Justin Timberlake, after a six-year musical hiatus, has released a new single and revealed details of his upcoming album. “This year is an exciting one for me,” he posted. “Back in June of last year, I quietly started working on what is now my next journey with that thing I love called music. The inspiration for this really came out of the blue, and to be honest, I didn’t expect anything out of it. I just went into the studio and started playing around with some sounds and songs.”

The Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence not only looked stunning in a floor-length red number, but proved her acting chops far beyond her years, taking her first win for Silver Linings Playbook. Up against some tough (and older) competition, including the formidable Meryl Streep, Jen will be the one to watch for the Oscars night and may well be the future darling of Hollywood.

When it came to the small screen, Claire Danes (and also a new mum – how she looks like that, we will never know) once again took the award for her gripping performance in the extremely successful Homeland. Popular, but perhaps controversial winner for her lack of clean-cut material, Lena Dunham won the best actress award for a musical or comedy against the night’s hosts.
Favourite drink? Bourbon and Coke. Embarrassing, I know. Favourite classic film? Is Ghostbusters a “classic”? Favourite childhood memory? Waking up and going into the lounge late at night to find my dad and his best friend drinking and smoking and listening to jazz records. I was allowed to sit on dad’s knee for a while and listen along with them. Favourite party food? Tequila? Tequila and salt & vinegar chips? I don’t eat much at parties. I’m too busy entertaining the masses with my dancing. I’m a great dancer. At least that’s what I tell myself. Favourite song? Woah. That’s really tough. Today it’s ‘Just a Gigolo’ by Louis Prima. Favourite meal? You really want to know a lot about my eating habits. Are you a dietician/doctor? Favourite cause? I’ve never been much of a ‘Corrs’ fan. Favourite ‘90s TV show? Alf. Favourite word? I played there last year with Band of Horses. It’s beautiful and it’s Keith Richards’ favourite venue too. So there. THE 2013 GOLDEN GLOBES ARE OUT AND ALL BETS ARE ON FOR THE OSCAR WINNERS. Welcome the 2013 awards season. In lead-up to the Academy Awards or Oscars, sister show the Golden Globes has paved the way, highlighting the hot Oscar contenders and rewarding the hard work of TV shows across the board. Of course, no awards show would be complete without hosts with the most, and this year the ladies of laughter got their turn with Saturday Night Live comedy duo Amy Poehler and Tina Fey showing why they are just as good (if not better) than their male counterparts. Quips of the night included a reference to former Globes host Ricky Gervais, who caused a decent amount of controversy last year, with Amy saying, “We want to assure you that we have no intention of being edgy or offensive tonight because, as Ricky learned the hard way: When you run afoul of the Hollywood Foreign Press, they make you host the show two more times.” A shout out to the ladies of the audience, including former Academy Award-winner and nominee Kathryn Bigelow with Amy saying, “I haven’t really been following the controversy over Zero Dark Thirty, but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.” The room loved the one. But to the awards – it was a mixed, but predictable bag when it came to handing out the honours. The critically acclaimed adaptation of the award-winning musical Les Miserables was given the top dog award for Best Motion Picture for Musical or Comedy. It will no doubt go up against Best Motion Picture for Drama winner Argo for the 2013 Oscar win. Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway both did their part for Les Mis’ haul, as the critics’ favourites picked up a gong for male in the lead and female in supporting role. It was surprising perhaps that director Tom Hooper didn’t win for his part in the

I’m going out on a limb here, but hip hop artists totally get the best in the way of monikers. Featuring Mr. Mixxwell, Nutella Monk, Diamond Sutra and other suavely-titled cats, this gig is equal parts class and panache- all whilst strolling up the alley of familyfriendly fun. Bring a picnic basket and parasol to show them what a sophisticated lot you can be.
Minuit blow my mind. They’re a dance act true and through, a voltaic electronic team delivering soulfully unpretentious music. They consistently sit at the edge of the boundaries, in the cracks, somewhere between the mainstream and underground – but they’re neither really. Minuit just exist, not in the way a town like Shannon ‘just exists’ – no. While you’re just as likely to find someone who hasn’t heard of Minuit as Shannon there is a vast catchment of people from all stereotypes, nations and scenes who have encountered them. Maybe they stumbled across them or were there from the beginning. While either experience isn’t profoundly lifechanging Minuit convert you and stay with you. It could be singer Ruth Carr’s alluring sensuality or their transfixing sonorous outpour but there’s no denying the mutual understanding that develops after a Minuit taster. Countless EP’s, remixes and relentless worldly touring amalgamate into a little drop of near perfection. A grippingly relevant transfusion of Rarotonga inspired rhythmic ambience, soaring bass lines and an almost poetic lyrical underpinning this album showcases Minuit’s constantly innovative talent for getting music right. Title track ‘Last Night You Saw This Band’ is a softly spoken first song with a marching drumbeat and festive brass ensemble. Chorus lyric “last night you saw this band and you came running home to me,’ is a poignant re-introduction to Minuit in album form.
Lead track ‘Book Of The Dead’ has been in the public domain for months and it’s Power Ranger’esque music video has plenty of impassioned commentary on the you tube. It’s second on the album but first in the world and it thunders about with emphatic bass propensity and a simple chorus hook that creates a delightful musical infection. The album’s tropical underpinning creates a pulsating tempo that carries the album through a paradise of musical exploration. Album highlights are the escapist ‘Islands’ soaring with synth and guitar fused island beats it peaks relentlessly before mellowing into a softer aural valley with a child-like chorus group seeing the song into sinister sounding ‘What We Know’. ‘Good Ol’ Days’ is an understated track with a playfully vibey atmosphere. ‘Warheads’ is a topical love diddy with a smirk worthy line; “let’s settle it with bombs”. They’re not exactly hidden but they’re not in your face either and whether that contributes to the sentimental power of their music is up for argument, what isn’t though is that their music is great. The best TV show around at the moment is… BIG BANG THEORY! House is pretty good too, along with Chuck, Psych, etc., but The Big Bang Theory is an easy first. Oh, and I could hardly forget Game of Thrones!
The best place for a date night is… Well, there are lots of great places to go in Wellington, but wherever the date started, it would have to pass by Kaffee Eis at some point for some amazing gelato! People say you look like… ‘Shit’ is the response I received from my older brother, however I have also been likened to Sideshow Bob, Cleo Laine, and a tall Hobbit. I think I like the last one best – the likeness is due mainly to the fact that I walk around barefoot most of the time, and have similar hair. What generic current affair has your blood boiled? Marriage equality – enough discrimination, just pass the bill already! That and the ‘right to bear arms’ bullshit in the America. Few films in the past year have matched the narrative cunning of Bart Layton’s captivating true-crime documentary The Imposter. Perhaps only next to Craig Zobel’s Compliance in its ability to generate disbelieving cries of “oh COME on” from viewers (though the latter has a distancing layer of being completely dramatised), The Imposter’s scintillating, chillingly suspenseful account of how Frenchman Frédéric Bourdin passed himself off as the missing child of a Texan family will leave your jaw hanging at every turn. Alternating between slickly cinematic reenactments and standard talking heads, the doco benefits from having Bourdin on camera imparting his own story with fast-talking, cocky charisma that leaves no room for remorse. Like a true con-man, he reels us in immediately: from his sly, quickthinking deception of the police in
Spain all the way to San Antonio, where he bizarrely found himself accepted - despite speaking with a thick French accent and not looking a damn thing like him - as Nicholas Barclay, a boy who had been missing for 3 years. The Imposter is such deftly constructed storytelling that it’s easy to forget that at the very centre of this yarn is a family devastated by a devious crime. But the injection of an ambiguous third-act twist proves the film not only to be a psychologically astute study of identity and deception but also perception. Our doubts as to why Barclay’s family would take in an apparent stranger eventually morph into an acknowledgement that we’re all equally susceptible to believing anything in any given context. What was it like reteaming with Quentin Tarantino? Well, it wasn’t really reteaming because the team spirit stayed alive - it kind of bridged the gap between two movies. We were in constant contact anyway and as this script sort of inched its way into the world, I was allowed to take the occasional peek. I could follow what was happening… I take it he wrote this part for you? You’d really have to ask Quentin Tarantino, that…. But kind of, yeah, I guess (laughs)... That process helped me to kind of slowly, cautiously approach the thing, to think about it in portions and not the whole big brunt of a part, you know, wondering for a few weeks what will happen next. So it kind of drew me in gradually. I prefer that than being hit over the head with something. How did you prepare for the film – aside from growing that incredible beard? It was a very good beard. But growing beards is not really part of preparation. Well, maybe it is (laughs)… who knows? You know, I don’t really elaborate on what I do and how I do it all that much… There is so much myth about ‘the actor’s preparation,’ which is basically bullshit, because everybody just does whatever he can to get the ball rolling, the juices flowing, to start to understand what’s required. So that whole

sensational thing of ‘If I play an Indian I have to live in a teepee and skin beavers…’ Well, if you have to, fine. Nothing to be said against it. But there’s too much PR mileage taken from that. You know, you read the script and you switch your brain on. That’s what you basically do. I mean, that’s what I do. What was it like working with Jamie Foxx? You guys have great chemistry together. Somebody else mentioned this and I agree, absolutely. I mean, chemistry is really the science of how elements, like elements from The Periodic Table, are combined with each other in order to create something new... And that’s really how it was. Because, you know, we’re very different. Not just the background and the color of our skin, you know, but everything is very different, as it should be. The combination is what makes it. That’s why film is such a great medium. Because it’s really all about composition – putting together different things, putting together details, elements, materials, people, histories, melodies and rhythms... What was the biggest challenge making the film? For me, that it was a very, very long enterprise. So far I’ve spent about a year and a half with it. If you consider the promotional part of it, it will be two years. And I’ve never done that before. I never have done anything of this scale in terms of time.
What is about Quentin Tarantino’s films that audiences find so attractive? I don’t think there is such a thing as ‘an audience’… There is a wonderful example by C.G. Jung who says if you want to determine the average weight of a beach pebble, you take a hundred or a thousand, whatever representative number of pebbles, you weigh them, you divide it by 100 or 1000, and that kind of gives you a pretty precise approximation of the average pebble on that beach. The probability that you find a single pebble of that weight, however, is vanishingly small. Almost nonexistent. So I think this generalization of ‘an audience’… is very unfair to the individual who has a right to find a Tarantino movie for his own very personal reasons. I think that’s why people love these movies. Because he speaks to every single one of them individually. He doesn’t aim it at a target audience. He does not satisfy a market segment. That’s for the promoters or business people. He doesn’t share that perspective. He makes movies from his heart to the heart of the spectator. And that’s why people love it. And as an actor – what’s it like to be in one of his movies? It depends on what part you play and how you fit in. If it fits in, it’s bliss. And I’m sure if it [didn’t], it would be torture…
Was there a sense of pressure coming off Inglourious Basterds? Yes, definitely… Definitely. The pressure really was mostly that I didn’t want to repeat what we’ve done before. It’s a different story, different context, different time, different situation, different necessities – everything different. You know, why should we fall into that trap and repeat something, just because it was successful? Do you see your collaboration with Quentin Tarantino continuing in the future? In one way or another, definitely. Be it only over dinner... But will we get to see you in his next film? That, I don’t know… Because unless you’re inviting us to dinner… (Laughs)… I have no idea. You know, it’s one of these things where you say, if there’s a part for me, he will ask me. And if he doesn’t ask me, there was no part for me. So you know, everything’s cool. DJANGO UNCHAINED
How would you describe your relationship with Quentin? Is it strictly professional?

No, actually it’s more a personal friendship than professional. Which is a good thing, because in a way it separates the two fields. When I work with him, I work with him. When he’s the director, it’s his movie. He is different from any other director in the world and he’s probably more of an auteur than any of the other auteurs still alive. And so I completely concede that it is his movie… I’m just there to try to supply the best material for his edit.

After beginning his career playing in London’s punk rock scene in the 1970s, Elvis Costello is back in New Zealand for one special performance, showcasing his long career of hits with the help of a few special guests. The English singer-songwriter recorded his critically-acclaimed debut album My Aim Is True (released in 1977, following the single ‘Less Than Zero’). The album reached number 14 on the UK charts and later Top 40 in the US. When the soul-infused fourth album Get Happy!! dropped, it became Costello’s most successful experiment with genres (outside of those he was known for). Since then, Costello’s been called a “pop encyclopedia” for his ability to reinvent the past in his own image. His career has spanned an impressive three decades, which have arguably left him well known for his performances with The Attractions, The Imposters and concert experiences with Steve Nieve. The last 30 years have also produced a staggering discography for Elvis and his collaborators, with the first nine albums all released within one year of each other. A testament to Costello’s hard working ethic, which no doubt is part responsible for his continued success. As well as being an acclaimed musician, Costello has reached into other art forms. He’s written pieces for Vanity Fair magazine, and has appeared in nearly 20 films and TV shows – including a notable appearance on Sesame Street, performing alongside Elmo and Cookie Monster. Did we mention he also released his own book called A Singing Dictionary? This is all part of what’s been dubbed his “artistic significance”. Costello has not only championed the works of others in his articles, but he’s contributed to two Grateful Dead tribute albums and appeared
in documentaries about Dusty Springfield, Brian Wilson and Wanda Jackson among others. This landed him spot number 80 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. The 2000s have been just as impressive, with Costello becoming UCLA’s (University Of California Los Angeles) artist in residence, where he composed the music to a new ballet. He also released an album in 2002 titled When I Was Cruel on Island Records – the first album to feature Costello’s (at the time) new band, The Imposters, and spawned the hits ‘45’ and ‘15 Petals’. When he’s not working as a musician, Costello rallies for humanitarian causes, namely sitting in the advisory board for the Jazz Foundation of America. Through this, Costello has been able to save the lives and homes of some of America’s elderly jazz players. The musical icon won’t be alone at his Auckland show – he’ll be backed by his trust Imposters: Keyboardist Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas and bassist Davey Faragher –and they’ll be playing what’s been called a “refresher course”, with a selection of Costello’s hits. This will be the first time in 13 years that Costello has come to New Zealand and to welcome him back, the show has an impressive list of guests from Tim Finn, James Reyne (former frontman of Australian Crawl) and The Mutton Birds’ Don McGlashan. You step into the shoes of a “survivor”, someone who has yet to fall victim to the zombie outbreak that has plagued London. The double-edged sword for this situation comes in the form of item management. Did your previous survivor hoard the guns for himself or did he leave some behind in the safehouse? If he did the former then you’ll be heading out with a cricket bat, a pistol, and six bullets. If you manage to take out your previous self, you get to take back all the goodies you once had, but fail - and this is easier to do than you may think - and those items are lost for good. ZombiU is a genuinely tense title that sees you holding your breath and feeling insecure from start to finish. You won’t charge into a room, you’ll creep. You won’t walk up to a zombie with intent to kill, you’ll turn your flashlight off and hope it doesn’t see you. You won’t let off a round from your shotgun before scanning the area for more zombies, and you’ll probably stick to the silenced pistol instead of the brutal Magnum. The game is designed to make you fear what’s around the bend, it’s designed to feel like you’re controlling an average Joe in a nightmare situation, and it’s designed to be hard enough that you may consider changing to the “chicken” difficulty. ZombiU is a must-buy for gamers looking for something mature and difficult. You won’t beat survivor mode on your first play through, you’ll die a lot, and you’ll fear the dark more than in the majority of survival horrors released in the last generation of gaming. BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO A CULT GENRE, RESIDENT EVIL DIRECTOR PAUL W S ANDERSON TALKS ABOUT WHY HE’S BROUGHT THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BACK TO OUR SCREENS FOR A FIFTH (AND HOPEFULLY SIXTH) TIME There’s something ironic about talking to Resident Evil director Paul WS Anderson on Dec 21, 2012. With the Mayans predicting the end of the world – and some hypothesising death by zombie takeover – it seems fitting to discuss the subject with a man who has dedicated 10 years of his life to sharing the destructive force of the undead with cinema audiences. Unsurprisingly, the zombie fiend agreed it would be the most likely way to go and although he says his family – consisting of his lead actress Milla Jovovich and their five-year-old daughter – is “unprepared for the end of the world, his solution is to let his ass-kicking wife do all the hard work. “I feel kind of secure knowing that I can just hide behind Milla if it does start to break out,” he laughs. “She has really proved herself dealing with these kinds of things. Failing that, [2012 director] Roland Emmerich lives just up the hill from us, so with the combination of Rolland and Milla I will be perfectly safe.” English-born Paul relishes the chance to talk about a subject that many consider him to be an expert in. The Resident Evil saga, of which he has directed three and written all five, is the most successful film series based on video games, with the franchise bringing in US$876 million collectively worldwide. As somewhat of a gamer – his first big-budget flick was a movie adaptation of Mortal Kombat in 1995 – it’s the cinema allusions in the original games that drew him to the first Resident Evil project in 2002. “I played the [Resident Evil] video games, which were heavily influenced by movies that I grew up with – the George Romero movies and early John Carpenter flicks. It was a chance to reenergize the zombie genre. When I was a teenager, I used to watch a new zombie movie every couple of weeks, so when I played the first game, I thought no-one has made a zombie movie in 10 to 15 years and it was about time zombies came back.” The 47-year-old ended up, ironically, beating Romero for the chance to write and direct the initial blockbuster. In 1999, Romero signed up as director and writer, and created a story revolving around game character Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, but his script was ultimately dismissed.
Brought onboard by Sony, Paul stated at the time the film would not include any tie-ins with the game as “underperforming movie tie-ins are too common and Resident Evil, of all games, deserved a good celluloid representation”. Instead, he took bits and pieces here and there, bringing a new generation to the classic horror genre. “There is something very primal about the undead,” Paul says, when explaining the appeal of the genre. “It’s that fear of people you know coming back to life and trying to consume you. It’s scary when you’re being chased by something and that thing is remorseless. I think, like all good horrors, it taps into something basic and elemental.” Like his reanimated subject matter, Paul refused to let the project die while he was at the helm. To keep the saga fresh, each film would revolve around central elements from other genres, such as haunted house films, road movies, prison escapes and balls-to-the-wall blockbusters, in order to make the films more than just ‘another zombie flick’. It was also the reason why his latest and fifth film in the series, Resident Evil: Retribution, refrained from being filmed back-to-back with the sixth and final film in the series. “We have always approached them one at a time, using that gap to think things over. I think that’s the hallmark of these films. They are made by professionals who are passionate about what they do, they love their job and it felt like doing the two films back-to-back would make it a bind and I didn’t want to lose the magic I felt with the other films so we drew back from that idea.” He’s dedicated more than a decade of his life to this project and it is Paul’s undying drive for the genre to survive that has kept the cast and crew coming back for more. Although it may be a slow process, he’s relentless when it comes to what he wants and hopes to do it all over again one last time. “Another film?
