The PRODIGY Son
In the very early 90’s the UK record label XL Recordings released two albums from a set of Harlequin dressed ravers named The Prodigy. It’s nearly fifteen years since the release of their third and most successful album to date Fat Of The Land. To mark the occasion it’s being re-released and enhanced with an “added fat” CD of new mixes. These new retakes include Noisia on ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, Zeds Dead on ‘Breathe’ and Alvin Risk on ‘Firestarter’ amongst others. Expect a digital release early December and for the wax junkies it will be available as a special 4-track vinyl.
NZ On Air have announced The Almighty Johnsons, 7 Days and a variety of new and returning TV programming will receive funding for new seasons next year. In the latest funding round a third season of The Almighty Johnsons has been granted a whopping $6.9 million after a near axe after season two. 7 Days got the green light to return with a grant of $760,000, along with First Crossings, Polyfest 2013, and Anzac Day commemorative programmes that will receive smaller grants.

Shit Worth Knowing
PLAYING EARTH’S FESTIVAL FAVourites New Year’s Eve. It’s a time of getting drunk, hanging out in tents, bonding with your mates, and using the camping lifestyle as an excuse not to shower.
VANCE FONTAINE COMEDIAN
If Mother Earth, creativity, dance, music and culture is your thing check out this cool kid on the block: Luminate. Luminate is an earth-friendly festival of music, dance, art and culture with a focus on environmental sustainability, intentional community, knowledge sharing, creativity and inspiration. Returning for its sixth year in 2013, the festival runs for eight days, with five zones of music packed full of international and Kiwi artists, not to mention zones of workshops to inspire and empower you. This is one for the kids too, not just rowdy “kids” and features family-friendly activities such as the juggle-poi-toy circus zone, lively market, organic food, healing hub, enlightening movies, and plenty of activities for the younger ones.
Favourite takeaway? Your wife. Favourite colour? Spangle. Favourite classic film? The Richard Simmons Air New Zealand safety video – classic. Favourite childhood memory? Waking up one morning to an amazing musical sound. It was my own voice ... yawning. It was at that moment The Vance knew he was destined for greatness. Favourite party food? The Vance doesn’t eat at a party – food and white suits don’t play harmoniously together. Favourite song? Anything off The Vance’s latest greatest hits album Falling In Love Again, Again. Favourite meal? A big plate of amphetamines.... with a cocktail olive. Favourite word? Vance. Favourite type of groupie? One with a pulse, but without a beard.
In terms of music, Luminate offers a broad diversity of acts. The E-Zone (not to be confused with the drug) is all about electronic music. The artist are selected and collated by Christchurch and Tasman districts own DJs Josh Tasman and Subminimal, who aim to bring a wide range of those making waves in the dance scene. If relaxing is more your thing, head to the Chillout Zone, a place to lounge around with a cup of chai tea and listen to the soothing sounds in a communal area filled with warm hospitality as well as blankets. But if indigenous cultures are more your thing, learn a new skill such as the pounding rhythm of African drums, or the Aboriginal didgeridoo. This zone creates a wonderland of music and dance harking back to our ancestors around the heat of a bonfire. When you’re ears are not getting their fill of new experiences, give the rest of your senses something to so with the Luminate workshops. These include permaculture, alternative energy, yoga, holistic health techniques, circus skills, quantum science, electronic music production, improvisation, harakeke, and lots more. At night, you can find a range of enlightening movies and docos.
One of the unique things about Luminate is that it is all about sustainability and keeping everything earth-friendly. To combat this they have composting toilets, buildings that use natural and recycled materials, eco-solutions for hot water and showers, earth oven cooking, solar power, and lots more. Surround yourself in the beauty of Canaan Downs for eight days of relaxation and new experiences. Make the most of the wide range of entertainment and workshops on offer and most importantly have fun! SUNDAY 21 JAY SEAN TELSTRACLEAR PACIFICA CENTRE
8PM, $59-200, TICKETDIRECT.CO.NZ
As the guy that brought you the catchy hits of ‘Down Down’, ‘I’m All Yours’ and ‘Hit the Lights’, you’ll know his work as the songs that you scream “I love this song” while dancing in some shady club with sticky floors and distinct smell of toilet. That said, he’s kind of a babe and not too bad at the whole dancing thing.
HENRY WAGONS AND CO. GOLDEN DAWN
5PM
Prepare for a showcase of soul-stirring, heart-melting songwriting. It’s a Sunday afternoon of country swing and ballads from the heart. Wagons are a modern-day classic, harking back to an era of Wild West novels and searching for civilization. They are joined by Marlon Williams & Delaney Davidson and Emma Russack.
This is so good it hurts… but only because it comes from a very talented bunch of Australians. Lonerism ditches some of the more organic rock elements of Tame Impala’s first full-length album, Innerspeaker, and embraces their electro-psychedelic leanings with a more powerful intent. The melodies are stronger, and that dreamy, Beatles-esque sound that they’ve cultivated has blossomed, potentially influencing younger bands still finding their way. Movement-creation caught in the act? Quite possibly so. Innerspeaker was always going to be a tough act to follow for this Perth four-piece. Cue big kudos from the likes of Pitchfork, NME, Rolling Stone, etc, and subsequently finding a frenzied fan-base who thirsted for more. You’ve got to hand it to them though: this second full-length LP is nothing, if not, nerve-less, especially in the face of such dribbling anticipation. And they’ve progressed nicely from that first album, almost like they’ve taken what they wanted and quickly moved on to the next conquest. Lonerism’s guitar has pulled back slightly (but when it comes in it sure makes its presence felt), while the drums and synth have become somewhat more prominent. Instruments aside however, it’s frontman Kevin Parker, who leads Tame Impala down the path they currently walk, and he deserves a large chunk of credit for that road being paved in gold.
His writing and vocals weave through the greater narrative, like a supercoordinated drunk: seemingly freeand-easy, but sure-of-foot and focused with a glorious intent. With his song structures he’s created a newly synthetic version of those beautiful soundscapes that many pioneered back in the 1960s. It feels somewhat chaotic at times, but it sure-as-sugar is not. It’s driven, finely manipulated and effectively (almost perfectly) executed. Just look at Parker’s work on the track, ‘Why Won’t They Talk To Me?’ It’s smooth and supple, following a train-of-thought in accordance with the albums theme of, well… Loner-ism (It’s as good a name as any). The song seems almost simplistically-cerebral yet borderline-sickeningly sweet – resulting in a moreish product that you can consume, over and over again. Which is pretty much the case for every song on the album. ‘Elephant,’ ‘Keep On Lying,’ ‘Be Above It’ (One of the more effective opening tracks you’ll hear) and the rest. Each demands repeat plays from the listener. Talk about getting a feelgood hit, just in time for summer. WRITTEN BY DARREN MASLIN

The best TV show around at the moment is… I struggle to enjoy much TV these days, much prefer a good DVD... however I am a sucker for Grey’s Anatomy and my partner loves the ITM Fishing Show which I happen to secretly enjoy. The best place for a date night is… I adore Coco’s Cantina, fabulous food, funky setting and whether it’s summer or winter there are always weird and wacky things passing by on K’rd to keep you entertained. People say you look like… Sandra Bullock but I am not sure that’s a compliment or not? What generic current affair has your blood boiled? Guys that are against abortion! There are too many abuse cases in this world for abortion to be illegal; I am very passionate about woman having the right to make their own choices about their body. THE RIDGES - Season Finale TV3, 7:30pm
Oh no, is it that time already? Time for the Ridges to leave our screens? Oh, but it’s been such an average ride through the middle-class life of two Kiwi “socialites”. In all fairness, the show is wrapping up with a bang as Jaime’s hard work and training pays off, taking on The GC’s Rosana.
THURSDAY 18 DOWNTON ABBEY - Season 3 PRIME, 8.30pm
The wait for one of the hottest, and most surprisingly successful, British class dramas is back on Prime for a new season. With the arrival of steel- tongued Cora’s mother (played by the insatiable Shirley McLaine), expect a war of the words with the other lady of the manor, Violet Crawley (Dame Maggie Smith).
Starring RODRIGUEZ, CLARENCE AVANT AND MALIK BENDJELLOUL
Malik Bendjelloul’s doco about a long lost folk singer-songwriter who could have been the next Bob Dylan brings together many of my favourite things – detective fiction, forgotten artists, working class stories, dual existences, music nerdiness – into a soulful, liptremblingly joyous movie that’s one of the more affecting experiences I’ve had in a cinema this year. Detroit musician Sixto Rodriguez recorded two politically charged albums in the early 1970s – Cold Fact and Coming to Reality, but they flopped in the US and he went off the radar. Searching for Sugar Man traces Rodriguez’s missing years and the story unearthed is amazing: Cold Fact found its way into South Africa and went on to sell thousands, attaining Rodriguez the cult status of being bigger than Elvis in that country. But he remained a mystery to his fans with many believing he committed suicide on stage by setting himself alight.
Featuring interviews with Rodriguez’s colleagues, family, and former producers who’re still bewildered at why he never took off, the doco finds its shape via the passionate sleuthing of two South African fans, revealing narrative layers that go beyond simple mythbusting. Bendjelloul’s juxtaposition of Rodriguez’s parallel lives – the inspirational, anti-establishment rock legend in a country torn by oppression, and the humble, bluecollar worker who had no idea he was one – proves to be powerful, uncanny, uplifting. Searching for Sugar Man satisfies both as a tribute to the transformative qualities of music and the selflessness of a rare individual. BY AARON YAP, FLICKS.CO.NZ

Shit worth dRINKING
SALE ST 7 SALE ST
Located in the heart of Victoria Park Market in Freemans Bay, Sale St is a venue that encompasses everything from an award-winning microbrewery to Auckland’s largest deck and garden bar. What’s more, Sale St is a hot destination for live music: DJ sets to acoustic wind-downs on Sundays.
BAR MEDUSA 1 54 VIVIAN STREET
If you look into the eyes of the beast, we promise you won’t turn into stone. You will, however, find yourself face-to-face with a whole lot of local and alternative music. It’s a creative hub, an open door to sounds you won’t find on the radio these days.
COMMONS
Located in the swanky new McKenzies Precinct of Takapuna, the Commons is about providing a common, but very uncommon, location for after work drinks, lunch, dinner and more. With five unique yet interconnected spaces sharing or overlooking the shared outdoor area, you can have anything from a bistro-style meal to a full degustation menu. Not to mention their extensive list of wines: 50 to choose from to be precise.

LIFE NOT GUARANTEED GROOVE GUIDE WRITER LAURA WEASER PREVIEWS THE UPCOMING FLICK EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT.
IN CINEMAS THU 18 OCT: SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED DIRECTED BY COLIN TREVORROW STARRING AUBREY PLAZA, JAKE JOHNSON AND KARAN SONI
Making an indie film requires the right balance of certain elements. You need the right amount of quirky without completely alienating your audience. You need the kind of girl that breaks Hollywood conventions: not clichéd good looking, witty but a kind of a loner, and often has troubling forming relationships. You need a strange leading man and a whole bunch of cameos from unusual characters with problems of their own. And then you add in an element of science fiction– time travel – and you have Safety Not Guaranteed. Three employees from a Seattle magazine are on the hunt for the latest story. Following up this crazy newspaper ad that calls for someone to go back in time, the three travel to Ocean View, Washington, looking for the meaning behind this strange request. What will they find? A deranged lunatic? To their surprise Kenneth (Mark Duplass) is a seemingly normal individual, who completely and utterly believes he has created a way to travel back to 2001. In a journey to find out more about Kenneth, the reporters also learn more about themselves. Safety Not Guaranteed is, believe it or not, based on a true story when a man placed an ad in a survivalist magazine looking for people to join him on a time travelling adventure. Their safety was not guaranteed. It seems an odd start to a film, but writer Derek Connolly saw something in this concept. “My first thought was what if the guy who placed the ad was sincere and really wants to go back in time, yet everyone was making fun of him. There was something really sad about it all. What if he was really lamenting something from his past that he wants to go back and fix.” Wouldn’t we all want to do that? Our characters certainly do. Darius (Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza) is a jaded magazine intern with a family history she’d love to change. Reporter Jeff (New Girl’s Jake Johnson) is lamenting over his old love interest and wants to turn back time to the days of sweet 18 years old, and our main man, Kenneth, wants to go back for love.
While Safety follows a pretty A-typical formula of indie films, there’s something remarkably humorous and appealing about this film. A lot of this hinges on the relationship between Darius and Kenneth. Mark Duplass said of his character, that he loves films where the protagonist is someone who “the world seems to be against but they have the purity and passion of heart in the way they go about doing things. Kenneth has that, but has it in a way that is heartwarming and ridiculous”. Kenneth is just that: despite all his oddities and his obsession with time travel, he’s just a regular guy wanting some TLC and someone to look past his quirks after being hurt so many times in the past. Duplass plays him with such a serious conviction in his cause we can’t help but laugh at him, feel sorry for him and root for him all at the same time. In true Aubrey Plaza style, she’s all wit and a natural sense of charm she often seems oblivious to. She’s always one step removed to Kenneth’s plans every step of the way, unsure if they guy is for real or he’s going to do a complete 180 degree turn on us and turn out to be a complete mental. We follow her lead and like Darius, we are never quite sure what his intention is, but he seems so completely genuine we let him into our hearts. It’s a risk, and like the title suggests, safety is not guaranteed. Beneath the sci-fi bent on the story, Safety is a love story – just not in the typical sense. It’s about time travel in the way we all wish we could go back but we need to put things behind us in order to move forward. There some things that aren’t explained in the film, adding to the mystery surrounding Kenneth’s character, and the unusual circumstances definitely mix things up a bit, but it’s each individuals own desire to “time travel” that is the crux of this film. Do they succeed? You’ll have to find out, but beware: your safety is not guaranteed. WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER LAURASSCREENING.COM

The iconic fighting game series Mortal Kombat, which Warner Bros rebooted late last year, was a big success for all involved – including the players, who lauded the title for updating the franchise without losing its soul in the process. Keen to continue their success, developers NetherRealm are turning their attention to a brand new fighting game property – this time based not on ripping people’s heads off, but on the classic DC comic book characters (Superman, Batman, etc) we all know and love. Keen to find out more about the game, I sat down with NetherRealm’s creative director (and the co-creator of Mortal Kombat itself) Ed Boon. “We wanted to try to do something that would not only be outside the category of Mortal Kombat”, Ed said by way of introduction, “but also do something dramatically different with the fighting game genre.”
GAME ON 18th Century, North America. After more than 20 years of conflict, the 13 American colonies and the British Crown are on the brink of all-out war. Battle lines are drawn. Bloodshed is inevitable. Fight for freedom and justice will be forged in the flames of revolution. Pre order now, out 31/10/2012. RRP $98.00

And different it is. It continues to advance the storytelling technology that’s unique to NetherRealm’s games, as well as introducing extremely interactive fighting environments for the first time in the genre. “Our goal was to make the arena as instrumental as the characters you choose”, Ed explained. “There’s some really crazy [arenas] that, when someone picks a different character, you change your mind and pick someone else, because you know you’re playing in this particular arena – that’s the kind of strategy we’re seeing.” The moves, too, are massive and over the top – which is a big part of feeling like you’re playing as a superhero character. Superman, for example, can punch his opponent into space, at which point he smashes them back down to earth again in an incredibly powerful (and crowd-pleasing) attack. “We really want to celebrate the superhero experience. If you pick a character – Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman – if you’re familiar with that character, you really feel like you’re playing as them.” Based on my experiences with Injustice, they’re right on track to achieving exactly that. The Flash feels fast, Batman heavily relies on his brain and his gadgets, and Superman feels powerfully aloof. Having spent some serious time with the title, April – the game’s release date – suddenly feels that much further away. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

What are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? A belt. It is the small things that make a big difference. What are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? Heavily-laddered stockings. They look so beautiful. I had one lady ask me at Kew Gardens if I was embarrassed wearing them and my response was, ‘Why would I be? There is beauty in the unfinished and damaged.’ She walked away looking rather perplexed.

AIN' T NOTHIN' BUT ROCK WITH THE BLACK KEYS GEARING UP TO FLY TO OUR WAY, WE HIT THEM UP FOR A DEEP AND MEANINGFUL ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL STARS.
Half of The Black Keys duo singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach was on the other end of the line, “in Hollywood being a star.” A sense of sarcasm rang about his words, almost a sentiment of resentment for their fame. Hailing from Akron, Ohio – a metropolitan area that outweighs the combined populations of Wellington and Christchurch – their fame is mere chump change in a continent splattered with millionaire cities, so it’s not hard to understand their reluctance to become jaded pin-ups, for their story is one of hard work, grit and perseverance that characterises their truly unique take on rock. The Black Keys have become renowned for their stripped back and honest rock, particularly since their “breakout” album Brothers (2010). What has easily been forgotten, under the media’s leap on top of them, is that there were five studio albums that preceded it. The Black Keys is a story over a decade in the making and the truth is they really couldn’t give a shit about being famous because they were making music anyway. Akron is an integral player in their biopic. When asked if he thought Akron – or for that matter any hometown – could define a person Auerbach conceded that for him it left a huge mark. “Akron is a blue collar town,” he explains. “It’s who we are. We’ve always felt like the underdog. So we travel and work extra hard.” Before Brothers, “we were selling out 15,000 tickets in New York City”. “We’re different people, we have more experiences. But we haven’t forced anything.” He also reiterated that for them music is personal; “We’re not rock stars.” The Black Keys have been packing stadiums across the world – even in New Zealand, Wellington’s TSB Arena awaits them with a sold out crowd. Auerbach said he had a preference for a bigger venue over the smaller, intimate venues such as a pub. He put it down to the energy of a stadium being better to vibe off. In a display of their no bullshit attitude, Auerbach – in an off-the-cuff follow up answer as to whether or not
they’d play somewhere more obscure, such as a library for example – said, “I wouldn’t want to disrupt people studying.” GC. It’s always best straight from the horse’s mouth, so Auerbach got lynched with an unfavourite question for musicians – his take on music and how he sees his own. The Black Keys make rock ‘n’ roll, nothing more nothing less. They’ve been compared to the likes of fellow American drum/axe duo The White Stripes, but what sets them apart is their conviction to keep it honest and keep it real. Their touring playlist is ever changing and Auerbach didn’t have a staple artist to rattle off – he said that they stick to old soul music and bluegrass. His take on modern music and the rise of the likes of drum ‘n’ bass and dance was equally straight up: “I either like music or I hate music.” This isn’t their first venture down under and Auerbach is looking forward to it. He finds touring New Zealand and Australia less hectic than the continents because there is more downtime. In an exclusive drop, El Camino is being re-released as a New Zealand and Australian tour edition, featuring nine live tracks from across their career. Auerbach has said “I think where this record is going to shine for me is playing the songs live. This record is more straight ahead rock ‘n’ roll – raw, driving, and back to basics.” And for those of you have come to love the ‘Lonely Boy’ music video guy, who even learnt the dance off by heart, he won’t be coming to get jiggy wit’ it.
