In Brief...

Brews Cruise

Chris Brown and Drake may or may not have gotten into a scuffle in New York last week. The two r’n’b sensations reportedly came to confrontation on Wednesday 13 June when the two started arguing over Rihanna who they have both had relationships with. Brown’s people claimed that Drake threw a bottle his way, resulting in Brown posting a picture of his gashed chin on Twitter and having a go at Drake’s crew. Drake has denied his involvement in the brawl that erupted. The news gets juicier with the report that a woman has claimed she was injured during the fight. Lucy Pavlovsky suffered a gash to her arm requiring 12 stitches and may try to sue one or both of the stars.

The Auckland Zinefest is back, but things are a little different this time around. Zinefest will be partnering with First Thursdays on K Road in August. One of the organisers told us the theme is DIY, so no mass production zines are allowed. If they exist. Zinefest will have the usual zine market inside St Kevin’s Arcade and the craft market by Foxes will move across the road for this one instance. The Auckland Public Library is also getting on board, bringing a selection of their zine collection for display. More information is to come as well as further announcements concerning pop-up workshops. Head to aucklandzinefest.org or kroad. com for more information.

Following their number one chart debut, successful disorderly 48-hour album release party, and controversial Pop-Up Store on Ponsonby Road in Auckland, the three-headed misfit beast that is Home Brew have announced they’ll be taking their show on the road in July before heading to Australia to woo (or say fuck you to) crowds. Accompanied by their sevenpiece band as well as DJ Substance, Home Brew’s Speakeasy tour will hit six venues around the country as the beatmakers play in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Queenstown, Dunedin and Christchurch. See the tours pages for dates and venues.

We also do this cool social media stuff. @GrooveGuide facebook.com/grooveguide

Rumours are suggesting that The Rolling Stones live performance at Glastonbury 2013 will be their final live show ever. While it’s nothing new that Mick Jagger and crew say that they’re calling it quits, next year will be The Rolling Stones 50th anniversary. Could the five decade milestone see the band stop performing live?

Great Job!

For the first time, seemingly out of nowhere, Tim and Eric from [adult swim]’s Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! have announced a New Zealand show in October. The American sketch comedians have performed alongside some of the finest comedic talent around today making guest appearances on shows, cameos in movies and of course having a plethora of comedians appear on their own show, not to mention the recently released Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie. The live show has previously been performed in the US and UK, and now Kiwi audiences are lucky enough to see the duo’s notorious nutty antics. Tim and Eric will play at Auckland’s Powerstation on Saturday 06 October. Tickets go on sale Friday 22 June through Ticket Master.

Bailterspace Announce Return

Kiwi yesteryear alt-rock icons Bailterspace have announced they’ll be releasing a new album after a 13 year hiatus. Pitchfork loves them, music snobs love them and the layman loves them, so the amount of excitement across Facebook and Twitter was no surprise when the news hit last week that Bailterspace founding members Alister Parker (The Gordons) and Hamish Kilgour (The Clean) along with the rest of the gang would be releasing the new effort Strobosphere. The album will be released in August through Arch Hill Recordings in New Zealand and Australia and through Fire Records in America and Europe. The band’s latest single ‘No Sense’ is available at archhillrecordings.bandcamp.com.

KIMBRA COMEBACK

The Auckland University Students Association has announced that Kimbra will be playing her first New Zealand show since storming the charts in the US alongside fellow heavyweights The Black Seeds, Mt Eden, Ruby Frost and Vandalism. This massive line-up and extremely rare opportunity is being held at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Saturday 28 July, and tickets are only $20 for University of Auckland students. If you’re not a student at Auckland University, you can still buy tickets for $65 through Ticket Master. More info can be found at ausa.org.nz.

PLAYING Goodnight Kiwi (Television) FAVourites DAHNU GRAHAM ACTOR

Who’s in the dead supergroup for your dream hologram show? A Hologram show wouldn’t cut the mustard for me, especially one of my heroes. Maybe Sam Cooke If I had to name one. Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? Having breakfast on Karangahape Rd, a friend’s flat or somewhere with sun. At night, Whammy and the Wine cellar always have live music – always good to catch up with friends at the shows there. Your fantasy spirit animal is… Haku, in dragon form from Spirited Away. Your signature “I’m an amazing cook” dish is… Boil up. The best TV show around at the moment is… Game of Thrones has been off the hook! You’d get arrested if the police knew that you… Stole heaps of stuff from this… Smashed this fulla outside… Sparked up a… outside their office. Yeah, I’d be buggered if knew that… Five celebs on your f**klist? Marion Cotillard. This is a one of those trick questions aye! I’ll stop there.

Back when Freeview was just the little digital television service provider that could, there was channel called TVNZ 7. TVNZ 7 was set up along with other government funded channels as an enticing piece of the package to get people keen on the idea of setting up their digital television top box sooner rather than later. Time came and went. Soon it came time to flick the switch from analogue to digital television regardless of whether people had their top boxes or not. This happened to be the same year that TVNZ 7 would receive no more funding from the government – instead the powers that be have decided that folks on the Gold Coast and other such GC slappers should receive funding in place of cultural and informative programming. Well, maybe it’s not that black and white. Television is a business, and businesses need to make money. If TVNZ 7 isn’t making money, investors aren’t going to put their capital into it. That’s strategy 101. You might not like it, but that’s the way the world works. But just because something’s broken doesn’t mean you stop trying to fix it, right? While you and your friends might say it’s unfair, it’s also on you and your friends to watch TVNZ 7 and the programming on those shows to make it a viable outlet of ratings. Don’t be one of the people saying that you support TVNZ 7 but in reality you’ve only ever watched one documentary about the aurora borealis 12 months ago. If you don’t have Freeview then it’s not on you – you can’t really watch TVNZ 7. You could if you had Sky, but you’re probably watching SoHo, the crime channel or Comedy Central instead. The problem is, now that you have to have a digital television service provider if you want to keep watching the box, you’re going to miss

out on what TVNZ 7 was providing anyway. You won’t know what you could have had until it’s long gone. When the impending and almost set in stone cancellation of TVNZ 7 happens, New Zealand will no longer have any public service free-to-air channels. With the closure of TVNZ 7 set for Saturday 30 June, a campaign is in full force to Save TVNZ 7 before it’s too late. Thursday 28 June will see a protest march from the Welington Civic Square in the capital to the Beehive where supporters of the cause will present the Save TVNZ 7 petition to parliament. Ahead of that protest there are public meetings being held around Auckland organised by the people at Save TVNZ 7 (run by TVNZ 7 viewers and fans, not by TVNZ 7 themselves). If you want to support the cause, see what the panelists (including politicians and specialists from a variety of areas) have to say or you just want to hear people shout a lot because you like Back Benches, meetings will be held at the Milford Bowling Club on Auckland’s North Shore on Friday 22 June; the Orewa Community Centre on Sunday 24 June; the Wiri Community Hall in South Auckland on Monday 25 June; and at the Oratia Settlers Hall on Tuesday 26 June.

Wunderbar, Lyttelton

gig OF THE WEEK

7pm, FREE

We’ve been putting The Raw Nerves in here pretty much every time they have something on. You know why? Because they are that good. It’s not easy to combine an original garage rock sound and at the same time throw in some sing-along vocals that have you doo-wopping along, but this foursome of misfits do it well.

The US Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band will be giving a public performance at Hagley Park’s Geo Dome as part of the Marine Corps Band’s NZ tour to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of US Forces landing in NZ during WWII. Men in uniform? Totally hot, apparently. Army music? Surprisingly full of wicked percussion.

Full disclosure: there’s no real way to tell what you’re in for if you go to a massive Bollywood party for the first time. But you know how in the movies they do lots of choreographed dance but way better than some Channing Tatum piece of shit? It’s kinda like that.

I made a joke about putting some Goodshirt on the stereo then put my nicest shirts on the stereo. It didn’t go down very well at my flat. Especially since they weren’t even nice shirts. They were Mambo ones. But apparently Hawaiian shirts are in fashion now. True story.

TOUR

With four studio records, a myriad of other works and sabbatical projects, the Hot Chip lads have taken a leap to album five. When it comes to career progression, Hot Chip aren’t exactly renowned for taking huge risks. Their music grows at a snail’s pace (Aesop would surely have listened to Hot Chip) – not by reason of any impediment, but because they’re true to their convictions. A variety of musical tastes seep through their work, as well as a ska-like sense of irony. While that may not be unique at all, the delivery is. For all the critical adversity their discography has faced there is no denying Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard and co. know what they’re doing. Pigeon holding is a fun critic game (the term “hipster-house” is being passed about like a hooker at the moment) and for all its comprehensible worth, genre play doesn’t apply to Hot Chip. In Our Heads is proof of their continuing genre-bending. The first songs in the public realm dabble in the dirty sounds of post-grunge industrial. ‘Night & Day’ has a particularly Reznoresque bass line and for what it’s worth the video is worth a watch just for the homoerotic half-naked men lip sync-rapping to Taylor. ‘Flutes’ is a prosaic trance, captivating and sublime in every sense, with Taylor’s

vocals carrying the story of some kind of relationship strain. ‘Don’t Deny Your Heart’ resuscitates the sounds of Van Halen into something that really is okay to listen to. ‘Motion Sickness’ is the album’s king of synths – it’s a dramatic and powerful opener. Not only does it perfectly showcase a plethora of layers, but it instantly reminds the listener that while it’s fun, they’re not fucking around. The celebrated and deliberated ironic cynicism of lyrical Hot Chip has matured; it’s less pronounced but very present. They’ve been in the game for over 10 years so it’s not really surprising news – what is, though, is that there seems to be a domesticated approach. ‘How Do You Do’ is an example of a perceptively cynical take on marriage, with quips like “your heart is not for breaking, it’s for beating out all the life in me”. In Our Heads is an ambient journey through an acoustically eclectic landscape that, for all its electro-faux beginnings, feels like genuine handcrafted music. Hot Chip, kudos. Coicent is a short anime film about this boy called Shinichi who is on a school trip to the city, when a crazy white deer grabs his bag and he’s chasing it round and you know, drama. Meanwhile a girl who is some kind of robot or some shit, I dunno, she escapes from the place she is being held, or maybe it’s where she was created. Anyway she escapes and Shinichi meets her while chasing this deer. He helps her avoid these cray cray people who are trying to catch her. Super cute characters especially the deer. Five Numbers is the second part of the DVD and the animation is sort of 3D. These people all wake up in a spaceship prison type thing and can’t figure out how the fuck to get out of it. There’s some old man on board who knows why they are all stuck there, etc etc. It manages to tell a pretty good story for a 25 minute film. If you want this on DVD recommend a cool anime to me with ur name + address to iwantadvdumduh@gmail.com

THURSDAY 21 Brave

The Well-Digger’s Daughter

General Release

Pixar is back with an original story that has us hoping it’ll be a little bit more Incredibles than Cars. Nine times out of 10, Pixar strikes gold with their touching movies. This adventure tale focuses on a wee Scottish lass who wants to be a warrior. A familiar story arc, but Pixar’s outputs are never just another story.

Further info directed by DANIEL AUTEUIL Starring DANIEL AUTEUIL, KAD MERAD AND SABINE AZÉMA

Snow White & The Huntsman General Release

Apparently heaps of people can’t stand Kristen Stewart. I don’t get that. “She wears chucks and eye make up and she’s just trying to look like a typical indie chick,” they say. Shouldn’t you want grounded celebrities? Whatever. Leave the girl alone. Also Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron star in this Snow White battle epic.

Safe General Release

Say what you want about action movies. Yes, the bullets should have run out. Yes, explosions would hurt people more. Yes, he did just kill 50 people without getting shot. But it’s an action movie! Jason Statham gets it, hence why he’s the latest action movie star. And he’s awesome, even if this one is a crime thriller.

True Blood Prime, 9:40pm

French actor Daniel Auteuil was catapulted to stardom in movie adaptations of Marcel Pagnol’s novels Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. The WellDigger’s Daughter is Auteuil’s directorial debut and a remake of Marcel Pagnol’s 1940 movie of the same name. Auteuil plays Pascal, a hard-working widower, devoted to his six daughters. In essence this is a simple story of a poor well-digger’s daughter (Patricia Amoretti) who falls in love with a rich pilot (Jaques Mazel), but the wonder is in the telling and the delights in the detail. Set in wartime Provence, Auteuil’s precise direction ensures that not a moment of drama, romance or comedy is lost in a beautifully crafted tale that, bar the final scenes, succeeds in shirking maudlin sentimentality. That’s largely due to a superb cast,

in which Astrid Bergès-Frisbey shines as Auteuil’s muchmaligned daughter, Patricia. This is a gentle film that nonetheless has a great deal to say about class, honour, loyalty and love in portraying a feud between two families juxtaposed against the events of World War I. The score, by Alexandre Desplat, is the perfect accompaniment to the lush cinematography of JeanFrancois Robin which captures the Provence countryside in all its vibrant colour and natural glory Plotwise, it may all wrap up a bit too feel-good and trite for some. Soppy ending aside, Auteuil delivers a fine slice of essential French cinematic delight – dramatic, funny, moving and tragic by turns. WRITTEN BY ADAM FRESCO, FLICKS.CO.NZ

MONDAY 24 V Motion Project

The fifth season of the sexiest sexy vampire television show returns to Prime this week. The new season introduces a whole new wave of otherworldly characters including vampire guardians, the vampire authority, vampire zealots and other sexy, bitey babes all trying to kill and screw each other.

v.co.nz

The V Motion Project has been running for around a month and Joel Little and crew are still on a mission to make a song using the body’s motoin as opposed to instruments. They think they can do it, and from the videos we’ve seen it looks like they just might be able to pull this piece of magic off.

BLU-RAY release

The live action adaptation of the classic anime is on FOUR this Friday. If you’re a fan of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, don’t watch this by any means as it will piss you off more than the 21 episodes it took to blow up Namek in five minutes. Or make it a drinking game – drink when you’re irritated. You’ll get wasted.

MEXICO

MULtiple locations, wagamama.co.nz

23 Britomart place, mexico.net.nz

When you were a kid your parents told you that sharing was good. Unless you were at an orphanage, where it was every kid for themselves. But sharing is cool. Enter Wagamama, the restaurant that encourages social eating in this social age of social media and social living. Share the love, share the food and dine on dumplings, yakitori, crispy spicy prawns, chilli squid and soy bean goodness. Wagamama has three restaurants in Auckland (Metropolis in the CBD, Nuffield St in Newmarket with a fancy cocktail bar and one at the Sylvia Park mega-complex) and one restaurant in Wellington at Queens Wharf.

Mexican food is all the rage. Whether it’s because New Zealanders like to say that we like spicy food or whether it’s because for whatever reason we’ve just had very few real Mexican restaurants for years, now that we’ve got such a plethora to choose from we’ve ended up spoiled for choice. Mexico in Britomart makes Mexican food and makes it well. Yeah, you can get burritos or whatever at any old place, but real Mexican food is different. It’s not fast food. And it comes with tequila and sangria and chilli beers, which in Mexican translates to “brat juice of kings” according to my Mexican friend Bender Bending Rodriguez.

Bringing it all back home Groove Guide talks to Goodshirt about time off, time away and time for reinvention.

It’s odd to think that it’s been six years since Goodshirt’s irrefutably catchy tunes were last dominating the NZ airwaves. The band shot to success in 2002 with their platinum-selling album Good, yet in 2005, with little fanfare, the band went on indefinite hiatus. Until now. Over the past few months, the reunited band have hit the ground running, playing a series of gigs around the country and releasing EP Skinny Mirror. So, with a nationwide release tour kicking off in Christchurch a few short days ago, the lads and I sat down over a beer to chat about the old times and new. After spending so long apart, how did you guys go about getting back into the swing of making music? Gareth: We went round to Murray’s house and just started jamming with the record button pressed on the computer really. And we didn’t really talk that much, just said, “Hi, it’s been awhile.” Just started playing. Actually, ‘So Charming,’ – the new single – came out of one of those very first jams. Rodney: We kind of got interested in each other’s songwriting again. We had a long enough break doing other things. It felt like something we all wanted to do, we just needed a positive push in the `right direction. It took a lot of people by surprise when you decided to put Goodshirt on hold in 2005. Could you tell me a bit about your decision to go on hiatus? Rodney: I don’t think we were really getting along in a very healthy way. I did some playing with Breaks Co-Op in New Zealand and then they got released by Parlophone Records in the UK. I just really wanted to go there and wanted to be involved in that next step for them, so then I stayed on for six years. It was kind of a forced break, but it gave Muz and Mike a chance to kind of do some stuff with Voom and Side Kick Nick. Gareth released his solo record in that time and I made solo record as well. There’s a real homegrown, authentically Kiwi sound to your earlier albums. How would you describe your sound on the new EP? Gareth: Ah, it wasn’t meant to sound like our other records… Rodney: But it ended up sounding like Goodshirt. Gareth: Yeah, it sounds like Goodshirt. We just approached it differently. We approached it in two ways; one was to just jam songs and ideas, just to see what happened. That was an interesting way to work. The other way was just to send stuff electronically over the Internet while Rodney was in England. We were in different countries so we built it up part by part, sending ideas backwards and forwards. Rodney: Throwing ideas on top of mixdowns, laying them out then deconstructing them and putting them back together. It’s a fun way to work. Gareth: We have like 50 or 60 songs in the Dropbox. It’s been a good ten years since Goodshirt shot to the top of the NZ music charts with ‘Sophie’. How did you guys originally form as a band? Rodney: Us three (Rod, Mike and Gareth), down at Murphy’s Irish bar. Gareth: We played Irish Music. We were a folk band. Rodney: Not really, we kind of pretended to be so we could get gigs at Irish pubs, ‘cause they paid really well. I don’t think I was old enough to be in the pub when I first joined that band. Gareth: So we played four nights a week for few years, then decided we wanted to write original music – so Goodshirt was formed.

Where did the name Goodshirt come from? Gareth: We were writing a list of band names and we decided all the good band names were taken so we were just coming up with really bad names. Rodney: We were almost Beetroot. Then we thought, most band names are shit anyway – so we should just choose one and as people get to know our music they’ll think of that band name as what that music is. Gareth: But at that point Rodney’s Dad came in and said, “That’s a good shirt you’re wearing.” It was a blue shirt and it said “Bob” on it. Rodney: Oh yeah, that one! That’s still my favourite shirt, actually. Gareth: So we wrote Goodshirt on the list and that was the only name that stayed on once we got through all the other really bad names. It was the least embarrassing one. What were some of the more embarrassing names? Gareth: Wasn’t there Squeal? Oh no, that was our jazz band… our jazz project. You both released solo albums recently. Did this help you to get back into the band mindset, or was the Goodshirt project already underway? Rodney: Yeah I think so, like I got all the wussy little pansy songs that I want to play out of the way. I feel too embarrassed to take them to Goodshirt anyway, so it’s like a vent to do my girly songs, and then Gareth’s got some girly songs as well. Gareth: Yeah I have some folky songs too. We’ve both got folky outlets, and then the electric songs go through Goodshirt. Rodney: I got more into arranging and stuff like that and wanting to develop that sort of side with the solo stuff, but Goodshirt feels like it’s about us four, so it’s not like the sort of band where you can get someone else to come and just be the drummer or just be the guitarist or whatever. So it only really exists when it’s us. We’re pretty special in that way. What are some of your favourite tracks on the new EP to either play or listen to? Gareth: I’m really pleased with the EP. It’s solid. Rodney: My favourite’s probably ‘I Can’t Drive’ actually. I really like it. I reworked it from a song Murray started writing ages ago. Gareth made up this chorus part for it, which kind of transformed it into a different song really. Gareth: Yeah, we sort of shared bits, like Murray would write versus, I did choruses. Can we expect a full-length album in the near future? Gareth: Ok, yeah. Rodney: Ok, just ‘cause you said so... haha. We want to do another EP quite soon. I reckon EPs are nicer, because you don’t have to get tied up in it being a giant statement or whatever.

Patti Smith Sixty Five-Year old Patti Smith is showing no sign of slowing down with her new release Banga.

Getting older is strange. It must be especially strange if you’re an iconic rock’n’roll rebel. There are various ways to cope: fight aging, badly (Axl Rose). Carry on as always, ending up a wrinkly parody of your young self (Keith Richards). Avoid it altogether and come back as a hologram (Tupac, Jimi Hendrix). Or, if you’re Patti Smith, continue, effortlessly, just to be who you are. It’s hard to write about Smith objectively. For some of us, she changed everything. Horses dropped in December 1975. Number one singles that year included songs by the Bee Gees and Neil Sedaka; punk had broken, but it was still all balls and blokes. For a thinking girl, it was a musical desert. In this environment, the plugged-in poetry of Horses was revelatory. Smith proved that punk and literature were kin; that you could be smart and eloquent and still put on skinny black jeans and stick it to the man. With Banga, she takes this further: you can be smart and eloquent and 65 and still put on skinny black jeans and stick it to the man. But to create beauty is okay too. The album finds Smith working with Horses guitarist and old friend Lenny Kaye. With age comes loss, and some of the tone here is elegiac. ‘Maria’ was written for the French actress Maria Schneider: “I knew you / now you’re gone”. On ‘This Is The Girl’, she eulogises “smouldering bird” Amy Winehouse to a fifties tempo and doo-wop vocals that echo the lost singer’s beehive. Banga at its most sublime, though, is the lullaby ‘Seneca’. Smith’s voice here is a mother’s, the one that soothes lucky children as darkness falls: “run my little one, read the hymn for him, for thee”. The song made me cry. And I never cry, not even during the sad bits of Charlotte’s Web. Yet her delivery has lost none of its muscle. “Night is a mongrel, believe or explode,” she snarls on ‘Banga’ above duelling eddies of guitar and bass, strings bending while a dog howls in the distance. And Smith is still brave. ‘Constantine’s Dream’ is a ten-minute spoken word improvisation that riffs on the Roman Empire, Columbus and Renaissance painting. Goodness. Banga is Patti Smith at her best: circumscribed not by trends, not by history, not by her own legacy. She just makes great art. Maybe she always will. Halo 4, the first in the series by developer 343 Studios, takes the action to planet Requeim. Revered by the Covenant (Halo’s signature enemy alien enemy), it’s also home to a lot of artifacts of the mysterious Forerunners. In addition to actually showing us the Forerunner species in action, Halo 4 marks the return of series hero Master Chief. While it isn’t yet clear if 343 can succeed in original developer Bungie’s stead, what we’ve seen of the game so far suggests that they just might. For a start, the wicked new enemies (like the Knight, Watcher, Crawler) look set to spice up the battlefield in interesting ways. Then there’s the tight integration of multi and single player, including the release of lots of additional content in the months following launch.

This camera has loads of exciting features: full 1080p HD video with a dedicated movie button and stereo sound, an optical viewfinder, a variable-angle high res LCD screen, 14-bit RAW shooting, HDR, tracking auto focus, and more.

There are also a number of improvements to the multiplayer, bringing it more in line with other modern shooters, as well as new weapons, modes and more. Halo 4, in a nutshell, shimmers with a new shine. We’re excited for its November 6th release date, and think you should be too.

Gears of War Judgment Eyes On Xbox 360 Gears Of War, a flagship series of the Xbox 360, has racked up a whopping 18.8 million units sold since it debuted in 2006. A new approach to third-person shooters, it introduced a groundbreaking cover system, a slower method of movement, and insane levels of both violence and gore. Gears Of War Judgment looks set to make some changes. To start with, it’s a prequel, and doesn’t feature Marcus Fenix in the lead role. New protagonist Baird, once a bit player in the story, is just the start; it also plays much faster, with an almost tenfold increase in speed. The boosted ballistics, supported by refined controls, enable a huge increase in the number of enemies players will need to fight at once. Judgment also promises to be one of the hardest games in the series, thanks to its dynamic difficulty system.

Marty McFly – ok, so he’s fictional, but come on, no one else can do denim on denim like he can! What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? ENCORE

Mirth and Music Veteran comedian and actor Lenny Henry returns to New Zealand with a show about something very close to his heart, music.

An audibly jaw-cracking yawn echoes down the line as I begin my interview with UK comedy legend Lenny Henry. It takes me a second to remember that, separated by the width of a planet as we are, our 7.30pm interview in fact translates to rather busy morning back in England… and I wasn’t even his first interview of that day. Yet if there are two things one could expect from a 37-year veteran of the UK comedy scene it’s a diligent work ethic, and a stellar sense of humour. Indeed, a moment or two’s conversation is enough to convince anyone that Henry has both things in spades; he doesn’t need a stage or a large audience to be funny, it’s just who he is. His new show is called Cradle to Rave, and I have a sneaking suspicion that in the years to come it will be remembered as unique amongst Henry’s vast array of previous projects. Eschewing a more traditional stand-up style, Henry has chosen to write a show that focuses specifically on one thing – music. Whilst it may seem an odd thing to be a major source of inspiration for a comedian, it’s clear that this is something Henry has been working on for quite some time. “I’m a huge music fan which is why I’m doing this show,” says Henry. “It was always going to happen, I always wanted to do this show but for a long time I wasn’t brave enough to do it because it’s quite a big thing with music to put it up there and say ‘this is what I like’.”

But fans need not fear that they are in for a lecture on music history. Henry looks at popular culture through the lens of a master satirist, and you can rest assured that today’s pop stars won’t escape unscathed. “I love talking about Amy Winehouse and Adele,” Henry laughs mischievously, “or hip-hop and how they talk about the ghetto but always have chandeliers when you see them on Cribs. I just like making jokes about musicians, I like teasing them.” In recent years, Henry’s career has blossomed creatively as he’s taken on a diverse range of projects including the title role in Shakespeare’s Othello. Whilst he was met with glowing reviews for his performance, to hear him tell it, the transition into the deathly serious world of Shakespearian tragedy presented a unique challenge. “If you’re a stand-up comedian and a phone goes off,” Henry says with mock outrage, “you can immediately stop the show and take the piss out of the person who’s got Andrew Lloyd Webber’s theme from Cats as their ring tone. But when you’re playing Othello you can’t be in the middle of a monologue and go, ‘Turn your phone off, you pillock, or I’ll shove it up your bumhole!’” While he’s quite right, it’s hard to escape the fact that it would be dreadfully funny if he did say just that. And who knows? Audiences may yet get the chance yet to see Henry deal with unruly theatregoers, as Shakespeare isn’t something he plans to move away from any

time soon. “I’d like to do more of it, definitely,” he exclaims. “It feeds into everything else you’re doing; if you do Shakespeare it really helps your comedy, it helps your writing and just kind of makes you understand how writing and comedy work.” So as the beloved star of the ‘80s alternative comedy movement gears up for his first NZ visit in years, I feel compelled to ask him the obligatory question – are you looking forward to coming back? “Yea I love coming over, it’s fantastic,” he beams. “When I go to America or Canada, there is always that weird thing when you think they’re not gonna get the references, and you have to ask ‘what do you guys say when you want to say this?’, but in New Zealand and Australia there is never any of that. They always seem to be very up on British comedy, they understand all the references and absolutely get British humour.” And get it they do – no doubt his loyal NZ fan base are sure to traipse along to Henry’s latest endeavour to see a show that is guaranteed to be packed with enormous amounts of the goodnatured mirth that permeates everything he does.
