Video gamers of Aotearoa put November 30th in your iphone calenders. That’s the date Nintendo will be unleashing the all new Wii U here. The most noticeable change as the original Wiis successor is the option of expandable hard drive via SD card or USB, and the controller entitled the Wii U GamePad. If the Sony PSP and Apple iPad got together the GamePad would be their lovechild. An imbedded touchscreen modelled on a tablet, that allows the user to continue playing with out the need for a TV. Available in black or white with several additional add ons, the basic version is set to retail for around NZ $479.

So, over the weekend Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong went on a bit of a tirade on stage at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas. The on-stage outburst began when the teleprompter said that the band had one minute left of their performance. Armstrong responded with “I’m not fucking Justin Bieber” and then proceeded to smash his guitar on the stage. On Monday morning it was announced that the angry frontman had admitted himself in to rehab “Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas.”

Headlined by Doctor P, Funtcase, Cookie Monsta, Slumdogz and Krafty MC with support from New Zealand’s very own Taniwha Bassline.

A hippo on crack? Something out of a Flight of the Conchords song? Nope, one guy, a stellar voice, a few microphones and a loop pedal to make sweet music. The London-based solo artist from Madrid, Spain has wowed audiences and now it’s our turn.

Daymn! Back when I was in high school these guys were the shiz, with their Phil Collins sampler on ‘Home’ and all their thug life ways of living. Well, apparently they are still going and still getting their swag on. Check out their special New Zealand concert.

Coffee and classical music? Just as Mozart would have liked it. This concert presents Mozart’s Turkishflavoured Piano Sonata in A major, K: 331, presented on a copy of a Viennese fortepiano from 1795 together with “period” sound effects and remixed by his contemporaries.

9PM, $10, UNDERTHERADAR.CO.NZ

Razorwyre are stoked to be releasing their debut album Another Dimension, and are throwing a party to celebrate. In addition to their classic thrash/speed metal, the band say their debut material will raise a few eyebrows with some new sounds. Special guests Beastwars and Meth Drinker feature.

Tight bright pants, long wavy hair, hairless chests: it’s not a throwback to a rave scene, it’s Steel Panther, reviving the proud tradition of ‘80s glam metal. Either way they have supported the biggest acts of their inspiration including Gunners, Motley and Def Leppard.

TOUR

You don’t get to tour with Daft Punk, headline Rhythm & Vines or sit higher on the bill at Parklife than say genre winners Passion Pit or Nero without good reason and so it is that The Presets hang those titles in their already impressive trophy cabinet. Four years of quiet downtime to focus on fatherhood have passed and the Sydneysider’s return with album three – to a market flush with electronic. Can they hold up against the likes of Modular label-mates Cut Copy in the age of Australian electro? Probably, Pacifica is a true tribute to their talents as musicians.
Electronic music has a bad rap as theme music for the hedonistic pillpopping, bass-woofing scenester youth who lurk in dark clubs and venture out only to power chuck on the side walk. While there may be truth in saying that crowd will enjoy them, The Presets already proved with 2008’s Apocalypso that they have wider appeal, managing to hold chart space for over a year in our Tasman cousin’s single’s list. Both vocalist/ keyboardist Julian Hamilton and drummer/keyboardist Kim Moyes are classically trained music geeks and as their catalogue grows their intelligence shines through too. This release is a far cry from debut Beams, an at times too-far sighted gamble in the realms of techno experimentation.

and an exploration into the flaws of the lucky country. There’s a message and clear agenda that is, although most relevant in Australia, universal. The text is easily the definitive characteristic of Pacifica it’s an un-pretentious and emotionally delicate observation far-flung from the occasional arrogance of its predecessor.

Opener ‘Youth In Trouble’ is a stridulant interpretation of fear, panic and madness associated with the worlds youth told to us with Hamilton’s intoning deep voice, it’s very senatorial and reeks of New Order. There’s an expedition away from the ballsy, almost evil, deep vocals into the realms of falsetto that demonstrates a wide vocal range and doesn’t detract at all. ‘Promises’ showcases this range and is incredibly pop intuitive. The best track is ‘Ghosts’, it’s an up tempo techno take on classic folk/sea shanty style with peaks and valleys flawlessly completed with the compellingly powerful lyrics. Pacifica has raised the benchmark; The Presets are out in front and once again demonstrate their aptitude in defining the genre. WRITTEN BY JUSTIN FOWLER

Pacifica is a bold step forward, wrapping a novellic sentiment into their musical talents and persuasive beats. The lyrical element of this record is arguably a take on the concept album. It’s truly Australian

THURSDAY 27 HUNG - SEASON 2 Premiere

RUBY SPARKS

SOHO, 9.00PM

Kicking off the second season of the wickedly seductive TV show, Hung begins its 10-episode season dropping in on Ray (Thomas Jane), now coaching baseball, as he faces teacher layoffs. Suddenly, the importance of his side business (male prostitution) is more important. The second season focuses on the complex dynamic between Ray and his two pimps, Tanya (Jane Adams) and Lenore (Rebecca Creskoff).

directed by JONATHAN DAYTON, VALERIE FARIS Starring PAUL DANO, ZOE KAZAN AND ANNETTE BENING

TRUE BLOOD - Season Finale PRIME, 9.30PM

As season five draws to a close, Eric embarks on a final, desperate mission to overthrow the Authority and save Bill from losing his humanity. Meanwhile, Andy faces the consequences of a Light Pact he made, Alcide readies for a second showdown with JD, and Sam and Luna test their limits in trying to escape the Authority.

LOOPER GENERAL RELEASE

118 mins

From the brilliant mind behind TV’s Breaking Bad, director Rian Johnson brings a sci-fi tale about a “looper” – a hitman whose targets are sent to him from the future (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). However, his lucrative career comes under fire when he recognizes a new hit as an older version of himself (played by Bruce Willis).

EMBARRASSING OLD BODIES

Ruby Sparks revolves around one of those high concept ideas that I generally have a low tolerance for. ‘Man creates fictional girl, girl comes to life’ sounded a bit like a Weird Science for the indie set and I was primed to throw the word ‘quirky’ all over this review. Sure enough, the film does trade in the slightly melancholy, slightly funny filmmaking that Sundance loves and that I’m exhausted of. But, by the end of Ruby Sparks, I was won over. Kind of. The first half of the film was more or less what I was expecting – a Manic Pixie Dream Girl male fantasy. I should’ve been clued in by the fact Ruby Sparks was written by lead actress Zoe Kazan though, because the film slowly reveals a more feminine perspective, which leads to a dark turn of events in the

third act. Ruby Sparks also ends up making some reasonably astute observations about relationships, love, and what we expect from our significant others. Paul Dano does reliably good work as the literary genius with writer’s block, Kazan easily transcends the ‘quirky girl’ role her script requires, and both Antonio Banderas and Annette Bening turn in warm performances with a limited amount of screen time. Oh, and Steve Coogan could play the kind of slimy twerp he does here in his sleep at this point, but it’s always great to see him. By the end, I’d forgotten how silly the whole thing was, and enjoyed Ruby Sparks as the sweet little modern fable it’s aiming to be. WRITTEN BY TONY STAMP, FLICKS.CO.NZ

RAKINOS LEVEL 1/35 HIGH STREET

Coffee, tea, cocktails, dining or dancing. Whatever you are in the mood for, Rakinos has it. Famous for Thursday night ‘Keep Calm and Listen to Hip-Hop’, Thursday through to Sunday is where it is at for live music for those with feet itching to dance. With a full breakfast & lunch menu, and comprehensive drinks range.

GOLDEN DAWN 134 PONSONBY ROAD

Last year, these guys embarked on a mission to bring gourmet wines from all over Europe, with the bulk of them Beaujolais and Sicilian, as well as some beautiful drops from Greece and Portugal. Some wines are even certified organic and spray free.

SOUTHERN CROSS

The Cross is the epitome of Wellington life and culture. Like five different bars rolled into one, the eclectic place has something for everyone. A funky ‘70s-style back room looks like a throwback to your parents’ first lounge area, the garden bar (with carefully placed coloured lanterns) has a true festival atmosphere, and inside the dance floor is big enough to accommodate some Saturday night chaos, Sunday samba or live music every other night of the week.

EAT

SHIT WORTH EATING

BURGER WISCONSIN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

NATIONWIDE

For diners who are wanting more from their burger experience. Despite being American by name, Burger Wisconsin is not by nature with 100% New Zealand ingredients. Taste sensations like tandoori, coriander lime mayo and blue cheese mayo have made them a hit since 1989.

BLACKSAND 17 BOW STREET

RAGLAN

Located right by the famous shores of Raglan, sit by the window and enjoy the smell of the ocean air and watch the surfer babes walk past this summer while you sip on your coffee, or, my favourite, chocolate milkshake.

HERNE BAY LOCAL

Nestled in the suburban hub of Herne Bay, the Jervois Road Village ‘local’ is a quaint eatery with a range of food throughout the day. From Asian-influenced tapas and platters to a fantastic bistro style lunch and dinner menu, Local has it all. With a retro ‘70s feel to the wooden styling of the décor, it’s like a home away from home… but with better food.

The 2nd Law is unlike any other Muse album. It may seem like a sweeping statement, and one that is hard to back up after the band has produced progressive rock using everything from synths to classical piano across their five previous chart topping albums. But, from the band’s own mouth, they admit this new album is the most diverse piece they have put together. “We spent a lot of time experimenting with a lot of things, with the music and sounds in particular, and I think that’s why this album has this kind of freshness to it,” says bassist Chris Wolstenholme. “I think on this album we kind of have electro pop, we have classic rock and we also have pretty much orchestral, soundtrack style music. I think these three things have become quite separate on this album and it’s great because it almost feels like I’m in three different bands,” says lead singer Matt Bellamy. Their highly anticipated sixth studio album has been a long time coming. Muse planned to record this time in 2011, with a release date of October 2012. During the buildup to the release date, Matt tweeted that the album was a “Christian gangsta rap jazz odyssey, with some ambient rebellious dubstep and face melting metal flamenco cowboy psychedelia.” Was he kidding? If the “trailer” for the album’s release was anything to go by, maybe not. The trailer, punctuated with Transformers-sex dubstep and random images of politics, news and war, was met with critical confusion and fans weren’t sure what to think. Some said it was “bloody brilliant until the dubstep kicked in”, “the dubstep made me sad” and “absolutely amazing as always”. But ultimately, any critical complaint was silenced when Muse blew the London Olympic Stadium away at the 2012 Olympic closing ceremony. Their song ‘Survival’ harked back to Muse’s earlier work on ‘Butterflies and Hurricanes’, with a side of ‘Plug In Baby’, guitar wails and piano chords filling the arena alongside Matt’s distinctive voice. “We kind of threw everything at it,” says drummer Dominic Howard. “We got the choir in, which we’ve never done before. It just added that extra operatic vibe to the song which really took it into this much more epic kind of place really and it goes on a very epic journey. “I think it’s a very Muse sounding song ‘Survival’ and by the end of it, it was just that we wanted to push it as far as we could with like the bombastic feeling of the song and right at the end we put the choir in with those chords building up, and Matt sings the highest note he’s ever sang and you think his head’s gonna explode.” Like Muse’s previous work, there is clearly an undertone of thinking man’s material, with images of political torment and struggle against the institution that echoes throughout their work. The title itself comes from a place of crisis: political, economic and financial, as well as from some hypothesising in Matt’s head. “The 2nd law of thermodynamics tells us that energy basically is decreasing,” he explains. “Unfortunately, it seems to be decreasing everywhere. You know, the universe is spreading out. The energy in our bodies and the earth and the sun and the stars and so on seems to be gradually cooling down. So I became interested in what this means because evolution and humans seem to be going directly against this second law. “ With that in mind as the driving force behind the album, it’s surprising the song sounds don’t add up to this crazy view of the world. There is ‘Supremacy’, filled with a “big sleazy metal riff”, ‘Madness’, with “a very rough kinda bass synth with a repetitive hook”, ‘Panic Station’ which is just, ”a really fun track”, and a bit of Nero to top it off appearing on another track titled ‘Follow Me’. The genre-lawbreakers are at it again, producing another musical journey challenge the notion of rock and roll that is the key to their success. “We’re all just very lucky to be in a band with open minded people who are not really afraid to try anything,” Matt enthuses.

The 24th year of New Zealand’s institutional music 101 contest, the SMOKEFREEROCKQUEST, culminated in Hamilton’s Founders Theatre on Saturday night with Nelson proving itself as an incubator of young talent for a second year running.

Nelson College lads New Vinyl beat out home crowd-heroes Sunday Best and six other finalists from the over 700 entries chasing this year’s prize with their “quirky three-piece jazz-folk sound”. It’s the second year running a Nelson band has taken top spot – The Peasants of Nelson’s Garin College took home the silver last year. Smokefreerockquest founder and director Pete Rainey said “We can be really proud that Nelson kids are getting great support from their teachers and from this event. Glenn (Common, co-founder and director) and I can just enjoy Nelson’s success - although the event is organized from Nelson, we are completely outside the judging process.” The boys’ (Ed Palmer, Alex Farrell-Davey, Allister Meffan) were the only South Island representatives and what they lacked in way of bused-insupporters they made up for with an impressively captivating set. They played ‘Sebastian,’ Singer/Guitarist Farrell-Davey introducing it as “about a really good friend of mine called Sebastian,” and ‘Somethin’ I Ain’t Seen’ – a song about dancing. The acoustic set had an almost prosaic charm over the auditorium and evoked reference to the sounds of Beirut or Boy & Bear. The set also showcased a snapshot of year 12 student Meffan’s musical talent who took on the role of piano-accordionist, trumpeter & percussionist. Farrell-Davey said Meffan underpins the band. “He can play a freakish amount of instruments.” Palmer, at home on the double bass, admitted he’d only picked it up two weeks before competition started. Stating “if you put the cello and the electric bass together you get a double bass,” in reference to his other talents. When asked to name their influence’s Meffan laughed “say cool bands,” before rattling off a list of impressive indie-folk acts including Beirut, Grizzly Bear & Josh Rouse. They were overwhelmingly thankful for their inspirational drama teacher Luke Walton’s help along the way and planned

to celebrate at a restaurant they’d spotted in Hamilton called Golden Dog. Speaking candidly about the future of New Vinyl they said they would be spending the summer together before year 13’s Palmer and Farrell-Davey leave town to embark on life. Palmer is off to Otago University and see’s his future in music as a hobby while Farrell-Davey, who has dabbled as a solo musician, has his sights on a gap year in Melbourne – lured by its musical charms. Meffan still has one year to complete at school. They take home riches including $10,000 worth of instruments from NZ Rockshops and their suppliers, a NZ On Air new recording and music video grant worth over $10,000, a place on the NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc, radio promotional support for a single, and video play on youth music channel Four.

Other winner’s on the night were Indi (Indira Force) a bubbly Auckland singer/songwriter went home with second place, Northland couple Luke & Amberly (Luke Rielly and Amberly Shepherd) took third and were presented the Low Down Best Song Award by Midnight Youth’s Matt Warman. The Skinny People’s Choice went to Heroes For Sale; the MAINZ Scholarship for outstanding musicianship went to Drummer Joshua Wrightson of A Reflection Of Yesterday; the APRA Lyric Award was bagged by Claudia Jardine and The Smokefree Women’s Musicianship Award went to Ruby Walsh, Getting Up Backwards.
This year’s finalists were (in order of appearance): Luke & Amberly; Indi; Sunday Best; Noriac; New Vinyl; A Bit Nigel (second year at finals); Intone; Culture Kids. They shared the stage with sets from The Jury & The Saints and Zowie.

Skylanders seemed to come out of nowhere, as long-gestating products that are the result of years of hard graft are wont to do. Resurrecting the somewhat dormant Spyro franchise and combining it with physical collectable toys turned out to be a masterstroke for Activision and the franchise is now adored by millions of younger gamers around the world. A continuation of the series, Skylanders: Giants has more of an expansion feel than a full-blown sequel, but it looks meaty, and – importantly – is accompanied by a lot of new characters, and therefore figurines. A quick recap on how this all works: Skylanders is a third-person action/adventure starring a menagerie of characters to play as. Similar to the Lego series, each character has a certain set of abilities that allow them to interact with the world around them in different ways. To use a character, you need their (physical) figurine. The game comes with a Portal of Power, a device that you place figurines on. The moment you do, the appropriate character pops up in the game and away you go. Swapping between different characters feels strangely cool when you’re physically switching them around – sure, it’s a blatant money grab for a mechanic that could have easily been accomplished in game, but it does add to the immersion. The most obvious difference to the original is the size of your characters: while not necessarily all that giant, they are certainly a lot bigger than the earlier versions, and this brings a few gameplay changes: evil minions can be swatted away more easily, some puzzles can simply be smashed through, and different areas can be reached. Cross-compatibility of all the characters is one of the big features of Giants: you’ll be able to use both old and new figurines alike. It won’t be for everyone, but if you’ve got kids in your life, chances are they’ve either already fallen for this or are highly susceptible to doing so. Look out for all the new toys and the new game in mid-October. All major platforms are supported, so if you’ve got a console under your TV, chances are you’re in with a grin. ENCORE

THE COMEDIAN’S NONSTOP ATTITUDE HAS SEEN HIM GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH. “I cannot confirm or deny which brand of mobile phone I am talking to you on,” exclaims comedian Rhys Darby, “but I can say that that company has recently appeared on my bank statement.” As a debtor or creditor, we’ll never know. I imagine the voice of Murray Hewitt going “Ah ha. A dilemma you’ll never solve now. Bring it up at the next band meeting!” Of course, Murray Hewitt is an important part of Rhys Darby’s life. “Yes, even now people will lean over the fence and shout ‘Gudday, Murray’.” Actually ‘Murray’ began life as Brian Nesbitt, the Flight of the Conchords dim witted, but well-intentioned manager in the BBC radio series of the same name. Darby on the other hand started in a way different career, as a soldier (signaller trained in morse code) in the New Zealand Army in the mid ‘90’s before moving on to study at the University of Canterbury. In 1996 he formed his first comedy duo, Rhysently Granted, with Grant Lobban (where they actually did win an open mic contest at a local bar). The team did a couple of international comedy festivals which led to Darby heading to the big smoke of the Auckland comedy scene and eventually a solo show at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. From there Darby moved to the UK to pursue his career further. At the same time, fellow Kiwis and friends Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement were trying out Edinburgh and through various iterations the FOC standup routine grew into a sitcom, albeit a very Kiwi version. In 2004 he appeared in the Flight of the Conchords BBC radio series as the band’s manager Brian Nesbit alongside comedy stars such as Rob Brydon, Andy Parsons and Jimmy Carr. “Rob was brought in after we had finished. He had this role as the voice over to point out all the foibles and mistakes of the duo, but in the obvious voice of a reality TV show overdub.” A favorite part of the radio show was when Brian constantly called up an awkward, irritated Neil Finn for managerial advice. “Actually, Neil was asking us, all the time, ‘Was that funny enough, was I funny?’ He probably didn’t realize deadpan humour is all about being funny by not actually trying.” The laidback Kiwi approach to humour! Darby was definitely a bid surprised when he was brought in to be Murray for the HBO series, which was sold on the strength of the BBC show.

With many doors opened before, during and after FOC’s fame, Darby has done a number of films, including playing Angus the Nut in the Pirate Radio comedy The Boat The Rocked and Jim Carrey’s Yes Man and by now he’s appeared on various local TV shows – such as 7 Days – UK children shows, and even Aussie talk shows (Rove). So, obviously his upcoming stand up show This way to Spaceship is auto biographical? “We yes-ish! I mean a real biography might come late,” he says. “This is sort of like Janet Frame – a fictional true autobiography. The show sort of follows the book (of the same name, recently released) with some adaption. I wake up aboard the spaceship – by the way Jermaine Clement plays the voice of the ship – and I’m asked to look back upon my life – the perfect entre to stand up comedy. The show’s an autobio-self-help manual with an apocalyptic ending!” Rhys Darby explodes onto the stage of the CBS Canterbury Arena on October 3.
