Deftones have announced the release of their seventh studio album, Koi No Yokan will be available from Fri 09 Nov. Front man Chino Moreno summed up Deftones’ sound in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying, “Obviously we’re an aggressive band - not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack. He continues, “But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.” Chino Moreno has also stated that it has resemblance to their 2000 record, White Pony, when compared to their previous work.

DJs Grapevinyl and Cuba Street Hustle bring the jams this Sunday to roast day at BCC. It feels like having your very own garden party with a stocked and serviced bar. Win. If your hungover head can handle some sweet pounding bass, this is where you need to be.
There are four of them, it’s their fourth album and it’s called, well, Four. Thankfully, this is less indicative of a lack of imagination and more of a back-to-basics approach that sees Bloc Party eschewing many of the electronic flourishes which dominated their last two albums – opting instead for a heavier, guitar-oriented sound. It’s been three years since ‘One More Chance’ (which joined the likes of ‘Flux’ and ‘Two More Years’ as perfectly fine, stand-alone betweenalbums singles), and in that time guitarist Russell Lissack has toured with Ash while bandleader Kele Okereke went solo, releasing the brilliant Boxer and somewhat lessthan-stellar The Hunter. Back to the day job then, and while ‘V.A.L.I.S’ and ‘Truth’ would both fit comfortably on 2004’s unconquerable Silent Alarm, the choice of Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta) as producer sees Four step into some bludgeoning territory. ‘Team A’ and ‘Kettling’ both feature some insane soloing (the latter in particular brings to mind Shihad’s Killjoy), while the manic drum pattern on ‘3 x 3’ only relents in time to allow Okereke to chant “No means no!” as a high-pitched “Yes!” sounds out a background counterpoint. It’s heady stuff and the production sheen highlights their rock aspirations, which belies their indie roots. More familiar sounding perhaps is first single ‘Octopus’, which is indeed a many-tentacled beast with it’s Blur-esque triplewoohoo’s, spiderweb vocals, and ‘Banquet’-jangle.
However, the best tracks on Four are those that mess with the formula, notably the unexpected slide-acoustic (think Howl-era BRMC) intro to the two-and-a-half minute ‘Coliseum’, which then launches into a crazed riff amid Kele’s proclamation “The Empire never ended!” Likewise ‘The Healing’ – drawn from the same mould as Silent Alarm’s ‘So Here We Are’ and Intimacy’s ‘Biko’ – provides a welcome mellow break. Its slowly-percolating charms are much less overt than a lot of the album. Elsewhere, ‘Real Talk’ begins as a reggae-shuffle by way of The Strokes, before being overtaken by a great falsetto towards the end. The slightly aimless ‘Day Four’ is supposedly the next single, the melancholic lyrical edge offset by an underlying 80s chord progression which isn’t as far removed from say, Icehouse, as you might think. I know! Regardless, Bloc Party are a fine band and while there’s little here to trouble the likes of former touring mates Foals – who have progressed much further in the complex math-rock stakes – there’s enough experimentation to keep things interesting. It’s a dark investigation that goes beyond the scene of the crime to look at the aftermath affecting her family.

Writer/director Wes Anderson’s aesthetic leanings are difficult to define (Retro cute? Solemn whimsy? Painterly theatrics?), but very recognisable. His films are all composed with the precision of a Swiss watch, but they never completely lose sight of their humanity. Amongst all the elegantly affected framing and disarmingly effective music cues, the neuroses and desires of actual human beings shine through. His characters rarely behave like anyone who actually exists, but they remain relatable portraits. About halfway through Moonrise Kingdom, I feared Anderson’s dedication to visual and aural splendour had overcome his ability to tell a grounded story. That’s not to say I wasn’t enjoying myself. I’m all for films that are just about the aesthetics and this felt like the 300 of art house flicks. Shallow, but a joy to behold.
As the film approached the conclusion, however, a sense of underlying emotional richness began to shine through and I was able to embrace the story on all levels. Maybe it was the youth of the leads that initially kept me at arm’s length – no kids have ever talked or behaved like these two do. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand make the absolute most of their relatively brief screen time, but the real revelation in the film’s cast (beyond the insanely talented young leads) was Bruce Willis as the local Sheriff. I can’t remember the last time he was this good. As the most Wes Anderson-ish film Wes Anderson has ever made, Moonrise Kingdom won’t convert any naysayers to the cause, but fans of his work will have a ball. WRITTEN BY DOMINIC CORRY, FLICKS.CO.NZ

Large Adorations “We started our collaboration around the fall of 2009”, wrote Annie Clark (St Vincent) on the project’s website earlier this year, “after being approached to write and perform a night of new music for charity.” Modest beginings for one of the most exciting music collaboration in, well, ages! A decision was made quite early in the piece to centre their efforts around - wait for it a brass band. Mutlally they liked the idea of the power and funk behind the potential, and so a mass exchange of ideas back and forth in every form: “wordless melodies, melody-less songs”. Byrne, for his part and first Clark her after the Dark Was The Night benefit concert at Radio City (organized by the Red Hot Organization) and then by coincidence they were both at charity gigs by NYC’s Housing Works – a charity that provides medical care. They were asked to collaborate on a fundraiser. “Annie suggested we use a brass band rather than the typical rock ensemble,” he writes on the website,”which would brilliantly solve the sound problems inherent in performing in a small joint like Housing Works. A brass band wouldn’t need mixing and could be heard acoustically in a room that size. They’d balance themselves”. Indeed even their early work was pretty funky, featuring elements from Byrnes early years with Talking Heads and his Brazilian influenced solo work. Juxtaposed throughout is Clark’s brilliantly disturbing arty signatures. “It was suggested,” says Byrne,”(that) we should write some tunes based on this brass concept, just a few to see if we could actually work together and to see if we both liked the results.” Well, time passed, music was exchanged, mixed and critiqued and “eventually we had a handful of songs and mutually decided that the concept was working and we would continue. I (still) found that writing words to this brass-centric sound meant I had to rethink my lyrical approach. Brass has many associations—marching bands, Italian banda, New Orleans bands, classical chorales, RnB and funk. In general it’s not a subtle sound, so the words had to respond to that”. And they did, working with a group of arrangers, usually passing midi versions of the parts created on computers. Then there was the individual work programmes, the release of albums, tours etc. “We both had other records and tours in the works, so this project was done in fits and starts”, but “by the beginning of 2012, we could see the end in sight and became more serious about wrapping it up and planning a series of performances. We did a photo session with photographer Richard Burbridge and Gabe Bartalos for the cover art and invited artist Steve Powers to create some typographical work to go over that”. The final result Love this Giant comes out on Fri 07 Sep, with the first single “Who” available on their website. Naturally tours are in final stages with Kelly Pratt (Bright Moments) leading a live brass ensemble group to tour with Byrne and Clark. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is the follow up to High Moon’s earlier Transformers: War for Cybertron. Since developing the earlier game, the studio has improved on the gameplay variety, fixed a few of the earlier title’s issues, and kept the combat familiar. The game spans 13 missions, split between controlling multiple Transformers on either side – in a similar way to War for Cybertron. In typical 1980’s fashion, some new characters show up out of nowhere while a couple of Decepticon jets from War for Cybertron are nowhere in sight. Although it offers a little more freedom in level design, Fall of Cybertron is about as linear as War for Cybertron. In addition, the levels are pretty short; this isn’t necessarily a bad thing – just as you’re sick of using one Transformer, you’re moving on to the next. There are a few issues: you may get stuck on an object or on the wrong side of a booster pad and need to slide to get out of it, which could easily get you killed. There are also plenty of cheap traps, reducing it to trial-and-error in parts. To its credit, Fall of Cybertron has addressed one of the key problems with War for Cybertron – the shortage of ammo in heavy firefights. Ammo is almost in abundance in every combat situation and visiting a store instantly restores your health and ammo to full. There are dozens of lines from the movies and nods to the cartoon throughout the game. While a remix of Stan Bush’s ‘The Touch’ is played during the credits, the Transformers do things they probably shouldn’t – canonically speaking, at least – in the background. Overall, it’s a superior game to War for Cybertron – from fixing the ammo situation to having a more variety in gameplay. The fact that you aren’t playing through two campaigns, which are virtually the same helps. It still offers up more for the aging Transformers fan, than the younger shooter fanatic. It was a friend’s probing question that got me thinking about what it is that makes Game of Thrones so epic. Her question was, “So tell me, is it really as gory and sexual as I imagine it to be?” Yes, it is a lot of throat-splitting, rough sex, incest, beheading, rapes, torture and breasts. If you think you can look past these taboo scenes to enjoy what is also a fantastic and gripping medieval tale, then read on. Game of Thrones is based on a series of books called A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, adapted for TV by David Benioff (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and D. B. Weiss. The multi-layered series focuses on several families fighting to be the one to sit on the Iron Throne and have ultimate control over the land. It chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among the kingdom’s noble families. Key families include the Starks at Winterfell, hardened Northerners led by Ed Stark; the Lannisters from King’s Landing are rich beyond compare and equally and manipulative and the Targaryens. (This is but a few, I’m serious when I say there are too many to name). Each episode focuses on different storylines, the first season is more of an introduction and season two is leading for battle. So what makes GOT (as it is known by those in the know) so good and scores it rave reviews around the world? It’s not just one element, but the way each piece ties in perfectly together to keep you gripped without leaving you totally hanging and then under delivering.

Characters are a combination of good, bad, and downright disgusting. There is no holding back as women are mistreated, children are killed and the good don’t always come out victorious. And I love it. It’s the medieval times, things were far worse than they are now and far more barbaric. Good characters often find themselves in strife, unfairly, which often had me nearly in tears or cringing with fear. To feel something for the characters is the hardest thing to do in my opinion, but GOT really draws you in. There are characters I hate, some I find irritating and some I love. Emotional investment is the key to attachment and it makes or breaks a series. In terms of story development, there is always something different. One minute you are witnessing a series of head-lops, the next you are away over the desert watching a rouge learn to love his Queen in a moment of tenderness – all in the same minute. It’s a rollercoaster that keeps you on your toes and glued to the screen. GOT is incomparable to any other TV series. Unlike other “sword and sandals” type series or films, the violence and sex are not gratuitous, but an important part of the plot just as much as the dialogue.
