TRIM

In days of yore we've been called troubadours, minstrels of the road, jongleurs, jesters. Today we are CVE – A band of musical amigos hell-bent on sharing songs and making light, with a seemingly unquenchable thirst for quality wines and german shots. And there’s magic in this music. Tender moments of love and loss, songs of roads and ruin, good times had and ahead. Our brotherhood touches many and includes them all – it’s a bond we share and wear with pride. Some have come and gone, some have returned, others have yet to arrive at this holy place; this temple of Rock & Roll. It’s an honour to serve and to play, and we look forward to saddling up, treading the boards and sharing a jar every time with the anticipation of kids at Christmas. Reeeespect. This is CVE and It Is What It Is.

The most legendary family in music history is bringing their reunion show to New Zealand. Household names since the ‘70s, Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito Jackson returning to Australasia after nearly 30 years to perform all their hits and to pay special tribute to their late brother Michael. “This is a dream coming true,” said Jackie Jackson of the tour. “I can’t believe this is finally happening. There’s nothing like having all the brothers on stage at the same time. This will be exciting for our fans around the world-- and I know at each concert, MJ’s spirit will be in the house with us.”

Shit Worth Knowing

PLAYING ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE EDGE FAVourites STEP INTO THE UNUSUAL AND ALTERNATIVE WORLD OF THE AUCKLAND FRINGE FESTIVAL.

AARADHNA MUSICIAN

Fringe. The word typically describes something which lays on the outer, not part of the mainstream, something perhaps a little unconventional. Or, it can mean a swanky new hairstyle.

But from Fri 15 Feb to Sun to Mar the fringe becomes front and centre when the Auckland Fringe Festival takes over the little big city. Auckland Fringe is an open access arts festival, providing a platform for performers to present innovative work in an environment of artistic freedom. Public spaces – such as Silo Theatre and Aotea Square – will be taken over by cinema, theatre and dancing, and purpose-built areas (theatres, halls swimming pools) will house alternative content in all forms. Favourite drink? Jameson on ice. Favourite restaurant/café? Parade Cafe, Wellington. Favourite takeaway? KFC (don’t judge me lol). Favourite colour? Rainbow! Favourite classic film? The Goonies. Favourite childhood memory? Riding in the van with my parps and helping him with the paper run for the Dominion Post early in the mornings. He shared some awesome stories with me about him in his younger days, we used to sing along to Indian music that was playing on deck and had heaps of laughs. Favourite party food? Chicken-flavoured potato chips or carrots and dip. Favourite vice? Eating greasy food. Favourite song? Santo & Johnny – ‘Moonlight Serenade’. Favourite meal? My parps’ homemade lamb curry.

The purpose of fringe is simple: to enable audience access to eclectic art forms. The festival only comes once every two years, with shows running up to five days and venues seating around 100 people, so tickets really are strictly limited, with many guaranteed to sell out. There truly is everything you could think of: burlesque, comedy, arts, theatre, dancing, visual arts, music and even “other” – a category that labels everything that can’t be defined. So what kinds of things can you expect? Let’s look at some of acts. Russian stage show Nostalgia for Reality is a small group of highly-trained actors who are tutored under Stanislavski’s acting method. This piece dazzles with compelling monologues, exhilarating dance, heart-rending movement, beautiful music, puppetry, projections, humour and generous audience participation. Cannonball, direct from the 2012 Melbourne Fringe, catapults us into a world both suburban and extraordinary. A seasoned improviser, Emily Taylor, uses principles of improvisation when creating new

work and the show embraces spontaneity, truth in comedy and the audience/performer dynamic, creating an intimacy with the audience. Darkly revealing and disturbingly funny, 10 characters (all portrayed by Taylor) struggle with life, mortality and happiness. Here at home, Kiwi acts Puppet Fiction – the ultimate Quentin Tarantino homage on strings – and live-action cartoon Velcro City is guaranteed to inject some quirky humour into the festival. Using techniques beyond the human form (puppets, cartoons), the actors can do and say anything they damned well like! And to round out our picks is Wet Hot Beauties’ Swan Song – no, it’s not what you think, but in saying that, it kind of is. Bringing back the water ballet/synchronised swimming, these ladies will take over Parnell Baths to dance their fantastical Swan Lake/Baz Luhrmanninspired water ballet mash-up with their trademark cheeky, modern twist. With 24 days of action and adventure, don’t miss the bi-annual event of 2013. Plan ahead, get your tickets early and open your eyes to arts off the beaten track. ALL SHOW, TICKET AND VENUE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND AT AUCKLANDFRINGE.CO.NZ.

Favourite cause? Starship Foundation. Favourite label to put on your relationship? Hard loving. Favourite ‘90s TV show? Martin & The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Favourite word? Chunky. Favourite album? Back to Black – Amy Winehouse.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (PSASBR) is obviously the Sony equivalent of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. But whereas Nintendo has a large number of fun cartoony characters, Sony’s stable is filled with a lot of serious, technical, and often gun-wielding types. However, the balance that has been struck is remarkably good. For every Raiden there is a Sly Cooper. The characters from less violent games still have excellent attacks that are not out of step with their attitude. Sackboy, for example, uses stickers and objects from LittleBigPlanet’s creation menu as tools and weapons. Arcade mode gives each character a story play through. This can be odd, as characters like Kratos send themselves on quests to battle heroes and test their skills against the best, while Parappa the Rapper just wants to be a comic hero and somehow ends up fighting Helghast.

Transonic Negative Film Scanner Converts your 35mm film negatives and slides to a 5 megapixel digital image with push of a button.

The battle before the boss is where each character fights their opposite. Sometimes this is the perfect comedic foil - Jak and Daxter vs Ratchet and Clank - and sometimes it’s a bit more tangential - like Kratos vs Sweet Tooth.

Tournament offers up matched and unmatched games. You can invite friends to play or the system will just hook you up with randoms. Each “season” lasts about a month. So if you are only hitting your stride at the end, don’t worry. Oddly, online play isn’t as much fun as having other people in the room with you hurling trash talk back and forth (which can be done using Versus mode). The levels are fantastic. Each one is a mix of two different games. The Helghast invade Parappa’s dojo, while Nathan Drakes’ plane escape scene gets visited by the floating city from Bioshock Infinite. Throughout the levels there are hazards usually set up by the invading game’s characters. There are also pickups that players can equip to inflict damage on opponents and gain AP (the points you need to pull off special moves). The further through the game you get with each character you gain points to level up with. Each level unlocks more customisation options. These can be extra costumes, taunts, and intros but also icons and avatars for online play. Overall PSASBR is a fun little game that will give you hours of “just one more fight then so I can get even” entertainment. WRITTEN BY HADYN GREEN

All Grown up Music’s legendary Jackson family has announced a one off New Zealand show alongside a slew of Australian dates on their upcoming Unity tour.

The brothers, Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito, last toured outside of the United States almost 30 years ago on their Victory tour. The new tour has also come alongside a reunion with their old record label Motown. The freshly signed record deal will mean a new album next year. The brothers have also spoken of a Michael Jackson hologram as a possibility for the album’s tour cycle. The upcoming tour set list is part tribute to their brother Michael, who passed away in 2009, and will feature some of his greatest hits alongside the hits The Jacksons are most known for. Both bringing fans their greatest and most timeless hits and honouring their brother is paramount to the tour. With Jermaine Jackson saying he’s excited and happy to be playing again alongside his brothers, and that they’re all ready and committed to keep the Jackson family’s legacy alive. The legendary family formed in 1964, after the initially being a trio under the name of the Jackson Brothers. The trio consisted of the older siblings, and it wasn’t until the younger two came on board that they found success. Even with the soon-to-be King Of Pop (a pre-teen at the time) it would still be five years before they would burst onto the scene with their debut album. The Jacksons achieved international super-stardom when they were the first group in history to have all four of their singles reach #1 on the Billboard Charts. The group’s brand of pop-funk, which changed the face of music, has left them with a dynasty like no other. They’ve released a stunning 12 albums between 1969 through Motown (as the Jackson 5) and a further six as The Jacksons through a deal with Epic Records. Their debut album, Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5, sold

five million units and its follow up ABC exceeded this with 5.7 million copies. Solidly cementing them in the position of biggest selling family in music of all time. As well as having a back catalogue, which is nothing short of impressive, and the mind blowing record sales, the Jacksons legacy has gone beyond this. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1997, as well as career that has spanned four decades, the Jackson family revolutionized popular culture and music. Their sound has been described as ‘soulful and sunny’ and their live show has been known to match this with their contagious stage presence that earned them millions of fans across the world. Earlier in the year The Jacksons played at the Apollo theatre as part of the current tour. The Hollywood Reporter called it “slick…well paced… and energized the sold-out crowd.” While Eurweb.com, on said, “it was clear… they haven’t lost their stage presence, their dance moves, or their voices.” Only two of the many reviews that have hailed the return of the family and can only build anticipation for the New Zealand fans will have to wait until March before Unity is brought to our shores. In an interview about the tour Jackie Jackson said, “this is a dream coming true…I can’t believe this is finally happening. There’s nothing like having all the brothers on stage at the same time. I know at each concert, MJ’s spirit will be in the house with house.” WRITTEN BY SEBASTIAN MACKAY SEE THEM LIVE: THE JACKSONS TUE 26 MAR VECTOR ARENA, AUCKLAND

Wagons – they are a cool, somewhat dated method of transport. And what do they do best? Lag. ‘Cos they are slow. Get it? Let me quickly segway to the matter at hand which is the arrival of Lagwagon – US punk rockers – to our shores. Their career spans 25 years so prepare to lose your mind.

The glitch pop artist has struck a real chord with Kiwi fans, so much so the show is a sell out! Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, is all about using her creativity through both musical and visual, and draws on the arts of 2D, performance, dance, video and sound, weaving them all together to strong rhythmic effect.

The legendary musician, often credited as the man who patented indie music for the masses, is here to share his wit, guitar anthems and signature sorrow with Kiwi audiences. His sound has defined a musical path that many other bands have since travelled down. US singer/songwriter Kristeen Young joins Morrissey.

Highway is bringing their cinematic live music experience to Galatos this December. Playing their own compositions, the band’s sound is enhanced using projected imagery by their visual artist. Highway’s music is eclectic and traverses the classical, rock, blues, jazz and dance hall genres. It’s sure to be a night of mind-boggling sights and sounds.

TOUR

Pop-alt-rock might just be another made up sub-genre, but it was one that Garbage really made their own during the late 1990s. On The Absolute Collection, Shirley Manson and co give evidence that they might still be the only ones to pull off that tag with any real level of success. It is a do-over though, as the group’s career got a bad case of the big-time staggers post-2000 – a fact which was distinctly highlighted by their 2007 greatest hits compilation, Absolute Garbage. Perhaps that’s why Shirley, Butch, Duke and Steve decided to take another crack at things so soon, because releasing another greatest hits album, just five years since the last, could be viewed as something of a cynical move otherwise. But it was more-or-less a simple fix. The biggest mistake on Absolute Garbage was its track order – where it decided to go chronological and chart the group’s progression from start to (then) current day. Unfortunately, after you progressed past the halfway-mark, you were left with some patchy music that has lost a lot of the spark that made Garbage such a likeable band in their previous era. Absolute Collection smartens the fuck up though, by mixing eras and album tracks around so the best stuff isn’t loaded on the front and weighing the compilation down as a whole. Things kick off with ‘Cheery Lips (Go Baby Go!)’ off 2001’s Beautiful Garbage. It’s a light, but energetic start, with a song that emphasised

Garbage’s pop leanings and perhaps signified the start of their move away from that bread-and-butter, darker material that made them such a household name in the first place. Following straight after is one of the biggies, ‘Stupid Girl,’ which broke the group to a wider stratosphere of audience back in ’96. The song has dated, although its hollow-sounding chorus still sticks in your head with alarming ease. Absolute Collection’s middle contains a few of the weaker tracks on the album. ‘Big Bright World’ isn’t Garbage at their best and ‘Why Do You Love Me?’ sounds like a stupid, girly version of… well, ‘Stupid Girl’. But when Garbage is strong, they are very strong indeed. ‘Supervixen,’ ‘Milk,’ ‘#1 Crush,’ ‘Only Happy When It Rains’ and ‘Special’ all show off the bands best, addictive-as-sugar qualities. And then there’s ‘Vow’ – Garbage’s greatest single and as powerful a vengeance-espousing statement as you will find in music. WRITTEN BY DARREN MASLIN

TSB BANK ARENA

Where can your stalkers find you during the weekend? Singing at wealthy Australian’s weddings.

8PM, $90-130, TICKETEK.CO.NZ

What happens when you mix Coca Cola with Pepsi?
Eroded baby teeth - didn’t everyone do that science project at Primary School?

The foul-mouthed, sex-crazed, ex-drug addled comedian that everyone loves (except Katy Perry fans) has extended his tour and his last stop in our fair country before he departs is the capital. His I Am A Walrus tour is, a laugh-a-minute show, packed full of the crude, lewd and down-right dirty.

Your fantasy spirit animal is…
I like ducks. That’s not very fantasy or spiritual is it...

Your signature “I’m an amazing cook” dish is…
I call it ‘Hot Pot’ and make it at least once a week. Lots of veges, beans & a tin of tomatoes. Cook, serve with cheese. Nothing I cook looks pretty but it tastes good, and no ones complained yet.

MEGACHRISTMAS THE BASEMENT

8PM, $30-35, ITICKET.CO.NZ

With more Shortland Street stars, MPs and personalities than you can shake a stick at, The Basement prepares for Christmas with a wonderful pantomime of epic proportions. It’s a search for Santa as the night before Christmas the big man himself is missing and it’s up to you (and the celebs) to find him!

FRIDAY 14 A CHRISTMAS CAROL CIRCA THEATRE 7.30PM, $25-46, CIRCA.CO.NZ SEASON: WED 05 DEC – SAT 22 DEC

A one-man show by Ray Henwood tells the classic tale of the nasty Scrooge who goes up against the goodwill and joy that is synonymous with the festive holiday. It’s a story that is part of Christmas tradition and is all about using your moral compass to know what’s right and wrong.

Who’s in the dead supergroup for your dream hologram show? When it comes to gigs I’ve ticked two off my holy trinity - Bjork & Radiohead - now I just wanna see Daft Punk who might as well be dead they’re about that hard to see, and will probably do their next tour via hologram anyway. What’s an upcoming film you’re jazzed about? I think I need to go back before I go forward. There are so many old movies I need to catch up on.

The best TV show around at the moment is…
I don’t watch Glee but I just discovered Smash! Fed the musical theatre geek inside me. Also Girls. Living in Fitzroy in Melbourne is like one long episode of Girls. The best place for a date night is…
At present it’s Skype, unfortunately. People say you look like…

MONDAY 17 STEPHEN MERCHANT OPERA HOUSE

MERRY GISHMAS 8PM, $70, TICKETEK.CO.NZ

ROSE & THISTLE TAVERN

Once known as Ricky Gervais’ sidekick, Stephen Merchant is actually a ridiculously funny comedian in his own right. His show, Hello Ladies, is a selfdeprecating look at his journey to meet women and his struggle with singledom. His quiet charm will catch you off-guard and have you laughing your ass off.

TAURANGA, 8PM, $30-35, ITICKET.CO.NZ SEASON: WED 12 DEC – SAT 22 DEC

Gish is one of the most popular comedians on the New Zealand pro-comedy circuit. While everyone else is tied up with 7 Days live and Megachristmas, Gish is in the sunny Bay of Plenty, with a wicked combination of original and popular song parodies and a healthy toke of comedy for the bros.

FILM OF THE WEEK

THURSDAY 13 THREESOME – SEASON ONE

YOU’VE BEEN TRUMPED

TV ONE, 9.30PM

It’s a raunchy new show coming to TV One (who said it was only for old people?). When Alice starts to freak out on the eve of her 30th birthday, she’s determined to prove she’s not getting boring. However, her solution radically changes the lives of Alice, her boyfriend Mitch, and their gay best friend Ritchie.

directed by ANTHONY BAXTER Starring MICHAEL FORBES AND DONALD TRUMP

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY GENERAL RELEASE, 169 minutes

The wait is finally over fans – the hotly-anticipated three-part epic begins. Shot at a phenomenal 48-frames-per-second, the flick has attracted mixed reviews from overseas, with some whining about the new technology (like 3D all over again).

SATURDAY 15 JAMIE’S 15 MINUTE MEALS TV 3, 7PM

It’s official: Jamie Oliver is a cooking god. He knows what the people want and that is fast, healthy meals that can be done in 15 minutes. Jamie Oliver pushes the concept of fast, everyday food to the next level by preparing two, family meals back-to-back.

It’s not hard to vilify Donald Trump. It’s a feat easily achieved by exposing moments of his wealth-infused arrogance and complementing them with the odd close-up of his seemingly soulless pupils. You’ve Been Trumped jumps all over this opportunity, though it never forgets its key objective (even if it is edited like an episode of America’s Most Wanted). Backed by the Scottish government, Trump attempts to build a potentially profitable golfing resort over environmentally sensitive stretches of coast, a unique landscape cemented in the town’s history. Thus, the townsfolk-turnedenvironmentalists rally with farmer/ fisherman Michael Forbes, a lifelong resident who refuses to sell his land to the tycoon. So begins the battle of perspectives: the locals value their wilderness as “Amazonian” while Trump sees it as “swamplands”, their farms and homes are “slums”, their local hero Forbes is “the village idiot”.

Not intent on completely playing off Trump’s “rich douchewad” stigma, the filmmakers effectively convince you of the deceptive beauty in the naturally formed lands. It’s hard not to feel that Inside Job anger hearing Trump’s deliberately tainted and agenda-fuelled viewpoint on the environment he wishes to roll over. Seeing the flatten remains of the once-preserved sand dunes is akin to seeing a field full of dead tree stumps and billboards for The Apprentice. Without the aid of a narrator, You’ve Been Trumped places its audience in the witness chair. It’s this raw technique that has you feeling the townsfolk’s pride, determination and helplessness. Going into this film guarantees one thing: you will be provoked. WRITTEN BY LIAM MAGUREN FLICKS.CO.NZ

Let Me Kiss You

As lead singer of the iconic 80’s indie band The Smiths, Morrissey’s theatrical crooning and intelligent, poetic lyrics spray painted Thatcherite Britain’s walls on consciousness with romantic angst, social alienation - all delivered with and razor wit. Early tracks like ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’ and ‘Bigmouth Strikes again’ were sung sweetly but played off the clumsy, bumblings of a youthful teen against the desire to be sensitive but truthful. The songs were always homage to the car crash of juvenile articulation. Their music connected powerfully with many similarly sensitive, disaffected youth. They were the original emo’s, without the make up, but still pretty enough to make the girls swoon. But as much as his fans revered him, Morrissey was also criticised, often harshly for his self-absorption and determinedly miserable outlook. Stephen Patrick Morrissey (May 22, 1959) was born a Manchester lad. Not surprisingly shy, awkward and obsessed with music and film as a teenager. He devoted his writing talents to a New York Dolls fanzine (he was president of their U.K. fan club), wrote tributes to James Dean and wrote numerous opinionated letters to the weekly music paper Melody Maker. The Smiths’ 1983 debut single, ‘Hand in Glove’, was a love song with oblique references to homosexuality. It became an underground sensation. As time went on Morrissey demonstrated a flair for manipulating the media with interviews filled with blunt and unpredictable opinions. He intended to be outrageous. He knew notoriety wouldn’t hurt his stage presence. He even proclaimed celibacy in the wake of much speculation about his sexuality just to tease. The Smiths’ eponymous 1984 debut was a smash in the U.K. He began promoting his political views, slating Margaret Thatcher (The Queen Is Dead), advocating vegetarianism (Meat Is Murder). But long term frictions

between Morrissey and Marr continued to grown despite commercial success and Marr left the band after 1987’s Strangeways, Here We Come, with the band breaking up shortly after. A misperceived flirtation with British nationalism and ionic but poorly placed racial caricatures further tarnished his image. Frequent reports of feuds with his managers, business associates, and ex-bandmates all built the bonfire of contempt. Sellout tours Stateside renewed confidence and he permanently moved to Los Angeles, Morrissey delivered an equally strong follow-up in 1994 with the more mature Vauxhall and I, which placed his first Top 50 US singles-chart, A compilation The World of Morrissey, followed in 1995. Then a label change from Siren to RCA, for the first time since the Smiths’ debut album. Also issued in 1995 was the prog rock-informed Southpaw Grammar which utterly confounded many, prevented him from expanding his American audience. Yet despite all this Morrissey has remained a massively popular touring gig on the strength of a singular identity. Having him back on our stages is inviting trouble, we hope! Joining Morrissey on tour will be American singer/songwriter Kristeen Young. The talented performer has been supporting Morrissey across his 2012 world tour. Young’s performances are marked by wildly emotional energy and mastering of the piano.
