The Huffington post said, “Backed by two drummers and two keyboardists, she packs more punch and energy than a case of Red Bull.” This is a show not to be missed. Claire Boucher, more commonly known as the dreamy, glitch pop artist GRIMES is coming our way in December. The Canadian singer is set to playing two shows while she’s on our side of the world. Wellington and Auckland will be luck enough to see this babe with her crazy fringe and often pink hair later this year. She released a new music video over the weekend which gives us an idea of what to expect.

Linkin Park has announced they are bringing their Living Things World Tour to little ol’ New Zealand. In February 2013 Auckland’s Vector Arena will get a taste of the ‘new’ Linkin Park. With the bands fifth album being release a few months ago fans have seen a different side to the once ‘alternative rock’ band. “They’ve traded turntable scratches for dub-step flourishes,” said Rolling Stone. The band’s New Zealand concert precedes their headline performance at this year’s Soundwave Festival in Australia.

New Zealand’s fourth most popular comedy folk-duo is back and doing it for the kids this time. Funny man and now Oscar winning songwriter, Bret McKenzie, alongside his equally funny partner in crime, Jermaine Clement, aka Flight Of The Conchords, have collaborated with primary school kids from Auckland’s Grey Lynn School and Wellington’s Clyde Quay School to write a song. The track is finished and they have named it ‘Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)’. The song is fundraising for the wellknown charity Cure Kids and the video has gone viral over the past weekend. A massive range of well-known kiwi artists gathered at the legendary Roundhead Studios in Auckland City to record the heartwarming song. The musicians involved included Dave Dobbyn, Brooke Fraser, Boh Runga, Sam Scott, Luke Buda, Savage, Young

Sid, Tyree, Deach, PNC, Zowie, Ruby Frost, Kids of 88, Rikki Morris, Moana Maniapoto, Nathan King, Maitereya, Victoria GirlingButcher, Elizabeth Marvelly, Peter Urlich and Cherie Mathieson. The very Flight Of The Conchord-esk lyrics include “Their feeling lostiptal in the hospital.” “Children getting sicker, they’re drinking too much bubble mixture. We all just want to be bubbles!” And those are just some of the über cute lyrics written by the kids. Surely some were already fans of the comedy duo. The song, released just a few days ago has already racked in 1.3 million dollars for the charity, and the fundraising is not over yet. You can purchase the song from iTunes and donate to Cure Kids on their website curekids.org.nz. Do it for the kids man!

In the first half of the last decade, Pluto were one of our country’s most celebrated and most promising musical outfits – poised to take the world by storm. They were challenging, engaging, and above all, fearless. Like many good things though, that band came to an end a few years ago with a whisper rather than a shout. But like a phoenix, a new band has risen from those ashes to continue where Pluto’s strident march forwards left off. That band is Nightchoir and it features three former Plutonians; Mike Hall, Matthias Jones, and Michael Franklin-Browne. See The First Star is the band’s second album and follow-up to their woefully under-appreciated debut, 2010’s 24 Hours Of Night. Whereas that previous record was the band’s first foray into being an independent functioning studio unit this time around the trio are brimming with wit and confidence. The albums opens with ‘Around With Me’s joyous call to arms before slipping into a comfortable alt-country groove. The track smacks off the likes of Wilco and other “grown up” rock outfits. Every track further in that you venture uncovers a world of sublime pop magic – you can practically hear sparks leaping from their fingertips as they rattle out song after

endearing song and draw you deeper into their world. They do this not with smash-thedoor-down theatrics but with gentle persuasion and genuine heartfelt brilliance. While the piano dominates proceedings on the quieter number, guitars are a constant motif. They can play a pub-roof rattling riff (as on lead single ‘Caveman’) or completely blissed-out (‘Emily’). This is all a matter of balance. See how short, sharp explosions, like the sub two-minute ‘Put It In The News’, sit comfortably beside gorgeous careworn ballads. The true magic of See The First Star is how seamlessly it fits into the great New Zealand pop-rock tradition. Many of these tracks harken back to the likes of The Verlaines, or even Goodshirt for a more recent reference. It may not have anything as anthemic as ‘Dance Stamina’ or ‘Long White Cross’ but there is a coy heart beating in the breast of this album that is quite infectious. With this album Nightchoir have completely broken out of “that other band’s” shadow and by the looks of things they have a very long and adventurous future ahead of them. WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

NZSO NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA CO-CONCERTMASTER People say you look like… Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl... I have a coat (and shoe) collection that would (nearly) rival hers.

LEVIN 8PM, $20-25, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ

One of New Zealand’s finest comedy acts, Gish has more “bros” and “sweet as” punch lines than you can poke a can of Tui at. Using classic Kiwi humour, the wicked combination of original and popular song parodies, as well as a healthy dose of one-liners, is guaranteed to have you rolling in the isles.

On Saturday, September 8, at 6:30pm in the CBS Arena in my hometown Christchurch, the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and the New Zealand Youth Choir will be performing in an amazing concert. HOPE SPRINGS

MOONRISE KINGDOM GENERAL RELEASE, 94 MINS

Known for his indie flicks characterised by whacky and unusual individuals, director Wes Anderson’s latest offering is sure to impress even the biggest film critic. Set in the summer of ’65 (not ’69), a small town community is mobilised in search of two runaway lovebirds. An all-star cast – Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray – feature.

directed by David Frankel Starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell

ADVENTURE TIME CARTOON NETWORK, 3.30pM & various times

Finn is a silly kid who wants to become a great hero one day. He might not look too tough, but if there’s evil around, he’ll slay it with the help of his best friend Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Described as a viral hit, this cartoon series is going to bring out the big kid in you with loads of laughs.

FRIDAY 31 ANACONDA FOUR, 8.30PM

This cult classic – I mean that in the loosest sense – showed that Ice Cube had acting skills (kind of) and was one of many “scary animal” movies that were so popular in the 1990s (ie Deep Blue Sea, Lake Placid). Jenny from the Block’s famous arse gets a lot of screen time in far-too-tight cargo pants.

FATBOY SLIM LIVE

No doubt any marriage that has lasted 31 years is a deep vein of emotional drama, but Hope Springs fails to mine that rich source with either sensitivity or humour. It attempts to be a relatable chick flick for the gold card crowd, but the characters are so one-dimensional and cliché that most baby boomers will find this portrayal of their generation insulting. Doting wife Kay is the character equivalent of a potato sack. If anyone can make that look good, it’s Meryl Streep but even the grand dame of cinema barely manages to render insipid in an interesting way. Kay is a boring housewife from boring middle America. Every morning she makes boring bacon and eggs for her boring husband who doesn’t appreciate them, when what she really wants is some spice in the sack. Tommy Lee Jones in gruff hubby mode is slightly more watchable, slouching through his daily routine like a gorilla with a sore head.

When the film finally relocates from suburban monotony to a picturesque seaside village (with the horribly on-the-nose name Great Hope Springs), it slides into another rut. In a series of couch sessions, Kay and Arnold gradually divulge their marriage problems to Steve Carell, whose comedic ability is utterly wasted as the couple’s benign and sympathetic therapist. Further aggravation arrives when emotional scenes are supposed to take hold, director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) giving us a shove by hammering the moment with an overbearing, easy listening soundtrack. Kay suffers from menopausal angst. As the years advance, she’s realising that, despite her expectations, things may never get any better. I had the same sensation watching this film. VESPA LOUNGE 17B ALLEN ST

Famed for its cocktail list and its jazzy atmosphere, Vespa is one of Welly’s most iconic venues in the city’s restaurant and bar district. Whether you are after a deep and meaningful conversation or a casual round of pool, this swanky bar caters to both.

SUBCULTURE 13-14 CHURCH ST, QUEENSTOWN

Chances are if you go out in the tourist capital you will lose your mind and make new overseas friends, but that’s all part of the fun. Kick off the night with some phat beats or live local acts at Subculture and pull out your best dance moves to attract a mate.

NORTHERN STEAM SHIP

What’s not to love about Northern Steamship? Let’s start with the first thing that hits you in the face: the décor. Who else could put upside down lamps on the ceiling and pull it off. They are like the alternative friend in the group that listens to Carly Rae Jepsen: they are different, but they don’t go all the way. Located in the heart of Britomart, Northern Steamship may look quirky, but its got a warm and inviting atmosphere every night of the week – particularly good for after work drinks by the heater. Not to mention their sweet lunch menu for lazy weekend days by the Quay.

Live From The Big Beach Bootique

Okay, sit back and close your eyes – just for a second at the least. A soft record crackle eases it’s way into your ear ways, Camille Yarborough’s one-hit-wonder creeps in “We’ve come a long, long way together — through the hard times and the good. I have to praise you like I should”. The “should” gets stuck on the needle and as it drags out you instantly recognise it not as the song that barely held up in the seventies but a track that is synonymous with one of the stalwarts of dance music. Surprisingly skinny Norman Cook has built a career on borrowing tracks, his plagiaristic style has somewhat cemented him as a party staple and champion of the turntable. In a career full of highlights like that big ol’ Brighton beach bash (The Big Beach Bootique II) that attracted 250 000 people to get their party on, Why Try Harder — an ambitious greatest hits album just ten years into his Fatboy era (2006) — and playing out of a giant fluorescent cephalopod at the London Olympics opening ceremony, how do you one up? By casually trying to create the biggest movie-theatre gig in recorded history.
This Friday (August 31st) Mr Slim will hit over 600 hundred cinema screens around the world through his anthemic back catalogue. The inspirational party-planner (of sorts) set-up shop in his hometown Brighton back in June at the local Amex Football Stadium with 40 000 others (probably his closest friends) and splashed out on an LED screen the size of a football pitch, pyrotechnics as-high-as office blocks and some sweet lighting. The idea is as ambitious as it is incredible, you do have to

remember though that this is a man who can turn ambition into reality — dreaming of pop stardom before DJ’ing could be considered a viable career.

The idea itself isn’t completely original; Don’t Think courtesy of The Chemical Brothers gate crashed a similar number of cinema’s back in February filmed in front of 10 000 more people than Fatboy’s effort at Japan’s 2011 Fuji Rock Festival and directed by Skins Adam Smith. I won’t digress into who is better but the pressure is on Cook. Live From The Beach Bootique was created as one of the biggest parties for the world’s cinemas to witness. While just witnessing it sounds exhilarating, there is a daunting question hanging over it; it’s in a cinema and cinema’s are one of the least practical party venues of all time. Are we being expected to sit down and watch the lucky revellers on screen with our iPhones off and a bucket of popcorn choking back the need to scream and sing? What becomes of the bump and grind? Will I be blinded by a Maglight as the ushers incessantly shush me when I take my top off and climb on the chair in front?

No matter what the ushers decide to do on Friday this is at the very least an opportunity to hold onto for the next time you meet that douche at a party who has openly seen everything — you’ll kick his face in with one-upper, “I have seen Fatboy Slim play at Brighton”.

FOR ALL THE B BOYS

INTRODUCING THE BREAKDANCING COMPETITION TAKING OVER THE DANCE FLOOR. B-boys: The Bomfunk MC’s sung about them putting their hands in the air with flygirls, but they are so much more than a catchy hook. Moving on from the 1990s, b-boys are making a name for themselves off the pages of bad Finnish songs and Step Up movie scripts. This weekend, the world’s most renowned break dancing competition Red Bull BC One will see the “flyest” and the “sickest” (getting down with the lingo) street dancers from Asia and Pacific compete for a spot in the World Final in Brazil later this year. Representing New Zealand are just two b-boys: Akron (Aron Mahika) and Grub D (David McCavitt), who are both members of the Christchurch ‘Common Crew’. The winners of the national preliminary events are going head-to-head with dancers from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong to name a few countries. So what is b-boying exactly? Well, for those of you who don’t know and take your cues from Hollywood movies, b-boying has its roots in 1970s hip-hop as a form of street dance popular in New York specifically. These days, dancers are found in every part of the globe and are bringing new and unique moves to the table – or street – every year. Red Bull BC One began much later in 2004 – in Switzerland of all places – and is known for attracting the top of their game from all over the world to compete for the title of world champion. New Zealand is one of the few countries chosen to host the qualifying rounds, including Mexico, USA and Russia. Not only that, the competitions tour is also bringing out the BC One All Stars – four

members of the world’s best b-boy crew. The boys will be blowing the audience’s mind with their gravity-defying moves. They are also imparting their wisdom onto future generations in a series of workshops during the lead up to this weekend’s show. The Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch tutorials will provide a unique insight into hip-hop culture and the evolution of the dance. “I’ve heard great things about New Zealand,” says current world champion Roxrite (USA). “I know the Asia-Pacific b-boys will have mad skills and I’m excited to see what moves they pull.” What can you expect from the show? These guys will be going hard to try to top what has already been done. And for an art form that’s over 30 years old, there are sure to be some new tricks to be taught. Hosting the event is the “Godfather of Noyze” Rahzel – American beatboxer and former member of The Roots. His legendary ability to sing/rap while simultaneously beatboxing has made him a well-known name and no doubt he’ll be keeping the dancers and crowd amped all night long. So settle in and watch these guys blow your mind. But we warn you now: don’t attempt to recreate these moves on the d-floor unless you know what you’re doing. Leave it to the professionals and save the embarrassment. WRITTEN BY Laura Weaser To register for the workshops email: bconeworkshops@hotmail.co.nz

Until Dawn – a schlocky horror game built for the PlayStation Move controller – certainly wasn’t something I would have normally encountered, but after seeing a level demoed, I’m intrigued to find out more. Even if only to find out which characters ultimately survive... It’s the videogame form of an infinite number of tacky, cheesy teen horror movies. The setting, dialogue and gameplay elements evoke everything from Evil Dead to Scream, and everything in between – and from what I saw, it’s at the very least got the atmosphere down pat. In Until Dawn, seven teenagers go on holiday to one of the kid’s parents’ luxury ski resorts in the mountains of British Columbia. As expected, some of them are horny and intent on doing something about it. Immediately, it’s clear the developers have nailed the dialogue. The first words in the chapter I saw played? “Exiled,” said the boy. “More like, ‘sexiled’,” replied the girl. It’s awful, but intentionally so, which is more than I can say for the majority of video games. Oh, and the chapter is called “If you go down in the woods today”. Love it. This tone is kept up throughout as two characters make their way through the woods to a secondary cabin and the pacing is spot-on: at first, they’re confident and teasing towards one another, trying to appear impressive. But as they go deeper into the woods, things start subtly going wrong and the dialogue becomes more and more fear-tinged. You play from a first-person perspective, switching between controlling the guy and girl as the story demands. The Move controller acts as one of your hands, one that’s most often holding a torch. It’s streamlined and simple, but the developers stressed that your input has impact – even to the point of influencing who survives at the end. The idea behind the game was for it to be just as watchable as it is playable and it was certainly immersive even when I was just a passive observer. The confidence and dedication to the teen horror genre really shows and the interactive nature of Until Dawn made it an oddly freaky experience. I’m eager to get some hands-on time myself – but maybe only with the light on. WRITTEN BY TRISTAN CLARK

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Moodie Tuesday is a boutique t-shirt label based in Dunedin. I have been exhibiting my art in galleries for some time and wanted to explore how art and fashion could be fused. Stemming from my passion for art, I developed ‘Moodie Tuesday’ with business partners Mackenzie Taiaroa and Chris Brun. The label’s vision can be summed up by the words of Pop Art legend Claes Oldenburg as “political-erotical-mystical, that does something other than sit on its ass in a museum.” Moodie Tuesday inspires to bring art to the streets and their line of t-shirts features Thom’s original artwork. Keep your eye out for a full menswear collection for Autumn/Winter 2013. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Steve McQueen comes to mind. He is definitely the King of Cool, his no-nonsense, rugged and masculine style made him a style icon in his own time and ours. What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? A$AP Rocky has a pretty amazing sense of style, wearing the likes of Jeremy Scott, Alexander Wang and Pigalle. I think he is pushing hip-hop and street fashion in a good direction. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Camo prints, I remember when camo was last cool, not sure how it came around so fast again. I won’t be digging out my zip off cargo pants again! Colours/patterns big this season? Blue is a key colour this summer, wallpaper florals and all over prints. What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? Good underwear and a well-fitted shirt. What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? A good pair of jeans, over sized tees and a nice cardigan. Everyone should own at least one good… Pair of shoes Hyphenate three words to describe your style: Classic-hobo-chic

YEASAYER

LAURA WEASER, TALKING FOOD FIGHTS, INSPITRATION AND LSD WITH FRONTMAN CHRIS KEATING.

How are you doing today? I’m in Wisconsin on the first day of tour. It was pretty good last night, the crowd was into it. There were about 1500 people and they were really into it. Going back to the start, what made you get into psychedelic/ experimental rock? I’m not sure. I think for some reason having an interest or looking for bizarre sounds, you eventually start venturing towards that for lack of a better term, so that’s what we liked. I don’t think the classification means anything. I think it’s only when you are forced to describe it you come up with some bullshit. Tell me about your third album. It was relaxed, and more moody. We are making a bit more somber record, the sounds are a bit more abrasive, it was a challenge to come up with something interesting and wasn’t repeating itself. It really bothers me when bands make the same album over and over again and no-one seems to care. We were trying to make a concerted effort to make something different and something that was a challenge for us to do. What did you do to achieve that? Treat the day like it was opposite day, wear different colours, underwear on the outside and walk backwards. It’s weird. Did you have any sounds in mind that you wanted to achieve? We used different synths and treated the guitar in bizarre ways. Some lines that sound like synths are actually vocal lines, using vocal layering technology that people like Kelly Clarkson use. You can get really interesting effects if you use it in a different way.

Where did you do the recording? In Brooklyn, about two blocks away from my house. It was cool, then we mixed it in London, but that wasn’t two blocks from my house. It was 200,000 miles, but it was worth it. It was ok, it was kind of cold. The dude we mixed with, Dan Carey, is a really talented bizarre dude, it was nice to have his input and hang in his studio for two or three weeks.

On your second album, Rolling Stone reports that you were inspired by New Zealand while experimenting with LSD. Tell me more? Yeah, we weren’t experimenting; we were just taking it (laughs). We were playing Wellington and Auckland at the end of the first album and we ended up in Auckland for a week or so, met some cool people, yeah, did some acid in a park in Auckland by the museum. It was what we did. It was Breast Cancer Awareness Day, so there were thousands of people in the park dressed in pink with butterfly wings and the lights were pink. We just walked around. It’s a beautiful park, the foliage is very different to anything in America. It was a beautiful place to hang out and think about music. How did it shape the second album? It was definitely an experience we had together, and we talked about doing a record. So New Zealand inspired the album. We should have called it something to New Zealand, I guess we weren’t thinking straight at the time. Favourite festival? Laneway was awesome, two years ago – that was the most fun. It was a touring festival so we were touring with friends. Packed in a plane full of ridiculous musicians and crazy people, so we were getting into food fights and stuff like that. Where do you get your inspiration? It’s the LSD man.
