New blues Ohio favourites Black Keys have announced that they will be returning to New Zealand this year. The duo consisting of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have confirmed that they’ll be making their way over in November for two shows; the first in Auckland on Saturday 03 November and the second on Monday 05 November at Wellington’s TSB Bank Arena. After the 2011 hit El Camino fans have been waiting for the go signal. Now that it’s come… well, it’s blues and garage revivalist at its best, so what’s not to be excited about?

Keeping Us Waiting

04/08

The first of the flow-over from Australia’s Splendour In The Grass festival has spilled onto our shores. The Smashing Pumpkins have announced that they’ll make the jump over the ditch in August to play one show in Auckland at The Trusts Stadium on Saturday 04 August. While there are no more acts announced that will be making their way over from the festival there’s always that hope that the likes of Jack White, At The Drive-In, The Shins, Lana Del Rey, Azealia Banks and many of the other draw cards will be heading this way.

Street Chant and The Raw Nerves have been announced to support the one-off Wavves show at The Kings Arms this Thursday 03 May. So one of the best shows in the country this week just got better with an alwaysimpressive appearance from the meanest trio around, and a much-deserved nod to one of the best garage bands around Auckland at the moment. The Raw Nerves don’t play that often (but they are working on a release) so here’s your chance to see them as well as one of the country’s hottest rock names and the brat kings of the beach all in one setting. David Guetta has sold out his Auckland show at Vector Arena on this Thursday 03 May, and so have The Kaiser Chiefs who will be performing their first ever New Zealand show on Thursday 10 May at Auckland’s Powerstation. Keep your eyes peeled on our Twitter and Facebook though, you never know when a giveaway may pop up. President Barrack Obama appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon along with The Roots for a news-style slow jam. That might not make sense, so let’s clarify it – The Roots played a bluesy slow jam and Obama gave some political spoken word over it while Jimmy Fallon cracked a few funnies. Obama’s getting all current affairs Barry White up in this. After the performance, the President literally drops the mic like it’s press time.

Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold has started a Kickstarter page for a proposed film about LOLcats. The Internet – A Blog Cats WTF Universe was developed by brother of Robin and music video director Sean Pecknold, and asks “Why are we here? Who or what is God? Where were you before you were born? What is the impact of technology on our minds and souls? Where does the universe end?... This is a story of a man’s hopeless quest for truth among the cats.” There were a few rumours floating around about whether or not Mickey Avalon would be coming to New Zealand as part of his Australian tour this month. Unfortunately the rapper will not be making his way to the country as he celebrates his latest release Loaded, but organisers say that they would like to come in the future. Mark Foster and Isom Innis of Foster The People fame are working on a new DJ project together. Smims&Belle is the name of the collaboration, and the duo have released their first screwed, mashed and chopped track – yet another remix of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Blue Jeans’. While mixing and mashing any given Lana song seems to be the go-to move for many a DJ/producer out there, this one has a little something different in the way of a verse from Azealia Banks. Check out the song on the Smims&Belle Soundcloud: soundcloud. com/smimsandbelle.

The Beach Boys have released a new single. Yes, those Beach Boys, not some band with the same name. The actual Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks. The summer lovers have reunited for their 50th anniversary and are celebrating by releasing a new studio album (That’s Why God Made The Radio, their 29th studio release which will hit stands in June) as well as a commemorative catalogue. The band will also be touring internationally later this year, but no confirmations have been made for our little slice of paradise.

A new trailer is out for Lawless, the film written and composed by none other than the boss of the bad seeds Nick Cave. Lawless, which premieres soon at the Cannes Film Festival, is an adaptation of The Wettest County in the World, a prohibition-era novel written by Matt Bondurant. The film is directed by John Hillcoat and stars Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain and Gary Oldman. Tommy Marth (saxophonist for The Killers on Sam’s Town and Day & Age and touring member during 2008 and 2009) was found dead at his Las Vegas home last week, and it’s being reported that the musician took his own life.

WEdNESDAY 02 Stephen K Amos

Atmosphere

Skycity Theatre

San Fran Bath House

gig OF THE WEEK

7pm, $40-45, ticketek.co.nz

10pm

Stephen K Amos returns to New Zealand with his new show Laughter Is My Agenda. That’s a good agenda to have. Lots of agendas are often full of malcontent, but this one’s just full of laughter. Stevie K will be making funnies about how being a grown-up is weird and how children are awful. And he’ll be right.

The Whiskey Live The Whiskey

Spinning and chopping their way through electronica, Atmosphere play two shows in the country this weekend. The two MCs will be accompanied by their full live band at both the Wellington performance at the San Fran Bath House and the Auckland show on Thursday 03 May at the Studio on K Road.

Sick Of It All

Anika Moa

The Kings Arms

Dux Live

8pm, $59, undertheradar.co.nz

7pm, $40, ticketmaster.co.nz

The Jordan Luck Band and Ekko Park play on the second night of NZ Music Month at The Whiskey on Ponsonby Road. Ekko Park are one of those bands that have been around for a while, and all of a sudden they’re all BOOM and people are all MAN EKKO PARK IS ALL DENENENENAOWWW and they do air guitar.

The very special one-off show from Sick Of It All and Agnostic Front is at Auckland’s home of live rock this Wednesday. The heavy hitters are making the trip all the way from the Big Apple after 25 years together.

7.30pm, $25, eventfinder.co.nz

Anika Moa is full of awesome. She’s jam-packed full of audible goodness. If she sang opera, people would probably cry during the performance. And she’s got that badass Kiwi girl attitude that makes you swoon and totally crush on her.

Thursday 03 Wavves

Nathan Haines

The Kings Arms

The Imperial 8pm, $40, undertheradar.co.nz

6.30pm, FREE

Nathan Haines is to New Zealand jazz as Kiwi birds are to New Zealand birds. Yeah, there are lots of other similar things out there, but this one is the most famous and hard to come by, so you get all excited when you see one in real life. And your older sister LOVES them.

Stoner brat dudes Wavves are being supported by Street Chant and The Raw Nerves. There are very few reasons to not want to go to this show. Except maybe if you think that one of the dudes from Wavves might throw a beer at you. Which they might. But that could happen at any time in life.

David Guetta

Starbuck

Vector Arena

Selected Cinemas 8pm, ticketmaster.co.nz

Sometimes dudes need money. Sometimes to get money dudes go to sperm banks. Sometimes chicks go to sperm banks to get all juiced up with babies. Then sometimes, a dude who goes to sperm banks to get some cash ends up finding out that he has 533 children. Those French-Canadians have cool movies.

If everyone’s idea of what Ibiza is in terms of lifestyle, parties, people, music and clothing could be personified, odds are the physical manifestation of it would end up looking a lot like producer extraordinaire David Guetta. Hey, if he’s good enough for Nicki Minaj, then he’s good enough for you.

7 Days Live

Good For Nothing

Selected Cinemas

Skycity Theatre

Selected Cinemas 7pm, $43-48, ticketek.co.nz

New Zealand’s own Lee Tamahori makes this actionpacked biopic of Uday Hussein and Latif Yahia. Hussein being the eldest son of Saddam Huessin and Yahia being his body double. Dominic Cooper puts down his musical singing and dancing ABBA shoes and plays both roles in this wonderfully violent and frightening story.

A lot of people get into arguments about the television show 7 Days. But it’s good that the country’s comedians are actually having a go at satire. And this show won’t be censored, so expect some serious shit to be ripped.

A “pavlova western” is a weird name to give a New Zealand cowboy flick. But considering wordplay is essentially marketing 101, you can understand it. Anyway, cowboys rule and it’s cool to see Kiwis get all John Wayne.

Friday 04 Rhys Darby

The Room

The Opera House

Rialto Cinemas 8pm, $41-46, ticketek.co.nz

Hey look, it’s that guy that made the squeaky/high pitched/misunderstanding/excitement/confusion voice that now seems to be what most people who have never been to New Zealand before now associate with being the majority of Kiwis’ accents! Just kidding, Rhys. That was really Jemaine, not you.

My friend said to me the other day, “Are they still showing The Room at cinemas like every month?” And I was all, “Yeah…” And he said, “That’s so weird, hasn’t everyone seen it by now?” And I said, “I guess not, or maybe they want to see it again,” and then we sat in silence. True story.

Iconic Kiwi hip-hop label Dirty Records will be celebrating 10 years of filthy rap this Friday at Auckland’s Studio, with performances from local favourites David Dallas, Scribe, P Money, PNC, Frontline, Che Kamikaze, D-Form and more.

dDub finish off their nationwide tour in Hamilton as they celebrate being back in the studio, back in the game and just back in general with their latest single ‘Send It On Back’. Every ticket purchase comes with a free download of the single.

SATURDAY 05 Tommy Ill

Homebrew 48 Hour Party

Bodega

330 New North Road 9pm, $10-15, undertheradar.co.nz

10am, $30, undertheradar.co.nz

Tommy Ill is a pretty funny guy. As far as rappers go he talks more about being broke and having robot friends as opposed to pouring champagne on bitches. Which is a good thing, because bitches don’t like to have drinks poured on them no matter what rappers might tell you. It’s demeaning. For the bitches.

Those boys that the Government would love to hate except they don’t want to be seen as not cool are pushing the boundaries in the best way they know how. Having an album release party? Yeah? How can we make it better? Oh shit, I know – have it for 48 hours in an old whorehouse!

Tono and The Finance Company

Bridal/Rock’n’roll Fashion Show

The National

Glenview Community Centre 7.30pm, $8, eventfinder.co.nz

8pm, undertheradar.co.nz

As soon as I think of the words bridal mixed with the words rock’n’roll, my mind instantly goes to the Simpsons episode where Otto is meant to get married but instead he drives off with a Poison covers band. So, ladies, if you’re taking your fella to this, make sure he doesn’t have a getaway bus. And don’t marry a dude named Otto.

About not having played a Dunedin show since 2010, Tono said, “After our last show, I decided I wasn’t going to try it again until we were ready. So I’ve played solo shows, and we’ve jumped on bills at the last minute around recording, but this is one that’s keeping me awake at night.”

Darkroom

Ah yes, that time of the year when all the kids who will eventually be in bands that make it to the airwaves and get to have the odd groupie here and there actually start their groupie training camp, AKA Battle Of The Bands.

8pm, FREE

Local Christchurch lad Tom Lark released his EP last year, and it received its fair share of acclaim. Plus the album cover has him looking like a goof wearing some kind of Snoopy balaclava and is up there for local album cover of the year.

If you’re one of those creative types you’ll probably already know all there is to know about the annual aesthetic fandom symposium Semi-Permanent, and you’ll probably already have a ticket. But the smorgasbord of the visual arts isn’t just for designers – it ’s for everyone and anyone interested in all things cool-looking. Here are just a few of the speakers at the eighth SemiPermanent happening at the ASB Theatre in the Auckland Convention Centre on Friday 18 May to Saturday 19 May.

GMUNK

Hi-Res

11:15am, Friday 18 May

1:45pm, Saturday 19 May

Bradley G Munkowitz has worked high up in the motion graphics industry for over 10 years and has continued to remain passionately involved in the global design community. An interactive designer by trade, the motion master also travels the world lecturing and advising students and corporates alike. He’s also a bit of a whizz when it comes to holograms, having been one of the top dogs working on the feature film TRON Legacy.

Founded in 1999 by Alexandra Jugovic and Florian Schmitt, Hi-Res is everything that a boutique design agency should aim to be. The web and digital agency made a name for itself by combining graphic design, fine art, product design, film and music mixed with experimental Adobe Flash technology. Hi-Res have worked with Darren Aronofsky, Dolce & Gabbana, Jägermeister, Chanel, The Economist and more, and have won many awards including Cannes Cyberlions, Clios, BAFTA and Webby awards to name just a few.

Alex Trochut 5pm, Friday 18 May

Barcelona-born designer Alex Trochut has made breakthroughs combining his art with calligraphy, and is one of the most recognisable typographers of his generation. With an ethos that states “more is more”, the illustrator extraordinaire has Nike, The Rolling Stones, Nixon, British Airways, Coca-Cola, The Guardian, Saatchi and Saatchi, Arcade Fire and many more under his client belt.

Wallpaper* 5:45pm, Friday 18 May

London magazine Wallpaper* is sending its art director Meirion Pritchard over to teach and preach about the intricacies of the niche design publishing industry. This designer has worked in the digital and print spectrums and was involved in Wallpaper* ’s redesign in 2003, which has seen the magazine grow and become synonymous with design excellence.

Industrial Light & Magic 5pm, Saturday 19 May

One of the digital divisions of LucasFilm, Industrial Light & Magic are responsible for some of the most visually groundbreaking cinematic ventures of the past few years, including Transformers, Coyboys & Aliens, Rango, The Last Airbender, Terminator: Salvation and more. Visual effects director Christian Alzmann will be representing ILM at Semi-Permanent.

Ron English 5:45, Saturday 19 May

The father of POPaganda, Ron English is known for many of his mash-up pieces that are simply astounding to look at. Whether it’s the Marilyn Monroe with Minnie Mouse breasts, a young Ronald McDonald smoking, Abraham Obama, little baby Hulk or the plethora of his other works, Ron English’s mind is one that is worth your exploration. The artist winds up the symposium on Saturday.

Kelli Anderson 11:15am, Saturday 19 May

New York artist, designer, printmaker and tinkerer Kelli Anderson has been lucky to not find contempt in her contemporary work. Back in 2008 she and a large group of collaborators perfectly counterfeited The New York Times which caught readers off guard with stories from a progressive utopian future. Recently she created a paper record player that got the likes of Make:, PCWorld, Wired, NPR and more media outlets interested in her work.

Our relationship with Australia has always been a competitive one. We accuse them of stealing our pavlova, sports players and actors – so The Axis of Awesome lead guitarist Lee Naimo expects comparisons to be made between them and our own Flight of the Conchords, purely based on them falling into the genre of ‘musical comedy’. But with one of the highest-rated comedy videos on YouTube to date, sitting pretty at 20 million hits, The Axis Of Awesome has established a niche of their own. The Australian trio first gained international attention for their YouTube sensation ‘Four Chords’, a mash-up medley demonstrating that 47 of the most recognisable pop songs could be boiled down to just four chords. Axis was formed in the underground of comedy clubs and improvisation groups; Naimo – the “way, way back up vocalist” of the group – and lead vocalist Jordan Raskopoulos carved their way up through the comedy world. When the National Theatresports champions finally tired of “the scene”, they began to look for a different way to express their comedic talents. Enter Benny Davis, a keyboard and ‘Four Chords’. Naimo says Davis was one of those “talented arseholes that could pick up a tune just by listening to it”. In Davis’ experience of playing live covers, he realised the songs all boiled down to four chords. Naimo and Raskopoulos had found their ticket to ride. “We heard him playing this song and basically said to him, ‘Jordan and I are forming a band and we want to ride your coattails,’” laughs Naimo. “It was a year before he let us perform that song together. He had been holding it from us. We wanted to perform it at the Melbourne Comedy Festival when we won the Moosehead Award so we persuaded him to give it up.” Naimo might appear to give all the band’s credit to Davis – he adds Davis is also “short, balding and an aggressive driver” – but the group has come into their own, having released two albums Scissors, Paper, ROCK and Infinity Explosion, and toured numerous shows around Australia. Now, they are making their debut appearance at the NZ International Comedy Festival. While Naimo expects “a big party and lots of Flight of the Conchords comparisons” from New Zealand, he says festivalgoers should expect a wild show of “musical comedy, blood, pyrotechnics, animatronics and a hologram of Tupac might make an appearance – all made out of drugs. And if we can’t get that through customs then an hour of musical comedy.”

WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER

Meet Barry Morgan – the smooth-talking, suave, safari suitwearing organ salesman. And according to Barry, organs are the musical instrument of the future. “The young people are attracted to the drum machine in my 1981 Hammond Aurora Classic,” he enthuses. “It’s a big fat sound on a big system and it sounds beautiful.” To prove it, he plays me a wee ditty on his Yamaha, the smaller of his organs he is bringing to New Zealand as part of his show Barry Morgan’s World Of Organs. Being promoted as a comedy show, Barry claims he never set out to be funny – he just wanted to share the enjoyment, and hopefully sell a few organs along the way to pay the bills. His passion for the organ began in his family home, with his “dear departed mother Nancy”. “She introduced me to the wonder of the organ when I was just a boy, and I took to it like a duck to water. I started playing in the church but now I play the Bossanova and the one finger method.” Ladies, don’t be alarmed – the one finger organ method is actually an easy way to play the organ using “touch and release” and a whole lot of colour-coded keys. Barry says he hopes the audience and he can make “beautiful music together” using the “simple, safe method”. Need I say more. Barry has already become an instant audience favourite in Australia, where he was plucked from obscurity to perform on ABC’s TV show Spicks And Specks. Now, he is bringing his Toyota Crown Royal saloon and 500kg of organs to New Zealand for the first time. Accompanying the organ with the velvety tones of his voice, it is Barry’s goal to rekindle Kiwis’ passion for the organ. “The sound really touches the heart. It’s a great sound, groovy drum beat and a sound that resonates with this brilliant piece of ‘80s tech.”

ZOWIE

Growing up on a healthy diet of music, music and more music, Zoe Fleury (AKA Zowie) is the first to point out the influence both her musician father and music loving mother have had on her. “He’d always add in something weird, like some dirty synthy sounds.” There’s no doubt this love of the musically weird and wonderful was passed from father to daughter, with Fleury forming an early fixation on drums, and “things that were different for a female”. Playing on a borrowed kit at the tender age of 10, she recalls not being able to put the sticks down. And from there it was a natural progression to a kit of her own, school bands and a lifelong passion. “Beat is my most loved thing; I just love crazy rhythm.” Studying at MAINZ in Auckland, Zowie professes she spent most of the first year staring at classmate Maeve Munro. “She was so cool,” she says, “like a girl Joey Ramone.” After they finally overcame their mutual shyness, they got together and formed the Bengal Lights. This pairing provided a new opportunity for Fleury: the chance to explore her dormant vocal talents. Fleury’s next musical project in 2008 was largely inspired by a personal love of robots… and Gary Numan. Taking to the stage as a character from the year 3000, Bionic Pixie hit the music scene with attitude and aplomb. By 2009 Fleury was living in LA; and her look was changing, as was her writing. “I was writing in a thousand different ways, not just beats first anymore. Writing as Bionic Pixie I’d start with the beat, layer one synth, one guitar, some vocals and that was it.” As she became creatively stronger her character did too, morphing and evolving into Zowie. So began the process of working on her debut album Love Demolition, almost two years in the making. Having the luxury of working with her “dream list” of fellow musos and producers (about 15 in all) led to furious planning and more time in LA, as well as Australia and a decent stint in Sweden. While finding the collaborative process exhilarating, there were some new challenges for Fleury. “Mixing and finishing was super long; all these tracks of guitars, live drums, etc.” Add to that the fact that she was working with producers on the other side of the world, and you can imagine it’d be tricky even for a seasoned professional, let alone a first-timer. One aspect that wasn’t too much of a challenge was being signed to major international label Sony. “I didn’t feel like there were boundaries, despite the label. They were really supportive no boundaries or limits, and I found that really exciting.”

DAVID Guetta Time to get your doof on, party people: the man with the whitest, hardest house in Ibiza (and a heart-shaped swimming pool) is heading here. Mega-Mega French DJ Dave Guetta, who you may have spied raving it up with a big screen DJ Booth on recent episode of The Graham Norton Show, has locked in plans to play Auckland’s Vector Arena on Thursday May 3. The man has over 30 million Facebook friends and a billion YouTube viewings plus multiple Grammys. His latest release, Nothing But The Beat, has clocked over 1.4 million sales in just over 18 weeks. Mon Dieu, you cry! But why would this come as a surprise? Especially when it includes the hits ‘Turn Me On’ (featuring Madonna collaborator Nicky Minaj), ‘Little Bad Girl’ (with Taio Cruz & Ludacris), ‘Titanium’ (with the sweet lungs of Sia), Snoop Dogg’s guest effort ‘Sweet’ and the return of Usher on ‘. It’ll be interesting to see who he brings in to perform these and more on the Vector stage! All this is not bad for a DJ who, at the tender age of 17, began the game at clubs in Paris. Back then he was just spinning popular tunes – until he turned on to house music, especially Farley Master Funk, thanks to French radio during the late ‘80s. And that started the whole wagon rolling with hosting his own club nights, and the release of ‘Nation Rap’ – a hip-hop collaboration with French rapper Sidney Duteil. And from there it was a steady climb through the ranks to the big clubs of London, Ibiza and the world. Five albums, multiple awards, a raft of tunes and collaborations and a workload like you wouldn’t believe. Guetta’s finally heading Down Under. A super DJ like this is about as close to vinyl royalty as you’ll get – Vive la RPM! WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

“I wanna destroy you with sound,” Zowie sings in the title track. And you know what – if it’s more of her creative and dark electro-pop sound, I think I’m ok with that. WRITTEN BY REN KIRK

album reviews Florence + The Machine Florence + The Machine MTV Unplugged llll

Florence Welch has always had a unique approach in creating her music. With endless instruments that fill every second of a song and enchanting vocals, one could only eagerly anticipate a new album – and Florence + The Machine MTV Unplugged is one not to be missed. It’s comprised of 14 triedand-true fan favourite tracks, plus two additional covers: ‘Try a Little Tenderness’, and Johnny Cash’s ‘Jackson’, which is truly glorified with soft acoustics, violins, harps and a delicate choir which all emphasise Welch’s vibrant voice. Attention to detail is so vast that you would find yourself analysing

Dead Set On Living is the fourth and newest album by Cancer Bats, and is filled with erratic guitars and provocative lyrics that will get you jumping and screaming along. Originally from Canada, Cancer Bats have become popular around the globe with their hardcorepunk sound and their dynamic performances on stage, which they proudly demonstrated to us back in 2010 when they played a gig here in New Zealand. Lead singer Liam Cormier’s vocals are impressive due to their darkened quality and his way of delivering lyrics with genuine raw emotion, all while matching his talents to the psychedelic guitar riffs – oozing with energy – in the background. Dead Set On Living demonstrates the band’s strive for success and with lyrics like, “This life is mine for the taking, I’m a ride it until the day I die.” And when you listen, you know they’ve already found it.

Module’s latest album could be Vangelis and Tron’s imaginary lovechild, and boy oh boy is it a dreamy wee fella. Recording assorted, everyday sound bytes from a six-year period of his life, Jeramiah Ross, AKA Module, has crafted these “sonic photographs” into a multi-layered, electronic onion of sound. Each track is a fresh landscape, containing its own unique environment of synth, drums, and electro-chicanery. It’s cohesive but by no means uniform; like a series of short films that create an impressive, ambient full feature. Highlights include ‘A Vehement Storm’, which builds superbly into a full-drum kick (which will have you grinning like an idiot when it drops); ‘The Pieces Fit’, with its melancholic piano and spooky vocals; and the more optimistic ‘Endlessly Ocean’ (more drums, and more shit-eating grins). All up, Imagineering is a quality release from one of New Zealand’s leading electronic artists.

Of Monsters And Men got their break when they won Músiktilraunir, which sounds like a psychological disorder, but is in fact an Icelandic talent contest. Good on those Icelanders. My Head Is An Animal is 50 minutes of amiable, accented indie folk, the kind that makes you think of hillwalking, hand-holding and air so cold it slows your breath. The boy/girl back-and-forth vocals should be cheesy, but they’re not, and the Mumford-ish builds in ‘King And Lionheart’ and ‘Dirty Paws’ should sound tired, but they don’t. Maybe it’s the way Nanna Hilmarsdóttir’s voice seems to hover sweetly above the words, as if she’s trying to trick you into not noticing she’s singing about wretched heartbreak (‘Love Love Love’) or a bear-slaying frontiersman she read about on badassoftheweek.com (‘Six Weeks’). Or maybe it’s the glockenspiel. No matter. It’s delicious and it’s smart, and it just made my “Best of Autumn” playlist.

Breathing new life into a style that peaked some 40-odd years ago, Alabama Shakes’ irresistible debut album is a tour de force of southern charm. Boys And Girls recently debuted at number one on the freshly minted Official Record Store Chart in the UK, beating out some heavyweight competitors. And yet it’s no surprise that people celebrating a vintage format would embrace this band; their sound is decidedly vintage from top to bottom. In the best traditions of Janis Joplin and Otis Redding, frontwoman Brittany Howard’s voice explodes out of the speakers on songs like ‘Rise To The Sun’ and ‘You Ain’t Alone’, crushing any doubts that this is a talent we’ll probably be talking about for years to come. Sure, there’s nothing new here; it’s not groundbreaking or cutting edge, but somehow it just doesn’t matter. Boys And Girls effortlessly sweeps you back past the intervening decades to a time when soul was all that mattered.

on screen On Screen Highlights This Week TV & FILM

You’re hard pushed to find someone who doesn’t know what The Jersey Shore is. Those meatheads running around fucking anything with two legs, looking at themselves in the mirror 24/7 and attempting to slaughter the English language have made their mark on this world. And now it’s our turn with The GC.

Follow the Maori Aussies (Mozzies, as they call themselves) Tame, Jade, Zane DJ Tuini, JadeLouise, Nuz and Tate as they enact that god-awful cliché of working hard and playing harder, and turn their hardearned labouring wages into a property developing empire. The synopsis tells us that “Tame is the only single one in the group but Jade and Zane find it hard

film

One of the most ambitious films to come out of New Zealand this year, this grim but uplifting tale, shot in New Zealand and Europe, gives new meaning to the “me generation”. Matt Whelan’s Michael is often hard to feel for. When he discovers he’s dying, he doesn’t lament the fact he won’t get to scale Everest or help the poor in India – but he’s damned if he’ll miss out on partying, drug-taking and sex. His lust for pleasure and disregard for others makes for an intriguing protagonist but wears thin after a while; there’s no character arc to speak of, which ultimately leaves you feeling as empty as he does. Michael refuses to succumb to a victim mentality, unlike the

western” Good for Nothing, which has been described as a hybrid between the sensibilities of Sam Raimi and the Coen brothers. There are worse directorial icons to be likened to, as feature debut director Mike Wallis will know. The Five-Year Engagement also hits cinemas this week, which is the latest wider Apatow family release from the guys and gals behind Forgetting Sarah Marshal and Get Him To The Greek.

to resist his offers of fun-fuelled nights out, much to the chagrin of their girlfriends, Jessi and Rose,” while DJ Tuini, Jade-Louise, Nuz and Tate chase a different dream of international club stardom, recording contracts, body building and all round general poonhounde (we can only hope). Expect brand new slang that you’ll end up using much to your dismay, along with plenty of guaranteed “hot hook-ups, explosive arguments, a shock revelation from one of the group about their sexuality, all-over tans, advice on how to score in a club and of course, a good amount of ribbing their Aussie neighbours.” Other on screen highlights this week include the cinematic release of New Zealand cowboy/”pavlova

mysteriously self-sabotaging French girl, Sylvie (Roxane Mesquida) he encounters. Their attraction is convincing, but Sylvie feels under-developed to the point where the film’s climax fails to hit the emotional nerve it might have done in the book. Instead you’re left wondering if the film is trying to make a point about the knife-edge we all walk in life, or simply trying to shock. Still, first-time director and screenwriter Kirstin Marcon, who based the film on Steven Gannaway’s novel, Seraphim Blues, has created something unusual, well-crafted and poignant. Emilio Estevez’s career as a writer-director has yet to bloom into something worth noticing, with his previous film Bobby getting a general “yeah… nah” response. Teaming up with his father Martin Sheen, Estevez seems to have found some stable ground with this road movie, effectively showing how a simple journey, more specifically the El Camino de Santiago, can open the way to inner enlightenment. Sheen’s performance is superbly subdued, bringing real depth to a character that was maybe a tad underwritten. Along the way, he runs into a number of side characters ranging from interesting to annoyingly ostentatious. We warm to them eventually, largely thanks to

their interactions with each another. A big drawback is the film’s lack of conflict. Any quarrel between the travellers hardly ever goes beyond a mild irritation, while Sheen’s character, Tom, is so closed up for most of the walk that we barely get to witness his inner turmoil. The one scene where he does rip into his companions provides some remedy for this. The film is also a little longer than it needs to be, suffering from some noticeable pacing dips in the middle. Despite this, The Way is a serene experience that prefers to take you by the hand rather than drag you by the foot. WRITTEN BY LIAM MAGUREN, FLICKS.CO.NZ

“It’s everything I love about the ‘classic’ period of jazz – it’s warm, it swings, it’s intimate, and as the title would suggest, it’s poetic in a lyrical sense.” – Sunday Star Times “The playing is all beautifully tasteful and nuanced. It feels like a classic ensemble record – one that’s cool not for it’s innovation, but because it sounds like the greats.” – The New Zealand Herald
