Margaret Cho, the undisputed queen of transgressive humour and not-so-subtle subversion, visits New Zealand for the first time with an all-new stand up show, Mother.
Mother offers up an untraditional look at motherhood and how we look at maternal figures and strong women in queer culture. It’s probably her edgiest show to date, filled with riotous observations on race, drugs, sexuality – gay-straight-everything in between, celebrity, culture, politics – nothing is sacred – least of all this Mother. Director, writer and star, Crispin Hellion Glover is bringing his live show and feature film to Skycity Theatre in Auckland this March. Glover’s very personal show includes a slide show with dramatic narration from eight different profusely illustrated books. There will be a special presentation of his feature film, Everything Is Fine (35mm print hand carried by Crispin himself). This provocative and challenging film is then followed by a Q&A with a book signing opportunity afterwards for everyone who attends. While here in NZ Crispin is keen to see “native flora, fauna botanical gardens, animal reserves, classical art museums and any architectural integrity of New Zealand!”

Miriama Kamo (Sunday - TV1) Mike McRoberts (60 Minutes - TV3) Sonya Wilson (20/20 - TV2)

The Best on The Box awards from TV Guide have been announced, and among the awards, the awards for sexiest male and sexiest female are always “highly anticipated.”

FUNNIEST PERSON ON TV? Ben Boyce (Jono And Ben At Ten - TV3) Urzila Carlson (7 Days - TV3) Jeremy Corbett (7 Days - TV3) Leigh Hart (Olympico - Comedy Central) Dai Henwood (7 Days - TV3) James McOnie (The Crowd Goes Wild - Prime) Jono Pryor (Jono And Ben At Ten - TV3)

SEXIEST WOMAN? Amanda Billing (Sarah, Shortland Street - TV2) Kerry-Lee Dewing (Kylie, Shortland Street - TV2) Rachel Hunter (New Zealand’s Got Talent - TV1) Anna Hutchison (Amy, Go Girls - TV2) Alison Mau (Fair Go - TV1) Toni Street (Saturday Breakfast - TV1)

Your house is on fire, what do save? My laptop and back up hard drives, then I thank my lucky stars my studios not on fire! Favourite ‘90s TV show? Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, of course! Dream job as a kid? A fireman, the thought of this now scares me shitless! First album? A very questionable R&B album, but the first album that made an impact on me was The K&D Sessions by Kruder & Dorfmeister. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? A professional basketball player… no really, I hate to think! Ultimate festival line-up? Rhythm and Vines 2013/14 line up, TBC. How do you discover new music? By spending far too many hours on the Internet. Worst job you’ve had? In the deli at the local supermarket.

SEXIEST MAN? Tim Balme (Mike, The Almighty Johnsons - TV3 / Jules, Nothing Trivial – TV1) Tamati Coffey (Breakfast/New Zealand’s Got Talent - TV1) Jason Kerrison (New Zealand’s Got Talent - TV1) Ben Mitchell (TK, Shortland Street - TV2) Mark Richardson (The Crowd Goes Wild - Prime / The Block NZ - TV3) Jay Ryan (Kevin, Go Girls - TV2) BEST ACTOR? John Campbell (Campbell Live - TV3) Sir Paul Holmes (Q+A - TV1)

Which song do you wish you wrote? Impossible to pick, so many great songs, but I am glad I had nothing to do with Deep Obsession’s ‘One and Only’… Biggest fear? Beyond that standard losing my family and friends etc… the thought of losing my hearing is very scary! First gig in attendance? For the life of me I can’t remember details but it would have been an all ages ‘rave’ and the BPM’s would have been far too high.

BEST DRAMA SERIES? The Almighty Johnsons (TV3) Go Girls (TV2) Nothing Trivial (TV1) Shortland Street (TV2) BEST NEWS? Joined by the legendary Carole King, it’s sure to be an emotional tribute as he runs through classics such as ‘Stayin’ Alive’ (Ooo, poor choice?) It’s a must for all Bee Gees lovers.

The god of nu metal-turned-indie alternative-turned awesome again are back. They were so amazing in their 2007 sold-out show that Linkin Park decided to come our way again on their Living Things tour. Although Chester joked it would be the band reenacting their music videos with puppets, we promise that won’t happen.

They broke up in 1996, but are playing their first show on Kiwi soil at Vector Arena. The UK band, led by Ian Brown, released their debut in 1989 and has been non-stop until their split 17 years ago. Changing the sound of British pop in the early 1990s, their work was considered some of the greatest in history.

OMNIPOTENT YOUTH SOCIETY SAN FRAN BATH HOUSE

8PM, $15, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ

Don’t miss this unique chance to hear touring Chinese folk rock band Omnipotent Youth Society. Touted as the next big thing in Chinese rock music, OYS has won a raft of awards. Their unique music incorporates violins, trumpets and harmonicas in their mix for a sound described as poetic, powerful and haunting.

Last June, a guy called Blood Orange (Dev Hynes) opened for Florence + The Machine at Vector Arena. Frankly, he blew my mind. I have been on the lookout ever since for his work to make it to New Zealand. At last it is here and is complimented by the beautiful sound that is Solange. In True, Hynes creates rich house beats with just the right amount of complexity; while Solange’s lovely voice drifts amongst it. The two artists meld perfectly together and have created something that crosses genres from dance to pop to soul. In the past, Solange’s music has reflected her sister Beyonce’s work in a way that can only lead to harsh comparisons. Her music was never as good and as popular. Then, Solange did the best thing she could have done and went independent, signing with Chris Taylor’s (Grizzly Bear) label Terrible Records (Twin Shadow, Grizzly Bear, Blood Orange, Arthur Russell). True sees Solange come into her own as she has found a style that suits her vocal capability, sounding natural and effortless. Lyrically the album has a very unique tone, floating between upbeat and sombre. Solange describes the album, as “a dance record, but the lyrics can get pretty dark at times”. True is different to anything I have heard in quite a while, and it absolutely removes Solange from comparison with her sister. The opening track ‘Losing You’ sets the mood for the whole album. Hynes plays around with an Afro drumbeat,

mixed with new wave synth sounds. There is just enough funk to set it apart from the dance tracks plaguing the airwaves right now. The video is well worth a watch too. ‘Lovers in the Parking Lot’ is one of the best tracks on the record. The strong drumbeat is joined by tinkling keys as Solange’s voice flutters over the top in the chorus, hitting her high notes with absolute perfection. The album as a whole is like no other. It sounds like all the good bits of Madonna in the 1980s, while also reflecting the non-pretentious parts of the modern indie electronic scene. Her collaboration with Blood Orange is a flawless move into a new direction while also staying true to her soul roots. WRITTEN BY ZOE FITZPATRICK

ARTIST Q&A

FRINGE FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS SAL VALENTINE VS THE FRINGE

GRAHAM CANDY MUSICIAN

AOTEA SQUARE

Who would play you in a film? If you know this guy he’s great! But I could imagine someone like Dan Veint (Auckland actor) to be the one.

5.30PM MON 18 FEB - SAT 23 FEB

According to the swinging Sal Valentine he’s “ballsdeep in excitement” to be playing in Aotea Square. Like an old-time jazz crooner, he’s full of class and style, with a wink and a nudge here and there. Joined by Auckland’s number-one band, The Babyshakes, picking their fights wisely, you can bet your bottom dollar it’ll be a show to remember.

How do you discover new music? Weird thing is, my ex-girlfriend was a great one for that, but usually YouTube rampages work brilliantly. Worst job you’ve had? No offense to all those in this field, but ... retail ... my goodness, I was glad to get out.

CELERY STORIES

Which song do you wish you wrote? Bohemian Rhapsody

MYERS PARK FRI 22 FEB - FRI 23 Feb 8.30PM, $15, ITICKET.CO.NZ

You know it’s going to be good when there is a warning that a show contains smoke effects and strobe lighting. Celery Productions and The Basement are joining their juggernaut creative forces to get audiences out of their seats and into the streets. The audience will be presented with a theatrical world where they will become collaborators rather than spectators.

THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE PONSONBY BAPTIST CHURCH 8PM - 10PM, $12-18, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ TUE 19 FEB - SAT 23 FEB

Ever wondered not just why we’re here, but what we ought to do about it? The Uncertain Principle does. Jess is a girl with too many answers and not enough questions, but a gift from a mysterious professor is about to show her nothing is certain – and what you don’t know can still hurt.

Your house is on fire, what do save? Flip, I don’t know. To be honest I would try and find a female in the house to carry out and look real cool. Favourite ‘90s TV show? Pfft, easy - Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Dragon Ball Z. Dream job as a kid? I always wanted to be some kind of sports star - obviously an All Black was one. First album? Elemeno P - Love and Disrespect. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? I’d probably be homeless. Ultimate festival line-up? The Lumineers, Tallest Man on Earth, Mumford and Sons, Bon Iver and Tame Impala.

Biggest fear? If you ever see me walking in the dark, you’ll always see me sketching out! In the dark my mind goes crazy. Damn you scary movies! First gig in attendance? Simon and Garfunkel was the first proper gig I went to. They were amazing as heck! Any vices? Pick my nose all the time when I drive. Farting. Always try to get the last chip or bit of drink. Staying in bed all day. Favourite lyric? ‘Skinny Love’ - “I told you to be patient, I told you to be fine, And I told you to be balanced, And I told you to be kind, In the morning I’ll be with you, But it will be a different kind” SEE HIM LIVE: SPRING AWAKENING SAT 23 FEB - SAT 09 MAR WESTPORT PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, AUCKLAND

FILM OF THE WEEK

THU 21 FEB THE BRIT AWARDS 2013

THIS IS 40

UKTV, 1.15PM (ENCORES, 7.30PM)

It is well and truly award season this summer, and after the glittering gossip-filled display that is the Grammys, Britain retaliates with their (potentially) classier display, namely The Brit Awards. The ceremony features live performances from Robbie Williams, One Direction, Muse, Emeli Sande and Mumford and Sons.

directed by JUDD APATOW Starring PAUL RUDD, LESLIE MANN, MAUDE APATOW

A BEAUTIFUL MIND SKY MOVIES GREATS, 8.30PM

Love him or hate him, Russell Crowe spells Oscar pulling power. Academy Award-winner for Best Picture, A Beautiful Mind is a towering achievement based on the life of Nobel Prize-winning scientist John Forbes Nash Jr, as he struggles between brilliance and schizophrenia. Jennifer Connelly also won an Oscar for her portrayal of Nash’s devoted yet troubled wife.

SAT 23 FEB SHAME TV FILM

Raw, heart wrenching and, well, unashamed in its portrayal of Brandon. He’s a rich, well-to-do man who struggles with sexual addiction, which ranges from masturbation, one night stands and hookers to wild threesomes. When his somewhat needy sister Cissy arrives unannounced for an indefinite stay at his New York apartment, his routine is disrupted and her needs impinge.

When a director makes a film starring his missus and children that’s about a difficult period in an already tempestuous relationship, one can’t help but read a massive autobiographical element into it. As with Funny People Judd Apatow seems to be telling a deeply personal story here, but where that prior film pulled back the curtains on the world of comedy and fame, This Is 40 sees Apatow mistaking his personal life as the perfect fodder for another dramedy that stretches beyond a comfortable running time. While they didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the film, This Is 40’s dramatic elements are bound to prove its most divisive quality, with Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s selfcentered bickering making it difficult to root for them as individuals or become invested in their future as a couple. Presumably Apatow’s trying to convey either some unique

insights or universal truths about relationships here, but he mostly depicts a couple of well-to-do selfish assholes grumbling about their pretty good lives. Much of the film’s humour stems from Rudd and Mann’s hurling of insults at one another, so seeing beyond Apatow’s self-indulgence in recreating marital feuding is critical to enjoying This Is 40’s comedic aspects. Luckily the leads share strong chemistry and an enthusiasm for the material, with Rudd demonstrating his usual outstanding comic timing and relish for improvisation and Mann showing off similar skills. The strong supporting cast also excels and the film delivers plenty of laugh out loud moments – if you can get past its uninspiring depiction of domestic strife. BY STEVE NEWALL, FLICKS.CO.NZ

Shit worth dRINKING

DI LUSSO 117 LOWER STUART ST

Come for a quiet, come for a party. Di Lusso’s a cosy corner, oozing a true Dunedin feel through the brick work with a pinch here and there of Wellington-style hipsterness. Chandeliers, deer heads on the wall – it’s a fine establishment with top quality drinks to match – particularly their cocktails.

LYME BAR 817 COLOMBO ST

With top-tapping much from the ‘60s to ‘80s, this is your place to be for a pre-dinner drink, a midweek cocktail before a concert, after work drinks with business associates or dancing the night away at the weekend. It’s fun and fresh – much like its namesake.

HAWTHORN LOUNGE

There is something very Wellington about Hawthorn Lounge. As pretentious as their name may sound, don’t let it fool you – it’s a warm and inviting place, with a décor that’s unique. Modelled after a 1920s gentlemen’s club, there’s leather, leather and more leather when it comes to comfortable, classy armchairs to recline in. Low light is provided by green shaded lamps, giving it the ambience. An open fire crackles in the corner and the staff wear natty waistcoats and caps. These fine dressed helpers also know how to make a superior cocktails, old-school drinks to match the atmosphere; classic, clean flavours and premium ingredients.

THE FRONT MAN AND LEAD SINGER OF LINKIN PARK LOOKS AT CHANGES TO THE BAND SINCE THEIR LAST VISIT TO OUR SHORES.

The last time US rockers Linkin Park set foot in New Zealand on their 2007 tour, lead singer Chester Bennington was almost arrested for “bioterrorism” – with a pair of muddy golf shoes. “Apparently they weren’t clean enough, and I didn’t think my golf shoes were something I needed to declare,” he says with a laugh. “It would have been my ‘biting the head off a bat’ moment.” But despite his run-in with the law, Bennington is clearly bursting with energy and excitement for the band’s forthcoming arrival in the country – and not just because he wants to get out on the golf course “on a day when the flags are standing up”, after a few disastrous rounds in a howling gale last time. A lot has changed in six years and it has been a period of significant growth for the band’s sound. The two massive sold-out shows in 2007 were on the back of their album Minutes to Midnight – their first album since Meteora in 2003. While it was still heavy with all the elements that made Linkin Park who they were – Mike Shinoda’s lyrically-innovative raps, seven-string guitars and a bit of scratching – it was the first step towards change. And what followed was A Thousand Suns in 2010, a radical departure from anything the band had done before. Tied around a central theme of sociopolitical unrest, it was layered with instrumental interludes, samples from historical speeches and there wasn’t a single scratch in sight. With incredible commercial success they had found with their iconic sound – including the diamond-certified debut album Hybrid Theory – it was a risky move for a band who had, until now, built their reputation on the nu-metal genre tag. “We talked about it quite often,” He says of the risks involved. “We were like, ‘Okay, we could really be chopping our own head off here.’ But we decided it was worth it, to make a record we were happy with that was truly representative of the band and where we wanted to go.” Admitting it polarised the band’s fan base, Bennington says the boys felt confident going into the recording studio with producer Rick Rubin, who agreed to come on board so long as the band “didn’t make a Linkin Park record”. “We could make whatever we wanted – there were no rules. That was the

only rule. And that opened the door to going in and going way out. We kind of went into orbit and it was fun.” When asked if their latest record, Living Things, is the band coming back down to earth, Chester lets out a laugh and says, “kind of”, before adding that “we like the idea of being in outer space, we want to live there, but we want to take a piece of home with us”. That epitomises the sound of the record – a mix of conceptual sounds and “classic” Linkin Park elements, Living Things was the record that left the band “feeling comfortable in their own skin”. “For so long we were in the frame of mind that we were always pushing forward and moving away from what came before and that idea only works for so long until you can’t do that anymore,” says. It would be a mistake to think these creative decisions were something the band took lightly. Bennington describes them as the kind of band that “writes a chorus 70 different times until we get one everyone likes – and if they don’t like it, we go back and write it again”. On a good day, a rewrite is lower than 60 times lyrically and less than 30 musically. Although creatively exhausting, that’s why there is more than one driving force to turn to when it comes to crafting a hit record. “I’m fortunate enough to work with Mike [Shinoda],” Bennington admits. “I’m not discrediting the contribution of any of the other band members, but, you know, I feel like Mike is truly one of the most prolific artists of our time – he is unstoppable. He writes and writes, and everything he does is good. It can be intimidating, but for me it’s invigorating.” Talking about the band’s upcoming return to Auckland this Thursday, Chester jokes the band’s show will consist of “25 minutes of puppeteering our music videos to a backing track”. But in all seriousness, he says the show is firmly grounded in what the fans want to hear – no going out to space this time. “We’re a pretty straightforward rock act. We are basically playing almost everything we think people wanna hear. It will be a fun show and we look forward to it.” WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER See them live: LINKIN PARK THU 21 FEB VECTOR ARENA, AUCKLAND

Unfortunately, Colonial Marines falls into that undesirable second category. To start with, the opening cinematic features unimaginative camera angles, clunky character animations, overlapping lip-syncing and an uninspired script to match. While an attempt to capture the aesthetic style of an Alien film was present, all of the polish and class was completely absent. It was more Starship Troopers (the directto-DVD sequels) than the brooding atmosphere of Aliens.

funkygifts.co.nz

By

By rights, any game based on the Alien movies should be all kinds of awesome (literally, every kind). Over the years, though, the execution of games based on the gun-laden, corridor-filled, terror-packed franchise has been spotty. Sure, there have been great games with Giger’s monsters in them, but more often the titles that bear the Alien name have been... sub-optimal, shall we say.

RRP $59.99 funkygifts.co.nz

But the problems lie with everything knocking around in this beautifully realised world. The character animation, both for the human marines and the aliens, is extremely disappointing. The alien’s locomotion certainly makes them alienlike, but unfortunately, it’s more of the drunken ET variety, than that of a nimble double-jawed killing machine. In a nutshell, xeno encounters in this game are just not scary. The multiplayer might be the saving grace of Aliens: Colonial Marines, but it’s still not without its faults. It still looks incredibly awkward to anyone watching – aliens quite often snap to walls or ceilings and often appear to be running at you sideways. It’s the best part of the package, but that alone doesn’t make it good – nothing does, particularly. It’s a shame that a title seven years in the making could result in something so lacklustre, but it appears that the elongated, “stopstart” development ultimately resulted in an inconsistent and disappointing final result. It’s a double-miss for Gearbox after the awful Duke Nukem Forever. Aliens: Colonial Marines might be best jettisoned into space alongside it. WRITTEN BY ANGUS DEACON

What’s the ethos of your style? Simplicity and comfort comes first – there is no point wearing clothes that feel or make you feel uncomfortable as it shows. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Cleopatra. Not only was she the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, she was well acknowledged for her excess and elaborate gold necklaces, headwear and rings. What music/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Steven Tyler, of course. Famous for his headscarves on stage and his feather clip-in, not to mention his heavy silver ring collections on both hands. Sometimes it is amusing to see how many necklaces he has on at one time! Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Leggings. They are not pants. It is not appealing to wear them as jeans with crop tops. What’s the must-have look this season? Maxi dresses. They are the best and the easiest way to look feminine and summer ready. Last time we checked, dip dye prints and silk overlay are still in fashion. Colours/patterns big this season? Coral and teal blue are huge this summer – you can’t walk into a store without those two colours. Patterns are usually geometric plus floral for spring and summer – a good economical store to check out for both colour and patterns this season would be Kookai.

There’s plenty we know about Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power). She’s been the darling of the alt-music scene for a while now. A bit of a poster child for individualism and creativity, and self-deprecation too. She’s been the party babe, her fragility and that eternal teetering on the precipice between commercial and independent success. They’ve always been part of the appeal and the mystique. She does well to mix her feminine allure with an aloof ethereal quality. In many ways, she’s a sort of Stevie Nicks for the Naughties. And what a voice: soulful, detached, drifting but very potent. After six years of quiet she’s returned with her entirely solo product, Sun. Unlike 2006’s The Greatest, with the full Southern Memphis treatment, Sun is all about 80’s synths, keys, beats, guitar and vocal layering. Many of the songs are tethered to disco, electronica and new romanticism. ‘Ruin’ is pretty catchy. It has this nifty oscillating piano motif while ‘Cherokee,’ which opens the album, has a rootsy propellant behind it. There has been a few ups and downs while touring the new album, “Turns out I’ve had angioedema since I was a kid and I didn’t know, so I had to cancel Europe because I had to keep going to hospital - my throat would swell, and I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t want to be weak, I wanted to do my job, but I couldn’t.”

30

|

that point) Marshall didn’t go near a studio for over seven months. She’d told reporters later that the feeling was very rejected. She’d been writing songs forever, so looking for a new way to approach her work was a real challenge. And that finally kicked in. She sat at a piano. While she had her usual guitars, the cases were never opened. Instead the adventure was about experimenting with different synths and keyboards, brushing off the dust, plugging in the floppies and bashing out some tunes. Returning from Mexico to a rented a house in Malibu for nine months she invested heavily in building her own studio. She recruited her old Cat Power band mates in (Judah Bauer of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Jim White of The Dirty Three among them), and jammed up some songs live. Yet despite all the work it just didn’t gel, it wasn’t the sounds in her head and in the end got scrapped. Instead she headed to Paris to work with producer Philippe Zdar, who presided over mixing duties, whilst she squirreled away on new material and at a full gestation, nine months later, Sun was born. Marshall is now bringing her new sound and album to New Zealand. She has been touring the world with a new band since late 2012, and we look forward to welcoming her back to our side of the world! WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

It’s a shame dates have had to be cancelled, because Sun has been a triumphant return for Power and she should’ve been able to celebrate. Her first album of original material in six years, it’s her highest-charting album in the United States so far, opening at #10, and has recently earned her a Brit Award nomination.
