taming Laneway
The last International band being added to the NZ Laneway Festival line-up for 2013 is Tame Impala. This Australian psychedelic rock project fronted by Kevin Parker, caught many eyes and ears after the release of their debut album Innerspeaker (2010). In October this year Tame Impala released another stonker Lonerism - a meaty 12 track psych rock stunner, already announced as the NME’s 2012 Album of the Year, Triple J’s Album of the year for 2012 and gaining hugely positive reviews and accolades all over the world including here in NZ. And adding in an extra local band for good times The Eversons. This group is from Wellington, who produces witty, punchy guitar-based pop tunes. TOUR
The year was 1992 and Bill Clinton was elected into the White House in the wake of the Gulf War. This is also the year that Rage Against The Machine’s debut album hit record stores – empowering a generation of disaffected youth to the same degree that it shocked and frightened the hell out of their parents. In celebration of this milestone the good people at Epic Records have put together a 20th Anniversary edition of that album complete with digitally remastered tracks, bonus tracks, and expanded liner notes including a short essay on the band by Public Enemy’s Chuck D. Rage Against The Machine’s music was a perfect product of their age. It had the raw, unsettled attitude of classic 70s punk, the guitar heroics of heavy metal, and the incendiary delivery of preCompton hip hop. You could not have designed a more impressive musical outfit to hit the airwaves in that day and age. Anniversary editions of classic albums are often dubious affairs. The fans already own the original record, having likely graduated to their third or fourth copy, and it is often readily available. What makes this version of Rage Against The Machine stand out is that it fully allows the listener to, in hindsight, gauge its importance to the world of music. The cunning mixture of grunty rock with booming hip-hop paved the way for most of the 90s non-grunge related trends. Artists like Korn, Incubus, Beck, and Cypress Hill sat up and took serious notice of what was going down. Genres were no longer cut-and-dried affairs and
the combination of these seemingly incompatible elements became easy bedfellows practically overnight. The band’s trademark anthem, ‘Killing In The Name’, through endless censored repetitions on mainstream rock radio, might have lost some of its impact with time. The only cure is to crack your stereo up to neighbour-bothering volumes and indulge in one of music’s greatest anti-social statements a new, “**** you I won’t do what you tell me!”, repeated like a knife-edged mantra. Zack de la Rocha’s agitated vocals and revolutionary lyrics have certainly not lost any of their power over the last 20 years. The 20th anniversary edition contains three live bonus tracks (‘Bombtrack’, ‘Bullet in the Head’. ‘Take the Power Back’) all cribbed from various single b-sides. They are all perfectly satisfactory – especially De la Rocha’s political rants between songs - but far from essential listening. While rumours continue to circulate about a new album from Rage we might just have to content ourselves with their impressive legacy for now. WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

THE BACHELOR TV2, 10.35PM
Slim but suitably poignant, Rachael Wilson’s Yakel expresses preservational interest in its indigenous subject – a small, littleknown tribe in Vanuatu – without coming across as didactic. Surveying the culture through the humble wisdom of its ageing leader, Johnson Kowia, and Michael Single’s enrapturing HD cinematography, it’s an illuminating snapshot of a land where time appears to have stood still. The frail Kowia, who doesn’t know exactly how old he is (108, press notes say), has held his role as the chief of Yakel for several generations, but his physical condition is weakening, necessitating someone more capable to take over. And with this, Kowia is troubled by what the future may hold for his people and their customs. Sometimes ethereally immersive, Yakel’s unhurried pace and stately, patiently observing
camerawork complement the peaceful, self-sustaining, completely untarnished nature of the community. With its towering banyan trees and healthy crops, their land is a rich source for everything they require: clothes, food, shelter. But the looming threat of “harmful Western influence” is an everpresent concern for Kowia: having witnessed the abuse wrought by missionaries in the past, and how easily taken the younger generation are by the possessions and lifestyles of Westerners, the hope of keeping the culture alive has never been stronger. Kowia’s dying plea will leave you misty-eyed by the end, but you’ll also be moved by being transported to a harmonious existence that’s utterly alien to most of us. BY AARON YAP, FLICKS.CO.NZ

LUNA BAR 314 HIGHGATE
A world away from the Scarfie-ville located down below. Overlooking the city lights and the harbor, the aptly titled bar gives beautiful scenic views (and maybe even a shot of the moon) in their open plan dining area. With a comprehensive list of gourmet cocktails and wines, it’s perfect for a class night .
STATIC
THE PORTLAND PUBLIC HOUSE
5 HOOD ST
463 NEW NORTH RD
Described as an indie-rock-dance bar, Static does everything: blistering rock gigs, a thumping dance floor, and lots of drinking. They have played home to some international and also local acts, blasting their rock ‘n’ roll for all to hear. Get proper rowdy!
VIBE Key
Like a slice of raucous pub life from the heart of the US – but it’s located in the centre of Auckland – the Portland Public House is more than your average local. It’s a home away from home where it’s not about what you do, but where you are from. Spawned from the creative minds of co-owners Welshman Ross Griffin and Kiwi Damien Noel, PPH is the culmination of 10 years worth of ideas that flowed over a few beers in Byron Bay, fusing old-school hospitality with a cultural twist. The idea behind PPH is sharing is caring, and everything is designed to be so – from the open layout of the locations through to the conversation you can engage in with the bar staff or friends over a few beers. With a solid Kiwi bach aesthetic and lounge-like setup, it’s a real sensation of summer with a gourmet twist on traditional Maori fare offered by the kitchen (think pork belly boil-up, raw fish, and house smoked fish with Maorioli). Although the pub is set up in the middle of city life, step away from the hustle of Auckland and into a unique space, full of family, friends, good food and fantastic daily live music. Each night features a number of different local musical acts with a healthy dose of very special national and international guests who drop in for a jam on any given night. You are guaranteed to see a friendly face, the staff “always know your name”, and most importantly, remember your favourite pint.

PLAY IT LOUD B.O.B THE SIX TIME GRAMMY NOMINATED RAPPER AND MULTIFACETED PRODUCER AND SONGWRITER HAS ANNOUNCED A ONE OFF SHOW AT THE BEGINNING OF 2013, WE TAKE A LOOK AT WHERE IT ALL STARTED.
B.o.B the six time Grammy nominated rapper announced a one off show in New Zealand before he moves onto join the Australian Big Day Out. He’s bringing an all ages concert, titled PLAY, to the Logan Campbell Center which sees a full line-up of New Zealand Hip Hop talent, from the country’s hottest boy band Titanium, to DJ, producer and member of Hip Hop pioneer’s lll Semantics, DJCXL. B.o.B, a native of USA’s Atlanta, Georgia, came onto the scene in 2002. He was 14 and sold his first beat to recording artist Citti for the song ‘I’m The Cookie Man’. It wasn’t long before he was playing open mic nights and then sneaking into clubs and performing his self produced song ‘Cloud 9’. The ode to marijuana, that brought him to the attention of soon to be co-manager, producer and industry veteran, T.J. Chapman. The following month saw B.o.B sign to Atlantic records and begin his steady to rise to fame which would involve, the underground single ‘Haterz Everywhere’ which featured Wes Fif. The single then gained B.o.B recognition with a number 5 spot on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, hosted by Billboard. It was a self-proclaimed change in musical direction that then became one of the catalysts for his mainstream success and the adoption of the name Bobby Ray. It was his determination to become a free artist and avoid the grasps of the hands of genre that would then act almost as a prelude to both his debut album and to some of the collaborations he’d become famous for. It would be eight years before he released his debut album B.o.B Presents: The Adventures Of Bobby Ray, which would go on to sell 84,000 copies in it’s first week. As well as this, he’s already racked up an impressive list of accolades in a career that has only spanned a decade. From the super catchy and infectious duets with Paramore’s Hayley William’s to the Country - Pop artist Taylor Swift and his debut single featuring none other than Bruno Mars. It’s no wonder he’s landed two number one chart positions in the United States and a number one and
two in the United Kingdom as well as his debut album B.O.B Presents: The Adventures Of Bobby Ray reaching a gold certification. His second album, Strange Clouds was released earlier this year and has received positive reviews. With hip-hop magazine XXL awarding the album a 3.5 out of 5 starts and Rolling Stone magazine rewarding it a 3 out of 5. Within it’s first week of release Strange Clouds sold 74,105 copies, which blew away a projected sale amount of 70,000 and came off the back of the platinum single ‘Strange Clouds’. Reviews for the album have called it an expansion on the popular aesthetics of the new mainstream and Rolling Stone magazine said he shows off vast talent in his; guitar and piano playing. Two of the reasons that Strange Clouds has been labeled B.o.B’s redefinition of raps place in the music industry. On the record, he’s struck out on his own and by being at the helm, B.o.B has been able to make the kind of music he wants to make. The non-conformist, redefinition attitude is apparent in his choice of artists for collaboration. This time round, as well as the already popular single with Taylor Swift (‘Both Of Us’) the album’s title track is also a collaboration with rapper Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj as well as One Republic’s Ryan Tedder as one of the producer talents behind the record. As for Jan 16 concert at Logan Campbell there will be much much more than B.o.B. This is a line-up that we don’t often get in New Zealand, a healthy dose of NZ artists before the international superstar. And this concert, refreshingly, is exactly that. Alongside the Titanium and DJCXL are Pop starlet Brooke Duff, the voice behind ‘Till The End’, as well as smooth Hip Hop/ R&B artist J Williams and, K. One. Both artists are returning from overseas to refine brand new material PLAY. WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY SEE HIM LIVE: B.O.B WED 16 JAN LOGAN CAMPBELL CENTRE, AUCKLAND

ON THE ROAD AGAIN PARKWAY DRIVE IS HEADING IN A NEW DIRECTION, BUT DON’ T BE ALARMED – FRONT MAN WINSTON MCCALL ASSURES US IT’S THE SAME OLD BAND UNDERNEATH.
“It wasn’t so much a hard act to follow as it was an inspiration to create this record,” says Parkway Drive front man Winston McCall on writing the follow-up to their breakthrough album Deep Blue. “It [Deep Blue] gave us a confidence that we didn’t have before.” And thus the bone crunching, classical guitar inspired Atlas was birthed. McCall says the album was “massively” influenced by the music they listen to outside of Parkway Drive (“We don’t listen to heavy music in our free time”). The diversity in the band’s listening has led to the album being “more melodic especially on guitar. It isn’t straight up soft, but the melodies weaved into the songs are different to what we’ve done,” says McCall. Core elements of Atlas are something the band hasn’t taken away from their sound. “It sounds like a Parkway record,” he says. “We don’t take away but build upon what we have.” Building on their sound has created a mammoth record with a “different vibe”, though McCall also says, “If you step back from it, then you realise that it is something we haven’t done before.” “There are elements we haven’t used before and they are different. There is also that familiarity where you know it’s Parkway.” Atlas is a definitive step forward in Parkway Drive’s evolution. McCall says his lyrics are also more direct and that if you read the lyrics to Atlas after watching Home Is For The Heartless (the band’s DVD), it becomes clearer. “A lot of it (Atlas) was written when we were on the Home Is For The Heartless tour. We expanded musically and the experience expanded our horizons.” McCall says the lyrics on this album are more confrontational than anything the band has done before. “They were good experiences and we saw more of how the world works, and got different aspects of how we affect the world. If you listen to the album and read the lyrics, then out know what I’m trying to tell you. It is more blunt than previous records.”
from two songs. “We started with two songs, ‘Atlas’ and ‘Old Ghost’, which are really different, and we structured the rest of the record around those songs.” With that said, when it comes to what make Parkway Drive stand out from the crowd musically, McCall says, “musically, I don’t know”. It may then be the band’s level headedness and that, even after playing a show every day on the Deep Blue tour, they haven’t fallen out of touch. “Personally, I think we’re in a time where people go to further and further lengths to show they aren’t ordinary.” “We endeavor to be ordinary people and to understand that we’re ordinary people that play music in extraordinary circumstances. We know we’re lucky and we try to be band that’s relatable, we’ve always wanted to be relatable.” As well as the release of Atlas, Parkway Drive is heading to our shores in December where we’ll hopefully see their new live show, but McCall assures me it’s “nothing massive” saying “for 10 years we’ve been five guys playing on stage and we like that”. “We aren’t going to stand there and do nothing. We’re not taking away from it. We want to add more visual aspects; to make the harder points hit hard and the softer points hit more of a note.” Parkway Drive’s set list can also be expected to continue to be a mix of all their records. “We’re not a band that forgets the older stuff. It’s always going to be mixed and it is a bit of a struggle to put together a set list from four full length albums and lots of EPs.” They’re “waiting for some songs to die”, but still enjoy playing them all. “We’ll go out and [introduce a song] and the crowd will scream and you think to yourself, ‘You guys have been loving these for the last seven years’.” WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY
On writing the record, he says they approached it similarly to the way they have approached the other records in that, “musical progression comes from experience”. The final structure of the record, however, grew

Hitman has always been a stealth oriented action adventure. But it’s immediately obvious that, this time around, Agent 47 is letting his emotions get the better of him. The last few iterations in the Hitman series have hinted at the man behind the mask. But Absolution gives Agent 47 the chance to save an innocent, and in the process, perhaps absolve himself.

Series fans aren’t used to Agent 47 having feelings, and we certainly aren’t used to him giving in to them. His role is to ruthlessly and efficiently follow orders. The shift is a little jarring. The backdrop for the story also feels a little alien. Agent 47 and “the agency” are feared internationally, and previous titles have roamed the globe. However, Absolution is firmly rooted in the United States. The style and storyline reminded me of a half-baked Tarantino film — a stylised splatter fest lacking suspense or killer dialogue. Some parts work extremely well. Agent 47’s signature assassinations are satisfying and well thought out. The addition of user challenges is novel and means that singleplayer side missions are always changing, providing replayability value. The soundtrack is passable, but it’s a shame that developers weren’t able to involve Jesper Kydd whose scores are synonymous with the franchise. But there are also some things that don’t quite work. For those gamers who like to go in guns blazing, the shooting mechanic is clunky and unresponsive. The voice acting is grating and the script is rote. There is also not much variety in the style and types of weapons available. What really lets the gameplay down is the lack of pace and the introduction of cinematic fluff. For example, early on Agent 47 must run through a burning building, after being ignominiously captured. Later in the game, he must retrieve his signature silverballers by beating a cowgirl in a shooting contest. This trivialisation of the Hitman myth undermines the legacy. Hitman: Absolution falls short of the mark because it’s trying too hard to be something it isn’t. Hopefully next time IO Interactive lets Agent 47 get back to basics. And that’s not saving damsels in distress, running from the cops, or fighting “sexy nuns”. It’s killing people — cleanly, quietly, and without any unnecessary fuss. WRITTEN BY CONRAD REYNERS
STILL ROLLING ALONG THE AMERICAN PUNK ROCKERS LAGWAGON ARE FEELING ‘INSANELY POSITIVE’ ABOUT THEIR LATEST RELEASE.
I caught up with Lagwagon’s front man Joey Cape over a dodgy phone to talk about their latest release, a box set collection, the writing process, new material and the state of the band – which Cape described as a group of “old, broken down men who are invigorated and inspired by the old, good, music we wrote together”. He says that following the production of their box set, the band is “really on right now. Sometimes it takes years to feel connected and last year is one of the best years we’ve had”.
has is material Lagwagon rejected. “Writing for Lagwagon is the most difficult job ever. I can’t write without dying for it.”
The reception of the box set has been “insanely positive” says Cape, and without the smallest hint of arrogance in his voice, he continues to say, “and it should be”.
Lagwagon’s discography is fairly impressive and while it looks as though it will keep growing, Cape says there are some songs in the collection and current set list that he no longer believes in.
“We worked hard on it for three years. It took forever to remix the old stuff, which we didn’t even have mixers for.” The box set is a reflection on the band’s career and how they’re feeling after having a strong 2011 – “we worked intensely to maintain the integrity. It couldn’t be any better from the material we’ve got”.
“We’ve been playing all the old songs off the first five records…some of them might seem a little irrelevant because of the age.” As for the songs where he no longer shares the sentiment, he still views them as important to Lagwagon. “There are some I don’t agree with 100%, but you’ve just got to take it as a point in time, it was the band’s identity. There isn’t anything particularly shameful.”
Along with the box set, Cape says he’s been writing new material, but it has been very little. “We’ve [the band] been discussing it and we’re going to start working again in January and get into a room and figure out what to do.” With all of the band’s material he says that they “make records we’re all proud of [and that] we came closet to that with the last E.P”. On the Lagwagon writing process, he doesn’t want to fake it, and that it “depends on how inspired I am”. “When I have to write a song, I don’t have a choice. If I get an idea, I’ve got to find chords for it. Lyrics come later and are a whole other battle, they aren’t mutually exclusive.” He also says that a lot of the material that features in the other bands he
All of this and Cape says that not being influenced by the music they listen to is just doing “what comes naturally and over the years you fine tune it and perfect it”. While he adds that “it isn’t perfect”, Cape believes you come closer to it by just letting things happen and having the confidence to do that.
In regards to Lagwagon’s future, Cape assured me that “we’ll keep going until the wheels fall off”. WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY SEE THEM LIVE: PARKWAY DRIVE WED 12 DEC LOGAN CAMPBELL CENTRE, AUCKLAND THU 13 DEC THE KINGS ARMS, AUCKLAND

Deep Dive Go beneath the surface to disocver the eclectic sound of Australia’s Deep Sea Arcade.
Ok. First thing’s first. Deep Sea Arcade is from Sydney, not Madchester or the mid ‘90s Summer of Love (UK). Their band name should not be confused with a Brian Eno album. And whilst paying homage to “experimental cinema and the dystopian sci-fi films of the ‘60s” DSA owe their sound equally to bands like The Charlatans, Supergrass and a range of outfits they were probably too young to acknowledge, yet seem to have locked away in their tiny musical lockers. Chirpy and upbeat lead singer Nic Mackenzie is taking great delight in telling me he’s recently supported Tim Burgess’ band and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on recent tours down under. “That was really cool, you know. Supporting your idols, (yet) they’re real nice. Tim (Burgess) is real nice yet,” he draws a breath before continuing, ”mysterious. A guy I’d definitely like to know better.” Speaking of which, who are Deep Sea Arcade anyway? Sydney-raised Mackenzie and guitarist Nick Weaver were high school buddies in the mid-90s, slaving away on a huge catalogue of songs before “stealing’” musicians such as guitarist Tim Chamberlain, Simon Relf and drummer Carlos Adura from other midtown acts. Adura also moonlights for Tim Finn’s band and that, plus the production challenges and costs, meant DSA have had plenty of time to nurture their sound. Good fortune struck in 2008 when the band’s first single, ‘Crouch End’ struck pay dirt with big air on Aussie’s Triple J and was the leader on the subsequent EP Don’t Be Sorry. “That song’s about various relationships and this hell raiser I knew, who had all these amazing costumes. The house was in London’s Crouch End,” says MacKenzie.
By now MacKenzie was looking for subjects for his perky, upbeat but twisted little ditties. “The darker side always appeals. I have a kind of ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’ thing,” he offers, referring to The Beatles macabre little classic tune. Over time, the band picked up various local awards, before signing to Sydney label Ivy League Records and touring the UK and the festival circuit in Spain, where they supported acts like PJ Harvey and the Black Angels. When it was time to head into the studio, Mackenzie says they had very strong ideas about the sound they wanted. “We produced it ourselves, which gave us the control to create this cinematic atmosphere on all the songs.” I suggest the sound is a little like Cocteau Twins or School of Seven Bells. “In a way. We were influence by a stack of 80s and mid-90s bands. I wanted some surreptitious electronic undertones like Depeche or Talk Talk. We like The Charlatans, Noel and Liam, and grew up with Portishead and Radiohead. So introducing some of those flavours was natural to us.” 95bFM announce a few months ago that the band will be playing their Christmas party. This show will be one not to be missed.
