TOUR

@peace’s second release has the outfit creating a record that expands on their hybrid of beats and flow, making Girl Songs a more cohesive, fully realised effort than their début. Whilst their self-titled EP cut a fine line between rap and funk instrumental breaks, like on the stellar ‘Home’, this one presents something harder to pin down. To the uninitiated, this may sound like an extension of Tom Scott’s misfit group Homebrew, which could be assigned to the two singles ‘Cake’ and ‘Flowers’, but under the surface it possesses a raw and brooding quality, with an emphasis on laid back funk grooves and straight laced rhymes contributed by both Scott and Lui Tuiasau. Nineties rap commandeers the flow, and though the boys probably wouldn’t accept the ‘conscious rap’ tag, it comes to mind – A Tribe Called Quest and Common particularly. Girl Songs also boasts old school, neo-soul instrumentation that harkens back to older realms of influence. ‘Cake’ sounds like grimy production from late seventies Isley Brothers, ‘Cats Like Fish’ borrows hung over Gaye funk, whilst intro ‘Bar Stool Balancing Act’ opens with Scott’s recognisable drawl before trickling into a section that sounds like D’Angelo on the piano after a pack of Port Royals. ‘Midnight’ has a beautiful instrumental, almost a jazzy lilt, before breaking into chopped drums and original samples. Tuiasau particularly stands out on this track, a worthy, harder component to Scott’s eccentric Kiwi style. These influences

can be heard from the outset but on repeated listens, it becomes something only @peace can pull off. The second half of the album is dense, experimental. ‘2 Die 4’ is an anomaly and the most intriguing cut. Creeping, backwards guitar licks and multi-tracked singing/spitting make this a weird standout – something entirely singular in their repertoire. ‘Wandering’ has a steady, summery vibe, which would be a good follow up single. It’s an introspective cut, breezy and gentle. This vibe comes to a head on closing track ‘My Dad’, an unsettling track that invites interpretation. All up, Homebrew this is not. @ peace have created their own path, their own sound, a mixing pot of summery soul, funk, ghostly R&B and chilled rhymes. Still something New Zealanders can call their own, but this may take off overseas before we know it. Girl Songs gets things done, not only for Kiwi rap, but Kiwi music – this shouldn’t be tagged so easily. A solid follow up. Written By Jake Ebdale

Everyone’s favourite Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother takes a turn at his own romantic comedy, writing, directing and starring in this coming-ofage drama. The story follows a mid-thirties bookworm – newly single and unhappy with this job – who forms a semi-romantic bond with a 19-year-old college student (Elizabeth Olsen – the better Olsen sister).

Reining in his trademark dark excesses, director Sam Raimi’s prequel is both a satisfying set up to the 1939 classic and an appropriate homage. But while many modern audience members will be pleased that this is virtually shorn of musical interludes, it’s also light on lightness – save for James Franco’s nearpermanent grin.

attract the same audience as Judy Garland has, Raimi has gathered a fine trio of spellcasters. Williams is winsome, Weisz suitably wicked and Kunis is a clear winner with her complex character that allows her to prove that she really is Meg off Family Guy.

And although the story is similar to the original – with its Kansan resident joined by a coalition of the broken and the missing for a battle against witches – it actually feels more like a Star Wars prequel with its gathering evil forces and one character’s journey to the dark side.

Following the same monochrome/ Technicolour mix of Wizard, Raimi’s Oz is a world of brilliant blues, vivid reds and enchanting emeralds. And as well as his traditional swirling, whirling cameras he also makes good use of 3D, throwing everything from spears to flying baboons at the audience.

SHIT WORTH EATING

DADDY O’S 90-92 MANNERS ST

Rock around the clock tonight with Daddy O. They’re a contemporary, gourmet and affordable dining, but with a 1940s/50s twist. There’s an old school live jazz pianist over dinner Thursday to Saturday nights and Sunday brunch, followed by live music most evenings. With class and style, music and food.

AMBROSIA CAFÉ 226 QUEEN ST, NELSON

Clutter free, with great spaces indoors and outdoors, you can relax and take in the Tasman surroundings at Ambrosia. Breakfast is their speciality, with Eggs Benedict the main feature of deliciousness that makes them truly famous.

CIRCUS CIRCUS

More than just your average café, Circus Circus takes the theme to a whole new level. Brightly lit, it’s hard to miss this colourful creation on Mt Eden Road, with red and yellow décor shining like a beacon to your next meal. Winner of 2010 Best Café and named best family restaurant three years running, it’s a great place for a casual meet up or a family lunch out on the weekend. There’s nothing quite like it, with quality food, welcoming staff and an extensive menu. Try their Moroccan lamb meatballs or Piri Piri chicken salad for lunch, followed by a nice New Zealand wine.

There are plenty of free events to go around, including live entertainment, themed parties and Sky Sports viewings. CHUGGING ALONG NICELY MICHAEL CHUGG HAS EXPERIENCED ROCK ‘N’ ROLL AT IT ’S LOWEST AND HIGHEST. WE SPOKE TO THE VERY SUCCESSFUL PROMOTER ABOUT HIS CAREER BEFORE HIS SHOWS ROBERT PLANT, PAUL SIMON, SANTANA AND MORE JUMP THE DITCH TO KIWILAND IN THE UPCOMING WEEKS.

Usually, I’m on the end of a microphone, interviewing bands and acts that are touring, releasing new stuff or making some kind of splash. But it’s not often I actually get to talk to the ‘Man’, the guy that makes them, breaks them and puts them on that stage. In town to promote Santana, Steve Miller, Robert Plant, Paul Simon and others, my two-hour phone interview with this particular man was the possibly best business decision I ever made. Agent, manager, concert promoter Michael “Chuggie” Chugg has been promoting bands for nearly fifty years. He has been behind some of the biggest concert tours in Australasia, but he’s also a tireless promoter of Australian music to the rest of the world. Chugg began in Tasmania in the ‘60s, running dances and local bands. The first gig he organised was for his cycling club in Launceston, at the age of 15. “I just started working a furniture shop with the bass player in the top (local) band called The Dominos. I got them and another, The Chevrons, together at the local trades hall, we had a dance and made £80 for the club. I thought, ‘this is pretty good, I might do this a bit more,’ so, I started running dances and managing The Chevrons”. From there he saved his money up to help other locals get into the Melbourne music scene. Eventually he made the permanent move to Melbourne where he met up with future industry lawyer, co-promoter and long time friend, Michael Gudinski and another guy called Michael Browning (who went on to manage AC/DC). They formed an agency called Consolidated Rock. That later led to a move to Aussie’s big player Premiere Artists, working with stalwart Paul Dainty, and finally a split to create an independent agency promoting New Wave acts like Rick Ocasek, Elvis Costello and The Clash. That became the Frontier Touring Company. “And away we went. It’s now the biggest outfit in Australia, and since I’d left to start Chugg Entertainment, is the biggest pain in my ass!” Chugg’s brash audience harangues started out of necessity on stage in Auckland during Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World tour. “Half way through the second song some clown threw a fifty cent piece and hit him right in the middle of his forehead. Neil went berserk, screaming and yelling. ‘I wanna see that guy! Get that guy!” So I walked out on staged and looked out and, believe it or not, I pinged the guy straight away. I said ‘you threw that coin didn’t you?’ Everybody took a pace back, security went in and took him back stage. Neil berated him for twenty minutes and then went back on stage. I can’t believe I went out into the crowd and saw that guy immediately! As if I was being guided. Anyway Neil signed a poster at the end of the tour ‘To the awesome Tasmanian Devil Chuggie!’ Sometimes Chugg was in the right place, at the right time. “Back in the 70’s I was managing a guy who used to be the lead singer of The Easybeats, Stevie when the Opera House had opened in Sydney. And he was huge at the time with a monstrous album called Hard Road. Anyway, this old roady friend said George Young (also from The Easybeats) had a younger brother with a band in the Western Suburbs called AC/DC. So I said let’s put them on together, keep it in the family because George and Harry [Vander] had written and produced Stevie’s record. So AC/

DC opened for Stevie Wright in the Sydney Opera House and that was their first ever concert! And then about four year’s late we took them to England and, let me tell you, it wasn’t cups of tea (in the greenroom) back then!” Alas, promoter Paul Browning scooped up their management, much to Chugg’s chagrin. . I asked Chugg about the excesses of touring, the riders, the drugs, the girls… His reply was interesting. “We used to say that if you made it to 30, you’d had a good life. But the tide was changing, although we and pretty much every promoter in the 70’s made it up as we went, standards were creeping in. The standout was ABBA… when they got off the plane there were masseuses, and trainers and doctors. But they were the odd band out then. Later on in the 80’s, I’ll never forget the first Bon Jovi Tour – mass hysteria outside the hotel rooms, like the Beatles days; craziness, and girls outside their hotel. They flew 12 ladies of the night up from Sydney and there were naked girls on roller blades all around the Mirage Hotel (Port Douglas). Two tours later, it was doctors and masseuses and psychiatrists and herbal teas and soothsayers. Everyone’s behaving like an athlete, even the manager’s in terry towel trackies. [Laughs]!” Finding acts to tour has changed a lot. No need for multi month overseas excursions in search of the tour potential. “Now you can record on your computer and put in on the Internet. We first found Florence + the Machine that way. We have kids who work for us searching out acts, like Of Monsters and Men, from Iceland, who was one of the headliners on our Laneway festival tour. I say to all the new bands that you can start your own trip now, just put it up on the web and someone will discover it. Live touring is where it’s at. It’s in the gigs and the merchandise.” Chugg’s very descriptive about the various ways bands are merging their music and sponsorship deals and very scathing about the poor support of new Aussie music in his own country, despite a 25% quota for radio play. “One of the reasons I left Frontier was because the bean counters were keen on me touring unknown bands. Well, one of those bands we lost $40,000 on was called Radiohead. Who ironically, don’t really get airplay, even now! Another time I’m on a ferry, after the Blur tour and their promoter says he’s got the biggest act of the 21st century. And I say ‘not that fat little guy from Take That?’ Well Robbie Williams didn’t do much chop first time but he was huge on his third tour - a quarter of a million people (in Australasia) saw him. I couldn’t believe what an amazing entertainer he was! Coldplay was the same, a shy little band, not looking at the audience, playing 200 seat venues. Then we just did that amazing tour [Viva la Vida] recently. That’s the game. Some do well and some won’t, and that’ll continue. But I suppose the real talent shines through and, at the end of the day, that’s what keeps you going!” WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR MICHAEL CHUGG SEE TOURS AND EVENTS FOR ALL TOURS DATES

What’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Easygoing, bit funny, not for idiots. Which historical figure had some wicked style? Wicked Style? Well, taking that literally I’ll say Hitler. We can all agree he was the worst, but he knew how to put together iconic looks. Striking colours, sharp uniforms, skull and eagle graphics. What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Tyler, the Creator. Surely that kid’s going to be the biggest star in the Western world soon. Society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Giving a shit what other people think. The most stylish or coolest people to me are the ones who are true to themselves. What’s the must-have look this spring? I’m so the wrong person to ask I still wear a Sea World T-shirt I bought when I was 10, so I clearly don’t worry too much about trends. I don’t think cats printed on stuff is going anywhere soon in street fashion at least. Also Wu-Tang icons are popping up everywhere. Colours/patterns big this season? From what I can tell galaxy print/pattern is hanging on in there. Karen Walker’s graphic take on it is really fantastic.

Sounds In The Sun

Be at the Whangarei Fritter Festival! Enjoy a feast of fabulous wines and gourmet fritters from Whangarei’s finest on Saturday 30 March for the first ever Fritter Festival! Outstanding sounds from

The Black Seeds Sola Rosa Batucada Sound Machine Plus other great local talent

Unitec’s Sounds In The Sun is the largest of the orientation events in all of New Zealand and this year the deluge of acts – including Tahuna Breaks, Nina McSweeney and dDub – are just some of the names joining the line-up. As much a celebration of the rituals that mark the beginning of the university year, Sounds In The Sun is also a celebration of some of New Zealand’s biggest names in music. This years’ event will also see the incorporation of a brand new Kids Day Out Zone, gearing it more toward family orientation. There will also be food stalls, market stalls and festival rides. Katchafire are one of the biggest names in New Zealand reggae. Their craft has been refined for their latest offering. Billed as a testament to organic Aotearoa reggae and charged with sensibility, the new album On The Road Again holds a flame to the fine balance of classic roots reggae completed with a flavour of R’n’B and funk. No strangers to success, their latest offering On The Road Again follows a double platinum debut, a platinum second album and a critically acclaimed 2007 release, Say What You’re Thinking. They are joined by Nina McSweeney. The songstress, known notably for her collaborations with Concord Dawn, has a history of performing as a vocalist and blues harmonica across national and international stages. Her debut album The Bitter Sea was co-produced by McSweeney herself and Brendon Kahi in only four days. The album has developed its own genre dubbed “creep folk” and has a collection of songs and stories that have a cinematic air of intrigue. Pieter T, whose debut album Life, Love and Lessons was voted best album on Flava FM in 2011, and the genre splitting Sola Rosa is also on this years’ bill. Tahuna Breaks and Weird Together round out the event with the former a seven piece energetic and raw live act and the latter the new studio and live project from Dick Johnson and Nick D. God of War, the videogame series (as opposed to the mythological figure), first burst onto the scene in 2005. Burst is a pretty good verb to use here, it turns out, because there was quite a bit of gore exploding out all over the place, a signature that has continued to appear in every God of War ever since.

STRAW DRINKING GLASSES You can wear this around your ears and eyes, and it sits perfectly on your nose. The original draw is clear and flexible to fit around everyone’s head. Start slurping and zipping away and let the colour decorate. RRP $12.99 mightyape.co.nz

Exclusive to PlayStation platforms, God of War is an action series for the masses – a simplistic, button bashing, violence-a-thon. The general gist is that you, as Kratos - Spartan warrior extraordinaire - have been greatly wronged and must set about correcting that situation by laying waste to all manner of mythological creatures, largely by way of a pair of swords that connect to your forearms with long, hefty chains. A practical weapon, they are not, but Kratos is no mere man, and at his command he is able to effectively decimate anything that stands in his way.

Ascension, then, is the next game in the series. The previous PlayStation 3 titles have all been numbered iterations, but for reasons that have not yet been disclosed, Ascension bucks that trend. Despite the name-related shenanigans, God of War: Ascension is largely what you’d expect – more chaos, more gore, more screen-filling monsters, and more angry-man dialogue. I said largely there, however, for a reason; the game also packs a hefty multiplayer mode this time around, and that’s a first for the series. In it, you can go toe-to-toe with your buddies online, duking it out (or working alongside them) to see who’s the baddest of all the asses. A great extension to the core game, it’s fun to play - only time will tell if it manages to build a solid online following, of course, but it’s certainly worthy of attention. The single player game, meanwhile, is definitely more “evolution” than “revolution.” If you like the general gameplay, with all its violence, massive monsters, and boobies, chances are pretty good you’ll be good to go with this version, too. If you were hoping they’d switch it up a bit, however, and perhaps reinvent or at least overhaul the core, this isn’t the iteration for you. Kratos sticks to what he knows best; if you know what to expect before dipping in, you won’t be disappointed. WRITTEN BY ALAN BELL

ENCORE GET READY TO ROCK YOUR WORLD

THE ANNUAL ALL-ROUND, FEEL-GOOD FESTIVAL IS BACK AGAIN AND READY TO INTRODUCE YOU TO NEW EXPERIENCES. Late last year, I was treated to some fantastic Taranaki hospitality when the line-up for Womad 2013 (World of Music and Dance) was announced during a launch at parliament. Every year I’m both intrigued and delighted to learn who’s on the bill. The line-up is always guaranteed to include the known, the unknown and the ready-to-be-discovered. And it’s this last category that always leaves a lasting impression. Arts director Drew James’ mission is always to top the diversity and challenge of the previous year’s programme. A coup d’état is getting hold of three acts from Mali, a country that has actually banned all musical performance because of its social and political influence. Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba specialise in ngoni (an ancient West African lute). There’s desert blues from Vieux Farka Touré (son of Eric Clapton collaborator Ali Farka Touré) and then there’s Salif Keita – “The Golden Voice of Africa” – who returns with his sandpaper-and-honey voice to perform music of high drama and intimate compassion.

Of course, Womad is really more than a music festival – it’s more like a 360 degree feel good, speak good, hear good and even taste good experience. It’s probably one of the few festivals where you’ll intentionally forgo the picnic basket in favour of the amazing line up of ethnic food on offer. There’s even a cooking gig hosted by Jax, from MasterChef New Zealand and featuring performing artists doing their traditional dishes.

In a blast from the past, look out for Reggae man Jimmy Cliff, who will take the impossibly long journey from Jamaica to put on some good time sounds for us. Also in the mix is Cajun revivalist Anne Savoy. On the phone from the deep South, she told me about the US’s deep passion to rediscover it roots and history in the light of recent financial hardships.

After attending a few times, Womad is a permanent fixture on my family’s calendar because this festival is unlike any other. It’s age agnostic. Yyou can bring the kids and the teens and the olds. One aspect I’ve noticed over the years is the understated professionalism of the mostly volunteer crew (about 1000+) who go out of their way to make every experience unique and pleasurable.

“Americans are looking back on times that weren’t necessarily better but they were real. Our music is about having a real good time, but remembering your past, honouring your history.” Folkies Lau (which means fire) from the Orkney Islands in Northern Scotland also want to honour their past. “We play music that suits the beer drinking hours, which up here is after dark. But we’re looking forward to coming to a country with sunshine. We love the festival crowds – it’s where you get your knees up!” Local act Fly My Pretties, led by Barnaby Weir, will recreate their recent magic in a 90-minute show on the opening night; Aaron Tokona’s AHoribuzz will create funky mischief, Mara TK’s Electric Wire Hustle will amp up the stage and David Kilgour and his Heavy Eights, recently back from the USA will gently rock your world. Also worth supporting is Mihirangi, last seen on New Zealand’s Got Talent, killing the audience with her loop show; plus the Yoots are back and Welli Roots band Newtown Rock Steady will be in the house for some retro skank time. Led by the Nudge’s James Coyle, these boys were the highlight of the Newtown Festival this year and are guaranteed to appeal funk up the Womad nation this year.

One of the stars this year has to be South Africa’s Hugh Masekela. His trumpet gave a plaintive voice to black South Africa’s deep troubles during the apartheid years. His signature Afro-jazz sound remains poignant, rousing and inspirational even after more than half a century of performing. He’s galvanised anti-apartheid support, both domestically and on an international level, and playing tunes of defiance and hope, he’s opened the borders of jazz to include anything from kwela, African township jive and Afro-beat. If you’re going to choose only one night, then make it Friday and catch this man in his one and only performance!

grooveguide.co.nz

This is not the place to get blotto either. There’s beer and wine and plenty of good time, but the peaceful atmosphere amongst the bush and in the Bowl, a natural amphitheatre, pretty much dissolves the agro quotient. Last year, I saw one solitary cop and he was dancing! For the young, there’s a specially marked out area in the zoo which is inside the festival venue, the Bowl of Brooklands, designated for play groups, craft making, animal tours organised games, etc. And on Sunday, the kids even get their own parade when everything stops for them! Older and differentlyabled people have special platforms so they don’t get crushed in the mosh pits. There’s even a special service for the deaf. Now I’m sure I’ve missed something. Well, you can check it all at Womad. co.nz. Gotta rush, camping spots in the racetrack adjacent to the festival are filling up and I don’t want to miss out. See ya there!
