FOREVER LONG?
At the Foo Fighters end of tour show in New York on Saturday night Dave Grohl exclaimed “Without making a big deal out of it, we don’t have any shows after this. This is it, man.” “This is the show where we come out and we play as many songs as we can in a short period of time, because, honestly, I don’t know when we’re gonna do it again and this is the perfect place to do it, right now, tonight.” Sad times for Foo Fighters fans?

Shit Worth Knowing
PLAYING TESTING, TESING, 1,2,3 FAVourites GET READY FOR SUMMER: R&V’S SOUNDCHECK HAS A LINE-UP TO HAVE YOU IN THE CAR AND WAITING TO ROADTRIP.
JESSE PEACH DIRECTOR
The fabulous crew that bring you Rhythm & Vines (R&V), the annual New Year’s party in Gisborne, are teaming up with masters the Ambient Group for the exciting live music event, Soundcheck. Topping the bill will be British Electronic act Nero (live), dubstep producer/DJ Rusko and rising UK singer-songwriter and record producer Labrinth, all supported by local mischief makers Home Brew.
Who’s in the dead supergroup for your dream hologram show? Ella Fitzgerald and Freddie Mercury. What’s an upcoming film you’re jazzed about? Les Misérables. Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? Piha or 23 Cafe. What happens when you mix Coca-Cola with Pepsi? Pregnancy. Your fantasy spirit animal is… A sloth. Your signature “I’m an amazing cook” dish is… Roast lamb.
You’ll know about Nero. They’ve done Aotearoa several times, gaining a stupendous rep as the go-to masters. Back in 2010, ‘Electron’ was pumping the stage and it still goes off. You may have caught them at the final Big Day Out earlier this year, rockin’ up a storm in the Boiler Room. Normally the crew’ll do a DJ set, but this time it’s Nero themselves performing atop a huge stack of speakers/TVs/cassettes and other 8bit generation styled icons, mixing visuals and sound of mammoth proportions! They’ll rope in vocalist Alana and the lads (Joseph and Dan) are planning some Daft Punk-esque neon lit visors for a sartorial spurge. Then there is Rusko, the producer behind Britney Spears, the collaborator with Cypress Hill and the creator of more club air time than you’d care to mention. Rusko aka Christopher Mercer, dubstep extraordinaire, hails from Leeds and has caught the plane over before, playing the ASB Showgrounds back in early 2011. Apparently the gig was closed down for the use of “excessive bass”! With his floppy Mohawk flying around as he bounces on stage with an explosion of energy, he’s a force to be reckoned with.
Labrinth, known to his mum and nine siblings as Timothy McKenzie, might be Simon Cowell’s only non-TV act, but he’s made waves providing the beats for Tinie Tempah and Dizzee Rascal. Best known for the track ‘Earthquake’, which fuses dubstep, R&B, hip hop, dance and monastic music into four minutes and 35 seconds of explosive excellence, he’s a man who lives his philosophies large! “My whole ethos is musical freedom,” he said in a recent interview. “I’ve really learnt that while developing myself over the last year.” The journey continues this October! One thing to note is that this year’s event has moved from Thursday to Friday night, with an R16 rating, making it more accessible for all. Of course, in keeping with the R&V flavour, organisers say the Soundcheck line-up will vary from the line-up for this year’s Rhythm & Vines in Gisborne, but will still provide some stonking beats for the city folk to enjoy! SEE THEM LIVE: R&V SOUNDCHECK FRI 05 OCT VECTOR ARENA, AUCKLAND
The best TV show around at the moment is… The Ridges, right? The best place for a date night is… Kura. You’d get arrested if the police knew that you… Have dated five actors from different plays I’ve directed. People say you look like… Grayson Coutts. Gets confusing being mistaken for my best friend’s boyfriend.

From the band that couldn’t make up their mind (because they are ambidextrous), comes a project that was clearly well thought out. This fundraising gig is designed to get the band across the ditch to embark on their Australian album release tour. Go Kiwi go!
There’s something funky up in here, sounds kinda like summer. Oh wait, it’s Tahuna Breaks! Their forthcoming album may not be hitting the stands until 2013, but to celebrate the release of their second single ‘Smooth’, they figured, why not gig about a bit? TOUR
The last we heard from Amanda was a self-released collection of road ditties that connected well with this part of the world because virtually every song had some innate connection with Australian or New Zealand – especially ‘Map of Tasmania’, which is about her, umnether-er-area!. Giggles aside, Palmer loves this part of the world and chose to make here latest album in Melbourne because it gave her the opportunity to enjoy the laid back culture from down under and to work with a bunch of “reconnaissance hacks … with musical super powers”: Michael Mcquilken, Chad Raines, Jherek Bischoff and producer/engineer John Congleton (“who’s worked with a zillion amazing people including St. Vincent, Modest Mouse, and Xiu Xiu”, according to Palmer). For various reasons, including the apathy of her former record company, Roadrunner, Palmer took to crowd sourcing to fund her latest record. And how! Raising over $1 million to record and tour the thing. Opening in pure cabaret, there’s the dark growls of the Weimar, courtesy of Australian artiste Meow Meow, before an explosion from the Grand Theft Orchestra of the ultranegative “Smile”. Is this some kind of reaction to Brian Wilson? An early highlight, ‘The Killing Type’, has a Talking Headsinspired chorus, with Palmer insisting she’s all innocent whilst clearly insinuating the opposite in perfect, dark pop. But my favourite has got to be ‘Do it with a Rock Star’ – “Do you wanna dance, Do you wanna fight, Do you wanna get drunk and stay the night?” A delicious glam-rock
proposition from an ego so big even Robert Plant was checking his look in the mirror. But all the while, she’s all the reasons her conquest should stay, all the while coming across as apprehensive and coy. “Wait, wait, wait – I’ll be fine in a minute”, ‘Grown Man Cry’ just scares me, starting out as a gawd-awful ’80s power ballad, complete with slamming doors, reverb for Africa and, Hallmark Card sentiment. That’s until Palmer gets hold of the neck and vigorously shakes the F-Off-punk cabaret-bejesus out of it. Elsewhere, more thumping on ‘Lost’, recalling Sleeper and Echobelly and a bit of New Romantics. ‘The Bed Song’ is devastating, but alarmingly funny. ‘Massachusetts Avenue’ describes a situation we’ve all experienced – a road in our hometown which vividly reminds us of someone is a drive down road she’s done before, if you remember ‘The Jeep Song’. Just watch she doesn’t run you down in the process. No doubt Theatre Is Evil is Palmer’s new masterwork, taking its influences from glam rock, new wave and punk. The hooks are epic, lyrics are clever, humorous and dark, but you can still rock out and spray paint your ex’s car or jump your boss. Either way, it’s Palmer at her usual, intense, witty, gothic best – except with a full on band. Strange in a way, because I’ve always just imagined Palmer bashing away on the keys, centre of attention, hands playing, brain and mouth somewhere else and all utterly engaging. Now, it’s like and Army of Palmers. Prepare to repel invaders. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

GENERAL RELEASE
95 MINS
Forget what you think you know about the 80s Stallone-style Judge Dredd. New Zealand’s own Karl Urban is a new, tougher, gun-hardy Dredd, out to inflict some serious justice on the drug taking crazies. More closely based on the comic strip of the same name prepare for bone-crunching, blood-spitting, teeth-pulling brilliance.
PITCH PERFECT GENERAL RELEASE
112 MINS
Toted about as this year’s Mean Girls, this is about the highs and lows of an a cappella singing group out to hit all the right notes. High school cliques and bitching one-liners ensure some solid comedy moments. Starring Anna Kendrick (Twilight) and Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids).
BREAKING BAD FOUR, 10:30PM
The wildly addictive and outrageously successful Breaking Bad comes to its finale once again as season four draws to a close. Things are heating up and about to get explosive as Walt (Bryan Cranston) decides it’s time to make sure Skyler (Anna Gunn), Junior (RJ Mitte) and Holly are safely ensconced at Hank’s house. Will everything go to plan? Probably not. You don’t want to miss this.
SUNDAY 07
directed by RIAN JOHNSON Starring JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT, BRUCE WILLIS AND EMILY BLUNT
It comes as a relief that Rian Johnson’s time travel crimenoir Looper attempts to minimise the convoluted mechanics of time travel where it can. The film’s conceptually meaty premise – hitmen called “loopers” knocking off targets sent from the future – only offers a one-way street, while it also takes a moment to sit its protagonists down to have a tongue-in-cheek exchange about not scrutinising too intensely how it all works (“We’ll only end up drawing diagrams on the table with straws”). The first half of the film zips along like the dream movie Johnson was born to make, jammed with clever ideas and dynamic direction. From the room-silencing blunderbuss bang of the first execution, Looper’s pleasures are plenty: an economically imagined near-future with elements of extreme class divide, genetic mutation and hovering transportation; the surprisingly gruesome consequence of a looper failing to “close the loop”; the delightfully tense confrontation
between Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s junkie looper Joe and his older self, played by Bruce Willis. Gears shift in the second portion considerably, slackening the kinetic thrills and stranding young Joe out in a cornfield with Emily Blunt and her weirdo son. It’s tricky to discuss without ruining crucial plot developments, but a search for a master criminal is involved, and if Johnson doesn’t quite have the means to pull off a completely emotional ending, he deserves kudos for taking things into a slightly risky, left-field path that’s all too rare in movies these days. Gordon-Levitt’s make-up is unnecessarily elaborate, but he does good Willis – maybe even better than Willis himself, whose range seems to have shrunken, if possible, so much over the years that I literally have to turn my head away whenever he emotes. COMEDY’S OUTCASTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE IN THEIR HEADLINING LIVE SHOW.
Antony and Cleopatra. Sid and Nancy. Brad and Ange. History is filled with comical and infamous duos, their names synonymous with a past filled with intrigue and mystery. Tim and Eric is not such a couple, but they have left behind a legacy that makes them the unsung heroes of the comedy world.
“There was always uncomfortableness and awkwardness. Our first entrance into doing this professionally was writing a weekly cartoon. It was a cartoon, so anything could happen, so a lot of awful, dark, fuckedup things happened, because they made us laugh. When you’re doing 30 episodes of something, you start thinking, ‘Well, what if he explodes?’”
How Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim began their comedy quest is like their sketches: bizarre and surreal. Tim’s version of events recounts that they “met in the dorms at Temple University. Eric leaned a big garbage can on my door, knocked and took off. I opened and I got a nice helping of pizza boxes, soda cans, and bong water at my feet. After that we were close friends.”
Even throughout their feature film Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie – the story of two guys (Tim and Eric playing themselves) who receive $1 billion to make a movie and instead waste it on ridiculous ventures – shares the same comedy vein.
Eric recalls the event differently, saying the pair got “yelled at by our communications professor for cracking each other up” at names they had created for their first band, including TGIF, Devil’s Eyeland and The Tim Heidecker Masterpiece. The pair is most famous for Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! an American sketch comedy TV series that has been a permanent fixture from 2007 until 2010, and has seen comedy greats such as Will Ferrell, John C Reilly and Zach Galifianakis feature. The show, which used surrealistic and often satirical humour, bizarre faux commercials and public access television style music acts, began as a small project on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim comedy block and the project grew into five successful seasons. The quirky creators of the show described it as “the nightmare version of television”, with Eric saying it is the dark side to the light-hearted, albeit unusual show that makes it a hit. “I think people are very scared and very disturbed by [the show]”. He noted that the pair draws equal humour from the awkwardness of The Office as they do from the awkwardness of David Lynch’s films. Tim goes on to say that as the series went on, “the darkness grew in us”, from a place that was touched upon with their short-lived animated series Tom Goes to the Mayor, which caught the attention of network executives behind Adult Swim.
“Awkward moments are. . . very much our thing,” Eric says, when describing what makes their comedy unique. “It’s the moments when things go really dark and you shouldn’t be laughing that I like the most. Like the scene in This Is Spinal Tap when Christopher Guest leaves the band and Michael McKean is reacting to it.” Now, the duo is finally bringing their humour to Kiwi audiences in a live version of the Awesome Show. Described as a sketch comedy-rock concert with short films, the show has already delighted fans around the globe, with shows selling out in the UK and US. “We try to make it very theatrical, and fun and musical and, y’know, weird,” says Tim of the show. “It’s sort of like a fan club meeting where we all get to be weird and hang out. “People who go to the shows seem to find themselves to be a little in the minority amongst other people they know, so for them to be able to congregate with each other... it’s a nice place maybe to meet a girlfriend. What kind of girlfriend you’d meet is another matter entirely.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER

Need for Speed is one of the most enduring racing game franchises in the history of the industry. Since the first, way back in 1994, the franchise has spanned dozens of platforms, nine studios, and is about to mark its 19th iteration. In a highly transient industry, that’s no mean feat: gamer tastes change and the market is constantly looking for something fresh – often casting aside everything that came before it in the search for the “new cool”. While the core interaction of car and road has remained intact throughout the series, EA nevertheless haven’t been afraid to reinvent the franchise from time to time. The latest game in the Need for Speed series, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, is a return to open-world gameplay, developed by seasoned racing game makers Criterion. Like Criterion’s previous game, Burnout Paradise, the game’s open world is full of challenges for you to first discover, and then complete. Here, they take the form of cars you’ll find dotted around the map at “jack spots”, each of which has its own unique set of missions to complete. Burnout’s “Easy Drive” feature tracks which of the challenges you’ve completed – and which you haven’t – and also helps you track which cars you’ve found, plus it gives you a start-of-game recap feature to help remind you where you’re up to when starting a new session. Everything works the way you think it should and every car has its own, unique, pre-event introduction camera sequence. It all looks and feels like the polished, big-budget game that it most assuredly is. Interestingly, every version of the game, on every platform, has a universal (powered by Origin) login system, allowing you to continue to amass speed points (the measure used to determine who is Most Wanted) from multiple locations, should you wish to. There’s also a PC version, which will take advantage of modern PC-only technologies like DirectX 11 and high resolutions. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is headed to PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita on November 2. Look out for our full review soon. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? I love black. You can’t fail with black. I love clothes that drape beautifully and classic cuts. My own personal style is classic silhouettes with a modern twist. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Sid and Nancy. What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? I still don’t know which part of the human anatomy we label the “wazoo”, but I would have to say Grace Jones. This gorgeous creature dresses so insanely and wonderfully even now in her sixties. I love her aesthetic and how she has not let herself go. It almost makes up for the fact she is still friends with Naomi Campbell.
BUTTON-DOWN
Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Ugg boots and Crocs, using yolo, fanny packs, wearing black with brown, mullets and too much bling. All these things make me long for the apocalypse.
By American Apparel This unisex shirt is an awesome take on a classic style. It features an eight button closure, single front pocket and a reinforced collar so it won’t lose its shape no matter how many times you wash it! This shirt is great as it can be dressed up or down.
What’s the must-have look this spring? Stripes. Stripes seem to always hold a place in fashion. As per usual, stick with the sailor stripe or branch out with bright bold colours.
RRP$97.00 Americanapparel.com.au
Colours/patterns big this season? Mint green believe it or not will be coming out huge soon! Keep an eye out or get ahead of the trend. Patterns: think whimsical, birds, berries and flowers. What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? That perfect pair of fitting pants for those special events can be dressed up or dressed down depending on what look you are going after. I recommend you trawl ASOS for some good options for this coming spring/summer.

What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? A decent fitting bra. I still have models that turn up for shoots in ill-fitting underwear. Sort it out ladies. Everyone should own at least one good… I was going to say husband, but everyone keeps telling me these aren’t possessions, so instead I am going to say a coat. You find the perfect coat and you can’t go wrong in life. True story. Hyphenate three words to describe your style: Classic-tailored-swag. facebook.com/RocTraversStylist

KIDS OF 88 RETURNS WITH AN ATTEMPT TO BE GROWN UPS – KIND OF. Jordan Arts lets out a short, sharp laugh, his voice vibrating the speakers on my phone. He’s just spent the last few minutes trying to convince me that Kids of 88 have grown up. He uses the concept of a house party to convey the idea, saying their high-energy, “down and dirty in a club” sound was making them “that guy” of the metaphoric party. “Musically, we wanted to be taken seriously a bit more. It’s a reaction to the first album where it had got to the point where you’d end up being a kind of alcoholic. You turn up to have a good time then it gets out of control. We want to be the party animal that knows when to call it.” Their new album, Modern Love, is about Kids of 88 departing from their previous high-energy synthetic dance sound, opting for pop elements that draw on classic pop records in order to achieve a sense of longevity. The kind of guy you will keep inviting back to the hypothetical party. “Now, you can let us loose in your house,” Jordan says, before quickly adding, “but don’t turn your back on us for too long. We wont take all your alcohol – just the nice stuff.” Their first two singles, ‘LaLa’ and ‘Tucan’, adhere to this intention. While throbbing with a catchy hook, both songs shy away from the electronic ‘80s sound, instead opting for an upbeat, lyrically driven piece. His fellow Kid, Sam McCarthy, says this time, making an album wasn’t just about creating sounds “that were hot for a short period of time” or songs that “catered to horny teens”. “We wanted to channel the broader sound and open up our spectrum a bit, encapsulate more people in pop music that we were into.” While they won’t reveal what the songs on the album are about per say, the main themes no longer involve girls tearing their clothes off, but explore the “real world and having a positive outlook”. “The main themes were a sense of realism, a sense of community and a positive way forward, particularly around the planet and strange events,” says Sam, before Jordan yells overtop “Oh my god, 2012!”, proving they can’t be serious for more than five minutes. Kids of 88 (now Kidsof88) began as Incursa, the winning band of the Smokefreerockquest in 2004, founded by long-time high school friends Sam and Jordan. Fast-forward to 2011 and Kids of 88 released their debut album Sugarpills, which blew up across the airwaves. Their singles ‘Just a Little Bit’ earned the band two New Zealand Music Awards for Single of the Year and C4 Best Music Video.

Between albums, the band took the opportunity to get in some overseas time, traveling back and forth to the US and Australia, all the while refusing to rest on the success of their initial explosion. “Ah…I gave those awards to my parents,” says Sam. “I feel funny having the them around. I suppose it means you go, ‘Don’t worry, if all else fails you still have a gold-pated record’, but if you can’t see that then you can move forward.” The boys quickly went into hibernation to get a “solid second record” out in 2012. But with their boyish energy, it was hard to keep them contained. “[Hibernation] results in going absolutely insane,” laughs Sam, “so it also concentrated our mental imbalance being inside too long with each other. When you are trying to focus on making something and with the pressure you do go a bit nuts, but it helped breed a few songs that made it to the album.” The success of the first album did enable the pair to have greater creative control over how their sound was communicated in the form of a studio, Creature Club, in Auckland. This may be a room in Sam’s flat, but it was still a step towards “forging a formula for ourselves to consistently create good music”. However, with the studio located so close to his bed (two metres across the hall) it required a lot of focus and hard work, as well as some motivational dressing tips. “I read this thing by Nick Cave,” explains Sam, “he combated [the lack of focus] by getting dressed up in a suit everyday and going to work – even though his work was working on a song. “We tried to have formal Fridays and we would get dressed up in suits like we were gong to our office, but it turns out I was the only one who got dressed up suit to walk across my hallway so that didn’t work out.” Looking over the physical CDs as they arrive during our interview, the boys reflect on the last year of hard work to make a successful sophomore sound – and while they speak of the emotional depth the overall feel of the album has, they have still retained their sense of fun and passion for good times. “I think some of the songs seem serious,” says Jordan, “but if we told you what they were about you’d think, ‘Oh yeah, still the same old guys having a bloody laugh.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER MODERN LOVE OUT FRI 05 OCT
