RADIOHEAD VECTOR ARENA
7PM, SOLD OUT
If you were one of the unlucky ones who weren’t on the internet within the first 10 minutes of tickets going on sale, you’ll have to listen to Radiohead at home. But if you were lucky enough, no doubt you’ll be buzzing so hard you’ll wake up all your flatmates and the next door neighbours to brag about how epic it was. Because Radiohead is awesome.
The flame-haired eccentricity of Miss Tori Amos gets a slight re-jigging here, but it results in a fuller sound which emphasises her orchestral roots and all the added drama that entails. Back in the days before ‘Cornflake Girl’ and her big breakthrough with debut album Little Earthquakes, Amos was all set to become an instrumental star after winning a full scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Luckily for us things didn’t pan-out and she went on to deliver a stellar career by carving out her own niche of art-pop/alt-rock. Gold Dust is a kind of wish fulfillment for Amos, as she gets to explore a “what might have been” scenario by performing with 52 men and women from the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra. Of course she’s front and centre here, singing and playing piano to her own songs – something which was unlikely to happen had she followed her original path. This latest album is like an overview of her career since kicking the Peabody Conservatory to the curb, as it plucks a selection of gems from Tori’s back catalogue and reworks them with the help of those aforementioned Netherland musos. And it’s not that much of a stretch, even for those with a limited knowledge of the freaky piano diva’s sound. Her music was made for this kind of treatment, and in fact, you could say that it’s almost a reverse engineering of her original
songs, which could easily be the remix versions of what’s laid out on Gold Dust. As is always the issue with retrospective material, the case of what’s missing becomes as big a talking point as the quality of what is included. And of course, the first question asked by fans will be, “Where the fuck is ‘Cornflake Girl’?” But what is on Gold Dust does become more epic in both its louder and quieter moments, thanks to those boys and girls from Netherlands finest. Lead song, ‘Flavour’ feels refreshed through its reimagining, although Tori’s piano and fragile voice is still paramount. ‘Precious Things’ becomes that much grander, with the orchestral touches being more subtle but just as juicy. The one fear is whether those orchestral moments start to washout any depth of feeling – something that’s at the very core of what Tori Amos is all about. No need to worry as the spotlight remains constantly on the red-head at the front. An intelligent, quirky beacon guiding the music home. WRITTEN BY DARREN MASLIN SINGLE OUT NOW: ‘LOST IN TRANSLATION’

SHOW ME SHORTS GENERAL RELEASE
SEE TOURS AND EVENTS FOR SEASONS
The seventh annual festival is back! The competitive screening shows 40 of the best short films made in New Zealand and around the world. For those who can’t face sitting through a feature-length film, these are for you as each film is between two to 20 minutes long, in six themed sessions that run for 80 minutes.
With Argo, Ben Affleck-thedirector continues his admirable streak of making us forget Ben Affleck-the-actor, who for a period starred in embarrassing careerkilling dreck such as Surviving Christmas, Gigli and Daredevil. Extending his reach far beyond the Boston crime milieu of his first two films, Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Affleck demonstrates more of his proficient directorial chops in dramatising the Iran hostage crisis of 1979 where 52 Americans were held hostage by Islamic militants in the US Embassy in Tehran. Six diplomats managed to escape the siege, and their rescue – a seemingly crackpot plan devised by CIA “exfil” agent Tony Mendez (a fine, understated Affleck) to disguise them as a Canadian film crew scouting exotic locations for a fake sci-fi movie – gives Argo its strangerthan-fiction appeal.
Toggling between severe political turmoil of the Middle East and the tawdry world of Hollywood makebelieve is a dicey tonal balancing act, but Affleck has turned in a superbly acted, effortlessly entertaining brew of ‘70s-style political thriller, film-within-a-film satire and caper hijinks. Though the film never quite achieves the gutsy, dizzying horror of the first reel – where the rebels storm the Embassy – it does maintain a nerve-wracking ticking-bomb momentum, even if there’s no doubt in our minds that it’ll head for a comfy, optimistic conclusion. One could chastise Affleck for making a movie that too neatly condenses a messy event, but that doesn’t stop Argo from being a film worthy of its incredible hook: engaging, thoughtful, completely gripping. MELANCHOLIA
PRIME, 9.35PM
RIALTO CHANNEL, 8.30PM
The third album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has long been regarded as a classic, demonstrating the musical and songwriting virtuosity of a great front man and his band. This documentary tells the story behind the conception and recording of this rock ‘n’ roll album and the dramatic transformation in the band’s career that took place following its release.
When he’s not make embarrassing racial slurs on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival, Lars von Trier is making films so bizarre they make David Lynch’s mind bend. Melancholia focuses on a newlywed couple and her family as a giant planet is about to collide with earth and destroy it. Enough said.

SIGH NO MORE MUMFORD & SONS FANS THE ALTERNATIVE FOLK-ROCKERS ARE MAKING THEIR WAY DOWN SOUTH. WE LOOK BACK AT THEIR INCREDIBLE RISE TO FAME.
After Deliverance set up banjos as one music’s most uncool instruments (next to bagpipes, no offence) no-one would have thought in the year 2010 they would become one of the more popular ones. Shedding the stereotype of hillbillys sitting on their front porch in a rocking chair, British folk-rock group Mumford & Sons gave the banjo a new lease of life with their toe-tapping, frantic strumming ballads and pop-folk songs that harked to a time gone by, a sense of old romanticism and rustic country life. And we loved it. With a name that sounds more like an antique furniture company that a 21st century band, Mumford & Sons has an undefinable sound. Comprised of twenty-somethings Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston “Country” Marshall and Ted Dwane, the sound on their debut, self-produced album Sigh No More reflected a time of civil unrest, of lovers in waiting as the seasons go on by, land disputes, and telling lies. For a band with an ode to the past in every sense of their style and sound, much of Mumford & Sons’ songs on Sigh were seeped in literary allusions, with references from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing on the title track and Macbeth on ‘Roll Away Your Stone’, to Plato’s The Odyssey and the novels of American Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist John Steinbeck, who’s biblically influenced novels told tales of social inequality and capitalism. Smash-hit single ‘Little Lion Man’ garnered mainstream radio airplay – perhaps for its use of the word fuck which was constantly bleeped out on the air, but yelled with great gusto in pubs across the country – but was like nothing we had heard before. As bassist Ben says, hearing their music “sandwiched between Beyoncé and Jay-Z [on the air] – what does that say about us?” They weren’t always a hit with critics though. Lead vocalist Marcus Mumford says he “read two reviews and I cried” on the release of their first album. It is perhaps the earnestness and exploration of faith on many levels that didn’t appeal to some. “[There is] a deliberately spiritual thing, but deliberately not a religious thing,” he explains. “I think faith is something beautiful, and something real, and something universal, or it can be. We all have our separate views on religion, but I think faith is something to be celebrated. I have my own personal views, they’re still real to me, and I want to write about them.”
After Sigh caught people’s attention, Mumford & Sons continued to grow in popularity over the course of 2011 and 2012, winning several major awards including the European Border Breakers Award for their international success and the Brit Award for British Album of the Year. Their tours of the US were a success and the perfect place to ‘road test’ new songs for the follow-up album. “We had started writing new songs well before we got into the studio to record,” says Mumford. “At first, we peeled ourselves off the road quite reluctantly. We love playing live, obviously, but it had also become an important part of our creative process, we had been writing and rehearsing in sound checks. But then we fell in love with recording again. As a band, we’ve never been closer or more collaborative, all working to our strengths.” Their sophomore release, Babel, continues to expand on similar themes and sounds. It became the fastest selling album of 2012 in the UK, selling over 158,000 copies in its first week, and was the biggest selling debut of any album in 2012 in the US, selling 600,000 in its first week. I guess Mumford is laughing now at those two reviews. While the biblical illusions are more powerful, the banjo more prominent and the obscurity of some of the lyrics more apparent, Mumford & Sons are back and ready to blow New Zealand away with their first headlining tour. For a group that prides itself on being first and foremost a live band, expect their live shows to be more than just the sum of their parts. “We basically consider the album like an advert for our live gigs,” says Mumford. “And I find it easier to sing songs over and over if they feel honest, if we feel passionate about them. That’s an important thing: we need to be able to feel what we sing every night, and believe it.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER SEE THEM LIVE: MUMFORD & SONS FRI 02 NOV VECTOR ARENA, AUCKLAND SUN 03 NOV TOWN HALL, WELLINGTON SUN 04 NOV TOWN HALL, WELLINGTON TUE 06 NOV CBS CANTERBURY ARENA, CHRISTCHURCH

RICHARD FALKNER, ONE OF THE WRITERS BEHIND MAKE MY MOVIE WINNING FILM HOW TO MEET GIRLS FROM A DISTANCE, SHARES THEIR STRUGGLES AND THE APPEAL BEHIND A MOVIE CENTRED ON REJECTION. In a time of Facebook stalking and the internet, “peeping Tom romcom” How To Meet Girls From A Distance doesn’t seem all that bizarre. But to develop someone’s stalking tendencies in a film and make it funny? That’s a concept cleverly executed by writers Dean Hewison, Richard Falkner and Sam Dickson. “Well, we had a bit of duty free,” laughs writer and lead actor Richard, “and we weren’t actually going to enter the competition. We rushed it in a couple of days before it closed. After a couple of bottles of duty free tequila, we had a brainstorming session, just to see if we could get three ideas that we liked.” The idea that stuck ended up becoming the premise for the film: stalking, I mean, struggling to talk to women. Richard plays lead character Toby, who manages to repel the ladies any way he can. Living with his mother, times are getting tough in the dating world, but he’s found a way to hone his technique, knowing everything there is to know about a girl and her habits – before he even meets her. The group’s poster of lead actor Richard lurking behind an attractive, yet anonymous – a look of eager anticipation on his face – won them the Make My Movie competition earlier this year. Entrants had to submit a trailer, a blurb and a poster about their future film. The team first made it to the top 12 thanks to industry decisions and social networking, before taking out the public votes to win the grand prize of $100,000 and the chance to get their movie poster made into a reality with the help from New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand on Air and Flick.co.nz to name but a few. While Richard assures me it’s not based on any one autobiographical experience per say, he says there is something relatable about Toby’s plight, although his character makes some pretty terrible decisions. “I had to channel a lot of embarrassing experiences,” he laughs. “There’s that morbid fear of asking people out, that fear of rejection, but Toby has never quite moved on past that [one bad time]. “I don’t think that feeling goes away either. You have that person that is kind of hot or whatever and you still bumble trying to say things in front of them. You try to feel like you got through that part of your life.” Having not given the project any serious thought past the entering point, Richard says the group had a hard road ahead of them to write, cast, produce and direct their first feature film in less than six months. “It became an intense script development project once we found out we won,’ cos we hadn’t kicked into pre-production until then. It was mayhem. We did a first draft and we did about five other drafts after that. It was really hard to get it together in that time; we were always a couple of pages behind the eight ball. We pulled some very very late nights.”
The project garnered some serious attention and once the script was in place, the long process of casting began with more than 200 people auditioning in Auckland and Wellington for a place in their flick. “We had lots of friends we wanted to cast, but they had to audition like everyone else,” he says. “We had to find the best person to serve each role, which was really cool because we ended up working with people we hadn’t before and they were all lovely.” The theatre actor also had to go through the grueling audition process before he won the lead role – his first feature film after many “big pieces in small films or small pieces in big films”. “It was a couple of terrifying weeks because if I didn’t get the role I wouldn’t have been involved in the film all that much. So I really had to back myself.” Shooting took place in and around Wellington, with sets built in office apartments to serve some of the more technical indoor scenes. While $100,000 seems like a lot of money to go around, Richard says it could have easily been blown in one bad move. “It had to be budgeted like mad. The production office team, they had to go nuts because you know you could completely stuff it up, but they managed to make it go really far and we had a very supportive crew who were OK working for very little.” Although the winners of the filmmaking competition, Make My Movie doesn’t guaranteed any public exposure or distribution of any kind. But after nailing their opening sessions at New Zealand International Film Festival earlier this year, the film was picked up by Madman Entertainment and is now on a nationwide release. “We had worked so closely and were so wrapped up in it that although we were still enjoying it, we had such a skewed perspective on it,” Richard says. “Wellington had an insane response to it, but we couldn’t help wondering of it was home crowd and friends and family, but showing it to Auckland in a way was more terrifying because you didn’t know how they would react. “It was a triumph just getting into film festival and then to have Madman pick it up, we couldn’t be happier. Hopefully they’ll take it across the ditch, but remains to be seen how well it does in New Zealand. I’d love to take it to some kind of festival overseas. I think it’s the kind of film that could go anywhere.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER HOW TO MEET GIRLS FROM A DISTANCE IN CINEMAS: THU 01 NOV

This year’s Call of Duty is heading into uncharted territory, placing the action in the not too distant future for the first time. Set in 2025, it looks set to give gamers another run at the Michael Bay-esque explogasms that the series is rapidly getting a name for. Black Ops 2’s villain is Raul Menendez. Like the nefarious Makarov in Black Ops’ sister series, Menendenz is hell-bent on taking down the west. Somehow, he has managed to get his hands on the key codes that control almost every big gun in the world, and has decided to go all Skynet on humanity. Your character - David Mason, the son of Alex from the first game - has got to stop him. The Black Ops was pinged for having rote gameplay, and the firefight I sat through did still have that grinding turkey shoot feel. But thankfully, Treyarch has taken the community’s views on-board to spice things up a bit. In a bid to breakup the linear feel of the single player story, Black Ops 2 features new “Strike-Force” missions. “When you are telling a story and crafting an experience, there is a need to move a player through that,” John Rafacz from developer Treyarch explained. “But in terms of what is going to keep players coming back, Strike Force levels speak to that. We want to try to break [the game] up, but not for the sake of doing what [we want to] do.”

Overall, it looks like Black Ops 2’s core multiplayer experience is sticking true to the series, and will be offering fans of the title another chance to get their competitive gaming going. New weapons, such as a very useful deployable mine, and new kill-streak rewards, such as an automatic hunter-killer drone, all feature and can be used to good effect. Without the benefit of a full play-through, it’s unknown what impact Strike Force missions, the shift forward in time, or the other new features will have. Regardless, Black Ops 2 is looking to be one hell of a sensory overload. In that context, getting the overall narrative right, and guiding the player through the single player story, will be key tasks for Treyarch. WRITTEN BY CONRAD REYNERS

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Barkers has always prided itself on providing high quality, well-cut garments at an accessible price point. When Ray started the business 40 years ago, he wanted to bring the attention to detail and style he’d seen on his London OE home to the New Zealand male. That vision is what made our company grow and we try to honour it every day – honest, classically-honed garments which are aware of trends without being beholden to them. It seems to be working.

What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Jack Huston from the superb HBO series Boardwalk Empire (he’s Anjelica’s nephew). The guy has an uncanny talent for giving black-tie staples – like midnight three-pieces and skinny tuxes – an effortless cool-kid spin. We all love an excuse to dress up and this guy nails it every time. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Ugg Boots. They weren’t made to be worn outside! What’s the must-have look this summer? Short sleeved shirts are back, but they’ve gone on a diet. Think ‘50s California, slim-fitting, with highcut sleeves. Pattern wise it’s simple, sun-baked stripes and checks – but don’t let the beachiness tie you down – feel free to tuck them in and dress them up. Colours/patterns big this season? It’s all about horizontal stripes, textured plains and washed back brights. Bold, but subtle, if that makes any sense. Below the waist our personal favourite are the strawberry red chinos – a wardrobe-transforming device for under $100.

LAUGH YOU BUGGERS OR ELSE!
THE NOTORIOUS COMEDY ICON IS BACK IN NEW ZEALAND AND SHARING WHO IS ON HIS (S)HITLIST. Although one of Australia’s most dangerous men is sitting in the back of his taxi, the driver appears unperturbed. This might be because he’s enclosed in a knife-proof bubble that protects him from his would be assailants-slash-customers. Or it could be because his esteemed passenger is travelling under his real life nom de plume, Heath Franklin. Franklin does appear pretty relaxed for a high vis-crim-cum-comedic personality, as he casually chats on the shoe phone whilst heading in to the Adelaide domestic terminal. Already a few dates into the The (S)hitlist, starring Heath Franklin’s Chopper, he’s had opportunity to road test material using local small town Aussies as guinea pigs. The title for the show comes from a particularly bad experience with a takeaway and unmentionable postevent dunny stop. “I’d been doing a heap of shows in rural Australia and as always there’s very little cuisine on offer after we strike the set each night,” he explains. “So inevitably you end up at the local chippie or some such.” Experience after experience told him not to go there, but night after night he returned. So it goes on the list, but there are others – restaurant serves your dinner cold. Put it on the (s)hitlist! The word ‘chillax’. (s)hitlist! Friend stabbed you. (s)hitlist! Just saw a romantic comedy you didn’t like... well maybe put yourself on the (s)hitlist for that one! “My material is about those little obscure things [like bad takeaways] that we all collectively hate,” Franklin says. “It’s finely crafted ire, manifested in verbose, with a wide smattering from the palette.” Put less delicately ‘Chopper’ is well known for his colourful language. “Actually, it’s funny. The audience roll in each night with the airs and graces, but after the show they’re all F this and F that! I like to think I’ve ‘Chopperised’ them!” Franklin’s obsession with Chopper – the notorious Aussie outlaw – began about 2001. A film based on the real Mark ‘Chopper’ Brandon came out in 2000, launching not only actor Eric Bana’s career but Franklin’s too. “At the time everyone was into Austin Powers. I was obsessed with this lovable rogue, with his bad tats, handlebar moustache. He has this mix of ultra violence and charm. The books about him kinda led to his own career on TV and radio. He’s a big personality in his own way over here.” The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, there. Little Franklin was always a bit of smart arse, even at school, terrorising teachers at his North
Sydney school with a pranks and colourful outbursts. “I was always trying to think of the most obnoxious things to say, to get a laugh. I was in detention so much that one day I got thrown off the bus because the teachers thought I should be there. I was actually innocent that one day. Now, of course, I’ve managed to turn stirring into a paid hobby.” Finding fame on Aussie’s Network Ten’s The Ronnie Johns Half Hour, which he and some Uni mates co-wrote, he’s been nominated for a Logie and an ARIA award nominated. “Chopper was a way of articulating my frustrations at things,” he explains. “When I complained to my fellow writers about stuff (during writing the TV show) they wouldn’t take me seriously. Then I did the same with the voice of Chopper. ‘Yeah, you should do that, he’s great’ they’d say.” “So Chopper became the voice of pent up frustration, just generally being pissed off at stuff. Every now and then I have to power cleanse my brain, but I’ll keep doing Chopper forever, I think. Not like other comedians who have to change characters (when it gets too much), I keep thinking of ideas, a certain level of outrage to ‘Chopperise’, which I’ll translate into his ‘voice’. There’s plenty of gold left in the hills!” Asked about how the real Chopper feels about his humorous doppelganger, Franklin is a little coy. “I’ve never actually met him, but I’ve met his dog ‘babysitter’, friends, associates, men in dark coats with bulging gun pockets… They either say he loves the act or there’s a contract out on my life! It’s probably somewhere in the middle.” Franklin has taken his character to many places, including the Edinburgh Festival. “Different cultures identify with aspects – they all have bogans, they all get outrageous and they all can shout ‘fuck’ when it all gets too much. Universal themes, really.” Franklin is so comfortable in his adopted, tattooed skin that he’s able to operate quite spontaneously on TV shows such as 7 Days, where he’s a regular and will be appearing next week. “That partly comes from dealing with hecklers, too.” Nobody messes with Chopper. Laugh, you buggers – or else! WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR SEE HIM PERFORM: HEATH FRANKLIN IN CHOPPER’S (S)HITLIST See Tours and events TICKETS ON SALE NOW: LAUGHINGSTOCK.COM.AU
