Matariki is taking over Auckland’s Silo Park on Saturday 21 July. The Maori New Year festivities will be more than the usual couple of bands playing down at the waterfront venue, with interactive displays and performances throughout the day. Light installations and a video projection mapping from Lakshman Anandanayagam, Angus Muir, Jon Baxter and Michael Hodgson will be heightening and enlightening your senses along with music from Anika Moa, Ria Hall, Anna Coddington and DJs. There’s a food special with the Maori night markets and if you’re really feeling spaced, you can check out the stardome telescopes and get all existential and whatnot.

Old school hip-hop crew The Pharcyde have announced they’ll be making their way to New Zealand in August – the first time the rappers will have performed on our shores. Support acts are yet to be announced, but tickets are available now through Dash Tickets, iTicket and at selected local outlets. For more information check out La De Da on Facebook.

Ben Harper has announced he’ll be making his way back to New Zealand this November for two acoustic shows. The guitarist artist is no stranger to Aotearoa, having played a toured a number of times and being more than familiar with some Maori style tattoos, so odds are he’s just as excited as we are with the news of his return. The singer’s An Evening With Ben Harper tour will be solo acoustic style sets over the course of two hours or so, with the first show at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on Saturday 03 November and at Auckland’s ASB Theatre on Monday 05 November. Tickets are available now through Ticketek and The Edge.

The long list of APRA Silver Scroll nominees has been announced. This is the list that the Silver Scroll winner will be drawn from come September after the finalists are announced in August. The winner will receive $5,000 as they are recognised by their peers as the best of the best of 2012. Some of the artists up for the award are Tom Scott and Hayden Dick from Home Brew, Lisa Crawley, Kody Nielson, Lydia Cole, Jess Chambers, Jon Toogood and Julia Deans from The Adults, Annah Mac and many more.

Two Blasts from the Past

The Bengal Lights will be reforming for one special show. If you’re not familiar with the two-piece, maybe you’ll remember that Zowie used to perform under a different moniker. Yep, the starlet is one half of the fan-favourite female duo that broke up back in 2008, the other half being Maeve who went on to form another female two-piece, Cat Venom. Muzai Records announced that Zoe and Maeve will play one show at Auckland’s Whammy Bar on Saturday 25 August in association with Cheese On Toast. The good news gets even better with the news that Auckland yoof-noise thrash heads Bandicoot will also be reforming for the one-off show. It’s a night of broken bands back together all for the good of your earballs.

Martians and the Stardome. It’s not just you, higher than a flight attendant tripping balls on a Richard Branson/Virgin Airlines space flight – no, it’s Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds. The live multimedia stage show will be performed 34 times every Wednesday to Sunday from the beginning of November. A culmination of the classic Martians invading story along with dramatic staging, sound and lighting mixed with custom-made visuals means heat rays, smoke effects and a bunch of all around wacky shit that will make you feel like E.T. has come and he’s a bad guy. Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version Of The War Of the Worlds makes its world debut at Stardome exclusively, and we’re excited to see the unique 360 degree performance that the planetarium provides. Tickets are available now through iTicket.

PLAYING What an Asset FAVourites Tom Lark

Favourite drink? I really love Shasta cherry cola! Favourite restaurant/café? Anywhere with Bubble tea. Favourite takeaway? Pizza! Ah-yum-a-yum-a-yum. Favourite colour? Peachy red. Favourite classic film? Back To The Future. Favourite childhood memory? Mum took my brother and I on the Cookie Time factory tour once, I remember it being delicious. Favourite party food? Nothing too messy, M&Ms maybe.

Remember the election last year? There was one. National won. Remember it now? Good stuff. Around that time, there was also a little debate over a little piece on international business called asset sales. And that little argument is still going on. In fact, it’s kind of the hottest political topic since Bill Clinton and a certain cigar. It’s a burning topic, alright. A topic that’s being taken to the streets this Saturday. If you’re a student you’ve probably seen people around, asking you to sign a petition. Hell, if you’re a student, there’s a good chance you’re one of the people holding that clipboard with everyone’s signatures on it. Younger folks are leftier folks, after all. This year we’ve seen students up in arms all over the show. They’re on the news, blockading Queen Street in Auckland. They’re in the background of Back Benches. At least they were before TVNZ7 got the plug pulled. But now it’s not just students out to be heard. It’s almost everyone who has been vocally objective about the asset sales plan put forward by the Government. This Saturday 14 July sees the public network of individuals, groups and the “Aotearoa NZ Is Not For Sale” organisation initiate the National Day of Action Against Asset Sales. Since the sale of assets is a trending topic of many a dinner table around the country on a weekly basis, it’s your right to know about the intended march this Saturday. It’s also on you to decide whether you’re for it or against it. Aotearoa NZ Is Not For Sale say: “As New Zealanders we already own these assets, so why should we be forced to buy them back ourselves just to keep them under kiwi control?” They also say that it is “unfair to

GETTY IMAGES

sell assets that currently belong to all New Zealanders to a small minority who can afford to buy shares.” A spokesperson from the group said, “Only 10 per cent of New Zealanders invest in the stock market, while the rest of us struggle to pay our power bills that will only rise when these state owned enterprises are sold as shareholders will demand increased profits.” The group says thousands of people around the country will be taking part to demonstrate continued opposition to the sale of state assets. “In Auckland, after a march up Queen Street, a public meeting will be held which will include the outlining of a campaign against Mighty River Power and proposing the following a call for a nation-wide boycott of Mercury Energy, Tiny Mighty Power and Bosco.” This Auckland march is part of more than 15 demonstrations around the country on Saturday. This does not mean that the march will have any outcome on the decision making process, of course. Whether Aotearoa NZ Is Not For Sale is successful in initiating a public awareness day may not have any actual effect on the final outcome. But you can guarantee that the 6pm news teams will be talking about it, just in time for your family dinner table conversations.

The guy looks like John Butler minus the trio. He sounds like Ben Harper with some Dodos thrown in for good measure. TUESDAY 17 Terror Void 7pm, $30, undertheradar.co.nz

Terror isn’t just your run-of-the-mill five-piece hardcore troupe. They’re an energy and a force. They’re emotional tough guys. They play on average something like 300 shows a year. Them’s the figures. Them’s the breaks. Them’s terrifying statistics.

For someone who isn’t a Smashing Pumpkins fan, Billy Corgan’s vocal style can take a while to get used to. Other than that, Oceania is rock bliss. This is a full hour of a Smashing Pumpkins arse-kicking that earns this album a space on every rock listener’s shelf. The riffs of the album opener ‘Quasar’ are fantastic and give the song a massive amount of bite. ‘Panoptic’ continues with the heavy drums. The guitar work on this album is sheer mastery; it slices across the drums and bass and competes perfectly with Corgan’s vocals that rise and fall. ‘One Diamond, One Heart’ is gloriously unexpected, with a synth pop-esque opening that continues under “I’m not here to hold your hand / I’m just here to understand”. The drums, bass and guitar of this track move in slowly and before matching the level of synths. It is the least rock-oriented track on the record but, if only for the bass line and fusion of the soundscape, is worth a listen. The title track is a nineminute-long wonder that opens with a beautiful bass line and involves a bit of extra synth work, creating a world of depth without overwhelming the melody of the track. At around 3.20 minutes, everything falls

away and the listener is left with Billy Corgan, an acoustic guitar and Nicole Fiorentino’s gorgeous harmony, shifting onto a very sexy bass line before the track becomes something else entirely. The Smashing Pumpkins have created a masterpiece with this track. With ‘The Chimera’ the album becomes heavy again. ‘Inkless’ sets the tone for closer ‘Wildflower’, which is full of riffs, bass lines, and drums that are edged with grunge and melded together by a band that knows exactly where they want the listener headed on the album. The isn’t a dull moment on this record and in some way you’ll lament that tracks such as ‘Inkless’ and ‘Wildflower’ aren’t longer. WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY ALBUM OUT NOW: OCEANIA

Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D

Parkway Drive Academy Cinemas

Byron Bay sensations Parkway Drive are premiering their semi-doco/semi-generic-band-road-movie at Academy Cinemas this week. With footage from 42 countries, the 75 minute Home Is For The Heartless DVD is a travelogue capturing the ups, downs and shows about towns Parkway Drive have performed.

Further info directed by DAN CUTFORTH, JANE LIPSITZ Starring KATY PERRY, SHANNON WOODWARD AND RACHAEL MARKARIAN

The Block TV3, 7:30pm

The renovation reality show has arrived in New Zealand, and we’re not quite sure what to make of it. We’re a nation of DIYers, right? So we should be right into this with our love on number eight wire, watching with our carpentry friends, drinking beer, etc. Really though, we’re just waiting to see what arguments everyone gets into. Reality television!

Happy Endings TV2, 9pm

This comedy has us baffled. On the one hand, it’s better than most of the generic laughbox crap we’re used to seeing on TV2 (the Chuck Lorre comedies that assume all geeks are nerdy virgins and that fat people are fat but can still find love), plus it has Adam Pally who is utterly hilarious. On the other, it’s kind of like a cartoon with all those weird facial expressions.

THURSDAY 12

It can be difficult justifying the existence of a concert movie based on a pop-music phenomenon. Some can draw in an audience by filming performances that celebrate an artist’s passion for their craft (This Is It), while others blindly beat a dead cash cow with a piñata stick (Glee: The 3D Concert Movie). Fortunately, Part Of Me is more a case of the former instead of feeling like the latter. Katy Perry’s rather uninteresting success story isn’t exactly featurelength material, and the film knows this. Instead, her origin is glanced over in favour of what really matters: Katy’s relationship with her followers. These moments exemplify the pop star’s dedication to supporting her fans, leading to a particularly touching moment in São Paulo that showed how the fans are able to do the same for her. It’s a shame the film doesn’t give us an insight into the gruelling creative process that

brings Perry’s sugar-coated fantasies to life, for this could’ve added to the audience’s understanding of the tremendous pressure the star was under on tour. Performances are smoothly integrated into the narrative, working in context with the behind-the-scenes material. The high visual quality of the concert footage is matched by the equally superb sound. In combination with the impressive 3D, these segments exude the energy of a live show. Although I couldn’t call myself a fan of Perry’s music, I was captivated by her bluesyjazz rendition of ‘I Kissed A Girl’. Part Of Me is an extremely well-made concert documentary that fans are going to indulge in, packed with high energy, basic morals and an infectious charm – much like Perry herself. Prime, 8:30pm

General Release

From the mind of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane comes Ted, the story of a boy whose wish came true. Then the story continues, and the teddy bear that came to life grows up and acts suspiciously like a super horny and filthy Peter Griffin who hangs out with a almost deadbeat version of Mark Wahlberg. It actually seems pretty good.

Part one of the two-part documentary The Savoy premieres this Friday. What’s it about? A hotel that wants to be the leading luxury hotel – the best in the world. Why is that interesting? Because it has Stephen Fry in it, and as we all know, anything featuring Stephen Fry is better than anything without Stephen Fry. The dude oozes charm. British charm, no less.

234 Ponsonby Rd, Auckland

Chicks dig bad boys. Bad boys and scars. And guys dig naughty things. In Japanese, wagamama means naughty child. So if you’re a bit of a nerd, trying to impress that bad boy or naughty girl, take them out to Wagamama for a bite or two. Even better, here’s some scintillating dinner conversation so you won’t be lost for words: “Did you know that a child said to be ‘wagamama’ demands constant attention? That’s so Gen Y, right”; “Wagamama was launched in 1992. So were Taylor Lautner, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus.”; “You’re really hot. Like this meal I’m eating. Sorry, was that too forward? Do you want me to be backwards instead?” Nailed it.

My friend just visited me in Auckland from Wellington. We went out to Ponsonby Road on Saturday night for a couple of hours but decided to go get some takeaways and go home instead. Turns out that wicked take away place Nina’s doesn’t exist anymore, but something just as cool has taken its place, or is maybe right next to it. Somewhere around there anyway. Bird On A Wire has free range rotisserie chicken and sandwiches fancy enough for the queen. My friend is gluten free and he could eat there as well, so I didn’t have to put up with his bitching and moaning all night. Thanks, Bird On A Wire people.

muppets for grown-ups Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane talks about bringing a toy to life – and watching him turn out to be a bit of a dick.

When you were a kid, you very badly wanted one of your toys to come to life. That’s why Toy Story was so much of a hit. Part of the reason, at least. You wanted a friend you could trust, someone you could tell your secrets to. Someone who, when you ran to your room because your mum was making you eat broccoli, would say to you, “Yeah, your mum is a jerk and broccoli is an even bigger jerk.” Then you grew up and realised that notion is a childish one. In the case of Ted, the came-to-life toy grew up with his owner – and he turned out to be a bit of a beatnik sleaze, bumming around, pissing off his owner’s girlfriend and using his money. He’s the friend that we’ve seen in every movie before as that “I need to turn my life around” plot device. But in Ted, the plot device is the plot instead. Ted was born from the mind of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. Although MacFarlane originally conceived of Ted as an animated series, he came to the conclusion that the story would lend itself better to film. Fellow Family Guy collaborators and scribes Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild were brought onboard to develop the story of the magical stuffed teddy bear and his owner who grew up to find themselves in a state of arrested development. The exposition answers those questions you find yourself, as a grown-up, pondering – if a toy did come to life, wouldn’t everyone know about it? Wouldn’t it be famous? Would the headline-grabbing teddy bear appear on late night talk shows? Yes. But it also addresses the aging attention span audiences around the world would have for said toy. As the decades roll on, grown-up John (played by Mark Wahlberg) finds that his once cherished toy has become his worse for wear, foul-mouthed, cynical companion. MacFarlane’s first foray into the directing realm wasn’t approached solo. Once he decided the time was right, the Hollywood A-lister opted to bring many of the Family Guy crew along for the ride. Being notorious for the offensive humour we’ve come to love (or hate) so very passionately, Family Guy-style gags aren’t for the masses. It’s grown-up fart jokes with plenty of talk of sex. It’s full of swearing and is bountiful with in-joke homage references. Writer Alec Sulkin notes this when he says, “Seth said he wanted it to be a very R-rated comedy… The bear comes to life with a child’s wish, and then you cut to almost 30 years later and it’s the roommate who won’t leave. They have a sweet beginning, then Ted becomes this national sensation and ultimately turns into something like a former child star. He’s somebody who was famous, is still alive, but not famous anymore.” MacFarlane says that he was excited about the humour that occurs after the boy and bear grow up. “A big part of the comedy comes from the fact that years after the bear came to life, people have gotten used to it and nobody cares anymore… a point it would naturally get to in real life. So once that big moment has passed, what’s the other 95 per cent of your life going to be like?” Not only is MacFarlane the voice, director, producer and co-writer of Ted, but he also played the animated character in the motion suit. “It was necessary to have the suit there every day,” he says. “There were days when I had to have it on the entire day, so it had to be something that was going to capture the data that we needed but wasn’t going to be constrictive or distracting. “In a perfect world, the performance of Ted is the same as everyone else’s performance. We wanted them all to be people, one of whom happens to have the body of a teddy bear. The trick was to treat Ted the same way as we treated everyone else… The guy I look to as the epitome of doing that right was Jim Henson. Muppets were real people. In that world it was normal for Muppets to be walking around… that was what we wanted.” Written by Eddie Vader IN CINEMAS: THU 11 JUL

ALBUM OUT NOW

projections of grandeur After years of flying under the mainstream radar, Dirty Projectors broke out into the popular sphere with Bitte Orca in 2009. Three years on, Swing Lo Magellan looks set to once again thrill fans old and new. Not so long ago, appreciation for Dirty Projectors was relegated to only the ranks of indie music’s most devout followers. For a band whose bread and butter consisted of jarring song structures, studio experimentation and bizarre concept albums (a track-by-track reimagining of Black Flag’s Damaged, anyone?), the prospects of breaking into the mainstream must have seemed mightily slim indeed. Yet that’s exactly what Dirty Projectors did in 2009 with their album Bitte Orca, somehow managing this feat with only minimal tweaks to their uncompromisingly distinct sound. Since then, the band has been turning heads in the wider music community with their infectiously catchy, intricately arranged vocal harmonies and innovative songwriting. Industry heavyweights have reached out in acknowledgement of the group, leading to notable collaborations with David Byrne on the compilation album Dark Was The Night, and with Björk for a benefit concert in aid of the charity organisation Housing Works. “It was really awesome,” says vocalist and guitarist Amber Coffman on working with Björk. “She’s a really cool lady and of course an amazing singer, probably a perfect singer really.” Working with two of music’s greatest innovators would inspire anyone, but for an oddball group like Dirty Projectors it must have felt somewhat vindicating to gain appreciation from two such venerated musicians. “We put that piece of music together really quickly,” says Coffman on the Housing Works concert. “So it was pretty exhilarating when we performed it with her. A year later we recorded it, just ‘cause it was such a special thing to all of us.” That recording session became 2010’s Mount Wittenberg Orca EP, a plaintive collection of tunes featuring Bjork that helped bridge the three year gap between Bitte Orca and the soon-to-bereleased Swing Lo Magellan. Their albums encapsulate enough styles and techniques to warrant a team of songwriters, so it’s a rather pleasant surprise to learn that there’s

just one man responsible for the majority of Dirty Projectors’ output. “David [Longstreth] writes all the songs in this band,” says Coffman. “There are times when I’ve written a bit of lyrics, a melody here and there or something, but by and large Dave writes it and then we all put it together.” Having the kind of creative control that Longstreth has over the group surely goes a long way to shaping the curious incarnations the band has taken over the 11 EPs and albums they’ve released to date. “David’s been putting records out on Dirty Projectors for a long time,” says Coffman. “He’d have different bands on each record and then six years ago I went on my first tour with him. The band evolves a lot each time, we all met Dave in different ways and just sorted ended up together.” It’s that easy come, easy go ethos that has seen the group rack up some 22 past and present members. Regardless of what a nightmare it must be managing the egos and aspirations of so many musicians, you can’t argue with the results – the back catalogue of Dirty Projectors features some of the most daringly strange music of the new century. It’s a formula that they won’t be giving up anytime soon it seems; their forthcoming album is a succinct collection of beautifully quirky tunes. “The songs on this album have a lot of swag,” laughs Coffman, and it’s not hard to see what she means; opening track ‘Offspring Are Blank’ has a raucous rock’n’roll quality that belies the album’s more down-tempo moments. In some ways, Swing Lo Magellan is a subtle change of direction for the group. In the past they’ve put great store in overarching themes and concepts, yet this release is a collection of songs more in the style of Bob Dylan, each individual story seemingly complete and whole within itself. Or perhaps there is an underlying narrative that we’re just missing? “There might be,” says Coffman mysteriously, “but I think we might want to leave that up to listeners for awhile.” WRITTEN BY CLOVIS MCEVOY ALBUM OUT NOW: Swing Lo Magellan

The mention of yet another movie tie-in video game is usually met with grumbles of disapproval and the rolling of eyes skywards in the gaming world. However, anyone who remembers the brilliant game based on the Spider-Man 2 movie knows this franchise has a lot of potential. And the good news is that same winning formula has been revamped for the current-gen market in The Amazing Spider-Man.

PRETTY FLY FOR A RICH GUY By Jetovator

Blow minds with this crazy hover jet with a forward speed of up to 25mph and limited to a height of 25 feet. It can also dive underwater. RRP $11,160 (power source not included) jetovator.com

The game opens up with an interactive cinematic sequence where our hero, Peter Parker, is being shown through Oscorp’s laboratories. Naturally, all hell breaks loose, in the form of hybrid creatures who manage to escape the high-security installation. It’s up to Spider-Man to hunt down and restrain these beasts as they run rampant through the streets of Manhattan. From here, most of the game takes place in a sprawling open city where Spidey is free to hoon around as he pleases. To keep the gameplay varied, there are also interior environment missions, where Spidey will be confined to small areas. Although these aren’t as thrilling as the city-based stuff, crawling through air-vents and adapting to the tight environments breaks up the pace nicely. There are times, however, when the camera angle feels too confined. The developer’s attempt to put you in the action has a side effect of everything feeling claustrophobic. Turning, for instance, is occasionally clunky, especially in interior areas, and Spidey will often take a number of steps before you’re facing the right direction. The game has a well-conceived storyline which deserves credit for not simply rehashing the events of the movie. It’s driven by some solid voice-acting as well, despite the fact that the actors in the film were not involved here. The combat and general control scheme do the job, but they definitely lack the finesse of rival comic book-related title Batman: Arkham City. Fans will, however, definitely get a buzz swinging between buildings; hearing Spidey whoop and holler as he performs death-defying acrobatics over Manhattan.

Overall, it comes close to matching that feeling of awe I got when I first played Spider-Man 2 way back in 2004. Those fans who do get a buzz out of it can also look forward to some interesting DLC, including extra costumes and challenge modes. Recommended. WRITTEN BY ANGUS DEACON

DAVID MARCH MEDIA DESIGN SCHOOL TUTOR

What class do you tutor – what’s it all about? I lecture and mentor for the Game Development class at Media Design School. It’s an intensive course where we teach the students all the ins and outs of learning how to create and implement games. The game artists learn the software, tools and engine pipelines to get their assets into to one of the available game engines. For example, they learn how to model, texture, rig and animate using the appropriate software tools. They then learn how to export these art assets into a gaming engine like Unreal or Havok. Additionally, the artists work in teams with the game programming students to make their games. The programmers work hand-in-hand with the artists to write code and tools for their games. It’s rewarding to watch the students learning to work together and see what kind of magic they produce. What did you work on before? The most recent title I worked on was the AAA shooter Homefront from Kaos Studios. I worked as the lead cinematics animator for that project. Past games I have been credited for include Far Cry, BioShock and Duke Nukem Forever. Apparently you’re a bit of a gaming whizz. What’s your favourite console? Why? That’s always a tough question because I like so many games on all of them. I would say the Xbox 360 because that’s what I have been playing recently, but I guess it all depends on which game I am currently playing. What’s your favourite game of all time? It’s a toss-up between Another World on the Amiga 500 or Ultima 4 on my Commodore 64. Both of these games made a major impact on me as a kid, so I’ve got to credit them for that. Do you have a favourite genre of game? My favourite game genre is RTS (Real Time Strategy). However, I like to work on shooters because you get to push the art and animation technology. Best fighting game? Street Fighter 3. Best shoot-em-up? Team Fortress 2. Best racing game? Gran Turismo series. Best smartphone game? UniWar. Most underrated game around today? Roogoo. In your humble expert opinion, what will the future of gaming be? It’s going to be all digital-based and streaming from the cloud. We still have a long way to go, but technology is moving fast. There have already been paradigm shifts within the industry. Flash-based games and iPad/Android games have been on the move for some time now and will continue to grow. Recently there’s been a push for the free-to-play micro-transaction-based business model. You will always be able to purchase something but I believe this model is also here to stay.

ENCORE

surging on forward

Time away from Grammy Award-winning band System Of A Down has given frontman Serj Tankian just that - time, most importantly for solo work. “I’ve no idea where I’m going, but it’s fun,” laughs Serj Tankian from his LA studio as we sit down to chat over a rather dodgy Skype connection. At 44 years old, the lead singer of the Grammy Award-winning System Of A Down is showing no signs of slowing down. The Lebanese-born, LA-raised New Zealand resident isn’t your typical frontman: he’s also a distinguished solo musician, an orchestral and theatre composer and a published poet. And to hear him tell it, the next couple of years might be his busiest yet. Much to the dismay of their legions of fans, in 2006 System Of A Down went on indefinite hiatus – and though they have recently reformed, it was this time away from the band that allowed Tankian to break free of his alt metal roots and begin indulging other creative whims. The result: a myriad of projects ranging from orchestral symphonies to anthologies of poetry and even a Broadway musical, Prometheus Bound. It’s also given Tankian the time to pen a number of solo albums – the most recent of which, Harakiri, is set for release on July 10, 2012. “Harakiri is the rock record that’s coming out first,” says Tankian, “and we also have a jazz record that I got done with a few friends of mine, some really cool jazz-heads. There’s a couple of vocal tracks on there, but it’s mostly instrumental.” In fact, Tankian has four albums lined up for release in the near future, each one a testament to his eclectic tastes. “I also have an electronic record that I did with my friend Jimmy Urine from Mindless Self Indulgence,” says Tankian with a self deprecating laugh. “That’s sort of like a British gangster soundtrack.” Yet it’s his forthcoming album Orca that really caught my attention. In 2009, Tankian recorded his Elect The Dead Symphony at the Auckland Town Hall, pairing up with one of New Zealand’s most renowned

composers, John Psathas, to craft a once-in-a-lifetime concert event. So can fans expect something in a similar vein? “Orca is kind of in that realm, in fact it’s even more classical because it’s a full-on symphony. Elect The Dead [Symphony] was more of a symphonic rendering of my Elect The Dead rock record.” With such a wealth of material from a variety of genres streaming forth, it’s little wonder Tankian professes a range of influences which may surprise his hardcore rock fans. “In terms of vocals I love female jazz vocals like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday. I love something about their immediacy,” Tankian says earnestly. “Or Tom Waits for example, totally love his vocal styling.” It was Tankian’s own unusual vocal delivery that helped define S.O.A.D’s signature sound, and was a key element in their rise to fame – so it should come as no surprise that it’s something Tankian had to work hard at, and is still fine tuning to this day. “When you first start singing you take your influences and you mimic them until you find your own voice and then you go from there,” says Tankian. Given System Of A Down’s recent reunion and tour, including a frenzied sauna of a show in Auckland, I couldn’t help but ask the question on every die-hard fan’s lips: can we expect a new record from the band anytime soon? “You know, we really don’t have any particular plans of making a record right now,” he says, brow furrowing. “We haven’t talked deeply about when or where to do any of that, so anytime soon would be a no. One day? Sure.” WRITTEN BY CLOVIS MCEVOY ALBUM OUT NOW: HARAKIKI
