Californian blues musician, Seasick Steve, has been announced to play a one off New Zealand show in late December. A show described by reviewers as a “wonderfully sincere and surprisingly intimate performance that might just as well have taken place in a stomping bourbon soaked roadhouse’, and Seasick Steve as ‘a man, a band, an idea, an ideal, a truth, a poet, a master storyteller.” Scan the QR code with your smartphone to go to Groove Guide’s mobile website for breaking news, reviews, interviews and more features.

The Walt Disney Co. announced last Tuesday that it was buying Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion and is planning to create a new Star Wars trilogy. The seventh movie is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The new trilogy will carry the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond Return of the Jedi. “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Lucas, chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm Ltd. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”

TOUR

Sad But True (aka The Secret History of Country Music Songwriting, Volume 1) is the story of two men. The first is Delaney Davidson – one of our country’s best and hardest to define songwriters, who flits between raspy country and harrowing blues at the drop of a hat. The other is Marlon Williams, a relatively newcomer to the New Zealand music scene. These two have made the brilliant, but unpopular choice of shining a light on one of music’s more maligned avenues: country. If the word itself conjures images of straw-chewing cowboys strumming their “gee-tars” and mewing out a campfire story then you are not alone. Fortunately, that means this is the very album for you – one that shatters clichés and breathes new life into a very old form of musical expression Opening song ‘Traveling Creature’ certainly lives up to the promise of the album’s title with its mournful melody and banjo picking. This is genuine, heartfelt country music without any of the genre’s infamous shortcomings: I’m talking about rhinestones, polyester suits, perms or flag-waving hyper-patriotism that sends modern music fans running for the proverbial hills. These two gentlemen cut straight to the heart of the music without any of the trappings that have given it such a bad name for the past 50 years. The crafty duo also touch on country’s less well-known dark side – more Hank Williams Jr than Kenny Rogers. With song titles such as ‘Bloodletter’, ‘Cold and Blind’, and ‘Demons Claws’,

what exactly did you expect? Puppies and posies? Dolly Parton? Williams and Davidson are an inspired double act playing the sweet and sour routine with the right degree of grit and charm. Davidson is grimmer and forceful in his delivery, while Williams’ plaintive croon evokes the wild landscapes better than any lyrics could. The two are evenly spread across the album, from lead vocal duties to writing credits. Davidson and Williams are an inspired partnership that certainly makes me hope for a Secret History of Country Songwriting Volume 2. Sad But True also marks the first release from Lyttelton Records, who can boast their own 24-track analog recording studio and a hot tub. They are also an outfit that firmly declares the age of the CD is dead and gone. You will not find this album at your local music shop on a small round piece of plastic. Instead, head online for a digital copy or (even better) seek out a copy on classic vinyl. WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

SATURDAY 10 GLOSS – SEASON 1 TVNZ HEARTLAND 8.30PM

The 1980s in New Zealand TV was filled with the glamour, big hair and shoulder padsepitomised by Gloss, a drama focusing on the high-fashion magazine business and on the Redferns – a wealthy family juggling love and life in the fast-paced industry.

SUNDAY 11

Affection for professionally assembled films about rich New Yorkers may be necessary to really get into this mild thriller, but I was ably carried along by its authentic portrayal of a rarefied world. Richard Gere is very comfortable as a rich businessman who comes across as the midpoint between Michael Douglas’ character from Wall Street and Michael Douglas’ character from The Game. Richard Gere seems to irritate some people, so if you’re one of those, stay far away from this as he’s practically in every shot. I enjoyed watching his power monger squirm when the going got tough, and he also convinced in the family scenes. It’s a tough ask trying to make a fraudulent hedge fund manager sympathetic these days, but Gere manages to seem genuinely conflicted at times. Susan Sarandon

is fantastic as his wife, but she should’ve been in it more. Newly-minted indie queen Brit Marling (Another Earth and The Sound of My Voice) proves herself very much at home among the heavyweights as their daughter. And Whit Stillman fans will get a kick out of seeing Chris Eigeman as Gere’s right hand man, although he too is underutilised. Plus there’s a weirdly appropriate cameo from Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter as a fellow captain of industry. There isn’t much in Arbitrage we haven’t seen before, but it contains the kind of conventions that are fun to revisit with a skilled director and a game cast. BY DOMINIC CORRY, FLICKS.CO.NZ

This café has clearly spelt it out that they made their burgers. Using their hands. They’ve been voted “Best Burgers” in Auckland by Metro and Viva magazines for their light-weight, value for money creations. They have a drive through like certain chain takeaways but don’t be fooled: your pattie will be fresh.

CAFÉ STRATA 13 THACKERAY ST

With a beautiful outdoor dining area, Cafe Strata is close to workplaces in the city but has the feeling of being out of the city. With a range of gluten-free and vegetarian fare, they can accommodate your needs and deliver big flavour for everyone.

BIAN SUSHI & DONBURI

Who doesn’t love sushi? It’s healthy, easy to eat on the go and a light meal. But not all sushi is created equal and when you tuck into your roll you want to know the ingredients are authentic and made fresh. Bian prides themselves on carrying on this tradition, while offering a new approach to sushi and donburi (translated as rice bowl dish). They have a wide range so you can opt for the standard teriyaki chicken, or take your mouth on an adventure with a sashimi bento box filled with goodies or even an una don (teriyaki eel on rice).

Shit worth dRINKING

THE GOLDEN DAWN 134 PONSONBY ROAD

So they share the name of a right-wing political organisation in Greece, but that’s not what they are about. What they are about is providing wines that are exemplary, inspiring and even controversial. Located from all over Europe, there are some real gems.

LIBERTY LOUNGE 101 GREAT KING STREET

Oh man, way back in time before it was the Liberty Lounge, it was the Outback. Many a great 21st, underage sneaky night out and stage dance was enjoyed at this great pub. This place has all your top 20 hits and a few misses too. Shots necessary.

SUITE BAR

Part of suite is the word suit, as in what you’ll need to enjoy the quality boutique spirits, wines and beers in this chic Lower Hobson Street bar. No, really, but in all seriousness this cocktail and lounge bar is packed full of God’s Own drinks and the owners have done all the hard work compiling the top-notch drink menu. But if smooth, silky spirits aren’t your thing, why not try Manhattan-style cocktails, reclining in the comfy leather couches and soak up the sweet sultry sounds of funk and soul. You’ll be classier than Ron Burgundy.

WHO SHOT ROCK & ROLL: A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY Sat 10 Nov - Sun 03 Mar Auckland Art Gallery

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki’s upcoming exhibition, Who Shot Rock & Roll, features over 100 photographers and many rare or unseen images. Groove Guide takes a look at what it ’s all about. Famously, 14 year-old lead singer Annabella Lwin was implicated in scandal when she posed nude for the cover work of Malcolm McLaren’s manufactured 80’s tribal punk creation Bow Wow Wow. Just as the original painting did in 1863, the shot caused quite a stir. For the location, photographer Andy Earl spent one Sunday morning driving up and down English riverbanks trying to find a location before glancing upon a pond in Surrey that appeared to him to be very similar to that in Manet’s The Luncheon on the Grass (Le déjeuner sur l’herbe). However, Lwin’s mother did not see the artistic parallels quite the same way and alleged exploitation of a minor for immoral purposes, instigating a Scotland Yard investigation. McClaren was accused of promoting Lwin as a “sex kitten”. With the event spiralling sales in the US well out of control, he was well impressed. McLaren knew the power of the image in Rock’n’Roll. That saucy number is one of over 173 images that feature in Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki’s upcoming Who Shot Rock & Roll, which travels to Auckland this month. Featuring over 100 photographers and many rare or unshown images, this landmark exhibition includes photographers like Diane Arbus, Henry Diltz, Dennis Hopper, David LaChappelle, Annie Leibovitz, Linda McCartney and Albert Watson. Compiled by the Brooklyn Museum and curated by photo historian/author Gail Buckland, Who Shot Rock & Roll could well be the first museum exhibition to recognise the role of photographers as collaborators, conspirators and creative forces in the history of popular music - possibly even unofficial band members. Here, we’re reminded that, in addition to the lyrics, the music, the perpetrators, the popularity of rock ’n’ roll (be it Pop, Punk, No Wave or Hip-Hop) owes a huge debt to photography. Mapping out a rich terrain in which photographers, photojournalists and artists overlap this collection captures the magic of music and of the musicians, in all their glory, in all their excess, and maybe even in all their embarrassment - Jimi Hendrix in full trance; a belligerent Johnny Cash saluting his audience; the intense drug addled stare of Amy Winehouse; Bjork in the leafy altogether; the Ramones tearing up a ragged stage; Jagger superimposed as a wild cat.

Focusing on individual photographers, their works, their agendas, lives and worldviews, Buckland illuminates a complex cultural history that is both manipulated by corporate and social conformity, yet intentionally subverts it at every opportunity. But the best thing about this exhibition is the mix between publicity, illusion and vulnerability. Her dream was to blur those lines and peel off the layers whilst maintaining that the airbrush is still in overdrive. Her book, which accompanies the exhibition, is a deeper dive, with comments alongside the luscious layout of plates and images. It includes the most poignant of shots: Presley in his early days sitting in grungy train carriage en route to Chattanooga listening to the acetates of ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ and ‘Anyway You Want Me’, just as his fans would on a cheap mono record player. Even the King knows which peg to hang his hat on. But this exhibition is far more than just a collection of photos. Throughout the Who Shot Rock & Roll season the Gallery will hold a series of five Open Lates. These feature artists as diverse as Goth savant Dear Time’s Waste, VNZMA Critics Choice Award 2012 winner Watercolours (aka Chelsea Jade), Sean Donelly (SJD) and The Eversons. At the first Open Late on Tue 13 Nov, visitors to the exhibition will enjoy a Watercolours performance and New Zealand music legend Tim Finn will reveal which of the Who Shot Rock & Roll photographs rocks his boat. The Who Shot Rock & Roll visitor programme offers free talks by local music experts such as Josh Easby and writer broadcaster Nick Bollinger. Graham Reid discusses Shooting the Beatles and Creating the Sixties; Misha Kavka looks at Women in Rock; and local snappers Bruce Jarvis and Josh Easby will no doubt spill the beans on crashing the stage during those rock royalty visits in the 70’s and 80’s. Plus you can catch a number of great Rockumentries including the ultimate comment on the creation of the lie and the truth behind it – Julian Temple’s The Filth and The Fury. It’s a shame McLaren’s no longer with us for this exhibition – he’d be laughing all the way to bank! WRITTEN BY Tim Gruar WHO SHOT ROCK SEASON: SAT 10 NOV - SUN 03 MAR

AND THE WINNER IS... GROOVE GUIDE LOOKS AT THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF THE ANNUAL EVENT. The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. A night of glitz and glamour, where musos across the country make an appearance – and sometimes a lasting impression – at the industry’s biggest event for the night. But behind the beautiful people in their well-dressed suits and dresses, there are always lashings of scandal, catfights and mud wrestling. No no, I’m kidding. Everyone (minus Home Brew) was very well-behaved. We look at some of the highlights and lowlights of the 2012 awards. HOME BREW’S ANTICS: When the hip-hop group showed up with one members dressed as an Arab and carrying around a goat on a piece of rope, red carpet host comedian Guy Williams made a very good point when he said, “Aren’t you guys a little too underground to be doing stuff like this?” He was probably right. They were also partaking in animal cruelty as rumour has it they left the goat tied to the front post of Vector Arena, with organisers extremely baffled. With the group nominated for five awards and winning Best Hip Hop Album, they gave (in my opinion) a questionably good performance at the show which saw them busting out of portaloos at the side of the stage before bouncing their way up to perform. Their acceptance speech also seemed like a contest to drop in as many F and C bombs as possible in an attempt to shock, before texting at the podium and referring to many people as bitches. GIRL-ON-GIRL RIVALRY: I’m sure the media made this out to me more of a drama than it was, but when our two stunning leading ladies of music were pitted against each other in the awards, it was a battle of the beauties. Unfortunately, it was pretty clear who was going to win. Gin opened the awards with a rendition of ‘Man Like That’, her big hit at the moment as it plays in a Heineken ad featuring James Bond Daniel Craig. Her lack of stage presence was certainly noticeable as soon as Kimbra took to the stage later. Although she may have been wearing an outfit that looked like she’d raided Big Bird’s wardrobe, her electric, animated, high-energy showed why she took out five Tuis as her international experience right from day one was noticeable. CELEBRITY GUESTS: I don’t think the VNZMA has ever been exposed to so many famous faces. Kudos to a) the artists and b) the organisers for swinging not one, but several big names. Mumford and Sons, looking a little worse for wears, refuted that thy had hit the mini-bar on their flight over, but spared no delay tucking into the Steinlager Pures at both the pre-party, the awards and the after party. Their presence also gave people the opportunity to finally remark in person who similar lead singer Marcus Mumford looks to lead singer of Six60 Matiu Walters.

US musician Ben Harper looked sufficiently uncomfortable on stage when presented two awards seemed to miss his cue for the second and there was an awkwardly long pause. He also wore the most enormous fedora I have ever seen. Our honorary Kiwi looked like he was having a good time, but kept a low profile. Hollywood star Karl Urban, sans helmet, presented the award for Best Music Video. Lacking any real comic value or character, he was pretty straight laced about it, but he’s got a beautiful jaw so it’s okay. To round the list out, Boy director Taika Waititi took to the stage in an odd presentation that was either an attempt at awkward comedy or he was legitimately drunk. He forgot what he was presenting, gave the worst introduction of the People’s Choice VIP co-host (a poor high school student name Rory…never got his last name, and apparently neither did Taika). The warbling lead up included comments such as, “Tonight’s a real who’s who of people I have never heard of”, “Thanks mum for lending me your jacket”, “Kimbra’s hot…nah, she’s alright”. LIVE SHOWS: Performances by The Black Seeds proved why they are still one of summer’s best live acts. If it had been summer inside Vector, it would have been the perfect setting for some brews and barbecue. Newcomer Annah Mac did exceptionally well for her first awards, failing to take home any Tuis, but gave a solid performance of her huge hit single ‘Girl in Stilettos’. She gets the award for best set and back up dancers, bringing bowling club members along to shimmy and shake in the background a la her video. Ironically she wasn’t wearing stilettos. HOSTS WITH THE MOST? Hosts Ben Boyce and Shannon Ryan made some perfectly fine jokes to link everything together including getting Six60 up on stage before they burn the furniture and the world’s oldest Nickelback joke about playing their CD forwards is worse than backwards. They were undoubtedly funnier than ex-Shorty star Kimberley Crossman trying to rip herself off and reality TV star Jaime Ridge following suit, but coming off like a commercial for a watch company. Both failed. It’s another year done and dusted, with some happier than others after their awards collection. A WHOLE LOTTA LOVE FOR LED GROOVE GUIDE’S MARK KELLIHER SPENDS A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM WITH LED

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is renowned for housing some of the most modern Western masterpieces on the planet. This iconic home of art sees thousands of eager tourists and enthusiasts pour in every day to view classics from van Gogh, Picasso, Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo. However, on this occasion, MoMA played host to the advanced screening of Celebration Day, a two-hour film featuring the live extravaganza that was Led Zeppelin’s reunion show in London’s O2 Arena on December 10, 2007. I had the privilege of being one of the first in the world to witness the tribute dedicated to their dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The blues-infused rock ‘n’ roll show saw founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant joined by Jason Bonham, son of the late drummer John Bonham to perform 16 tracks carefully selected from their impressive catalogue. This was Led Zeppelin’s first headline show in 27 years– a moment many of us thought would never happen - making it one of the most anticipated concerts of the 2000s – no pressure lads! Venue size was always going to be an issue and sure enough over 20 million fans applied for tickets. With odds only slightly better than winning lotto only 18,000 people were blessed with the honor of seeing the final hurrah by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees and soon-to-be recipients of the Kennedy Centre Awards. Led Zeppelin had to produce a performance that added to their legacy and their ability to execute a live set decades after their heyday turned out to be a well calculated risk. ‘Good Times, Bad Times’ launches the concert and film you couldn’t help but share that sense that you were part of something special – but when doesn’t a Led Zep opening riff have that affect on your soul and on this occasion the band were in the room with you. Page was mesmerizing and stole many moments – now a refined elder statesman but still playing grueling guitar solos. Plant looked on with admiration and at times it seemed that even the front man couldn’t quite believe Page’s ability at the ripe old age of 68. With impressive but straight-ahead production values, they ripped through classics such as ‘Whole Lotta Love’, ‘Rock And Roll’, ‘Kashmir’, and ‘Stairway to Heaven’. It was obvious that Jason Bonham was ecstatic and emotional to be playing in honor of his father and while there’s only one John Bonham - having a direct descendant on the sticks adds an endearing authenticity. After two hours of mind-blowing rock ‘n’ roll and an unusually vocal ovation from the gathered press – it was time to pop downstairs for a royal audience with the band. I was pretty surprised what good nick they were in considering the Over the Hills and Far Away Good Times that occupied at least two decades of their lives.

To say they were excited to be there would be an exaggeration but hey it’s Led Zeppelin and the show was 5 years before which is a lifetime ago in Rock n Roll and yet they still graced us with their presence. He’s sung about fools before and when he was questioned by one about another possible reunion Page abruptly responded, “In December it will have been five years since the O2 show… so it seems unlikely that there wouldn’t have been a whisper or hint if we were to get together again. It seems pretty unlikely doesn’t it?” Plant then proceeded to back his band mate, calling out a member of the press as a “schmuck”, which filled the room with laughter, but certainly ruined one fool’s day. Bonham on the other hand certainly used the media opportunity to express his appreciation of being able to perform with his father’s former band mates and good friends. “This really is something special,” he said. “It’s something I’ve dreamed about for a long time. It was a huge huge honour.” The drums and bass combination has always been the engine room for Led Zeppelin and when Jones expressed that playing with Bonham was “just as exciting as it always was” you could feel a welcome sense of belonging that Jason now shared with his Dad’s old chums. Jimmy Page had the last say, summing up the bands complete respect for one another and their musical legacy. Responding to the point that the band was never critically well received - due to their album-orientated rock genre and continued resistance to releasing singles or radio edits. “All I can say is that they never got the joy of playing a three hour show with these guys.” Translated – “What the fucks your point” Well put Jimmy!

Celebration Day is a narrative from the band’s point of view whilst on stage and on stage only. Those looking for an insight similar to that of the late Peter Grant’s (Led Zeppelin’s manager) in The Song Remains The Same – where he used numerous F and C bombs – might be disappointed. However, if you were one of the nearly 20 million fans who entered the ticket ballot to go to the show and the 100 million who didn’t but wished they had – Celebration Day is the perfect addition to your collection. Unlike any Resident Evil before it, Resident Evil 6 gives you the option of three different campaigns, each with its own start, story arc and ending. While Resident Evil 2 had something similar, what you really got back then was the same story told from a slightly different angle. This time you have three stories each with their own unique characters, enemies, boss fights, and plot twists. Capcom have gone all out to make each campaign feel different from the others and have gone as far as giving new HUD designs to each one. While that may seem like a small change, mixed with the varied gameplay it’s enough to make every campaign feel like a separate game. Let’s get one thing out of the way now: fans of the old Resident Evil games need to accept that the franchise has changed. It’s hard to watch something you love change from what it started out as, but when you’re finished with RE6 you’ll be hard pressed to call the experience anything but superb.

DIRTY TIME ON THE THE MACHINE By Logitech

The ‘Washable keyboard’ is Easy to clean and dry so if you a tend to eat and drink all over this keyborad there is definatly no excuse to have sticky keys. RRP $48.50 amazon.com

Variation is the key to RE6 and it’s shown in every aspect of the game. There’s a large selection of guns to find/unlock along your way and there’s plenty of variety in the characters you can play as – and in the places you’ll go. It just wouldn’t be Resident Evil without hulking boss fights and some kind of weird mutation causing the infected people to become even more worrying. Resident Evil 6 nails this, with each campaign focusing on a specific subset of enemy – some will be easier than others and some will have you dreading their appearance. What really sets this Resident Evil apart from the previous ones is the presentation. Resident Evil has always had a cinematic feel to it, but this takes the series to a whole new level. The sound quality is perfect and the cinematics are downright amazing, helping keep the game feeling like a playable Hollywood blockbuster.

If you were left wanting in RE5 there’s a good chance RE6 will satisfy you. There’s a reason you’re being fired at, there are plenty of tense moments and stress, the storytelling is superb, and “zombies” make a return. Resident Evil 6 isn’t perfect, but it’s still a game that everyone should own. WRITTEN BY REAGAN MORRIS

ENCORE

ASSASSIN’S CREED III Assassin’s Creed 3 is a monster franchise, with multiple titles and spinoffs - including books and an animated series. This time around, our main protagonist - Connor, a wannabe Assassin - is right on hand to witness the birth of America (and its labour pains too), as the redcoats try to maintain England’s steely hold upon the rich new land - by force. The story moves along a fair pace, although, after an exciting first chapter, it does seem to be a little light on any actual... assassining for quite a while. But this is a big big story, with multiple characters, woven in with actual events from history, and these things take time. Variety is the key to the game. You get to play as a few different characters, and in vastly varied environments - from cities to wild frontier, with snow and wild animals. You truly haven’t lived until you’ve been trotting along, minding your own business in the serenity of the woods, when an entire wolf pack has leapt snarling out at you, causing you to gasp out loud, and nearly drop the controller. Gameplay includes things like free running through trees and up and down cliff faces, sailing the Caribbean seas with all guns blazing, and weaving in and out of alleys and trotting across the rooftops of early Boston and New York (the cities are extremely detailed and were designed based upon historic maps of the time.) This is a really, really big game, enormous, even! The scale of the maps alone is quite staggering, and there are just so many things to do. There are so many main story missions, side missions you can do for people you meet along the way, and things to collect. There’s hunting, naval missions, doing up the homestead, people to help, quick tunnels to find and open up, assassins to recruit, etc, etc, etc. And that’s just what’s going on inside the Animus. As usual, Desmond’s got a few present-day things of his own going on as well...

grooveguide.co.nz

The scenery is, at times, absolutely spectacular. The frontier is a particular masterpiece: as you make it to the top of a cliff, and look out over the endless untouched forests and fields, it’s breathtaking. The battle scenes are tense and gripping, using the new game engine to its best advantage. Connor brings a few new weapons to the party, including a bow, a rope dart, and a tomahawk - amongst others. His flashy fighting style is quite different to the other characters you control, especially with the tomahawk. And the new naval battles are a welcome addition to the franchise. Set upon rolling seas, ships crash into each other, avoid rocks, scramble with sails to get out of firing range of enemies, and duck for cover. It’s fast paced, riggin’ good fun. And the story, of course, is what keeps you playing an AC title. Sure, collecting all the eagle feathers, or paintings, and rescuing all the citizens may send you into completionist ecstasy, but finding out what the Sam Hill is going on is what you really keep playing for. The twists and turns will keep you guessing, and in this respect, AC is as fresh and new as when Desmond first lay down in the Animus.
