Dear future Beam Bar Legend, Here at Beam, we have been working on a pretty amazing opportunity. Over the next three months, we’re running a bartender competition like never seen before here in little old New Zealand – and we want YOU to be a part of it. Do you live and breathe working in bars - the greatest job ever? Do you make all your non-bartending mates jealous with your ‘better work stories’? Are you the funniest person you know? Probably. Are you keen to take your career to the next level by becoming a champion for the sweet Beam portfolio? If you answered yes to all of the above, have we got a deal for you. We are not looking for a technical mixologist, bottle-thrower, or dedicated cocktail historian. We’re after the ultimate bartender with charisma, personality and dedication to the cause. You love your job, and always bring your A-game to every shift. Oh, and of course you will need to make awesome drinks too. This is a quest to find New Zealand’s first ever Beam Bar Legend. Every bartender in the country is eligible, and even if you’re not sure you’ve got what it takes, trust us, you have. Along with the awesome kudos that goes with being a Beam Bar Legend, our 2012 winner will take home: - An expense card to the value of $200 per week for 12 months (total value of $10,000) to spend on whatever you like, and the chance to be a brand champion for Beam, all while keeping your night job. - A trip to a Beam distillery of your choice, all expenses paid. Just so you know, we have famous distillery operations in Kentucky, France, Mexico, The Caribbean, Scotland, Ireland and Canada. - Plus, just to keep the boss happy, your bar will also win stock and a staff or customer party – to the value of $5,000! What are all these great prizes worth? Only a cool $25,000. Cash, international travel and a great party, plus we’ll also give you the opportunity for loads of publicity, and help you develop your career even further. Entries are open now – all the dates and stuff you need to know are on the official entry page – www.beambarlegend.co.nz. So get online and get amongst it - what are you waiting for?!

In Brief...

New Year’s Exodus

It’s barely halfway through the year and already we’re getting announcements of New Year’s Eve festivals. The 2012/13 Exodus festival at Papamoa Beach has been announced and organisers Reggae By Nature have planned the shindig to be the biggest one yet. The lineup includes Herbs, Cornerstone Roots, David Grace and Injustice, Katchafire, 1814, Three Houses Down, Tomorrow People, Sons Of Zion, Foundation, NRG Rising, Brown Hill, Tasty Brown, Tribal Conexionz, Sweet Echo and more across the two stages over 13 hours. Tickets are available from Wednesday 04 July through Eventfinder and Ticketek.

Are Carl Barat and Pete Doherty reuniting for a new album? Yes and no. The Libertines headline makers are perhaps more notorious for not showing up to their own gigs, getting in trouble with the cops and possibly bringing Kate Moss on board the drug train, but Barat told XFM Radio that the pair were going to meet up again to record new music once Doherty returns from rehab in Thailand. The Chris Brown and Drake feud is still going with Brown dissing the Canadian rapper on a remix of the Chief Keef’s track ‘I Don’t Like’: “They throwing bottles, I’m throwing models”, “This head up, my bread up, one on one, what you scared bro?” and “Them eyebrows, man, them shit is yikes” being some of the choice beef lines. Nicki Minaj has even gotten herself involved, saying she doesn’t approve of the fight. This follows the news that Brown and Drake were offered US$1 million each to fight in a boxing match. All of this, despite Drake saying he was never involved in the brawl.

Shit Worth Knowing

groove file Curiosity Killed the TomKat Vince MCMILLAN SHERPA

What are you working on right now? Prepping for our video release party at the moment, as well as writing some new songs. We plan on doing some more recording in September. Who was an inspiration to you growing up? My first drum tutor was king. Chris Grant – amazing musician/performer. I saw him playing drums one day and then the following week I began learning them. When you were a kid what was your dream job? Who didn’t want to be an astronaut? What’s your favourite venue in the country? Mighty Mighty on Cuba St. It has a cool aesthetic, the staff are hospitable and the crowds have usually drunk enough to dance to your music. Where was the last place you went out for dinner? Denny’s. If you can count 2am as dinnertime. What show are you most anticipating this year? Definitely Radiohead in November! What’s your guilty pleasure? Spring Break’s ‘No Tango Dinero’. A usual Saturday night for you is… Either playing a gig or going to one. I usually spend Saturday night with friends. A usual Wednesday night for you is… Mood dependent. I work weekdays so generally Wednesdays don’t get that messy, but I guess it all depends on what my friends or flatmates are doing. One piece of advice you’ve never forgotten… Don’t take anyone else’s advice. The biggest mistake you’ve made is… Not taking anyone else’s advice.

As we go to print, the innernets are going stir plum crazy over the demise of TomKat. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past seven years, that’s the name the general “we” have given to the oh-sovery creepy mismatched marriage between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

The reports are flying in left, right and centre about what could have caused this break up, and we’re sure that things will keep on coming up as the minutes turn into hours, the hours into days, and so on. It’s hard being a weekly magazine and trying to keep you up to date. So we’ve invited celebrity blogger Phillipe A. Lovato, Style Aficionado, to come in and predict what he thinks caused the break-up and what other headline worthy TomKat-related issues will be flooding the blogosphere over the next week. How did it happen? It’s pretty safe to say that most people saw this coming back in 2005 when Tommy C did his impression of a child who was just gifted a trampoline on Oprah’s couch. The man does his own stunts, so of course he’s full of energy and knows how to leap tall bounds. But that kind of behaviour is not becoming for a middle-aged cult leader in the making, right? Cult leader, you say? Yes, that’s what we’re all thinking, isn’t it? It has to be something to do with Scientology. Everyone’s favourite news empire dictator/emperor of everything FOX/enemy of The Simpsons Rupert Murdoch even thinks so. He thinks Scientology is “evil”, going so far as to telling the tweetums he thinks the Xenu praisers are up to no good. It’s great to know that Murdoch knows the good between good and bad, even if he doesn’t practise what he preaches. That’s a bit of a highbrow reference. Back to the celebrities, please. Sure thing, uninformed Gen-Y-er with the attention span of a goldfish. Depending on how old you are, your first memory of Katie Holmes may actually be her hanging out with Tom Cruise. You may only

know her as the mother of the baby that seems to have gotten more attention in its life than a baby that fell down a well. Wait, you’ll definitely be too young to get that one. Katie was, of course, our favourite brunette on Dawson’s Creek, the ‘90s show that was almost a breeding ground for talent but instead became where up-and-comers went to die a young death. What’s going to come out this week? “Sources close to the pair” are going to be telling gossip rags what’s happening. One in 100 of these will be semi-accurate. Was it something to do with Tom trying to get Suri deeper into his religion? Possibly. Ironically, Scientology doesn’t “acknowledge” divorce, whatever that means. Was it because there’s about a 20-year age gap? Possibly. Was it because sometimes people just fall out of love and in America one in two people file for divorce? There’s a good chance of that. Is South Park going to do an episode about this? As the mortal enemies of the church of Scientology, Matt Stone and Trey Parker (creators of South Park) have been at one-liner war with Cruise and co for nearly a decade. If anything breaks Tom Cruise’s spirit more so than the divorce from his wife, it will be whatever the South Park boys have cooked up for him. Will they go for the low blow? Hmmm…

San Fran bath house 10pm, FREE

Oh yeah, today’s the day that Yanks get all happy about because they beat the Poms. Mighty Mighty is getting into the swing of things with an Independence Day-themed shindig. We’re not sure if it’s more appropriate to dress up as Uncle Sam or Will Smith in army gear. And if you don’t get that reference, then you were probably born in the late ‘90s.

If there’s one thing the world can never get enough of, it’s Led Zeppelin tribute bands. Some would call it jock rock. Some would call them messengers of love. Some just sing the words really, really loud and get all air guitar up in your grill. But Whole Lotta Led just calls it what they think it is – the most influential music of yesterday’s generation.

Ah, jazz. Jazz is all about the brass. Jazz is all about beatniks. Jazz is all about feeling the rhythm. Jazz lends itself to be contemplated and digested by you, the listener. Jazz lends itself to being described way too much, almost to the point of parody. And then there’s something called the saxophone, which you may have heard about on tumblr.

Everyone’s favourite bionic pixie heads to Auckland’s Cassette Nine for a night of Electric Burlesque. What does that mean? ALBUME OF TH WEEK

What an amazing line-up the good folk at San Fran Bath House have cooked up for Wellington audiences tonight. City Showcase Napier City Centre 11am

New and emerging musicians will be performing in and around Napier’s art deco city centre from Friday through to Sunday with the ultimate winner handpicked by judges Hamish Pinkham, Mike Chunn, Peter Ulrich and Roy Brown, scoring the right to play in London in 2013 and at the Rhythm and Vines Festival. See them now before they blow up.

50s Night Henderson RSA 7pm

At first this seemed a little weird, because… you know, RSAs are for old people. But then you realise that getting all dolled up in your best ‘50s wear (which is why you go op-shopping anyways) and going to a themed rockabilly night with a bunch of yesteryear greasers is actually a hell of a way to spend a night.

Music festival meets house party at The Winter Carnival, specifically organised for those between 14 and 18 years old. Melissa Etheridge

Takacs Quartet

Michael Fowler Centre

Town hall

7.30pm, $99 – 142, ticketek.co.nz

Award-winning singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge is back Down Under and brings her rough and gritty bluesey country style to New Zealand audiences once again. The Walk-ofFamer has and Oscar, Academy Award and two Grammy Awards to her name for a reason. What more can be said?

7.30pm, $10-85, ticketek.co.nz

When this mix of violins, the viola and the cello come together played by Edward Dusinberre, Károly Schranz, Geraldine Walther and András Fejér, you realise why The Guardian has called Takacs Quartet the greatest string quartet in the world. There’s harmonic beauty, then there’s this.

Living Things opens with tribal drums and an interesting synthpop fusion overlaid with Mike Shinoda’s vocals, giving way to Chester Bennington’s melodic chorus. And for much of this record, Linkin Park are in this particular brand of full force. Bennington brings back the screams and with Shinoda and Rick Rubin at the production helm, it comes as no surprise that this album explores every inch of what Linkin Park have become. Arrangements that work seamlessly with all of the band’s musical elements and a song pace that rises and falls while never reaching the point of boring give this album a deserved air of confidence. Bennington and Shindoa are back to interlacing their vocals with production perfectly. One thing has become clear over the course of the decade and that’s that these men aren’t angry adolescents anymore; their world view has long developed since the politically driven tracks of Minutes To Midnight into a catalyst of well directed and orchestrated aggression. Chester’s screams in ‘Lies Greed Misery’ show he’s still a vocal force to be reckoned with. The contrast this creates with ‘I’ll Be Gone’ is beautiful, clean and powerful as he commands the line between soaring vocals and

epic scream. The album’s power may waver slightly with the first single ‘Burn it Down’ as track three, but ‘Greed Lies Misery’ picks the album back up with the strongest chorus they have to offer on this record, and all round the lyrics are the best this band has ever written. Living Things isn’t limited to it being a heavy electronic rock album. ‘Castle of Glass’ and ‘Roads Untraveled’ slow the album down, with electronics and ambience accentuating brilliant melody and songwriting. The guitars come in with added layer of depth and emotion, dropping away again for the vocals. The slower moments are achingly beautiful. While ‘Castle of Glass’ is very short, it is one of the tracks on this album that should be savoured. While the record has been hailed as a “back-to-roots” move, Living Things is more a powerful testament of the band’s growth and evolution. Perhaps it shouldn’t been seen so much as living in the shadow of its predecessors, but as the powerful electronic rock album that it is. WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY ALBUM OUT NOW

2012 has been a great year for superhero flicks. Earlier we saw the funnest superhero movie to date, The Avengers. There’s hijinx, then there are Seth MacFarlane hijinx. Involving sex and farts.

Bobs Burgers Four, 9pm

Further info directed by MARC WEBB Starring ANDREW GARFIELD, EMMA STONE, RHYS IFANS

In the decade since Tobey Maguire got all emo in Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man epic there have been three further Spidey films. Too many, too soon? Not much is really that different here, just a bit better. Partly that’s because The Amazing Spider-Man benefits hugely from technology, the CGI character swinging around Manhattan looking a million times better than in previous films. The improvement is also due to Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as the new Peter Parker, and director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). Garfield and Webb have created a cinematic Spider-Man truer to the source material in action, appearance and attitude – a bit more wisecracking, for instance, less brooding, and striking some poses that bring to mind some of the iconic Spider-Man comic artists of yore.

But the film’s also hampered by being yet another origin story, strange since the back-story of Peter Parker must be one of the best-known in popular culture – duh, he got bitten by a spider and got some powers. But these grumbles aside, this functions as a much better-than-average blockbuster, and features some great uses of 3D in its exhilarating webslinging action, particularly the shots from Spidey’s point of view as he swings across the Manhattan skyline. Garfield and real-life flame Emma Stone (playing love interest Gwen Stacy) share an unsurprisingly strong chemistry, even if all the zits in the world can’t make it seem ridiculous that they are playing teens and when Stone protests to dad Denis Leary that she’s 17 it is one of the few missteps in the film. WRITTEN BY STEVE NEWALL, FLICKS.CO.NZ IN CINEMAS NOW

Tuesday 10 30 Rock FOUR, 9:30pm

Jon Benjamin is without a doubt one of the funniest voice work comedian/actors around. Having worked on Archer, Home Movies, Lucy, Daughter of the Devil, Jon Benjamin Has A Van and so much more, Bobs Burgers is an animated gem among the plentiful passé rough. Watch it and love it.

Season six of one of the greatest NBC comedies around premiered last week and did not fail to deliver. We’ve seen Liz, Jack, Tracey, Jenna, Kenneth and crew go through a lot over the past five seasons. We can only hope that Liz Lemon gets her shit together before she starts adopting cats and teaching at community college.

Dunedin, drop whatever family roast plans you have for Sunday, because there’s a drive-in happening. A real life drive-in that we only ever get to see in the movies. It doesn’t even matter what’s playing. Just wear your leather jacket and go to an ice-cream café afterwards and live the rockabilly life.

MULtiple locations, wagamama.co.nz

234 Ponsonby Rd, Auckland

Wagamama’s Yaki Soba isn’t that feeling you have when you’re out at a party feeling gross when all of your friends are drinking and you’re being the good pal who has to drive home so you can’t drink. It’s yaki by name, not by nature. Try the fresh free range egg soba noodles cooked on a hot flat grill in all of its yaki style cooking glory, topped off with chicken, shrimp, free range egg, spring onion, capsicum, beansprouts and white onion. They even fancy it up with sesame seeds, shallots and pickled ginger. That’s more ingredients than you have in your house. Three Auckland bases and one in Wellington.

My friend just visited me in Auckland from Wellington. We went out to Ponsonby Road on Saturday night for a couple of hours but decided to go get some takeaways and go home instead. Turns out that wicked take away place Nina’s doesn’t exist anymore, but something just as cool has taken its place, or is maybe right next to it. Somewhere around there anyway. Bird On A Wire has free range rotisserie chicken and sandwiches fancy enough for the queen. My friend is gluten free and he could eat there as well, so I didn’t have to put up with his bitching and moaning all night. Thanks, Bird On A Wire people.

as fresh as apple pie there’s little doubt that james milne AKA lawrence arabia is one of the country’s biggest names in pop music today. groove guide talked with the the award winning musician about what the country can expect from the much-anticipated release of the sparrow and the accompanying nationwide tour. What prompted the choice of moniker Lawrence Arabia? It was probably seven years ago – it was just a moment of weakness. I used to front this band, The Reduction Agents, and I just decided I wanted an outrageous alter ego. I used to dress in robes and I think the Reduction Agents was meant to be a lot wilder than I’ve ended up becoming. So basically Lawrence Arabia was the frontman of that band and then Lawrence Arabia went solo... and here he is today. How did you start out? I learnt the piano when I was a child and my parents liked The Beatles. My dad used to play guitar at home and I was in the choir at school, the chapel choir. So basically the all-round musical experience growing up? Yeah, pretty much. I was always interested in music and then I joined The Brunettes when I was 21. I was doing a postgrad degree in politics at the time. How far do you think you’ve come musically as Lawrence Arabia? I think a lot. I hope. I’ve devoted my whole life to it, to a certain degree. I’ve certainly had to manage a lot of different roles and I’ve produced a lot of my own music and played a lot of the instruments. I’ve had to learn how to play instruments along the way and have gotten better at those instruments while doing it. I wouldn’t profess to be a master at any particular instrument or anything, but as far as learning different skills – from the point where I started – I think I’ve come a long way, definitely.

The Sparrow, your new album, seems to be taking a new alternative path – it’s diverting from what you were doing prior? I think probably every record I’ll do will naturally want to be different. It’s not like I’m a multi-platinum-selling artist by any stretch of the imagination, so there’s no one I’ve got to let down really. Oh, I don’t know. There’s a pretty big community that is hanging on your every tune. Yeah, but I hope that the small number of people that are into my music are adventurous enough to follow my music in different directions. And I just think I’ve decided to make something different to keep myself interested and to challenge myself in different ways. So tell me more about this new pathway you’re taking. Well, the last album [Chant Darling] did well… in certain ways. But it was a difficult process to make it and I was basically doing it as a one-man band. I had other musicians on it, but predominantly I did it all myself. I drove myself a bit mad during the production of it because I was doing everything myself , so I had infinite opportunities to play different bass lines or choose different instruments and I didn’t have any limitations. I had the entire history of music to draw upon and influence me... I basically just set up limitations for myself with this record because I didn’t want to go mad like that. I wanted to set up an environment in which I could create something that had a little bit more atmosphere, I guess. Like that the atmosphere of a moment, rather then an analretentive home producer trying to do everything perfectly.

123456789 Oh yeah, well, we have too much of that anyway. Well yeah, it’s the most common thing in music these days. I think with the opportunity to use digital recording everyone can obsess over it. Let’s hear about the touring plans. It’s quite ambitious I think. On the record there’s the string arrangements and horn arrangements. And because it’s a different sounding record, reasonably early on I decided to try and portray that live. Rather than just doing another rock show in a pub, I want to try and do something that’s more of an event. I don’t play that often anyway, so I figured I might as well make it even more special and go all out and play these theatres. So with a little bit of help I’ve been able to book the Auckland Town Hall, the Opera House in Wellington, Sammy’s in Dunedin and St Michaels Church in Christchurch, which are all rooms with high ceilings. I always enjoy playing live, but it’s a totally different experience keeping the whole idea of live entertainment fresh. I hope people are attracted to the idea of seeing something other then just a band trying to impress. Just rocking out. I mean, I like seeing bands rocking out, but I just wanted to try and do something different this time round. Now a personal question… why did you shave the moustache? It was god-like. [Laughs] Well, it’s very nice of you to say. I just got sick of it. People look at you differently when you have a moustache.

With respect and awe. And admiration. I don’t really always like drawing attention to myself in that way, and I just felt like maybe it was time to abandon facial hair. At least for the next decade. Awww. Knives in my heart. Sorry about that. Well, it had its glory days.

You Don’t Know Jack The sixth season of the NBC hit show 30 Rock returns to FOUR on Tuesday 03 July, and Groove Guide managed to get a few choice words from Jack McBrayer, AKA Kenneth Parcell, on the fan-favourite comedy and his character. What are some of the similarities between you and Kenneth? I tend to be a people-pleaser and I always try to be good at my job, but I would love to think I’m not nearly as annoying as Kenneth. But I don’t know, maybe my co-workers could say otherwise. Kenneth’s age and past are a bit of a mystery – is that hard to work with? Honestly wish I knew more. I do love, every now and then, when I get these random… like… crazy flashbacks. I’m like, what the hell, who is this person? Where did he come from? But it’s always a nice little treat every time you open a script and see something in there… maybe there’s just a carbon monoxide leak at NBC. I am a group hallucination. I think the very end of the series is like the end of The Shining, you push in on a picture of the pages from 1932 and there among the other pages is Kenneth. And Jack Nicholson. Is Kenneth a genius or an idiot? I swear to God if I knew the answer – I mean, I’d love to think that he has some idea of what he’s doing. There’s an episode in season one, I believe, where he had the opportunity to pitch a game show to NBC. And you know he was low-balling them but then he threw a curve ball in there too, so I’d love to think that he has a few tricks up his sleeve, but sometimes at the end of the day I’m like, ‘Oh my, poor Kenneth’. The whole series is basically the moral education of Kenneth Parcell.

Who is Kenneth Parcell modelled on? Between Rose Nylund from Golden Girls and a little bit of Barney Fife from Andy Griffith, I think you’ve got some of that in there. But no, I think Rose Nylund – that kind of hits the nail on the head. It’s just out of the writer’s heads and so I just show up and put on the suit and smile real big. I hope I’m cutting close to what they’re aiming for. I think he also raises people to his level. Everyone improves a little bit and he gets a little bit worse, that’s the story. Are there any true life inspirations for Kenneth Parcell? There are always tiny little things, like either little bits or little lines or something. It’s no secret that Jack McBrayer enjoys eating chick peas out of a can with a plastic spoon because it’s quick and to the point. No waste, no mess, no muss, no fuss. No dignity. But I do know that everything that the writers, even stories that we’re just telling at lunch and stuff, every now and then they will make their way into the scripts. So you’ve got to be careful.

What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? Classic white collar, a pair of well-fitting jeans (any style from Cheap Monday should help here), a unique pair of shoes and a woman who knows how to dress a man. ENCORE

Over the Moon Moving on from the past, Kiwi singer Lydia Cole bares all on her debut full-length album and puts a fresh twist on her heartbreak. It’s never easy to put into words the feeling of raw, emotional pain – but for singer-songwriter Lydia Cole, it was the best form of therapy. Coming out of a three-year long-distance relationship, the 24-year-old singer says at a time of no control, writing was the best way to make sense of things. “The writing was probably the easiest bit [of making the album] and quite a helpful process for me,” Cole says. “Writing a song about something crap or painful helps give me control.” Me & Moon is a tribute to love and loss. From the initial stages of meeting someone, to the closing track ‘Blind Boy’ – a very descriptive and straightforward message about how it ended – it’s as if you are there, watching and listening to their relationship play out.

|

Her new tour with Tom Lark is about refreshing the material and putting a new spin on her sound – which includes her playing the electric guitar for the first time. “To be honest, I always had this idea of people who play electric – kind of show ponies,” she says, giggling. “And I think often a female artist will start acoustic then to refresh she’ll pick up the guitar. I was like, ‘Ugh I’m going to avoid that.’ “But it was good to do that for me. It feels a lot different now. I’m trying to make it fresh for me.” Baring her soul night after night to her fans isn’t as hard as when she was recording the album, and Cole hopes the music comes across as relatable, rather than emotional.

It’s also difficult not to get a sense of connection with Cole. But while one might perceive her as a dark, brooding individual, she swears it’s just not the case.

“A lot of my songs are about loss and losing someone, and sometimes I will get a personal message from a fan and how it has moved them,” she says.

“I wonder if I come across as this sad person, but I’m really easygoing,” Cole laughs. “I just feel the need to write when I’m in this sad, broken mood. It’s funny.”

“It’s a real privilege. The last thing I want to do is make anyone sad. I hope, like me, if they hear a song that resonates, it makes them realise they are not alone.”

Looking back, Cole says these “snapshots” are not how she feels today, adding, “My attitude was bad. Some of the songs I’m not proud of.” 30

She admits “all people are messy”, and likes to see the album as marking a time in her life.
