Disposable Memories

Auckland curatorial collective In House are gearing up for their next creative collaboration. Your Disposable will be the next art exhibition set up by In House, and submissions are being taken now. The aim of the show is to get people to send in their disposable cameras and contribute their still memories of sweaty festivals, backyard barbeques, road trips, late night parties and anything else that has tickled your memory’s fancy. The opening party will be curated by In House Creative Projects in correspondence with the Auckland Festival of Photography in June, and all submissions must be received by Tuesday 15 May at the latest. For more information about the upcoming exhibit, other In House collaborations or to see how to get involved in Your Disposable head to inhousecreativeprojects.com/your-disposable or look up In House on Facebook.

An Emerald City have announced their last gig. The sad news that the band have decided to part for “an indefinite period of time” came last week, when they cited that the logistical issues of members being based overseas was putting too much of a strain on recording and touring together. The final gig will be a free show in Auckland on Saturday 28 April at St Kevin’s Arcade on K Road, where the band played their first official show back in 2006. The show will be an early one, with An Emerald City playing at 8pm sharp and finishing by 9:30pm for curfew. There’s little doubt that the show will be a busy one, so mark it in your diary.

New Zealand’s shining star of gal rock Ladyhawke has announced two shows in July. The blonde bombshell will play at Wellington’s San Fran Bath House on Friday 13 July and at Auckland’s Studio on Saturday 14 July. The Tui Award-winning star will be celebrating her upcoming album Anxiety which is being released on Friday 25 May, and will no doubt be delivering some of the more familiar songs we’re used to. Tickets are on sale now through Ticket Master, Under The Radar, Real Groovy, Rhythm Records and Rough Peel.

13/05 Our pick Get the Golden Ticket

The New Zealand Music Foundation has announced one hell of a good deal for music fans. Following the launch last month, the NZMF is giving you the chance to win attendance to free gigs for an entire year. Anyone who joins the Foundation by Sunday 13 May will go into the draw to win any two tickets to any public concert or festival being held in New Zealand from the beginning of June to the end of May 2013. That includes the local folk duo at your local pub and the biggest headliner to ever headline Vector Arena – as many concerts as you want for an entire year. Members will also be giving the opportunity to be the first to purchase any Foundation event, such as the upcoming Neil Finn and Don McGlashan curated concert being held at Vector Arena in November. Annual membership is $35, and you can find out more information at musicfoundation.co.nz. There is of course some fine print, but still.

17/05 Three Headed Beast

Autozamm, November Zulu and Invader Cain are teaming up for six shows around the north island in May. The trio of rock acts will play Wellington, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Auckland. These shows will see Autozamm tour for the first time in just under a year when the band was celebrating their album 5th Degree, and now the Aucklanders will be boasting their chops with some new material they’ve been practising at Roundhead Studios. November Zulu have also been busy at Roundhead, recording their upcoming EP No More Fun and Games. Invader Cain will be celebrating their upcoming EP release as well with Feeling the Trend but Thinking Again, which has been in the works at York Street Studios. Presale tickets for all shows are available through Eventfinder.

Prince fans get excited – symbol himself is heading to Australia in May for three shows. There’s no word on any New Zealand appearances and it’s best not to hold your breath, but it’s just a quick trip across the ditch for those wanting to see the man in action. Prince will be playing at Allphones Arena in Sydney on Friday 11 May, Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Monday 14 May and at the Entertainment Centre in Brisbane on Friday 18 May.

Favourite drink? The Big Fizz’s Crisp Apple.

The Simpsons Matt Groening revealed to smithsonian.com the actual Springfield that the show is based in – Springfield, Oregon. Groening said “The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show Father Knows Best took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realised it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’” This (kind of) puts to rest the constant questioning of which US state The Simpsons is based in (if any). The show is known for throwing out clues (read: red herrings) about which state the city of Springfield resides in.

Before making tracks across the oceans, Tiny Ruins will be playing one show in Auckland at The Wine Cellar on Sunday 22 April with Simon Comber and Steve Able and in Dunedin at Chicks Hotel on Friday 27 April with Robert Scott. Axl Rose has declined his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The rest of the Guns N’ Roses crew is all there, but in a letter that Axl wrote to the Hall of Fame he said that he would not be turning up to the ceremony and would “respectfully decline” the induction. What do you think – crazy or martyr?

9pm, FREE

You have no idea how much you’re going to enjoy this show. Sure, The Sonics are older now. But the kings of garage fought their way through the ‘60s and are still going. Seeing The Sonics ss like finding out that your granddad runs 15 kilometres a day. He’s better than you.

The weekly sets of Thursday Night Live down at Auckland’s Britomart have been displaying some A-class talent on a regular basis. This week we see Glass Owls play at 1885 thanks to this week’s host Pikachunes. Taye Williams and Velvet Sound Society are also featured on the roster at this up and coming club night.

Being a teenager is the pits. No one understands you and the only way to vent is to write in your diary. Then your mum comes along sticking her nose in your beeswax and you’re all “Mum! Get out of my room! You don’t get me!” and then you make a play out of it.

When my nephew sees Ben 10 on television he goes apeshit and starts pretending he’s got an omnitrix on his wrist. I know what you’re thinking. What’s an omnitrix? Silly rabbit, omnitrix are for kids. Take your son/daughter/niece/nephew to see Ben 10 and you’ll be their favourite parent/aunty/uncle.

If you like country town boys with tattoos, poetic minds, nice manners, family issues and a troubled heroin past and probably rides fixies then odds are you’ll think that Justin Townes Earle is a total panty dropping babe. And you’d be right.

American born blues-head Big Daddy Wilson found his calling in northern Germany of all places. So if you’ve ever wondered what North Carolina infused German blues sounds like, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better example than this line-up.

When I was about 12 or something I’d listen to Goodshirt, PanAm and Marcy Playground and I’d think I was real cool. I’d listen to Channel Z and hear Bomber and Clarke Gayford talk about dumb shit. Half of you won’t know what the fuck I’m talking about. But the half that do – let’s get nostalgic.

Some Assembling Required It’s a hard life having to be in charge of billionaires, super soldiers, gods and monsters. Only Samuel L. Jackson, playing Nick Fury in Marvel’s The Avengers, could handle that kind of job.

Samuel L. Jackson is no stranger to Marvel’s world of Super Heroes. The veteran actor has played Nick Fury (director of the peacekeeping organisation S.H.I.E.L.D.) in the Iron Man films, Captain America and Thor. In The Avengers, Jackson’s Fury takes centre stage as he assembles the team to thwart a threat endangering the entire world. “It’s great to be the guy who is the organiser,” Jackson says. “My character, Nick Fury, also knows his limitations in terms of who these Avengers are and what they’re capable of doing. He’s the guy who has the raison-d’être that kind of understands the threat and has to get them to understand the nature of it.” But putting together a cohesive team of exceptional superheroes, who have essentially always worked alone, can be a tough task even for the iconic Fury. Jackson comments on the team building: “Egos are egos. You don’t want to change a person’s personality, but you do want them to understand that unity means a lot more than the individual.” Describing his character’s relationships with members of The Avengers team, Jackson points out: “Nick Fury has a good relationship with Black Widow. He has an interesting relationship with Iron Man because of his relationship with Tony Stark’s father. Fury trusts Captain America and has confidence in his ability to help him with the team. “He doesn’t know Thor very well, but trusts him too, in a specific kind of way,” Jackson continues. “In the case of Doctor Banner, everybody has this healthy fear of him because we don’t know when he’s going to change and when he changes he’s not rational at all. “Hawkeye, Clint Barton, is one of Fury’s agents and in the original derivation of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Barton was one of the people who had helped him form [the organisation], so their relationship is close.” As far as Fury’s relationship with his second in command Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders, Jackson admits that it is “a bit contentious”. According to Jackson, co-star Robert Downey Jr. always brings a “specific kind of energy” to his roles. “As actors, we respect each other,” he says about

working with him. “We’ve known each other for a long time and I enjoy watching Robert work and I think he enjoys watching me work, which works very well for us.” Jackson also spent a lot of time with Scarlett Johansson before Marvel’s The Avengers, having worked with her on the film The Spirit. He feels that she brings “toughness and savvy” to her role of Black Widow that women like to see in female characters. “She embraces the toughness of her character and she makes it seem effortless,” Jackson explains. Marvel’s The Avengers is the first film that Jackson has made with director Joss Whedon. Commenting on what he believes Whedon brings to the film, Jackson says, “Joss brings true understanding of what a comic book is and what comic book characters represent to the people who are going to watch the film. “There are so many characters that have their own individual personalities and he knows how to set up the conflicts between the characters, how to resolve them and how to make us all feel like a big unit when we start to work together,” concludes Jackson. Recalling how excited everybody was when cast members showed up on stage at Comic-Con, Jackson has an idea of what audiences will be expecting when Marvel’s The Avengers hits theatres this summer. “I do think that they want an exciting film; I do think that they want a film that does have some complexity and I do think that they want a conclusion that’s extremely heroic and not just ‘heroic’ and hopefully we’ll be able to do that.”

DAVID O’DOHERTY Comedian David O’Doherty wasn’t always all fun and games. Born in Dublin towards the ass-end of 1975, initially he was going to be a professional cyclist, and then a jazz musician. “My father was a talented pianist. He just sort of fell into it during the ‘60s and was very good. And I was all keen to join the family business but alas I was a truly terrible.” Faced with talentless ruin, O’Doherty turned to his alternatives – telemarketing and comedy. Thank Smeg he chose to pursue the latter. In 1998 he kicked off his standup career with his first open spot at the now-defunct Norseman Comedy Club in Dublin’s unfortunate Temple Bar district. Then in 1999, he took on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the first time, and won the Channel 4 So You Think You’re Funny? competition. His first “proper show” was The Story Of The Boy Who Saved Comedy which was performed at the Dublin and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, and nominated for the Perrier Best Newcomer award. The premise was a long-winded narrative about a boy searching to find jokes to put in his Christmas crackers. “That probably should have been a children’s book rather than a show for grown-ups,” he recalls. “Some nights it really worked. Other nights it absolutely tanked. Once, during the Edinburgh run the entire audience of five people, all ticket winners, walked out!” But he stuck at it and returned to Edinburgh with a new show, as well as hooking up with the Flight of the Conchords and other comedians who spurred him on. Since then he’s travelled to festivals in Melbourne, Montreal, New York, Kilkenny and Edinburgh. O’Doherty’s latest show only has three jokes: “What did Jackie Chan Say?”, “Crème Bruce Lee”, and another undisclosed little number that he says we’ll have to come along to see. While the remainder of the night doesn’t include any other “jokes” in a traditional punch line format, audiences have still been laughing so hard they almost split their sides.

AnnaH MAC

And despite the way-too-graphic descriptions of playing computer games in his tighty-whities and being unable to venture outside, his offbeat perspective on life and somewhat unconventional stories of hope should leave you cheerful. “Hopefully they’ll be more than five in the audience,” he says, “so if someone walks out, it won’t look so bad!” WRITTEN BY TIM Gruar

As she gets ready to embark on her first nationwide tour, just a brief look at her laundry list of accomplishments demonstrates that she has quite the talent for understatement – amongst other things. Growing up outside Invercargill, music and performance were key parts of her life from an early age. “My parents are very supportive and very driven, and we used to play in all these competitions and sing in bars across the country. So I guess I’ve just always loved doing it.” Fast forward a few years, and a future in the music industry didn’t seem like such a far-fetched idea to the talented teenager. “I never really thought of it as a career until I won the Play It Strange songwriting competition at 15. That was the moment when I thought, ‘Oh shit, I could probably do this and survive.’” Throw in a trip to Nashville on a scholarship, where she got to learn from the some of the best session musicians and producers on the country music scene, and Mac was ready to uproot and settle in Auckland where she promptly scored a four-album deal with Sony BMG. Nowadays her music is fast gaining traction with audiences around the country; current single ‘Girl In Stilettos’ has spent 23 weeks in the NZ top 40 (and is still currently at number two in the charts), something that still comes as a bit of a shock. “It’s definitely a big surprise,” she says with a laugh. “But it’s also very exciting because I guess I know that people are listening to the songs and really enjoying the music.” Late last year Mac released her debut album Little Stranger to glowing reviews, and is now about to kick off a nationwide tour in support of the album, starting at Auckland Academy Cinemas on April 20. So what can fans expect from her forthcoming shows? “I’m really looking forward to playing some of the new songs as well, just to sort of see how they go with the audience. And really just connecting with fans all over the country ‘cause I haven’t done that yet.” It has indeed been a pretty amazing ride so far for Annah Mac, with more sure to come. a jersey sure thing The story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons is one for all ages, according to a Saturday survey.

I’m slightly embarrassed to say that I’m really looking forward to seeing Jersey Boys. I shouldn’t be, considering my uncle says musicals are for divorcees and gay dudes. Luckily I don’t take his word as gospel a lot of the time. When I tell my friends that I’m excited to see the show, the girls are all for it and one in five guys agrees with me. I have no idea what it is about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons that gives me such a theatre boner, but it does, and I’m for it. The weird thing is talking to my Nana about it. See, years ago I went to see Menopause! The Musical with her and a buddy of mine, and it was great. She felt all cool that she got to go to see it with her grandson and his friend, and me and my mate felt like we really learned something. We knew all about “the change”. Aside from the great life lessons I learned about menopause, I discovered that my Nana has a lot of good taste when it comes to musicals. Cue a couple of weeks ago when she said that she would be going to Jersey Boys. I’d heard about the show and its successful run on Broadway. Already being a bit of a fan of Frankie Valli and his teenage love songs, I had a good yarn with Nana about what to expect from the show. She said that her friends Muriel, Shirley, Sandy, Betty and the rest of the retirement home were all over the moon about reliving their youth vicariously through this show. It started to dawn on me that the only people that were as excited as I was for Jersey Boys were all over 70 and had the names to prove it. Being the self-conscious pud that I am, I thought it would be worth asking around my own age bracket to see who, hypothetically, would be keen to see Jersey Boys with me. Problem number one was that people thought I was asking them on a date. First of all – I would not ask you out to a musical on a first date. That’s a rookie mistake. First date is coffee, not taking you to a massive theatre production where love songs

are playing. Problem number two was that I was already asking my friends who know that I love 1960s love songs. They poked fun at my clichés and patronised me as only my good friends can. Problem number three was that, after asking around, people asked me what songs Frankie Valli sang. After listing off some of the big ones (‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’, ‘Who Loves You’, ‘Oh What A Night’), I realised that maybe I wasn’t as big a fan as I originally thought. The Four Seasons were one of those bands that had a plethora of songs that you know, but don’t know that it’s actually them singing. Being the ‘60s it was covers galore, so you never knew who actually sang what song first. Luckily I did this impromptu survey on a sunny Saturday afternoon. You know what that means? YouTube party! My motley crew of wannabe revivalists went through song after song, dancing around in my flatmate’s bedroom listening to songs we had no idea that Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons originally sang. The endorphins were flowing and the Saturday afternoon cocktails were spilling. It didn’t matter. My flatmate is a big girl. She doesn’t cry. All of this is a very roundabout way of saying that I managed to remove the thought that Jersey Boys was only for grannies out of my mind. I’m not saying that I don’t want to go and see it with my Nana, but going to the Civic with a bunch of drapes to see this surprisingly swinging sensation of pop hit after pop hit that actually has an award-winning story accompanying each and every song is an enticing idea. Jersey Boys swept the Tonys back in 2006 for good reason, I’m sure. The hard part of seeing it live is going to be not standing up, clapping and singing along. Although if my Nana did that, I figure people would think she’s as cool as I do. Written by Pudley Stenson

Shit worth listening to

album reviews The Black Seeds Dust and Dirt llll

Wellington’s The Black Seeds are one of the best, long serving reggae-funk-fusion collectives in the country. Their conscious lyrics and modern grooves reflect a soulful ambiance. A move from Newtown’s Surgery to their own space in Mt Cook has brought some new inspirations. There’s still a few staple dance hall numbers, notably ‘Settle Down’, ‘Rusted Story’ and title track ‘Dust And Dirt’, but it’s numbers like the down-tempo leanings of ‘Out Of Light’, with its more subdued undertow and psychedelic edge, that made me sit up and take notice. Also grabbing attention are

funky lounge tunes such as single ‘Pippy Pip’, which is downright infectious. And finally worth noting are soul-tappers ‘Gabriel’s Strut Club’ and ‘Loose Cartilage’. As with all their releases, the story on wax is only half the tale – I’d thoroughly recommend catching them live when they tour next month to get the full picture. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

With mesmerising vocals and a dramatic piano accompaniment, it’s no wonder that Birdy has taken the world by storm with her new self–titled debut album. The fifteen-year-old British singer/ songwriter has released a beautifully thought out album composed mainly of carefully chosen covers by pop/indie artists such as The National, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, The XX and even our very own The Naked And Famous. This young talent performs a famous list of songs in a unique way, conveying emotions and passion though her soul-penetrating voice and creating a credible new way of delivering the meaning of these songs to the listeners. With a beautiful choice of piano as her main companion she sets an elegant mood and amazes the listener with her inspiring vocals – a combination that is surely to send shivers down anyone’s spine.

Last year Nick Cave’s garage rock alter ego Grinderman called it a day after two brilliantly filthy albums. Grinderman 2 RMX is the cherry on the top, a goodbye present from Grinderman and an eclectic group of collaborators and remixers to help soften the blow. Things start exceptionally well with ‘Super Heathen Child’, a version of the album’s lead single featuring King Crimson guitar-god Robert Fripp. Triphoppers UNKLE make ‘Hyper Worm Tamer’ the best James Bond theme never made. A Place To Bury Strangers, Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Matt Berninger (The National) and many more try their hand at mutating Cave and co.’s primal rock assault into something new with mixed results. Far from essential, but a fun diversion for fans of the band or guest artists.

Given the underlying themes, Madge is clearly working through some Guy Ritchie break up issues here. Or something. “If I see that bitch in hell/I want to see him die,” she deadpans in ‘Gang Bang’ – so mature. Collaborations with brats like Nicki Minaj on ‘I Don’t Give A’ do nothing to build any credibility, either. But while she may’ve taken a scalpel to revenge, religion and dance music, MDNA is really just a scattergun blast through latter day Madonna. And she’s reunited with Ray Of Light producer William Orbit for cuts like ‘I’m A Sinner’ with its Middle Eastern vocals and electropsychedelia. ‘Love Spent’ is a broody ‘80s club tune, straight from the ‘Holiday’ era. This might be the most visceral and most listenable stuff she’s done for a while but it certainly isn’t the most original or inspired. For a pioneer like Madonna, has the palette dried up?

Lee Fields is amongst the last of the original soul singers, and his four decades of experience have culminated in the release of his latest album Faithful Man. It’s an album that sounds as though it could have been made in the early ‘70s when soul was huge and James Brown was king. And that’s not a bad thing. Lee Fields sings with real passion and the emotion can be heard in his voice on every one of these 10 tracks. This is honest music, set apart from most of the manufactured soul and r’n’b we hear nowadays. His band, The Expressions, play their role well, knowing exactly when to let Fields’ voice be the star and when to fill the spaces with their own rich sound; a sound full of strings and lush melody, without ever being in your face. This is soul the way it should be.

on screen THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS FILM llll

Second only to Pixar in the consistent quality stakes, Aardman’s latest animated adventure is another entertaining romp for the whole family. From the cartography-inspired credits to the coin-op canons, Pirates’ attention to detail and determination to give the audience a rollicking good time

is worthy of acclaim. The company’s distinctive British and absurdist humour abounds with a pirate-hating Queen Victoria, the Elephant Man and Charles Darwin (who believes the main purpose of airships is for looking down ladies’ tops) all coming in for a satiric skewering, while the action never lets up, with

inventive fights (often involving fish and crustaceans as weapons) seguing into pyrotechnic backed bouts of piracy (the explosive properties of baking soda and vinegar are a recurring theme). Amongst a terrific cast of voice actors, Grant’s vain Pirate Captain (the current holder of the award for best anecdote about a squid) stands out, although he is almost upstaged by a monkey with cue cards. Aardman’s seamless visuals are matched by one of the most spoton soundtracks of the year, with everyone from The Clash to The Flight of the Conchords and Strauss to Supergrass featuring. I enjoy spectacle, and this film has plenty of it. What it doesn’t have is a decent plot, original characterisation or much in the way of flair. But yeah, lots of spectacle. Actor Peter Berg made a promising directorial debut with 1998’s Very Bad Things, but the quality of his movies has varied wildly since then (from Hancock to Friday Night Lights to The Kingdom). He doesn’t inject Battleship with much personality, but he shoots the action with a clarity I appreciate. Points of difference include gargantuan floating alien ships that splash about in the water like giant distressed stingrays; a whole lot of large scale ship action and a Tongan Kiwi (John Tui) as the fourth male lead.

ever”, most entertaining would be more accurate. This is a film likely to be most appreciated by those who think that the discovery of a dodo “makes electricity look like a load of crap”.

Pop star Rihanna doesn’t embarrass herself in her first big film role and lead Taylor Kitcsh proves serviceably generic, but not offensively so. Liam Neeson is in about four scenes, while local lad Tui is great as the resident tough guy. The audience I saw this film with couldn’t contain their pompous scoffing, especially during the more gung-ho military scenes, but the fourteen-yearold in me enjoyed what he saw. If you make sure your palette is prepared for a giant steaming pile of melted cheese, you might just enjoy yourself. WRITTEN BY DOMINIC CORRY, FLICKS.CO.NZ

Joining Anonymous and Inglourious Basterds in the yeah-nah of historical fiction is this disappointingly tame snapshot of Butch Cassidy’s hypothetical older years. Blackthorn could have been a badass character piece of True Grit proportions. Instead, it’s nothing more than a passable Western that makes you long for something memorable. The first half drags its feet trying to develop Butch’s relationship with his underwritten Spaniard sidekick. The partnership leaves a lot to be desired, with the pair never building a convincing camaraderie. Despite some nifty action set pieces and a gutpunching plot-turn later on, the film fails to recover from that set-

back. The fault cannot be placed on Sam Shepard, whose brilliant portrayal of the aged bandit finds the balance between shrewdness and ruthlessness. Flashbacks are littered throughout, though they serve little purpose and don’t affect the overall storyline. It’s as if the filmmakers needed to extend the movie’s length, choosing to awkwardly shoehorn a crashcourse on Butch Cassidy. One is left feeling annoyed that the drop-dead gorgeous cinematography and Shepard’s excellent performance are dumped on a sluggishly paced Western that’s not nearly as interesting as it should be.
