27/07 The Grass Is Greener

The 2012 Splendour In The Grass line-up has been announced and tickets go on sale this Friday 27 April through moshtix.com.au. It’s an impressive bill (as always), so we’ll just name a few highlights: Jack White, Bloc Party, Smashing Pumpkins, At The Drive-In, The Shins, The Kooks, Gossip, Dirty Three, Lana Del Rey, Azealia Banks, Tame Impala, Explosions In The Sky, Ladyhawke, The Afghan Whigs, Wolfmother, Kimbra and plenty more. Splendour In The Grass runs from Friday 27 July to Sunday 29 July at Byron Bay’s Belongil Fields.
29/07 Red Head Ed

The firey-haired singer who found fame with his 2011 release + will play at Auckland’s ASB Theatre on Sunday 29 July as part of his Australasian tour. Presale tickets are on sale now for Frontier Touring members through frontiertouring.com, and general tickets go on sale Monday 30 April through BuyTickets.

One of the biggest and often changing names in ska, The English Beat AKA The Beat (and once or twice also called The Special Beat) have announced their first New Zealand show. Auckland will host the current incarnation of The English Beat at the Powerstation on Thursday 23 August. If there were any people out there who were delightfully surprised by The Specials show a few weeks ago, this one will be right up your alley.

It was big news for Kiwis and Aussies alike when Kimbra and Gotye’s single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ reached number one on the Billboard charts in the US following the song’s top spot on the iTunes chart in America as well. Gotye’s effort to reach the top spot sees him join the likes of other Ausies Men At Work, INXS and Savage Garden, while the only other notable Kiwi in recent years who has been at number one is OMC for ‘How Bizarre’. This joint Gotye and Kimbra news follows the song being performed on the hit television show Glee. A compilation of Blur songs will be released in late July through Parlophone. The careerretrospective box set 21 (named after the 21 years since Blur’s debut album Leisure) has been personally compiled by the band. All seven studio albums have been collated as well as over five hours of unreleased material and rarities. The box set will also feature three DVDs, a limited edition 7” and a collector’s edition book, as well as a digital download code for the bonus material. The LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up And Play The Hits has been picked up by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch AKA Adrock’s distribution
company Oscilloscope Laboratories. The film documents the last few days of James Murphy’s iconic music project and the last show at Madison Square Gardens. Shut Up And The Play The Hits will US theatres over their summer, and we’ve got fingers crossed that it will make it here for the Film Festival. Daniel Johnston has announced that he’ll be releasing new LP Space Ducks: Soundtrack following his comic book Space Ducks: An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness and the iPad video game app that went with it. The soundtrack, consisting of 12 tracks, features Johnston himself and has guest appearances from Eleanor Friedberger, Fruit Bats, Lavender Diamond, Deer Tick and our own Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Sad news came last week that Levon Helm, drummer for The Band, passed away on Friday (NZ time) at 71 from throat cancer which the musician has been fighting since 1998. Helm, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, won three Grammy Awards in his time and made a return to singing in 2004 when he hosted the series of Midnight Ramble concerts.
Pac From The Dead So the innernets went shit crazy last week when Tupac made his debut performing live from the afterlife for crowds at Coachella. It was super nice of him to take time out of his busy schedule haunting recording studios and playing Cranium with Buddy Holly, Elvis and Kurt Cobain to come all the way back to Earth for a live show with Nate Dogg, Dre and Snoop. A couple of thoughts about the performance though: - Years ago a hologram was just when a drug dealer ripped you off. - Whoever organised the hit on Tupac should get their money back. - Wouldn’t bullets go right through a hologram? - It might be easier to call this version TuPointOhPac. What does this hologram technology mean for the future of live performance? Could Tupac and Nate Dogg be the next members of Gorillaz? Will we end up seeing a spoken word set from Shakespeare at the local Irish pub? Will Jimi Hendrix play with Michaels both Hutchence and Jackson in a stadium rock arena? Could this type of performance become the norm or will it remain a gimmick (albeit an impressive one)? Either way, Coachella managed to stay trending in Twitter for quite some time, so whatever the plan was it probably worked.

FU MANCHU
Dimmer Switch It Off Shayne Carter announced that Dimmer will be performing their final two shows next month after some 15 years. The two farewell gigs will be held at The Kings Arms in Auckland on Thursday 24 May and at Bodega in Wellington on Saturday 26 May with Beastwars holding the support reins on both nights. Carter said that key members are heading overseas and his recent string of shows under his own name accompanied with other factors made it feel right that the band should come to a natural dissolution. This won’t be the end of the Kiwi music icon’s career – there are more projects in the works including an evolution of the Last Train To Brockville shows and a new album. The send-offs will feature Gary Sullivan, James Duncan and Vaughan Williams. Tickets are available through Under The Radar.
UMO Take Taite Unknown Mortal Orchestra have claimed the muchcoveted Taite Music Prize for 2012 with their self-titled debut album. The brainchild of former Mint Chick Ruban Nielson, UMO skyped their way through the awards last week as the band members are based in Oregon in the US. “Thank you so much for this award... It makes me feel very appreciated and I promise to use the money wisely!” He couldn’t suppress a giggle, but went on to say, “I’ll spend it on health insurance and making more music.” UMO beat out worthy contenders Beastwars, Tiny Ruins, She’s So Rad, Andrew Keoghan, David Dallas, and The Bats for the $10,000 prize in honour of renowned Kiwi music journalist Dylan Taite.

WEDNESDAY 25
THURSDAY 26 The Avengers
A Dangerous Method
General Release
Selected Cinemas
For some crazy reason, New Zealand is one of the first countries in the world to get the general release of The Avengers. How great is that? You get to go to see Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury fight gods, aliens and monsters. Fanboys and fangirls assemble.
Chicks dig handsome and chicks dig intelligence. So get Viggo Mortensen in a room with Michael Fassbender playing a couple of babe geniuses and watch the swooning happen. This flick looks at the intense relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud which gives birth to psychoanalysis. Just the synopsis alone sounds hot.
Anzac Day
The Way
Multiple Venues
Selected Cinemas
Your grandparents went through harder times than you. Yeah, the world’s in disarray right now, but there’s no actual war that you’re being drafted into. So get up early, go to the museum/park/wherever and see the dawn while paying your respects. Then you can go back home and sleep again.
A film written, directed by and starring Emilio Estevez? There’s got to be that fan of ‘80s and ‘90s films inside you that wants to see this. Fun fact – Martin Sheen (Emilio’s daddy) changed his name from Ramon Estevez. Emilio didn’t to avoid accusations of nepotism. But Charlie Sheen took his dad’s fake name.
Sol Night
The Most Fun You Can Have Dying
Chapel Bar & Bistro
Selected Cinemas
George FM DJ Thane Kirby mixes things up at Chapel on Ponsonby Road this Anzac Day doing his Sunday Session on a Wednesday. Go figure. Chapel’s Anzac celebrations (where there will be no public holiday surcharge) include $20 for a bucket of four Sol beers or $20 for a pizza, a Sol and a shot of Jager.
If you only had a few months left to live, you’d totally want to use the money you’d “borrowed” to jet off overseas, see some sights, get irresponsible and literally live like you may die tomorrow. But then you’d meet some hot French girl and it would get weird. Cue this New Zealand film.
Fabulous / Arabia
Annah Mac
San Fran Bath House
CPSA 7.30pm, $26-30, eventfinder.co.nz
If you’re into sharply-dressed singers with loveable smiles and voices that could send angels to sleep, then there’s something for you at San Fran Bath House tonight. Mike Fabulous and Lawrence Arabia reunite for a show in the capital, and you’ll probably develop a crush on them.
Annah Mac is quickly finding her footing musically, and people are getting behind her. Someone even called her the new Bic Runga. The impressive Kiwi songstress will be wowing crowds in Christchurch this week on Thursday before heading to the Civic Theatre in Invercargill on Friday and Sammy’s in Dunedin on Saturday.

Big Daddy is such a perfect blues name. You couldn’t have “Father Rabbit Jenkins” or “Uncle Tommy’s Pyjamas” as a blues name. The Big Daddy Wilson Trio know that. And they know blues. Even though they’re a smiley bunch.
Old Fashioned Wednesdays at Barrio is loads of fun. They have board games like Scrabble, some weird game called Fun With Felts where you feel like you’re a five-year-old, and cards. And jazz. And cheap whiskey.

Any time a dude makes a joke about periods or going through menopause, chicks get angry. Deservedly so. It’s no laughing matter. Unless you’re making a comedy musical about it. Then you can laugh until your heart bleeds. Or stops bleeding.
Ahead of the Fu Manchu shows in Wellington and Auckland, San Franciscan metallers Black Cobra will be playing one headline show in Auckland with support from Imploder (who will look familiar if you’re a Datsuns fan) and Arc of Ascent.

IDIOTS OF ANTS Edinburgh Comedy Award 2009 nominees and 2010 Chortle Award winners Idiots Of Ants bring their blend of fast-paced sketch comedy to New Zealand for the first time. IRENE PINK AND JUSTINE SMITH IN THE PITCH It’s The Muppets meets two of the most popular ladies in the New Zealand comedy circuit. JEREMY ELWOOD’S TIME BOMB This is compelling, intelligent and thoughtprovoking comedy at its best. With a few dick jokes. Kind of like if Fraser and Niles got drunk and started zinging each other. You’ll know Jeremy’s face from 7 Days, his voice from The Panel on Radio New Zealand National, his wit from his blog Political Animal and his name from being one of the biggest comedians in the country. Yeah, that Jeremy Elwood. BARRY MORGAN’S WORLD OF ORGANS
THE AXIS OF AWESOME
Being Australia’s “celebrity organ salesman” is a weird claim to fame. But those Aussies are weird, so Barry Morgan can be as weird as he wants. Here’s your chance to see the organ used in an all new way. Comically and Australian-ly. Imagine if the banjo kid from Deliverance was an organ salesman but less… redneck-ey.
Get a bunch of Australians together in a band and give them explosions, dancing girls, bears riding tricycles, volcanoes and you’re going to get something like This Is Spinal Tap! Meets The Castle. Which, to be fair, does sound pretty great. Which would explain why The Axis Of Awesome has sold out a the Edinburgh Festival four times.
Mon 07 May – Sat 12 May, 9pm Rangatira at Q, 305 Queen St, Auckland $30 09 309 9771 or qtheatre.co.nz

GUY WILLIAMS – ON THE VERGE OF NOTHING Guy Williams is one of the best selfdeprecating comedians in the New Zealand comedy scene. As a nation of tall poppy syndrome haters, it’s nice that some guy can rip shit into himself and seem really likeable. This Billy T nominee may very well be the worst act at the festival if his opinion is anything to go by. And he seems awesome. Despite claims that he couldn’t have made this album – the first under the long shadow of his own name – until now, Jack White’s ‘debut’ sounds a lot like what has come before. Obviously this is a very good thing. Between his various bands and a multitude of collaborations ranging from excellent (Loretta Lynn), to OK (Alicia Keys), to WTF territory (Insane Clown Posse?!), it’s no secret Jack has always been a very busy boy. Blunderbuss is even released on his own label, Third Man Records, which he runs out of his adopted home of Nashville. The influence of that city on this album should not be understated; there’s little of the Detroit garage-rock-rawness of his early work, indeed Get Behind Me Satan is probably the earliest reference point here (notably the acoustic guitar/piano combo evident on ‘Hypocritical Kiss’), while ‘Weep Themselves To Sleep’ sounds like an Icky Thump outtake crossed with the spaghetti-western sounds heard on The Raconteurs’ narrative-driven ‘Carolina Drama’. You’ve probably already heard the excellent first single ‘Love Interruption’ which hovers just under the three-minute mark, a trick that goes back via The Pixies all the way to Buddy Holly – just because you’re onto a good thing doesn’t mean you should outstay your welcome. ‘On and On and On’ and the title track both utilise pedal steel guitar to great effect, and ‘Take Me With You When You Go’ continues a long tradition of amazing closing tracks on White’s albums, this time combining Beach Boys-esque harmonies with fiddle before unleashing a Led Zep-like riff (see It Might Get Loud for Jack in full-flight Jimmy Page fanboy mode). It’s not all amazing; ‘Freedom at 21’ is disjointed and fussy (the vaguely hip-hop beat was better used by The Dead Weather on ‘Old Mary’), and ‘Trash Tongue Talker’ is an average bar room hoedown. Still, the accolades and hyperbole sure to greet Blunderbuss are largely warranted, though Jack White has been best served by having a foil – Brendan Benson, Alison Mosshart, and Meg – and there’s a slight sense that although he’s doing just fine on his own, a little something is missing. WRITTEN BY CHRIS POLE ALBUM OUT NOW: JACK WHITE - BLUNDERBUSS
Though the leaves may be falling and daylight savings is done, it’s not all doom and gloom on the horizon. Cooler nights are the perfect excuse to head out for some live music and dDub, with their infectious roots reggae explosion, could be just the ticket. I mean, why wouldn’t you bask in the warmth of a good crowd, sip a mulled wine or two, and let the music of one of Aotearoa’s most well-loved bands warm the cockles of your heart? Speaking to dDub’s accomplished lead singer/guitarist Derek Browne, there’s no doubt he’s excited to be heating things up. “It’ll be great to be on the road and out playing,” Browne enthuses, “and we’re so looking forward to Christchurch. Wanna get down there and bring some love to the city!” The band hasn’t toured in almost two years, but they certainly haven’t been idle during that time. As well as playing festivals and one-off shows intermittently, they have been concentrating on their sound; refining and defining. Bringing in an additional horn player means they now boast a three-piece brass section, which Browne describes as sounding “amazing!” He goes on to add, “The sound is quite tight now and the best it’s ever been,” sounding suspiciously like a very proud dad. Professing to a love of ‘70s and‘80s music, Browne goes on to explain the appeal. “It’s the realness of the music back then, where people didn’t rely on anything but connection to the song.” He also admits he’s not a fan of mass production, but does concede that there is some great modern music, with “longevity and quality song-writing”. These personal preferences have shaped and influenced dDub to some degree, as the band exhibit very little studio trickery in their recordings, and even less electronic influence in their live performances. Browne’s influence is also evident via his songwriting sensibilities, with him humbly asserting, “I’m not a flash guitar player, songwriting is my strength.” As the band continue to work on new material – spending time with engineer/producer Reti Hedley (Knights Of The Dub Table) at his studio at Waiuku – they have by no means forgotten who their fans are. Because although the current tour to Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch is a good chance to road test new tracks, it’ll first and foremost be about delivering a dynamic live show and groove-laden good times to their people.

Dallas Green of City And Colour is one of a special breed of singer-songwriters, the genuine and bravely oh-so-honest kind. With personal soul-baring lyrics he imparts intimate tales of his own insecurities, his soothing crystalline voice detailing the trials and tribulations of day to day life. Green’s approach to songwriting sees him tackling the melody first, and then writing lines of lyrics around it. His “go-to instrument” for melody-making is the guitar – not surprisingly – and he will occasionally sit at the piano. But what about those poignant and powerful lyrics – do the words just flow freely as required? Despite the luxury of ample personal experience to draw upon, the humble Green is a bit of a perfectionist. With most songs requiring rewrite after rewrite, he admits it takes a long time for him to be satisfied with a song, “Though sometimes a song will sort of put itself together.” While said songs are distinctly his, as a listener it is all too easy to make Green’s words your own – which is certainly intentional on his part. “As much as I am writing about myself I try to write in a relatable fashion, so anyone can draw on the words. People don’t have to know me or know what I’ve been through.” Green may still be better known to some as guitarist and vocalist of hardcore band Alexisonfire, but City And Colour is no longer a new alias for the Juno (Canada’s Grammys equivalent) Awardwinning Canadian. And in case you were wondering, the cleverly eponymous moniker comes from his own name: Dallas, a city, and Green, a colour. June 2011 saw the release of third studio album Little Hell, and a departure from Green’s predominantly acoustically-driven origins. Couched in mystery, intimacy and quietness, Little Hell not only shows progression stylistically, it is also the first of City And Colour’s albums to have been recorded to tape. Adding richness and depth to the sound, Green nevertheless found the project challenging in many aspects. “When things went wrong it wasn’t just a matter of pushing delete and creating a new file on the computer,” he recalls. This coming weekend will see Green play Auckland’s Town Hall, and marks City And Colour’s first visit to our fair shores. The live band will be made up of friends and fellow Canadian musicians; Dylan Green on drums, Scott Remila on bass guitar, Aaron Goldstein playing pedal steel and Afie Jurvanen on guitar. With Little Hell and other notable successes under their collective belt, City And Colour’s debut Auckland performance promises to be a good one. Fu Manchu frontman Scott Hill’s musical fire was originally lit by a cassette recording of a live Black Flag gig in December of 1980. “That was it,” he recalls. “[I] put all my Kiss, Deep Purple, Ted Nugent and Sabbath records in the back of my closet. I started buying every punk/hardcore record I could find!” Five years later he helped form hardcore punk band Virulence. Two years on from that, following a line-up change, the band switched their name to Fu Manchu. From there on out they began to build a name for themselves. Now with their own label Dojo and 10 studio albums under their belt, they are heading full force into independent releasing. The label’s current main mission is to re-issue older out-of-print Fu Manchu records, with the likes of Eatin’ Dust, Daredevil, No One Rides For Free, Start The Machine, In Search Of…, and The Action Is Go on the cards. The future, however, holds a lot more – after this round of New Zealand and Australian shows, the band are heading back home to write new songs for a new album. Hill is hopeful the band will have the writing wrapped sooner rather than later so they can record the new material towards the end of the year, with a view to release the album in 2013. In the midst of all that though, the band is off to Europe for four weeks playing The Action is Go from start to finish. Hill maintains that after years of touring, there isn’t one particular country that has the most hardcore fans. “Everywhere has great fans. I can’t think of anywhere having better fans than somewhere else. Canada does get very rowdy though.” Although Hill’s dreams of an ideal headline tour, which included Black Flag, Bl’ast, Minor Threat, Void and SSD, can’t quite be filled, the most memorable crowed is certainly up for grabs on April 28th at Auckland’s Studio. album reviews Dictaphone Blues Beneath The Crystal Palace llll
Unabashedly catchy and fun, the sophomore effort from Dictaphone Blues is sure to get feet on the dance floor around the country. From the opening riffs of ‘Radio Heart’, the Aucklandbased trio make no attempt to hide their obvious love of ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s pop tunes; they display it proudly, and to great effect. Smashing all these influences together, songwriter Edward Castelow manages to create a toe-tapping blend of infectious pop-rock. ‘What Happened To Our Love?’ is a particular highlight; torn from the pages of Motown, it slowly descends
Shinedown
Snakes Of Iron
ALBUM OF THE WEEK into a psychedelic frenzy in its second half. And ‘Friends Need Friends’, a charming Beatles homage, helps balance out the heavier jam-out tracks like ‘Shake A Leg’. The talented rhythm section of Robert Collins and Myles Allpress help give this album an edgy groove that will no doubt translate well into the live domain. Beneath The Crystal Palace is young, fun and sure to get stuck in your head. WRITTEN BY CLOVIS MCEVOY

There is no stopping Shinedown. The Sound of Madness cemented their power as a rock band with multiple chart hits, but the newly released Amaryllis is in a league of its own. The album explodes open with ‘Adrenaline’ and then the first single ‘Bully’ rips your face off with tremendous riffs, heavy bass and pounding drums. With the most uplifting and encouraging lyrics frontman Brent Smith has ever written, this track makes you feel as though you can take on an army and is certainly the album’s anthem. ‘Nowhere Kids’ isn’t a song that I would take for a Shinedown track; the format and feel are noticeably different from others on the album, but the speed of Smith’s chorus vocals and lyrics ensure it works brilliantly. ‘I’ll Follow You’ is the closest you’ll get to a Shinedown ballad – it’s perfectly balanced in every aspect.
With their chaotic guitar riffs and skilled musical composition, Snakes of Iron highlight the New Zealand punk rock scene and bring a whole new level of mad grunge sound to the public. The Auckland-based band formed in early 2008 and includes former members of False Start, Los Muertos, The Have and others. This variety of musical backgrounds seems to have helped create a unique and powerful sound on their self-titled debut EP, and their immense talent in both heavy instrumental composition and vocals will surely instantly thrill fans into mindless thrashing about. Snakes Of Iron’s success and underground image has led them to tour with famous bands such as Blessthefall, Cancer Bats, Saosin and Poison The Well, where they were praised for their energetic performances on stage and crowd moving rhythms.
If you’ve never been introduced to Miss James (shame on you) then here’s your chance. Prior her death in January this year James gathered numerous awards, prompted critical acclaim, amassed an adoring fan base, and exerted an influence over modern music that is undisputed. Trouble is, she’s already got a truckload of “best of” releases sitting in her back catalogue. This version is a typical taster, with hits like ‘At Last’ and ‘I Just Want To Make Love To You’, a sprinkling of covers, but most importantly, it shows off the range of genres that she melded during a lifetime in music (blues, jazz, gospel, soul, rockabilly, r’n’b). Her ability to jump from one to the other was a talent that few could reproduce so easily. And let’s not forget that voice. From sweet and supple to rage-ina-cage ferocity, when James opened her mouth you had no choice but to listen.

A+E is the eighth album from Graham Coxon, but is destined to be compared with not only the offerings of his on-againoff-again band, but also the auxiliary exploits of Blur frontman Damon Albarn. That’s a shame, as this solo effort is worth considering on its own numerous merits. With Blur back on hiatus after their brief reunion, Coxon has channelled his creative outpourings into the best album he has forged under his own name. ‘Seven Naked Valleys’ riffs on the bass motif of Wilco’s ‘Can’t Stand It’, while processed beats on ‘City Hall’ and motorik stylings on ‘What’ll It Take’ offer diversity. The swirling organs on ‘Bah Singer’ come on like a Wooden Shjips pastiche, and the lengthy ‘Knife In The Cast’ resembles the noisier, experimental edge of early Flying Nun than anything to do with Britpop. Only complaint is the clumsy placement of ‘Ooh, Yeh Yeh’ at the end.

A DANGEROUS METHOD
Even for an adaptation of a play called The Talking Cure, the characters in David Cronenberg’s latest are endlessly intellectualising. At one point Freud (Mortensen) asks his protégé Jung (Fassbender) if he realises they’ve been chatting for 13 hours. The audience won’t be so surprised. It’s not that the topics in question – the founding principles of psychology, desire vs. repression, whether Jung should really be shagging his patient (Knightley) – don’t merit the screen-time. It’s just that this stiff prestige picture could be a radio play and all you’d miss is Keira making ugly in the hope of an Oscar. For all the psychologising we only get rudimentary portraits of Jung and Freud as men,
has made five themes that have further narrowed down the best-of criteria: Best Travel Episode; Homer At Work; The Kids Are In Trouble; Best Guest Star Episode and Citizen of Springfield. It’s been an up and down 23 years that audiences have spent with The Simpsons. Nowadays it’s all the rage to say “I only like the first eight seasons” or “any episode that’s been made in the past 5/10/15 years is shit”. Whatever your era of taste may lay in, you’ve got to admit that 500 episodes is impressive. For more info go to four.co.nz.
while Knightley’s histrionic performance verges on embarrassing. As a child, her character, we learn, liked to sit on one foot, simultaneously withholding and releasing her excrement. Somehow her facial expressions suggest this exact movement throughout. It’s a pity because there are some juicy Cronenbergian concepts here – how “destructive forces can also be creative ones” (see Shivers, The Fly, The Dead Zone); how “not to repress yourself is to release all kinds of dangerous forces” (Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Crash). But they’re endlessly analysed rather than dramatised, and when lined up against the director’s earlier, noholds-barred efforts, A Dangerous Method only talks the talk. WRITTEN BY MATT GLASBY, FLICKS.CO.NZ
A Polanski comedy seems like an oxymoron, but great things are bound to happen when you give the director worthy material, regardless of genre. Almost immediately we’re given a sense that neither one of these characters are the flawless human beings their facades suggest, with the following 79 minutes dedicated to proving that. Tensions burn slowly between the incompatible couples (as well as the respective spouses) as they slowly chip away at each other’s tolerance. One by one, they reach a breaking point and, before they can reach a wholesome moment of mitigated relief, something else furthers the chaos. The gradual collapse from their built-up politeness-driven personas to their broken, honest selves is extremely well-done and
immensely satisfying to watch. The cast are on their A-game. Winslet displays projectile levels of stress (you’ll know what I mean) while Waltz effortlessly triggers an apathetic gaze that says “I really don’t give a crap about your stupid opinions.” Jodie Foster pulls out a career best since The Silence of the Lambs, playing a self-indulgent, attention-seeking super-liberal to such irritating perfection that you want to high-five her in both the hand and the face. The ending cuts off abruptly, making you wonder where the last five minutes of the film went. It’s an intrusive airbag to a delightfully uncivilised car-crash of a meeting, but that momentary feeling of emptiness subsides pretty quickly. WRITTEN BY LIAM MAGUREN, FLICKS.CO.NZ

Marvel’s The Avengers FILM llll
First things first: Let’s get this straight. So far, The Avengers is essentially the Holy Grail of superhero flicks for our generation. Anything that DC’s churned out without the word “Batman” in it has been a pathetic flop (even Temuera Morrison couldn’t save Green Lantern). With this new offering, Marvel’s both brought their A-game and left the competition cowering in their wake. Half the fun from watching the Marvel flicks of late
consisted of piecing together the easter eggs, picking up on the subtle nods and solving the post-ending cliff-hangers with glee. From Mjolnir to Cap’s shield, it’s all being leading up to this. And boy, does this one impress. Without actually giving anything away, I can say this much at least: Expect dramatic twists. Expect ridiculous overthe-top explosions. Expect some top-notch badassery and
prepare to be wowed. The acting cast is seamless and well-chosen; even a somewhat surly Mark Ruffalo manages to pull off a decently memorable Bruce Banner. Even though he doesn’t do the Marvel character much justice (Banner’s supposed to be one of the ‘8 Smartest Men’ on Earth), he does paint a strong portrait of a troubled host to the big green guy. All this, despite being arguably the weakest performer on board. From Tony Stark’s remarkably witty quips to Black Widow’s unbelievable, irresistible and lascivious... oh wait, where did my pants go? Where was I? You get the point. Everything from dialogue to visual spectacle has been tremendously well-refined, and I’ll be damned if I didn’t admit that Loki’s army looked convincingly real. It’s like they went above and beyond
to find the most impressive pyrotechnics and adrenalinefilled action, and then went “Hell, let’s chuck in some more for shits and giggles.” All in all, Joss Whedon’s directing made this a sure thing from the get-go. With many a cult masterpiece under his belt (Firefly, anyone?) and a vested interest in the superhero universe, it’s no surprise that the end result was on hell of a tour de force. But really. I can’t say much more than go see it for yourself, and prepare for wave upon wave of nerdgasms crashing through the cinema. Written by Josh Ling
