital runs from Thursday 05 April through to Sunday 22 April. This teaser for the upcoming NZ International Film Festival also features films that, for whatever reason, missed out on last year’s NZIFF. Head to worldcinemashowcase.co.nz for the full programme.

Kids on holiday? Need something to do with them for the day? Or maybe you just wanna jam with some tiny little animals? It’s living the internet in real life, except instead of links to tumblr it’s baby penguins in real life. Kelly Tarlton’s Baby Animal Season runs from Friday 06 April through to Sunday 22 April.
The TSB Bank New Zealand Surf Festival gets closer to winding up as the second-to-last day of the gettogether goes down on Saturday. Make a day of it, take the little groms, practice your completely out-ofdate surf lingo and wear board shorts like you don’t even care that they look ridiculous.

You may recognise Ben 10 as the kid-but-also-alien all over toy section at the Warehouse. Your kids love him, and they’ll love you for getting them tickets. You can just scoff, that’s fine. Just think of the children.
The New Zealand International Jazz & Blues Festival continues as Tui Awardwinning songstress Ameria Grenell takes to the stage. See her prove her chops freshly back from her Australian sets with the iconic Fly My Pretties.

- The Stuff Of Legend Admit it. Did you ever really think you’d see a dragon in real life? The How To Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular is the closest chance you’ll Get.
It was last year when the overwhelmingly popular Walking With Dinosaurs came to town. The stage was lit up with life-sized monsters that took us back to an age long since passed. Reviews were positive. But an adult critiquing such a family friendly (read – totally for the kids) experience will come with overly analytical statements, needlessly taking the magic out of the moment. So let’s expand the realm. Let’s make things more magical, more magnificent… let’s make everything more. The live action arena spectacular How To Train Your Dragon arrives at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Wednesday 18 April. Based on the DreamWorks animated film of the same name, the performance came together thanks to Global Creatures (the minds behind the Walking With Dinosaurs) and DreamWorks Theatricals. You may or may not be familiar with the original How To Train Your Dragon, which was, in all honesty, one of the best films to come out of the DreamWorks Animation stable. What we’re used to seeing from the animation giant is celebrity voices, gag scenes and mediocre storytelling with little longevity. Think Shrek, Madagascar, Over The Hedge, Chicken Run or Bee Movie. These films don’t deliver the same impact we’ve come to expect from the crown royalty of animated films, Pixar (Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Wall-E, Ratatouille). But in 2010 How To Train Your Dragon came out to rave reviews. All of a sudden the famous voices weren’t just what DreamWorks films relied on – here we had a good story, good characters, great voice work, topnotch animation and a new world that was delivered to us in a handy, easily understandable and well explained manner. Vikings and dragons may not be as cool as they used to for you and me. Now it’s all about ninjas and pirates, or greasers and squares. But for those whose imaginations are dulled with rent, taxes or mortgages, there’s still a magical world that is untouched. How To Train Your Dragon makes that world visible and audible. It brings that world to life. What I’m getting at here is that there’s little surprise that this film was the one to go on to make something of itself. The producers of the arena version saw how much Walking With Dinosaurs impressed people and spotted a gap in the market. DreamWorks, already having a good story with huge potential (and a slight similarity to WWD) developed the story further and reimagined the already familiar tale, making it what it is today – a franchise. There’s a lot to factor in to the show with 24 dragons, some of which have wingspans that reach 14 metres. There’s the pyrotechnics, there’s utilising the space, there are the stunts, there’s the infusion of circus performances, and there’s giant bloody creatures that have been used in legends since… well, centuries ago. Sure, we’ve seen them on the television and at the movies. But seeing them live is something else. It’s an interesting thing to imagine – these creatures you’ve known of your whole life are coming to life. With the fire and everything. Not to blow smoke (zing), but it’s kind of a big deal when you think of it that way.

Obviously the creators are going to talk the show up. That’s their job. It’s a little different when the reviews come in – has the show delivered? Is it everything that the audience, regardless of age, expected and wanted? Having recently debuted in Melbourne, it would seem that How To Train Your Dragon is living up to expectations. The Herald Sun called it “terrorising and charming”, adding that it trumps Walking With Dinosaurs and received four out of five stars. If any kinks were apparent, we can only hope that those will have been sorted so we can get a better show than the Aussies. Producers have promised that the show will “break every rule of traditional arena entertainment”, and the designers of the creatures have said that they’ve used what was learned form the Walking With Dinosaurs shows to improve the technology. It’s all very state of the art with computers and wires or wi-fi or Bluetooth or something. It’s all very mechanical, I’m sure. It would have to be – the show literally leaves the ground and continues in the air. As mentioned before, there’s an audible aspect to think of as well. Since we’re all such harsh critics and demand nothing but the best for our time and money. Enter the score, composed by none other than Jonsi from Icelandic prog-harmony-noise-rock-just like heavers Sigur Ros as well as Oscar-nominated British film composer John Powell who created the original score for the film. All of this comes down to one thing, and that’s entertainment. Yes, this is one of those shows that the kids will dig. But you’re supposed to enjoy it too. Approaching the idea that it’s only meant for the young-uns is the same ignorant mantra that assumes any animated cartoon is for children. That’s an incorrect way of thinking. So let’s expand the realm, and let’s see some dragons fly around and breathe fire. Let’s relive that imaginary world our kids’ minds still inhabit. Or, you know, go sit at a desk and pay your taxes. - Steve Wrigley You think you’re all in to comedy and such, but hey, listen up: You have no idea how to approach the Comedy Festival. I do.
My name is Steve Wrigley and I am pretty average. I am either cooler then the thickest person you know, or all your mates are all cooler then me. True fact. When I’m not saving the universe and setting off coloured explosions of disappointment* I’m on 7 Days or performing stand up that Carter Nixon from Wellington thinks is terrible, but my Mum thinks is amazing. I love the NZ International Comedy Fest. It’s the best three weeks of the calendar year. From the Gala to Last Laughs I’ll be with every almost famous comedian in the world who knows where the best party is. Terry Alderton is on his way back, and so is Marcel Lucont. And yes, thank the pretty prince of parties, so is Mr Jason John Whitehead. That would be enough for me, but look who they kidnapped and stuffed in sacks – why, Andrew O’Niell and some other fun looking acts too. These immigrant job-stealing hacks are worth both your eyeballs and ear bits. I’ve seen all of them before, and I’ve never seen the same thing twice. International Live Show Jedi Elite. They will be in their own shows as well as making appearances at Late Laughs with the likes of Myself, Urzilla Carlson and Justine Smith. Late Laughs is epical times. Oh, by the way, new rule, you can only come to a late show if you see at least one actual show. You losers who just come to the late shows “coz it’s cheap and you get to see a bunch of acts for like $20 bro” aren’t welcome. When I’m hosting, you better be able to hold up a ticket stub or a ticket for something else in the festival or you’re getting the treatment. You don’t want the treatment. The Late Show is for us. The festival hardcore. The people who pick up a programme, pick out a few shows, book their tickets, book the restaurant, invite their mates or drink alone. We’re there to see the acts we love in a more relaxed atmosphere. The pressure is off. So are the cameras and other recording devices. That’s a new rule too. It probably should have been an old rule. RE: Is this you in Jan Maree’s panties on stage with a bottle of Jager? FROM: Mates. I mentioned Justine Smith. I know what’s going to be amazing this festival: The Pitch. I’ve had a sniff of what Smith and Pink are up to and it smells like genius. So does Vance Fontaine in Command Performance. Again, sneak peeks; again, hyperventilation from the amazemagasms.

Wellingtonians: get to Bats. Aucklanders: hit the Basement and the Herald (Theatre). That’s where all the most creative, unique and genius comedy will be happening. Guaranteed. The locals are going all out. For standup comedy, San Fran and the Fringe bar will carry Wellington’s flag. As will Cavern Club – I had the pleasure of doing a gig there in Feb. Potentially entering the stage via a toilet door are comedians like and including Tom Furniss. He’s my pick for the 2013 Billy T Award. Who’s betting? In Auckland, the Classic Comedy and Bar will remain the Citadel** of our entire festival. It will play host to the best in local and international standup and its walls will again absorb many a scandalous secret. Janey Godley will be there. There’s not enough paper in the world to write on about Janey Godley. She is going to karate chop this year’s Comedy Gala in half and then lay waste to audiences in a giant, Scottish armourgeddon of hilarity. She’s twice as hot as Danny Bhoy and ten times as funny. And that’s on an off day. Cal Wilson is back for the first time in too long. She’s my all time favorite guest on 7 Days. I don’t know what it is but, Ego is so much nicer to me when she’s on the show. She is the Duchess de’ Chuckles. Go to any of the shows or places I just mentioned at this year’s festival and you’ll be getting your money’s worth in mirth. If you see me there and you’re not a dick, head over and say “snicklefritz” and I’ll buy you a drink. You can have whatever you want as long as it’s a CC and dry. I know how to approach a festival. It’s all about the flaps. Kylie, Debs, Loz and the girls (Yes, Spencer, you are a girl) have put a great gig together for you. Get amongst it. By flaps I meant airplanes and stuff. Airplanes be all funny and approachin’ and stuff. WRITTEN BY Stephen Andreus Alduin Beefcake Wrigley Comedian. Writer. Expert Sandwich Assembler.

NZ INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FEATIVAL 2012 FRI 27 APRIL- SUN 20 MAY MULTIPLE VENUES, NATIONWIDE
- Justin Townes Earle -
- HENry Rollins I hadn’t heard either way if former Black Flag frontman and US punk pioneer Henry Rollins was intimidating or not. But somehow the heavily muscular physique, tattoos and square jaw, combined with the knowledge that he uses body building as an anger management technique, did not reassure me. Initially just a fan of Californian hard core rockers Black Flag, one night Rollins joined the band on stage and ended up replacing their vocalist (who’d departed shortly before under highly acidic conditions). Moreover, not only did he know their material incredibly well, but he was prepared to do the lion’s share the work. Rollins helped build the US punk band from the ground up, almost single handedly – he wrote the music, booked the gigs, and lugged the gear. He brought a more serious tone to the band. More recently, Rollins has been touring with ‘80s alt-legends Dinosaur Jr. “Their rhythm section is the best ever,” he enthuses. “I’m a fan, so watching them every night on stage is great enjoyment for me.” When he’s not on tour, Rollins’ day-to-day workload is prolific. Last year alone he took on 50+ radio shows, wrote a weekly LA Times column, and released two books (including Occupants, a book of his photography from about 40 countries). He also made appearances in three documentaries and took a guest role on Sons Of Anarchy.
Growing up in South Nashville, Justin Townes Earle started out as just a Southern bad boy growing up in a single parent home. “I was pretty much raised by my mother,” he says. “My dad [maverick country artist Steve Earle] would breeze through town on tour. He actually had very little impact on me, despite being an absentee father, a touring musician, and a raging drug addict. He turned up when I was in my teens but by then I was ‘off to the races’ – in bands, smoking and drinking. I didn’t have much time for him.” Something must have rubbed off, with Earle starting on hard drugs himself early at the age of 12. By his late teens, he’d developed a serious addiction. “I was a very ‘inner city kid’ – home alone a lot – and I got into all the trouble a unsupervised kid could get into,” reflects Earle. “Unfortunately it bled over into my adulthood, and I didn’t stop acting like a child until I was about 25 years old. So that created a lot of problems in my life, obviously. And when I finally came out of it, I just exploded and wrote a lot of music.” Earle swaggered through adolescence playing in rock band The Distributors and bluegrass combo The Swindlers, before moving on to playing guitar and keys for his dad’s touring band The Dukes. “But I was pretty hungry appetite for drugs and trouble,” recalls Earle. As a result he was shamefully dismissed from the band. “I was a pretty bratty kid and these old guys didn’t want a drugged up little snot messing up their show.” Earle then went solo, putting out four albums and getting into a heap more trouble before settling down in the Big Apple. “Living in NYC - I thought about where I can constantly change because change inspires me. The thing about New York is that it’s always moving on. Nashville’s a place for people was waiting for things to happen. I wanted to be in a city where people make things happen!” Of his current work and tour, Earle is philosophical. “It’s taken a long time but with the revival of Americana, people have reference points to those cool old records their granddad liked. They accept my music on that level, too. People have always had an ear for the old cool stuff.” WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR SEE HIM LIVE: JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE THU 19 APR DUX DE LUX, CHRISTCHURCH FRI 20 APR BAR BODEGA, WELLINGTON SAT 21 APR KINGS ARMS, AUCKLAND SUN 22 APR LEIGH SAWMILL CAFÉ, AUCKLAND
“I do lots of things,” he explains. “I’m busy… Working seven days a week. I’m very utilitarian. I never considered myself an artist; between shows, I’m unemployed. So when the Sons Of Anarchy people said ‘would you like to do this role’ I said ‘yes!’. In this country you gotta keep working.” Political activity, especially recently with the Occupy Movement, has been Rollins’ main source of inspiration for his current spoken word tour, and Wall Street greed incenses him even in our phone conversation. “Protest and they call you a socialist,” he fumes. “But even though they have billions, they still want the $85 in your pocket as well!” He doesn’t hold back, but politics isn’t all that’s on the agenda. “It’s me on stage,” he says. “Stories from my travels.” Finally I ask if he will ever go back to music. “I’ve done everything I can with music.” Will Black Flag ever reform? “I don’t know how else I can tell you… NO!” WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR SEE HIM LIVE: HENRY ROLLINS WED 11 APR CLARENCE ST THEATRE, HAMILTON THU 12 APR DUX LIVE, CHRISTCHURCH FRI 13 APR THE OPERA HOUSE, WELLINGTON SAT 14 APR SKYCITY THEATRE, AUCKLAND

album reviews The Mars Volta Noctournquet lllll
Considering the pace at which The Mars Volta usually put out albums, Octahedron’s release back in 2009 feels like an age ago. They’re a band that’s constantly evolving and trying out new ideas. The buzzing synths of opening track ‘The Whip Hand’ clue you into their new frame of mind – as if they’re trying to shake off the past in favour of a bizarre future. Noctourniquet fluctuates wildly from dense psychedelics (‘In Absentia’) to nightmarish lullabies (‘The Malkin Jewel’) to soothing space ballads (‘Empty Vessels Make The Loudest Sound’), all wrapping up with

the exhilarating rush of ‘Zed And Two Naughts’. Six records into their lifespan, and band leaders Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala are the group’s only two consistent members, which speaks a lot to their shape-shifting abilities. Noctourniquet is another surreal, challenging record in their already formidable catalogue. WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

Laced with summer chic and a plethora of pop hooks, Sherpa have a new slice of DIY music magic to offer. Hot off an opening spot at the Laneway Festival this year, they’re currently in the middle of a nationwide tour in support of their self-produced and self-released full length debut, Lesser Flamingo. By being involved in the creative process at every level, Sherpa have managed to come out with something that feels personal and special, without falling into overindulgence. Playful synth tones weave throughout the album, intertwining with lead vocalist Earl Sans’ distinctive melodies and helping give the album a polished feel. In between the crowd pleasers like ‘Lunar Bats’ and ‘Turtles’ are gems like ‘Samsong’, which blisters with punk-ish drumming, and ‘I’m Happy Just To Lie’, a fairgroundesque slice of psychedelic ska. It’s tracks like these that create an album imbued with the irresistible enthusiasm of the terribly young.
Lean, agile and brimming with creativity, Odd Future are bringing rap music back to the ethos that began it all: making a lot out of a little. Though they have already amassed a dedicated following and a planet-sized hype, The OF Tape Volume 2 marks the first official album from this South LA based collective. Tyler, The Creator in particular shines with talent at the ripe old age of 21; his production work on this album is economical and enthralling, and his blending of beats from various hip-hop eras leaves an indelible mark on the album. ‘White’ and ‘Oldie’ stand out as prime examples of what this group is all about, however as the tracks roll on it all begins to sound like a collection of demos and b-sides; there’s little cohesion, and each song works far better standing on its own than it does propped up amongst the other tracks.
James Mercer returns to front The Shins with a new band and optimistic attitude. Fourth album Port Of Morrow injects upbeat electronic-tinged power pop into the veins of The Shins’ trademark ‘60s folk sound. This is most evident in the jangling riffs and handclaps of ‘No Way Down’ and saxophone driven funk tune ‘Fall Of ‘82’. However, the meandering bluesy guitar waltz ‘For A Fool’ is reminiscent of Chutes Too Narrow’s ‘Pink Bullets’. Lyrically, Port Of Morrow explores the trials and tribulations of love; Mercer wears his heart on his sleeve like a badge of honour, earnestly expressing emotions via whimsical metaphors creating depth. The refrain, “Love is the ink in the well when her body writes” in ‘September’, an ode to his wife, perfectly conveys Mercer’s blissful state of mind.
Every Fly My Pretties project tops the last, introducing to us new and emerging arts, both musical and visual. On this latest CD/DVD set we hear from Aaron Tokona (Cairo Knife Fight), the stunning Amiria Grenell, bassist Fran Kora (who also plays the koauau for Grenell) and banjo maestro Justin “Firefly” Clarke. Also returned is the immensely talented graphic artist Flox (Hayley King). Flox opens the show by spraying a stencil on an old school overhead projector and sets the mood for the tracks to come, the first being Weir’s own ‘Doorstep Blues’ and the animated postage stamps of ‘Dr Plumb’. While the music is a breathtaking showcase of every artist in the collective, the strength of this set is in the sum of its parts. Production and sound is crystal clear, spot on, preserving the mood and magic on stage. If you missed the live show, don’t fret - this package will give you a front row seat and a backstage pass. Treasure it.

on screen ATTACK THE BLOCK FILM llll
Fish Tank meets Skyline in this hilarious and arresting British sci-fi comedy. While the Pitch Black/Alien hybrid creatures (described in the film as the result of a party at a zoo where a “monkey got with a fish”) are nothing particularly new, the film’s swagger and band of teen antiheros are
a welcome change from the typical gung-ho marines, essential everymen and narcissistic yuppies who inhabit the likes of Battle Los Angeles, Falling Skies and The Darkest Hour in what is becoming an increasingly over-exposed and underwhelming genre. Writer-director Cornish
manages to meld the Ken Loachian with the Joe Dante as he plays with camera angles, changes in pace, black humour and growing tension to create a thrilling and engaging tale. Atmosphere is added by Stephen Price’s spooky score, but it’s the sense of realism which sets this apart. The boys’ actions have consequences and it becomes personal (“his best friend got ate and he’s a bit vexed about it,” is one simple summation). And while they are eventually prepared to “man up”, Cornish’s characters aren’t afraid to confess their fears:

In an era of pointless remakes, 2010’s Clash of the Titans had a bit of potential, using CGI for its mythological creatures in place of the Ray Harryhausen stop-motion animation – now too dated for mainstream audiences – that made the early-‘80s original so spectacular. But then it turned out to be not a very good film and was also poorly post-converted to 3D with some glaring glitches. Despite this, it still took close to $500 million worldwide, so here’s an inevitable sequel and luckily one that is an improvement. Because, as the floating embers that constantly hover in front of the screen remind us, this time the 3D works properly. Other than that, it’s mostly business as usual with wooden ol’ Sam Worthington returning
“Right now I feel like going in and locking my door and playing Fifa”. Best described as a British version of South Korea’s The Host, Block even answers the curly question of what to do when aliens invade and you’ve only got enough money for one text.
as Perseus (this time dropping all pretence at speaking with anything other than an Australian accent). An unwelcome addition is a newfound need to inject quips and wisecracks into the dialogue, modern banter at odds with the seriousness of the film’s apocalyptic scenario. Isn’t a flying horse enough light relief? Let’s get real, this has no aspirations to be anything other than a blockbuster and on that front it fares okay, better than its predecessor on a couple of fronts – its mythical monsters and a spectacular sequence inside the moving underground dungeon of Tartarus. The story’s high stakes never connect emotionally, though, making for a tensionless and excitementfree version of The Lord of the Rings, albeit mercifully shorter. WRITTEN BY STEVE NEWALL, FLICKS.CO.NZ
We’ve been waiting a long time for a film adaptation of Dr Seuss’s darkest and most thought-provoking tale, but is this the Lorax film we really needed? The animation looks crisp, there are some moments of inspired 3D (involving whitewater rapids and a climatic car chase) and the humming fish are a scene-stealing delight, but there’s just something missing in translation from that most powerful book. Perhaps it’s the Lorax himself, who seems shunted into the periphery as the focus falls clearly and squarely on young Ted and his girl-inspired tree search. Whilst Danny DeVito is an inspired choice for his voice, he’s left with little to do other than be the voice of doom and be the victim of countless acts of physical abuse. Yes, rather
than frighten the kiddies with too much environmental gloom (my four-year-old pronounced it scary but not too scary), the producers have instead decided to up the cartoon violence and song-and-dance numbers – which are sadly unmemorable both musically and lyrically (the latter surely a crime given the source material). Despicable Me director Chris Renaud’s fingerprints are clearly all over the film, from the pint-sized villain (Vector with a sharper wardrobe but dodgier haircut) to the minion-esque Barbaloots, but the subversive humour that marked out that movie is much more muted here.
