NEWS R.I.P. AJAX
Australian dance music artist DJ Ajax has been killed in a car accident in Melbourne. The indie/electro DJ was known as a founder of Bang Gang DJ’s and was owner of Sweat It Out Music (Home to Yolanda Be Cool & Parachute Youth). Dance music magazine Mixmag said Ajax, real name Adrian Thomas, was “known for a love of quick mixing and explosive tunes,” and “picked up a number of DJ awards early on in his career.” He had been voted one of Australia’s top five DJ every year since 2005. He died after being struck by a car in Melbourne on Thu 28 Feb.

DJ Fresh and Rita Ora have announced a one-off NZ show at The Powerstation. Show day is in less than two weeks and they’ve pegged the ticket price to just $49 and ensured tickets are available for all-ages, with a fully licensed bar for the over 18s. DJ Fresh is credited as one of the founding fathers of drum ‘n’ bass. His live shows and production skills alike continue (since the late 90s) to roll out in authentic fashion. Rita’s debut album, Ora, personally signed by Jay-Z to his Roc Nation label, debuted at Number 1 in UK, and has established Rita as a major player.

David Bowie’s much-anticipated new album The Next Day is now available to stream as a worldwide exclusive on the iTunes Store. The album stream will remain available until release day on Fri 08 Mar. The album’s second single, ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’, was also released last week, along with an accompanying short film starring Bowie and Tilda Swinton as a happily married couple. Their world is disturbed and then re-arranged by the intrusion of a celebrity couple played by Andrej Pejic and Saskia De Brauw. The story at once captures a twenty first century moment in its convergence of age, gender and the normal/celebrity divide.

Singer from The Temptations Richard Street passed away early last Wednesday morning from a pulmonary embolism in a Las Vegas hospital. Richard officially joined The Temptations in 1971 and stayed with the band for over 20 years. Richard’s death follows the passing of Damon Harris, also a singer in The Temptations on Mon 18 Feb. Both singers joined The Temptations at the same time with Harris leaving just four years later.

It doesn’t take much to excite every dance music fan in the entire universe when it comes to Daft Punk, subtly was the key when they simply updated their website and social media for the first time in a year with one lone image – The Daft Punk helmet with the record label logo for Columbia hinting towards a new album. Daft Punk then treated Saturday Night Live viewers to 15 seconds of new music by way of a mysterious trailer. Adding fuel to the rumors of a forthcoming album. Producer and guitarist Nile Rodgers had revealed that he was working with the French electronic duo back in August, and hinted in January that the new material would be coming out soon.

Vodafone confirmed last week and announced the launch of its 4G network. 4G will carry mobile Internet data 10 times faster than 3G. The service is live for just under a third of Auckland and Vodafone plans to offer 4G mobile Internet to 15 cities and towns by the end of this year. About 65,000 Vodafone customers have 4G-capable devices. Telecom launched a 4G trial for 100 customers last month; Vodafone sped past it with a commercial launch last week.

The finalists for the Taite Music Prize 2013 have now been confirmed. Named after the late Dylan Taite, one of the country’s most highly respected music journalists, this will be the fourth year for the award. The Taite Music Prize’s purpose is to recognise outstanding creativity for an entire collection of music contained on one album. The winner will receive a cash prize of $10,000, to be spent as they wish. Get down to your friendly Neighbourhood, where just like the area you live in the people are friendly and inviting. Cure your hangover with the sounds of DJ Chris Cox – he’s been addicted to music since he was old enough to hit play on the turntable, digging Solid Gold Hits and stepping it up with funky beats.
Atoms For Peace is a super group comprised of some of the best in the alt rock scene. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke fronts the band, backed by Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Nigel Godrich (Radiohead producer), Mauro Refosco on percussion and the drummer from R.E.M. and Beck, Joey Waronker. While the group have been playing together since 2009, Amok is their first official release and it is likely to be well-received. Each of the musicians involved are renowned for their talent and individuality, but unsurprisingly it is Yorke whose influence is the strongest and most recognisable. It sounds very much like another Thom Yorke album, but with a very esteemed and qualified backing band. Most notably Flea has made a huge shift in style. His work in Atoms For Peace is far from the funk bass we are accustomed to. There are definitely points in the album where one starts to question whether he is playing bass at all. At certain points it is easy to lose track of which song is playing. If you are not paying close attention some tracks do feel as if they merge together into one long song. This is fine, however, because it is one very good long song. There aren’t any super catchy tunes on the album, but that isn’t really Yorke’s style. Amok should be appreciated as a whole as there aren’t really any weak points. It could serve as enjoyable background music, although if you do engage with it you
will get a lot more value as little gems start to shine through. The jazz guitar in ‘Reverse Running’ compliments Yorke’s voice perfectly while the keys in ‘Dropped’ create a sense of intrigue that continues throughout the album. All of the melody is very intricate, intertwining gracefully with Yorke’s vocals. Combined with tribal drumbeats the album achieves quite a raw feel, which is rare for a group using so many synths and electronic keys. Atoms For Peace has a slight selfindulgent tone that is typical of Yorke, although he is one of the few musicians who can get away with it. Those who will enjoy this album the most are the die-hard Yorke fans that love Radiohead and have closely followed his solo work and collaborations. The rest will surely still appreciate the complex musicality and Yorke’s haunting voice. Amok is nothing short of what I expected – a high-quality galaxy of talent, tolerable pretention and awesome atmospheric synths with wavering vocals. WRITTEN BY ZOE FITZPATRICK

True Blood Season 5 goes deep into the battle between the Vampire Authority and “vampire fundamentalists” – a political power play whose outcome could decide not only the fate of Sookie and her Bon Temps friends, but of all human existence. Oh, and not to mention more soft-core porn scenes and Anna Paquin’s boobs.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS GENERAL RELEASE
Directed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral), brings yet another adaptation of Charles Dicken’s classic novel. It’s not Gwyn and Ethan Hawke, but to be fair it’s probably better acted and less American. Starring Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch.
OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL GENERAL RELEASE
Welcome to the Wizard of Oz prequel guaranteed to scare your children. James Franco stars as the title character, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, who is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. There, he is surrounded by uberbabes Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams.

Earning a reputation as a deviant mockumentary writer alongside Sacha Baron Cohen, Dan Mazer also gives his directing chops a go here with this Brit rom-com, examining the relevance of romance in holy matrimony. Rose Byrne plays it perfectly straight as the highly-strung, career-driven Nat, newly married to Rafe Spall’s writer-in-limbo Josh. Temptation threatens to detach their already frail union as Josh is reignited by an old flame (Anna Faris in an adorable, toned-down role) while Nat is introduced to a new one (Simon Baker’s Guy, a walking business suit). The main issue is that we’re never engrossed into the newlyweds’ supposed chemistry, brushed away by a minute-long montage at the start. After the opening titles, it’s all down hill as Nat grows increasingly irked by Josh’s buffoonery – and you won’t blame her. He’s an unlikeable douche.
Luckily, the film earns laughs with some well-executed set pieces, such as Guy’s attempt to woo Nat with doves and a confused violinist or Faris’ introduction to the awkward mechanics of a surprise menajahtwa. Some scenes nosedive into lazy crassness however – specifically those involving Olivia Colman’s mentally unstable marriage counsellor or the one involving the in-laws and an X-rated iPad photo gallery – but I suppose this comes as no surprise given Mazer’s filmography. Minnie Driver boosts the material up a notch, capturing the comedic peak of dean-pan pessimism as Nat’s wedlock-weakened friend – acting as a sort of ‘ghost of nuptial future’. The film awkwardly takes a step back to let Stephen Merchant do his thing, but there’s a good reason for that: he’s damn funny. BY LIAM MAGUREN, FLICKS.CO.NZ

GROOVE GUIDE HAS A GOOD OLD NATTER WITH THE EAGLES GUITARIST AND FOUNDING BAND MEMBER GLENN FREY WHO’S RETURNING TO NEW ZEALAND THIS MONTH WITH OUT THE FLANNEL SHIRT. Ok, so where are you? “Well, I’m here in my studio, the Doghouse, it’s in LA. We recorded (the Eagles) A Long Road Out Of Eden here. It’s been around about 15 or 16 years or so. This is where I also recorded my new album [After Hours]. It’s different from my previous rock stuff. I wanted to do material from the Great American Songbook. My Dad’s 91 and my Mum is 87. I wanted to record something from their day - from the 1930’s to the 1960’s. I think at this point in my career I could do something honest, and take a bit of a risk.” What was behind the process for the new album? Richard [Davis] and Michael Thomson and I started looking up these songs on YouTube and we were arranging them, in the studio on piano. We would break them down, work out the orchestra parts and what knot. I wanted songs that are really great, that I really loved like ‘For Sentimental Reasons’ and Burt’s ‘The Look of Love’. There’s ‘Route 66’ [he hums the chorus] which is a great, enduring sort of rhythm… and there’s [Una Mae Carlisle’s] ‘Getting old before my time’. I like a cocktail hour song, a sort of lounge feel.” Lounge and Jazz seem miles from your earlier stuff? “There was always music in our house, mainly what my parents like and I heard plenty of pop on the radio so I went that direction… I had early bands like the Hideouts [later the Subterraneans], which were all about being a teenager with a guitar. Pop was the way to go, but I’ve always like the old stuff, too - especially the jazz standards. There are tracks by Tony Bennett, and Dinah Washington - like ‘I wanna cry’. At night you just want to sit down and chill out and listen to these great songs. The Eagles were almost early Americana - Musicians seem to look back to the earliest roots of their country to find their identity when things are bad. “I know what you mean about musicians wanting to look back (to the folk era), what they are calling Americana - that thing of looking back
(to find some core identity to hang on to in modern depression ravaged, globalised America). I’m not sure that’s the case though. In the 70’s we were sort of stealing from our forefathers. Country and AOR was popular on FM radio, where album tracks got played. You could be more experimental, too.” What is the story behind the great song ‘Hotel California’? “That song - it was a demo that Eagles guitarist Don [Felder] wrote. He’d given us plenty of ideas since he’d joined but always without lyrics. This song had room to write something with it. We called it ‘Mexican Reggae’. That was the working title. Don [Henley] and I wrote most of it [the lyrics to ‘Hotel California’]. We all drove into L.A. in the evening. Nobody was from there but if you drive in to Los Angeles in the evening you see this glow on the horizon of lights (like the Arctic lights, sort of). Don and I were thinking of Hollywood, all those dreams of being a big star. So we got the messages of drugs, booze and all that stuff that was so excessive in the 70’s. We wrote ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ and ‘Wasted Time’ too, and other songs based on those trips.” For a while the Eagles were living in that song, weren’t you? Living the highlife you were singing about? “Yes we became the occupants… the guests of Hotel California. But, you know, it was a first time for everything. When you’re young, everthing’s on your radar. [And] we tried it! There’s a first time for everything and a last! We were part of that thing [the record industry juggernaut]. But that was how it worked then. You were part of that world then. It was all very exciting and we were along for the ride.” Your songs have become part of the infrastructure of our lives just like those jazz numbers, on your new album, are to you and your folk’s generation? “Yes, that’s true. I am humbled some times when you hear of your stuff being sung (by a school choir, at a wedding, etc.) It’s great to know that the Eagles songs are part of people’s lives. Crysis 3 begins 24 years after Crysis 2 left off. Super-soldier Prophet has returned to New York and finds the entire city entombed in a massive “nanodome”, built by the CELL Corporation. Inside the nanodome’s greenhouse, the rubble of New York is teeming with swamps, rivers, foliage, and danger. Prophet’s old squaddie “Pyscho” is taking the fight to the Corporation. Naturally, Prophet takes it upon himself to get involved. Pretty quickly things start falling apart, and before Prophet and Pyscho have had enough time to catch up on the good times, the Ceph — Crysis’s alien antagonists — are back. For the curious gamer picking up the series for the first time, Crysis 3’s storytelling is a jarring and confusing experience. However, even for those more familiar with what’s come before, Crysis 3 still rambles. This internal confusion is reflected in the game’s dialogue. The writing is poor, verging on the comical, and the voice actors can only work with what they’ve got. The story is full of misogynistic asides, clichéd one liners, tired genre tropes, masculine chest beating, and unnecessary melodrama. Central to Crysis’s gameplay is the nano-suit. This super-soldier battle armour enables Prophet to cloak, turn his skin into tough armour, leap to high ledges, and even hack into electronic devices. By customising the nano-suit, you can also tailor your gameplay - meaning that there are a number of ways to complete each combat section. On the whole, Crysis 3’s combat is good. The combat mechanic has not evolved much from its predecessors, but its core is still there and it is still enjoyable. CELL troopers can still take a few bullets and the Ceph are still fast and deadly. The signature “on the fly” weapon and suit customisation has been improved on, and it is easy to manage with the PS3’s limited controller real-estate. But it is with the second arrow that Crysis 3 finds its form. The game is simply stunning to behold. Even with the dated ability of the PlayStation 3, the game oozes beauty. Those enjoying it on a suitably powerful computer are in for an extraordinarily immersive experience. Crysis 3 is set in a world that can take your breath away - but as an overall experience, it’s flawed. E C N DAVID BOWIE – THE NEXT DAY ALBUM OUT FRI 08 MAR
BOWIE IS BACK WITH A BANG. AFTER 10 YEARS IN HIDING HE LAYS THE RUMOURS TO REST AND IS SET TO RELEASE HIS NEW ALBUM THIS WEEK. On Tue 08 Jan David Bowie celebrated his 66th birthday by gifting new music - his first in 10 years - to an unsuspecting world. And while that present may have lost some of it’s new-toy shine, the celebrations are only just beginning for Bowie’s 24th studio album, The Next Day, which is streaming on iTunes, ahead of the Fri 08 Mar release date. Following turn-of-the-last-century releases Heathen and Reality, Bowie suddenly disappeared, cutting short a tour, ignoring music (and the music industry), and making only occasional appearances. There were also rumors of failing health so serious that that The Flaming Lips penned ‘Is David Bowie Dying?’ He wasn’t out for the count though, and now Wayne Coyne, along with the rest of us, have the answer loud and clear: “Here I am, not quite dying,” Bowie proclaims defiantly on the muscular title track, while his band punch and howl. And really, the secret recording sessions that have taken place over the past few years and the seemingly out of the blue album-bombshell is very in keeping with Bowie’s sense of playful mystique. Hell, he may have even just reinvented himself once again. Somewhat surprisingly this return from a decade’s absence feels very present - although full of sneaky backward glances. There’s no doubt that working with long-time producer Tony Visconti will have helped strengthen Bowie’s links with his earlier work. There are mentions of old Berlin hangouts in ‘Where Are We Now?’ the debt ‘You Feel So Lonely You Could Die’ certainly owes to ‘Five Years’ and name-checks for the likes of Joan Baez and Brigitte Bardot. This play on past versus present is revisited via the typically artful cover, which takes the iconic Heroes sleeve of 1977 and partly obscures the image with a brand new font called Doctrine (which was designed especially for this purpose). And on the back, a similarly stark track listing, making the new album a historical timeline, of sorts.
Despite the references to his past, Bowie’s songs are very much about today - as you’d expect from someone so known for their avant-garde, and sometimes highly controversial, choices in regards to societal and cultural mores. He offers brutal commentary on recent notable events, such as the highschool massacre of ‘Valentine’s Day’, made all the more unsettling by having one of the album’s most engaging pop arrangements. Similarly the album’s second single ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’, where Bowie reflects on the celebrity-obsessed world we live in, noting, “The stars are never sleeping, Dead ones and the living.” There are plenty of intellectually stimulating and emotionally charged lyrics, yet all contained within arrangements that are sleek, yet robustly modern. Mostly recorded with Bowie stalwarts such as guitarist Gerry Leonard, bassist Gail Anne Dorsey and drummer Zachary Alford, there are also valuable contributions from guitarist’s Earl Slick and David Torn. The whole album has a vast musical scope, which can be heard in the contrasting styles of ‘If You Can See Me’, an invigorating oddity which kicks off with Gail Ann Dorsey’s soaring vocal, and the introspective vulnerability of closing number ‘Heat’, with its sonorous bass and Bowie’s Scott Walkeresque baritone delivery. And although Bowie sings most of the album in his staccato rock voice, when he does unleash the theatrics for two big ballads it’s worth the wait; the goth doo-wop of ‘You Feel So Lonely You Could Die’ and the majestic New Romantic love song ‘Where Are We Now? The Next Day speaks to fans of a mixed-up, celebrity-crazed, war-torn world, in familiar yet inventive tones. This may just be the winning frisson that Bowie and Visconti have managed to create... and if not, there’s plenty to ponder as Bowie signs-off with, “I am a seer, but I am a liar.” WRITTEN BY REN KIRK

The Grandmaster is one of the pioneers of hip hop DJing, cutting and mixing. As an electrician in the Bronx, New York he invented the concept of the crossfader (allowing him to switch from one source to another without a break in the music). He (and his group “The Furious Five”) are the first hip-hop act to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame. Grandmaster Flash is THE party DJ, mixing between hip hop classics, house anthems, dubstep and hyping the crowd on the mic.

An afternoon interview with Ed Sheeran is just like his live shows – there are no bells, whistles or laser lights. The 22-year-old speaks softly, surprisingly serious as he considers each question or comment of praise with a sense of bewilderment. Either he has heard it all before or he is one of the world’s most humble artists – taken back by his own success, despite his record-breaking achievements. After a lifetime of hard work, it all changed in an instant for Ed. In 2010, he bought a ticket to Los Angeles with no other contacts or gigs lined up, except one open mic poetry night. Before his US breakthrough, he’d had moderate success, releasing a couple of albums and playing gigs in London. He played shows furiously all over the city before his was spotted by singer Jamie Foxx at The Foxxhold. Jamie loved Ed’s work so much he let him use his recording studio, feature on his radio show and even had use of Jamie’s mansion during his stay in Hollywood. Still a teenager, not many artists can boast this kind of “as luck would have it” claim to fame. In typical Ed fashion, he downplays the event, saying, “I was probably quite gushing about it at the time.” “Yeah I guess I am a bit of a risk taker, but really I just can’t sit still in one place for a long period of time. I was playing mostly comedy and open mic nights over there, so not only was I the only English-born guy in the club, I was also the only performer with a guitar. It was an interesting experience.” It would still be another year before Ed Sheeran would become a household name with – believe it or not – a song about a drug-addled prostitute. Having worked in a homeless shelter at just 18 years old, the West Yorkshire singer was touched by his experience and put pen to paper. “I was kind of quite naïve,” he said of the song. “I was a bit taken aback by some of the stories that I heard. I got home that night and I just wrote a lot of the lyrics. I wanted to write it so it sounded kind of upbeat, so you wouldn’t really know what it’s about, because it’s quite a dark subject.” “I think I was definitely surprised at the start that it was so popular.” Popular is an understatement. The debut single entered the UK charts at number three, selling more than 58,000 copies in its first week. It became a top 10 hit in eight countries and has now been certified a three-times
platinum single. Singles ‘Lego House’ and ‘Drunk’ followed suit and his debut album + entered the UK albums chats at number one, later become certified quadruple platinum. All before his 21 birthday. There is obviously something that has stuck a chord with audience and viewers alike – including those in high places. Ed was asked to perform ‘The A Team’ at the Diamond Jubilee before the royal family, and once again for them – and billions of audiences members – at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics, singing a rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’. Like a lad, it was just Ed, his guitar and a red hoodie. No fancy stuff, no lights or pyrotechnics. “There were nerves, but also the sense that I’m never going to get the chance to do this again so I may as well enjoy it,” he says of the performance. “I guess I was nervous. I just wanted to make sure I did a good job of someone else’s song.” “I should have gone out afterwards [to celebrate]. I got in a cab to go to the after-party and I thought, nah and just went home to sleep. I was too tired.” For a red head, there seemed to be nothing to rouse Ed to speak passionately about his work – not even an upcoming tour with the gorgeous (and single) Taylor Swift. All he can muster is, he’s “looking forward to it”. And while Ed’s not forthcoming about their rumoured relationship either, he will say he hopes to do some more recording on the road with Taylor – a duet perhaps? “[There’s] no real plan [for a new album]. I just write what comes to mind and what’s around me at the time. I don’t have a process. I just want to focus on writing good songs and I have a couple lined up already. I like the music I make, so it’s going to be similar to the first album.” On the lead up to his upcoming New Zealand show, one that is highly anticipated by his fans, he will speak fondly about how he’s looking forward to being back in Middle Earth. “This is quite geeky but I think I would rather take some time and see the Lord of The Rings set and location. I’m not much of a bungy jumper, I’m afraid of heights,” he says. “This time I would love to come back and spend a bit more time seeing the country, I think I get one day”. WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER
