Original band members - Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi will make a return to New Zealand in April for a show at Auckland’s Vector Arena - their first New Zealand concert since performing at the Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival in January 1973. Two more acts have been revealed for the St Jermone’s Laneway Festival 2013. Australian beatmaker Flume and American indie band Polica will join the already impressive bill. Harley Streten aka Flume has had an impressive rise for the 21-year-old beatmaker and production whiz that played his first show just one year ago. His debut album landed itself at #2 of the ARIA Charts in its first week of release – and made its self in the Top 40 in NZ too. Minnesota’s Polica know how to make Auto-tune sound truly soulful. Founded in 2011 by singer Channy Leaneagh, and Ryan Olson (Gayngs), Polica immediately won over hearts everywhere, thanks to the band’s dense-yet-tender electronic fields, distorted bass and austere vocals. Canadian duo Crystal Castles has outdone themselves with their most recent release III. Their chaotic brand of synth/noise pop has developed into a sophisticated electro alt-dance album with mature themes and wellorganised pieces. Crystal Castles have always been somewhat in a genre of their own and the new album is no exception. This time around the vocals fill a more prominent space becoming a sweet ethereal contrast to the aggression in the main musical body. Crystal Castles’ third album sees them move away from hard distortion and screeching vocals towards structure and charm. While traces of their former work remain, it is clear there has been a conscious shift in style. The opening track and first single, ‘Plague’, sets the tone of dark grandeur that builds upon itself throughout the album. Lyrically, this track hits hard, launching into the theme of the oppressed that is carried throughout the album. The disorder, attitude and ear-piercing electronics often associated with Crystal Castles have not been lost. ‘Pale Flesh’ begins with a frantic high-pitched squealing hook before launching into Alice Glass’ creaturelike, haunting whisper. There is a striking combination of a strong melody line accompanied by hectic, disjointed overtones. ‘Violent Youth’ showcases some of the newer delicate Grimes-esque vocals that have enriched the new album. When put with the oriental melody line, this number is really
lovely. Not every song contains these new softer vocals. Old fans will be happy to hear ‘Insulin’ with its hard lo-fi rhythm and crazy attitude filled screams delivered with classic Crystal Castles’ urgency. ‘Sad Eyes’ is probably the most memorable track for me. The incredibly 1990s inspired beat sets this dance number apart and disguises its unnerving message. III has real thematic direction. The album works cohesively as a whole, continuously returning to core bass lines and melodies. The music and lyrics work together to form a serious and effective concept. The pounding, forceful bass, frantic electronic overtones and elusive vocals seamlessly serve as a metaphor for the violence, fear and helplessness depicted in the lyrics. Glass seems almost obsessed with purity, particularly that which has been stripped from those who should remain innocent. The prose is almost protective, as Glass subtly reveals the disturbing nature of humanity. The dark cryptic nature of the lyrics ties in perfectly with the eerie and disjointed music. It is clear that Crystal Castles are speaking out against abuse, violence and the destruction of innocence. Long-time fans will enjoy Crystal Castles’ expansion of their unique genre and as for those who have previously avoided them for their raucous sound, I think many will be pleasantly surprised. As human beings, we share a natural desire to shield children from all the physical dangers in the world. This instinct often translates to emotional dangers too, though this French-Canadian Oscar-nominated drama makes a rousing and affectionate argument against being overprotective in the face of death and grief. Emigrating from Algeria, Bachir applies for a role in a Montreal public grade school where he replaces a teacher who took her own life (in that very classroom). Where painted walls are meant to cover the grim demise of the class’s beloved tutor, Bachir encourages a different healing tactic: self-expression. Mohamed Fellag excels as the brokenyet-benign Bachir, whose own dark past plays as both an empathetic aid and an emotive hindrance. Writerdirector Philippe Falardeau exhibits
an expert understanding of a growing child’s psyche – one that would be lost if it weren’t for the film’s flawless young actors. The emotional dynamics shown by the child performers are nothing short of astonishing, from the kids’ chuckle-inducing natural cheekiness towards Bachir’s native language to the slow build-up of one young lad’s guilt, leading to an agonising confession that’ll weigh down your heart, dragging your tear ducts with it. This is cinema at its most powerful. Masterfully displaying the fragile dimensions of young grief-stricken minds, Lazhar boldly illustrates the therapeutic power of letting those minds speak out as opposed to keeping them in the dark during the darkest of times. He’s Britian’s bad boy of comedy – a recovering sex and heroin addict, an alcoholic, the man who broke Katy Perry’s heart (supposedly), with a mouth made for prison.
“My life is just a series of embarrassing incidents strung together by telling people about those embarrassing incidents,” he said later in his memoir My Booky Wook.
But Russell Brand turned his life around, got clean and turned to yoga, the Hare Krishna movement and charity.
After taking his act to the US in 2009, he recorded a special for Comedy Central before his tour. While his act didn’t take off immediately, it was his film work, which made him a recognisable face and a household name in the US. They had never seen anything like him.
Does that mean he’s gone soft with his comedy? No way. Brand burst onto our screens in Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 2008, where he played a character much like himself: a recovering sex addict rock star, dating the gorgeous TV star Sarah Marshall. From his side appearance, the role lead to many others: He reprised the character in Get Him To The Greek in 2010, starred in the remake of Arthur and Rock of Ages, not to mention he voiced characters in childrens’ films Despicable Me and Hop. But despite training as an actor, it was stand-up comedy where he began his craft after one too many run-ins with the drama school head. “I am a stand-up comic trained as an actor,” he explains to Reelz.com. “I had a terrible drug problem whilst learning my craft as an actor.” The talented young man was just 15 when he was inspired to become an actor after nailing the role of Fat Sam in Bugsy Malone. He was accepted to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts (Britain’s oldest training school), and his tuition was funded by Essex council for his introductory year, with potential funding for three additional years. However, during his introductory year, he was expelled for bad behaviour and drug use. His first significant stand-up appearance was at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year final in 2000. Although he finished fourth, his performance attracted the attention of Gagged and Bound Comedy Ltd agent Nigel Klarfeld. That year, he also made his Edinburgh debut as one-third of the stand-up show Pablo Diablo’s Cryptic Triptych, alongside ventriloquist Mark Felgate and Anglo-Iranian comic Shappi Khorsandi. Brand held his first one-man show, Better Now, at the Edinburgh Festival, which was an open and honest account of his addiction to heroin. Again using the embarrassing incidents of his life, he went on to launch his first worldwide tour with Shame in 2006.
As well as acting, Brand also hosted an MTV show, Dancefloor Chart, while touring nightclubs of Britain. “I used to go around to night clubs and talk bizarre and unusual things (with people),” he said of his time on the show. ““It made very good TV because of course they were all on drugs. They didn’t understand what was happening to them. They would talk about peculiar things and people would just get into the conversation. Of course, at that time, I was on crack and heroin, so I was on more intoxicating drugs than they were, so I was at a disadvantage.” Brand is not one to shy away from the mistakes of the past or the more recent years (his divorce to Katy Perry perhaps). As confronting as he is, his stand-up tour in New Zealand will be an eye-opening experience into a life that has lived it all: the good and the bad. “What I’ve learnt - to my cost - on several occasions in my life, is that people will put up with all manner of bad behaviour so long as you’re giving them what they want,” he says of his past. “They’ll laugh and get into it and enjoy the anecdotes and the craziness and the mayhem as long as you’re going your job well, but the minute you’re not, you’re fucked. Blonde Ambition Blondie will play the Trusts Stadium Arena this week supported by UK punk icons the Stranglers and young Kiwi upstarts The Drab Doo-Riffs.
In 1980 the music department of the Wellington Library was located in the basement. It was badly lit, musty and overstuffed with faceless classical works by Bizet, Mendelssohn, Brahms and even Lloyd Webber. Everything was on vinyl and spun at 33 1/3 RPM. To a scruffy adolescent, wagging last class in his disheveled private school uniform this was possibly the worst place to hide from the prefects. It had that very uncool academic atmosphere that made you want to grab your selection as soon as possible and depart at haste. But then across the dirty worn orange carpet, tucked into a dark corner a hot, blonde vixen, standing in a dominant pose, decked out in a wispy lil’ white slip dress and surrounded by a group of skinny suited, leering men stared out at me. She was strong, in control and utterly sexy. I didn’t even know what sexy was, but I took her home anyway and we spent a beautiful night together. Then the next day she became my first ‘dub’, by taping up the holes on The Best of the BeeGeesI’d discovered the joys of creating my own mixtape. Over time I’d collected all her best, ‘Denis Denis’, ‘Call Me’ and the funky, grungy ‘Rip Her to Shreads’ which chugged along like a Velvet Underground outtake, and of course, ‘Heart of Glass’. That one in particular caught my ears, with its disco groove, thumping bass and that neat techno vibrato. Plus Debbie’s high, Medussa vocals - seductive and venomous. It was also the first and probably last time I’d ever heard the lines “Pain in the ass” sung on Ready To Roll. Blondie have scored quite a few milestones over their career. Starting out as the unofficial house ban at CBGB’s in New York City, the home of punk, grunge, New Wave, No-Wave and pretty much any kind of new music you can think of. They hung with virtually everyone of note and sucked up the vibe from the streets. ‘Rapture’, for instance was probably the first rap song to become a mainstream hit, and this was ages before the Beasties, Eric B and Rakim or even MARRS were noticed. They also fed off bands like The Ramones, who never hit the big time in the same way but hugely influenced the early Blondie rock’n’ roll sound. I was
horrified to find out, via Lester Bangs awesome on-the-road photo book, that Debbie Harry had dated Joey Ramone. How could she do that? I hope she was de-loused. Then when they finally embraced the enlarged coiffure, Blondie broke up following the release of their sixth studio album The Hunter in 1982. Harry, of course went on to pursue a solo career but was never quite as awesome as those days of Parallel Lines. She eventually slowed down to care for partner and former band mate Chris Stein, who was diagnosed with Pemphigus, a rare autoimmune disease of the skin. Blondie reformed in 1997, and renewed success with a no.1 in the UK ‘Maria’ in 1999. They toured and performed worldwide and were even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Last year they even spat out another studio album, Panic of Girls and are still going strong. Like many pioneers of the modern sound, Blondie are not content to sit quietly and watch others take up the mantle. Chris Stein confided in an interview recently that, like the Rolling Stones, performing was in his blood. He had to be on stage on a regular basis. And as for that teenage crush? I never really shook it, though there were fleeting moments with Wendy James (Transmission Vamp) and Neneh Cherry. But it was never quite the same. If you lived in Fairhaven City, chances are you would be dead. In this fictional location, just walking down to the corner diary is a risky activity. This is a place where drivers get rewarded for careening into billboards, people are trying to break land-speed records in a Ford Escort, and cops seem to sadistically thrive on hazardous pursuits. The upside is, everyone left alive would own some really sweet rides. This is pretty much the entire premise for Criterion’s latest high-octane racer. And it’s a barrel load of fun. In fact, it makes the previous eighteen Need for Speed titles feel as slow and boring as a cardboard box full of rocks. It’s clear that Criterion have smooshed together the best aspects of their past Burnout games to deliver one of the best free-roaming locales I’ve seen in a driving game. Especially when combined with the day-night cycle and weather effects that realistically impact on your driving experience. It’s hard not to recommend this game. Non-driving fans are going to love the sense of speed and destruction, while petrol-heads have got a great range of cars and a very solid driving mechanic to keep them satisfied.

YOU KNOW THE NAME, THE FACE AND THE SAME SOUND. BUT WHAT DOES NICKELBACK REALLY THINK OF THE CRITICS. Nickelback – for those who are unaware – are a Canadian rock band from Alberta, formed in 1995. The band’s music is classed as alternative rock and believe it or not, they are one of the most commercially successful Canadian groups. They have sold almost 15 million albums worldwide and are the second best-selling foreign act in the US behind The Beatles. Now, Nickelback are back in the little old New Zealand this week to play at Vector Arena. We spoke to bass player Mike Kroeger (half-brother of lead singer Chad) about the highs and lows of their career. First of all, how did Nickelback come about? Well, it was kind of a situation where the three of us: me, Chad and Ryan our guitar player and another singer – Chad was only playing the guitar at the time. We were playing a lot of cover music and having fun, travelling around, getting paid a couple of bucks here and there and, you know, trying not to actually do real work. And then it was decided that we would like to record our own music. We got in there and made a seven song EP and then just started playing every gig we could play. We’ve done them all: good, bad, ugly. And since then not much changed except for the buildings getting bigger that we play in and the travel’s getting easier. When did you get to the point where you’re like, “Oh-oh, we’ve hit the big time”? Until we had released the single ‘How You Remind Me’ everything to that point had been…I don’t wanna use the word “failure”, but it hadn’t been a success. We got really frustrated, but we just continued on and played every gig we could get our hands on. We didn’t have a record company, so, you know, Chad was phoning radio stations and working them, ‘cause he’s really persuasive, and I was handling our sales, so I was making CDs and mailing them out to the record label. Then somebody heard it and heard that we’d sold 20, 000 copies by ourselves. They decided to sign us and then we recorded ‘Silver Side Up’ and the first single. And when that became – I think it was in 2001 – the most played song in the world that was kind of a pretty good indication that things were turning around and it was looking all better.

It’s no hidden secret that you guys as Nickelback almost have a cult like status for being disliked especially on social media – for some people it’s a bit of a past time. What do you say to those people who take pleasure from putting you down? I wouldn’t say anything to them. I think they’re having a pretty good time. There’s never really been a better time for hate than with social media. You know, anyone who has an internet connection can spread hate, but they can also say nice things, which is what our fans do. I kind of have a mixed feeling about that. I don’t think it’s really hard to go negative on things, I think it’s pretty easy actually. It’s kind of boring. How does one keep their longevity, especially in the music industry with all the changes, for well over 15 years? I think it’s up to the people. You know, if people all of a sudden stopped or limit the amount of music they are buying…the reason I say that is because that’s the only way to track [our success]. You know, back a few years the only way knowing how you were doing was based on sales. It was kind of a barometer for how you were succeeding and that people liked it. Now, that barometer doesn’t exist to the same degree. What’s your favourite thing about coming to New Zealand? The pies, man. Haha, no actually I think it’s the pub life, to be honest with you. So far we have had so much fun in the pubs – and don’t ask me the names because I probably knew them when I went in, but I didn’t know them when I went out. You have spent a fair bit of your time touring right around the world. How do you resolve issues within the band? I think the most conflict we’ve ever had was when things just weren’t going very good and we were having a hard time. But now, the problems are a lot smaller. You have to deal with them and we don’t fight, we work things out. Not to say that we have differences of opinion from time to time, but I don’t think anybody can say that they don’t have that. But it’s nothing we can’t work through, over the years we’ve always been through worse. What’s one piece of advice you’ve never forgotten? Ok, this is one of my favourites and it’s really helped me through. It was actually given to me by a lawyer we had. The advice was to never underestimate the stupidity, greed or laziness of your fellow man.
