PLAYING 2012 VNZMA Finalists FAVourites MATT HEATH RADIO HAURAKI PRESENTER

Favourite drink? Probably milk out of the fridge, straight from the carton. Favourite restaurant/café? Sails Restaurant Westhaven for the crayfish lunch (But I‘ve only been once). Favourite takeaway? Battered sausage from Bonzo Burger in Mt Eden. People say battered sausages are just hotdogs without the stick. That’s bollocks. Battered sausages are sausages that have been battered. Hot dogs are battered frankfurters or saveloys on a stick. I prefer the battered sausage. Favourite classic film? Airplane! Captain: You ever been in a cockpit before? Joey: No I’ve never been up in a plane before. Captain: You ever seen a grown man naked? … Classic! Favourite childhood memory? Watching crappy taped music videos with my little sister. Favourite party food? Cheerios and tomato sauce. I’d eat a whole kilo if I can get away with it. Favourite song? ‘Drink ‘till I Die’ – Bad News. Favourite ‘90s TV show? Seinfeld and The Simpsons. They’re like Bibles for smart people. Every question in life is answered within their episodes. Favourite body part on you? The piece of donor spine I had put in my back last year. Favourite body part on someone else? That same piece of spine, when it was growing on the donor. I hope it brought that person as much happiness while they were around as it brings me now they’re gone.

FRIDAY 12

Thursday 11 XIU XIU

gig OF THE WEEK

THE KINGS ARMS

RIVAL STATE RISING SUN

8PM, $30, UNDERTHERADAR.CO.NZ

The American avant-garde group return to New Zealand for one Auckland show, back with a new album Always. Hailing from California and taking their name from the 1998 Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl, the band are famous for their crazy music videos and even crazier sound. Don’t miss the chance to see them for this one off.

Kiwi revelers Rival State have proved themselves as an unstoppable machine, forming in 2002, disbanding in 2007 for a four-year hiatus, and back this year with their debut album. They have some solid support behind their debut, with British producer Matt Hyde (Slipknot, Trivium, Funeral for a Friend) stepping on board.

PAUL UBANA JONES

BILLY BRAGG

SAIL ROCK CAFÉ

TOWN HALL

MANGAWHAI, 7.30PM

Paul Ubana Jones and percussionist Tony Majdalani join forces in what is expected to be a whirlwind of rhythmic virtuosity, groove and other things. Paul’s a man who has been around since the 1980s, when he released his debut platinum self-titled album. Tony is a good friend and a percussionist from Haifa who’s been living in Switzerland for a good 30 years.

7PM

When he’s not talking, writing or singing about politics he is… well, that never happens. The Bard from Barking’s latest tour celebrates the legacy of Woody Guthrie, with this year marking the 100th anniversary of his birth, as well as highlighting his most popular songs in a career that has spanned three decades.

ZAINE GRIFF

2 A.M. ORCHESTRA

PADDINGTON LIVE

WHAMMY BAR

8PM

10PM

Zaine will play a range of material from his re-released first two albums, Ashes & Diamonds and Figvres, with a selection of startling new pieces from his forthcoming latest album The Visitor. The evening’s performance will span his work with Tony Visconti, Hans Zimmer and Kate Bush.

2 a.m. Orchestra, having recently morphed from an acoustic sextet to a rock ‘n’ roll four-piece, will be hosting a free show with Freaky Meat that’s all about rock, funk and beat-speak. They’re promising to blow your mind and polish your spleen. Not even your doctor can do that.

SATURDAY 13 BEAT FIX

TAHUNA BREAKS

SNAPDRAGON

THE BEDFORD

9PM

As the title suggests, if you have had a hard week of listening to substandard beats and far too much Justin Bieber dubstep, get your fix tonight. Located down by the Viaduct, perfect for daylight savings, be entertained all night long by Dick “Magik” Johnston, Soane, and Normski.

There’s a funky beat up in here, a familiar tune that sounds like summer. Tahuna Breaks forthcoming album may not be hitting the stands until 2013, but to celebrate the release of their second single ‘Smooth’, they figured, why not gig about a bit? They will also be previewing a whole bunch of unreleased tracks.

TOUR

The Datsuns are back to remind us why they were hailed as the future of rock and roll a decade ago. Death Rattle Boogie – their fifth studio album in 10 years – smacks you around the head with hits from start to finish and will be remembered as one of their greatest achievements. Dolf De Borst, (vocals/bass), Christian Livingstone (guitar), Phil Somervell (guitar) and Ben Cole (drums) make it sound easy to create innovative rock and roll, but they are actually a perfect storm of talent. I’d categorise them with Josh Homme and Jack White in their freakish ability to reinvent a distinct style and create instant hits. The first track, ‘Gods Are Bored’, has been released as a free digital download on their website and it certainly sets the tone for the rest of the album.

the album quite nicely, while ‘Wander The Night’ slows things right down to dish out extreme guitar solos. ‘Death Of Me’ finishes things off with true grit and leaves you wanting more. If this was good through headphones, it will be even more dominating live and I’m looking forward to seeing the lads when they tour again. The Datsuns offer a range that make them accessible to international audiences and keep them interesting. Death Rattle Boogie is the perfect showcase of this talent. WRITTEN BY REBECCA EMERY

Fast-paced, full of swagger and bullish, it quickly whets your appetite for more. The solos are supreme and showcases Dolf’s vocal range. The trend continues straight into the next track, ‘Gold Halo’, which is equally hard to ignore. ‘Axethrower’ is my favourite song on the album. It’s so grungy and seductive. ‘Bullseye’ and ‘Shadow’s Loom Large’ are also standouts for the same reason.

ARTIST Q&A

FRIDAY 12

Nicola Benedetti Violinist The best place for a date night is… At home? I’m never home so this is the most exciting idea for me! Where can your fans find you during the weekend? A lot of performances take place on the weekend, and if not I’m usually traveling between them. Otherwise, twitter’s a good option! People say you look like… Michelle Lee from Glee. Kittens or puppies? Kittens because I grew up with cats. What generic current affair has your blood boiled? The current affairs in Syria are almost too painful to watch. My heart and thoughts goes out to those who are suffering.

SOUTHSIDE ARTS FESTIVAL TELSTRACLEAR PACIFIC EVENT CENTRE SEASON: FRI 12 OCT – SUN 11 NOV 9AM, $0-15, DOOR SALES ONLY

I’m going to level with you: the south (of any city) gets a lot of stick. But open up your mind and witness the creative melting pot nestled in Auckland’s far south with the Southside Arts Festival 2012, an annual event that showcases a range of diverse art events, including fashion, dance, music, theatre and more. Now in its fifth year, the festival aims to promote and develop creative excellence and innovation that is unique to Auckland’s south. With so many events to choose from, here are a few of the signature ones to look out for. Southside Gig starts off with a hip-hop workshop leads into a Graf Art battle by international graffiti artist Jurne, before ending with a break dancing showdown like no other. For those where music is your thing, The Mixer Concert is the one to mark out. It’s a solid showcase of Polynesian talent, with rising reggae stars Tomorrow People headlining along with international group Swiss. Pieter T and Three Houses Down also feature. This is a unique opportunity each year to experience culture and arts beyond your own bubble. Get out and learn something new!

THE WEEKEND COMEDY COCKTAIL DOWNSTAGE THEATRE

Your signature “I’m an amazing cook” dish is… I’m not sure I’d say I’m an amazing cook, but anything with pasta is cooked pretty well in my hands! The best TV show around at the moment is… I really don’t watch or follow any TV shows regularly, but speaking of cooking I loved Two Greedy Italians. What’s an upcoming film you’re excited about? I have not been keeping up to date with what’s coming up, but I recently saw The Dark Knight Rises in the IMAX, which was absolutely incredible.

Plug whatever it is that’s coming up for you. I’m performing Tchaikovsky’s amazing Violin Concerto - one of the most challenging works from the violin repertoire. I’m really looking forward to performing this with the NZSO and Peruvian conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya in Forbidden Love. A documentary following two South Africans as they set out to discover what happened to their musical hero, the mysterious 1970s rock ‘n’ roller, Rodriguez: a Mexican-American folk musician cultivated a solid fan base in Australia, South Africa and even here.

SATURDAY 13 RANGO SKY MOVIES, 4.45PM

When he’s not being quirky and confusing in anything Tim Burton has done, Johnny Depp is voicing an odd and confused chameleon in this animated flick. Faced with a major identity crisis, Rango accidently leaves his easy life as a pet and ends up in the wild west town of Dirt, an outlaw post in the desert.

MONDAY 15

Extinguishing any residual memories of Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider’s 1995 foray into Mega-City One within moments, the new Dredd is a down-and-dirty hardcore action fest with style and thrills to burn. As Judge Dredd, Kiwi Karl Urban distills a leading man performance down to its most essential elements and projects them through his permanently – and appropriately – downturned mouth. An actor without the use of his eyes can be a muted thing indeed (see Jemaine Clement in Men In Black III), but Urban gets his point across with gusto. While the presence of Olivia Thirlby’s rookie Judge Anderson provides the film’s central Training Day-like character dynamic, this is more concerned with being a straight-up action movie than delving into Dredd’s head. Lena Headey’s scarred-up villain Ma-Ma is suitably detestable and Wood Harris (The Wire) adds something as a low-level criminal.

An independent production, it’s clear Dredd doesn’t have a Michael Bay-sized budget, but the scope never feels compromised and the future world it establishes feels lived-in. Any accusations of “smallness” are instantly offset by the film’s razor-sharp focus and distinctly non-studio-like brutality. Indeed, a nice sense of Paul Verhoeven-esque over-the-topness permeates the proceedings here, with a little hint of the Dutch madman’s satirical leanings sneaking in too. Dredd benefits greatly from not trying to be all things to all people – it’s tailor-made for fans of old school brutal action who are under-served by today’s blockbuster landscape. And the whole enterprise rests ably on Urban’s broad shoulders. Local boy done good. Local boy done real good. WRITTEN BY DOMINIC CORRY, FLICKS.CO.NZ

Always current, always satirically cruel, South Park’s New Zealand premiere of season 16 is here. CHICKS HOTEL

GROOVE GULPS

2 MOUNT STREET

Adam Neal BAR MANAGER: Racket Bar, 6-10 Rouaki Lane, Britomart

Feel like a salty sea traveler in Port Chalmers’ premiere gig venue, pub and hotel. Hosting some of the best live music from around the country and beyond, the Chicks Hotel has the rustic feel of an 1800s pub, complete with dingy interior and retro couches. The owners are inviting and the atmosphere goes off.

AVIDA BAR 132 FEATHERSON STREET

Wisdom: Even if you have never worked in a bar before, as long as you show that you are willing to learn and have a good work ethic. There will always be someone that will hire you.

This Mediterranean specialist is a bar, a bistro and a world-wide tasting tray of the familiar, the nostalgic and the totally unexpected.Like its patrons it can be piquant and subtle or bold and brilliant. Go on a trip from the North African Coast to Europe and back again. Signature Cocktail:

VIBE Key

About me: I have worked in hospitality for seven years now. Over the years I have worked in every type of venue you can think of, from dark pubs to 5 star boutique hotels. I started in this industry when I was 18 and since then I have never looked back. I have travelled the world using my skills as a bartender to pay the way. It’s been a great seven years and I look forward to the next challenges that come my way.

LISTEN TO ME CAREFULLY TAKEN 2 BRINGS LIAM NEESON’S OLD SET OF SKILLS TO SOME NEW BAD GUYS. In my eyes, Liam Neeson was always a gentle man. A soft-spoken Irish man who knew what true love was in Love Actually, who knew the ways of the force in Star Wars and saved thousands of Jews in Schindler’s List. Then Taken (2008) happened, and it was clear this man took no prisoners as he uttered those immortal words in husky tones that would make Christian Bale blush. Gritty, limb-crunching, and downright ugly, Taken was one man’s fight to save his daughter against the seedy underworld of France’s prostitution ring. It was a box-office hit, earning $224 million, and a critical hit for its relentless pace and the way our usually demure leading man transformed into a bad guy killing machine. So where to go from here? Like Transporter, the Bourne films and Die Hard, some things are best left untouched, to bask in its awesome glory for one time only. But with dollar signs in their eyes, Taken 2 seemed the next logical step. Director Olivier Megaton (Yes, that is his real name) felt the same. After being brought on board for the sequel after working on such projects as Columbiana and Transporter 3, he too thought all was done that could be done in round one of the fight. But he realised therein lies the challenge. “When the story arrived, I realised that it was clever because it wasn’t what everyone might expect,” he explains. “It was a good idea to change things around and make it a kind of tale of revenge. It’s a little more adult today, even if Taken was a really big success all over the world. So first it was Liam [Neeson that drew him to the project], and then it was the challenge of taking the franchise into a new direction.” Round two of the epic battle sees Neeson return as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent who stopped at nothing to save his abducted daughter in Taken. But he left a lot of unhappy bad guys in his wake, with a lot of bodies to be accounted for. When he is targeted by a mysterious figure seeking vengeance, Bryan must employ his “particular set of skills” to protect his family against an army out to kill them. Neeson admits he was excited to come back for another Taken, having filmed more physically demanding roles in The A-Team and The Grey since the first film.

Megaton says she’s “becoming like [Bryan]” “Suddenly Kim becomes something different – a real action character. At the end of the first movie she’s trying to rebuild her life, but she has been impacted by what’s happened to her. These dark memories arrive suddenly and it makes her different, allowing her to become an action hero like her father. That was the real trick of Taken 2.” Under the tutelage of her father, Kim has developed some of his instincts and is much better equipped to cope with the crisis that develops during their family reunion in Istanbul. “She’s her father’s daughter, and she’s finding out what she’s capable of,” says Grace. “In the first film, Kim was young and naive and didn’t know much about the real world. But something incredible happened to her, and she reconstructed herself. She doesn’t want to be passive again.” For both the lead actors and the filmmakers, the decision to return for a sequel was not taken lightly. Taken had captured something special, and everyone was determined to find a fresh angle on Bryan tale. “When I read Luc [Besson] script,” Megaton explains, “I found the openings to do something new. It’s not just another Bryan Mills story; it’s about family and a father determined to save it.” Much of the action unfolds in Istanbul, a locale rarely seen on screen. Megaton spent much of his prep time scouting locations and walking around the city for hours at a time. When principal photography commenced, he knew Istanbul’s streets and passageways better than some of the local crew. Neeson says shooting in Istanbul was like nothing he has experienced. “Istanbul is where east meets west – a beautiful city full of wonderful people,” notes the actor, who has filmed on locations around the globe but remains most impressed with Istanbul’s singular sights and sounds. Everywhere the crewmembers turned, they were faced with a landmark. Key locales included the front of the Süleymaniye Mosque, one of the city’s grandest buildings; the Grand Bazaar, a 15th Century Istanbul landmark that takes up an entire city block and welcomes more than a quarter of a million visitors every day; and a traditional hamam, or Turkish bath, home to the film’s explosive finale.

“It’s great to do that stuff and we have a terrific stunt team,” he enthuses. “I have a wonderful stunt double, Mark Vanselow, who’s my buddy, and he’s been in my life, professionally, for 12 or 13 years. He does all the hard stuff! Returning to the character of Bryan was a chance to get with Mark again and do all the fight training.”

With an old set of skills but a new set of bad guys, Taken 2 sets out to be more than just a number at the end of a successful first film. While initially skeptical, I recommend you go just to see Neeson arse-kick his way through a city, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.

Another aspect of difference that appealed to Megaton was the role of Bryan’s daughter, Kim (played by actress Maggie Grace). In the first film, she is bloodied, beaten and taken hostage. Emerging stronger than ever,

Clearing the HAZE So much for the sparkle, fade and invisible stars. “I’ve been clean for 23 years, but you know if Joe Biden was to call up and suggest we go on a bender to Las Vegas I’d do it, man. We’d do like the The Hangover, drink like fish and take in a couple of ‘shows’ (and I don’t mean Cirque de Soleil). It would be worth it. It would cause a few divorces, but you know…” Talking to front man Art Alexakis about “his band, Everclear” two things became pretty obvious: he’s a responsible adult, with two lovely daughters and a beautiful wife; and he’s in a rock band and he likes to party like he’s nigh-nini-nineteen! It was the responsible adult that picked up the phone in his Pasadenca, CA, home to talk to me. “I’m glad you called now, cos I’m gonna head out soon, pick up my wife and daughter and head over to a friends to watch the electoral debate between Romney and Obama’. So who are you rooting for? “Well, I’ve always been a Democrat. And Romney is just stupid. I think he’s actually more stupid that (his predecessor) George Bush. Those comments about the 40% (of Americans who are freeloaders) are just stupid, crazy and dumb! Everyone in my part of the world likes Obama. But you know I wouldn’t party with him. (Vice President) Joe Biden, on the other hand…” And that led to the story about partying in Vegas. He also reminded me “Hey, I’m fifty and I’m in a rock band still – what’s cooler than travelling the world, playing and partying!” Indeed the band, so named for a particularly potent brand of grain liquor and originally formed in Portland, Oregon, has been ‘partying’ pretty much since its inception in 1992. Alexakis (guitars, vocals) originally formed the band with bassist Craig Montoya and Drummer Greg Eklund. Through various ‘incarnations’ (he hates the word but concedes it the best description) the band made a number of late grunge masterpieces including their classic debut on Capitol records Sparkle and Fade. That album dropped everyone’s mix tape favourite ‘Heroin Girl’ and Alt radio choice cut ‘Santa Monica’. Subsequent albums failed to maintain the pole position of their debut, which was racing, at the

time, in the company of Nirvana’s Nevermind and various hits from Sonic Youth, Bush and Counting Crows. However, with a steady fan base Alexakis’ rocky grunge pop has built up a big following over the years. With constant touring and seven albums in the can and a new one Invisible Stars freshly minted. There’s a sense of déjà vu as the band has re-recruited lead guitarist Dave French and keys man Josh Crawley. The new album has the same bump and grind of the earlier works, but with a bit of a conscience, says Alexakis. ‘Jackie Robinson’ is about America’s first Black sports icon – “a post WWII baseball player who played them (white bigots) at their own game and won them over. Just like Obama. I’m a big baseball fan, and I can see the comparisons, too.” He also reveals that he’s a big fan of the American dream and way of life – when everything is in balance. Which might be the moral behind the single: ‘Be careful what you wish for.’ There’s also a sense of déjà vu here, too. The video for ‘Heroin Girl’ was recorded with an overbearing crowd of kids in a Portland skate park. ‘Be Careful…’ is recorded in a lavish car park style studio in LA with a similar crowd, only at the end of a song, they all blow up! “That was the director’s idea – he wanted the crowd to be like an explosive dream, a fantasy with a violent end”. Like disloyal fans, fickle consumers maybe? “Maybe. Being big shoppers. He blew my wife up twice and my oldest daughter, too.” You can’t always choose your family but if you’re a rock star you can explode them occasionally, I guess.

Assassin’s Creed III releases at the end of the month, but it’s not one new game; it’s two. A companion game, called Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, is releasing for the PlayStation Vita alongside Assassin’s Creed III on consoles. We played both games recently, and had the chance to talk with Philippe Bergeron, the mission director on the title, about what we should expect and why the game is set during the American revolution. Surprisingly the title – which is a third-person action-heavy adventure – also features naval combat. You literally control a “tall ship” and go toe-to-toe with other vessels, jockeying for superior position on the waves and using your various cannon types to blow your enemies out of the water. “Ubisoft gave a lot of liberties to the development team,” Philippe explained. “They always want to out-do themselves. If you do one thing on one AC game, the next time you’re going to try to out-do yourself, do something bigger and better.” The game engine for Assassin’s Creed III was rebuilt after Assassin’s Creed II. The iteration of the team’s technology that we’ll see at the end of the month has been some three years in the making, with core systems – including combat and the way in which your character gets around the world – rebuilt almost from scratch to better support the radical new era in which the game is set. The revolution was an important part of American history and featured some very prominent figures. As is the Assassin’s Creed tradition, many of these have made the transition into the game. “This time around you’ll get to meet George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson. There are more historical characters than in previous games, just because everything is so well documented, we had so many characters to choose from.” A character that’s featured in every Assassin’s Creed game is Desmond: the modern-day player character whose lineage provides the window back to his ancestor’s memories. “Assassin’s Creed III doesn’t necessarily conclude Desmond’s story, but it does close a chapter. We wanted to spend more time with Desmond than we had in the past.” WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

CAT CAMEO BROOCH

What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Gwen Stefani, Nicole Kidman, Rihanna, Audrey Hepburn, Bic Runga, Charlize Theron, Kate Blanchett and Johnny Depp. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? To be honest I think there is a place for every fashion aesthetic in today’s society; there are so many different cultures, mindsets and walks of life that there is always a market for the designer. Success comes from how well you tap into that market; the only faux pas in my mind would be to limit yourself through ignorance or ego. What’s the must-have look this season? A fresh current beauty regime and look check out Phoenix cosmetics and Dharma for hair. Colours/patterns big this season? I don’t tend to follow season trends; I stay true to my own aesthetic and love of clothes. I am drawn to green, rustic tones, fabrics are very important to me and as far as cuts are concerned, a wellconstructed and innovatively drafted dress or a well draped top and trouser go a long way…. a garment that is made well from beautiful fabric and exudes style, individuality and elegance. What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? His lovely wife of course! Ha! I find woolen sweatshirts, tops, jumpers so sexy on my husband What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? A well fitted bra and knickers.

These New Zealand custom-made cat cameo brooches are probably the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. Choosing between the pink or navy bow will be such a hard decision – it might just be easier to buy both!

AIN’T NOBODY CAN TALK LIKE HIM OUTSPOKEN, UPFRONT AND ALWAYS KEEN TO TALK ABOUT POLITICS: IT’S BILLY BRAGG.

SEE HIM LIVE: BILLY BRAGG FRI 12 OCT TOWN HALL, AUCKLAND SAT 13 OCT THE OPERA HOUSE, WELLINGTON

“Well, I’ve given up on politics now that the British Nationalist Party has been defeated,” claims UK’s greatest socialist national treasure Billy Bragg, referring to the demise of his local BNP candidate in his home town of Barking. “I think I’ll concentrate on writing love songs and songs with a message about connecting people.”

[At the Olympic Games] in London we saw real British heroes on the running track, three examples of how the UK has benefited from multiculturalism, free education, health care. Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah became the embodiment of a new diverse Britain of the 21st century. One we can feel we should be proud of again.”

And connecting is what Bragg is good at. For instance, his guitars in prisons (Jail Guitar Doors ) charitable trust has helped thousands of inmates, and his involvement with electoral reform is also working to bring the message of self-empowerment back to the people.

Recently Bragg’s been exploring other cultures too, including the Dust Bowl politics of one of the US’s greatest sons – Woody Guthrie, who passed away in 1967. In the mid 1990’s, his daughter Nora found a large box of unpublished lyrics. She decided to call up Bragg to write the music for these disembodied words.

Of course, no conversation with Bragg would go far without talking politics. Tonight over the phone, he tells me he’s packing for a “Woody 100” concert in New York. These are a series of concerts and events organized by Woody Guthrie’s daughter Nora, which are occurring all over the world for the centennial anniversary of his birthday. “I said I’d do it – Steve Earle, Andy Irvine and Arlo Guthrie are also playing.” The Big Apple is light years from where the Bard of Barking first fronted up with just a guitar and a “loud as f***K” amp and a whole lot of attitude – delivering songs such as ‘Between the Wars’, inspired by the 1984-85 miner’s strike. At that time Britain was buried deep in the proverbial excrement of Thatcherism. This was the backdrop to Bragg’s one man crusade to save England from itself. Material such as ‘A New England’ was a search some kind of positive identity and became the template for a career in defence of the underdog. “Britain was a dismal self-parody of hate, destruction,” Bragg says. “It was all about the war, the empire, the royals, the Union Jack, but no-one was looking to the future. We were dwelling in the past [almost as if] we were afraid to let go.”

|

“I guess she contacted me because I didn’t have much idea of him. I’d never sung ‘This land is your land’. She wanted someone who could look at the music with a fresh head.” The huge collection was written between about 1939 and 1955. Guthrie had once offered Bob Dylan the songs from his hospital bed, during the mid1960s, but he was turned down. The first challenge was understanding the rhyme and metre of each piece. Guthrie kept the tunes in his head, never writing music. Starting in 1996, 29 years after Guthrie’s death, Bragg, fairly early into composing new material, realised he needed help. “I did a few secret shows – web invites – and it became clear that the new Guthrie songs all sounded like they were Billy Bragg songs. I knew Jeff Tweedy from his days with uncle Tupelo and I showed him the stuff and the band was really enthusiastic. Working with them was an eye opener. I’m used to working (composing) with such an efficient band.”

And that included those involved in the feud between the left and the Tories. Bragg recently wrote that, “The long tradition of internationalism has resulted in the left having a blind spot when confronted with expressions of national identity.”

The resulting Mermaid Avenue, named after Guthrie’s Coney Island home, first appeared in 1997. Tweedy and Jay Bennett (also from Wilco) began looking through the songs searching for those that spoke to them, needed to be heard. Success with the first album opened up the world to Guthrie’s music again. Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, released in 2000, followed and then and a Vol. III, collecting 18 tracks not heard before.

“It was sad you know, we were beating ourselves up about being ourselves,” he says. “You know, Tim, socialism, and I know you think I’m one, I am, comes in many varieties, close up individual identity is a manylayered thing. We define ourselves by those things that make us proud to be part of in an imagined community.

And finally the whole collection has been released as a three CD box set with accompanying DVD and Bragg tells me he’s out on the road to promote it. Suddenly Bragg hesitates to check the time. “Sorry, mate,” he tells me, “I’m off to the bank. The plane to New York’s in a couple of hours. Anyway we’ll see you soon down under!”

“So many kids are looking at reality TV and saying ‘I want to be famous for being famous’, like the Kardashians, not for some long invested talent.
