NBC have chosen Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the hosts of the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards. “Having both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on board to host this year’s festivities is a major coup,” Paul Telegdy, NBC’s President, Alternative and Late Night Programming, said. “Tina and Amy have a proven chemistry and comedic timing from their many years together on SNL to their successful costarring roles in Baby Mama.” The 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation stars were hilarious during last month’s Emmy Awards, which we presume inspired the idea the duo would probably do a good job hosting the entire thing. The ceremony will be held on Sun 13 Jan 2013.

BASIN OF BEATS

A new summer festival has just been revealed. Shotover Sunshine Festival will be held over Waitangi weekend at the The Wakatipu Basin. The festival will take place on Sat Feb 9 from midday to 1am at Littles Road, Queenstown. Nestled in the beautiful grasslands beside the Shotover River, only 10 minutes from central Queenstown. The lineup includes Kora, The Black Seeds, Tiki Taane, Ladi6, The Upbeats, Sola Rosa, Ahoribuzz, Sunshine Sound System, Funkommunity, Rhythmonyx, a special live Kapa Haka performance and more.

BACK TO THE BOOKS

R&B /Hip Hop sensation Drake has finally earned his high school diploma at age 25 after dropping out when he took a starring role on the hit Canadian series Degrassi: The Next Generation. Drake tweeted mid October. “One of the greatest feelings in my entire life. As of tonight I have graduated high school!” Drake isn’t the only music star to score a diploma recently either. Back in July, Justin Bieber earned his high school diploma from the St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in Stratford, Ontario. Stay in school kids... even multi platinum selling artists need a back up career.

Favourite drink? English Breakfast tea, water, or Appleton Estate rum with ginger beer. Favourite takeaway? I’m not actually that much of a takeaway fan. Although I do love stopping in at Whoopie in Grey Lynn for their amazing cake/biscuits as a special treat! Favourite colour? Indigo blue, turquoise, mint, purple and black. Favourite classic film? Blade Runner, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Star Wars. Favourite childhood memory? Jumping off cliffs and out of trees into deep blue water in the heat of summer – something I am still partial too – and my Dad pouring still warm, creamy milk straight out of the vat onto my Weet-Bix in the morning in winter. Favourite party food? Chocolate-dipped strawberries. Favourite song? ‘It’s all alright I feel It!’ – Nuyorican Soul (Roni Size Remix) on the classic tip and currently ‘Super Rich Kids’ by Frank Ocean. Favourite cause? Anything to do with the welfare of animals, I also support “All Out”, a cause for Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender rights.

Watercolours has been named as the 2012 winner of the Critics’ Choice Prize, part of the 2012 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. Finalists Loui the ZU, Watercolours and Beach Pigs each performed a live set at the King’s Arms in Auckland last Wednesday night in front of a packed crowd and a panel of 13 music critics. The critics were tasked with selecting just one recipient; someone they believe has the potential to win a Tui in the future. Following an impressive set, Watercolours - the stage name of Auckland’s Chelsea Jade Metcalf - took home the prize. Watercolours says: “I am completely blindsided by this win as all of the performers brought their ‘A’ game tonight. It is encouraging to see the support there is for my music.” The Critics’ Choice Prize, now in its third year, is designed to recognise and promote up-andcoming Kiwi music talent and potential future music awards winners. In 2011 the line-up included

Kimbra, while in 2010 it included Home Brew – both are now finalists for this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards on Thu 01 Nov. The 2010 line-up included The Naked and Famous who have gone on to achieve great local and international success. “The panel has shown remarkable skill in picking future Tui winners in the past and I have no doubt they’ve got it right again this year – all three finalists looked and sounded fantastic and have great potential for the future,” says RIANZ managing director Chris Caddick. In addition to recognition from top music industry experts, Watercolours gets money and professional guidance and advice to help her ‘make it’ in the New Zealand music market. She receives a $10,000 recording and music video grant from NZ On Air, $2,000 gear voucher and heaps more.

gig OF THE WEEK

JUICE BAR

8PM, $68, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

8PM, 25, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ

Since their emergence on the English scene in the 1990s, record labels were practically fighting over themselves to represent these guys. Then they won a Mercury Prize for their debut album. Now, 15 years on, the band is still going strong and are making a welcome return to the New Zealand crowd.

Evermore exploded onto our music scene in 2004, making us aware that Feilding was a place full of musical talent. Then, like all good performers, they quickly hoped the ditch. Lucky for us, their music making and fourth studio album are both going well so their back in the homeland for an intimate gig.

This is a very special show, the band will be incorporating their talented and supportive family into the show, including vocalist Mara TK’s blue guitarist father Billy TK and keyboardist Taay Ninh’s mother, traditional Vietnamese vocalist Le Nuong.

Despite what it may appear, it’s not some dude selling fake records out of the back of his Holden in some dodgy alleyway. The homage band is in their 33rd year and have played almost 5000 shows across the globe. And after 50 years of The Beatles’ first record session at Abbey Road, the sound of the iconic hits will be echoing through the St James.

STUDIO

8PM, $69, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

The perfectly pixie-like Brit, with her wailing vocals and synth-step dance beat, is making her first appearance in New Zealand to celebrate her sophomore album Halcyon. While some dubstep fans might be wondering if she is due to bring her bf Skrillex along and looking forward to her intimate shows.

Emotional power, immediacy, honesty… no, it’s not a deep and meaningful with your girlfriend as she’s breaking up with you. Instead, it’s the three words most commonly used to describe American alt-rock act Sinclarity. After rocking out as support act to Everclear, they’re heading off from the beaten track alone.

8PM, $5, DOOR SALES ONLY

Empirical is described as “such an occasional performer it is fair to wonder if this band really exists”, meaning you should thank your lucky stars this opportunity has come up. AAA 3 DECK SHOW NORTHERN STEAMSHIP

9PM

Ok, so Alias and Adam O aren’t exactly three A’s, but I think what they are going for here is that they will be so powerful it will have the power of a triple A battery. Maybe, I’m not sure. Whatever the clever wordplay here, the reality is they don’t need words to blow your mind so sit back, chill out and let their beats do all the work.

SUNDAY 28 WAITAKERE FESTIVAL 2012 HENDERSON PARK

11.30AM, FREE

It’s true; the festival is more than just music. With amazing food, clothing, innovative products and crafty such things. It even has a pop-up art gallery. Line up includes: Robert Scott of The Bats/The Clean, Coco Solid, Sherpa, Beach Pigs, Dictaphone Blues and much more will set the West alive with the sound of music.

Natasha Khan, standing in black and white on the front of this third album’s cover naked, with a clothless man dangled off of her shoulders in a particularly unerotic fashion is suggestive – but not of sex. Better known by the stage name Bat For Lashes, Khan appears to be implying that this album might just be, for lack of a better double meaning, stripped back or naked. Tracks ‘Laura’ and ‘Marilyn’ have been doing the rounds on their own without the rest of The Haunted Man for a wee while now. Although showing her persuasion for “firstnaming” songs, ‘Laura’ is a song about a suffering friend that showcases Khan’s ability to coin emotionally evocative pop tracks from far out on the left field – the way she conjures up a sombre, yet infatuating mood from a few piano keys much like Amanda Palmer’s Dresden Dolls days is flawless. She’s had some help along the way creating arguably her most vulnerable album. Beck appears on ‘Marilyn’, but don’t go looking for ‘Loser’, and Portishead’s Adrian Utley helps out on ‘Horses Of The Sun’ – a jaunt reminiscent of ‘We Carry On’ layered with an edge of intermittent buoyancy tied into the baleful metronomy. The Haunted Man as a name expresses something haunted, but it’s more a subconscious metaphor than an expression of Halloween-esque. ‘Oh Yeah’ and title track ‘The Haunted Man’ borrow from Gregorian chant, with a male chorus splashed between

sporadically placed percussion. As they escalate in intensity, it gets close to being haunting, but a truer descriptor of this record is exposed. It’s emotionally heavy and while captivating, it isn’t overtly draining to listen to because it lacks a certain kind of accessibility. Selfish wouldn’t correctly sum up The Haunted Man because Khan’s heart bleeds itself out all the way through. It’s an enriching and alluring outpouring in that sense, but distances its burden. It’s like a friend who’s having some issues and says, “Hey bro, I’m having a moment and this is what’s up” and before you can say, “Well, I’m here for you “they’ve buggered off to deal with it. Khan has definitely come of age. Even with the trials reported of her experience in making this album, she’s maintained her edge of savior faire and is easily one of pop’s most imaginative contemporaries. She’ll be making her way to Laneway this summer and there’s no doubt she’ll put on one of the most uniquely sensual sets. WRITTEN BY JUSTIN FOWLER

He’ll get down to the nitty-gritty, while always maintaining a sense of humour.

FRIDAY 26 EPISODES TV ONE, 11PM

The award-winning comedy follows a successful British husband and wife comedy team and their unsuccessful move to Hollywood. It’s more of former Friends’ Matt Le Blanc poking fun at himself and his failure (a la Joey), but it is also a good laugh and a true behind-the-scenes look at fame and fortune.

I can’t remember the last time Disney made a film as deranged and intensely morbid as Frankenweenie. With its cast of pale, saucer-eyed, zombie-like characters, macabre corpse-resurrecting, graverobbing shenanigans and gloomy monochrome palette, Tim Burton’s return to stop-motion animation is fairly nightmarish stuff for what’s essentially “family entertainment” (the irony, of course, is that back in 1984 when Burton submitted his original Frankenweenie short for Disney, he was fired). A homage to James Whale’s 1931 classic Frankenstein, this is his spryest, most consistently enjoyable – and refreshingly Johnny Depp-less – film in years, especially after the leaden miscalculations of Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows. It plays like textbook, backto-basics Burton though, so Frankenweenie isn’t exactly

awe-inspiring in the way it might have been had it had seen the light of day in the ‘80s. Rather than break any new ground, John August’s script is a time-tested, boy-and-his-dog tale, borrowing and referencing – Edward Gorey, Vincent Price (see Martin Landau’s science teacher Mr Rzykruski), Gamera, other Burton movies – as it revisits those old themes (playing God, mob mentality) from Mary Shelley’s novel. But for dog-lovin’ celluloid nostalgists, Frankenweenie’s predictability and lack of ambition can probably be forgiven. Sparky’s an adorable creation, and if you can see past the film’s string of horror nods, Burton has made a highly affectionate bit of ghoulishness that remembers the warm, lustrous magic of black-andwhite images flickering across the big screen. Go behind the stage of The Rolling Stones’ 1978 USA tour in support of their Some Girls album. Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Centre in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18 July, 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who clearly love the show.

Some people loved it; some people booed it out of the cinema. Terrence Malick’s films take some adjusting (ie The Thin Red Line and walking through grass for three hours), but it is undeniable his work is beautifully shot. Brad Pitt and Sean Penn star in this three-time Oscar nominated film.

It’s difficult to find anything bad written about Arcadia, and everything good is written in understated tones. This lovely café likes to keep its praise on the down low because that’s the kind of modest people they are. Truth is, owners Tom and Jane have a fantastic place to meet on a cold winter’s day or for a gorgeous summer lunch. They have kitted out their café with a great retro vibe, a wide range of delicious things to eat and drink, and not to mention top-notch service. BARS

Shit worth dRINKING

VERONA 169 KARANGAHAPE ROAD

Described as home to some “contemporary cuisine” and famous for its chocolate cake, another reason to hit Verona up is for their extensive wine list and top-shelf delights. The cool thing is you can sit in your own private booth for two, or sit at the bar and enjoy a slice of inner city life.

GRAND CENTRAL 27 HOOD ST

Tucked away off the beaten track, Grand Central is the kind of place to suit all needs, all kinds. Earlier in the evening, sit back and sip on a cocktail two. When the DJ starts doing his thing on the decks, you can expect to be joined by a large range of guests on the dance floor.

BUNGALOW POLO CLUB

First established in Bangalore, India in the 1800s, this Wellington bar celebrates the club’s rich history. The bar has maintained the sense of style and class that would have been dripping from the original club rooms. They’ve retained an old-English sense of style with red curtains, mood-setting lamps and even polo clubs and helmets on the walls. Although they’re not quite as hoity-toity as their original counterpart, it’s the perfect place for outstanding service for an after-work wind down. You can also sign up for their (non)exclusive club to receive some pretty sweet deals.

ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN ENGLISH SINGER/SONGWRITER ELENA JANE “ELLIE” GOULDING HAS ESTABLISHED HERSELF AS ONE OF THE HOTTEST THINGS IN CONTEMPORARY POP MUSIC. She’d bagged the BBC’s Sound Of... prize before debuting at number one in the British charts back in 2010 with Lights, as well as taking home the Critic’s Choice at the Brit Awards – only one of two people to take both those titles in the same year. The other was the now famously heartbroken Adele back in 2008. She even performed a take on Elton John’s hearttugger ‘Your Song’ at last year’s royal wedding bash. Labelled as the most enthralling and authentic music star of recent times, Goulding heads our way shortly to start touring on the back of her latest album’s release. Let’s put her under the microscope. Goulding’s voice is her biggest asset, described as having a hoarse timbre. It’s not really enough to throw the unique stamp at her forehead – edgy and breathy female vocalists have been lurking about pop in common supply for a while now – but what she does with it, well, that’s enough to set her apart. She sits on a hypnotising perch in the valleys between indie and pop, sewing her sweet soprano voice between a variety of musical altitudes from the synth heavy to the soft hooks. When you travel away from her mainstream singles such as ‘Starry Eyed’ and ‘Under The Sheets’ – which have showcased her two-move robo-dance abilities on MTV – there’s a certain complexity about the mystic texture of her music. She uses her voice like an instrument. For her first visit to New Zealand, she’s put us up at the top of the tour schedule for the launch of her much anticipated album Halcyon. Her debut album was re-released with six extra tracks as Bright Lights in November 2010, so whether or not the new record is second or third is a matter of personal opinion. It is, however, a follow up nonetheless for the clearly starved fans who sold out her first night at Auckland’s The Studio. The lead track ‘Anything Could Happen’ is a somewhat blatant observation – at least in title – of a lass that came from small town Herefordshire in England to become a

staple fixture on many a radio station. It’s also a track of irresistible propulsion and ferocious power with a euphoric optimism that is stalked by doubt and ambiguity. When she sings repeatedly, “I know it’s gonna be”, you can hear Goulding clinging tenaciously to confidence. Even as uncertainty snaps at her heels, she is striding towards the future, but with a glance over her shoulder at the pain in her past –at war with herself, with the opposing instincts that have always informed her songwriting. So irresistible is her charm, Nike have leapt on Goulding, offering a few fans the opportunity to meet the overnight superstar during her time in Auckland. By attending Nike + Run Club fans have the opportunity to win some sweet Ellie Runs Nike merch’ too. Stardom has treated Goulding pretty good so far – affording her the opportunity to hang out with the likes of Tinie Tempah, Chiddy Bang, Mika, Bassnectar and boyfriend Skrillex. She’s also toured alongside Passion Pit and Katy Perry. For a Kiwi connection, Halcyon was co-produced by herself and Kish Mauve’s Jim Eliot, who also worked on Ladyhawke’s selftitled debut. Halo and I go way back – all the way back to the very first. So I had a few thoughts going through my mind when I stepped into Microsoft’s Sydney headquarters, for a multi-hour Halo 4 marathon.

First, I played Halo 4’s single player story mode, which sees the welcome return of series protagonist Master Chief. Without giving anything away, he ... finds things are not as originally intended. It struck me immediately how technically impressive the title is. Materials look every bit like they should, levels are rich with detail and the polish on display is second to none. Particles float through the air, helping you appreciate when you’re under the effects of gravity, vacuum, etc and the lighting effects look simply stunning. Part of our single player experience was our introduction to the Prometheans, Halo 4’s new enemies. These guys are badass and their weaponry adds welcome variety to Master Chief’s arsenal, too. Next we headed over to play some multiplayer – starting with the game’s traditional death match modes. This continued to reinforce the vision – and budget – behind the title, with exploration leading to all sorts of nooks, crannies, and fun gameplay opportunities. Next was the outrageously generous Spartan Ops, Halo 4’s cooperative campaign. Spartan Ops will be released in five-mission chunks, once a week, for 10 weeks after launch. Each episode comes with a cinematic and each of the 50 levels can be played by one to four players, online or off. And unlike most DLC, Spartan Ops is included in the price. That’s right, a 50-mission bonus campaign you can play alone or with friends, for free. We played through the first part of an episode and the experience oozed Halo. Every critical element of the experience was there and having chums to kick around with heightened the enjoyment I got from it. It’s easy to get jaded when you see high-profile games day in, day out. It’s easy to slip into reviewer mode, and to start looking beyond what you’re seeing, to the flaws that lie beneath. What’s rare is when, while looking for faults, you can’t find any. Without question, Halo 4 is now the game I’m most looking forward to for the rest of the year.

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? I believe that everything should have a cute/ pretty style to it, so I try to incorporate the latest trends around New Zealand with a touch of my love for cute Which historical figure had some wicked style? I think it goes without saying that Audrey Hepburn did. She’s glamorous and stunning. Her style was subtle and elegant – a real lady. What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? I am a big fan of some of Katy Perry’s outrageous outfits and I have always loved Nicole Richie’s style – I love a woman who can dress up a casual look. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Leggings worn as pants. This is the absolute worst and everyone knows it! Yet I still see them being worn as pants all the time. What’s the must-have look this season? I am quite a casual kind of girl who is also a student and I am loving skinnys with a shaggy knit at the moment, then accessorising that with a neon clutch or jewellery.

FRESH OFFERING FOR HALLOWEEN THE QUIRKY KIWI COMEDY-HORROR FRESH MEAT IS A WILD RIDE AND AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT FOR THE CAST AND CREW. Welcome to Halloween. It’s the time of year when new horror movies are released that push the boundaries of good taste, common sense and yet another Paranormal Activity movie comes out where once the Saw films reigned (since that franchise is well and truly buried). This year, there is a new kid on the block: Fresh Meat. A Kiwi offering, dishing up splatter horror-comedy in the manner in which we are accustomed to – with plenty lashings of blood, sex and violence. The film centres on an urban middle-class Maori family called the Canes, led by an academic father, Dr Hemi Crane (Temuera Morrison). One day, as they go about their suburban picture-perfect lifestyle, their home is invaded by a gang of dysfunctional criminals – the Tan gang, who have just made a break out of prison. But these unsuspecting convicts soon learn they messed with the wrong family as the tables are turned and the Cranes dark secret is exposed: they are cannibals. Fresh Meat is not your typical horror. Yes, it has all the best ingredients – “car crashes, shoot outs, lesbian shower scenes, cannibalism, comedy, horror and thrills, all in one movie”, according to director Danny Mulheron – but the Maori culture and stereotypes play a huge part to the serious side of the film, particularly since it is penned by award-winning writer Briar Grace-Smith. Although the original script was Canadian, Briar took considerable steps over three years to putting a New Zealand stamp on the piece. “What I love about this movie the most is the fact that we were even able to make it,” Danny says with a laugh. “It starts out like another New Zealand movie: there’s the school and the kapa haka, then suddenly we’re at a truck getting shot at, a hand is found in a fridge and people’s expectations are repeatedly turned on their heads for the rest of the film. Danny says it was intriguing to watch the way a “usually serious, soulful Maori playwright steeped in magic realism” came out with a black comedy-splatter horror mixed with a considerable undertone of cultural questioning. “All good horror movies are comedies at their heart, but Fresh Meat is also a satire on all sorts of things - an outrageous mash of circumstances that keep elevating the story. It’s a comedy about New Zealand and consumption and ambition. Every character wants something in this movie. Plus it’s so outrageous to do a thing on Maori cannibalism which is completely taboo. I think it shows a degree of maturity in New Zealand that we are actually able to laugh at this idea.” Known for playing harden Maori characters – his most famous role, of course, being Jake Heke in Once Were Warriors – Temuera says he was attracted to the script for its real comedic side and for taking on a character that was, well, a little bit stuck up with a side of total madness.

“Hemi thinks very highly of himself and he is very educated. He’s just rather partial to human flesh as a viable, sustainable lifestyle. I was in Rotorua at the time of the elections so there were political billboards everywhere. I moulded Dr Hemi Crane on a Maori MP [Te Ururoa Flavel] I saw smiling down at me. “I fed outstanding Maori politicians and University men into my head and talked with Danny a lot about it. We created a very groomed and precise look. I’ve also tried to soften my look by using my fingers, portraying an educated and fast thinker.” One of the more interesting characters is Hemi’s boarding school-educated daughter Rina, played by 18-year-old Hanna Tevita. The part-Samoan, part-Dutch/New Zealand actress was plucked from her seventh form school production – it was pure coincidence that Danny was in the audience, watching his niece (who was in Hanna’s class) perform. He recognised a strength in Hanna’s ability to play strong Maori figures, given she was reading a monologue from Verbatim from the point-of-view of a male Maori prisoner. She was given the opportunity to audition for a role she never would have expected: a lesbian schoolgirl cannibal. “I was really taken back [by the script],” she says. “I had never done anything like this before and of course, I was really nervous. I did have doubts at the beginning. There were Maori speaking bits in it and I’m not Maori. I was like, ‘Oh my god I can’t do that’.” There were further challenges to overcome for the young actress, who was just 17 at the time of filming. One of them being that the majority of her scenes involved some heavy-handed stuff – something that caught her off guard. “The audition script had scenes when I’ve just come back from boarding school, when I am talking to Will and then there was one scene where the bad guys are trying to molest me, so I was really surprised by what I read, but once I understood how it all fit together I loved it.” Being the lesbian schoolgirl in a horror film requires certain prerequisites, as you can imagine, for the male audience members: she is often in her underwear, she makes out with another chick and there is a shower scene. It’s a lot to take in on your first day. “The first day [of filming] was one of the shower scenes so after I got that one down I wasn’t too nervous. I got used to being half-naked pretty fast,” she laughs. “But I really loved the gory scenes because I had never seen stuff like that, the props and the fake hands. It was so cool.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER IN CINEMAS NATIONWIDE: THU 25 OCT
