Fans of the mainstay festival Rhythm & Vines should be getting their moneys ready, as tickets for the 2012 festival go on sale later this month. The 10th incarnation of the wildly popular festival has been given the go-ahead, and while details aren’t fully announced yet organisers have given an on-sale date for tickets – presales will be on Tuesday 22 May at 9am and general release tickets will be available on Wednesday 23 May from 9am. The good news keeps coming with organisers saying that they will not be inflating the ticket prices on basic BW/R&V campsite tickets and three day R&V passes. Rhythm & Alps has also been announced to make a comeback – presale and general release tickets for the southern festival go on sale the same days as R&V. More info for both festivals can be found at rhythmandvines.co.nz and rhythmandalps.co.nz.

In the first official audio-only release Animal Collective has made since 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, and the Baltimore band have just released their latest single. Deakin joins the band once more after taking a leave of absence, so now the world music hype extraordinaires are back to being a four piece. Animal Collective have been continuing their solo stints after the visual album ODDSAC, but now they’ve reunited for the 7” split Honeycomb / Gotham. As per tradition the music is far more easily described as more of a constant evolution as opposed to likening it to previous efforts, but fans of the Water Curses EP / Merriweather Post Pavilion / Fall Be Kind EP may find this more intriguing than fans of the Sung Tongs / Here Comes The Indian era of Animal Collective. Either way, it’s worth a listen no matter what your appreciation (or lack thereof) of AC may be.
Home Brew Crew’s self-titled album made its debut at the top spot in the NZ Top 40 album chart last week. Home Brew is the first local number one hip-hop debut album since Scribe’s The Crusader back in November 2003. Due to Home Brew’s explicit content the gang got very little commercial radio and TV support, so the top spot debut is one worth bragging about.

The new Sacha Baron Cohen flick The Dictator hits cinemas this week, but it’s his upcoming plans that have us more interested. A while ago the actor/comedian was rumoured to play Freddie Mercury in the upcoming Queen biopic. Now Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) is the frontrunner to direct the film, and it sounds like Sacha Baron Cohen is still on to play the frontman. Remaining Queen members Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon have all given Frears the okay to direct the as yet untitled film which will follow the formative years of the band, culminating with Queen’s 1985 Live Aid performance.
Stuff reported that Trinity Roots has been forced into liquidation. The band’s registered trading company Trinity Roots Ltd reportedly owes nearly $100,000 to the taxman, and subsequently liquidators have taken control of all of Trinity Roots Ltd’s finances. Roughly two-thirds of what the Wellington trio’s limited company owes is interest on fines issued to in the mid-2000s.

Heroes Parade Thanks in no small part to the overwhelming attention that The Avengers has (deservedly) earned itself, comic book movies are getting more and more popular. Think back to 2008 when we saw the release of Iron Man and The Dark Knight – not since then have we seen such a positive year for comic book movies. Now there’s been plenty of big news about upcoming film projects that even the graphically-noviced can relate to. It’s been announced (unsurprisingly) that a sequel to The Avengers will be happening. This isn’t big news as the film has been a box office hit internationally, and cast members have been signed up for many movies (Chris Evans alone is still under contract for seven more appearances in films as Captain America). However, with Captain America 2, Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and a mystery project (speculation suggests Ant-Man or Doctor Strange) all slated for release over the next few years, it’s not likely we’ll see the second assemblage of Avengers until 2015 at the earliest. Following that, there are whispers of another Hulk movie with a possible release date sometime in 2015. Will they keep the same actor for this one this time? A sequel to the reboot/reimagining of X-Men: First Class is in the works and is aiming for a late 2013/early 2014 release. A reboot of the God-awful Daredevil flick could be happening as Fox have hired screenwriter David James Kelly (Hard Candy, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) rewrite the script and direct the film. The viral marketing for the new Spider-Man movie is still going strong, and speculation is already rife that this reboot of the web-slinger will be a trilogy. The new trailer pitches the film with a much darker tone and newcomer Andrew Garfield looks like he’s got Peter Parker’s comedic tone, nailed. Kick-Ass 2 is officially happening. The second arc of the comic book has all wrapped up, and director of the first KickAss Matthew Vaughn is in talks with Universal to bring the sequel to the studio. Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down, Cry_Wolf) has been picked by Vaughn to direct. Production for the film is slated for September this year.

UNDER THE HOOD A new documentary directed by Sam Peacocke sets out to explore the mechanics behind one of New Zealand’s most iconic rock acts. Re-watching home movies is a painful experience – every intimate moment of your life captured on camera. Or videos shown at your 21st of times you were too drunk to function, laid bare in front of friends and family. For Shihad frontman Jon Toogood, this is what it will be like to watch Shihad: Beautiful Machine. The documentary, tracking Shihad’s 23 years of fame, is more than just “every C4 interview we have every done” – it is a truly personal, gritty, in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at one of New Zealand’s most successful and enduring rock bands. And for Toogood, that is something to be nervous about. “Its a weird one for me,” he explains. “It’s so brutally honest and I’ve got to say I’m freaking about going to the premiere with a bunch of strangers, watching my life up there. “I think I’ll be proud – after I stopped blubbering because it’s so fuckin’ hardcore,” he laughs. “It’s a surreal and emotional experience that could have been a disaster, but director Sam Peacocke handled it with respect.” Beautiful Machine is as hardcore as you can get. It’s more than the music;
it’s also an exploration into New Zealand, the psyche and the music industry. That, and the raw, gritty details of Shihad’s personal life – Jon’s ex-wife, the battle to retain their name on that infamous American tour, guitarist Phil Knight’s battle with alcohol, and Toogood’s father, who passed away at the start of this year. “Pretty fuckin’ bare bones,” as Toogood describes it. “It’s not an easy watch.” Particularly reliving moments on film with his father was something Toogood says he didn’t think he would be able to face. He attributes the way Peacocke has filmed it for him “wanting to see more” of his Dad. Then, there are parts of the film Toogood wishes he could avoid at the Wellington premiere. “There are also some pretty embarrassing compromises and mistakes – stuff that kept me up at night for years – and it’s all up there. I might have to sneak away for parts of it for a drink and leave Mum watching it,” he laughs. When The Lights Go Out
Eighteen years on from the release of ‘Crystalator’, frontman Shayne Carter is flicking the switch on Dimmer for good. Sad news has been circulating in the New Zealand music world over the last month: Dimmer frontman Shayne Carter has officially announced two farewell shows will commence in mid-May, signalling the end of the band for good. Formed in the ‘90s, Carter’s Dimmer has released a somewhat modest body of work over two decades. The earliest work was the now-classic Sub Pop single ‘Crystalator’. That was followed by a near five-year silence, as Carter painfully and meticulously spliced together his manshed epic I Believe You Are A Star, followed by the award-winning You’ve Got To Hear The Music in ‘04, There My Dear in ‘07 and Degrees Of Existence in 2009. Looking back, Carter reflects, “The whole idea originally was to have a collective, and to have me as the common denominator. In the last few years it’s turned into a real band – just because I’ve had a more consistent line-up. “I suppose the last couple of albums were more [proper band] kind of albums, whereas the first two were more ‘dude pottering around in a shed’ kind of styles.” Asked if Dimmer was intended as a “lounge” project, Carter replies, “The first thing [‘Crystalator’] was sort of the opposite of lounge – more like a bomb going off in your lounge! “But I suppose [Dimmer] really started as a quieter, lounge-style project. Early on I made, with Gary Sullivan (drums at the
time), a choice. We’d come from loud rock bands and were completely over that sound. So we spent a long time jamming, developing a quiet kind of music, making music work without beating your chest. “Over time Dimmer got saddled with that lounge kind of title. But if anyone has seen the band over the last few years, it’s become a real sonic beast. So we’ve come full circle.” In a recent press release, he noted, “I feel like Dimmer has become tied to a certain section of my catalogue of songs. I’ve always had a policy of playing only material associated with whatever project I’ve been involved in, and I guess the decision to put the Dimmer name to bed frees me up from that.” Carter has spent much time jamming and gigging for others over the years, most notably of late with Jon Togood’s The Adults and on his mum’s new album of Elvis covers. And never one to be idle, Carter’s also been working on a solo effort. “I’ve been writing on piano – I like the naivety of a new instrument. I don’t want to play like Billy Joel, I like to have a restrictive palate. As a bassist it’s good to go into things with a fresh perspective. “My music is a journey, a variation on a theme, a continuation, not a deviation of direction. I enjoy the tension and release in music but I also want some ambiguity, and a feeling, or music of unease. Like films, the music I do reflects the places I come from,” he rationalises. Taking out the Garbage After a seven-year hiatus, the ‘90s indie-alternative band is back… on their terms.
Shirley Manson doesn’t want to talk about break-ups. Nor does she want to talk about that infamous moment walking offstage in Perth in 2005, or that time she pooed in an ex-boyfriend’s cornflakes. But the Garbage frontwoman is very open about relationships – in terms of Garbage and their new album Not Your Kind of People. As the name suggests, there is something different about this record. Not only is it significant because it’s the ‘90s rockers’ first album in seven years, but it’s also their first to be solely produced and recorded under their new label Stun Volume. It was a relationship breakdown, Manson explains with a pause. Describing themselves as the band that “didn’t fit in”, Garbage had finally become at loggerheads with their record company and eventually, each other. But for Manson, walking off tour wasn’t the end of Garbage – it was the beginning of beautiful, more harmonious relationship. “It was more than just our frustration with our record company,” she explains. “It was also our role in the relationship. We were at odds with them in certain parts of the world because the label just didn’t see eyeto-eye with us. “We were just bad bed partners too – [we’re] an obtuse bunch, and we have a strong sense of how we want to conduct our business. So too does a major label. There are a lot of artists that thrive and unfortunately for us it wasn’t us.” For Manson, this meant the most “easy and natural thing to do” was to start their own label, have a good time and start out fresh the way they wanted.
And it shows. The new album sounds like a return to form, a return to the sound that made Garbage who they were –‘Stupid Girl’, ‘Supervixen’ – a blend of pop, rock and Manson’s distinctive growl that makes Garbage indefinable. “It makes me happy when people say that [this album is like the first],” she says. “I know the first record we made really connected to people and I feel like people are responding in a similar way to this one, even though the records.” Learning form the mistakes made in their earlier relationship, this album also represents a truly collaborative effort between Manson and fellow band members Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig. “I think we realised in order to have a happy band, you need to have everyone really invested in it,” Manson says with a laugh. “We didn’t write separately like we have in the past. This time round for the most part everyone wrote songs in the same room, as one, and it made for a happier family.” With a busy year ahead for the band, Manson is excited to be back on the road, and particularly looking forward to touring New Zealand and Australia where Garbage initially found fame in the 1990s. “We’re in an incredible privileged position. Not many bands can go away for seven years and come back to this incredible welcome. We feel this is our ‘lightning in the bowl’ moment. This isn’t going to come around for us again, so we’re just trying to ride the waves and hope for the best!” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER ALBUM OUT NOW: NOT YOUR KIND OF PEOPLE

because he says as much, and because he swears a lot. It looks good, and it’s big, dumb fun. It might be presented in a derivative package, but at least has a lot of polish. The story is forgettable, and the jumping is entertaining; if that’s enough to pique your interest, give this one a go. WRITTEN BY TRISTAN CLARK
Dragon’s Dogma Preview PS3/Xbox 360
Dragon’s Dogma is a very familiar concept. An openworld role-playing game, your goal is to head out into the world and make your mark on it, while helping (or hurting) others and having numerous adventures. Playing it, on the other hand, is unfamiliar. Yes, it adheres to many conventions, but it also chucks a lot of them out the window, resulting in something new. For example, other game objects will block your spells, and you can clamber all over the larger enemies as you attempt to dispatch them to
the underworld. You also need to be careful about going out at night (as that’s when the real bad guys come out to play), but fortunately the ability to hire heroes to help you can reduce the risk somewhat. It’s still a bit rough around the edges, with A.I. characters that dart around unrealistically etc, but the combination of new features and a grounded sense of reality help to balance it out. If you like games like Skyrim and Kingdoms Of Amalur, watch out for Dragon’s Dogma on May 25th. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

Are you after a game where your brain can go on holiday? One that isn’t particularly original, has its fair share of flaws, but also makes you feel like a superhero? Meet Prototype 2, the gaming equivalent of a late-‘80s Schwarzenegger flick. A virus is affecting New York City, turning most of its inhabitants into mindless zombies. You, however, are affected in a different way; you get the ability to transform your body into a veritable cornucopia of vicious super-powered weaponry. What follows is a slaughter: as Heller, your general approach to exposing cover-ups and crooked scientists is to hack apart and consume everyone in your path. There’s no subtlety here; you can tell the main character is angry

album reviews GoodShirt Skinny mirrors llll
Goodshirt hung on the line for a while there, sunning after a saturation of success whilst the young gents pursued personal passions. Now, after a ramble about the country playing to adoring nostalgia-junkies, comes the welcome and humble release of their “new stuff”. Five songs comprise a thoughtful and luminous EP in Skinny Mirror. Opening track ‘Out Of Our League’ is a meditative folky anthem which surprises yet satisfies. One of the most appealing things about Goodshirt was their punchy and driving songs, and although this EP has an overall different feel

ALBUM OF THE WEEK from their earlier work, second track ‘We Won’t Tire’ sounds awfully familiar, harking back to what the band has achieved and – hopefully – heralding what is to come. This is a mature and positive collection of songs proving that good songwriting and fine musicianship never left us. Goodshirt are still a perfect fit and as fresh as ever. WRITTEN BY JACK GABRIEL

Genre-blending powerhouse Santigold has returned, but was Master Of My Make Believe worth the wait? Four years is a long time in the music world, and Santi White’s time out of the spotlight since her debut seems to have been spent trying to refine her diverse palate of influences. On her long-awaited sophomore effort White has smoothed down her sharp edges, and while this does lead to a more balanced effort, it seems to have sacrificed some of the eclectic genius of Santogold. There is a name that hangs ever in the air when listening to this album and it’s M.I.A, a comparison that has never seemed more apt than on album opener ‘Go!’. Whether that’s bad or not is up for debate. Yet reggae-influenced tracks like ‘Disparate Youth’ and attention-grabber ‘Fame’ draw this album back from the brink of mediocrity and help recapture some of the magic of White’s debut.
On his staggering 27th album The Bravest Man In The Universe, soul singer Bobby Womack is expounding devotion and skepticism in equal measure – a hard balancing act to maintain. Though he made his name in the early ‘70s, Womack’s star has been on the rise in the last few years, helped by his recent work with Gorillaz. It appears that it wasn’t a clean break; Gorillaz/ Blur alumni Damon Albarn helped out here on production duties. The title track swims in a slinky trip-hop groove, while the retro funk of ‘Love Is Gonna Lift You Up’ is crisp and refreshing. On The Bravest Man In The Universe, Womack has completely overshot neo-soul and landed in the future – an incomparable blend of soul, r’n’b, electronica and old-school grit that proves once again that you can never count the crafty veteran out.
This compilation of singles from Leeds favourite Britpop revivalists mirrors their career somewhat, with a fizzy first-half and a slightly limp second-act. Those wonder days on the back of 2005 album, Employment, have petered out for the Kaiser Chiefs, with their last project (2011’s The Future Is Medieval) getting a tough time of it due to a stagnating fan-base. So you might suggest that this is an attempt to remind people of what the band can bring - namely some impressive power-pop and an eye for frothy hooks. Early on in Souvenir that’s exactly what we get: with tracks like ‘Oh My God’, ‘Never Miss A Beat’ and ‘I Predict A Riot’, each doing the business. However, that energy dies the further through the album you get, and by the end you can’t help but wonder what’s next for a group whose best days might now be behind them.
WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR
WRITTEN BY DARREN MASLIN
Taking the experimental math rock of Brooklyn-based trio Battles to strange new places, Dross Glop shudders and dances its way into your ear canals. Rebounding easily from the departure of Tyondai Braxton, the afro-sporting guitarist and the keyboardist who featured prominently on 2007’s Mirrored, Battles came back with a bang with 2011’s Gloss Drop. Since then they have been drip-feeding their fans with 12” vinyl releases, each featuring a remixed track or two. Altogether they’ve managed to enlist an impressive cabal of producers to re-imagine various tracks, and the resulting mélange has been collated into Dross Glop. Does it really work as an album? No, it’s scattered and disjointed, and many tracks just seem to go on and on. But as long as you approach it with an open mind (something Battles fans should be accustomed to) there are a fair few gems to be discovered on this compilation.

on screen THE KID WITH A BIKE FILM llll
A moving, sweet and at times harrowing tale about an abandoned boy, The Kid With A Bike is also a chilling insight into the psychological roots of crime. Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, famous for their naturalistic style, won the 2011 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix and a Golden
Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. And yet it almost doesn’t feel like a film. It’s more a snapshot of life than a story carefully moulded for entertainment value. It’s also a disturbing look at how childhood pain can fester, reminding us that society’s most vulnerable are
those without guidance from the right influences. Cécile De France gives a great performance as the boy’s guardian, Samantha, a selfless yet strongwilled hairdresser who takes him into her home, as does the young Thomas Doret, who is entirely convincing in his portrayal of a little boy lost. The raw documentary feel won’t be to everyone’s taste but the Dardennes’ lack of cinematic tricks grounds this in reality, even if there are times when it’s hard to sympathise with the behaviours of Cyril’s father – and

Whilst not quite the triumph we might have been hoping for, this lushly produced gothic comedy is director Tim Burton’s best film since 2003’s Big Fish. Depp, who was so annoying in Alice in Wonderland and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (Burton’s worst films if you take Planet Of The Apes out of the picture), is no less affected in his performance here, but for some reason it just works. I recoiled when, in the trailer, I saw the scene of him trying to find the little people in the television, but it’s his character’s lack of familiarity with the modern era (well, 1972) that provides most of the film’s best jokes. The hippy scene alone is worth the price of admission. Re-teaming with his old production designer Rick Heinrichs proves to be a great move for Burton and the look
to a degree, Samantha. Intimate, elegant touches prevail: while being tucked into bed, Cyril tells Samantha her breath is warm, his way of saying she’s a comfort; in another scene the camera lingers on the resilient boy as he pedals through the night. Poignant and true.
of the film evokes the best parts of Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands and Mars Attacks!. Helena Bonham Carter has the coolest look, but Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloë Grace Moretz have more to do, and they’re both excellent. Eva Green stomps around with too much lipstick on, but seems to be having a lot of fun as the baddie, while former Neighbours star Bella Heathcote steps up in a major way to play the love interest. Her enormous eyes bode well for her future career. The plot feels a tad directionless, but the baroque proceedings managed to hold my interest throughout. I like that Burton is looking to his past for inspiration here, but he has a way to go to reclaim his status as mainstream Hollywood’s boldest visual filmmaker. WRITTEN BY DOMINIC CORRY, FLICKS.CO.NZ
The title of writer-director JC Chandor’s dizzying debut refers to the moment when all debts must be repaid – the day of reckoning. And boy does he deliver. At an unnamed Wall Street firm (Lehman Brothers!), recently-fired risk manager Stanley Tucci gives young buck Zachary Quinto (Spock in Star Trek) a file that will, ultimately, start the 2007 recession. So begins a financial forest fire that, over the course of one long, over-caffeinated night, engulfs the entire company and – as we now know – world. Part of Chandor’s genius (or extreme good fortune) is that each new level of the corporation is overseen by a brilliant actor who’s correspondingly higher up the Hollywood pecking order than the last. So Quinto reports to Paul Bettany, who reports
to Kevin Spacey, who reports to Jeremy Irons, each more compromised – or corrupt – than their inferiors. “You and I can’t control it, or stop it, even slow it,” says Irons urbanely as he sells a million futures down the river with a lupine smile. “We just react. And we make a lot of money if we get it right.” It’s a brutal world (“Still alive?” the execs keep asking each other), brilliantly evoked by one of the most impressive casts assembled in recent memory (Simon ‘The Mentalist’ Baker is particularly chilling). But this is Chandor’s triumph, and marks him out as someone to keep an eye on in the future. Let’s hope he’s never handed such an allpervading human horror story again. Moral Orel A Review by Harlequin Jones
While TVNZ7 may not be around for much longer, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy what is still available to watch before we kiss the underdog of New Zealand programming goodbye. Wallace Chapman’s show The New Old airs this Friday 18 May at 9:30pm, exploring “the fast developing trend for old and half-forgotten styles, pastimes and tastes that have come into vogue again”. It’s a show that’s definitely onto something, and it’s becoming clear that Wallace Chapman could be the next Marcus Lush – an intelligent presenter with an eye for alternative yet intriguing stories. Over on the best Sky TV channel around, SoHo has Veep on Thursdays at 9pm. Fans of The Thick Of It will recognise the overly savvy and satirical campness of the new Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfield) show which was created by Armando Iannucci (In The Loop). The show follows the Vice-President of America as she bumbles her way around the press conferences, big oil and bigger dick-swinging that we all really hope goes down in American politics. It’s funny, it’s clever and you can’t help but think Tony Hale (Arrested Development) has found
another role that may fit him just as well as Buster. While SoHo is usually the reliable source for the best American shows around, Prime always tends to come in with some gold too. Boardwalk Empire is airing on the underdog channel on Sundays at 9:35pm. If you aren’t up to play with the Martin Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg produced series that stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly McDonald, Michael Pitt and Michael Shannon, then now’s the time to get up to speed with this fantastic prohibition-era crime drama. TV3’s Sunday night movie is one that has more re-watch capability than Spongebob Squarepants does for stoners. The Oscar-winning Walk The Line plays at 8:30pm this Sunday 20 May, and it’s hard to imagine a better way of winding down your weekend than watching Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon tell the story of the iconic country man Johnny Cash. I’m really glad I watched this series. Mainly cause I love anything that takes the piss out of Christianity. It’s a stop frame animation using models, kind of like Thomas the tank engine crossed with South Park. Or did you ever see Bobby the Bus on the Suzy Cato show? Well you get the idea. Apparently there was a Christian kids show called Davey and Goliath, and this is kind of a rip on the style of that. Orel is a Christian boy who tries to do everything by the way of the lord, but more often than not ends up getting it a bit wrong. He gets hooked on crack, digs up a dead body, gets the kids in his class into drinking urine, commits euthanasia and gets his dick pierced, all in the name of god. Cool eh. The crack episode fucking RULZ. He gets a job to learn the importance of money, or some shit, and then gives his pay to a homeless dude who then gets him addicted to crack. He then beats up his boss for money and donates blood to keep up his habit! Ahaha If you want this on DVD burn a bible and email me your name + address to iwantadvdumduh@gmail.com
