Music subscription service provider Spotify has launched in New Zealand as anyone with a Facebook page will know. It’s been the talk of the town ever since the launch last week with punters having their say and dissecting the service across all social media platforms, further proving Spotify’s own mantra that the digital life is the one we’re all living, so why should’t that be reflected musically? Read more about the subscription service on page 6.

Waterfront Theatre Gets Green light

The Auckland Council has confirmed its support of the 600-seat waterfront theatre development by maintaining its budget allocation of $10 million in the Long Term Plan. While Auckland does have many smaller theatres and studios around the CBD, the new development will be one that aims to push the city’s cultural value along with the reinvention of the Auckland waterfront. The Auckland Theatre Company is delighted with the outcome of the council’s $21.7million pledge of the $35million fundraising target. The ATC is actively pursuing other funding avenues to fill the gap, with the next report back on progress to Auckland Council happening in September.

18/07 NZ Film Festival Announcements

Seven of the films that will be screening at this year’s New Zealand International Film Festival have been announced. While there are still plenty more to come, so far we know that the festival will feature: Frederick Wiseman’s titular documentary kaleidoscopic cinematic romp about French cabaret club Crazy Horse; Lynn Shelton’s misunderstanding coming-of-age funny drama Your Sister’s Sister starring Emily Blunt and Mark Duplass; Kevin Macdonald’s longawaited ‘authorised’ documentary on Marley; Jack Black’s unfamiliar role as a closeted Texan in Bernie directed by Richard Linklater; the competitive expose on the ins and outs of professional ballet in Bess Kargman’s First Position; Lee Hirsch’s ultimate provocative documentary Bully which explores the all-toofamiliar and in some cases potentially fatal notion of bullying in American highschools; and Amy Berg’s investigation of the infamous three Arkansas teenagers convicted for murdering three eight year old boys known as the West Memphis Three in the chilling West of Memphis. The New Zealand International Film Festival launches in Auckland on Thursday 19 July before heading around the country – see nzff.co.nz for more details.

Ladyhawke Dates Added

Ladyhawke has added two shows to her upcoming tour. Previously only Auckland and Wellington dates were announced, but Dunedin and Christchurch dates have now been added as well as touring support act Auckland duo She’s So Rad. Dunedin’s Union Hall will host on Wednesday 11 July before the Christchurch show at the UCSA Events Centre on Thursday 12 July.

Lady Gaga has cancelled her one Indonesian performance of the Born This Way Ball due to threats from extremist groups. Apparently the Islamic Defenders Front thinks the eccentric singer is in cahoots with the devil and promised they would get violent in one way or another if the singer continued to “corrupt” the nation’s youth. Two weeks into hormone replacement therapy, Against Me! singer Tommy Gabel has made her live debut as Laura Jane. The now frontwoman played a 40 minute set in San Diego last week following the singer’s plans to begin living as a woman which was reported in early May. While hanging out at the merch table with her wife, Heather after the show Grace told Rolling Stone “I was worried that some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something.” Liam Gallagher’s latest fun scuffle is with Echo And The Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch. The former Oasis/current Beady Eye/consistently entertaining singer tweeted “Ian McCulloch you wanna watch what your [sic] saying about my lyrics or I will come and tattoo them on your forehead ! LG”. It’s not yet clear exactly what McCulloch said to upset Gallagher, but it doesn’t take much to set the diva (he-va?) off. 1990s heart-throb River Phoenix will be returning to the screen in a comeback beyond the grave. Academy Award-nominated director George Sluizer has taken the footage from his unreleased film Dark Blood out of hiding nearly 20 years after production was halted due to Phoenix’s infamous death at The Viper Room in Los Angeles. Energy drink V has teamed up with music producer Joel Little of Goodnight Nurse and Kids of 88 fame to explore the visual arts realm and create a piece of music using body movement. While we’re not really sure what that actually means and if it’s even possible, the V Motion Project team are sure they’ve got something up their sleeve that can make this magic work. Follow the webisodical documentary at v.co.nz.

Shit Worth Knowing

groove file Spotify Launches in NZ TIM RIPPER OWENS

Who’s in the dead supergroup for your dream hologram show? Dime, Ronnie Dio, Entwislte, Cozy Powel. What’s an upcoming film you’re jazzed about? Not really any… I’m not even sure of what’s coming out… Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? When home I’m hanging with the family… my kids always have something going on. What happens when you mix Coca Cola with Pepsi? You lose your fingers. Your fantasy spirit animal is… What the hell does this mean? Your signature “I’m an amazing cook” dish is… Anything on the grill. Love to cook on that! The best TV show around at the moment is… I love Modern Family. Great show. The best place for a date night is… I don’t know... haven’t been on a date in a long time. If I remember right, it was The Melting Pot in Ohio.

Listeners around the country were treated last week to the launch of on-demand subscription service and music provider Spotify. Late last year the word went out that the music provider would be launching, and it couldn’t have come at a better time with all of the Internet police chasing after anyone and everyone who is trying to download anything for free. Spotify is described as “...your new music collection. Your library. Only this time your collection is vast: millions of tracks and counting. Spotify comes in all shapes and sizes, available for your PC, Mac, home audio system and mobile phone. Wherever you go, your music follows you.” Anyone with a Facebook account will have seen the updates of what your friends are listening to, and as far as the uptake on the service goes, the biggest whinge we’ve heard is that users feel uncomfortable with Spotify notifying their friends what you’re listening to. It’s a little harder to get your guilty pleasure fix when it’s being broadcast on your timeline, so you might have to stop pretending that you don’t like the new Nicki Minaj track. There are three separate subscription options available with three payment options. One is free and allows listeners to browse the entire catalogue available with the online service from your computer. The cheapest payment option is $7.49 per month and gives you access to Spotify’s radio mode, as well as not having to be put through ads while you’re using the service. The most expensive option is $12.99 a month and gives you access to all of Spotify’s services including playing songs from your mobile, accessing your playlists offline on both your computer and phone, and allows you to play Spotify through other music systems. You can read more about the service and get

familiar with it all at spotify.com/nz. Yes, there are other services like Spotify that have been around for a while, and yes, it’s not as if Spotify is a revolutionary concept. But it is one that has been utilised around the world and has a relatively good repertoire from music labels who are a big factor in how online content is being distributed and provided. Labels know that people stream and download for free, and if this is the new system of the future that the technological age utilises then it’s best to stop fighting it and learn how to work with it. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. What this means for New Zealand is that we finally have a large scale, mainstream music provider as a subscription service that rivals the iTunes way of purchasing music. Many people have to come to terms with the fact that downloading copyrighted content is illegal and you can get fined some hefty penance for breaking the law. Downloading music (as well as films, television shows and other content) for free has become a generational thing that both the savvy and layman consumer has become adjusted to, but there’s only so long people can get away with that in this social and economic environment. Whether or not people will go for it and realise the fact that this kind of business model may be one of the ways of the future in terms of record labels and music distribution, only time will tell on that front.

You’d get arrested if the police knew that you… Mixed Coke and Pepsi. People say you look like… I never really heard anyone before, maybe Eddie Murphy. Five celebs on your f**klist? Man that is tough. Alyssa Milano is one, Pink, not sure who else. Kittens or puppies? I don’t like either.

Waihi Beach Hotel

Flow

Born Villain 9pm, $10-15, dashtickets.co.nz

8pm, $20-30, dashtickets.co.nz

How’s this for a date night – drive to Waihi, go see an acoustic set by Tiki Taane, stay warm with red wine and whiskey, walk along the beach after the show, do some kisses, cosy up at wherever you’re staying, get laid. You’re welcome.

You’ve got to hand it to the dubstep kids. No matter how much bagging on the genre that’s directed their way, the audience and acts themselves keep pressing on. They don’t care what you think. You’re old and you can’t dance. Loser.

What are Beach Pigs and Rackets teaming up for in Wellington? “Noisypop to bop-and-flop, history in the video-making.” So go along and feature in a video, then add it to your very empty LinkedIn profile.

Sunday 03 Festa Junina Britomart Country Club 2pm, FREE

Brazilian parties are the best parties. They have those big feathers and exotically dressed men and women wearing masks and looking like total babes. So when you’re all bummed out that it’s a Sunday and all you want to do is have another crack at Saturday, head to this. It’s like social foreplay.

From memory, a friend of mine went to see Ghostface last time he came, and she was super excited afterwards because he signed her boob. With any luck it’ll happen to her again and he can sign the other one.

6pm, $40

Canadian post-hardcore five-piece Silverstein play the second of their two shows at Zeal in West Auckland on Tuesday to an all ages crowd, following their Wellington show at Bar Medusa on Monday.

I must admit it was with some trepidation that I approached a new release from one of rock’s most gloriously reviled performers. It was well over a decade ago that Marilyn Manson’s shock-and-awe tactics carved him out an indelible place in music history; like some dark embodiment of the American psyche his arresting visual style, ear-splitting scream and grotesque charm carried him to superstardom in the late ‘90s. Yet Manson’s last two studio albums came close to self parody. The ideas were tepid, the lyrics at times awkward, and the “shock tactics” seemed to have lost any real purpose. For a man whose early career seemed to evoke the enthralling dance of a slow motion car crash, to see him fall into the cliché mediocrity of an aging rock star was a little saddening. However, Born Villain is a revitalising breath of fresh air that sees the iconic frontman returning to the gritty production values and devil-may-care arrogance that made albums like Antichrist Superstar so mesmerising. Far more multilayered and mature than recent efforts, Born Villain is shot through with Manson’s personality: charismatic, aggressive, and virulently hedonistic. Opening track ‘Hey, Cruel World’ is an arresting nail-you-to-the-wall

shot of energy that leaves you with high expectations for the rest of the album – expectations which, by and large, are met and sometimes exceeded. Lyrically, the album is personal and authentic, filled with metaphorical imagery of flowers and guns, much in keeping with Manson’s dark aesthetic. The songwriting partnership of Manson and Twiggy Ramirez seems to have taken a step forward on this album; a variety of styles are at play throughout, running from glam rock to industrial. Particular highlights are ‘The Gardener’ which has the lazy cool of Iggy Pop and evokes classic Manson tracks such as ‘Lunchbox’, and ‘Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms’ which has blues riffs heavy enough to form a black hole. There’s even a tongue-in-cheek cover of Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’ replete with Johnny Depp making a cameo on guitar. By the time ‘Breaking The Same Old Ground’ rolls around, the irony of that title becomes abundantly clear: this is Manson breaking out of the rut he dug for himself and going somewhere new. All in all, it’s a far cry from the immersive rock operas that gained Manson his devout following, but fans can at least rest assured he’s back on the right track. WRITTEN BY CLOVIS MCEVOY

Fairy Tail Collection 1 A Review by Harlequin Jones Fairy Tail is an anime about fuckin magic yo! Well, wizards n shit. Lucy Heartfilia is a young girl who thinks magic and wizard’s are super cool, and one day she meets a wizard called Natsu Dragneel, a boy who is on a mission to find his foster parent, a dragon. No shit! Once she finds out that he is part of this wizard club called Fairy Tail she goes traveling with him and joins the club too! Natsu has a really cute flying cat thing that follows him around everywhere called Happy. The Fairy Tail wizard club, or ‘guild’ I think they call it, is a bunch of magic people who drink heaps and fight each other, but they also go and work jobs for people, like killing monsters and stop evil illegal wizard clubs using their super magic powers. If I were a wizard I would make a spell that cooks for me or have some flying shoes or some shit. A flying cat would be rad too. THURSDAY 31 What To Expect When You’re Expecting

TRISHNA

General release

There are heaps of films about chicks getting pregnant and freaking out about it. But it takes two to tango, and dudes actually freak out about babies as well. This semi-interesting flick has a great cast accompanied by what looks like a range of predictable jokes. With any luck, Human Giant’s Rob Huebel can save it.

Last Will

[Rec]3: Genesis

Selected Cinemas

General release

Alright, it’s another Swedish crime drama. Those Swedes really know how to do tension and drama with a strong female character as the lead. If you’re a fan of a certain tattooed female franchise, you’ll be excited for this.

Spanish horror movie meets wedding gone wrong meets zombies in the third installment of the [Rec] franchise. It’s all leading up to the forthcoming [Rec] Apocalypse, which we can only imagine is a documentary style Day of the Dead.

FRIDAY 01 Paul Merton In Europe Prime, 8:30pm

Comedian Paul Merton sets his sights on discovering the wonders of modern Europe in this new series. In the first episode the funnyman meets the leader of a political movement known as the Apple Front, plays chess boxing, studies giant bunny breeding and samples naked bowling before experiencing some kind of bizarre spa.

Further info directed by MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM Starring FREIDA PINTO, RIZ AHMED AND ANURAG KASHYAP

British director Michael Winterbottom is known for his versatility – his repertoire including A Mighty Heart, 24 Hour Party People and the controversially sexual 9 Songs. Once again he throws viewers into another world, transporting Thomas Hardy’s Tess Of The d’Urbevilles into present-day India. Tess becomes Trishna, played by Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto, whose striking beauty is her character’s greatest gift and curse. Winterbottom cleverly twists a Victorian fable of power and exploitation into a thoroughly modern and tragic love story. If Slumdog and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are tour guide movies, Trishna goes off the beaten track, spanning India’s poor and wealthy from the hard-living rural life of the protagonist’s roots in Rajasthan

to the glossy, kitsch Bollywood world she finds herself drawn to in Mumbai. Trishna’s identity fluctuates throughout as she navigates her way from labourer to glamorous city-dweller to servant, and Pinto plays the character with strength and humility, despite the increasingly degrading things she’s subjected to. When life doesn’t pan out as expected, there’s a moment that feels lost and what happens next is forced. Using a naturalistic style that almost lends it a documentary feel, Trishna drags its way through the first hour and steams through the second. As the drama begins to develop, it’s moving but jarring, as though panic has set in. The result is a film that is intoxicating, emotional and exhausting. You’ll feel like you’ve been to India and back. WRITTEN BY REBECCA BARRY HILL, FLICKS.CO.NZ

MONDAy 04 MTV Movie Awards

screen.yahoo.com/burning-love

MTV, Sky Channel 14

Hot damn if this doesn’t look like this could be one of the funniest web series we’ve ever heard of. Fans of Children’s Hospital and Party Down will find this more appealing than anyone else, with an incredibly talented cast featuring Ken Marino, Adam Scott, Michael Ian Black, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, June Diane Raphael, Paul Scheer, Ben Stiller and more. A parody of reality television shows in the same vein as The Bachelor, Burning Love follows a fireman looking for love in all the right places. What could go wrong? Hopefully everything with this cast and crew behind it. We can’t stress how high our expectations are of this show – get online and start streaming with the premiere airing early next week.

Yep, it’s that time again when the Oscars for kids manage to actually get good talent on the show. If the industry wank and pretention was taken out of the Academy Awards and replaced by cheap marketing tactics and jokes, it would be the MTV Movie Awards. But it’s actually fun to watch, so whatever.

Maybe you’re thinking that royalty isn’t your buzz and you’d rather celebrate another country that’s not in the Commonwealth. If you haven’t been to Mexico yet you’re a damn fool. Tequila is classy and elegant while still giving you a boost of bratty energy, Sangria comes in a giant jug and the food at Mexico is spicier than the dancing love child of Salma Hayek and Ricky Martin.

Kick off Queens Birthday weekend at Snapdragon where two levels of party come together for one night of mayhem. That kind of mayhem you want to be a part of where people all look sexy and have fun, not rioting mayhem. On Friday 01 June DJ’s P Money, Dan Aux, Jason Eli and Normski will be playing on both levels of Snapdragon until late where you can grab three Beck’s beers for $20 to share with your mates. Free entry before 10pm.

‘Like’ Chapel Bar & Bistro’s Facebook page this week and go in the draw to win a trip to Las Vegas for you and a friend in association with grabaseat. You and your buddy could be partying Vegas style all thanks to the good folks at Chapel. Get on it quick, the competition will be drawn Friday 08 June. Terms and conditions apply, see the Chapel Bar & Bistro Facebook page for more info.

shit we went to

live reviews DIMMER/ BEASTWARS Bodega, Wellington Sat 26 May

And so it’s goodbye. 18-odd years of goosebump-inducing indie rock has come to an end. There’s no mucking around or social niceties when support act Beastwars take to the stage. That Motorhead-meetsNZ-power-rock sound blasts into full-effect, maintaining its ferocious intent for the entirety of their just-under-an-hour set. And hello, here he is. Shayne Carter leads his merry troupe onstage, with little in the way of fanfare or general acknowledgement. Like Beastwars, Dimmer leap straight to it. Initially it takes people by surprise, with Carter already in that trance-like fugue that overtakes him during performances. There’s a brief respite while Carter stops to say hello, then it’s back to work once more as the band launches into slightly sinister track ‘Dark Night Of Yourself’ before moving swiftly into ‘Degrees Of Existence,’ played at a cracking pace as the band begin to embrace their own excitement. A funkier-than-usual version of ‘I Believe You Are A Star’ follows, and songs begin to flow by with increasing intensity. ’Cold Water’ stands out with an angrylooking Carter taking his lyrical stick to reviewers: “Benchsitter, hair-splitter, cold water...” ‘Scrapbook’ is even better, with that portentous build leading into some pissed-off, cataclysmic chugging riffs. The set is eventually capped by a powerful take on iconic Carter classic ‘Seed’. Those guitars rule once more, locked in a coituslike amalgamation, backed by a driving bassline from youngster Vaughan Williams who sees us home to a glorious, first-set ending. After a minimal break we get the final short but oh-sosweet encore, then it really is the end, with a blistering version of ‘Crystalator’ bringing the curtain down on Dimmer, for the very last time. THE way of the monster WRITTEN BY Josh Ling

Monsters Unite: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball comes to our shores next week. Josh Ling takes a look at what the audience is in for at Auckland’s Vector Arena. Love her or hate her, Stefani Germanotta (AKA Lady Gaga) is undeniably one of the most eye-catching phenomena of the last decade. After all, she’s recently been featured on The Simpsons. And that’s when you know you’ve made it, right? Whether she’s garbed top-to-toe in a meat dress at the MTV VMAs (you should’ve seen how scared Eminem was) or screaming, “Obama, I know you’re listening!” at a gay rights rally, there’s one thing you can’t deny: Mama Monster knows how to turn heads.

With hundreds of awards and five Grammys under her belt, the pop supernova will be performing award-winning tracks ranging from The Fame, The Fame Monster and the latest album Born This Way. Long-time collaborator Fernando Garibay sums it up: “This album was the most personal because of the amount of the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team. Every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme. We’re excited now, putting that into the tour and expressing that on a live performance level.”

Last here for a widely praised, sold-out tour in 2010, Lady Gaga is on her way back to our shores for the Born This Way Ball this June. This will be the artist’s follow-up circuit to the hit Monster Ball tour, boasting more extravagance, showmanship and spectacle than ever before. Count yourselves lucky, as the singer’s “provocative acts and costumes” led to a cancelled Indonesian circuit just this week due to security concerns in the Islamic state. Nonetheless, the entire tour spans further corners of the globe, more cities and more dates than anything else she’s ever taken on.

According to Gaga’s Twitter, the stage took months to build, and was modelled after a medieval Gothic castle – complete with viewing towers, intricate carvings and a large catwalk to interact with the audience. And if there wasn’t enough to look forward to already, Gaga’s been converting the central area of the concert into what she calls “The Monster Pit”. Diehard fans and those willing to tough out the wait in line (whilst dressed for the ball) have the chance to be picked for entry into this exclusive section. The first in line will be christened ‘Holder of the Monster Pit Key’ (which symbolically opens the Monster Pit for all the little monsters) and a select few will be chosen by the Haus of Gaga to go backstage and meet Mama Monster in person. So here’s our fingers... I mean, claws… crossed.

More than just a performance, Lady Gaga’s concerts have been known to be sheer masterpieces of showbiz. With frequent outfit changes (ranging from the bedazzled to the bizarre), heavily talented backup dancers and a symphony of lasers and lights, this superstar’s shows are a sight to behold. “The Haus of Gaga and I have worked for months conceiving a spectacular stage,” says the pop star. “The Born This Way Ball is an Electro-MetalPop-Opera; the tale of the Beginning, the genesis of the Kingdom of Fame. How we were birthed and how we will die celebrating.”

Blacklistt WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER

With a new name – but with a noticeably similar logo and sound to former incarnation Blindspott – Blacklistt lead singer Damian Alexander can’t wait to get back on the road. It’s been too long, five years to be exact, since the boys properly toured the country since Blindspott’s 2007 farewell tour. “You get to see all your fans on Facebook, but when you get down there you have this vision of who they are and what they are like but it is different to actually meet them, that’s the fun bit – and performing,” laughs Damian. Blindspott pioneered a new type of sound at a time when no one was doing anything like it – a DJ in a rock band? It was a crazy concept. But their signature sound, with chart-topping singles including ‘Phlex’, ‘Room to Breathe’ and ‘Nil by Mouth’, showed they were to be taken seriously. But like many bands before them, Blindspott was also subjected to publicised fall-outs within the band that led to a heated split in 2007. Their most public dispute was over the name – a dispute that became a court saga. Former drummer Shelton Woolright claimed a stake in the name in 2011, and took legal action to bar the four remaining members from playing under that title. A year later, the issue is unresolved and Blacklistt was born. “There was never any progress from the beginning,” explains Damian. “It’s just one of those things that we fought as much as we could, but at the end of the day the law states certain things that became a real nightmare.” While he is open about the events, Damian is clearly saddened that the legal dramas inside a courtroom detracted from their work on stage. He says being dragged into the name battle was draining; especially when the band was something they had “poured our heart and soul into for ten years”. Their name may have changed, but the sound is as distinct as it has ever been. Damian muses that in hindsight, the second album wasn’t as “natural” as the debut, but acknowledges that the new music is a return to form. “We don’t fight what comes naturally. The first record we did that was something that was natural and this is the same. We’re not thinking about anything but writing music –like how will we market it or who will this speak to, fuck that. We just want to write the music we want to write.” Their songs have already received a dynamic response. Damian says fans have posted on their Facebook wall, or messaged them, talking about how the songs have given them strength and helped them out. And at the end of the day, Damian says it’s that kind of response that makes it all worth fighting for. SEE THEM LIVE: BLACKLISTT See Tours & EVENTS

LadyHawke WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER

After a long wait, London-based Kiwi singer Ladyhawke is enjoying the thrill of music again something she thought she had lost. It was doing what she loved that proved to be her undoing. Non-stop touring for two years on the back of her successful debut album Ladyhawke from 2008, Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke, was burnt out and in need of some solid downtime. Ladyhawke is very candid and open about her exhaustion. She realises it was a difficult time, the result of some extreme overworking. Her snyth-heavy, chart-topping hits had given her the opportunity to travel from North American to Europe, winning award after award. But by the time she came to round two, she didn’t even want to hear a single note. “All I wanted to do is sleep all the time. It wasn’t like me,” she explains. “I couldn’t think. I felt oversaturated with music – I didn’t want to hear the radio or play a CD in my car – I was over it.” Five months’ rest and recuperation later though, Ladyhawke was back. The time off was exactly what she needed to get back in the studio to begin recording her highly anticipated sophomore album Anxiety. A fitting title, perhaps, for a singer who confesses she felt increased pressure to perform. “I started to overthink it,” she says. “People would say, ‘Working on the second album is tough.’ It became difficult because I started to build it up in my own head.” It’s clear that Ladyhawke is now anxiety-free and feeling relaxed. She says catching up with friends and playing video games helped her get through the dark five months. And when her love of listening to music returned, she knew it was time to write again. “I had to get to the point that I was chomping at the bit to make music,” she says. “I recorded most of the album in the South of France with Pascal Gabriel. It was amazing; he lives in a village with 500 people, in a 2000-year-old tower with the studio at the top. “It was good for me – no distractions. The silence was deafening. No TV, nothing. Just music.” Her first single, ‘Black, White & Blue’, harks back to her Kiwi roots and marks a shift in her sound. Lyrically, she acknowledges that the album was written in “a different headspace, opening up a lot of truths and a lot of storytelling”. “[‘Black, White & Blue’] is sort of a reality check song. You should be empowered, but when you have moments when you doubt yourself, looking up at the sky its sort of reminded me the universe is huge and I’m so tiny and insignificant that I should get over my problems, that’s how it is to me,” she laughs. Mario Tennis Open is the latest title from Japanese game developer Camelot. Like most Mario sports titles, Mario Tennis Open lets you play as any one of the gang of Mario characters, with an option to play as your own “Mii” character if you prefer. The gameplay is pretty straightforward: manoeuvre your character to the right spot on the court, then choose from a variety of different shots (like a lob, drop shot, slice, topspin or flat shot). There’s also a simple shot, but if you want to do well, you’ll need to learn the more complex options. The game also sports a few mini games, which vary from more traditional tennis subtypes to some that are only possible in a Mario game. A good example of the latter is one where you actually play a game of Super Mario Bros. by hitting tennis balls against a wall. While Mario Tennis Open certainly has a lot going for it, including a good theme and great production values, ultimately there wasn’t really enough to keep me riveted to the game for long periods of time. One for the fans only. WRITTEN BY JESS NICKELSEN

What happens if you release a role playing game set in a mythical medieval land of swords, spell casting, and fire breathing dragons? People will straight away start comparing you to last year’s smash hit, Skyrim. But, and there is a very big but here, what you find when you get past all the preconceptions, is that Dragon’s Dogma is a pretty awesome game. It doesn’t have a lot in terms of inventive storytelling, but the combat – which lets you clamber all over the backs of enemy monsters – is visceral and fun. There’s also a deep character creation system, which lets you create not only your own avatar but also a companion that will join you in your adventures. Further, this extra character can travel over the Internet and go questing with others, bringing extra experience back with him when he returns. It’s not multiplayer, but it is pretty cool. It could do with some polish but if you like the sound of something a bit different, and can handle a diamond in the rough, it’s well worth a look. WRITTEN BY DENE BENHAM

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Fashion and personal sense of style is born of interpretation of do’s and don’ts. With Egoist you can make your own rules. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Beau Brummell, the original dandy. He established the mode of men wearing understated (but fitted) beautifully-cut clothes, and was credited with introducing and establishing as fashion the modern man’s suit, worn with a tie. He claimed five hours to dress, and recommended that boots be polished with champagne. What muso/celebrity has style out the wazoo? You have got to admit that David Bowie is the MAN. He was never afraid to break boundaries, and his influence on fashion is just one of the great things about him!

Dusty Olive Stormbreaker By Wrangler

Say Hello to the Stormbreaker and goodbye to itchy wool. Features cute in-built gloves for chilly winter days.

Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Wearing too much black. Black is COOL, as long as it is not mixed with MORE BLACK! Mix it with other colours! Don’t be safe!

RRP NZ $189.90 wrangler.com.au

What’s the must-have look this winter? A touch of neon. If you’re too scared, start with a belt, shoes or even shoelaces.

WIKI SWEATS By Rage

Intended for comfort or athletic purposes, these are quite baggy and loose, making them perfectly easy to slip in and out of. SHORTS - $159 SLEVELESS HOODED VEST - $139 egoist.co.nz

Commuter Pants By Levi

With a reinforced crotch to protect you and your pants from the strains of bike riding. The inside seam has reflective tape to keep you a bit safer on the road. RRP $149.90 Levis.co.nz

Colours/patterns big this season? Try a black and white “chessboard” check. Matching and mixing patterns is a game of colour and scale, and the strategy for winning results is to coordinate the former and contrast the latter. What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? A decent shirt, knit, dress pants, jeans, tees, socks, belt and jacket. What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? A shirt, skirt, dress, coat, dress pants, jeans and tees. Everyone should own at least one good… Pair of jeans. They are so versatile. Three words to describe Egoist’s style: Diverse, daring, and unique.
