J.J. Abrams is jumping from one franchise to another. The Star Trek Into Darkness director is set to take the reigns for the next Star Wars film. “As a kid I was always a fan of special effects. Watching movies I was constantly trying to figure out how they did it, whatever the effect was. Star Wars was the first movie that blew my mind in that way; it didn’t matter how they did any of it because it was all so overwhelmingly and entirely great. It was funny and romantic and scary and compelling and the visual effects just served the characters and story. It has been revealed that Psy’s insanely annoying hit ‘Gangnam Style’ video has generated over $8 million in ad revenues via YouTube. The clip has broken YouTube records with the most ‘likes’ and the most watched video after going viral in 2012. The copyright owner of videos uploaded to YouTube gets 50 per cent of all revenue made through advertisements, which means that ‘Gangnam Style’ will have earned around $4 million.

On the edge of the Underworld
Karl Hyde of british indie / electronica band Underworld has given a sneak peak into his first solo project. The nine-track album “Edgeland” was inspired by the ‘hidden corners’ of the city he told NME. “The beauty of decay, tyre marks, crude graffiti, industrial noise, overheard conversations, epidemics of coffee bars and nights on the back seat being driven through cities by drivers who never sleep. A celebration of people’s idiosyncrasies, mapping out my journeys with the stories they tell, edgelands where city meets scrub, where ragged ponies grazed annexed fields and the air smells chemical.” The first single “Cut Clouds” is out now. “Edgeland” is due April 2013.

Look out Depeche Mode fans as the Essex band are back with brand new album “Delta Machine”. The group’s Martin Gore said, “Writing this album was incredibly daunting as I wanted the sound of this collection to be very modern. Lance Armstrong may not be the toast of the sporting world with his admittance of taking performance enhancing drugs but that hasn’t dulled interest from reality TV show “Dancing With The Stars”. Sources say the reality hit offered the former professional cyclist a spot on the upcoming spring edition of the veteran reality series. Armstrong’s spokesperson said “Lance has been offered the show each and every year since its inception. Although flattered he has passed on their generous offers.” The news comes off the back of Lindsay Lohan declining a US $550,000 offer to appear this year.

The biggest event in Americas sporting calendar NFL’s Superbowl takes place on February 3 (February 4 NZ Time) and apart from whether Beyonce will lip sync again, the hottest off field action comes courtesy of advertisers biggest players. Volkswagen, Coke, Mercedes Benz, Doritas, Hyundai, amongst many others have bought up ad space. Anheuser-Busch InBev, Budweiser’s parent company, has bought 4.5 minutes of Super Bowl advertising space which includes the first commercial of the game. Performances at the 2013 Grammy Awards ceremony have been announced. Sir Elton John and Ed Sheeran will perform together at the awards in LA next month. As well as Elton and Ed teaming up, Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley will be doing the same on the big night. Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Jack White and The Black Keys have also confirmed they’ll be performing at the Grammy ceremony, which will be hosted by rapper/actor LL Cool J.

PLAYING LADI6 ON WAITANGI DAY FAVourites YINGDI SUN PIANIST
Maybe it’s because by February the weather has come right in Wellington, but in general, Wellingtonians are pretty good at celebrating Waitangi Day. They don’t just treat it as a day off, they actually get out there and celebrate it, usually at events that are held around the region. This year residents of the Capital are in for a big gig treat, Ladi6 will be performing on Wellington’s Waterfront for free. Event organiser Rebecca Hardie says they are pleased to get such a big drawcard act.
“We expect people from the Hutt, from Porirua, from all over the Wellington region. We wanted someone who was well known, particularly with younger audiences, so they would come down and make a conscious effort to be part of Waitangi Day.” Ladi6 performs at 4.45pm as part of an all day celebration of Waitangi Day put on by Wellington City Council. It all kicks off at 10am at the Atea (front) of the Wharewaka building on Wellington’s Waterfront. “There’ll be plenty of activities for the kids in the morning – storytelling, they can make a waka from harakeke and get some tats, well, airbrushed tattoos.”
Favourite drink? Chinese Pu’er tea. Favourite restaurant/café? Any Chinese cuisine, such as sasami (a Japanese cuisine in Shanghai). Favourite colour? Blue. Favourite classic film? Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption.
Then around noon waka will paddle out into the harbour where they’ll do a salute to public at the Wharewaka to start the formal proceedings. It’ll be pretty spectacular to watch.” Although Ladi6 is the major musical drawcard of the day, there’s plenty of entertainment throughout the afternoon, including three kapa haka groups, an aboriginal choir and The DCM Ukelele crew. These guys are part of the city’s homelessness strategy and they play ukuleles. They’re going to literally sing for their supper. “There are about 10 players in the group and this will be the second time they’ve performed in public. For performing we’re going to give them a bit of kai for their lunch.”
Wellington singer song-writer, Toni Huata takes the stage at around 3pm. She’ll be playing songs from her fourth album, Hupukia, which debuted on the charts at number seven when it was released last year. Then local reggae act Tomorrow People will be warming up the crowd with a taste of their original reggae riffs. The band have gained quite a following, especially online, since the release of their debut album One. Ladi6 is the big act of the day, starting around 4.30pm but it doesn’t finish there. After her performance learn to salsa with Salsa at Sunset or bring a cushion to Waitangi Park for the public screening of Taika Waititi’s award-winning film Boy (M), at 8.30pm. “Lots of New Zealanders love it, they can relate to it, everyone quotes it and Taika Waititi is a born and bred Wellingtonian. So we’re thrilled to be playing his slice of kiwiana to end the city’s celebration of our national day.”

Ben Harper’s latest album, Get Up!, is a collaboration with blues stalwart / harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite. The 10 songs on this record inhabit the common ground found between the two – more soulful than Musselwhite and more stripped back than Harper’s regular fare. The overall sound is very throwback. ‘I’m In I’m Out and I’m Gone’, heavy on honky tonk groove, or ‘Blood Side Up’ could have been the product of Muddy Waters or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Everything smacks of authenticity. Slower numbers such as ‘I Ride At Dawn’ take strong cues from the classic Louisiana swamp sound. The album might come across as a
vanity project for Harper, but with his talents at work that is not a bad thing. Modern blues is so hit-and-miss that you should appreciate every sure thing that comes your way and Get Up! hits all the right notes. WRITTEN BY RICARDO KERR

A$AP ROCKY LONG.LIVE.A$AP A$AP Rocky’s debut album Long. Live.A$AP grabs you from the very beginning. His voice is unique and engaging. Switching between energetic direct rap and a deeper distorted chorus hook, A$AP Rocky establishes a signature sound from the start. While this is super effective, tracks featuring other artists help break up the stylised album. I was surprised to find myself actually enjoying ‘Wild for the Night’ which features and is produced by Skrillex. ‘I Come Apart’, featuring Florence Welch, is easily my favourite track. The softness of her voice compliments A$AP Rocky’s tougher, more hard-hitting sound. This track closes the album perfectly. It is clear
where A$AP Rocky’s ideas were born, in particular the track ‘Pain’ sounds like it could be straight off Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3. While A$AP Rocky’s influences are easily recognisable, the album is very good and should see him well established in the modern rap scene. WRITTEN BY ZOE FITZPATRICK

It’s been less than a decade since the Boxing Day tsunami that took more than 230,000 lives in South East Asia. Reliving it at the movies seems, initially, tasteless. How could a piece of entertainment possibly do justice to such a horrific event? But The Impossible rises to the occasion in what must be the most powerful, harrowing and moving disaster film ever made. Zeroing in on one family’s true-life horror, it spares the audience little of their grisly despair, to the point where viewers will find themselves on the verge of trauma as the war-like aftermath unfolds. Not many films have the ability to shock these days but perhaps because Kiwis are no more impervious to natural disasters than anyone else, The Impossible strikes a nerve. Much of this is down to the impressive production: coastal Thai villages are wiped out, (miniatures were destroyed, not that you’d realise it), aerial shots show the mass devastation, and underwater footage recreates the turmoil of bodies colliding with debris. It is also largely to
the credit of Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), and scriptwriters Sergio G Sanchez and Maria Belon, whose raw, nonsentimental handling of the story leaves the emoting to the music. They communicate a sense of both the epic scale of the disaster and intimacy during the characters’ isolated moments. Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland, along with youngsters Samuel Joslin and Oaklee Pendergast, play the family on which the story is based and are all masterfully genuine in their anguish. It’s often so horrific it’s almost impossible to watch, and you may find yourself wondering why you are. But Bayona also lends it a sense of grace, making the film, in equal measure, upsetting and uplifting, hellish and heartwarming. Its effects will linger long after you leave the theatre. BRITISH COMEDIAN ALAN DAVIES EXPLAINS WHY LIFE IS PAIN IS THE APT TITLE OF HIS FIRST STANDUP SHOW IN 13 YEARS. Life is pain. It’s a cynical sentiment, a bleak outlook on the world, and as someone who has experienced their fair share, a fitting title for the new stand-up show by British comedian Alan Davies. But in true Davies style, the 46-year-old admits it is very tongue in cheek.
Finding material for his new show has been relatively straight forward – like any comedian taking notes on conversations and anecdotes that make him laugh are essential. It also requires drawing on life experiences and as the title suggests, it’s not without a few honest confessions.
“It comes from an anecdote where a six-year-old girl said that to her mother when she was being told off. She looked up at her and said, ‘Life is pain’, and I thought it was so funny. It started out as an idea for material and it ended up being the title of the show.”
Losing his mother at age six to leukemia (she was 38) has been something that has weighted heavily on his mind, with Alan saying, “I think about her every single day”. Now he is in his forties, he admits enough time has gone by that talking openly about her passing seems fitting in his latest show.
Known for his iconic role on the murder-mystery TV series Jonathan Creek and regular spot on quiz show QI, Alan has a long and illustrious career as a regular face on the BBC. But while stand-up comedy was his first love, starting the circuit in 1988, it has been on a hiatus since about 1998 as Alan’s workload increased. Life is Pain marks a welcome return to the stage for the star, although it wasn’t without some reservations. “I have found it difficult at first, actually. But I did some Australian shows in 2011 after doing QI Live with Stephen [Fry] and that went really well, I found my feet again. I thought I might have to fall back on my material from the 1990s, but in the end it came together and I ended up taking it to the UK.” Frequently portrayed on QI as the bumbling idiot – Alan admits it took him three years to realise he was being pegged as “Britain’s favourite dunce in the corner” – he says people might find his stand-up a “bit of an eye opener” if that was the only role they had seen him in. After 10 years as part of the lively panel show, he says it’s been a lot of fun (and looks forward to heading into its 11th year), but returning to stand-up is “nice to go out there on my own”.
That said, the light-hearted gent is also talking about a mix of social networking faux pas (something he is guilty of), changing nappies (he has two young children) and the end of the world (always a popular subject). While on his Kiwi tour, fans can expect to catch Alan in nearly every city in the country. They can also catch him at a few cricket matches, cheering from the stands (although unfortunately not for us). On hearing the England team was playing a Twenty20 International match in New Zealand, the comedian rearranged his tour dates and added a new one in Whangarei. The somewhat flippant sports fan – it has previously been reported that Alan is a fan of Arsenal FC because his “brother was a Spurs fan and he didn’t want to be the same” – he says the same of cricket, admitting it is the “only thing I can get to [on my days off]”. Still outwardly glowing from the adrenaline rush of becoming a father again, master horn man Toby Laing is shrugging off domestic duties to chat about touring down under and a long awaited new Fat Freddy’s Drop album. Two and a half weeks ago, the only baby in Laing’s sights was the immanent and hopeful arrival of a little girl, his second child. Now that’s all done, he’s ready to talk about the new tracks. “We’ve been recording at a downtown Kilbirnie studio, gives everything an ‘East-suburban feel’, you know?” he dryly quips. Back in the country after a gruelling European summer festival circuit, Fat Freddy’s have found time to re-establish the roots of their various family and musical trees back in the capital.
“We don’t just want to do a paired down show. We need to have all the equipment and band members and that requires a big support team. That’s one of the reasons why we do the overseas festivals because they work for us.” One of their more interesting recent gigs was in East Poland, where they headlined a 100,000-plus reggae festival featuring many Jamaican roots acts. It took over 40 hours in the bus from the UK to get there, taking turns to drive and navigate. Then, after arriving with minutes to spare before showtime, the gig was halted for nearly two hours while the crew and organisers were presented with certificates and tokens of appreciation.
“It’s called Blackbird and like the previous ones it’ll have a narrative running through it, but you’ll have to wait and see. I’m giving that away!”
“It’s the first time a gig has been delayed for a prize giving for the crew!” he exclaims. And so they should.
The first single ‘Silver and Gold’ definitely has the collective funk of their big live sound, “which is because we still wanted it to feel like a great jam, like ‘Wandering Eye’ or ‘The Nod’, which are more dance orientated”.

The gig was supplemented by Otis Frizzell, who whipped up a live piece of graffiti art on a 2m-high canvas during the show. Of course, Frizzell has been central to the Freddy’s ‘look’ for years, designing covers and posters. The partnership goes way back to when Mark Williams aka

This summer, Freddy’s will lead out Anika Moa, Boa Runga, Hollie Smith and The Adults (Jon Toogood, Julia Deans, Shayne Carter) on the nationwide Classic Hits Winery Tour. “We’re stoked about playing on the upcoming winery tour because our ‘machinery’ is so big now that playing locally is getting difficult,” says Toby.
“Many of the songs were for Based on a True Story and Dr Boondigga ‘made’ on the road, but this time we wrote locally. We needed to spend some time all together laying them down. What’s different about the last albums is that we were pretty much all together when we recorded. Not so much recording live, but all there, hearing the live and recorded sounds and feeling those vibes.
Recently, they brought the house down at the Sydney Opera with an animated and illustrated preview of the new album. “Blackbird has actually been in our set for about two years bubbling away, changing and morphing. It sits well with the new stuff,” explains Toby.

Developed in Auckland, Path of Exile is good enough to go head to head with the very best action RPG games on the planet. In fact, it’s so good, it might even be better than Diablo III - the multi-year, mega-millions-of-dollars, ultra game. Not bad for a small team from Titirangi. The game - which is PC only, folks - recently went into open beta, which means anyone can download it and have a go. We thought we’d take a look at the experience as it stands right now (this is, after all, a game that is always in development) so you have a fair idea as to why you should go and grab it. Once you’re in the game, the first thing that strikes you is how dark and foreboding it is. There is a trend for a lot of games to resort to a cartoon based graphic set; maybe because it’s easier to develop or maybe the thinking is that realism is not what players want. Whatever the reason, Path of Exile went the gritty route, and it looks real nice. You start on a beach, washed up after some sea-borne misadventure, and immediately set about killing things and stealing their treasure (as is the way of this kind of game). Nice touches, like arrows actually piercing your enemies, are immediately obvious and prove to be a common thread in the game. While the title strays only slightly from the triedand-true formula laid down by Blizzard’s Diablo II, the changes Grinding Gear Games have made are nonetheless extremely interesting. Looting items stays the same, but once you’ve got them, you must barter directly with people to exchange them for other items - there is otherwise no form of currency to speak of. Additionally, poor quality items can be crafted into top-shelf kit, with the right application of the various bits and bobs you come across on your adventure. Skill trees, too, are vast and complex, with loads of depth to explore in the months and years to come. It’s good fun, even when playing through the same (dynamically different) zones for the umpteenth time. There’s heaps of content, with the promise of even more to come, and the developers promise that it will never become pay-to-win. Even if it wasn’t made right here in Aotearoa, it would still come with our heartiest recommendation. WRITTEN BY MIKE GUNN

It’s his latest live act – a multisensory experience of video, beats and laser – that Derek says is the lynchpin of his work. “My approach to performing has always been to try to build it up, always make it more of an experience for the audience,” he says. “Every time I have a successful tour I set that money aside and invest it back into the next tour so I can do something even cooler. “A few years ago, I didn’t have the means to put on a really cool show, but now with the success I have had in the States, the sky is the limit. We can do whatever we imagine, and it’s really fun to – after I make the music – imagine what I can do in a live scenario and build that from scratch.” The producer has certainly gone all out for his latest endeavor, in both the music and visual effect. The show he is bringing to Australasia is similar to his most recent Illumination Tour last year and because the behindthe-scenes work is too big to bring from the US, Derek is outsourcing to local production companies to build his pièce de résistance – a working 3D video city. “All the video content is connected to the music,” he explains excitedly. “It is very organic and uses real filmed content as opposed to screensavertype animation. I really wanted to create a show where the visuals match with the music so I put a lot of time into it. “We had eight filmmakers travelling all around the world to capture the images and I am able to control the images via my computers on stage as I improvise the music. It’s cool and has evolved a long way from what I was doing a couple of years ago. It’s pretty to look at (laughs).” The organic fusion of sound and sight has set Derek apart from other producers. Looking at his act like a band that he can “just jam out with”, he
says the improvised show allows him to “get hands-on with the music. If I was just hitting a play button I think I’d get bored”. His unique approach can be directly attributed to his misspent youth. Growing up in a small town in Colorado, Derek was exposed to a wide variety of different genres, saying there wasn’t just one kind of group playing music. Punk, hip-hop, rap – you name it, he’s worked with it. It’s this eclectic mix that has allowed him to form a diverse style of electronic music. “I wanted to create an original style/sound of music. The goal I had in mind for the last several years was me trying to fuse the two worlds of soulful hip-hop and banging dance floor party beats together. Trying to keep the energy intense is quite a challenge, but it’s what I have tried to do: Keep it classy, but fun so the audience can get their groove on. I’m all about the groove.” He’s also undertaken an ambitious and radically unique project on his new album, due to be released in the next few months. Unlike his previous work on EPs Spilling Over Every Side and Glowing In The Darkest Night, which were both created usual a range of sample snippets, Derek set out to create his own original vinyl and then sample from those tracks. “I spent the first year going into an old-school analogue studio with all kinds of musicians, writing and recording with them in the way so it would sound like it’s been recorded in the 1960s. I wanted it to sound like I was sampling from old records – which I was, but they were ones I had created. I feel like I have taken it to the next level.
